We're going to break down Friday's practice in Denver, a Sean Peyton less practice.
As Vance Joseph led Friday's ordeal, as Sean Peyton departed, we'll go through why Red Murdoch and some other younger players.
They stood out during practice, some other news and notes.
And also, rookies on offense getting a chance to shine.
But we're going to break things down and kick things up by the biggest story of Friday's training camp practice.
That is Bo Nix and that first team offense leading an impressive two-minute end-of-game scenario drive against Denver's defense.
Sarah, tell you what, the temperature was turned up a little bit here at
Broncos practice.
I feel like I'm at this point.
I'm in the sun.
I feel like I'm just getting delusional now these days.
I'm starting to see the mirage in the distance.
But you know what?
We power through here, thanks to power aid and water.
But, man, the hot story here for Broncos Camp, Sarah, the final move the ball period of
the day for the Broncos offense and for Boe Nix.
Which is what we've come to kind of expect from Bo Nix, right, is when the pressure
is turned on when the heat is turned up, so to speak,
Bo Nix really becomes the best version of himself.
And what we're trying to figure out is,
how can we get Bo Nix to be this guy,
make him feel like there's two minutes left in the game
right from the first quarter, right?
So that he's playing at that elite level from the word go
because when you're starting from,
I don't know exactly the amount of yards it was away.
Cody, 80 something.
I think it was the, I think it was, they started on their own 35-yard line, right?
And then they had to march down.
down the entire length of the field.
The way it's set up, down 24 to 20, a minute and 20 seconds left,
no timeouts on your own 35-yard line.
And you've got to march all the way down the field because guess what?
There's no field goal.
You can't kick in a field going to do nothing.
You've got to go down and you've got to score a touchdown.
And you've got to find a way to win.
So they did that.
And look, the thing about this too and how you manage these situations,
we've seen Bowdo Nix and the Broncos in them so many times and they don't blink.
Bowling the offense did not blink in this instance here because very first play, you know,
They try to fire a quick pass to Cortland Sutton.
Rodley Moss, who's had a strong training camp so far, came up and knocked the pass away.
Okay, so the clock stops.
You only lose a couple of seconds on that play.
And now it's second and 10.
One, the very next play, Bow Nix throws a pass to Pat Bryan, who's working outside,
and he gets out of bounds against Pat Sertan.
You get about seven or eight yards on that.
So now you got third and three, third and four at this point.
The clock, you know, stopped because Pat Brian got out of bounds.
Bo Nix drops back to pass.
He's got pressure coming from the outside.
outside. He steps up in the pocket and throws and connects to Evan Ingram, who did a great job on
the route because you always say, when you run routes where you're running a comeback or a hitch,
you don't just stop. You got to come back to the ball. Evan ran to the ball. He attacked it,
got the first down six to seven, eight yards. Clock's running. So you know what that means?
All right, hey, we got to have some urgency here. We got to go tempo, which is something that Bo Nix
really, really likes. And then at that point, you saw Bo Nix throw a comeback to Lord Jordan
Humphrey, who was working against Riley Moss on the Yowell.
outside. Riley had tight coverage, but Lorde,
strong body, strong hands made the play.
Clock is still running. So you got to come up, you got to spike the ball.
Now all of a sudden, the Broncos there.
This is the play of the day, I'd say for the offense.
They're at the 35-yard line now, and time is winding down here.
Cortland Sutton came up with a huge play.
Bow Nix from the 35 just ripped a shot into this window where Cortland caught it at the
eight-yard line. Now, here's this window.
Let me diagram it for you.
For those that are listening, you can visualize it.
He threw the ball right over the linebacker.
Pat Sertan is covering Cortland on an in-breaking route, and he's on the backside part of his hip.
And then right in front of the safety, that window there, he fitted in perfectly where Cortland, the big body, he goes up and he gets it.
And then it's the urgency from that, hey, we made this play.
No one's celebrating, right?
They're running up.
They're spiking the ball to stop the clock.
And on the very next play, money.
Touchdown to Evan Ingram from the back corner of the end zone from Bow Nix with 16 seconds left.
you couldn't have executed a two-minute drill better than Bo Nix and Company did today.
And I don't know that anybody in the NFL is better at doing that, Cody.
I mean, I know we talked about as 10 regular.
Maybe, yeah, maybe.
But, I mean, 10 regular season game-winning drives from Bo Nix last year and 11th during the playoffs.
And certainly plenty of more first half endings and two-minute drills at the end of the first half, right,
where he's put a lot of points on the board as well.
So he's just elite when it comes to the two-minute drive and playing, like you said, with tempo going hurry up.
I like that there's a mixture of players getting involved.
I like that he's looking downfield as well, right?
Because a lot of times what happens in these sort of situations, you dump the ball off to a back,
which is not a problem if it works in a game, but you dump the ball off to a back and you're kind of trying to pick up one chunk play after another.
I like that bow is kind of testing himself a little bit here and pushing the ball down field and trying to
trying to fit it into a tight window, especially against PS2, who we talk about like
quarterbacks throwing interceptions during practice, like we keep track of those.
I've been keeping track.
I don't think Pat Sartan has allowed a catch that I've heard of.
So this might be the first one that I can remember.
And so kudos to Cortland Sutton for making the play and Bo for making the throw.
But I think what you're hearing and what you're seeing in that sort of a situation right
there is exactly where the Broncos know, hey, we can be.
better than anybody else.
And if we can keep games tight,
we know what we can do late in games.
We know that we can come through.
The question is,
can you start with a lead,
preserve it,
or build upon that?
Those are the situations
that this team hasn't found itself in as much.
Well,
I'm glad that Evan Ingram was featured
a lot more today, right?
Because there was a stretch
of the first handful of padded practices
where we're all sitting there
and we're taking notes like,
okay, Evan was featured early without the pads,
but now he's not really getting a lot of targets
within the office. And of course, he's rotating in quite a bit. He's playing with the first and second
team offensive units, but we haven't seen that volume of him actually getting the targets.
But then for him to come up, and I feel like yesterday's practice, and I feel like today's
practice, he did a great job of stepping up and making plays when the Broncos needed him to in terms
of comeback routes. And I would even say the touchdown right there. Like for me, I looked at it for
Evan, and I thought to myself, man, that's what you want to see from a player. That's a confidence
booster for a guy like Evan Ingram.
It really is. And he needs that, right?
A lot of times, you know, you could fall off the map a little bit when it comes to training
camp. You can start maybe stacking together some days and start building some hype.
But then what did we say? We talked about, oh, well, then the pads come on. And all of a sudden,
you know, he's not getting featured as much. That was a bit of a, you know, somewhat of a red flag.
You know, not towards Evan necessarily, but towards the whole situation that we're hoping for,
which is that he becomes a focal point of this offense.
And we want to see that.
We need to see that.
The Broncos need somebody at tight end to be able to step up to create opportunities for everybody else.
It opens up so much more for the offense when you have a tight end that defenses have to account for every single play.
It can help your running game.
It can help your receivers not get double team on the outside.
So if Evan is able to continue to build upon that and stack more days now, build his confidence
up, get the Broncos to involve him more in the game plan.
That would excite me a lot.
So I love hearing that little Jordan is still making plays.
We know that the Broncos have injuries at the receiver position.
I know we'll talk about that at some point.
Jalen Waddle still out there on the practice field but not practicing.
He's walking around with his jersey on, right?
So it's one of those times where young players have a chance to step up and make
themselves non-negotiable when the season begins.
Oh, and that's the thing, too, with the young.
offense because I want to pinpoint it and people are asking me questions, you know, hey, like,
how has Bo been in this camp? And I think Bo's been fine. I feel like this one of Bo's better
camps that he's had. You can tell he looks more comfortable. The problem that the Broncos
offense and Boe in particular have run into is the fact that, well, now, you know, you haven't
had Luke Wattenberg in any of the physical padded practices. Today was a day where Garrett Bowles
was not out there because he had a veteran day. So Frank Crum got a lot of run at left tackle.
And then you factor in, you know, a couple days, you had pads. He had no Cortland
Sutton or Jalen Waddle. And then in this kind of practice here, you don't have Jalen Waddle,
you don't have Marvin Mims. And so Boe was working with so many different guys, so many different
influencing pieces that could impact his nature on his drop back, right? If it's a five-step
drop, a five-step pitch, or you're trying to set up something longer. Like you have to marry
your footwork with your dropback, but also the timing of the routes. And that gets impact by
pressure from the outside, pressure from the inside. And that happens when you've got guys that are
coming in and out because of injuries right now.
But this is what's going to make the Broncos better because these guys that might have to
step up if there are injuries that linger or if guys get hurt, these other guys are getting
valuable reps that will certainly help the Broncos in the instance that does take place.
Knock on what, let's pray and hope that it doesn't happen here.
But we will talk about some of the injuries impacting the Broncos, three players left with an
injury.
We got an update on Matt Henningson.
But also, it was a day where Broncos' offensive rookies stood out quite a bit.
We'll talk about Jonah Coleman, Justin Julian.
We'll talk about defensive rookie.
Red Murdoch as well.

Broncos. We heard good positive updates from Jonah Coleman, Justin Jolie, and even on the other side
of the ball, Red Murdoch doing a little bit of what he did best at Buffalo as well, bringing that to
the Denver Broncos. Broncos country, we're going to talk about that. The exciting rookies for this
class and some of the plays as I got to watch a little live update of Cody's notes going as
practice was going very interesting stuff, very fun stuff. I felt like I was there a little bit and
we're going to try to help you make you feel like you were there as well breaking it down on
today's episode of the show. I want to quickly say thank you to every single one of you that makes
Lockdown Broncos your first listen of the day. Every single day. Shout out to all the everydayers.
Cody, let's try to make the fans once again. I felt like listening to you break down that
game winning drive for the Broncos. I felt like I was there.
there at practice. I'm like, man, just soaking it in right here. Let's talk about the rookies.
Let's start with Jonah Colden, who Sean Peyton said was kind of his pleasant surprise.
And then he mentioned the linebackers as well. We'll get to Red Murdoch. But he said that
Jonah was his pleasant surprise so far of camp. He's, that sounds like he turned it up at that Friday's
practice. I mean, might have had one of the best runs of the day. What can you tell us about what
you saw from the rookie out of Washington? Yeah, I would say he's probably out of all the running backs
in pads. He has had the best run so far of camp. This is about maybe a 15 to 17 yard run here.
And the thing I like about Jonah as of late, we're starting to see him get more opportunities with Bo Nix and those guys on that first team offense.
Not to say that, oh, he's running back one, but no, the Broncos want to get him more reps with that offensive line unit.
And Sean Payton made that kind of illusion the other day when talking about in fairness to the blockers, you know, that he's kind of behind right now because they're just still getting used to the pads.
He said Jonah's been a surprise.
And so Jonah had a couple of big burstful runs here in today's practice.
I like him.
He also got popped pretty hard on one play by undrafted linebacker,
Tori in York and Drew Sanders.
He was running.
He almost got that second level.
And then there's York and there's Drew Sanders.
Those guys made a terrific play there.
But I like what I've seen from him.
I felt like in the run game, I felt like it was him.
RJ Harvey Harvey had a couple of nice runs in this period throughout the day,
a couple of team periods.
And then Jalil McLaughlin in the run game,
also stood out as well.
So you like to see the run game get going.
And there maybe are some contextual things that we have to take a look at here in terms of,
okay, what happened?
Like we were all joking around at practice.
Like, oh, Sean Payton, you know, the day that Sean Payton's not at practice,
the Broncos seemingly can run the ball better.
That was kind of the running joke here during today's practice.
But it also does help and not to minimize it.
I don't want to do that in any way, shape, or form.
I'm saying, but the Broncos, they didn't have to face off against DJ Jones or Malcolm
Roach who had veteran days off today in Yomo Uwazerica,
continue to make impressive play after impressive play.
I mean, it's been so incredible to see where he's at.
But Jonah made the most of his opportunities.
And rookie tight-in, Justin Jolie.
Sarah, we've seen a little bit more of him on a day-to-day basis over the last
handful of practices.
And he had a handful of catches during the team period.
He did have one mistake, though, and that came in seven on seven.
He caught a nice pass.
He went to go turn up field.
And guess what?
Red Murdoch came in and punched the football out after he took about two or three
steps, fumble on the ground, the defense recovers it.
Red Murdoch doing exactly what he did at Buffalo.
Now you're saying it kind of translate a little bit in practice, which is nice to see.
It was a good day for the rookies.
Let me tell you something, Jolie.
You think you can catch a ball against me.
Hey, Red.
Get up feeling.
Hey, Red.
Yeah.
I think that nickname the Daredevil is going to stick for Red Murdoch, for me at least.
I love it.
But no, I love hearing all these things.
I know you actually had a note as well about Jolie springing a play with a block
that he had as well.
Yeah.
Tell us about that before I kind of vamp on what you had to say there.
Yeah.
I mean, once again, you know how the Broncos offense uses their tight ends in the blocking
game.
There was one play.
And I can't really give you the specific of it, but just know that involved Marvin
Mims having his hand on the ball.
And then Justin Jolie out on the perimeter blocking and bringing him up the sideline,
which was a nice play to see.
So once again, like the rookies getting, getting his hands dirty.
Like he's not a finished product by any means.
But like with Jolie, you're seeing the willingness to block your
seeing the effort, like you're seeing the 110% commitment to it.
And you're also seeing him involved in the past catching game.
I'm liking what I'm seeing from Jolie so far.
Really good stuff.
I mean, that's exactly how he's going to continue to get involved, right?
If you block, you get the rock.
And if you start getting the rock, well, you can't fumble the ball, obviously.
So a little bit of a mixed bag there.
But I like what I'm hearing about, certainly Coleman and Jolie.
But now we get to Red Murdoch as well, Cody, who this is what he did at Buffalo, right?
I mean, 17 career force fumbles at the college level,
broke Khalil, Max record of 16.
Same school, crazy.
And same first name.
I think that's actually Red Murdoch's real first name is Khalil,
if I,
if I,
if I gave me correctly.
So very, very odd coincidence.
KM, same initials.
Yeah, KM,
KM and then KK,
they're ending their last name.
I've thought about this way too much.
But,
but yeah,
I love it.
And I think that we need him to continue developing
as that number three linebacker now.
that's not literally the case at this point.
It's still sounds like Lavelle Bailey,
Karen A. Reed,
getting the second reps behind Singleton and York.
But is there an update on that as well?
Yeah, I would say also a veteran day off for Alex Singleton.
So it was Lavel Bailey getting the reps next to Justin Sternad.
And so it was nice to see your Lavel step up.
He had a couple of nice sticks.
We got to talk about, well, okay,
I'll mention one play that stood out from Injoma,
Orozareke, was in the run period.
He did this move and he's working.
Like Alex Forsyth has his hands full against him.
Like no one can block.
Not even the guards are cleanly blocking in Yoma Owasarike.
In Yoma O'Azareke shoots off the line of scrimmage.
Alex Forsyth is doing a great job blocking him.
He makes one move where he gets underneath Forsyth, like in between, like his chest and frame.
His arms go behind Forsyth, grab onto J.K.
And he almost kind of pulls J.K. into Forsyth.
And he's holding on to him.
Like, okay.
Unbelievable.
In Yoma is the, like we talked about, you know, Pat Bryant being the office.
offensive star of camp so far.
In Yoma has been probably the defensive star here.
But we got to talk about second year pass rush or outside linebacker,
Johnny Walker, Jr.
He has constantly flashed pressures left and right throughout practice.
Even going back to OTAs, a mini camp, we're always keeping an eye on number 59.
He shot inside on this one move where he was clearly being held.
I mean, it was almost the most blatant thing, even some offensive players or even doing
the flag symbol, which was very interesting.
I was kind of caught off guard by that.
But then he had one player where he came off the edge
and he would have had a clean strip sack of Jared Sted him.
I like him.
He's going to be our guy to watch, I think next week in the preseason
in terms of other standouts as I'm going through my news and notes here.
I mentioned Drew Sanders earlier.
Drew has had some really good days here since coming back from whatever,
you know, knocked him out of action for a couple of practices.
But, I mean, Sarah, you're seeing it right now with this team.
The depth is in such a good spot right now, which you need it because injuries
piling up. Yeah, injuries are piling up. Marvin Mims left practice. Nate Adkins left practice.
Obviously, Luke Wattenberg still not practicing positive updates on Cortland Sutton, obviously,
who practiced in full, right? So that was great to see after I thought, Cody, some kind of strange
comments at the podium, especially after listening to it back and reading it back. I was,
I was like not making much of it in the moment while watching it live. And then I listened back to it.
And I was like, hmm, this is interesting stuff that he's talked about being a good soldier.
and he's talking about when they let me.
And I mean, it's just, it was weird.
So, I mean, everybody else can go back and listen to that themselves.
But what other injury updates are there?
Because we don't know anything regarding Marvin Mims.
Obviously, he was ticked off, it sounds like.
He was ticked off about it, didn't like it,
headed into the training room with Lute, not related,
not the same player or anything,
but Nate Adkins as well going in at the same time.
Yeah.
And so looking on that, like Marvin Mims was running vertically downfield
and Talo, Hufango's in coverage.
And as Marvin was just running,
he just pulled up like something something happened right and once again like I had my handy dandy
binoculars I'm sitting up there I probably had the best view in the house because I'm up on the
pillar I got like the whole all 22 sky view of practice and I'm sitting here I'm just like looking
and I'm looking at Marvin and he was frustrated but it looked like he was kind of pushing down on his
groin area and I think if we all remember like Marvin over the course of his careers had a couple
of groin things pop up but he didn't look like he was in pain he wasn't walking off with a limp
Neither was Nate Adkins.
We don't know what happened with Nate Adkins.
So hopefully get some clarity on that.
I wonder if Vance Joseph will answer any injury-related questions during Saturday's press conference.
That we go to them now that Sean Payton's in Canton, Ohio.
We'll see about that.
We'll see who tries to pull a funny one on VJ.
But and then Matt Henningson, unfortunately, went down during individual drills.
And he was working against the bag and just went down, just simple password stuff.
And now that we have found out, he has officially torn his Achilles.
And here's the crazy thing.
And I just feel so gutted for Matt because Matt's been having a terrific under the radar,
just stout training camp.
And the work he put in behind the scenes, I got to see it firsthand.
You know, at times we're out there and it's the cold of November and December.
He's running sprints on the side field.
He's working agility drills, right?
Like this is a guy who's put in a lot of work to come back.
The crazy thing about it, today's August 7th.
Last year on August 7th, he tore his Achilles against the 49ers and a joint practice.
So same exact injury.
same exact a year from when it initially happened.
I'm just gutted for him.
Players are gutted for him.
That's a genuinely good dude in that locker room that probably, you know,
the team wants to keep around as long as they can.
So unfortunately for him, he's going to have to have another surgery.
So there's that.
And then maybe if we want to get to some good news here,
Nick Benito was back out there in full pass, which was nice to see.
Yeah, very good news there on that front.
Certainly you want to believe Sean Payton when he says guys are going to be fine,
But at the same time, that's a vague enough comment to wonder, well, how long until he's going to be fine, right?
Because you tend to worry about injuries.
You don't like to see stuff like that during camp.
So it is good to see Nick Benito back out there as well, Cody.
And we certainly hope that his four to five day timetable for Jalen Waddle proves to be accurate as well.
I saw a lot of like fantasy football people on my Twitter feed were reposting his, you know, the walk with the limp that he had.
And they were saying, they were saying like, oh, man, this is this is bad.
This looks really bad, you know, so, but obviously if it's four to five days, you know, get it taken care of, get back out there and maybe manage him a little bit.
We'll see what that looks like when he does practice field.
I will say I saw Jalen Waddle today didn't walk with as noticeable of a limp as he did the other day, which was crazy because yesterday when he was walking,
there were times he was walking normal and then there were times he was walking with a limp.
And then he went to the side field yesterday.
He went and did some impressive work on the side field today.
So even though he's dealing with a strain, I don't know if it's as bad as a lot of people are assuming it is, right?
Like Sean Payton said, it's a strain.
We'll see him back out here probably four or five days.
All right, we're going to hold Sean Payton to us for on that one.
But Jalen, like I said, he's in great spirits.
He's joking.
He's laughing.
Well, guys, I'm not worried one bit about Jalen Waddle.
And it's crazy.
Like, I even put out a tweet about Jonah Coleman's run.
Like, it was the best run so far that we've seen of any Broncos running back in pads.
And there were already fantasy football accounts making articles.
I'm getting like notifications.
about my name.
I'm like, what the heck is going on here?
And so I was like, man, these fantasy people, they're just on it.
Like, you wouldn't believe, like, they take anything, a little breadcrumb and all of a sudden
now you have a whole loaf of bread over there in the fantasy community.
But no, and knock on, well, like tomorrow's practice here, and Sarah Bedinger and I,
we're going to have a bonus episode for all of you on a Saturday.
Like, come on, folks.
We're excited about this.
But there will be a simulated scrimmage type environment, apparently.
That's the rumor for Saturday's practice.
You know, Sean Payton is not going to be there.
Benz Joseph is running the show.
That is what we're expecting.
