Starting point is 00:00:00 As day two of Denver Broncos training camp approaches us, all eyes are on Pat Bryant, Bo Nix, and the Broncos offense to see if they can keep up with the hot start. Welcome into another episode, Locked on Broncos. Cody Rourke here as we break down day two of Broncos camp,

Starting point is 00:00:31 giving me a preview of everything you need to know from players to watch, including Pat Bryant, who got off to a hot start during the first day of practice on yesterday, to the point of how the Broncos offense might look entirely different going into 2026 and the margins they must clean up on if they're going to avoid falling back into the statistical regression to the mean of one score games. We're going to kick things off by going through a little bit of a brief recap of some of the key storylines in day one, key standouts and what the Broncos can build on here coming into today's practice.

Starting point is 00:01:02 Broncos country so excited to be here once again as we go through training camp. So in order to kind of project what we think we might see here in day two of Broncos camp, let's go back to day one here for Denver. Now obviously first day of the acclamation period. There are two acclimation practices before Friday's practice, which is the first practice that is open to the fans. So it's a ramp up period here yesterday, a ramp up period here today, which means more than likely a shorter practice today compared to what we normally see in training camp.

Starting point is 00:01:32 be very similar to what we saw yesterday. But day one, what we saw is the Broncos offense. They shined in the red zone period. Now for the Broncos, they were working in tight red zone seven on seven, tight red zone team periods, just two periods overall for both units offensively, defensively, yesterday. And it was a sharp day for the Broncos offense. If you don't believe me, Broncos country, I've got my handy dandy notebook that I always keep

Starting point is 00:01:55 all my notes on here. And if you see a star next to any of the notes that I put down, that means it was a big play or a scoring play. And as you can see, if you're watching us on YouTube, there are a ton of stars. So let's start off with seven on seven. We saw Bo Nix get the first reps there. Once again, no limitations for Bo. So for anyone that's just now tuning in to this and you missed yesterday's practice recap, Bo's good. Bo's ready to rock and roll here. He threw a touchdown pass yesterday to Jay Lynn Waddle. He also threw one to Lil Jordan Humphrey in seven on seven. And he would go on to throw a touchdown pass to Pat Bryant in Denver's team period there from the

Starting point is 00:02:32 The first team offense led by Bo Nix. That was the only touchdown that was scored in that period. They mixed in a couple of runs. But you saw Bo find Pat Bryant in that specific drill in the 11 on 11, which is something you like to see. And there's a lot of hype and a lot of fun buzz surrounding Pat right now. But the other quarterbacks getting involved as well, Sam Ellinger throwing two touchdown passes to Pat Bryant, getting those final reps at the quarterback position. And then Jared Stitton, finding Michael Bandy for a touchdown and other guys getting involved in the mix as well. And I believe the second one was to Jonah Coleman, who was working against Jonathan Cooper, who was in coverage against him.

Starting point is 00:03:08 Stidham found Coleman who rose up and made a fantastic grab. So once again, seeing that underrated pass catching ability from Jonah here early on. But, you know, we take all these things right now with a little bit of a grain of salt because the pads aren't on yet. But for an offense that is desperately needed to get off to a faster starts in comparison to a defense that's really returning everybody. Denver's offense is really returning everybody that's the same with the shiny new edition of Jalen Waddle. It's nice to see Denver's offense just get off to a little bit of a hot start here early on on day one of practice. But obviously today will be the final acclamation day as fans will attend tomorrow's practice. So a lot to look forward to when fans are out there for the first time.

Starting point is 00:03:48 And if you are going out there, the one thing I will say, there will be various periods. And if you went to practice last year, you'll understand this as well. But fans aren't just going to be able to sit in stands and shoot on their cell phones. It's like there's going to be periods where they're allowed to shoot some stuff, kind of the same with us in the media. But after that, security is going to be on y'all from doing it because the Broncos don't want anyone capturing formations and stuff that other teams can pick up on, which I understand.

Starting point is 00:04:12 So prepare yourself for that, sunscreen, water. Come prepared. It's going to be hot in Dev Valley, but excited to have fans out there because they bring a lot of energy to some of the practices, obviously that Denver puts on here. But I think that's going to transition now to one of our everydayer club members who sent in a text message, Yesterday. We'll go through this in terms of the offensive side of the ball a little bit later on, but players who had the most buzz. And the first thing I'm going to say, our buzz watch, it was Pat Brian. We highlighted it a little bit earlier, had three touchdown catches from quarterbacks. Obviously, in yesterday's periods combined between the one red zone seven on seven and the one red zone team period. Two touchdown catches, obviously from Sam Ellinger throwing him the football and then one from Bo Nix. I think so much of the conversation to coming into camp, it was the wider.

Starting point is 00:04:59 room here for Denver. And I have to pinpoint to Broncos country here. It's really hard to follow because, yes, Cortland and Jalen are going to be the top two guys, but Denver rotates all of these guys, all these wide receivers, even the undrafted guys in with Bow, with Jarrett, and with Sam. So I think for Pat, as we go into today's practice, continuing to watch, does he carry that momentum forward? And one thing that stood out to me when I'm watching Pat make these catches, good focus, strong hands. Like there were a couple of times there were, you know, there was a player, Jayquan McNullen on one of them, what had tightly contested coverage against Pat, but Pat had the stronger hands and was able to finish on one particular play in which he scored.

Starting point is 00:05:40 So I'm excited to see these battles too because I think Pat with his size, his route running ability, I think it'll complement this offense really well, opposite of what Cortland and Jalen do. I think those guys are going to be the game changers here inside of this offense. But because of the attention that those guys are going to see, Pat is in a position to thrive. And maybe on day one of Broncos camp yesterday, maybe that was the approach because you had PS2 lining up on Cortland. You had Riley Moss lining up against Jalen Waddle and then J. Kwan was lining up against guys like Pat, Troy, Marvin, and the different guys in the rotation there. But Denver, it seemed like they wanted to take advantage of different matchups, right? When you're in the tight red zone,

Starting point is 00:06:19 it was an area of Broncos, they kind of struggled with a little bit last year. I think, and we'll get to this coming up in segment two here later on. I think you're going to see some. changes offensively with how they scheme certain matchups up, right? There are certain things are being created to get guys open, which I'm super excited about here. But obviously for our buzz, Pat Bryant's one of those guys as he continues to work in with not only just Bo, but with Jared and with Sam. And I think the fact that he's been able to produce with all three of those quarterbacks, that is a good sign that I think the Broncos are going to rely heavily on him this upcoming season, though I do know that there are a lot of questions about that. So I think as

Starting point is 00:06:57 we go into today's practice, will we see a little bit more of an emphasis on maybe Troy Franklin getting some targets? Cortland got targeted twice during the seven-on-seven period. Jalen Waddle had a target, obviously from Bowie, where he did catch a touchdown. And even RJ Harvey yesterday was getting in the mix of this Broncos team in the passing department. I believe it was in the team period. Sam Ellinger threw a touchdown pass to RJ in coverage. And RJ, I mean, he looks, he looks faster. And once again, no pads are on. When you throw on those shoulders, pads, it's going to maybe reduce something a little bit. Every player is wearing the guardian cap helmets.

Starting point is 00:07:32 So players will even tell you that kind of feels like it slows them down a little bit. But, man, RJ, RJ looked good in the first action that we saw. And the way we can evaluate the running backs right now is pass catching. It's hard to evaluate the run game because the offensive line is not able to pull and hit guys and the defensive lines, not allowed to strike and engage either. So it makes the run game aspect a little more challenging. But from the passing offense standpoint, that was a great sight to see here from Bow Nix and the Broncos offense in yesterday's practice.

Starting point is 00:08:01 And look, there are a lot of questions about what the dynamic with Davis Webb is going to look like here. But also, there are a lot of questions as to what the offense itself will look like. Players have alluded to it, you know, it's a lot of the same stuff we've run before, but we've added some new wrinkles into the mix. Jim in our everydayer club says, what about the offense stood out the most to you from day one?

Starting point is 00:10:40 Anything noticeably different with it? I think that's a great question here, Jim, because what I have seen so far, and this dates back to OTAs and even a little bit in rookie minicamp, just trying to piece together, what are the base foundations of this Broncos offense? Not much has changed from the look of it in terms of how Sean Payton had guys lining up formations. I think you're going to see a balance between shotgun and under center plays this year, which look, I think being under center for bowl, that's going to be great because if you could be under center and you can get the run game going, you know what that sets up? It sets up the play action pass.

Starting point is 00:11:13 But the Broncos, one thing that they didn't do a lot of last season, especially when they played a lot out of shotgun, they didn't motion a lot. A lot of it was just, hey, we're lining up and we're calling the play and we're going. We're going to run it out of shotgun. We're just going to drop back. Well, now I think we are going to see a lot more motion inside of this offense from Davis Webb, which I think adding that sprinkle, he played quarterback. And look, I think in today's game, a lot of the teams that you see that have high-powered offenses,

Starting point is 00:11:38 they use motion. But the reason their offenses are explosive isn't because they use motion. It's because it allows them to see things on the fly, to see adjustments. And if you have the right personnel groupings, right, and you have the perfect utopart. Some offenses have had it. Denver has not had it, though. And that's a good run game. If the Broncos can get the run game going and now you can incorporate this motion with Jalen Waddle, Troy Franklin, Pat Bryant, Marvin Mims, heck even Cortland Sutton getting involved or even motioning your tight ends, right?

Starting point is 00:12:06 Because you may like a protection initially, but then the defense may shift. Well, guess what? Now you can move your tight end. You can move your other guys into place to where your protection can uphold. But the motion is going to allow you to maybe dictate certain matchups, especially if you get man coverage. Cover one, which means that you have a single high safety playing the middle of the field. Cover zero means that you have nobody playing deep in the middle of field. Everybody is matched up.

Starting point is 00:12:29 It is a zero concept, which usually involves five or six guys blitzing and trying to get after the quarterback. So you know you're getting that man-to-man coverage across the board. It's identifying the best matchup. But let's keep in mind here on one of the plays where we saw Jalen Wattle score during yesterday's practice during the seven-on-seven, the Broncos, they use motion. And the thing is, you can either use a full motion where you go across the formation. you can use a motion where it's kind of a half motion. And then once the ball is snapped, then you can go back the other way, right?

Starting point is 00:12:57 And if you're in man coverage and you catch it in man coverage of defense, well, now all of a sudden, the guy who's got to cover that guy in motion might have to track through a lot of traffic to be able to get him, right? So I think that's where you are going to see some things getting schemed up. And I think if the defense shifts their attention to bracketing, right, if you get that motion and you get man and you say, hey, you know what?

Starting point is 00:13:17 Like, there's a lot of traffic to go through. Okay, usually you have a combo call. Someone will take anything goes outside. Someone will take anything that comes inside. But sometimes your other routes can make it to where the defense collapses down. And then one guy is left wide open. And that's what we saw when little Jordan Humphrey scored his touchdown against J. Kwan McNullen.

Starting point is 00:13:35 And I thought Jayquan did a really good job of trying to get in position. But the Broncos, because in the tight red zone, they're incorporating motion. And there's guys and there's a lot of traffic in one specific area. Well, now you've got guys that are extending upfield vertically coming outside underneath. So you have some crossing patterns there that make. it difficult for defenders. And if you can scheme someone open perfectly because of that, well, there you go. Touchdown opportunity. And that's something I think we are going to see a lot of here this upcoming season. So I think that's a great text message sent in, obviously from our

Starting point is 00:14:04 everyday club from Jim. And then I also think you've got to go back to some other things here as well. When we talk about the Broncos margins, what they need to fix here going into 2026. I think one of those things is reducing the three and out rate. Last year, the Broncos, they had the fourth highest rate in 2025 have a three and outs at 25%. And obviously, when you have a quarterback who leads the league in passing attempts, you don't have a run game. You know, your idea, like the defense, the way they played Denver last year was almost saying, hey, we know you can't run the ball.

Starting point is 00:14:34 We know that Bowenicks are good quarterback. We're still going to dare you to throw. Like, we're going to take away Cortland. Go ahead and throw it to Troy Franklin. Go ahead and throw it to these other guys. We're going to live with those guys beating us, but we're not going to live with Cortland beating us. And so for the Broncos' offense to be as good as they were last year,

Starting point is 00:14:49 even though that we had similar conversations of frustration, almost every other show after every game saying like, man, you know, the Broncos offense did good here. But if they could just get this down pat, things would be nice. The three and out rate has to be much better here. And this is something of Sean Payton also talked about yesterday, you know, in terms of what you need to do to avoid those, you know, one score games. Reverting back to the, I'd say the statistical regression to the mean there of one score games where Denver, they took advantage. They won a lot of those one score games the year prior to that. I think there were one and seven in those one score games. We saw Kansas City take a step back after being a team that was winning all those one score games just two years ago.

Starting point is 00:15:25 So how does Denver avoid that? Well, reducing your three and out rate is going to be one of them. Generating more takeaways on the defensive side of the ball, that's going to be another one. Denver did not do that enough last season. Even though they led the NFL in Sacks, they did not generate enough takeaways. And they did not give the Broncos offense those extra opportunities that they needed to capitalize. Right. And at times we say the Broncos defense, they came up clutching a lot of big.

Starting point is 00:15:47 areas. But could you imagine if the Broncos at times were able to generate takeaways. Like there were there were moments I go back and I'm watching a talanol who fun drop on film. And I'm saying to myself, man, if Hufanga gets that, especially in a FC championship game, man, that might be the difference maker. The Broncos winning and losing that game. We know everything that transpired with and going for it on fourth down, not getting it. But getting the ball, that specific situation there where Hufanga had it. Oh, that would have maybe changed the outcome. Denver might have been in the Super Bowl last year. But, you know, he can go back and go, woulda could have.

Starting point is 00:16:17 or shoulda. Somebody once told me it's not good to should all over yourself. So we're not going to do that here on today's episode of show. The third thing is run the ball more effectively. As cliche as it is, that was one of those things that even Sean Peyton firmly believes the Broncos have to do a better job of. And he's made mention of it countless times this offseason and the scrums that we've had, including yesterday when we talked to him and he talked about Bo Nicks and how excited he is to just see the progress that he has made, but so we can do a better job of helping him out by running the football a lot more effectively. And so I'm curious to see with these new wrinkles inside of the offense that we were answering when Jim sent in his text

Starting point is 00:16:50 message. You know, I think so much of it too for Davis Webb is how can this, how can the motion department, how can maybe being quicker with our tempo? How can that help the run game get going, right? I think overall, if you're lining up and you're getting the ball snapped with three seconds, two seconds, one second left on the play clock, it's a lot easier for the defense to time that snap, to pick up on that, to react quickly. Because when they're down on a three point stance or you have a standup, bowside linebacker. You know, he's looking at the ball, but he's also peaking up because you can see the play clock in the distance. Oh, it's at one. At one, I'm timing the snap. If they don't have a snap, I'm going. And we're going to get, you know, the edge there against an offensive tackle.

Starting point is 00:17:29 The Broncos found themselves in that situation far too much. So I think the tempo, I think to change of personnel in the motion, I think these are going to be new wrinkles we are going to see inside of the Broncos offense. And I just think once again, being better in the red zone. Last year, they had a red zone touchdown rate of 57.9%. Not terrible, but it's third. It's third. in the NFL. And there are some opportunities that Denver missed out on last season. I think when you go back and watch certain games, we're in the red zone.

Starting point is 00:17:53 Gosh, I even think two, that Thursday night game against the Raiders, the Broncos, I believe they blocked a punt or a field goal. And they even generate a couple of stops on fourth down. And the offense could not move the ball to set things up. Will Lutz,

Starting point is 00:18:06 you know, wasn't in a position to hit a field goal there. So Denver's got to get those opportunities to where you're in the red zone, you got to get six. That's got to be the emphasis because the pressure to improve, like the offense can't be where they were at last year. Even though they were better than anything we've seen, they can't be last year's unit.

Starting point is 00:18:22 They have to take that step forward. And these are the things that they have to do in order to do just that. So I think that is something that we're going to keep an eye on here as training camp goes about. And I think the one dilemma you always run into here in coverage of training camp is, all right, well, the offense, they apparently won day one. Well, what if the offense Wednesday, too? Does that mean that the defense is struggling? No, I don't think that's the case.

Starting point is 00:18:41 And when the pads come on, that's where the evaluation truly does matter. But right now is can the offense? Offense operate these new things, these little wrinkles and nuances that Quinn Miners made mention about just a couple of days ago. Can they understand all of that? I think one thing that we do know, I think the terminology is going to be a lot shorter because Davis wants to go tempo at times. He wants to be able to pull it out.

Starting point is 00:19:01 That's something that Bo Nix himself wants is the ability to go up tempo. We saw his numbers for some of the best in the NFL last season when going up tempo. And then all of a sudden, you know, the Broncos will go away from him. And Bo's like, hey, let's go tempo. We got these guys. and then you hit the pause button, you call time out, and it just kills the momentum.

Starting point is 00:19:18 I don't think that's going to be the case here with Davis Webb here. But Broncos Country, Broncos Day 2 of Training Camp is coming up here in just a few hours. I'll be there and we'll have complete coverage and recap of what happens today a little bit later on here on lockdown Broncos.

Starting point is 00:19:31 But we're going to get to more of your everyday air club questions and we're going to keep an eye on some players to watch coming into day two. Pat Bryant obviously under the microscope after a big day one. But what about his counterparts, Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims, and other guys on the offensive side of the ball. We'll look at that more here on today's episode of the show.

So let's go to our Everydayer Club hotline here. We got a text message from Jeff. And Jeff asked the question, which players do you have your eyes on going into day two? I think so much of it is, okay, we're going to build off of the Pat Bryan scenario, right?

Starting point is 00:21:55 You want to continue to see Bow Nicks look comfortable. The challenge about these acclimation practices is because you only get two periods, really, with the offense and the defense. You get a seven-on-seven or group work emphasis, and then you get one team period, special teams period, and then practice is over, that'll more than likely change on Friday because you're ramping up, you're building up acclamation to what's going to be longer practices under the CBA. You're only allotted a certain amount of time. I believe it's two hours per practice. What we had initially was just about an hour and 10 minutes this past day.

Starting point is 00:22:28 And I imagine probably an hour 10, maybe an hour and a half coming into today's practice. We'll see. But while I'm going to keep my eye on Pat Bryant, I also want to see his counterparts too. I want to see Marvin Mims a little bit more. I want to see Troy Franklin. And look, when Pat's catching three touchdowns in a practice, he's going to get the focus. And sometimes you can lose sight because there are times where maybe Marvin was on the

Starting point is 00:22:49 field with Pat during that time or Troy was on the field with Cortland and Jalen on another play in another series. And so a lot of people I think they hear Pat Bryant three touchdowns, okay, Pat's wide receiver three. I think he can be 100%. I think he can be that next main option up behind Cortland and Jalen. But I don't think that is a means to write off Marvin or Troy. And I even mentioned it too.

Starting point is 00:23:08 Little Jordan Humphrey caught a touchdown pass from Bow Nix during yesterday's practice. So little Jordan's getting involved in the mix as well. Really hard day, I think as well, if you're an undrafted rookie receiver or you're Hakeem Butler, not much of a usage, right? There were snaps that those guys had, but no targets necessarily for them. I think the only other undrafted receiver that I saw that got a target was Joseph Manjack and Jaden Robinson punched the football out and as a fumble. He recovered it.

Starting point is 00:23:35 So that was the only thing that we saw in day one of practice in the last. limited action. But I also think the challenge with that is in these two periods, your rotation is not going to be as solidified. But when your guys like Hakeem Butler, Colby Katz, and these other guys that are trying to get opportunities, it's tough. Cameron Ross, another undrafted guy, did catch a pass. It wasn't a touchdown, but caught a pass in one of the seven-on-seven goal line periods from Sam Ellinger. It's hard just to evaluate because of these limited periods. Now, once you get to the actual practices where it is going to be full team period, right? You're going to open it up to where you're going to get seven on seven one day.

Starting point is 00:24:10 You're going to get team period one, special teams, team period two, special teams, team period three, move the ball. You're going to get more reps. You're going to get more of a sample size to evaluate. So hard to stand out in the initial period. We're only going to get two periods to work with. But that's where our excitement goes because these non-padded practices right now, we can evaluate the skilled players.

Starting point is 00:24:29 But it's hard to really evaluate this team and where they're at until the pads come on and the defensive line and the Broncos pass rush that was leading the NFL for the last two seasons and sacks can get after Bo Nix, try to fluster him. Nick Benito working against obviously guys like Garrett Bulls and Mike McGlinchie. You want to see that and you want to see these other guys getting involved there. The pads are going to tell the different story. But for the offense, it's getting these concepts that Davis Webb is introducing. And for these other guys that are going in there, getting reps, getting opportunities.

Starting point is 00:24:57 And when the ball is thrown your way, you got to make a play. Low Jordan Humphrey did have a drop in yesterday's practice. That would have been a touchdown. But then he did come back and he had a tough touchdown catch against Jayquant. It's just the nature of football. Sometimes the easy ones are there for you. You drop it. You lose side of it. And then the tough ones, you find a way to just lock in on that focus. So I'm excited about that linebacker. We're going to keep an eye on the rotation behind Alex Singleton and Justin Sternad there with Turin York and Red Murdoch. And that kind of goes into our final

Starting point is 00:25:26 everyday club member text message that comes in from our friend Timothy. He said, any injuries or updates from day one? We went through this a little bit in yesterday's show. But in case you did not tune into that if you missed it. Obviously one player left practice yesterday with an injury with trainers undisclosed injury, not sure exactly what it is. But Blake Cotton, he exited practice with the trainer, did not return. We'll see if he's back into the mix here this upcoming day. He was in an orange jersey wearing number 32. A lot of people had him initially confused with Dane Key. Dane is wearing a white jersey that has number 32, but there was a little bit of a number change there with Blake Cotton from the time we saw him during OTAs and mandatory minicamp.

Starting point is 00:26:06 he exited the field. We did not see tight-in Caleb Loner, who we know how to lower body procedure in the off-season. That was a surprise because he wasn't on the PUP list. He wasn't on the non-football injury list, though. And once again, he didn't suffer a non-football injury, but we did not see him out there or on the side field. So we'll see if that may be changes here coming into today's practice. And Jordan Turner, even though he landed on the non-football injury list earlier this week, he has been working on the side field. And I would anticipate a return for him here in the next week or so. he seems a lot closer than he does seeming far away. Like the fact that he's on the side field doing stuff,

Starting point is 00:26:39 working with trainers, and then he's coming and he's watching practice, observing the linebacker groups during that time when he's done with his training regimen of Broncos medical staff. So I think a return for him off the NFI list is probably approaching here very soon. Nick Garzullo, who ended up on the PUP list, he is on the side foot, which is a great sign. But the Broncos, they're not rushing his process back.

Starting point is 00:27:00 And they're getting a lot of looks right now with Cage Casey and other guys rotating in Alex Poucces. behind Ben Powers and really once again the offensive line defensive line we won't be able to evaluate that until there's actual contact allowed in the pads come on so very excited about that Broncos country Sarah and myself will have you covered here later on today with a recap of what comes out of practice the biggest storyline who stood out and so much more make sure you stay tuned here locked on Broncos we'll have you covered every step of the way we'll see you later on this afternoon
