Could we see the Denver Broncos maybe make a surprising move and use their best draft pick,
their first round pick on a defensive lineman in 2025?
We're going to talk about that, break down the position group from last season,
as well as ask some of our biggest questions about the defensive line here on today's episode,
Locked on Broncos.
You are Locked on Broncos, your daily Denver Broncos podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network,
your team every day.
It's definitely not the position group that everybody thinks of when you bring up,
hey, what's the biggest need the Broncos will have to address in 2025?
The defensive line doesn't often come up.
But you know what?
You always have one eye on the future.
And when we look at the Denver Broncos situation on the roster right now,
if you keep an eye on the future, it might make a lot of sense for this team to go after a defensive
lineman very early, maybe in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft.
We're going to talk about that on today's show.
we're going to talk about their best free agent, DJ Jones.
Is he going to be coming back?
One of the team's best run defenders hitting unrestricted free agency this offseason.
Broncos might try to bring him back, but will they be able to?
And then the defensive line room from 2024.
This was a unit that was arguably the worst on the team in 2023,
became one of the best on this team, maybe in the NFL in 2024.
A huge turnaround for this defensive line unit.
We're talking all about it today on this episode, Lockdown Broncos.
My name is Sarah Bedinger, co-host of the Lockdown Broncos podcast here,
as well as the site expert at predominantly orange.com.
And I'm excited to let you know that today's episode is brought to you by our friends at LinkedIn.

and Broncos country, man, we talk about this defensive line group from 2024, Zach Allen leading the way John Franklin Myers coming in and providing a boost that I don't know that anybody necessarily expected.
I mean, you remember last offseason, we had a number of discussions about what the folks over at ESPN and pro football focus were saying about this Denver Broncos roster and how they talked about this defensive line literally being the worst in the NFL.
I think it's safe to say that the Broncos proved them wrong.
When you talk about Zach Allen specifically, the second team all pro and a snub of a second team.
I mean, Zach Allen should have been first team all pro this past season,
arguably the most disruptive interior defensive lineman in the entire NFL.
Quarterback hit after quarterback hit, obviously had the season of his life for the Denver Broncos.
When you look at, I mean, my goodness, eight and a half sacks, 40 quarterback.
back hits. Had a safety. Remember early in the season? 15 tackles for loss, which was second on
the team behind just Nick Benito this past season. And what Zach Allen does, that goes so under
the radar is he plays almost every snap on the defensive side of the ball. And I say that, you know,
with the caveat that obviously he doesn't play literally every snap. When you look at his snap count
from this past season, however, I mean, he's out there the majority of the time, 964 snaps.
89% of the defensive snaps there for Vance Joseph.
And that is a career high for Zach Allen.
I mean, when you're talking about a defensive lineman,
especially on the interior,
who's playing nearly a thousand snaps,
even with 17 games in a season.
Like that is rare in today's NFL.
And Zach Allen is putting up these numbers with double teams coming his way.
Other than Nick Benito,
obviously the most double-teamed player on the entire roster for
Denver Broncos when it comes to edge guys, when it comes to interior defensive lineman,
like Zach Allen is that guy.
I'm very surprised that with 40 quarterback hits and eight and a half sacks, obviously he does
61 total tackles, 15 tackles for loss, so many pressures on top of that.
Let's let me show you right now.
The pressures for Zach Allen, let me look this up.
We go to the advanced stats over here at pro football reference, 47 pressures.
Now, get this, Zach Allen's previous career high in total pressures, 27.
That was last year for the Denver Broncos.
47 pressures.
I mean, he played over 900 snaps last year, too, folks.
So Zach Allen is one of the premier defensive linemen in the NFL.
And we're going to ask one of the biggest questions for 2025 coming up here and a little bit on the show.
Will the Broncos extend him?
But I think it's a little bit of a no-brainer.
And we'll talk about that behind Zach Allen on the defense.
line. And I say behind what John Franklin Myers did for the Denver Broncos this past year after
coming over in a trade with the Jets, which was essentially a, hey, do you want John Franklin Myers?
Here, have him. It was a 2026 sixth round pick or something like that, a crazy trade that you
don't really see for a player of this caliber, but the Jets were looking to dump salary. And even though
they apparently had this disdain for Sean Payton, they're still willing to do a deal with George
Peyton. And maybe that's why George
Peyton is so crucial for this Denver
Broncos team because the Broncos got John
Franklin Myers in a total
salary dump trade with the
Jets. And then he redid his contract
to come to Denver.
So seven sacks,
18 quarterback hits, 40
total tackles, eight
tackles for loss. It was a great,
great year for John Franklin
Myers on the defensive
line. And without, I mean, if you
discount what Zach Allen did, if you
take that out of the picture, like what John Franklin Myers put together this past season would be
one of the best years that we've seen from an interior defensive lineman in Denver in quite some time.
And that would include some of the better years that Draymont Jones had with the team.
So John Franklin Myers and Zach Allen taking those steps together this past season, elevated
this Denver defense, which led the NFL in Sacks, obviously.
And you can't forget guys like Malcolm Roach, who came in as a free agent from.
the New Orleans Saints. He was one of the guys that pro football focus actually quite liked last
off season when you talk about his, he has one of the best run stuff rates in the NFL. Well,
he came to Denver, had another outstanding season, 43 tackles, eight quarterback hits,
five tackles for loss, two and a half sacks. He played really well. And George Payton,
the general manager even said like he might have been our best offseason edition, right? So
Malcolm Roach was a great pickup for the Broncos. DJ Jones didn't play.
play as many snaps this year. And we'll talk a lot about Jones on today's episode of the show,
but 42 total tackles, three quarterback hits, a sack, a tackle for loss. Not huge production
there in terms of what DJ Jones brought to the table, but he's still, when you watch the tape,
when you watch him, you break down his snaps, man, he provides a lot per snap. And the Broncos got
a lot of guys involved in the defensive line this past season. Jordan Jackson, he played in all 17
games, 17 tackles. A couple of quarterback hits had his first NFL sack as well.
Yoma Uwazerike. He played in four games this past year and had half a sack. So a lot of guys
getting involved on the defensive line for the Denver Broncos. And the great news is the majority
of these guys are coming back in 2025. Like everybody but DJ Jones is under contract. And so
you're bringing back Zach Allen. You're bringing back John Franklin Meyer.
Malcolm Roach, you're bringing back Jordan Jackson, Ioma Uwazareke, and yet you still have a chance to really upgrade this roster on the defensive front.
Now, what did we see late in the season from this defensive front?
They got kind of bullied against the Buffalo Bills.
So hopefully they take that personal going into the offseason.
Hopefully this is something that they think about that game.
They use that as a motivating factor all offseason long because the Buffalo Bills whipped them up and down the field.
and the Broncos elite pass rush could not get much of a pass rush against Josh Allen there in the playoffs.
And so that leads us into kind of the questions for 2025, right?
Like how big of a need is the defensive line going forward?
Will DJ Jones, the team's top unrestricted free agent on the defensive line,
becoming back?
We're going to be breaking that down as well as a lot more here on today's episode,
Locked on Broncos.

One of the biggest questions for the Denver Broncos in the 2025 offseason is simply this is DJ Jones coming back.
And what does the team do if he doesn't, right?
So Broncos country, we're going to be breaking that down on today's episode of the show.
Once again, I want to give a mile high salute and say thank you to every single one of you,
everyday listeners out there who makes Lockdown Broncos your first listen.
of the day every single day.
For you, every day, as you know,
you know that your boys, Cody and Sayre,
we'll have you covered all offseason long
with Denver Broncos news content coverage
and more.
Hopefully in the near future,
we'll be talking about some intriguing coaching hires,
right, for the Denver Broncos after a weekend in which,
I mean, we saw David Shaw go to the Detroit Lions.
We heard about Darren Rizzi,
potentially coming to the Broncos as special teams coordinator.
We're going to be talking about all those moves
as soon as they become officially official here in the next
handful of days and weeks upcoming. So make sure you're subscribed if you haven't done so already.
And you're going to want to be subscribed to find out what's going to be going down with
DJ Jones this off season because Jones is one of the Broncos top unrestricted free agents in
2025. They took care of a lot of their own guys during the season. When you talk about
Garrett Bulls, you talk about Quinn Miners, you talk about Pat Sertan, and then obviously
a number of others who were going to be potential free agents in the next year or two.
But DJ Jones is one of those players that, remember, he signed three years ago.
His contract is already up from signing a three-year deal, $30 million with the Denver Broncos back in the 2022 off season.
And when Jones came to Denver, he was coming off of a year in San Francisco in which he had 56 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits.
Now, in his final two years with San Francisco, let's point this out because this is really important.
he had a total of 17 tackles for loss and five sacks okay 17 tackles for loss and five sacks in his in his last two years in san francisco 20 and
2021 in denver in three seasons dj jones has been very good i don't want to diminish what dj jones has
been he's done a lot of different things for this team to help this defense get better and better
nine tackles for loss, five total sacks in three seasons for the Denver Broncos.
And he has grown a bit as a pass rusher.
In San Francisco, his last three years there, he had a combined total of eight
quarterback hits.
With Denver, he had eight quarterback hits in his first two seasons, had three
quarterback hits this past season.
So there's improvement there.
What you really needed to see, I think, from DJ Jones in order to justify that maybe
bringing him back even at a rate anywhere close to that three years, 30 million is a lot more
plays behind the line of scrimmage. Now, does he command a lot of attention of attention when
he's out there? Absolutely he does. I mean, he played 465 snaps this past year, which is his
lowest as a Denver Bronco. It is his lowest since 2020. The percentage of snaps that he played,
40%. That is the lowest that he's played since becoming a full-time starter in the NFL.
In fact, it's the lowest percentage that he's played since 2018 when he was with San Francisco,
and he only appeared in 10 games.
And so DJ Jones, obviously, is one of those guys that he's become super effective in a
more limited role on the defensive line.
And frankly, that's true for a lot of guys on the defensive line.
Like, Zach Allen's of the world, like we mentioned, it's really rare.
to see defensive lineman playing nearly 90% of the snaps.
So don't get too hung up on the fact that DJ Jones is playing 40%.
But at the same time, when you talk about what he counts against the salary cap,
I mean, playing less than 500 snaps is a little tougher to justify the price tag, right?
And you hoped that DJ Jones could continue to develop.
That guy that we saw with 17 tackles for loss in his last two years with the 49ers,
you hoped that he could continue to build on that,
like continually be making plays behind the line of scrimmage.
Does DJ Jones make a lot of plays that are just run stuff like,
you know, one or two yards past the line of scrimmage?
Absolutely.
He makes plenty of plays.
And when he, like I said before,
he shows up consistently on the tape in terms of playing with leverage
and being trustworthy and reliable on those early downs.
I would say that Jones playing 40% of the snaps this past season,
has way less to do with his, you know, inability, if you want to say it like that.
Or it's, it's so much less of a thing about him and so much more of a thing about,
hey, we got so many guys that need to play.
Like Malcolm Roach has to play.
John Franklin Myers, Zach Allen, those guys have to play.
And then other guys, like, we've got our, what we see with Vance Joseph oftentimes is that
he's got these edge guys coming in and rotating as well.
So there's so many, there's only so many snaps to go.
around, right? And that's the way that you kind of have to look at it when it comes to the defensive
line and playing on the interior specifically, these guys, keeping them fresh is good over the long
haul of a 17 game season, being able to bring pass rush or being able to bring, you know,
like a, it's like a hockey team, right? You can change lines out at any given time. It feels like
the Broncos have that same type of luxury, right? They can, they can change lines. They can say,
all right, it's Benito and Alan and Franklin Myers and Cooper, and then we can change lines.
We can go with Tillman and we can go with Roach and Jones and, you know, whoever else,
Jonah Ellis, like they can change lines and be effective in that way.
And Vance Joseph loves that luxury.
And so I do believe the Broncos.
And when it comes to the question of will DJ Jones return in 2025, I do believe the Broncos
will have interest in bringing him back now.
It is not going to be at the same rate at which we saw him get paid when he was a free agent from the 49ers.
When he got 10 million average annual value from the Denver Broncos, that is not going to happen.
I think you could slice that in half, right?
Because he's playing 40% of the snaps.
And unless he's going to go to a team that's saying, hey, we want you to play 60, 65% of the snaps,
that team's probably going to offer Jones more money.
Maybe, you know, Robert Salah, the San Francisco 49ers, they need.
defensive line help. Maybe Jones makes it full circle and goes back there. I think he's going to
draw interest from other teams. And the primary reason being, he's a really good player. And there's
no question about it. And so Broncos country, I wouldn't be married to the idea that Jones is going to be
back for 2025, although I do think that the team will want him back. Right. And there's no question
that they should want him back. The other big question this offseason, and it's not necessarily as pressing,
I mean, we're about a month, you know, a month and a week away from free agency at this point.
So that the situation with Jones is going to reach a boiling point sooner or later.
The situation with Zach Allen and an extension.
Will the Broncos give Zach Allen a contract extension in the 2025 off season?
It's probably smart to do so, isn't it?
Because obviously you don't want him to test free agency in 2026.
You don't want him to get to free agency.
And well, okay, now all of a sudden, the market.
value is going to creep way up.
The Broncos are going to take care of their own.
The Broncos are going to take care of the guys who are doing things the way that they
want them to be done.
They've already invested in Zach Allen.
They renegotiated a bit of his contract this past year to free up some salary cap space.
So he's not going anywhere anytime soon.
And I think that an extension will be in the works absolutely.
And you have to keep a guy like this around, right?
I mean, how can you say, well, you know, we'll see what happens.
Like the Broncos bought into Zach Allen as an ascending player when he was coming from the Arizona
Cardinals in 2023.
Now he's ascended into an all pro player.
Like make no mistake about it.
The second team all pro distinction that he got this past year, like that's going to be ignored
when it comes to the contract negotiations.
He played like a first team all pro.
He's going to get paid like a first team all pro.
And I think that's probably going to happen more towards the.
summer training camp, maybe the start of the regular season.
I don't think you need to kind of, you know,
and the Broncos could very well surprise all of us and be like,
all right, let's look at Zach Allen's cap hit right now,
because obviously that matters in this conversation.
Like with Zach Allen's total money,
you don't have to worry about the Broncos making a, you know,
rash decision here.
They don't, there's, it's going to cost you 20 million a year.
Let's say that to bring him back at a minimum.
on a new contract.
But when you look at his cap hit for this coming season,
19.825 million in a salary cap hit.
He has three void years beyond this year,
which is just a bonus that's, you know,
rolling into void years.
So when you add void years to a player's contract like that,
I think it kind of means that you want to bring them back
or you want to keep them around like you're kicking the can forward like that.
And the Broncos had to do that because of the Russell Wilson situation.
but the Broncos could substantially reduce Zach Allen's cap hit in 2025 by extending him anytime in the near future, right?
And so last year they converted 14.125 million according to Spot Track into a salary cap signing bonus.
And that cleared over 11 million in cap space for the Broncos.
And so this team is giving him additional guaranteed money.
Like they want him around.
They believe in him.
I do think an extension is going to happen.
And look, if they have big plans for free agency, you've got the cash, the ownership group.
Like, who cares about the cash?
Go ahead and give Allen the extension now and clear the cap space and go ahead and free yourself up for even more options in free agency.
But Broncos country, when it comes to the defensive line, it's not just about the guys that are on the roster or DJ Jones who might be leaving.
It's about the 2025 NFL draft where interior defensive line, in specific.
might be the strongest position group in this class, might be the best bang for your buck,
and might be the direction the Denver Broncos head with their first round pick.
We're going to talk about it.
Could they make a shocking move and use their top pick in the 2025 NFL draft on the defensive
line?
We got all that coming up on today's episode, Lockdown Broncos.
Today's episode Lockdown Broncos is brought to you by prize picks.

This week, I'm looking at the board and I'm selecting.
I think I'd take more for Travis Kelsey.
You don't think Patrick Mahom is going to get the ball to Travis Kelsey in this game, right?
I'm going more on receiving yards.
And I'd say, you know what?
People are a little low on Jalen Hertz.
I'd be taking the more on Jalen Hertz passing yardage in this game.
I feel like he's going to get A.J. Brown and Devante Smith involved heavily.

Could the Broncos make a shocking move on the defensive line here in 2025?
Well, obviously, it remains to be seen.
There's a lot of time between now and the NFL draft a couple of months at this point.
So it's going to go fast.
But one of the topics that's being discussed pretty heavily amongst Broncos country is,
is the smartest play in the 2025 NFL draft to take from the best position group,
which is the interior defensive line.
And for Broncos country, the discussion all offseason has centered around mostly like,
hey, we got to get offensive playmakers.
We got to help out Bo Nix.
But we all know that in addition to the playmakers, helping
bow nix having a defense that's going to get off you know get off the field quickly and give you
you extra possessions as an offense that can be equally as effective right i mean that's what the
offense wants and needs more than anything you want snaps you want possessions you want to win time of
possession and you win time of possession by having a good defense i can get off the field quickly
how do you establish a great defense as quickly as possible you elevate the level of talent
on the defensive front cody and i talked about that all off season
in 2024, that if the Broncos could raise the floor on the defensive line, which they absolutely
did by bringing in John Franklin Myers, Malcolm Roach, if you can raise the floor on the defensive
line, you set yourself up in the NFL to be competitive in just about every game. And when I say
competitive, I mean, you're going to keep it close because if teams can't run the ball on you,
if teams, if you rush the passer, like, you're going to be able to stay in games more often than
not. But if you're getting gashed on the ground, if you can't get a pass rush, it doesn't matter how good
your playmakers are on offense. Just ask the Cincinnati Bengals this past year who missed the
playoffs entirely. So look, I think with the Denver Broncos on the defensive line, it would seem like
adding, you know, a strength to a strength by using a first round pick on the defensive line. But at the
same time, it makes a lot of sense because nobody on this roster right now is under contract beyond
2025. That includes
Zach Allen. That includes John Franklin
Myers, Malcolm Roach.
All the guys who are going to play massive, massive
roles in 2025,
they are free agents in
26. The Broncos are going to have to take
care of that, and I believe that they will. I believe
we'll see some extensions handed out
this offseason and guys will be brought back.
So we don't need to worry about it.
But I do believe, because
of the way that the NFL works,
one of the most expensive positions
to pay,
It's the interior defensive line.
That's why you're seeing guys like Quinn Miners now get $20 million a year on the interior
offensive line because teams are finding and discovering, hey, we can get these game
wreckers up the middle.
And now teams are paying more to have the guys who can stop the game wreckers up the middle,
right?
And so the Broncos know that they have something special on the defensive line.
There's no question about it.
But when it comes to the NFL draft, you always have to keep one eye on the future.
not just the present, right?
You don't always just draft for your most immediate need.
And right now, defensive tackle doesn't seem like an immediate need for the Denver Broncos.
But I think you have to lump it up there with some of the immediate needs because of how drastic that will change in 2026.
You do not want to be caught with, for lack of a better term.
You don't want to be caught with your pants down after 2025.
You get to the 26 off season.
Let's just say you didn't get an extension done with Zach.
Allen. He's going to test free agency or he's going to at least, you know,
threatened to test free agency. You didn't get an extension done with John Franklin
Myers or Malcolm Roach. All these guys are going to be gone. They're going to hit free agency.
That's kind of worst case scenario. But what happens if you pass on this interior
defensive line class in 2025 when you had a chance to get somebody special? Now, I'm not saying
that the Broncos should for sure take a defensive tackle round one, but I'm saying that if that's
the deepest position group with top end talent, that's the thing that you,
got to consider here is that the guy that you might get at tight end at pick number 20 might be
way lower on your big board than the guy that's at defensive tackle, right? So you've got to
consider 2025 and 2026 needs when it comes to using your premium assets in the NFL draft.
An interior defensive line, make no mistake about it, that is a need for 2026 and beyond.
And if the Broncos can get a stud on a rookie contract there might be a no-brainer for general
manager George Peyton. And so Broncos country, we want to know your thoughts too. Let us know
Soundoff on YouTube. Let Cody and I know on Twitter. What are your thoughts about should the Broncos
use a first round pick on the defensive line in 2025? Maybe a second round pick as well. That could be,
I mean, maybe that's the situation, right? Is that the guy who maybe has a late first, early second
round grade for the Broncos falls to their picking round two and you just can't pass on him like they did
with Jonah Ellis last year at the edge position,
even though that wasn't an immediate position area of need.
You saw a guy that was just high on your board.
You had to have him at a premium position.
And interior defensive line,
it's a premium position in today's NFL
in terms of the way guys are getting paid.
But Broncos country,
we appreciate you so much for tuning into today's episode.
Cody and I are going to be talking about defensive backs
on tomorrow's episode of the show.
And of course,
we're breaking down any breaking news that comes about
for the Denver Broncos.
Broncos.
If we'll talk a little bit about Pat Sertan's comments about playing wide receiver,
doing a little bit of what Travis Hunter is probably about to do coming into the NFL.
It could be fun to see a package of plays or two.
And we know Sean Payton.
He's the mad hatter out there.
He will do weird stuff.
And so you never know.
But Broncos Country, we appreciate you so much for your first or second listen of the day.
Go check out Lockdown NFL.
We've got great stuff going on over there.
And definitely can't wait to see you on tomorrow's episode of the show.
Mile High Salute.
We'll see you soon.
