The Denver Broncos wrapped up the NFL preseason in dominant fashion.
And if you are a podcast that has a beer logo in the basement, it's a bad day for you,
according to Sean Payton.
You are locked on Broncos.
Your daily Denver Broncos podcast.
Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
The Denver Broncos wrap up the preseason two and one.
And now the regular season is here.
I'm Cody Rourke, joined as always by Senator Bedinger, Broncos country.
get into our post-game report here as we talk about some strong showings from several players
on the offensive side of the ball, defensive side of the ball, and even special teams,
and even which players stood out and made a case for the 53-man roster.
A running back made a really strong case, and it's not the name that you think.
And we'll also go through and hand out our game balls from the Bronco's big-time victory against the Vikings here.
In week three of the NFL preseason, Sarah, my friend, I tell you what,
much better post-game show this week compared to last week against Green Bay, a very dominant
fashion victory by the Denver Broncos against the Vikings, 34 to 6.
Once again, I want to get your takeaway because it played out how you and I predicted in our game preview show earlier on on Friday that Jared Sidham would get to start, play a series or two, and then they would be Ellinger the rest of the way.
That was the case.
Cody, I think we, did we nail the three touchdown bold prediction for, uh, Sam, I mean, shoot, hey, let's go.
And the red Murdoch force fumble.
And the red, hey, all right.
Okay, so now people, now people have some receipts for week one when we make our bold predictions and say,
hey, we're on a streak right now on the bold predictions there.
But yes, I mean, obviously this team took the coaching from Sean Payton and everybody else on the staff
over this last week very seriously, one through 90, which you kind of just love to see.
I think obviously you can sit there and diminish this preseason game as meaningless.
You can say that, well, it doesn't really matter for any of these guys.
not making the team anyway. Well, they responded to coaching, and I think you've created a
culture and you've established a culture on this team that it does matter to these guys. And they
realize they're playing not just for 53-man roster spots, but practice squad spots. And then
Sean Peyton said during and after the game, you never know when a judge, like, on the voice,
is going to turn their chair around right before the end of the song, right? So you got to be
doing your best out there and putting your best foot forward. But I thought we did see some guys,
make really strong cases, whether it's for the practice squad, whether it's even for the 53 man
roster, honestly. And I think that discussion, to me, it starts with Colby Katzis, Cody. So we'll
talk about him, I'm sure, as the game goes along. But really good stuff from the team overall in
this game, just get a dominating victory fresh off of getting your, you know, kind of a humbling
loss against the Packers last week. Yeah, I felt like collectively in all three phases, I felt like
the offense came out. They did a really good job of running the football. What did Dave
website earlier on the week. He said, we're going to run the ball much better. I mean, that's
exactly what the Broncos did. They finished this game with over 400 yards of offense,
101 yards on the ground. And they really kind of spread that rushing production, you know,
amongst really three guys. And, you know, you can count four if you want to give Adam Prentice,
you know, a handoff here or there, who scored his second touchdown of the NFL preseason. But I felt
like there were so many different guys that stood out in this game. I thought Jared Stidham,
Early on, I felt like after the throw to Marvin Mims, which got Mims rolled up,
and I was like, ah, what was that type of throw?
But I think Stidham settled in.
He finished the night, six of nine for 78 yards, March the Broncos offense downfield.
I mean, 10 points, two possessions, very similar to what we saw from Bo Nix against
Screen Bay just last week.
But Sam Ellinger, I'm going to give him his props.
I thought he got off to a rough start here in this game against Minnesota.
He was staring down that cover two window, and he tried to fit that ball down the left
sideline the safety read it from the onset jumped it and i was like ah rough that rough play there but
eleanor did so many things well after that you know that's one thing i think i liked about his performance
was he shook off a negative and there were several times where i'm watching him in the press box
and i'm i'm looking at him and he's got pressure in his face he hesitates and like makes a guy
miss and then he delivers strikes i mean three touchdown passes for him overall in the night
including the 88 yard touchdown pass to a wide open justin jolie i mean no one was covering
him at that point. That was one of the craziest developments I've seen in a preseason game.
But I like the way that he responded in particular from having a little bit of a rough start
early on in this game. And he really needed to, right? Because honestly, this was his best
opportunity of the preseason, right? I mean, he got about three quarters of work in this game and
had to kind of prove that, okay, the talk about him potentially even being QB2 was justified.
because we haven't really seen that in the on-field reps in terms of how they've been divided up.
Jared Stidham has been the clear quarterback too when it comes to at least the preseason games,
even though they've maybe rotated a little bit during camp.
But I thought he did a great job of taking advantage of the opportunity.
I thought he did a really good job of getting the running backs involved in the passing game.
And it wasn't a ton of downfield stuff.
Didn't see a ton of stuff to the wide receivers in this game, certainly.
But, you know, when it comes to playing point guard, when it comes to taking advantage of,
aggressive defense that's blitzing constantly and trying to get pressure in your face.
What do you have to do?
Well, you have to use the quick passing game.
You have to look underneath.
Swing passes.
You got to avoid pressure.
I thought he did a really good job of that in particular in this game.
So, yes, the QB2 discussion, I don't think is going to be much longer here.
Obviously, Cody, as the Broncos get ready to assemble their rosters, which they have to do
by Sunday evening at 4 p.m. mountain time, I think we'll have a.
very clear idea and Ellinger was pretty clear after the game in multiple interviews
saying like, hey, if you could take a QB2 job somewhere else or be the QB3 here,
what would you rather do? And he talked about, you know, situation matters. And this,
you know, the situation in Denver is maybe the best QB3 job you can possibly have in the NFL
now. So I think he likes being with the Broncos, but I wouldn't be surprised if a performance
like this, even with the interception, gets him some looks elsewhere. Yeah, I'm, I'm,
sure there's going to be some teams that'll probably be interested in him. One thing I even think
to pay attention to, like Sean Payton, I was there for the press conference and he was asked,
do you know, do you think you could keep three quarterbacks? And, you know, typical Sean
response. We'll see. I feel like it's trending that way a little bit, right? But obviously,
like, you have to figure out what do the roster gymnastics? What are the numbers look like at other
positions? What's the aftermath of this game specifically? Because so many players didn't play in this
game, but a lot of your younger guys did. So I think for the most part, Sean said he's going to
spend more time on the players that he knows are going to make the roster versus the ones that,
you know, they already know kind of going into it. It's like, nah, this guy's not going to make the
53. But what are those conversations like? And I think quarterback is one of the, do we carry three
specifically? I personally think it's trending that way. We've seen stranger things happen, but also,
once again, like, Sam is a vested veteran. Sam could easily say, you know, the Broncos be like,
look, we have to do this because we need numbers here. I think Sam would be willing to do that,
we would be willing to stay unless there's an opportunity, a great opportunity.
Like if you were called upon to go be the backup to Patrick Palms, right,
then I'm sure he'd be like, yep, I'll go do that.
Like that probably would be a more fruitful thing for him than being QB3 here in Denver.
But overall, I'm very curious to see how Broncos country responds from all of this.
I just felt like both those guys did a really good job.
Let's talk about the defense here real quick.
Did a really good job of limiting, I think, the big explosive plays in this game to Minnesota.
You know, there were a couple of moments here.
there where the Broncos gave up maybe a, you know, 15 plus, 20 plus yard catch.
They gave up one catch.
I think the longest catch was like a 26 yard catch and run that happened in this game.
But overall, they held the Vikings to what was it, 89 total yards rushing, 180 total
yards passing.
I mean, this was for the mass rotation of guys, the second unit and the third team unit,
and those guys all blending and mixing.
I thought Denver did a really good job specifically on third down.
I mean, Minnesota was three of 13 and third down in this game specifically.
And what did we see from the Broncos last year?
Not the starters, right?
But like with the starters, they were one of the best third down defenses in the NFL.
So that standard is now going down to the second and 13 units.
That's just a testament to, I think, good coaching.
Yeah.
And I think it gave them opportunities, obviously, to see a number of different guys in those situations.
I saw Johnny Walker Jr. got his first QB hit, I think, of the preseason.
And certainly a lot of other guys getting active, players blitzing, a little bit more of the stunts from the defensive
of Lyman, Tyler O'Neettam, got to the QB for a big play.
And did you see Tori in York just hitting people?
He was out there.
He was flying around.
I, I've seen a lot of, including even some of my stuff, you know, him not being on
roster projections.
I think it'll be interesting what happens with him because you could, you know,
probably get Jordan Turner back on the practice squad, call him up.
He'll be an interesting one to see Cody.
But yeah, the defense did its job getting off the field on third downs, giving an opportunity
to see some of those punt returners in action.
Because I think with the Marvin Mims injury early in this game,
which we know now it's just a bruise,
according to Sean Payton,
well, I think it's important still to see those other return men
get opportunities and maybe build some confidence going into the season
because it looks like their number at least maybe at some point might get called.
Yeah, well, we saw that here in tonight's preseason game.
And one of the running backs, like Denver's top three backs,
didn't play in this game,
but one running back made a really strong case for himself for the 53 man roster.
If Denver carries four, we'll talk about that next.

There are a number of players that made a strong case for the 53-man roster in the preseason finale.
Might not have shaken up the roster a ton, but certainly, Cody, there's a possibility.
and Sean Payton sounded pretty passionate about this after the game about getting that chair to turn around, so to speak.
I mean, I like the analogy he used there, the voice audition, who was going to be impressing the judges.
Cody's already doing it.
I love it, Cody.
I love the analogy, honestly.
I think it was a great sort of way of putting it in terms of, hey, you know, you get to the very end of a song.
None of the judges have turned around at that point.
and then all of a sudden all it takes as one judge to flip around and you're on the show.
So I like that analogy.
He brought up Rahim Most.
He called him Most Moss.
I don't even remember what he called it.
He said he was talking about Rahim Moster, but he said something different.
And then he also talked about Victor Cruz.
So they were looking for that guy in this game.
Do you think there was anybody that performed to that level in this game that the chair is turning around for him?
Man, I tell you, where did Cody Schrader come from?
Right?
Like Cody Schrader had, you know, a great game.
So it's like when I was in the elevator going down, I heard Sean pay say,
Cody did well.
I was like, thank, thanks, Sean.
I was like, oh, he's not talking to me.
Cody.
But my goodness, I thought Schrader ran really hard.
I mean, there were some times and he took some shots, but he's tough.
I think he's patient.
There was one play in particular where he ran behind this offensive lineman,
and the offensive lineman was kind of just like dancing.
And he kind of pushed the offensive lineman into the safety and then went up the left sideline
for a big game. Not only that, just even out of the backfield.
Over, what was it? If I'm not mistaken, I think he had 90 yards on six catches in this game.
So over 100 all-purpose yards for Cody Schrader also has the ability to play special teams for you.
I thought if you were looking at that, he made a strong case.
Jolil McLaughlin, not necessarily had the strongest rushing performance,
but they used them out of the backfield, had a nice 20-yard catch-and-run touchdown from Ellinger in this game.
So Cody Schrader, in my opinion, if we're making the analogy that Sean did with the voice, it is him.
He's one of those standouts.
And look, there, of course, there's always going to be people out there that talk about,
oh, in the third and final preseason game, none of it matters.
You don't have to pay attention.
Like, there's no one to pay attention to no one's going to make that decision based on this game.
I think those people have a disconnect from reality because Sean Payton himself said it.
There's a chance out there.
Make us turn the chair around and show us that, you know, we have to be.
we have to put you on our roster.
That's what Denver has done with other guys in the past.
I thought Shredder stood up.
But also your guy, Colby Katz, Sarah, in special context of the Marvin Mim situation,
like we were thinking like, okay, Marvin has the foot injury before we found out, you know,
that he's good, he's okay.
We've talked about return.
Like every game in the preseason, Kobe Katzis has had a big return.
And I will give him credit.
I had said back at minicamp and throughout training camp, my concern with him was he wasn't
catching it cleanly all the time in practice.
I have not seen that issue so far here in the preseason in the game.
So tip of the cap to Colby.
He's done really well.
I mean, he had a 49-yard kickoff return in this game.
And then he had a 13-yard punt return that, man, the way that he ran that one back,
it felt like it was way longer than 13 yards.
And I was hoping he was going to go for way longer than 13.
But kind of crossed the whole field, started to try and read the blocks a little bit,
and then got pulled down by his face mask a little bit there at the end of that one.
But certainly the 49-yard return on kickoff.
return was more indicative of what we've seen from him, which is he has this way of getting up
to the lane that they're creating for him with a level of quickness that's not rushed.
And then when he hits the jets, man, he hits the jets.
And he's got some serious speed.
And he's got just an innate feel, I think, for the return game.
So that's something that Marvin Mims also has, Cody, that you can just tell that a guy,
okay, some guys are fast, some guys are good ball carriers, some guys are good at catching the ball,
you know, but not everybody can do all those things in the return game for whatever reason.
We saw it last year with Tyler Badegh and RJ Harvey even in the kickoff return game.
They just didn't provide the necessary depth.
And that's not just me saying that.
That's Darren Rizzy saying that.
He came to the podium this week and said that he thinks that their depth in the return game is better now than it was last year.
and he kind of made reference to the idea that whether it's on the roster or the practice squad
or what have you, like that they feel that they would have better depth.
I hope that a guy like Colby Katzis could sneak to the practice squad,
but you also hope that he doesn't become the next Khalif Raymond,
who remember the Broncos had him for the longest time,
and then he gets cut and he goes to Detroit,
and he all of a sudden becomes a really good return specialist for them,
as well as an offensive gadget player.
So I thought Colby did a great job making a strong case for the 53 in this game for sure.
Was there anybody else that you felt stood out really in this game other than we talked about
Ellinger, anybody else for you?
Well, I was going to say if he wasn't already a roster lock, Q Robinson, man,
he was everywhere when he was on the field.
I'm excited to see what he can do.
And it almost kind of seems like Sean Payton in his post game press conference was kind
of hinting.
I think Jonathan Cooper, and I know Mike Cliss, our good friend at 9 News, put this out as well.
I think the expectation is maybe Monday Cooper lands on the commissioner's exempt list.
I think that's something that is probably coming up here.
So they want to see more looks at Jonah.
I thought Jonah and Q did a really good job.
I thought Dandre did a really good job when stepping in as well.
So you're not worried about your pass rush guys there on the outside.
If I had to maybe talk about another guy who maybe stood out,
before he obviously left the game with a concussion,
I thought Reese Taylor did a really good job coming up and tackling.
I liked what I see from him.
He kind of plays a hybrid outside and playing the nickel
from time to time.
Just liked what I saw from those guys.
Red Murdoch, you know, throwing out, you know,
his name, Tori in York.
I liked what I saw from those guys specifically at linebacker.
So the tough part is coming up, though, here for George and Sean.
And part of me, too, is wondering how much time between now,
and this is just an hour and a half after the game has ended that you and are sitting down
and recording this, how long and how much time do they spend on their 53?
How much do they spend on, like, moving the name up and down off the whiteboard with the magnet, saying, okay, this guy, you know, some team will probably claim him or is this guy vested?
Like those, how long do those conversations take place?
Because we could see the Broncos get started on their roster cuts probably as early as Saturday, Saturday morning, so to speak.
So something to pay attention to here, obviously, is the Broncos have to get ready to become roster compliant by Sunday.
As Sarah mentioned earlier, 4 o'clock p.m. Mountain time.
But coming up next is the fun part.
We always like this. After victory, we hand out our game balls.
I'm excited to see who Sarah's going to hand his out to and make sure Broncos country,
you share yours along the way.
You'll get that next here on today's episode of the show.

We appreciate you so much here, Brock's country.
Sarah, I'm going to get things kicked off here with the game.
I'm going to give one to Sean Payton.
Sean Payton dropped what.
I believe is an all-time post-game press conference gem where everyone that maybe has no idea
about this, there was an analyst that went on TV, Jeff Schwartz, who played at the University of Oregon,
ironically enough. And he was saying that Bo Nix has not turned into anybody else.
Like, Bo is the same guy he was in college and said any other than pushed the ball and I felt
Sean Payton publicly called him out on Twitter, pretty much ratio to Jeff Schwartz into oblivion.
And then he talked about it a little bit after the game. And he was talking about, you know,
some of us in the meetroom, he's like, you guys grind at it.
But like his thing was, is like nowadays, there's all these other things going on.
There's the, you know, you got all these basement podcasts with the beer logo in the background.
I was like, man, it must be a tough day to be one of those podcasts out there.
I tell you, it's crazy, my friend.
I'm going to give one to Sean Payton.
I like that pick, Cody.
Honestly, I think that that whole situation was hilarious.
And it's fun to see him kind of, I wouldn't say it's breaking character because I think that's kind of part of who he
is. He'll call people out for things that he sees or reads or things like that. But you just kind of
never really know, like, how much he's actually seeing and reading. And so it's funny. It's like,
man, Sean Peyton got time today. I'm going to give a couple of game balls to a couple of guys who,
I think, are underrated pieces of this team. But this game really kind of proved that, you know,
they can play a pivotal role without necessarily getting the ball all the time. I think Adam Prentice and
Nate Adkins from this game.
Adam Prentice, I tweeted
out during the game, Atomatic
Prentice. He's automatic out
there every time he gets him. Third and short.
Third and short, fourth and short,
goal to go situation.
And guess what's going to happen? When the Broncos
have him out there on the field for a
third and short situation,
at some point they're going to be able to
pull out the rug from underneath the defense and do
something different than hand it to Adam Prentice
and the defense won't expect it because
that's successful play. Or the
Broncos can just hand it off to him and gain the one yard because it seems to be automatic, you know.
But Nate Adkins as well, I really liked what we saw from him in this game because, well, he gets kind of a bad rap, I think, for not necessarily being a playmaker.
He had a 26-yard catch and run in this game where he showed off some playmaking skills.
I think he was the guy who made a key block to seal off the edge on Cody Schrader's early 13-yard run, which is one of his longest runs at the game at that point.
And so I liked what we saw from both of these guys.
And I think they're going to play some pivotal role player roles for this team that might be unsung,
but definitely showed in this game why they can still be valuable.
Yeah.
I think Nate brings that to the table.
I think the thing with Adam, right, is he's a vested veteran.
I mean, if the Rock goes truly want to play the flexibility game at another position,
yes, I'm sure they have a handshake agreement with Adam in that situation.
But I think Adam's done a lot to earn that role.
It was very interesting, though, too, to also see, we didn't see a lot of little Jordan Humphrey in this game.
There wasn't many targets for him.
I'm going to give a game ball to Troy Franklin.
And the reason I'm going to give that, because you mentioned Adam Prentice and you mentioned Nate Atkins.
On Nate Atkins big catch and run, he had Troy Franklin is doing a heck of a job downfield blocking.
I felt like there were several instances when Troy was in early in the game where I thought he was very active, even though he wasn't seeing targets.
He's blocking his tail off.
Like, those are the things.
He's like, are you, if you're not getting the ball thrown to you, are you throwing a Jerry Judy?
And are you saying, well, at least I got my cardio in or are you out there and you're still finding work?
Troy was finding work.
So I'm going to give a shout out to Troy.
Troy's going to get one of my game balls here.
I just think the effort, the attentiveness to just being involved.
Like Troy, I think is very accepting of his role, even though like for him personally isn't as a wide receiver.
He's got high ambitions and high goals for himself.
He wants to double his numbers from last year, right?
Over 700 yards receiving, what was it, six touchdowns?
He wants to double that.
Well, that's going to be hard in this offense.
So how can you go out there and earn more snaps or more opportunities?
It's going out there doing things like blocking.
That's the stuff that this coaching staff, they're going to pay attention to.
100%.
And he needs to show that stuff.
I think it's confidence building for him as well to be able to go out there and prove that you can do it,
to prove that you can be relied upon.
It does feel a little bit like he's maybe slipped to at best,
the fourth receiver on the depth chart,
that we know that Sean Payton doesn't necessarily care about those numbers or care about those
things like that.
I mean, obviously when you're sitting Portland Sutton, Jalen Waddle, and Pat Bryant for a game,
sends a pretty clear message.
So reading between the lines needed right there.
I'll give the last game ball for myself, Cody, to Cody Schrader.
I mean, we've talked about him already, but, man, he had a great game.
90 yards receiving, like you mentioned, 42 yards rushing.
So 132 yards from scrimmage on, let's see, 19 total touches.
Pretty dang good.
Pretty dang good showcase for Cody Schrader in this game.
I know the Broncos, they saw him get cut last year by three different teams,
the Rams, the Jaguars, the Texans, they scoop him up off waivers.
And then they, I believe, cut him and put him on the practice squad.
So he was just up and down all these rosters last year.
And he's got an interesting story playing at Mizzou.
but before that was kind of like one of the best players, I think at Division 2 or something like that.
I can't remember the exact story, but he could climb his way up to Division 1.
And then one year at Missouri, you know, to be an undrafted free agent in the NFL and, you know, to get cut by all these teams.
So cool to see him have a really big game.
I thought that was nice to see.
And maybe, you know, you never know what could happen after a game like that.
Maybe the chair turns brown.
Yeah, you never know.
I mean, and that's the thing, too.
like I think a lot of people look at this game and say, okay,
like do you risk losing Schrader?
Like there will be a team out there that probably needs some running back depth or running back help.
And maybe it's one of these other teams there that he's already played for this.
Like, hmm, okay, he's had a chance to go there.
And also maybe we play that team this year.
Maybe we play the Broncos this year.
We want to try to snag this guy.
That might be something that the Broncos might be thinking.
I'm very curious.
I think he gets one.
I would also give a game ball to Davis Webb.
I felt like just the flow of the offensive rhythm in today's game,
was methodical. Like late in the fourth quarter, one thing I was paying attention to, because there was a long third quarter.
I was sitting here. I was like, I thought that third quarter was the fourth quarter in the press box.
But I'm sitting there and I'm watching like the Broncos.
The offenses on the field are huddling, right? And usually we know they like Davis wants to go more up tempo.
But I watch it. They're just letting the clock run down to about eight.
Like they break the huddle. They're letting the clock run down. And then they're running the football.
So it's like, okay, it's smart methodical. I thought once again, 400 something yards of offense in this game,
seven to 14 on third down.
It felt like any time it was third and short,
Broncos were converting.
They were picking it up, whereas last year it felt like just getting two yards
on third and three was very hard for this team.
So yes, it's the preseason.
Yes, it's a different unit, but I want to give Davis a game ball for that.
And also the Broncos, only three penalties in this game, Sarah,
three penalties for 19 yards.
How far we have come from the, the bocco that was even just last week here
in the penalty department here.
But with that said, Broncos Country,
