The Broncos choosing to keep three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. I don't agree with the move, but I'll tell you why I think maybe the team has benefit in keeping three guys here. Then we'll talk about the string of several Broncos rookie players from this year's draft class getting cut and why that was a surprise. Some of the names were surprised to us as we break it down. Plus, Tyler Biday is in. Jalil McLaughlin is out in the Broncos. running back room as Denver chooses to keep four, but what's to give? We'll go through all that here

Starting point is 00:01:10 on today's episode of the show. Let's get into the biggest topic right now here. Obviously, the Broncos, they set their 53 man roster. But one of the bigger storylines coming out of it or going into roster cuts, we were all talking about it last Friday before the preseason game. I threw out the prediction that, you know, this game for Denver against Minnesota's trending towards the Broncos starting Jared Stidham, playing him a series or two, and then Sam Ellinger getting to play the entire remainder of the game.

Starting point is 00:01:43 And that's exactly what played out. And we even made mention of that. This is very similar to what the Broncos did in 2024 with Zach Wilson. So what happened then? Denver, at the end of that preseason game against Arizona, they kept three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. Now, while I'll say things transpired a little different that season where Zach was the emergency quarterback, he was on the roster all year long.

Starting point is 00:02:03 what could change this year, I think, is leverage from the Broncos standpoint when you look at it, right? Because I understand people's notion of saying, hey, if Bowenix goes down, you know, can Jared Stidham be the guy? I think there are things that, you know, say that Jarrett can do well if he steps in there. Now, granted, there's other things that we've got to talk about as well. For me, I do think if Jarrett Stidham had a very capable run game from the Broncos offense and an AFC championship game, if they could run the ball a little better on some short-yarded situations, I felt like the result would have been different, right? Now, I understand when you look at Jared Stidham compared to Bo Nix,

Starting point is 00:02:39 athletically, there are some limitations that Jeter has that. You know, Bow just simply has superpowers off, right? That's his mobility is one of his biggest superpowers. But Stidham knows the offense. Stidham, for the most part, can sling the football. Now you're going to get some ups and downs. It's not going to be perfect. That's the thing with every single backup quarterback.

Starting point is 00:02:57 If every backup quarterback could do what the starter did, then it'd go be a starter on some other. NFL team right now. So worst case scenario, anything happens at Bonnix. You have a backup going that. Like that's the worst case scenario for any organization, not just Denver. Sam Ellinger, I mean, he could have been, I mean, he was elevated as the backup for that game. He's brought on the 53 man roster the week of the game. So it's not like anything changed going to the AFC championship game with this situation here. So now you just have three QBs on your 53. Now, here's why I think the Broncos have leverage in the situation. Why they keep three? Because you've heard me be on the record pretty

Starting point is 00:03:30 much all throughout training camp saying, I don't think that Denver should keep three on the 53, just because I think you can dedicate roster spots to maybe some other younger players that you want to develop a little bit more, that you don't want to risk through waivers. And certainly the Broncos have proven me. And I think many people wrong on that with some young players that they waived that we thought would not get cut. We'll talk about that later. But having three quarterbacks on your roster, it gives the Broncos some leverage over some other NFL teams out there. Because as we all know, throughout the NFL season, injuries do pile up. And God forbid, and I don't want to see this happen to any other NFL team.

Starting point is 00:04:02 I think injuries are one of the worst parts of the game for anybody. And I would never, ever wish any organization goes through that. But there's an injury that pops up, right? Well, now let's say there's a team that thinks, okay, we really like Sam Ellinger. We really like Jared Stidham. The Broncos say, okay, you want them. Here's what the price tag is. Give us, we want this type of draft pick and you can have them.

Starting point is 00:04:22 We'll trade them. That's what the leverage is. That's the benefit of Denver keeping three QDU. UBs on the 53 is that one of those guys in the event and injury pops up around the league, one of those guys can get traded to another organization and the Broncos can at least receive some capital for it. Whereas if you were to release Sam Ellinger outright, he could go sign anywhere with any other team that had interest in him if he wanted to because he's a vested veteran, right? And I know a lot of people are saying, well, how come the Broncos just didn't take the same

Starting point is 00:04:48 approach with Ellinger that they did last year where they say, hey, we're going to release you, we're going to immediately sign you back to the practice squad who want to keep you here. It has a little bit more to do with money, right? when you're on the practice squad and you're not getting called up necessarily for a game day. You're not getting that game day check. You get a little bit of a game day bonus when you're on the active roster. So even if Sam is inactive this season, he's going to get paid decent money. He'll be the emergency quarterback.

Starting point is 00:05:10 But it's not the situation where you're running at risk. Like if you're on the practice squad and you're not called up, well, guess what? You're not getting an extended game bonus for that. So for Denver specifically, they just have the leverage to where a team can come to them and say, we really need a quarterback. We think that is Jared Stidham or Sam Ellinger can start for us. What do you want? This is what we're not offering here.

Starting point is 00:05:29 Initially, the Broncos can either accept or they can counter. And I think that's the only benefit right now. In my opinion, that's the only benefit to keeping three quarterbacks on the 53. I truly do believe that they could have maybe added another player at another position. They made some very interesting choices here. They kept four inside linebackers, which debatable, they kept four outside linebackers because Jonathan Cooper was placed on the commissioner's exemplar. So he doesn't count on the 53, but Denver's got Nick, Jonah,

Starting point is 00:05:55 and you've got Dandre and Q as your four outside linebackers, you could have essentially kept a fifth if you only kept two quarterbacks, right? And there's some other positions that Denver went a little more heavy at this year. They kept six wide receivers, seven defensive linemen. You can make arguments for and against all that. I just feel like three QBs is tough. There are some teams out there like the Pittsburgh Steelers that kept four QBs on their 53 men roster, which in my opinion, what a waste of a roster spot?

Starting point is 00:06:22 What are folks doing? I also think the Minnesota Vikings are another. team that did that. But to me, there's leverage out there right now in the event and injury pops up down the line. But in the meantime, the Broncos, they have guys, two guys right now in-house behind Bow Nix that know this offensive system and that have a little bit of different skill set. Jared, I think, is more of a pocket passer. And I think Sam is kind of this gunslinger, has the mobility. I think the mobility factor was a big thing that we saw from him in the preseason. Obviously, in this last slate of games here that I think played to his

Starting point is 00:06:52 advantage. They said, okay, well, if he had to step in, He has this about him. And Davis Webb, now as the play caller, was the quarterbacks coach last year, worked with these guys. There's a lot of symmetry with what these guys have talked about in the meeting rooms versus, hey, if we need this guy to step up, this is what we're going to get. This is what we can do with this guy. So I'm very curious to see how it all plays out. But once again, I must reiterate Broncos country. If any of these two other quarterbacks besides Bo Necks has to play, the Broncos, they're in trouble, right?

Starting point is 00:07:19 Bo Nix is the guy. Like, here we are. I mean, look how far we've come in the last. eight or nine years since the Broncos have had a carousel, a longer than that, 10 to 11 years with a carousel. But the last few with Bo Nix, we haven't had any questions about franchise quarterback. We've felt that Denver has their guy. We're sitting here now at this juncture debating about backup quarterbacks.

Starting point is 00:07:41 I would much rather be in this position than the position that Broncos country was in before Bo Nix arrived in the mile high city. So with that said, Broncos country, make sure you share your thoughts with me here today on lockdown Broncos of what you thought of Denver's decision to keep three quarterbacks. What do you think the benefit is of that? What is your biggest con of that when you look at them keeping three QBs? A lot of interesting sides to this as the Broncos get ready for their week one regular season game in just under three weeks against the Kansas City Chiefs. Very excited about that.

I'm so grateful to have the audience that we do here because we get to talk a lot about what's going on with your team here every day. So let's get into it here. Surprise cuts. My goodness. Nothing I would say that was kind of out of left field, so to speak. Now, maybe one move or two moves kind of qualified. I was like, wow, like I'm so surprised. I did not expect this. And that's in terms of a couple of players making the roster and a couple of players not making the roster. Let's start off with the biggest surprise first and foremost. The biggest surprise was kind of the first surprise out of the whole entire wavelength of roster cuts that

Starting point is 00:10:31 the Broncos made on Sunday. Rookie tight end, Justin Jolie out of NC State was kind of that first, wait a minute. Oh, they're waving him. And it has nothing to do with the fact that, you know, they wanted to keep, you know, and certain other, you know, archetypes at that position, right? Because I think our projection, like at least mine, I'm only going to speak for myself, was I think Denver was going to keep an N-line Y,

Starting point is 00:10:54 a backup to an N-line-Y, and the F-type move around tight end to Evan Ingram. And I felt like Justin Jolie was going to be that guy. Now, to me, I thought, hey, Jolie is going to be the type of guy who makes the 53-man roster, but he's going to be inactive for probably the first half,

Starting point is 00:11:10 maybe even a majority of the season, a game day inactive, so he can develop a little bit further. I didn't think that he was going to be one of those players that was going to be waived here. And George Payton, we got on a conference call with him after roster cuts happen. He said, you know, he's still very raw.

Starting point is 00:11:23 Like he was a raw prospect coming out of college. And he just, you know, he's a little behind. But we, you know, the plan is to get him onto the practice squad. And we want him to continue to develop with. He's going to have a good career. Now, ultimately, he's going to have to clear waivers. There could be another team out there that places a claim on him. But if that does happen, well, then Jolie will sign back onto the

Starting point is 00:11:42 Broncos practice. But that to me, fifth round pick, that was a little bit of a surprise, you know, that you don't typically see with this Broncos team any day three picks getting cut, so to speak, you know, sometimes it's usually a seventh rounder, something along those lines versus it being, you know, a fifth round pick. So that was where I was kind of surprised. And then Mr. Irrelevant. After the Lovell Bailey injury, Murdoch was getting more snaps defensively throughout the course of practice. Now, obviously, Jordan Turner came back from his injury that was bothering him early on that caused him to miss, I think the first two weeks of camp. but Red Murdoch got a lot of reps and I felt like there were some flashes in some of the

Starting point is 00:12:16 preseason games. And then of course in the last preseason game, he does his famous force fumble where he punches the ball out. He did not make it. I was surprised at that considering just where Denver's linebacker room was. And I feel like we have to have another episode on that to really kind of talk about maybe some of the concerns that we have about Denver's 53 at certain positions. And I think linebacker is arguably one of the bigger concerns right now when you talk about the, you know, the inexperience there behind your two starters that you have. That to me is a I think a subject for tomorrow's podcast that Sarah and myself will both sit down and do. But Red Murdoch was a surprise to me.

Starting point is 00:12:48 I had him being the next guy. I had him at least being the third or the fourth guy. Instead, it is Karen A. Reid and Jordan Turner that are the two linebackers behind Justin Sternad and Alex Singleton. That was a surprise in terms of cuts. I would even say maybe even Jolil McLaughlin getting cut and Wade was a little bit of a surprise to me. I felt like Jolil is a Sean Payton guy.

Starting point is 00:13:09 And I understand like Jolil is kind of a polarizing figure and Broncos country. I think, you know, a large portion of the fan base, at least the instant reaction I got when, you know, I shared the screenshot of Jolil announcing that he was saying farewell to Denver. A majority of the fan base, I had like 15 plus responses to that where I would say 14 of them were this is a bad move. Jolil is important to what Denver does. And look, I think Jolilil certainly is. But how the Broncos made this decision ultimately factored into special teams and pass protection. I think Jolilip Loflin has gotten much better in the last two years at pass pro. He added on five to six pounds of muscle mass in the offseason.

Starting point is 00:13:44 I think what it really boiled down to here, especially with Denver keeping four running backs is special teams. And Tyler Badegh over Jalil, at least in special teams, is more established and is more of an impact ready to make contributor there comparison to Jalil. Now Bade is probably going to be one of the kick returners for the Broncos this upcoming season, one of the other ones.

Starting point is 00:14:03 And I'm sure Marvin's going to be the own. I would like to see Marvin taking off a kick return. That's another show for another day. But to me, Jalil being cut was a little bit of a surprise. I figured it was either going to be Jalil or Cody Schrader making it as that fourth if Denver carried forth because we already know the three guys are already solidified in JK, RJ, and rookie Jonah Coleman, who impressed quite a bit. So to me, that was a little bit of a surprise. But the other surprise also came into that end position as well because Justin Jolie doesn't make it.

Starting point is 00:14:31 And granted, I think we all saw Jolie was a little bit of a raw prospect. Dallin Bentley, seventh round pick, goes right before Red Murdoch, one pick away from Mr. relevant. Dalin Bentley makes the 53-man roster here for Denver and he's their fourth tight end. Now, the way I'm looking at it and maybe trying to understand it from George Payton, Sean Peyton's perspective, it has nothing to

Starting point is 00:14:52 do with what we saw in the receiving department. Now, I think in practice, I'll say this, Bentley I felt like was pretty underrated. Didn't see a lot of instances where he generated a ton of targets in the passing game during practice throughout training camp. We didn't really see much in terms of the passing game involvement in the preseason,

Starting point is 00:15:08 but I felt like Bentley blocked well and what I've seen at training camp. I think he's done a really good job of sealing certain guys when Denver's trying to get on their outside run plays. At times, we have to kick a guy out. I think he's done a really good job there. My biggest critique, and I don't know if this was by design of what the Broncos' offense was having these guys do

Starting point is 00:15:24 because we see the same thing with Adam Troutman. You don't see Adam Troutman typically going out there and just running a rep from the onset in terms of running a route. You see him chip, you know, chip a defensive guy, then release for a route or as a checkdown option. But you never see anything in terms of route usage, primarily off of, you know, the inline-wide position. It's usually a chip and then a checkdown route.

Starting point is 00:15:44 But to me, I look at Dalton Bentley. Okay, he's got the athleticism. He's got a very similar athletic profile to Adam Troutman. This is a guy that they feel like, hey, this is one of our better blockers. They think that's going to be important. And maybe this guy can play special teams. But I have a feeling that Dalin Bentley will be a game day inactive unless he can prove to Darren Rizzy, he can be a core four special teams guy and play on every phase of kick, kick return,

Starting point is 00:16:09 punt, punt return coverage, whatever you may have, that he could be on those units. Then I say, okay, well, he'll probably be an active guy on game day. But right now I think it's trending towards inactive. I'm wondering what it is about him specifically. And I'm curious, maybe we'll get this from Sean Payton. Maybe I'll ask him this question here today after practice. What was it about Bentley that stood out in comparison to maybe some of the other guys

Starting point is 00:16:31 like Lucas Crowell who was released or rookie Justin Jolie? That I think would be a very interesting answer to hear. but more of an opportunity for these guys to develop. Those were really the big surprises here of the Broncos roster building. I would even say maybe a surprise make was veteran offensive tackle Matt Parrott. I felt like Matt Parrott vested veteran. You could have easily released him, had him signed to the practice squad and then used the elevations. He actually made it on the offensive line.

Starting point is 00:16:59 And I think that's because Frank Crum landed on IR, right? He was one of those short-term IR recall guys that after four games, he can come back. And then the Broncos have to make a corresponding. which I imagine Perr might be that corresponding move whenever Frank Crumb is ready to come back when they activate his 21-day window. But that's not going to be for a while, folks. Don't even count on that. To me, that was a little bit of a surprise. And then the Broncos, not only waving Luke Basso, the undrafted rookie free agent long snapper,

Starting point is 00:17:24 but releasing Mitchell Forbony, the current starting long snapper. And the only reason why, and they did this is because they're using the vested veteran approach. Now, ultimately, I don't know, maybe for the first six weeks, the Broncos might mess around a little bit, right? Because they get three practice squad to game day elevations for Forbony. If you have Luke Basso on your practice squad as well, now you get three elevations with him. In the first six weeks of the season, are we going to see a scenario where the Broncos give three games to Fiboni, three games to Basso? That would be very interesting. But to me, they have two long snappers on the practice squad.

Starting point is 00:18:03 I don't know how long that's going to last, but to me that was a little bit of a surprise when we look at this roster and everything else. I feel like everything else kind of played out the way that we may be anticipated outside of tight end. I would even say it linebacker and some of these other positions like long snapper. These are the problems that we're having that long snapper. Like you talk about roster continuity.

Starting point is 00:18:22 When Denver's making these 53-man roster cuts, one of the bigger challenges with it is figuring out, with all this roster continuity, what do you do? Well, Haley Waddle made it. Tyson Anderson made it. I've got a very interesting theory on Tyson Anderson that maybe I'll share in tomorrow's episode when I sit down with Sarah. And then you've got your handful of other rookies that made it this year. Those really are the new faces that made your 53 men roster.

Starting point is 00:18:44 Everybody else is back from last year for the most part. So to me, that's where I think maybe we look at this 53 men roster cut a little bit differently in comparison to years past because we're used to a little bit of wholesale changes in certain positions. But really, there's not much. Not much here in this year's round of cuts here. So Broncos Country, please let me know. know what your surprise cuts were in your opinion. He was very clear here for the Denver Broncos this past week. J.K. Dobbins, R.J. Harvey and Jonah Coleman, right? Even though Jonah Coleman's a rookie, he was out in the pregame.

Starting point is 00:21:51 If you're not going to play in this game, workout group that featured pretty much every key starter you could think of for the Broncos and a couple of key role players. That's where we saw Jonah Coleman. No surprise. Sean Payton has talked him up. I mean, really early on in training camp, Sean was asked a specific question about, is there anybody out here? Is there anything that has surprised you? And Sean typically doesn't give us stuff like this, but he was in a good mood that day. I don't know if that five-year contract extension kind of helped open things up a little bit, but we'll take it. He said, the rookie, the rookie running back. And he says with him, you don't

Starting point is 00:22:22 feel a rookie, which, I mean, I feel like we've heard that with Sean with several players for him. This guy doesn't feel like a rookie. This guy doesn't feel like a first year, second year player. Jonah Coleman has lived up to the hype. I've seen it in practice. I've seen it in the preseason games. The Broncos saw enough to say, you know what, this guy, we're going to bring him into the mix. He's going to have big plans for us.

Starting point is 00:22:40 Now, this is kind of ironic because Tyler Badey is taken over as that fourth running back, whereas last year, it was J.K. Dobbins, R.J. Harvey, Tyler Badegh and Julloughlin as the Broncos four backs on the 53. This year, it's different. The rookie Jonah Coleman comes in and takes Tyler Bade's role as that third down two-minute back because of the past protection skills as well. well kind of upends a Badei's role. Badee comes in and kind of upends and takes Jalilil McLaughlin's role from last year.

Starting point is 00:23:06 However, I must remind a lot of folks, Jalilil last year when he was that fourth back on the roster, he was a game day and active. Devere activated only three guys on game day. So for me, I'm looking at this Broncos roster dilemma here, at least early on in the season. Are the Broncos going to keep four running backs on the game day active roster? Because Tyler Bade, if he's going to be returning kicks and because the Broncos really like him on special teams. He's not going to see as much time, at least in my opinion, I think, our projection right now, he's not going to see a lot of time on the offensive side of the

Starting point is 00:23:35 ball unless an injury pops up. Now, if he's active on game, it gives the Broncos flexibility in case the guy gets banged up throughout the course of the game. Then, you know, you got a guy who can also step into that situation. I like that about Badee. But you are taking a little bit more of a gamble here in terms of, okay, you're losing a guy who I think the Broncos felt like in Jalil was a little bit of a more pure runner, a comparison to Biday, who Bade, we've seen flashes from him. I think he's ran. well in preseason games. He had that 45-yard run against Tampa Bay just a couple of years ago in Bo's rookie season,

Starting point is 00:24:03 but we haven't seen it since then and the action he's been on the field. I mean, to the point where I think the Broncos gave him one carry, I think that was week 18 against the Chargers last year. Aside from any time he's been in, he's been a pass catching option or he's a decoy in the past game, right? But everybody knew when number 20 was coming in, hey, this is a passing situation. I think Jonah Coleman's role is a lot different where Jonah can come in in a passing situation. but Jonah's also going to be a guy who's going to run the dang ball.

Starting point is 00:24:30 That's what the Broncos, I think, like from him. So not only is Jonah so far in practice and early on throughout this entire time here in Denver, not only has Jonah showcased that he can be an effective runner, an effective guy in pass pro, but can be an underrated guy out of the back field as a pass catcher and is going to place in special teams, no-brainer, no-brainer that Jonah Coleman is going to step into that role, whereas I think the role archetype stuff is going to be a little different. JK's going to be your primary guy, and a lot of people say, okay, well, maybe Jonah's going to be that third runner in terms of.

Starting point is 00:24:57 that I think I think RJ is going to run the ball some. I don't think he's going to run it as much as he did last year, but he's going to touch the ball when he's in there, whether it be in the passing game or in the run game. But I think if you're looking for two primary ball carriers, to me, it's a no-brainer. It's JK and it's Jonah here specifically. And so you have maybe those archetypes where RJ and Badee, maybe they could be a little bit more of your solidified pass catching threats. So once again, you're probably not going to run as much with Badee.

Starting point is 00:25:24 If he has to see time on the field, you are going to run the ball a lot. with Jonas. So while I was a little surprised that Jalil was the guy they moved on from, I was also kind of aiming towards, okay, are the Broncos, are they going to move on from Biday? And are they going to keep either Jalilil or Cody Schrader? Is that going to be what that last spot boils down to? Strader came off a hell of a game this past Friday against Minnesota, where he had over 100 yards all purpose. But once again, in the preseason, in that game against a lot of guys that normally aren't even going to be on an active roster somewhere in the NFL, unless there's an injury. That was against a lot of practice squad guys.

Starting point is 00:25:57 you like what you saw from the performance, can he do that in a regular season game? I think it was a bigger question. Now, the thing is with Cody's a little different because the Broncos have intentions to bring him back on the practice squad. You usually typically carry another running back on your practice squad just for more flexibility. And you can elevate him three times. Once again, that's where the roster rule changes since COVID had been a really big benefit to NFL teams. And teams know how to use it the right way. And I think the Broncos are a great example of a team that if they can find any way to maximize flexibly.

Starting point is 00:26:27 flexibility with their practice squad being an extension of their 53. Denver's been probably one of those teams. And typically, as the season goes on, injuries do pile up. And that stuff kind of naturally works itself out to where a guy goes on IR. And then you bring someone from your practice squad up to your active roster as kind of a corresponding move. And then you can play the gymnastics. If that one player that went on IR can come back, then, you know, you look at other

Starting point is 00:26:49 positions. It's just a revolving door of different decisions that teams have the flexibility to make. But running back to me did feel like it was a little interesting. my biggest question now with this, and I'm curious for your thoughts, Broncos Country. Tyler Badegh, is he a game day and active, or is he going to be active? And the Broncos going to keep four backs active on Sundays when they play or the first game, a Monday night football matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. Broncos, let me know your thoughts on the initial 53-man roster here for your Denver Broncos.
