Now, as we predict how many defensive linemen, the Broncos will carry on their 53-man roster this year, this might be the type of season that Denver goes a little bit heavier compared to years past. We'll also highlight which players are battling for spots on the active roster. We're going to go through and preview some of the biggest storylines here with this defensive line group is the departure of BT Jordan as big as maybe some people think. And can the Broncos, led by Zach Allen and Malcolm Rush, can they find a way to break that Chicago Bears

Starting point is 00:01:09 sack record of 72 sacks back in 1984? A lot to break down, Sarah. The defensive line group is fun. I think when you look at the overall personalities in that room, the talent. And I would say even the development of where this room has gone in the last couple of years, this has been one of the Broncos' biggest strength, it's been in the trenches with this defensive line group specifically. That's what Sean Payton said when he got to this team, right?

Starting point is 00:01:33 is and what we talked about when we saw the emphasis on the offensive and defensive lines in free agency is really like, hey, if you can upgrade in the trenches, you can raise the floor of your team. I know Sean says that the offensive line kind of is what permeates the building, but I feel like the defensive line, Cody, has sort of been the team's calling card over the last handful of years and just the way that they develop players, the way that they've put guys in positions for success, the number of second contract players that they've gotten. I mean, I think we start with the question, though, as we get to training camp is, how do you replace John Franklin Myers, right?

Starting point is 00:02:09 Because as good as Zach Allen has been, Malcolm Roach, DJ Jones, the talent elsewhere in the depth department. John Franklin Myers was a substantial pickup for this team. I know we watched the 2024 NFL draft basically together, and we were sitting there kind of feeling like, it just feels incomplete, you know, it didn't feel, it didn't feel like they were able, even after getting Bo Nix in the first round, Troy, Franklin, Jonah Ellis, all these guys. It felt like they were missing that one piece. And then bam, they trade for John Franklin Myers.

Starting point is 00:02:38 And we're like, okay, this is like the most complete draft that you could possibly have. You've added starters all over the place. And so JFM gives you 14 and a half sacks in two seasons. He's obviously kind of the Robin to Zach Allen's Batman. And now he's gone. And you've got to replace him. So that is a very important question. Maybe the biggest one that the Broncos have to answer now going into training camp.

Starting point is 00:03:02 is what does the replacement plan for JFM look like? And I think that's where you go to the Broncos. Obviously, they invested last year in the NFL draft and getting Savion Jones. That was kind of one of those out of nowhere type of picks for Denver because we were going through and it was, what was it? The end of round three and we were getting ready to record just our draft recap. And then all of a sudden Denver's back on the clock and they take Savion. We're like, wait a minute. Why are they taking Savian?

Starting point is 00:03:27 And initially they said Savian was an edge rusher and then come to find out, No, that's not what the vision was for him, at least in this defense here in Denver specifically. So that was that he had a red shirt season last year. He saw some limited action, but not enough for us to go through and say, hey, all right, this guy, it makes it easier for them to move on from JFM. I think, if anything, we were looking at how JFM performed and everybody else around him, just besides Zach Allen, we're like, you can't let JFM walk. Unfortunately, they did.

Starting point is 00:03:58 They didn't even have conversations with his agents. So Savion Jones is going to factor into that equation a little bit. And also this year in the NFL draft, you go out and you get Tyler Ongedem who can really play anywhere. It can play everywhere on the defensive line, whether you want it to be against an offensive tackle and a five technique. You want to be inside shade and a four eye. You want to be a three technique, a two eye, a one. He can do all that stuff. But here's where things are at.

Starting point is 00:04:22 Like what does the consistency factor look like for a guy who's primarily going to play the five technique and the three technique? Well, we don't necessarily know what that's going to look like with Savian. We don't know what that's going to look like with One Yetam, but I think based on their positioning, it almost kind of feels like they're going to double dip with that. But I also can't help but think with one thing. I was on vacation last week, a Long Beach Island when the Seth Wicker Champ piece at ESPN ran out.

Starting point is 00:04:45 And the first thing that's being described in there was Sean Payton being pissed off that Jordan Jackson was not playing, was not getting on the field, especially to stop the run. Can Jordan Jackson maybe be this little bit of a wild card that everyone's talking Savian, they're talking on Yetam. But maybe Jordan Jackson could be in line to be that guy opposite of Zach Allen. I thought the exact same thing when I was reading that, Cody, that maybe Jordan Jackson becomes this sort of dark horse candidate as we get into the

Starting point is 00:05:12 discussion of what are these position battles to watch for, things like that. But it ultimately just serves as a symbol, like the depth of this defensive line, the development that's going on even behind the scenes is so significant for this Denver for Broncos team. This is where I think they're better than pretty much anybody else in the NFL. And it's a big reason why I know we have it on our storylines that the loss of BT Jordan, the pass rush whisperer who's now on the staff with Christian Parker over there in Dallas. I think that BT Jordan's loss is a big one. But at the same time, Jamar Kane, he does a tremendous job with these guys as well. We've seen how many, how many players have come to Denver and played

Starting point is 00:05:55 their best football. I mean, Zach Allen is a great example of that, going from Arizona for four years and then coming to Denver, where a lot of folks weren't even sure he was a better option than Draymont Jones, who has since switched positions and is now playing off the edge for the Patriots. I mean,

Starting point is 00:06:11 you have Malcolm Roach, who played good for New Orleans. He's been even better for the Denver Broncos. John Franklin Myers, another great example. Even though he was a model of consistency before coming to Denver, he played his best football, DJ Jones.

Starting point is 00:06:25 He's gotten two contracts from the Broncos already. In Yoma Oazerike, he's developed under this coaching staff. So that's what gives me a ton of confidence about players like Savian Jones, Tyler O'Neatham, even Jordan Jackson. But they also didn't give up on Matt Henningson either. They brought him back for another one-year deal. It's just a, this is one of the most fun position groups on the team because it feels like every layer that you pull,

Starting point is 00:06:50 you got another reason to be optimistic. Well, and you also have the best, combination of personalities, I would say, like this defensive line room right here might be the funniest alongside the defensive backs, like the corners room. When you talk about just the personalities, the jawing, just the funniness behind it, it really permeates throughout the building. And one thing that even, you know, Sean Payton says for JK is like, you hear him before you see him, he says the same exact thing for Malcolm Roach. And I can tell you just being around Malcolm and watching he and Marvin Mims had this friendly little banter that they always have. Like Malcolm has such a great

Starting point is 00:07:24 personality and even he has almost kind of expanded on really kind of some OTA mandatory minicamp interviews that he's going to have an expanded role this upcoming season. So what might that look like here, Sarah, is there this vision to potentially get him some reps where maybe in JFM was playing in certain spots? I like what Denver does with DJ and Malcolm because, you know, when DJ's on the field, Malcolm's fresh. When DJ has to come off, Malcolm's coming in fresh, DJ gets a breeder and then DJ comes back in fresh. Like they do a really good job of supplementing each other at that position, but it doesn't have to be specifically a defensive tackle or nose tackle. You can also spread these guys out. I think Malcolm can also play a little

Starting point is 00:08:04 bit more defensive end. So maybe it is going to be Malcolm in mind here. Could this scenario change here, Sarah, and this is something we can talk about coming up here in a minute where maybe it is Malcolm Road starting a defensive end opposite of Zach Allen, DJ Jones starting at the defensive tackle position. But then that's where Tyler Ognettam, I'm Yoma, Uwazareke with their ability to play kind of anywhere here, D&D tackle, those guys are now spelling Malcolm and spelling DJ and vice versa. That could be an interesting wrinkle that the Broncos could throw into here. We don't know the answer to this question just yet,

Starting point is 00:08:35 but it is one that I hope we get an answer to very soon because Denver has a lot of flexibility at this position specifically. And there are a handful of different position battles we envision that are probably taking place. We'll highlight which ones those are here on today's episode of the show. Brock goes country. Starting point is 00:09:48 edge of the Broncos have enviable depth on their defensive line, which is going to create for some really juicy position battles here as we get into the thick of training camp when the pads come on. Man, Cody, that's when this is going to really heat up. These guys are going to test that number one ranked O line. They're going to test each other and they're going to make life a lot easier for the guys behind them in the secondary. We're going to break down some position battles to watch for.

Starting point is 00:10:11 We're also going to do the impossible on today's episode of the show. We're going to try to predict who's going to make this team. I mean, coming out of training camp, it's going to be a tough one, Broncos country. Raster spots hard to come by for this Broncos team. But that's the best kind of problem to have. And as we get into training camp, we want to say thank you to everyone out there that makes Lockdown Broncos, your first listen of the day. Starting point is 00:10:35 listening to the show and just hanging out with us, talking Denver Broncos football with us. We can't wait to see these defensive linemen on the field, Cody. I think that ultimately, yes, the JFM loss is the best. biggest on paper of the offseason, certainly. When you talk about his production, you talk about his impact. At the end of the day, I don't want to diminish that by any means, but I will say this. He wasn't playing even 50% of the snaps last year, close to 50, but not even 50. So we know that this is a by committee approach.

Starting point is 00:11:05 And we've seen the Broncos take bigger risks, I would say, in terms of letting guys go and finding replacement options from their in-house development program. So that gives me confidence, right? I mean, there may be times that this season we're saying, hey, replacing JFM, that was a little bit too big of a task for the Broncos to do in one off season, even with a bunch of bodies. But it's that bunch of bodies that's, I mean, that's what we're excited to see going into camp right here. And that's where these position battles really begin. Yeah. And I would say right now, if we were to look at this roster, maybe what is the biggest position battle we're going to have our eye on here?

Starting point is 00:11:40 I mean, I think first and foremost, I think there's multiple guys fighting for one spot. Let's say Inyo Owasarike versus Savian Jones versus Tyler O'Neum versus Matt Henningson. I think you want to factor him into the equation. And obviously, Jordan Jackson, I think there are multiple guys fighting for one or two spots here at this point. I think when we talk about evident roster locks, what? Zach Allen, DJ Jones, Malcolm Roach. I think Enioma is a roster lock. And I also think Oñettam's a roster lock here.

Starting point is 00:12:10 But the biggest question is, is what do the Broncos envision in terms of, of this defensive line group this year. You mentioned it replacing JFM's going to be tough. And the fact that he didn't play 50% of the snaps, and he still had the production that he did, the pressures, the quarterback hits. That just makes what he did even more impressive. And I also think it kind of raises a little bit of pressure on some of these other guys saying,

Starting point is 00:12:30 hey, if you're going to be getting these snaps where JFM was last year, you got to do something. You got to produce. And there's going to be opportunities. We know, Zach Allen's going to command double teams in certain situations. That leaves one-on-ones on the outside for the pass rushers. That's also going to leave some one-on-one. and one opportunities across the board for the other guys in the defensive line.

Starting point is 00:12:49 That's where things have to kind of make themselves a little bit more, I would say, clear when we talk about the preseason. Is there going to be a guy here out of this group of players, Oneedem, the rookie, Savion, the second year player, essentially kind of a red shirt freshman if we were going to talk about it in college football terms here. And then Jordan Jackson, who Sean Payton really, really wanted to have playing time in the playoffs. To me, I think that's where we're going to be keeping our eyes on.

Starting point is 00:13:15 here in training camp is a position battle between these guys. I'm going to be paying attention to them specifically in my handy-dandy little notebook. I'm going to be making notes every single day when Denver's in their first, team, second team, and third team defensive units who's standing out here in the trenches. That's going to be a huge focus for me. But I would say the main spots that are up for grabs are really between those guys. I think it makes it a lot harder for other guys like Jordan Miller, who's been on this team as a practice squad player for the last handful of years.

Starting point is 00:13:42 And obviously Christian Williams, who is also a nose tag. I think it just makes it a lot more difficult for those other guys that are kind of on the back end to make a case for themselves here. But then again, stranger things have happened. And knock on wood, please no injuries to this room or any position at that matter here for the Broncos and training camp. Absolutely. Because you want to see that competition truly fleshed out. You don't want guys to sort of be eliminated in that way, right? You don't want the missing practices and then saying, well, it was kind of just this guy was the only guy who was out there every day.

Starting point is 00:14:13 right so you don't want that to happen i think what i'm excited most to see cody is these guys going up against what i believe to be the best guard duo in the nfl i mean you get opportunities to rotate in with that number one defense that's how you figure out that's how you sort out a position battle right is to say what does savion jones look like with our first team defense what is you know uh tyler own yet um all these guys insert name here look like with our number one defense How does he play off of Zach Allen? How does he play off of Malcolm Roach, DJ Jones? How does he do going up against Quinn Miners one-on-one?

Starting point is 00:14:49 How does he react to Ben Powers on one side? These two veteran offensive guards who they know what they're doing out there. And they're going to be out, I think for some blood here. You know, they've been anointed as with the number one offensive line in the NFL by many, but also they've been criticized for being a little bit soft in the postseason and not good enough in the run game. So I think they're going to be out for some. blood. They're going to smell that blood in the water and they're going to take it out on these young defensive linemen and make life tough for them during camp. That's what I want to see. I want those guys

Starting point is 00:15:20 that the biggest test possible throughout the course of training camp going up against these interior linemen and really getting tested, really being refined and pruned every single day at practice to say, no, no, no, that's not going to work against the best guards in the NFL. Like, that might have worked when you were at college. It might have worked when you were going up against, you know, some guy who's not going to be playing in the NFL this year or next year or ever, but it's not going to work against me. It's not going to work against guys who are almost as good as me either. So that's what I'm the most excited for.

Starting point is 00:15:52 And maybe that's what's really helped, honestly, in maybe an underrated way in recent years for these defensive linemen developing in this program. And I think maybe even a wild card to watch too, especially like the Broncos, if you look at their roster right now, right, on their website, everybody's kind of listed as a, you know, there are a couple of guys listed as,

Starting point is 00:16:11 D-Ns. Everyone's listed as a D-Lignment, which means I think those guys with the DL designation are kind of envisioned to play a little bit anywhere and everywhere. And then there's nose tackle. Jordan Miller has kind of been developing a little bit at the nose tackle position. And I felt like last year, Sarah, he had an incredible preseason to the point I even thought to myself and said, you know, he played so well. He tackles for a loss, meeting guys in the A gap, creating backfield penetration and shutting down, you know, the stretch game that some teams are trying to run. You know, they're facing a lot of these Shanahan-style offenses last season.

Starting point is 00:16:47 Well, guess what? He did really good as a true nose tackle, where he's playing in a one technique or he's playing in a zero, which means he's head up in the middle of the center on the crown of the helmet there. Usually in situations like that, they want to use that player in the A gap to attack and hopefully draw an offensive guard there. That way, if they can focus and if he can anchor down and not get pushed back, well, guess what? Now you've got your other guys that are swarming.

Starting point is 00:17:12 It makes your linebackers jobs a lot easier. DJ is kind of that hybrid nose tackle D.N type of player that can play a little bit anywhere and everywhere. I don't think DJ's role necessarily is excelling in a five technique. But I think if you want to look at him in a four, I think you want to look at him in a three technique and inside a two, a two eye and a one technique, that's where DJ's at. But Jordan is the type of guy that I think when you're playing a team that loves to run the football, If he can stand out once again for another preseason, Sarah, I think that you can make a case that, hey, we can find a spot for him on this active roster because when we have to face a team that has a very, very good rushing attack or more importantly, they go more heavy personnel with more tight ends.

Starting point is 00:17:55 We need to be able to anchor in the A gap right there because that's going to make everybody else's job a lot easier on the defensive side of ball. Jordan Miller is going to be a little bit of a wild card that I think we should keep an eye on here with this team going into training camp. But coming up next Broncos country, Sarah and I, we're going to get to the fun part. We're going to predict how many players Deverek keeps on the defensive line. Could they keep six? Could they keep seven? Could they even keep eight? We'll go through all that and much more here on today's episode of the show.

Starting point is 00:18:27 One of the more common themes here for the Debra Broncos roster going into training camp is that they seem to be loaded at a lot of positions. And the defensive line is not excluded from that. They are loaded with guys who are impact contributors, but guys who have high upside potential inside of Vance Joe. Joseph's defense. Sarah and I are going to project here and predict how many players Denver will end up keeping when it comes to the 53 men roster ahead of the regular season here. This is going to be fun, Sarah, because right now coming into training camp, the Broncos, they've got 10 guys on the defensive line roster. And we all know who's headlining that. Zach Allen, Malcolm Roach, DJ Jones. Those are your top three big dogs.

Starting point is 00:19:04 But then you got, I'd say, I know Mozariki, who's kind of earned a little bit of a bigger role. Savion Jones entering his second year in the NFL, rookie title. other own yet them. There are six guys right there that I think we can look and say, are they locks? I want to get your, is this a yes or no for you? Are those guys that I just mentioned are those six roster locks to you?

Starting point is 00:19:25 And ultimately, how many players do they keep? And if they keep more than six, who are the other guys that you've got on your list? I think in an ideal world, those guys are the top six guys who end up making this team and making it easy for the Broncos to make that decision. Right.

Starting point is 00:19:40 Ultimately, them, Jordan Miller, Matt Henningson, Jordan Jackson, Christian Williams. And you want those guys to make it difficult for them to only keep six, right? You want those guys to make enough plays where they have to say, all right, do we keep six or do we keep seven? Like you said, I think that's the real question here is, okay, do we need to keep Jordan Jackson because of the run defense comment that Sean Payton made? Like, is he really that good against the run and better than these young guys, own yet him, Savion Jones? Is he going to help us? That's where I wonder, is it going to be six or seven?

Starting point is 00:20:15 Because the six guys that you have there, there's two guys that you spent third round picks on. You traded up to get Savian Jones. I know it was after pick 100, just after pick 100, I think. But you also used pick 67 on Tyler Ognettam. You've re-signed Malcolm Roach. You've re-signed DJ Jones. Zach Allen is on a big money contract. You've stuck with Inoma Uwazurike, and he played more snaf.

Starting point is 00:20:41 than most of the other guys last season. So that's where I say that top six, I think, is the ideal group of six to be confident in, if you're the Broncos, to say we're going into the year, we're confident in Savian, we're confident in Oneedem, and their ability to contribute over the course of the season at a high level. We don't feel like we need a fail safe. We don't feel like we need a break glass in case of emergency.

Starting point is 00:21:03 But that's where I think Matt Henningson and Jordan Jackson come into play here, is that those guys are sort of your break glass in case of emergency. They've played a little bit. They've taken their lumps. I mean, Jordan Jackson obviously is regarded as a good run defender by the head coach of the team. So maybe that's where you complicate the formula just a little bit. But we've talked about it. Roster spots for this team are borderline impossible to come by.

Starting point is 00:21:27 Man, it's tough because once again, we get into the whole numbers conversation here. And if I'm not mistaken, we've got 11 defensive backs between the corners and the safeties here on this roster. We've got five inside line backers. So that puts you at, if I'm not mistaken, my math here as I look at it, you're at 16 players right now. Outside linebacker, let's project that they keep five guys at that position right there. Okay, well, now you're at 21 players. Well, now you're in a scenario here where you have to figure out, okay, how many defensive linemen are we going to carry on this roster, right?

Starting point is 00:21:59 We're at 21 right now. If you keep six, then you're at 27. You keep seven. You're at 28 total players allocated to the defensive side of the ball on a 53-man roster. kind of seems very hard, right? What, how many quarterbacks? We're going to, I think we both carry two. Two, yeah.

Starting point is 00:22:16 And running backs, I think we carried four guys on the 53. Wide receiver, we're carrying five. Tight end, we're carrying four. And then now that leads you to the offensive line where, you know, you got your starting five. You've got Paucheski, crumb, as the other backup guys behind them. And then KC, there's eight. Orscyth. Orcite, there's nine.

Starting point is 00:22:40 So the numbers game, I think, makes it hard to keep more than six guys here, six guys. And that's going to be tough. But then once again, that's going to mean you're allocating some practice squad spots to some of these guys. So for me, I think it is going to be six guys here that Denver ultimately keeps. I think it's going to be Zach Allen, DJ Jones, Malcolm Roach, Injoumo, Uazareke, Savion Jones, and rookie Tyler Onyrdum, while you have guys like Jordan Miller, Matt Henningson, Jordan Jackson on the practice. the squad here for your team.

Starting point is 00:23:09 That's kind of where I'm going here on the 53. It's tough because then I feel like you could make a case for Jordan Jackson, considering what Sean Payton said. Maybe Matt Hanickson coming off the Achilles if he has a strong preseason. You know, maybe he makes a case. Jordan Miller, we just talked about him a nose tackle. If he goes through and makes a case for himself, that's the problem that you run into with this Broncos roster

Starting point is 00:23:30 because they are so loaded at a lot of key positions where you are going to lose some quality guys either to other teams. or you're going to bring them onto your practice squad. There's no perfect utopia, I think, for where Denver's at right now. And this is a good problem to have for them. But it also makes it tough because I think you can make a case for three or four guys at several positions across the board defensively and offensively that we don't even have making a 53. Well, and there's the double-edged sword as well of having friends in high places elsewhere in the NFL, right?

Starting point is 00:24:02 And there's the positive of that is, okay, well, you know, the, the New York Jets are what second in the waiver priority and Darren Mojee is the general manager there and Aaron Glenn is the head coach and he comes from the Sean Peyton tree. So those guys are going to be like bolchers circling, you know, the deer on the side of the road when the Broncos have to make roster cuts. The jets are going to be all over it. The bills, the Cowboys with BT Jordan on their staff and Christian Parker as their defensive coordinator now.

Starting point is 00:24:33 Obviously, Fangio still has ties to some of these guys. I think that there's no sure. Yeah, the bills, like you said, with Jim Leonard now, that's a connection that's easy to forget as well. But at the top of the waiver order, the Tennessee, and not the Tennessee Titans, but I mean, teams like that, right? The Raiders, do want to steal from a division rival, the jets, they have the connections.

Starting point is 00:24:54 The Titans and Mike Borganzi have, I mean, they've had multiple Broncos in the building. So I think that you're looking at a situation here on the defensive line, but also big picture with this roster, as you kind of just outlined a number of, positions where you have leverage to say if we cut this guy and he hits waivers, you are now saying, okay, we're fine not getting him because Darren Moody's going to take him.

Starting point is 00:25:19 Yeah. So that gives you leverage in a trade to say, hey, if you want this guy and you want him on your 53, you're going to have to give us draft picks or like we talked about in the edge rusher episode, like we'll do a little player for player something, something. you give us an edge guy and we give you a D-Linman. How about even in Dallas, you know, this, I think Sam Williams, as a former second round pick, he's been kind of injured, you know, flashed, but not really played a whole lot, special teams guy,

Starting point is 00:25:50 got the upside off the pass rush. That might be a situation there where you're saying, hey, you're giving up on this guy. We'll take him off your hands and we'll give you Jordan Jackson or something. You know, I'm not saying it's a one for one necessarily, but you kind of get the gears turning and. say, I could see other teams looking at the situation and saying, we'll give you a little something for this guy. So the Jets or the Titans or the Raiders don't get him. Yeah. So like the bills,

Starting point is 00:26:17 you do have Joe Brady, who used to be on Sean Payton staff. Obviously, Sean had conversations with Joe to be the O.C. in Denver at some point, there were conversations about that. I think around the NFL Combine, if I'm not mistaken. Pete Carmichael's now over there as, you know, a key offensive assistant. He was obviously a senior offensive personnel assistant for Denver last year. And then even like Joe Lombardi and Declan Doyle in Baltimore right now. I mean, these, you have to really pay attention because of what people have been plucking from Denver's front office, they're also plucking guys from the coaching staff, guys that have been obviously let go. You got to pay attention to all these ties here as this portion of the offseason kind

Starting point is 00:26:54 of comes around, the preseason, once you get to roster cuts. And I even think when you look at even the trade deadline going into the regular season is like, what does that look like? What are some of these other teams eyeing? And I think those relationships help you make deals. Even if you have to play those teams that year, I don't think that's something that, you know, you necessarily worry about. I think the one caveat, I think that would prohibit them from doing something like that would be trading with the division rival. I don't think that Denver would do that.

Starting point is 00:27:22 But then again, strange things have happened around the NFL. But the defensive line room here for Denver, they're going to have some really good guys that probably aren't going to make the active roster. Can they keep them around the practice squad? That's going to be a big question here for the Broncos coming into training camp. obviously the preseason and into the regular season. We'll have you covered every step off the way. Broncos country next week, rookies are going to report for training camp on the 22nd.
