In Broncos country, the NFL draft was ongoing on Friday. You're getting a little bonus episode here today on day two of the draft. The Broncos having picks in round two and round number three, adding to the offensive side of the ball. We'll go through on today's episode show and talk about R.J. Harvey,
Starting point is 00:01:24 the Broncos, newest edition from Central Florida, what he's going to bring to the table for Sean Peyton and the Broncos' offense. And we're going to dive into Pat Bright, the Broncos third round edition at the wide receiver. position. Does this put anybody's roster status in question or is this a valuable depth option that could have an impact this year, potentially even next year? We'll break all that down on today's episode of the show. Sarah, look, man, it's been a wild 48 hours in Broncos country. I feel like you look on social media. It's a roller coaster of emotions.
Starting point is 00:01:53 We broke down the shocking pick of Judea Barron. Obviously on day one of the NFL draft, Broncos is getting a premium level, elite level athletic position there at the cornerback position inside, outside. We broke that down. You want to go check that out locked on Broncos. But day two, I think everyone was wondering, what are the Broncos going to do? Are they going to add to the offensive side of the ball? Well, that was their focus on day number two. Yeah, it was. And they selected RJ Harvey after trading down a couple of times. So for everybody that's wondering, what picks of the Denver Broncos have? Well, as of the time that you're likely listening to this, they have two picks in the fourth round still 11 and 1.30. But after trading down twice,
Starting point is 00:02:30 They take RJ Harvey, one of the most explosive running backs in this class. And of course, as we went through our mock draft scenarios, Cody, I feel like we maybe did RJ Harvey a disservice because we consistently had running back going much higher. I think that's one of the biggest reasons why a lot of folks are kind of surprised by this pick is because, well, we had the Denver Broncos taking a back a lot higher in our mock draft scenarios. And so for a guy like RJ Harvey, kind of flying under the radar for this fan base, but you see a lot of folks. What's funny is how different the perception is of the Broncos class this
Starting point is 00:03:05 year, right? I mean, last year, the NFL draft community hated the Broncos draft. And this year, well, they absolutely love it. They love the Jada Baron or Jada Barron pick in round one. And they love the RJ Harvey pick in round two. The guy has such explosive speed four four in the 40 yard dash. And that explosiveness consistently showed up there at UCF where he made one big play after another. You see just more and more people saying good things about him with over 1,500 rushing yards last season, almost 900 yards after contact, tons of forced miss tackles. And a lot of touchdowns, 48 more than any other player in UCF history. This guy, he can play. Man, he's spring.
Starting point is 00:03:47 I've already begun my film review that I'm going to put up over a Mile High Sports YouTube page. But just watching this kid, I mean, Sarah, 23, 16 touchdowns on the ground last season at UCF, 22 touchdowns on the ground, essentially almost back to back 1,500-yard rushing seasons. He had 1,416 and 2023, about 1,57 this past season. He averaged 6.8 yards per carry, which was obviously a career high for him while at UCF. I mean, the one thing you were looking at with this guy is just explosiveness. And I'd say the early thing that I've seen in the film reviews that I'm currently doing, I'm looking at his game against Arizona.
Starting point is 00:04:20 I'm looking against Colorado. I'm looking against Iowa State, I believe. And the thing that stands out is just he's a decisive guy. I think he's patient, you know, out there in the backfield, you know, for example, they'd run a lot of pistol formations out there. They'd motion him to a side. He'd get it. And really, it's read and react. Okay, hey, you're taking your initial handoff.
Starting point is 00:04:39 You're looking for that opening that's there. If it's not there, he finds a way to bounce it outside. I mean, Sarah's got legit four four speed, as you mentioned. But here's the thing. He's five foot eight, almost fringe five foot nine, but he's built like a just a brick house. He's 205 pounds. So, you know, the thing he does is he absorbs contact, really. well. People are like, oh, 580, he's going to get hurt. Not at his weight, not at 205.
Starting point is 00:05:03 I mean, this is a guy that when I'm watching so far on my film breakdowns of him, you know, he's good in past protection. He's getting involved in there. Man, he's, he's underrated out of the backfield. I think 13 and a half yards per catch out of the backfield has a potential receiver there at UCF this past season. But man, just the explosiveness on the ground. I mean, this is a guy who can extend it out wide. And just when you think there's a guy that's going to make a tackle on the perimeter, he gets around the edge. bends the corner. But man, his vision, I would say is one thing that stands out early on to me. This is a good pickup for the Broncos. Look, and I know people, I know Broncos fans hate this turn.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Look, I'm sorry, but this is what Sean Payton calls it. He does have Joker-like traits, essentially. So now you add him to the running back room where at this position where he's going around two, Sarah, he's going to be a very big part of this Broncos offense this upcoming season. It's going to force somebody out in that running back room. I love the RJ Harvey Pick. And look, I think a lot of Broncos fans were in panic mode the moment Trayvion, Henderson went to the New England Patriots. And they're like, oh, who are we going to get at running back now? The reality is, I agree with what you said earlier.
Starting point is 00:06:11 We've been doing mock drafts where we've taken aback in round one, round two. And Sean Peyton, George Peyton told us that, like, they read mock drafts sometimes. They look at it and they're like the NFL train. It's kind of silly. Like our mock drafts, Sean Payton says it's embarrassing sometimes, not necessarily our mock drafts. but in general because I think mock drafts have really ruined the perception of players, right? Broncos fans, there are a lot of them. We'll address us with Pat Bryant,
Starting point is 00:06:35 but a lot of Broncos fans are mad about Denver's picks because it's not the guys that we took in round one or round two in our mock drafts. And they're like, well, this guy could have been available in round four or round five. We don't know that. And also the Broncos, they grade people a lot differently than we do. So your thoughts on maybe how Harvey can come in and impact this offense right away with, you know, guys like Audrick Estime and Julelea McLaughlin really kind of the favorites already stay on the roster. Well, I think it's great news for Audric Estimate because stylistically speaking, this guy is kind of the yin to his yang.
Starting point is 00:07:08 He's kind of the night to his day, right? He's the exact opposite where Estime is that guy that you literally, as we saw against Kansas City, he's your four minute back, right? When you want to kill four minutes off the clock, you're putting Audric Estime out there. when you want to run the fullness of the Sean Payton offense, you're throwing R.J. Harvey out there. So I think this pick is really bad news for Jaliel McLaughlin. Not that Jaliel can't be depth this season and win a roster spot,
Starting point is 00:07:35 but I don't think necessarily Cody the Broncos are done adding at the running back position in this draft. I think you'd be wise to take advantage of the depth of this class. And here's what I'll say to all the complaints about the Broncos picks, because I know folks don't watch all these games to be able to. to say definitively that. Well, RJ Harvey's a bad pick. Oh, Pat Bryant's a bad pick. Here's what I would say.
Starting point is 00:07:59 If you ain't watching the games, then you don't get to complain, right? That's what I'll say right there. You don't get to complain about a player just because you don't know who he is, just because you didn't put him in your mock drafts, eat a slice of humble pie, go watch the guy and go take an optimistic viewpoint of why an actual NFL front office drafted this player to be on a team that was just in the playoffs and won 10 games. maybe, just maybe, they know more than you do. Now, NFL teams, they don't always get it right.
Starting point is 00:08:27 But you know what? I think Sean Payton has earned the benefit of the doubt. This is definitely, we saw the NFL network guys. I heard them compare this pick to Darren Sprouls. I saw Trevor Sycamma, long-time draft experts, say he's this year's version of Bucky Irving. So you get a guy who compares favorably to a number of players who could be jokers or have been jokers in Sean Payton's offense.
Starting point is 00:08:50 I think this is kind of just a home run pick. Like I'm not going to sit here and say, I'm the biggest RJ Harvey fan. I've been pining for the Broncos to take him forever. Who cares? Like great for anybody that has been. For anybody that's been pounding the table for this guy, that's awesome.
Starting point is 00:09:05 That doesn't mean that we can't like the pick just because we didn't do 10 years worth of research on the guy before the Broncos drafted him. And I think this is a great pick. I think this is a perfect fit for the offense. You know, my saying and my motto is always this. you know, you can be cautious and I think you can question the pick. I think anyone can have questions about whoever the Broncos pick, but you question without
Starting point is 00:09:28 condemning it at first. You know, at least know what you're talking about because a lot of people are saying, oh, this guy, he's terrible. Why did they get this guy? There's a reason. And it's not always stats. It's not always numbers. It's what does this guy do off the field?
Starting point is 00:09:40 What does this guy do in terms of the little details of his job? Like if he's a running back, how is he in past protection? How is he in terms of ball security? How is he in terms of being? able to just see the hole and hit it and be able to get north south quickly versus running east west like there's little things like that there's also you know just the other intangibles like other positions is this guy a willing blocker is he willing to get dirty is he is he does he shy away from contact like all there's different positions have different questions it's okay to question
Starting point is 00:10:09 it but don't condemn it until you've done the research and maybe see exactly what the broncos are maybe adding into the mix here i think r j harvey he's going to have a day one impact here for the broncos and i like what you mentioned if audrick estimate can be that guy that wears down a defense with his physicality. And now you bring in a guy like R.J. Harvey who is physical himself. But man, he's got that 4-4 speed where he could just gash a tired defense. The recipe is there. It's there.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Can the Broncos make it come to fruition? That's the million dollar question. Look, Broncos country, we're not done yet. We're going to break down the Broncos third round pick, Pat Bryant. Why the Broncos decided to get him. It's not because of size. It's not because of speed. It's because of the intangibles.
Starting point is 00:10:49 and what he brings to the depth of that position. We'll break that down and much more here on today's episode, Lockdown Broncos. Starting point is 00:13:26 Make every moment more with Fandu, an official sports betting partner of the NBA. The Denver Broncos added some playmakers for Bo Nix. Unfortunately, it just wasn't exactly who everyone in Broncos country had anticipated. We talked about R.J. Harvey, the running back coming in through the second round, but maybe the biggest sleeper of all throughout this entire draft could be the most polarizing pick is going to be third rounder Pat Bryant, the wide receiver out of Illinois. Cody and I are going to tell you exactly what this guy brings to the table on today's bonus coverage here. Locked on Broncos in Broncos country.
Starting point is 00:14:01 Thanks once again for making us your first listen of the day every single day. You know your voice, Cody and Sayer, no matter what time zone we may be in, we're going to have you covered with all things Denver Broncos, especially surrounding the NFL draft. Cody, let's talk about Pat Bryant. The number one prevailing theme that I saw from Broncos country after this pick was made was massive reach. Definitely could have traded down to get this guy, not an elite athlete, all sorts of things. But the Broncos, when you look at that war room after they made this pick, they were very excited about getting this guy. So let's talk about this selection, Pat Bryant, 74th overall out of Illinois. Yeah, look, I think Sean and George have been very vocal up front all right.
Starting point is 00:14:45 First off, Sean with Kay Adams, right before the Super Bowl, saying we love our wide receiver room more than people think. I asked the question, the pre-JF press conference about that, and he reiterated it. We love the receiver we took two drafts ago. We love the two guys we took in last year's draft, and we may add to this position. We certainly are, whether it be in the draft, whether it be in free agency after the draft. They believe in adding to this room. But here's the thing, Sarah.
Starting point is 00:15:08 And look, it's not the shiny name. It's not the Emeka Egg Bucas. It's not the Matthew Goldens. It's not like the normal names, like the Jaden Higgins that we've done in mock drafts. And this is where I just think the mock drafts have really ruined our ability to separate like, okay, hey, these are just projections. There's nothing concrete about that this guy's going to go here or this guy's going to go here. Nick Eman Worry was a projected first round safety.
Starting point is 00:15:30 Guess what? He goes in round number two. So it just goes to show that you can't just be on this NFL train of thought all the time. So for the Broncos, people are saying, well, this guy's not an elite level route runner. He's not a guy that's got speed where he can separate. Sarah, that's not why the Broncos drafted him here. And look, I think you look at the riding on the wall. They have right now, they've got Cortland Sutton, who's their, what they believe is their premier guy, their number one guy, Marvin Mims.
Starting point is 00:15:56 They love what he've done. They've added Evan Ingram to the tight-in position that Joker role there. But then they expect big jumps here from Devon Valle, from Troy Franklin. but the role of this is, okay, and people are like, well, the Broncos don't have speed. The Broncos have two players, Sarah, that have speed. You got Marvin Mims at 5 foot 11, a downfield, long stretch type of guy that you want to throw deep moon balls to. You love that with Marvin.
Starting point is 00:16:19 But then Troy Franklin's also got Marvin Mims like speed, but he's six foot two, right? So it's more, hey, can we stretch him across the middle of the field? Whereas you look at Cortland Sutton, Evan Ingram, size, athleticism, explosive playability. That's great there. But Sean Peyton has told us time in time again, he values size at the receiver position. And here's what you get. Like the intangibles for Pat Bryant. Look, in the last two seasons at Illinois, 17 touchdowns for him.
Starting point is 00:16:46 But this is a guy who gets involved on the outside. He gets his nose dirty as a perimeter blocker. And here's another thing. He's reliable. What do I mean by that? Well, you can rely on him to show up and do his job. But you can also rely on him to catch the football. Only one drop here at Illinois.
Starting point is 00:17:01 And I think you look at the relationships, Sarah, Jim Leonard a couple years ago. He was an analyst after he had, I think, what hip surgery there, he was an analyst for them before he joined Sean Peyton's staff. He knows a lot of intel on this guy. But the Broncos are adding him to be a depth option. They're not adding him to be a wide receiver one. I think that's what people were enamored with is like, oh, we need a wide receiver one or wide receiver two.
Starting point is 00:17:23 What did Sean Payton say? He mentioned specifically the inner triangle, a third wide receiver, like a wide receiver three. this is a guy who has those traits and those tools to do that is going to be here in 2025 that it's a large question he's going to compete with devon valet and a t perry for some primary playing time this upcoming season or time on the rotation this isn't a sexy pick sir but this is the pick that when you're looking at the work that brian has done it makes sense because this is a guy who puts in the work he produces and he excels in his role he's not necessarily your number one guy and i think that's what the broncos are
Starting point is 00:17:59 looking to add to this room. I think it's fascinating that a player who ran a 4-6-1 in the 40-yard dash, he averaged over 18 yards of catch last year at Illinois, at 10 touchdown receptions playing in an offense that, I mean, certainly, Cody, we weren't hearing about the Illinois offense every single week when it comes to the college football landscape. And so this guy, just like RJ Harvey, just like Jada Baron, team captains, right? the Broncos prioritized team captains.
Starting point is 00:18:30 Once again, that's always been a thing for George Payton. And we know that obviously Sean Payton likes those types of guys too. Team first guys who just embody toughness. I was doing a little research while you were talking, Cody, there. I was also listening, but I had to do a little research because I was thinking of a little something as we're talking about this Pat Bryant selection, how big of an overreaction we're seeing on the social media sphere about the pick. Do you want to know another player who,
Starting point is 00:18:57 ran a 4-6-1 in the 40-yard dash, who's known for his hands, who's known for, you know, the toe-drag swag, who's kind of known for being a better big-play receiver than maybe his metrics would indicate. Do you want to take a stab at that, Cody? Any guesses?
Starting point is 00:19:11 Who ran a 461-40-yard dash? He's already on the roster, isn't he? He's a premier wide receiver in the NFL, not on the Denver Broncos. Michael Thomas. Not Michael Thomas, but Amon-Raw-St. Brown. I will raise you from Michael Thomas
Starting point is 00:19:26 and Amman-Ross, St. Brown ran a 4-6-1, nearly identical Rast score to that of Pat Bryant at Illinois. Am I going to sit here and say, the Broncos just drafted the next Amman Ra St. Brown? No, I'm not going to say that. But what I am saying is that you drafted a dude who everybody who actually watched him play said, guys got incredible hands, toughness, he's physical, team captain. Sure, the speed, the long speed is not there, but the explosiveness is absolutely there. He's in the green.
Starting point is 00:19:56 When you look at his Rast score in terms of the explosiveness traits, he's in the green. He scored a seven, Cody, listen to this, a 7.08 on the Rass scale. Amunra St. Brown, 7.14. So I'm just saying Broncos country that there's a lot more that meets the eye with these guys. If the Broncos were that excited to get this player, they see something in him that other teams simply were not. And this is where I think everyone just has to let it play out. You know, this is, we may not know right away in 2025 what, what value Bryant's going to instantly bring to the table or to the wide receiver room. But he could be one of those guys.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Like, for example, people are saying the same thing about Devon Veil last year. And all of a sudden, we go into OTAs and rookie minicamp and fans are on the berm at training camp. Like, wow, I really loving this Devon Veilie guy. Let the process play out. Like I said, question the pick, but don't condemn it until we know for sure. I mean, the fact that we're already saying, oh, this guy's a bus. This is a reach. Let's not do that.
Starting point is 00:20:51 Like, I understand. It's not the sexy name that everyone is expecting or thinking of, but you've got to give these players a chance as well. You could grow to end up really liking them, and we'll see what he's going to bring to the table. I'll tell you what. I like his mentality. I think he interviews well.
Starting point is 00:21:04 You know, we got him on the conference call. This is a guy who is very composed and very mature for what he's talking about. And there's conviction and things that he says. You know, he's a big believer in blocking. He says, I'm a big believer. Like, it's who I am as a receiver. If you don't block, you don't get the rock. and I want to help my running back score.
Starting point is 00:21:22 Well, the Broncos had a running back in round number two, which, by the way, I did not add this. When we were talking about RJ Harvey, not only does he offer value in the run game, also the receiving game, but Sarah also as a returner at UCF as well, kick return specifically. He could be the guy that's standing there next to Marvin Mims.
Starting point is 00:21:40 Those could be your two kick return guys this upcoming season. I certainly would like that. But look, we knew it. I think rounds one and rounds two, you're hoping to just add players. you feel I can contribute on day one. Round three is depth. Can we get good depth?
Starting point is 00:21:55 The Broncos believe that they did. And results are just wait and see. So Broncos country, let us know your thoughts on these picks here. Make sure you do your research on them. Go through and watch some film. I'll be doing some film breakdowns of these prospects over at Mile High Sports on their YouTube page. But like I said, go do your research.
Starting point is 00:22:11 Don't look at just stat boxes or box scores or anything like that. Go learn about the player, not just who you see on the field, but learn about what's off the field as well because that's something, the Broncos, they value a lot. Sarah, any closing thoughts before we get out of today's bonus episode? Can't wait to see what the Broncos do on day three. I mean, it's going to be very, very fun. The depth of this class is outrageous.
Starting point is 00:22:33 We still see a lot of big name players on the board. And Cody, as we're rounding this out here, the Denver Broncos is never a dull moment. They just traded back into the end here of day two. So obviously, we get a chance to talk about another player. The ticker is saying that the Broncos took Savion Jones, a defensive lineman slash edge out of LSU, 65, 280 pounds. It's an interesting selection here for the Broncos. We assumed at some point that they were going to get a defensive lineman,
Starting point is 00:23:06 didn't know they were going to make this trade up with the Philadelphia Eagles at 101 to get it. So now on day two of the draft, the Denver Broncos, they come away with RJ Harvey. They come away with Pat Bryant on the offensive side, and now you get Savian Jones from LSU. What are your thoughts on this pick? Yes, sir, this is a very interesting move here because this is not necessarily a position of need for the Broncos, but as you're looking at it, right,
Starting point is 00:23:29 he's classified as an edge guy, hybrid defensive end. And at his height, like, 6 foot 5, I don't think he's going to be a stand-up edge guy. I think he's going to be a rotational defensive end at this point. At least this is what the early, like, live instant reaction to this, because we thought the Broncos were, done in round three of course they trade right back into the back end at the very end to be able to get a player like Savion Jones.
Starting point is 00:23:52 So for me, probably a good depth edition. I imagine this is probably going to put Inoma Uwazareke's roster status kind of into question a little bit. I mean, I know they like Jordan Jackson, but this may very well be. I wonder if this is the defensive lineman that they were talking about in the pre-draft press conference that they feel like can go right away. You look at his numbers at LSU, 2021. nothing really appeared in three, three total, you know, games there.
Starting point is 00:24:18 23, overall, 23 total tackles in 2022, four and a half sacks, 32 tackles in 2023 with two and a half sacks. And then at 2024, 40 tackles, 19 of them solo, two passes batted at the line of scrimmage, four and a half sacks and two force fumbles. So imagine at this point, this is a guy who's probably going to factor in as maybe kind of like what Dandre Tillman did, but I imagine more so this is a defensive end rotation. piece more so than it is an edge rusher on the outside. Yeah, I feel exactly the same.
Starting point is 00:24:51 When you look at some of the stuff that he did at the senior bowl, as they're kind of rolling the highlights on NFL network, the guy playing on a down front, just utilizing his length and his kind of just, he looks like he's kind of got a bat out of hell sort of thing. I love using that phraseology there, Cody, because it's so fascinating to me when a guy comes out of his stance, just with that level of explosiveness.
Starting point is 00:25:14 and then you utilize your length, your physicality, and you're just kind of your instinctive sort of like blood in the water sort of feel as a defensive lineman to rip and spin and kind of just create havoc for an offensive lineman. That's exactly kind of what I see when we're watching him kind of in these highlights right now. And I think that's fascinating because look, we talked about the extension opportunities for John Franklin Myers,
Starting point is 00:25:42 for Zach Allen, for Malcolm Roach, You know, all those guys play different spots along the defensive front. This could be potentially that longer term look for somebody like John Franklin Myers if the Broncos don't end up giving him an extension. Well, the way that I'm looking at too is like looking at compensation right here, our good friend Mike Cliss says he figures to be a 3-4 DN rather than outside linebacker. Obviously here moments we're going to hear from George Payton, Sean Payton, before, I mean, probably after we wrap up this podcast here,
Starting point is 00:26:12 but it says right here where the Broncos are in terms of, of the compensation, obviously they trade up to 101 there. So the Broncos trade picks 11, 113, and 191. So in return from the Eagles, they received 101, which they used on Savion, and then they'll have pick number 134 that they'll get from the Eagles. So they'll be picking relatively, you know, kind of middle of the pack here in round four to start day three of the draft. The interesting hall here for the Broncos.
Starting point is 00:26:39 And look, Broncos country, we're eager for your thoughts. Make sure you let us know your thoughts on these selections here for the Broncos. on what was a wild day two. The Broncos very active in trading down, trading up, acquiring some additional capital here and there, but really just kind of positioning themselves for the meat and bones of this year's NFL draft. Make sure you let us know your thoughts on the selections here for the Broncos.
Starting point is 00:26:59 RJ Harvey, Pat Bryant. And now Savian Jones, who might make this connection as well, Sarah. Jamar Kane was with LSU in 2021. So he knows probably a lot about Savian Jones in terms of maybe being probably his biggest advocate to go out and get him. So I find that to be interesting. I like it. Yeah, because the Broncos missed out earlier on day two. I don't know if they were really going after him, Cody, but they did miss out on. I know there's a connection between Jamar Kane and Omar Norman Lott. I believe that's
Starting point is 00:27:27 his nephew, the kid out of Tennessee. He went to the Kansas City Chiefs. So kind of figured that that could be a guy they would target. But obviously now here, you get somebody like you mentioned that. Maybe this is the guy George Payton was talking about when he said, we feel like there's a guy that could be available on day two or day three that could play right away. Broncos obviously weren't overly confident with a big run on big men on day two of the NFL draft that they would be able to get him even at 111 on day three. So really don't mind the aggressiveness to go and get a D-Lignment here in the third round. Yeah, good. Adding depth at this point here, the Broncos is so far in the draft. If you're keeping score, they've added two defensive players in totality, two offensive players.
Starting point is 00:28:05 So what will day three bring to the table for the Broncos? Obviously, they'll be picking in the 134 range here. Obviously on day three, and look, Broncos country, Sarah Bedinger, myself, we're going to have you covered every single day, every step of the way here as it pertains to the Broncos, building out the back part of their roster now with the final pieces of the NFL draft, undrafted rookie free agency,
