The Denver Broncos linebacker room going into training camp might have an opportunity to be better than what they had last season.
You are locked on Broncos. Your daily Denver Broncos podcast.
Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
What's happening in Broncos country? Cody Roark, Sarah Beniger here for another episode, Locked on Broncos as we continue our training camp position preview series here, focusing on linebacker specifically.
Sarah and I, we are going to predict the Broncos' 50.
three-man roster and how many players stay at the linebacker position here going into 2026.
We'll also highlight why there is a wide open race for the third, fourth, and fifth spots at
linebacker, a position battle to watch for here.
We're going to kick things off by going through what the Broncos inside linebacker room looks
like right now as the team gets ready to go into training camp on July 28th.
This is a position, I would say, in Broncos country that is widely debated about,
whether or not is it better than what they had last year?
Is there more upside going into it this year?
I know how I feel,
but I want to know how you feel about this.
It's a great question, Cody,
because obviously a year ago at this time,
the Denver Broncos told everybody,
our linebacker position is not good enough.
That's why they went out and signed Dre Greenlaw to a contract and free agency,
one of their big splashes that they made last year.
And that was with Alex Singleton and Justin Sternad on the roster,
as well as the majority of these undrafted players
who are currently part of this team's depth chart.
And so what they told us is, hey, this linebacker group,
it's not good enough.
It needs a jolt of talent.
Now, circumstances were a bit different last year at this time, right?
Because last year at this time, Alex Singleton was coming off of a season-ending knee injury
that he suffered in week three against the Buccaneers of that 2024 season.
So there was the element of, hey, what's Singleton?
going to look like coming off of that injury.
And then we saw, I mean, he played pretty much every game last year, right?
Obviously, had the testicular cancer in the middle of the season, played a game with his
teammates kind of knowing that he was going to have to get that taken care of in the
middle of the year, then immediately just comes back after missing very little time.
So Singleton, I think, kind of proved to this coaching staff what he can do and what he can
bring to the table as sort of the, obviously, the green dot guy for the defense,
the communicator of the defense, but just somebody who,
generally leads that unit.
And I think that's where they had the confidence to cut Drey Greenlaw and move
on from that high priced acquisition after just one season, despite the fact that they are
prioritizing in every possible way continuity on this roster.
So what does that say about the fact they cut Drey Greenlaw?
But Cody, yeah, you're right.
I mean, it's what we talked about this with the running back position as well.
Sean Payton doesn't like to say it, but they're running it back.
And they do have, I think, a little bit more upside now than they had a year ago.
And once again, too, I think there's this misconception about the linebacker position.
And you and I, we've certainly highlighted this.
You know, certainly would you like to have a guy who can run a four four sideline to sideline,
but is also a massive thumper in the run game, 100%.
It is so hard to find those types of linebackers.
Everyone's like, oh, you know, you need a Fred Warner.
You need this type of guy.
Those guys are hard to find.
You know, you don't have the Roquan Smiths.
They're not just readily available out there.
So you have to really do a good job of identifying guys in your
scouting process going into pre-draft, you know, workouts, combine, whatever it may be.
And ultimately, it's checking the other boxes, too.
Is this guy a good teammate?
Is he someone you can rely on what he does on the field and off the field?
There's like this, you have to check all these boxes in order to be this perfect.
It's hard.
It is so hard considering how the game is played today.
But you and I have also highlighted that the linebacker position, the way that this defense
is structured, it is almost kind of put in a way, like schematically.
to where the linebacker position, they have pressure on them, right?
There's a lot of complexities to what they have to do in terms of man coverage,
match coverage, or even in zone while also playing their read responsibilities in the run game.
The number one thing is you don't necessarily have to have world beaters at linebacker in this scheme
to have an effective defense.
And the Broncos have proven that.
Alex Singleton is a guy who plays with his hair on fire.
I would say he's kind of the heart and soul of the Broncos defense a little bit in terms of,
you know, where he's out when they lost him.
in 2024 to the ACL, you certainly saw that.
But if you look at this linebacker room now, there is that continuity.
Singleton returns as a starter from last year.
Justin Sternad comes back into the equation now as a full-time starter after starting
eight games last season.
He is the guy.
The Broncos liked what they saw from him to move on from Dre Greenlaw.
But behind them, that's where the question marks come in.
You have two undrafted guys that have made it over the last couple of years,
Lavel Bailey, who made it in 2024, Karen E.
who made it in 2025.
And now you got Red Murdoch, who is your seventh round selection,
the last pick in the NFL draft.
Tori in York, an undrafted guy who the Broncos really like highest guaranteed
signing bonus by an undrafted guy and team history.
And Jordan Turner, who made an impression last year at rookie minicamp,
stood out in the preseason and ultimately earned a spot on the practice squad,
considering where Denver's at.
I like the upside of this room compared to where they were at last year.
but it is still a question mark behind Sternat and Singleton.
It's a big question mark, right?
I mean, especially when you're talking about a defense that has aspirations
of being the best in the NFL.
And we've seen injuries pile up for this team at the linebacker position.
They've had to rotate a bunch of different guys.
I mean, folks remember, Kwan Alexander, Zach Cunningham.
I mean, you can go all the way back to even Joe Schobert.
This team has signed pretty much every linebacker off the street that they could find
to try and come in and help.
They pick up the guy from the Packers.
I can't remember his name now.
Christian Welch.
Christian Welch, absolutely.
And remember, that was with Cody Barton on the team.
So Cody Barton is also in the equation here in terms of the guys they've tried to.
Juan Alexander?
Quon Alexander.
Jack Cunningham?
Yes, they're all part of this, this like mosaic of linebackers that didn't work out for the Denver Broncos.
But it's funny, like the Christian Welch situation at the beginning of 2024 is kind of a microcosm of the problem, isn't it?
because he was out there starting, I'm pretty sure, next to Alex Singleton.
They brought in Cody Barton to play special teams.
And Cody wasn't even going to play in the defense until they're like,
oh, shoot, like this Christian Welch guy is not any good either,
even though I think he's gone on and played.
Who's the guy who went to San Francisco last year and started and played good for them?
Garrett Wallow, he was on the team for a brief period of time.
And he went and played well for San Francisco.
So it's like, dang, the Broncos might have let one get away there.
But it's just been this, like there's three positions that over the last 10 years, Cody,
I think we can all agree they've been revolving doors for this team.
Thankfully, the most important one is now filled by Bonix, a quarterback position.
Thankfully, the other one that was just maddening, almost a joke for the better part of a decade.
Right tackle.
Mike McGlinchie has solidified that.
But now it's like linebacker is that one position, maybe tight end, that this team just
can't seem to figure out.
the Broncos don't draft to it.
When they sign guys, they don't seem to sign the right guys.
Even when they do sign guys who play well, they end up getting hurt somehow.
So it is, in my opinion, the biggest storyline in training camp is can Justin Sternad at just,
I don't know what the word is, Cody?
It's like late bloomer doesn't even hardly apply because this guy has started games for
this team.
We've seen what he can do.
But when has he ever entered training camp as the unquestioned starter?
at the linebacker, but I don't think it's ever happened for him in his career, which I feel like that could give a maybe just punch through the top of this proverbial ceiling at linebacker.
I think there was a chance when he was a rookie, right?
When they drafted him, then he suffered the wrist injury.
I know Ed Donatale at the time was very, very high on Justin Sternad, but he had to miss his rookie season because of the wrist injury that impacted some things.
But now he is the guy.
He's the unquestioned starter next to Alex Singleton.
And look, he was the best linebacker on the roster last year.
I think that's an exciting thing to see now that he knows this defense as well as he doesn't.
And that's one thing I would say about him that has helped him.
His knowledge of this defense, he's a very, very smart player.
I'm excited to see now what that looks like on a full sample size because he was their best
blitzing linebacker, four and a half sacks last season for Sternat.
What does that look like with 17 games when he had that starting in only eight games for Denver last season?
So the lineback room is very interesting.
But those right now are the only two.
spots that are solidified. Alex Singleton, Justin Sternad. There are three or four potential
spots at linebacker that are eventually open. We're going to go through what our position battle
to watch for at linebacker is going to be in featuring a couple undrafted guys and Mr. Irrelevant.

but asking for help, it can still feel hard. And BetterHelp's latest research confirms just that.
Better Helps 2026 State of Stigma Report surveyed 2,000 Americans and revealed the 8,000,000
85% of Americans believe getting support is wise, yet 74% of, say, society discourages people from doing so.
That disconnect is interesting.
Most people believe support is a good thing, but actually taking the step can be difficult.
So it's worth asking, what helps make the conversation feel more normal and more encouraged?
BetterHelp is the world's largest online therapy platform with over 30,000 therapists globally and has helped more than 6 million people connect with support.
Through a short questionnaire, BetterHelp does the initial match.
So people can focus on their therapy goals.
And if the match isn't right, users can switch to a different therapist from tailored recommendations.
I've utilized BetterHelp therapy before in the past.
And look, they are right.
That's one of the things that is the most discouraging about society today is that we all feel like at times men, we need support.
But we've also been encouraged from a young age to not ask for it.
That we've got to be tough.
Well, guess what?
One of the toughest things you can do is find support for yourself and talk about things that are impacting you and bringing you.

We know who the starters will be for the Denver Broncos at the linebacker position, but what about
the depth? Once again, it's a potential top defense in the NFL. Your depth really matters.
And the Broncos, they've got a bunch of, I guess you could call them overdogs at this point from
Mr. Irrelevant to the highest paid undrafted free agent in franchise history.
We're going to break down the depth and position battles to watch for here as the Denver Broncos
assemble their linebacker room for 2026. Broncos country, Cody and I just want to say, we appreciate
you so, so much. I mean, the grind of the off season is what it is, but you rocking with us
every single step of the way it means the world to us. And we love getting to talk Broncos with every
single one of you out there. Shout out to all of you every dayers rocking through the offseason.
and Cody, we're finally at the month of July where training camp is here on the horizon and we can see football.
I know you've got a taste of it at OTAs.
You got to see some of these guys out there on the field.
And I know that from our discussions in the past, you've mentioned the position battle to watch for is obviously just any of these backup spots, right?
But these rookies, I mean, Tori and York, Red Murdoch, it sounds like those two guys, even without the pads on, kind of turned some heads at OTAs and mini camp.
Yeah, they did.
And it was exciting to see even at rookie minicamp, just seeing, hey, how do these guys get ingrained in the process of being a Denver Bronco?
Well, they're in rookie minicamp.
They were the first two guys out there on the field at linebacker, Tori and York out of Texas, A&M, coming from one of the best defenses in college football this past season,
was a team captain, a green dot guy down there.
And then you get Red Murdoch, who was the nation's leading force fumble producer at the linebacker position in NCAA history with 17 force fumbles.
pairing those two guys together, you see they play well alongside each other.
So the Broncos are getting a look at potentially.
And what can these guys do in the preseason together?
With Justin Sternad and Alex seem to be in the key starters,
okay, we want to see what these guys can do.
Look, then there's other guys.
Lavelle Bailey, Karen A Reid, two guys who were undrafted that made the roster
24, 2025, they're back into the equation this upcoming season.
I would make the argument that over Karenne Reed,
And once again, I don't want to sound like I'm ever picking on Corrine.
Corrine is a instinctual player.
But I think from a physical standpoint, cerebralness, like I feel like Tori in York and Red Murdoch,
those guys showcase the linebacker position probably a little bit more.
They're the flashier linebacker prospects.
And maybe Karenne is going to be the smooth operator here at this position.
But I would say right now, York and Murdoch have some momentum coming into training camp.
Now when the pads come on, can they do the same things that we saw?
saw in terms of how they were playing during OTAs, during minicamp.
These are going to be big keys here.
And then Lavelle Bailey, once again, I would say having three years now coming into it with experience in Vance Joseph's defense, learning it.
This could be the opportunity where he really runs away with it and gets that opportunity to be that LB3.
But right now, the position battle to watch, I think we're all assuming there's going to be three spots available here behind Sternat and Singleton.
So that means Red Murdoch, Corrine, Reed, Lavel Bailey, Jordan Turner, and Torrey in New York are going to be competing for three.
potential spots here on the Broncos roster here in training camp.
It's going to be interesting to see how the players like Corrine
Reed, LaVelle Bailey, and Jordan Turner progress in their game as linebackers.
Because we saw Corrine Reed amongst that group lead the, I mean, the trio in special
team snaps play last season, 171 played 36.3% of the team's special team snaps.
And then it was Jordan Turner at 117.
Cody, I mean, that's where we didn't really see Lavelle Bailey get too many call-ups, right?
I mean, he played some for the Broncos last year, but not much.
I think it was 11 snaps defensively, it says, 37 special teams.
And Jordan Turner even out-snapped him defensively, 23 defensive snaps, 117 special teams.
But then Karen A. Reed only played three defensive snaps.
So I think you can maybe get some hints based on that with Jordan.
I think he was called up way later than.
Rene Reed. I think Kerenna made the team, like you said, out of, out of, uh, preseason. But Jordan Turner was a guy who was called up later in the season. So the fact that he got as much run as he did is maybe indicative of where this kind of race is at. Like if Kerenna Reid shot out of the gates before everybody, like Jordan Turner is kind of like creeping his way up past where Korene read is at. And that's what it feels like from what you've told me and from what I've read and seen from others that Jordan Turner is probably that.
guy to watch right now in terms of being the third because red murdock you drafted him even though
he was a seventh round pick even though he's mr irrelevant because you invested draft capital in him
feel like gives him a bit of an edge and then the signing bonus of the guaranteed money that they gave
to troy and york folks need to understand they gave him basically the equivalent of the guaranteed
money that you give a high sixth round draft pick that's the 325 000 i think roughly is what it was
You're talking about a guy who's getting a guarantee better than most sixth rounders.
So that speaks, once again, volumes as we talk about roster construction.
That's almost triple the guaranteed money the Broncos gave Jolil McLaughin,
who we talked about in yesterday's episode.
So I think that's the, that right there tells you all you need to know.
Money talks.
And so it doesn't always mean everything, but certainly when it comes to those two guys,
Red, Murdoch, Tori, and York, I feel like they would be tough for Carrenne Reed and LaVelle Bailey to beat out.
Yeah, and Reed last year, remember, he went on an IR stint after that week 10 game against the Las Vegas
Thursday night football. He had a hamstring injury, landed on IR. Now, eventually he came back,
but they didn't have it to the process where he was going through and, you know, he was a game day
and active after he was able to come back from that injury. But Jordan Turner, man, this is a guy
who also looks like he yoked up quite a bit this offseason, just at least looking at him in a jersey
and a helmet. He looks much bigger than what we saw last season during training camp.
And I think you've seen this momentum from him.
He was one of the guys that stood out there in OTAs in minicamp,
not only defensively at offball linebacker,
but I would also say specifically on special teams.
He seems like a Rizzy guy that every time I'm watching them do things,
you're going, good job, Turner, 55.
55's getting more reps there, or he's the first guy getting reps,
and he's doing things and he's drills the right way,
the way that they're coaching them to do it.
He is going to be a fun player to watch.
I like what we saw from him in the preseason last.
I think a lot of people forget, what was he? He had two sacks. I think in one game defensively.
He was another guy that Vance Joseph felt very comfortable about blitzing. So I think if there is a position battle to watch for a man, man, man.
Well, linebacker three, linebacker four, linebacker five spots. They are wide open amongst this group of players right here, these five guys, three spots available.
Who will be the odd man in, the odd man out? Well, Sarah and I, we are going to share our predictions here on the Broncos linebacker room on the 53 man roster coming up here on today's episode.
episode of the show. Competition is certainly going to elevate the Broncos lineback room behind
Justin Sternad and Alex Singleton with three spots up for grabs potentially amongst five players
who's got the upper hand, who makes the roster. We'll share our training camp predictions here
on today's episode show real quick. Broncos country, thanks once again for tuning in making us your
first listening here on Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day plus the number one sports
podcast network in the country. We appreciate you so much here as we go through our training camp
position previews. All right, Sarah.
No hot takes this year when it comes to the Broncos linebacker room, which is a nice thing to say.
I think last year we were kind of debating on, all right, Drew Sanders is competing with Justin
Sternat and Alex Singleton for a starting job next to Dre Greenlaw.
Training Camp comes around.
Drew Sanders goes down with an injury.
Alex Singleton kind of just runs away with it.
They're like, hey, you know what?
We're not going to have this open competition.
And then Justin Sternard eventually has to step in and start because Drake Greenlaw was banged up.
And Justin proved like, wow, Justin, he actually.
might be a guy that you should start.
We were having conversations like, hey, even when Drake comes back or
Singleton comes back, there's no way that Justin Sternat cannot start based on how he
was playing at linebacker.
Well, now you don't have to worry about that.
Your two starters are set.
How many spots do you think the Broncos will carry it inside linebacker when it comes
to the 53 man roster?
And I want to know from you specifically who is linebacker three, four, and five, if you're
carrying three extra guys.
I am, Cody.
yeah, if I'm George Payton, I'll put on my George
Peyton hat here for a second. I just
put it on for those who are listening and not
watching. I'm keeping five
keeping five linebackers.
And yeah, George, yeah, that's
great. The little piece sign, man.
And we need George to do the peace
sign again. He's got to bring it back.
What was that? 2020 when they were doing the
virtual everything.
But man, yeah, that boy, that
brings back memories, Cody. My goodness.
Speaking of 2020, it wasn't that when Justin
Snad was drafted? So maybe
maybe it's an appropriate callback for this episode.
I'm keeping the top two guys, obviously,
Singleton and Sternad,
and then I'm going to go with number three linebacker.
I think seniority always plays a role, right?
So I'm going to say Jordan Turner wins that third linebacker spot out of the gates,
and then it's going to be Red Murdoch and Tori and York.
I think those are the five guys that you keep.
I really,
the more we dig into Jordan Turner,
the more interesting he kind of becomes, right?
Because remember last year,
he was not a priority undrafted free agent.
He won a try out at the rookie minicamp and then worked his way up.
So like when you talk about the underdogs of underdogs,
this is a guy who wasn't anybody's undrafted free agent priority.
He was on nobody's radar.
They're like after the undrafted free agent frenzy,
he's sitting there like Will Smith in the empty house on Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
Like, you know, why don't nobody want me, man?
You know what I'm saying?
That's the two different episodes.
understand that people but but in all seriousness that's that's the same that's what i'm saying right so
jordan turner cody i i didn't even know this i i didn't know this until we started recording i looked
some stuff up did you know that jim leonard had jordan turner in his defense back at wisconsin back
in 2021 i can't remember when uh jim left wisconsin but he was at wisconsin from 2021 to 23
before he transferred to michigan state for 2024 so just once
again, the ties that bind. I know Jim is now in Buffalo, but, you know, Jordan was brought on the team last year.
Kind of interesting. Maybe he's one of those guys that we've got to fire up the hype train for a little bit because he's, maybe there's more than meets the eye there.
Well, now you're telling me that, you know, if Jordan Turner were to be a guy that, you know, Denver was maybe trying to wave or something, you know, they wanted to make room for other guys.
Maybe Jim Leonard to the Buffalo bill is sweeping and say, nah, we're going to grab him. I think, ooh, that could be interesting.
Don't want that to happen, though. I agree with you. I like.
what I've seen from Jordan Turner. Once again, there's a term that I always like using with guys
like him and how he plays. He's a piss missile when you talk about how he reacts. I want to see more
of that. I agree with you. I'm in the same boat when it comes to them carrying five linebackers on the
53. And I would say Jordan Turner, based on the momentum, I would say it's a coin flip between he
and Red Murdoch for the LB3 spot. And then Tori and York is that other guy. I think because of the
guaranteed money, I think from what we've seen from York, even if he's under
size that hasn't mattered. You and I even did this conversation as well when we were talking about
linebacker with Danny Treveithen being undersized coming out of college as well. It necessarily
didn't matter because if you can play the position, if you can fill your gaps, make plays in the
past game, it doesn't matter. And ultimately, I think where these guys are going to elevate
Denver's roster immediately, you look at Jordan Turner, special teams. You look at Red Murdoch
and Torrey Newark, these three guys are going to play special teams primarily. These guys all have
core four attached to their name when I look at if they are on special teams,
they're going to play every unit and they're going to be some of your best players
alongside your safeties on those groups.
I like that room.
And look, here's the thing with Lavelle Bailey.
I think Lavelle Bailey is going to, I think he's got a lot to prove here coming into
training camp.
I always kind of feel like he was talked about last year.
He got some reps with the ones.
And then all of a sudden the Broncos, they didn't bring him out of the 53 last year.
And he was on the practice squad.
He made the 53 man roster in 2024.
then the next day after roster cuts,
they wave him so they can make room for another guy
and they bring him back onto the practice squad
from that fluctuation stuff.
Lavelle is the type of guy, I think,
can play well if he's given the opportunity.
We just haven't seen the opportunity really present itself yet,
especially with guys like Jordan Turner getting more run.
This off season, the Broncos made it, I'd say, an effort
to go out there and raise a level of competition
knowing that they were going to run it back with two guys
that they had a lot of familiarity with.
They're going to add to the.
room and it's going to challenge guys like Reed and ultimately Lavelle Bailey determining whether
or not they're going to make the roster.
And I think it's harder for Lavelle.
I think it's harder for Kareni this year to make the 53 because of Tori and York, Red Murdoch.
And I'd say the continued growth year of Jordan Turner.
Yeah, those two guys that they brought in this year are just superior linebacker prospects than
what we've seen from the guys that they brought in recent years.
I mean, yes, we can talk about the overdogs and the underdogs and whatnot.
And I love those stories, right?
Everybody loves those stories.
But Red Murdoch was supposed to be a fourth or fifth round pick.
Tori and York was supposed to be a fourth or fifth round pick.
And in a draft class that was just loaded at linebacker, we talked about this all throughout
the pre-draft process.
Like we did so many mock draft scenarios where we were picking two linebackers most
of the time.
And they were going any, I mean, the guys that we were picking, I think they ended up probably
going at least a round or two later than where we were projecting.
protecting Cody because everybody in the NFL was thinking the same thing.
Well, this is such a deep class.
Let's take the other positions of priority and let the linebackers kind of fall to us.
That happened legitimately for the Broncos first pick, right?
Their second rounder that they had, Anthony Hill Jr.
was about to fall right into their laps.
And then the Titans kind of swoop in and scoop him up and get him.
Who knows if the Broncos would actually take him?
But I think that that speaks to the overall kind of way that this draft fell at the position.
And so you feel like you got guys who probably can outplay their draft status or undrafted free agent status significantly.
The only question was Tori and York, Cody.
We heard like the guys over at Pro Football Focus, Trevor Sycamma had a great breakdown.
You can search that into YouTube and look at what he had to say because he basically put it out there that if this guy was a little bit bigger, he'd be linebacker one in the class.
And he really loved what he did as two-time captain.
I think he's one of the youngest players in this draft class.
The only question is, is like, with shorter arms at the NFL level,
can you wrap up these bigger, faster players, right?
That's the big question for him is at the college level, you can get by.
But, I mean, in the NFL, can you?
So Torian York's size disadvantage is significant,
but his playmaking is there.
Torian literally just turned 21.
Just turned 21.
Just three weeks ago.

years of age. Youngest player right now, I'd say probably on the Broncos roster. And for him to have
I think as much of an accomplished career at Texas A&M as he did, I think the Broncos like him as a guy that
maybe could develop into a future starter alongside Red Murdoch. Maybe that is the vision here.
I think they had a draftable grade on York specifically. And I think his size is a big reason why he
fell. So I'm curious to see how it all plays out for training camp. Broncos countries, we go through our
training camp position previews. We've shared our predictions. We want to hear from you when it comes to
off-ball linebacker. How many players will Denver carry? And who will those guys be behind Justin
Sternard and Alex Singleton? Make sure you let us know here. But tomorrow's episode of the show Broncos
country, our training camp position previews continue. And we're going to look at the wide receiver room.
It is a loaded room. And there might not be much competition because of how loaded it is.
We're going to take a deep dive here as to whether or not the Broncos should carry five or six guys
at this position. We'll go through that on tomorrow's episode. Lock on Broncos.
