The Denver Broncos' greatest problem is having the cornerback depth that they have.
But in 2026, it could be the last year.
We see the starting tree of PS2, Riley Moss, and Jayquan Macmillan.
You are Locked on Broncos, your daily Denver Broncos podcast.
Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
What's up, Broncos country?
Cody Roak here on today's episode of the show.
We're taking a look at the Denver Broncos cornerback position going into OTAs.
And I'll tell you why 2026.
rotation at this position could be very similar to what we saw in 2025, but with Jadae,
Baron having a little bit more of an increased role on defense and on special teams.
Riley Moss is entering the final year of his deal with the team.
And if he's going to be in competition for his job, it is his job to lose going into the
summer.
We're going to kick things off by talking about why 2026 could be the final year.
We see the starting quarterback trio of Pastor 10, 2nd, Riley Moss and Jayquan McMillan
intact is the Bronco champagne problems could cause some other problems with them down the line here.
So let's get to the conversation here, folks.
Obviously, I think one of the bigger storylines here coming into OTAs, everybody is wondering
what the cornerback position is going to look like opposite of PS2.
I think everybody looks at Jayquan Macmillan's return and says, okay, he's staying at that spot.
But there is questions with Riley Moss entering his last year.
Is he going to be in competition?
That's something we'll highlight later.
but let's approach it from the subject that this is the starting group in 2026.
PS2, Riley Moss, J-Quon.
You can make an argument that that is the best starting cornerback trio in the NFL.
I think teams like the Houston Texans, I think they have a valid argument.
I think the Philadelphia Eagles also have an argument with the players that they have.
But the Broncos have what we call champagne problems, a luxury.
I think that many other teams in the NFL would be dying to have.
It is rare in today's game because as we see the game spread them out a little bit more,
more wide receiver personnel groupings, more empty sets.
You're seeing a challenge for defenses to have the type of personnel to be able to cover some of the better receivers in the game.
I mentioned Denver, Houston, and Philly.
All three of those teams have corners that you feel like can match up with anybody in the NFL,
any wide receiving group.
And certainly this would be tested for the Broncos this upcoming season with some of the teams that they face,
obviously on the scheduled this year.
But when I look at Jayquan Macmillan and the nickel,
I think he's one of the best starting young nickel defenders in the NFL
and his rise from being an undrafted guy to being an exclusive rights,
free agent guy who's just producing and bawling at a very team cost effective approach
for them goes into this offseason as a restricted free agent,
signs the tender is going to come back.
And ultimately, after the season, there'll be a free agent.
But this could be a placeholder.
The RFA tender could be a placeholder for him getting an extension.
We can make arguments for and against this as we look.
But you look at J-Quan's impact in the nickel as a guy who's Vance Joseph feels comfortable,
blitzing and deploying sack Patrick Mahomes twice in one game,
picked him off in the same exact game.
I mean, Mahomes was having nightmares about number 29 on the field when the Broncos won at home this past season
when a healthy Patrick Mahomes was on the field, by the way.
He's a game changer at that position.
And it's hard, I think, to find quality starting nickels in today's game.
And with that spread amount approach that we see in the NFL, defenses are shifting to a base nickel formation.
Nickel meaning five defensive backs, two outside guys, one slot corner and two safeties.
That is your nickel personnel that we're primarily seeing across the NFL today, especially with teams playing out of the two high shell,
which is the two safeties playing over the top where they can either stay back or they can roll guys down,
play them in the box, play one guy to the middle of the field.
But this is a good problem for the Broncos to have.
And I think Vic Fangio said it best.
It's hard.
You look at 32 teams.
You don't have that many different starting corners in the NFL,
especially when you talk about you need three really good guys in today's game.
The Broncos have, once again, enviable depth across the board in terms of the three guys that are starting for them.
And then the two guys, I'd say, are backups, rotational guys right now.
The Broncos have one of the best problems in the league.
And this could be the year where we see that get tested going into 2027, because if this is, in fact,
last year of PS2, Riley Moss and Jayquan together.
I think that they're going to go out with a bang.
If this unit stays healthy, they're going to produce at a high level because of who they
are, because of who PS2 is as an eraser, because of Riley Moss, even though he's highly
targeted, he's a guy that's also going to be a high impact player coming up against the
run.
19 passes defense this past season.
I think Riley's got this unfair reputation in terms of, I'd say, some prescription lens
that people have on him.
We'll talk about that a little bit later on as the show goes on.
but name me right now a better starting nickel in the NFL than J.
Kwan McNabb.
I'm sure there's a few arguments,
but I think when you talk about impact production,
especially on the fact that he's not making a lot of money
and that he has been one of the best producers at the position in the league
while not being a high-salry player,
I think speaks volumes to where Denver is at right now.
So that to me is one of the bigger storylines going into OTAs that I have my on,
going into this offseason, going to training camp,
and obviously 2026 in general,
is this cornerback trio. That's one of the bigger storylines. I think also another one here, folks.
Riley Moss playing on the last year of his deal. What does that look like for the Denver Broncos?
What is their plan internally with Riley? Now, typically, from what we have seen, George Peyton,
Sean Payton, they believe in getting guys that they draft two second contracts. But with the roster
that Denver has, the strength of it, certainly, and the depth that they have across the board,
it makes certain things like this interesting on paper because Riley I think going into his rookie year
we didn't get to see much of him because he had core muscle surgery and then he played later on down
the stretch.
2024 he won the starting job and everyone was clamoring for like what do the Broncos do?
Like after Riley went out with a knee injury against the Raiders, I think that was week 10 or
week 12 and he had to miss some time.
Everybody was was begging for Riley to get back on the field.
And when he got back, he struggled against T. Higgins, even though.
no, he had tightly contested coverage.
I think the perception of cornerback play today, a lot of folks think a guy giving up a catch means that he's getting smoked.
You've got to have the discernment to understand what is the difference between tightly contested catches giving up versus getting smoked in general.
Riley has all the traits to be a very good cornerback to in today's NFL.
But do the Broncos want to pay him?
What would his market value be?
As we see this position across the league starting to rise in terms of contract valuation, PS2 got a high.
contract that cornerback. But it was actually very team friendly when you look at how the market has
since changed since he got his deal. And I think guys like Quignon Mitchell, I think guys like
Christian Gonzalez are certainly going to change this market here once again. So where does that put
Riley Moss in terms of contract valuation? It's a great question. Jayquan Macmillan,
as we talked about getting the RFA tender placed on him, could just be a placeholder, could
get an extension here. I think the greater argument here is can the Denver Broncos keep
all three of these guys beyond 2026.
That is what we call champagne probes.
I saw somebody recently used that term when describing the Broncos
and their financial situation when looking at this cornerback room,
two guys you have to pay after this season.
I think it's a great analogy.
And I think George Payton, Sean Peyton,
and I think Rich Rotato in terms of managing the salary cap,
when you look at what's coming after this year,
Ben Powers, his money off the books to the Broncos extend him.
Bo Nicks after this year would be eligible to get
extension. You look at two years from now, Mike McGlinchie's contract is going to be up.
Going into next season, Cortland Sutton and Jalen Wattell's contract hits, their salary
cap is going to bump up to $27, $28 million each. So how do you manage the roster gymnastics
of trying to get the cap to where it needs to be while also taking care of players that you value?
This is the challenge with how this team is constructed, but I'm curious to see how they will
approach it, especially when they can restructure PS2. They can restructure Nick Benito,
Zach Allen and other guys that they just recently signed two contract extensions.
I think that's obviously another storyline.
And then the last one, I think, is going to be how are these players, the younger players,
like Judey Barron, Chris Abram Strain, how are these younger players here who are hungry for more snaps?
How do they get onto the football field?
Well, the clearest path for them right now here, Broncos country, for those two players specifically,
is competition.
And if Riley Moss entering the last year of his deal is facing competition going into this summer,
well, it's his job to lose, and it's those players' jobs to gain.
We'll tell you all about that here on today's episode of the show.

Riley Moss has been the unquestioned starting cornerback to opposite of Patrick Sartan,
and the numbers certainly suggest he is a good cornerback in today's NFL.
However, as he enters the last year of his deal, if the Broncos have questions about whether
or not they want to extend him, they may open up some competition.
But even if they do, it is his spot to lose.
We'll highlight that here on today's episode of the show.

So let's get into this conversation here because as we touched on it a little bit briefly in the last segment,
And Riley entering the last year of his deal, there's some pressure on him.
But I also think he's got so much to gain from being in this position.
I think Riley has responded throughout his career to some adversity, whether it be injuries,
whether that be competition, whether that be the string of games where he's being penalized
for playing his position.
I think we can look at Riley Moss folk.
And I think that this is where I talked about it earlier.
There's a certain prescription lens that I feel like a lot of people have when it comes to looking
at Riley Moss and no disrespect. There are a lot of people who have never played cornerback who really
don't know the nuances of the position that are out that are so outspoken about Riley and they're
say, oh, he's garbage. He's not. Like Riley is a great technical cornerback. He's a guy that also comes up and
plays the run well. Are there areas of Riley's game where he can be better? Absolutely. And I think
he worked on that down the stretch last season. He went to the point in practice and I was there. I saw him do
it where he's putting on boxing gloves so he's not grabbing.
There's one thing that I could encourage Riley to do because Riley last offseason put on 10
pounds of muscle.
He wanted to get stronger because he was tired of guys like T. Higgins pushing off of him
when he's in phase.
This is where I think Riley, I think relies on his speed sometimes a little too much.
He's up at the line of scrimmage at times against some of the faster receivers in the NFL
and he's mirroring them off the line of scrimmage.
So they're moving.
He's reacting.
opening up and he's keeping a neutral base between his hips and his shoulders to where he's not
overly committing to opening up to the outside or opening up turning inside because when that happens
and the receiver makes the other move, well, now you're smoked. He does a really good job of being
able to mirror steps off the line of scrimmage. He understands that really well. But if he's going to
play press, if he's put on this muscle, my thing to Riley would be, man, use that strength that you've
gained. Use that punch, jam that wide receiver off the line of scrimmage. Because think about it
this way. If you are opening up and you're reacting to a wide receiver, let's say that's running
vertical and you're just running with him and you're not necessarily getting in phase, well,
then when the ball is thrown and now the wide receiver is turning, if let's say it's underthrown
or it's a back shoulder, well, now that wide receiver is bracing, he's in a better position.
And now if you make contact, it's going to be considered pass interference because it doesn't
seem like you're making a play on the football. Now, Riley, if he punches and jam some of these
receivers and gets his hand on the hip and squeezes, gets in phase and uses the 12th man,
which we always call the sideline. Well, guess what? When the ball is thrown and now you're in phase,
your hand is on the hip, they're not going to call you for that because you're in position.
You have equal right to the football and you're not impeding the contact or the progress of the
wide receiver there. So you're squeezing, you're using it, and now you're just going up and
making a play in the football. I think his play against Trey Tucker in 2024 in Denver, I think was
a great example of him being able to do that, though he was mirroring.
him step for step versus being physical and using his hands.
That's where Riley's just got to get better.
Just maintain getting in face, staying on that hip pocket.
You feel it and you break down.
I think Riley relied a lot on being an athlete, which he is.
But Riley could be an athlete plus a physical player.
And I think that's going to help his game a lot more here.
But that's ultimately why I think it is Riley's spot to lose.
Going into the last year, if the Broncos have any questions,
which I don't know where they're thinking about Riley right now.
But if they have questions, can Riley be the cornerback two opposite of PS2 for the long term?
If they're confident in that, then you extend him.
If they have questions about that, here's how you answer that.
You create competition going into training camp.
You've got these young, hungry guys like Jaday Barron who can play on the outside, can play on the inside.
And then you got Chris Abram's dream, who's primarily an outside player.
Get these guys in competition, work them in and challenge Riley.
And if Riley responds and wins it, well, then that gives you everything you need to know to extend.
him. Okay. Riley responded well. He won the competition outright. We're going to extend him. And I don't know what
that contract valuation would look like because of what we've talked about earlier with the rising costs.
What does a good cornerback to salary go for in today's NFL? I think it's a great question to look at.
And obviously, it's going to change going into 20, 27 after free agency. But now you have an idea that
Riley is that guy. And it doesn't mean that Jadae and Chris Abramsdrain, if they don't win a competition,
it doesn't mean that those guys aren't the guys. It means that maybe those guys roles are
are suited right now with the team and the nucleus that this Broncos defense has as being
role players. There's nothing wrong with that, especially when I go back to having three high
quality starting corners in today's NFL, 19 passes defense for Riley this past season.
You want to see a guy answer the bell. Riley did that, folks. And look, I think that prescription
lens conversations creeping back up once again. People don't realize Riley Moss has the
hardest job in the NFL.
And that is playing opposite of Pat Sertan.
If you don't believe me, here are the numbers.
Riley Moss in 2024 had 103 targets thrown to.
And obviously he missed a handful of games because of the injury,
the knee injury.
He suffered against the Raiders.
He went on, I think, short-term I are missed four games there.
So 103 total targets for Riley in 2024 in a year where he played 14 games.
That's a lot.
That's a high volume right there.
Now in 2025, with 17 total games played, Riley had 118 targets thrown his way.
You want to look at the contrast?
2025 for PS2, even though PS2 missed some games due to injury,
PS2 had 61 total targets in 2025.
Riley 118.
PS2 in 2024, reigning defending defensive player the year year,
62 total targets in 2024 compared to Riley's 103.
Naturally, NFL teams are not going to throw to Pat Sertan's way.
They're going to do whatever they can to avoid it.
So that means they're going to go to the other corner.
And that is Riley.
I think with the volume of Riley has seen, his ability to play against the football,
make big plays, be tightly contested in coverage, especially in third down situations.
There are times even in goal line situations where he's being targeted in the red zone
and he has a pass breakup.
He's smothering a guy in coverage and there's no flag.
And all of a sudden, now you force a field goal.
Riley's doing his job.
That's the thing I want to highlight.
I think a lot of people are split on that.
Because Riley's seeing all these targets, he's going to naturally probably give up more catches than you would anticipate.
Because of that, people want to replace him.
Be careful what you wish for is all I say with that.
I think Riley has proven to be a very, very good cornerback to in today's NFL.
I think he can go through and do even more.
But if there is competition, we're spotlight on that between Moss, Chris Abrams drain, Jaday, Barron.
And here's where some things are going to have to change for these guys.
Last season, Jide, as a first round rookie who had to learn various roles in this defense,
played 30% of the team's defensive snaps, did a really good job filling in on the dime
role.
And when Paster Tan went down, Jaday came in and played well too.
He played 19% of Denver's special team snaps last season.
So that's going to obviously have to increase this upcoming year.
Whereas Chris Abrams drain, 19% of Denver's defensive snaps, all of that came when
PS2 was out with his pectoral injury, but he played 47% of the special team snaps.
there. So he emerged as a starter on special teams, a core four specialist. But I think the roles for this Broncos defense need to remain as is going into 2026 as they were last season because if it's not broke, don't fix it. But the Broncos, their good problem that they have is something that could set them apart in terms of, I think, winning a Super Bowl or losing one ultimately because depth will ultimately get tested. As we have seen, the Broncos got tested at cornerback in 2024 in terms of their.
depth.
2025 when PS2 went down, I thought that they responded well because their depth was much
better than it was the year prior.
And you want to keep that intact.
But with Riley entering the last year of his deal, with Jayquan playing on a restricted
free agent tender, his deal will be up after next season.
You have an opportunity to really evaluate these two younger guys where I don't think the
vision for Chris Abrams drain was, we're drafting this got to be a future starter.
We draft this guy because he's got starter upside.
Now, Denver's situation since he's been drafted has changed contextually with the emergence of Riley,
with Jayquan's further emergence, and with Denver adding jade, kind of makes things very interesting going forward.
So competition between those three guys at training camp Broncos country could be on the horizon here.
Let us know your thoughts on today's episode of the show.
But coming up next, I'm going to tell you why 2026 will be similar to the Broncos approach at Corner in 2025.
And why that's a good thing for the team here on today's episode of the show.
The Denver Broncos cornerback room has enviable depth from their starters to their backup players to a point where NFL teams across the league could be paying attention to how things maneuver in the offseason at training camp, preseason, maybe at the NFL trade deadline.
But right now, the Broncos need to keep this room intact.
Once again, Broncos Country, thanks for tuning in, making us your first list.
And we appreciate you so much here as we preview OTAs, which begins next week.
I'll be at practice.
So you have OTA coverage here on Locked on Broncos.
you're never going to miss out on what's going on if you stay locked into the show.
So make sure you subscribe or follow.
So you never miss out on anything here.
But let's get into this conversation about the rotation here.
If I had to predict it today, what the Broncos cornerback room is going to look like in terms of the 53 men roster,
early prediction, I'm going to say that there's going to be five guys here.
You're going to have PS2, Riley Moss, J-Quan, Jide, and Chris Abrams drain.
Five guys here because I think in our safety preview, we had them keeping around six safeties.
That kind of alternates.
One year Denver will keep six corners, five safeties.
I think it's going to be the inverse this year.
Six safeties, five corners.
And then on the practice squad, I think they're going to have Jaden Robinson back.
Obviously, he played out of Oregon State.
And then Amari Harvey cornerback out of Georgia Tech.
I think they'll keep him on the practice squad as well.
And Reese Taylor might have some competition with Brent Austin.
We'll see how that kind of plays out here.
But ultimately, what matters here is the on-field product in 2026 at this position specifically.
Granted, everybody stays healthy.
And for the most part, that has been the case minus PS2's short stint and Riley Moss's short stint in 2024 with his injury here.
Those guys all stepped up to the play.
Right now, the Broncos should not break this room up or mess with it because I think right now,
let's go into the season saying that that starting trio of Riley, PS2, and J-Quon is intact.
Okay, so what does that roster look like if they have the five guys there at this position?
Well, now you have guys that could play anywhere and everywhere.
We talk about depth being so important.
Denver realizes this at corner where they have come out, George Payton,
Sean Payton have specifically said this is a premium position in today's NFL.
In the event of an injury to Riley Moss to PS2 or to Jake Juan,
you need to have the adequate players who can step up and fill that role.
So what does that look like?
Well, let's start with Jaday Barron.
Last year at the by week, Vance Joseph went on Peter Schrager's podcast
and was talking about the vision for Jaday right now is the nickel,
but future outlook is on the outside.
He's got flex capability.
And I think that is so important to have.
Whereas Chris Abrams drain,
I think he's viewed primarily as an outside corner.
So what does this mean?
Obviously, Jaday's got a lot of value to this team.
And his role specifically was playing inside of the dime.
I think that is going to remain intact that when the Broncos go dime,
six defensive backs, that's what that means.
You don't necessarily have to put,
Jide in the slot and dime.
He could play on the outside of dime.
You could have PS2 matching up against somebody in the slot and dime or Riley matching up
with somebody in the slot and dime.
Jemak and Jadae, these guys can also play on the outside.
That's the thing I like about this room is that it's not just one guy really being
pigeon to being this one specific role.
PS2 could play everywhere.
Riley could play everywhere.
Jayquan could play everywhere.
Jada can play everywhere.
I say the question is Abrams Drain.
That's not a bad problem to have.
right now. So let's say there was an injury to J-Quain. Well, J-Day would be the guy that goes in
and fills into that role right there. If there's an injury to PS2, it would more than likely be
Jadae getting reps. So the Broncos last year when it happened to Pat, they rotated not only Jadae,
but Chris Abram's drain. And I think that was more so because Jadae's role was already established as
in the dime, we need this guy here. And they entrusted him to be a tight end eraser, so to speak,
against guys like Travis Kelsey, Jake Ferguson, Dallas Goddard.
They wanted to match him up against tight ends in specific situations.
And at times, they would also put Jidey at linebacker in some nickel personnel
where they would match him up on a running back.
And this came specifically against the Philadelphia Eagles.
He was lined up against Sequin.
And I don't know if that was a move that they made because they had gotten Alex Singleton
on a wheel route there.
But he's this matchup piece that it can be just week to week.
we believe that Jadae could take away this tight end or we can match them up specifically in passing down situations against this running back.
And if we get rid of one of these guys or if we trade one of them, we are not going to have that flexibility, I would say defensively in our secondary anymore.
It would be hard. It would take a massive step back.
So that is why my belief, and I'm planting my flag on it, and I'm curious for your thoughts, too, Broncos country, that Denver is not going to mess with this room.
I think the rotation, who they keep here is going to be relatively similar with the guys that they're going to have on the practice squad.
It gives them flexibility, probably three corners on the practice squad, Reese Taylor, Brent Austin, Amari Harvey.
They might find some other guys too that maybe stand out for some other teams during training camp as they're evaluating 31 other rosters in the cut down process in terms of who they want to add, who they face in the preseason might give them a tell.
Hey, we want to pinpoint if this guy gets released by this team.
we have seen this guy in a preseason game.
We want to snag him and bring him in here
because we think that he's got these traits.
This is a spot that's just, it's so good to be in for Denver.
And I don't understand why fans want to break it up.
This is a room with the starters, with the backup guys,
that I think you look at maybe 29, 28 other teams around the NFL
would be dying to have what the Broncos, what the Texans,
what the Philadelphia Eagles certainly do have.
And I think that's why this roster has been constructed as is.
And if I had to guess what Sean Payton and George Payton, what they're going to do,
they're not going to mess with this.
They like Riley.
They like Jekwon.
They like Jadae.
They like Chris Abrams Drain.
And understandably, like maybe this isn't a problem that gets addressed in 2026 if
CAD wants more playing time or if Jada wants more playing time.
That could very well take place after.
this upcoming season.
But my belief, at least from what I gather,
Denver's entering this offseason
saying we may have competition, but ultimately
our cornerback room is going to stay the same.
Teams are going to call and probably be interested in Jadae.
Teams are going to probably be interested in Riley
and maybe even Chris Abrams drain.
However, if teams are interested in Riley,
the situation would be very similar to what the Broncos
maybe did with Bradley Chubb,
where let's say that they want to see more Jadae.
It's the NFL trade deadline.
teams are calling about Riley and he has not yet been extended.
There could be a scenario where teams will trade for Riley.
Now, here's the thing.
They won't give up capital, but it would more so be, if we're trading for this player,
we're signing this player to an extension because why would we trade capital to rent a player
for half a season?
That is something I think you also have to keep an eye on here.
But just because Denver has this embarrassment of riches,
this enviable depth across the NFL does not mean that they need to make a move
to break it up right now.
That's my biggest argument.
If I had the Judge Judy robe and the gavel,
I'd be pounding it on the table right now.
And I'll be saying, do not mess with this
because it is a good problem to have.
It is something that's not going to hurt the team
by having this many cornerbacks who are capable of playing
and guys that they feel like capable of starting
in the event of an injury to one of their key starters.
It's not broke.
Don't fix it.
this is a great problem to have.
And I'd say I'm excited to see how this room is going to play out as the Broncos dive into OTAs.
Next week, folks, June 2nd is when things kick off.
Not sure exactly what day Sean is going to have media out there.
Usually at the start of OTAs, we get one of the first three days or one of the every three days.
But we do get all three days of mandatory mini camp.
So that's going to be obviously I think 16th, 17th, 18th is mandatory mini camp.
I'll be out there at every practice that were allowed to, Broncos country.
