Starting point is 00:00:55 story. Broncos quarterback, Bo Nix will not play in Friday's preseason open. I'll tell you why that's the smart move here on today's episode of the show. Sarah, as we went out to Wednesday's practice. it wasn't necessarily your typical training camp practice that we've been accustomed to seeing it was a true walkthrough in the truest sense. And throughout the entire practice, we're watching. And I'm seeing it's Jared Stidham and Sam Ellinger getting the walkthrough reps. And I thought to myself, okay, Bo Nix might not be playing in this game. And Sean Payton gets to the podium.

Starting point is 00:01:25 He announces officially, hey, the starters are going to play 10 to 15 snaps. Oh, by the way, Bo will not be playing in this game. He'll play in the next two games. what was your initial reaction to that? Because I think it opened up a little bit of a can of worms. I've gotten mixed reaction from members across Broncos country. People are concerned. People are like, why isn't Bo playing?

Starting point is 00:01:44 I think there are a lot of good reasons why Bo is not playing in this game. But I wanted to know your thoughts first. Well, my initial reaction was good. Like, I didn't want it to play in this game, right? Because you're on, you know, enemy territory or you're on foreign soil, right? You're playing in Atlanta where they play on turf, which, you know, coming on. off of a couple ankle procedures this offseason. Like, I'd rather he play on the grass that the Walton-Penner family

Starting point is 00:02:09 ownership group in Denver is like, you know, curating and maintaining and updating all the time and flying it in from Arizona when they need to or whatever, you know, they'll do anything to make that the best field possible. So I would rather Bow Nix be making his debut at home anyway. But then you factor in, like, the Broncos are already down their top three centers. I mean, I know we're not talking about the unofficial, you know, depth chart, but all the guys that are listed at the center position are hurt right now and working their way back to action, I suppose.

Starting point is 00:02:38 So you're down, you know, your top three centers. You're playing on foreign soil there. You have an opportunity to have him make his debut at home in Denver. I think that's the better option, Cody, especially because it is just the first preseason game. He didn't participate too much in the offseason program until mandatory minicamp. So I think this is the smart way to go about it, even though he feels like he's 100% and Sean Payton.

Starting point is 00:03:02 said he thinks he's 100% as well. Yeah, and he is. Like I think a lot of people have messaged me is Bo injured. No, Bo is not injured, guys. Bo is fine. I've literally watched him out of practice. And I've watched him since training campus began. He's been a full go.

Starting point is 00:03:15 Nothing has been bothering Bo, at least from our vantage point here. But Sean did say, and I want to reiterate this, because I think this is the important part of it. If we were playing a game, like, and he said that, but what he means is regular season game, Bo would be playing and Bo would be 100%. And Bo would also tell you the same thing. But in these situations specifically, you brought up the point. The Broncos already down Luke Wattenberg, though I will say Luke Wattenberg, Alex Forsyth, both were wearing their pads during today's practice but then worked on the side field.

Starting point is 00:03:45 Wattenberg all week long has been in full pads on the side field getting in work. So that tells me that he's close. I imagine we'll see him back next week. Alex Forsyth back in a helmet, shoulder pads as well during Wednesday's practice, which is a great sign for him. So help is on the way there is Ms. fire would say. Not unfortunately, for the Broncos, Michael Dieter is not going to be playing this season, unfortunately. He suffered a season-ending injury is what Sean Payton told us after practice,

Starting point is 00:04:12 a season-ending quad injury, watched him get carted off the other day. So that kind of puts the Broncos center depth and dire straits for this specific game. Now, Calvin Throckmorton is a veteran guy. Certainly, you know, could bow snap, you know, take some snaps from Calvin, you know, I'm sure it would be fine, but that's not what you want in this game. You don't want to go out there on the turf, as you mentioned, which Sean Payton earlier this week. I don't know if many people caught it. He was asked about the World Cup and the grass and he says, we prefer grass. It gets a natural surface.

Starting point is 00:04:38 Like we practice on it. And then for the Broncos Wednesday practice, they were outside on the grass. They weren't indoor at the Pat Bowlin Fieldhouse on the turf, even though they're going to be playing in a dome here on Friday. Yeah. And I think, Cody, that's, again, it just points to the fact that this is the smart move, right? If there's any thing whatsoever that's giving you pause or, you know, you're kind of looking ahead at the worst case scenario and you're saying, well, what happens

Starting point is 00:05:04 if the fourth string center, if it's Throck Morton, like, steps on Bo's foot and he re-injures? Like, who's responsible for that? That'd be Sean Payton for allowing Bo Knicks to play in the game with the fourth string center. So you don't want to have any sort of issues that

Starting point is 00:05:20 pop up that, you know, obviously you don't want to be operating in a state of fear all season. At the same time, like, let's be smart about this. Let's let him make his debut in Denver. It gives the other guy's opportunity, as we're going to talk about today, like you mentioned, to each split a half.

Starting point is 00:05:37 And it gives you the opportunity to continue to evaluate no matter what, right? Because Bo is going to be fine. He's going to be able to play some in the preseason. He's going to get some reps. And I just don't think there's any reason to rush that process, right? When you have the opportunity to let him do that in Denver, under your terms, your conditions on your field, he gets to do his like he gets to be at home he gets to sleep at his in his own bed that night like all those sorts of things i feel like would be a factor if i was part of making that decision well the thing i like about this too when you factor and you only get three preseason games you no longer have the four that i feel like four was really valuable for evaluating your roster guys on the back end but i would rather bowl play two consecutive games week two week three then you have that little time period off at you know as you assemble your 53 months

Starting point is 00:06:28 man roster and you practice and you prepare for Monday night football, right? I would rather that than Bo play week one, week two, doesn't play third preseason game. And now you have almost a two and a half, almost three week layoff before you play your regular season opener. So I just think that's the best vantage point here for both sides here. And I think specifically for Bo, if Boe wasn't coming off of a season ending injury, you know, in surgery eight months ago, Sarah, he would be playing in this game. He'd likely play in all three preseason games, but might play a limited amount in that third

Starting point is 00:06:57 pre-season game. It might have gotten a series there, but I don't think that there's any reason to panic. I definitely understand that Broncos country read like, Bo's not playing. What's going on? It's only because this has been long planned out. Sean Payton even said that himself. He said, this decision was probably made a month, two months ago in advance in regards to the first preseason game. So not a problem here at all. We do know that the starters, other starters for the most part, will be playing 10 to 15 snaps in this game according to Sean Payton. So you're starting. You're offensive line for the most part, your receivers for the most part. And then Sean even mentioned that the injured group of players. I imagine a lot of players are on the side field, Nate Atkins,

Starting point is 00:07:37 Marvin Mims, Jalen Waddle, probably won't be traveling to this game. They'll probably be staying back in Denver. But this will be good for repetition for a lot of these guys to get something, to get warm a little bit, and then probably a little bit more of an expansive look next week. But then you get to see the back-end party of roster for a majority of this game. And that's going to set the stage for the battle, I'd say in training camp that everybody's got their eye on. Sarah, that is the quarterback competition between Sam Ellinger and Jared Stim. That becomes the headline for Friday's game. And we'll talk about what we're looking for in both those QBs here on today's episode of the show.

Starting point is 00:10:27 We're one day away from doing a game day preview. Cody, it feels great to finally be back in this position. But I just want to quickly say, I know we share this sentiment that we appreciate the every day or so much for tuning in rocking with us every single day here at Lockdown Broncos, especially if you've been rocking throughout the entire offseason, throughout training camp, man, we appreciate you so much. Starting point is 00:10:48 Let's talk about this QB2 battle is kind of the headline for this preseason game. against Atlanta. Could be worse, Cody. Could be a QB1 battle like they've got going on the opposite sideline, where Tua Tungle Vaillo is going to be starting off the game for the Falcons, kind of a dangerous little play for them there to have him going up against his Broncos defense. But I digress there. We could talk about that a little bit later. Let's talk about Jared Stidham starting off this game. I think obviously he's got a lot to prove after the way things went in the AFC championship game, even with the things that were out of his

Starting point is 00:11:23 control, right? The weather, you know, very little margin for error in a game like that. Kind of a tough circumstance. But obviously, there is a battle ongoing. It feels like this often isn't for that job. Well, here's the question. Who gets to start? Is it Steady or is it Ellinger? Because at training camp, there seems to be a rotation where Boe will get all the first team reps and then it'll alternate between Stiddy getting the reps behind Bo or Sam. So who gets the first reps in this third preseason game. I'm very curious about that. I would imagine to maybe hedge my bets. It's probably going to be Jared. But this is important. Jared is going to have a lot of different guys to throw to here, Sarah. I mean, he's going to have Cortland Sutton. Not going to

Starting point is 00:12:04 have, obviously, J.Lawto, which Jalen Wado would be nice for any quarterback. I almost feel like you could be QB proof with a guy like Jalen and even Cortland. Probably no Marvin Mims. We anticipate those two guys. No Michael Bandy, who is actually one of Jared Stedham's most coveted target so far throughout training camp. He's been banged up with an injury. So we'll see if bandy makes his way back or if he ends up being one of those guys that stays home. So then for Stitty, you know, you're going to get Pat Bryant, Troy Franklin. You're going to get Cortland. You're going to get Hakeem Butler, Cameron Ross, these other guys. My question is, okay, does Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant with these quarterbacks, do they only play 10 to 15 snaps or could we see

Starting point is 00:12:42 more Troy Franklin? I have a feeling, Sarah, that Pat Bryant will probably be in that 10 to 15 play. range here alongside Cortland. I imagine we might see a lot of Troy Franklin, maybe for the first half, and then you're going to start seeing those other guys get in. But Jared Stidham, arguably, you'll have better talent to work with in the first half than maybe Ellinger will in the second half. Yeah, and that I suppose we'll see because I think I have a feeling. Hakeem Butler could be a little bit of a preseason star for the Broncos here, Cody.

Starting point is 00:13:13 I mean, there's always somebody at the wide receiver position, right, that sort of finds a way to step up and make a name. name for themselves. Maybe it's him. Little Jordan Humphrey, is he expected to play much? I mean, I guess I don't know what his status is. I would assume he's going to play. So he'll be one of those guys out there as well. But yeah, it's going to be fascinated because you do want to get equal, you know, we want to see Stidham with the good receivers for lack of better way of putting it. And we want to see Ellinger with the good receivers. Right. So you give those guys equal opportunities throughout the course of the preseason. But man, yeah, this first game is

Starting point is 00:13:47 going to be that you build some serious momentum, you know, right out of the gates of the preseason. So I, and I'm interested by what the Broncos mindset is going to be here because if the decision is financially motivated, you would think that it's already kind of made, right? Because you could save $4.5 million by cutting Stidum. You could save $6.5 million by trading him before the start of the year. And Ellinger really doesn't cost very much on the salary cap relative to, I mean, what what you're typically paying a backup quarterback in today's NFL. So if it's a financially motivated movement, then I wonder if the decision is kind of already made

Starting point is 00:14:27 and the Broncos are hopeful that Stidham, like, hey, we'll throw him out there to start this game against the Falcons. We want him to play so well that like Darren Mojee is saying, hey, I got to have this guy or Detroit who just lost Bridgewater. They're saying, hey, we need to have him as our backup to Jared Gough. I don't know. What do you think the Broncos' motivation is here? like why a QB2 battle?

Starting point is 00:14:48 Is it purely a football move? Is it financial? What do you view this as being? I think it's mainly a football move here. To my understanding, I don't think the Broncos care too much about the financial parameters, knowing just where they believe that they're flexible. Now, certainly I think if they were to get calls.

Starting point is 00:15:04 And let's say Jared Stidham, who was a standout in the preseason last year amongst all quarterbacks. If I'm not mistaken, I think he led the NFL in the preseason passing yards amongst all the QBs who played last year. He had a very efficient. I think he was, what, 30 of 30. 38 passing through collectively throughout three games last season. So he had a hot preseason.

Starting point is 00:15:22 There might be a team out there that will have interest. I'm sure other teams around the NFL right now, they're maybe shaky about their starter. Or if you're looking at maybe Arizona, Arizona could be a team as well that might even be paying attention to this game saying, okay, let's get a guy like Jared Stidham. Then I think the Broncos would entertain that offer. But I think right now they're going to let this play out organically from what I understand.

Starting point is 00:15:44 Yes, Stidham has the money factor kind of in his bag. I think it's more so as the veterans stand, but not necessarily a financial move here for Denver. And they like Ellinger a lot. So I think you just got to let these guys go out there and sling it. And this is going to be a great opportunity to do so. And here's what I'm looking at too, Sarah, because this is going to be the first time this year, the second time ever that Davis Webb has called plays in an NFL game. And for those that don't remember, let's go to a little flashback when it was just Jared Stidham and Sam Ellinger last year playing in a preseason game.

Starting point is 00:16:12 No Bo Nix. Steadie got the start. He was 16 to 23 passing for 200. 140 yards and two touchdowns. Remember, he was really connecting with Pat Bryant and Troy Franklin in that game against A. Z. Ellinger came in and was 14 of 16 passing for 162 yards. They both had a high production there. Obviously, Denver had well over 400 yards, I think of offense here.

Starting point is 00:16:33 If I'm not mistaken, they actually had collectively 562, which is great. You want that type of efficiency. But there was also a strong emphasis on run the football. They had 32 rushing attempts collectively as a team. 30 if you take away Sam Ellinger running on a couple of plays. I'm excited to see not only just how this opens up the QB2 battle, but also how this opens up maybe Davis Webb's approach on, will we see that run past balance that we saw in Davis's first game?

Starting point is 00:17:00 That's what I'm looking forward to seeing amidst these two QBs playing. I'm looking forward to that so much. I'd almost forgotten about that up until you said it, because obviously we've been anticipating Davis Webb calling the plays this, but my brain has not allowed me to connect the fact that we're going to get that like in the preseason. I mean, the preseason is here. It's tomorrow. So my brain has yet to connect these two dots as excited as we are.

Starting point is 00:17:25 But I love what you just brought up. It was getting me kind of like daydreaming a little bit about the personnel groupings. Like I keep forgetting like, oh, whoever starts this game is going to get Evan Ingram out there as well. And he dominated that game early on in the preseason last year as well. And Jared, yeah, Jared Stidham, got him the ball quickly. How much under-cender? One, yeah, what was it, 67 yards? 58. 58.

Starting point is 00:17:51 Close enough. Gosh, I'm too optimistic here. You are right. No, you got the number. Troy Franklin had 67, but. Okay, shoot, I knew that. You were right. I am.

Starting point is 00:18:01 I'm always right, dang it. No, I'm just kidding. But look, how much under center will we see? How much play action bootlegs will we see? How much 12 personnel do we see? What do we kind of see in terms of these, I know we're going to talk about the young guys, but we talk about the weapons for each quarterback.

Starting point is 00:18:18 It's going to be really fun. Like Jonah Coleman is going to be coming in whoever is the second quarterback most likely, right? And so you have all these guys, the rookies, and you have the first unit that even with Pat Bryant, Troy Franklin, I just get really pumped because the depth of this roster is going to get a chance to shine.

Starting point is 00:18:36 And these two quarterbacks, I think they're going to put their best foot forward. And it's going to make it that much more exciting for us to evaluate. And I think the Broncos have a bit of a, I think they're on what, a seven game winning streak here, Cody, in the preseason. So a little bit on the line. You want to keep that going. Sean cares about that too. He was asked about that following Wednesday's practice and we want to win everything. Like we would just, it's the competitive nature in him. So yeah, of course, the Broncos are coming in this game. They want to win. And so I'm very excited to see what transpires here.

Starting point is 00:19:04 Sarah and I obviously have a little bit more of an in-depth preview for you guys on tomorrow's episode of the show. Starting point is 00:21:54 Sarah, this is going to be part of what we talk about a little bit tomorrow. We're actually going to give our player names tomorrow. We're going to give our keys to victory, the storylines we want to see unfold. But I feel like we've got to highlight some of the young players, which young guys have the most to prove against the Atlanta Falcons? I'm going to go with a guy who's been on the roster for a handful of years, but is facing a lot of questions. I'm going to go with Drew Sanders as one of the young guys that I feel like probably has the most approved

Starting point is 00:22:18 coming into Friday's preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons. He is probably going to play quite a bit after Nick Benito, Jonathan Cooper, come off the field, and then you're going to have Jonah Ellis, who the Broncos. I think he's clear cut that number three guy. He's almost like a 2A, 2B to Cooper at this point in their eyes, Q Robinson. but I think he's going to play a lot probably from the third quarter through the rest of the game. We will probably see Drew Sanders. Yes, 100%.

Starting point is 00:22:41 That's a great pick. I can't wait to watch him play. I am really excited for him. I know a lot of folks want to write him off. And we've done a lot of talks on this show about him. I've written plenty of articles about him because of his draft status, quite frankly. I mean, Broncos haven't had first round picks very much over the last five years. And so being that he was one of the highest selections that they've had in the last.

Starting point is 00:23:04 five seasons. I mean, right? I mean, they haven't had many since Passertan came aboard. So he's one of their highest picks. So you kind of put that pressure on him. It's a little unfair, but excited to see how he responds to you know, it sounds like he's having a pretty decent training. So

Starting point is 00:23:20 I'm excited to see him play as well as Jaday, Baron Cody. I think he's got a lot to prove in this game. On the initial depth chart, he was listed as both the number two nickel and the number two outside corner. I assume we're going to probably see him working a little bit both, but hopefully primarily on the outside, which is what Vance Joseph has said in the past.

Starting point is 00:23:38 It's their vision for him is to play on the outside. So we'll kind of see. But I guess I don't really care where he plays. I think that I'm looking forward to seeing how he plays because I know the Falcons have a couple of young wide receivers that they're excited about as well. Branch, I think, is the rookie that they have out of Georgia. So they've got a number of guys that are going to test him, even in their backups. So I'm looking forward to that.

Starting point is 00:24:02 I think those two guys have a lot of pressure. I would also say the camp superstars, right? Pat Bryant, Jonah Ellis. Like, they're not necessarily, they don't have a lot to prove in terms of like, well, their roster standing is in question or their spot on the depth chart is in question. I don't think that's the case. But now that everybody's heard all camp, like these guys are dominating, I think everyone's going to want to see them go out there and do exactly that. Yeah, they want to see a little something, something from all the guys that we've been talking about here on the show.

Starting point is 00:24:27 And I certainly understand that. And also, too, in that same breath, like, I think it's very important to highlight some of the things that we see. common in the preseason. And not to say this is going to take place with Pat Bryan or Jonah Ellis, I think that would be earth shatteringly shocking. But I would say often at times when we talk about players who have stood out during training camps, like, all right, they look great in practice. How do they look in a game?

Starting point is 00:24:50 That's not applicable. I'm saying to Pat Bryant or Jonah. I want to be very clear when I say that. But it's also the inverse of that, too, where we could see guys not making plays at practice, then all of a sudden they get to the preseason game. They're making plays left and right. So as I'm going into Friday's game, I'm keeping my eye on, okay. Who's showcasing what we've already seen and who is making plays?

Starting point is 00:25:08 They're like, wait, we haven't seen this in practice. I'm going to be taking note of that. And I also think I'm going to play a little game as well. I'm going to be charting as the game goes on. Every time the Broncos offense is out there, Sarah, I'm going to be charting, okay, what personnel they're in? And I'm going to keep a little tally box, like a little checkmark to see how many times they're an 11, 12, 13 personnel, you name it.

Starting point is 00:25:26 We're going to go and look at all that stuff. But I also want to see Justin Jolie and Dallon Bentley. I want to see these young tight-ins getting involved, the tight-in position for the time. the most part in camp. There's been a couple of days where the feature where these guys are catching passes, but then there's other days where the tied-in position is being used to block a lot. So I want to see the young tight-ins get some run as well.

Starting point is 00:25:45 Yeah, I really do too. And maybe with that ticker that you have of the 11 personnel, 12, 13, etc. Maybe we have a ticker going in terms of the pre-snap motion because I think that's going to be interesting to follow. How many plays do the Broncos have pre-snap motion? Because it sounds like from what I've seen and heard that that's a lot of, been much more heavily incorporated this year than in years past. So definitely going to be keeping track of those things there.

Starting point is 00:26:12 In terms of specific players, too, Cody, I want to see who steps up in the return game. Like, especially if Marvin Mims isn't playing, which obviously he hasn't been practicing, so he ain't playing. I think this is an opportunity for somebody to, I don't know if make the roster, that's pretty dramatic before the first preseason game, but you never know if somebody takes one back to the house and gets people talking like that's the that's what i want to see is somebody kind of forcing a little bit of competition there not because i want marvin to lose his job but because we saw last year michael bandy comes in against houston muff's the first punt that gets kicked to him

Starting point is 00:26:49 i mean that's a pressure pack situation but you're a championship caliber team you've got to have more than one guy who can catch punts so i want to see that i want to see somebody bust one and kickoff return and I want to see somebody bust somebody's, you know, face mask and a, I don't want it to be illegal and I don't want anybody getting hurt, but I grew up in the 90s, okay? I want to see somebody get busted up on a kickoff. I want to see a big hit. Big hit.

Starting point is 00:27:14 Yeah, that makes me feel like, man, Chris Berman and the boys from the old NFL Sunday countdown would have had this hit in a segment. I want to see that from somebody in this game. Oh, I like that. Okay, let's do a little bold prediction here. I'm going to say Lavel Bailey is going to have a huge hit on kickoff. and Friday's game.
