Starting point is 00:00:00 Two of the oldest franchises in the National Football League doing battle on Sunday at SoFi, and I know both of them are trying to get into the win column. You are Locked on NFL crossover, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. What's going on, everybody? Welcome into crossover Thursday. I am your host, David Rugamire of the Lockdown Chargers podcast. And I am joined by Sarah Beniger of.
Starting point is 00:00:37 the Locked-on Broncos podcast. Before we get into this crossover, I got to tell you that today's episode is brought to you by Kalshi. For a limited time, download Kalshi, and use code locked on to get $25.
Starting point is 00:00:47 When you trade $25, Kalshi, trade what's next? Sayre, we are going to get into the biggest storylines for both of these franchises. Obviously, I would say both these teams not where they want to be at this point in the season,
Starting point is 00:01:04 still very early on. But then we're going to get into the key matchups, that we know are going to play a part in deciding this game on Sunday and, of course, wrapping things up with the keys to victory. And as this game is at SoFi, and you are the visitor, we'll go ahead and kick things off with the Broncos. What is the biggest story in Denver? Well, the biggest story for this game, David, is it's breakout time for Bo Nix, right? Obviously, Bo Nix hasn't had the best start to this season. He's had moments, right, against the Jaguars,
Starting point is 00:01:34 had a pretty darn good game overall even. And against the Los Angeles Rams had a stellar second half. But other than that, I mean, everybody on the Broncos stunk against the Chiefs, so you can't really pin that all on Bo Nix. But then this past week, he's got everybody in the fan base, not everybody. I shouldn't make blanket statements. He's got many in the fan base absolutely infuriated. Like, wait a second.
Starting point is 00:01:59 I thought year three, Bo Nix is supposed to be the guy to go out there and earn a big money contract. I thought he's supposed to take this huge jump. And look, unmet expectations are the source of many frustrations, right? I think with everybody in Chargers fandom can agree with that. Oh, yeah. Start off the season the way that they have. But look, with Bo Nix, it's like the pressure and the weight of the world is on his shoulders. And it literally, you know, cost him his dang ankle in the playoffs last year. He felt the pressure. And it's just tough. It's tough when you have no running game to speak of and your passing game can only do so much when you have no running game. And, you know, Bo is just he's, he's a streaky player. There's no doubt about it. He's a
Starting point is 00:02:40 streaky player, but that's why we need the streak to start in this game against the Chargers. Yeah, totally understand it. And I know obviously, you know, they have a first time offensive coordinator calling plays over there in Denver in Davis Webb. Any whispers that, you know, if things continue to not progress the way that Brunk. because fans want that the play calling duty goes back to that guy who, you know, I don't know, it's a Super Bowl champion and also one of the best offensive minds in NFL history
Starting point is 00:03:09 in Sean Payton. Yeah, Sean Payton kind of figured it out at some point, didn't he knows what he's doing a little bit. I mean, a little bit. Look, look,
Starting point is 00:03:17 there's whispers, right? I mean, but that's been the talk that we had like after the game and the immediate aftermath, you kind of start to play the blame game. You know, who deserves the most playing.
Starting point is 00:03:28 It starts. with your guys on the field, your players, and then it goes all the way up the chain until you get to Sean. And so you kind of have to ask the question, like, well, Sean, you want to be the first head coach in NFL history
Starting point is 00:03:40 to win a Super Bowl with two different franchises. The buck stops with you. So if the offense is struggling to this degree, are you going to let that continue to happen, right? And I think that's the question that you really have to answer is, it's not about do we believe in Davis Webb as a play caller? Absolutely, 100%. That may not be.
Starting point is 00:03:58 for right now. That may have been what you had to do to keep him around, but that may not be it may be mission critical to make that change. And so I know Brandon Stokely, a former Broncos receiver who works in the Denver media right now, he kind of put it out there on Twitter on Wednesday
Starting point is 00:04:15 night that he's hearing that Sean is going to take it over as soon as this weekend against the Chargers. But I would say take it with a grain of salt, right? Because until you hear it from the horse's mouth, until you see him with the play sheet on the sideline and the headset on he's doing everything like I would say just kind of holding out on that but it wouldn't surprise like
Starting point is 00:04:33 that's the I think maybe that's the better answer to that question it would not surprise if that was the case even this weekend well and it's a volatile situation right because it's the first time offensive coordinator and it's four games in we're already talking about taking taking those responsibilities away from him and it's you know you're playing a double edge sword when with that situation of course it's a delicate one but in the NFL it's all about wins and losses and there's expectations for the Broncos who were in the AFC championship game last year to go back there and continue to do damage in the playoffs. But for the Chargers, the biggest story for us is, oh, man, injuries on the offensive line again.
Starting point is 00:05:11 Here we go again. Roshan Slater out with an ankle injury on IR, going to miss several weeks. Don't know when he's going to be coming back. Joe Alt, going to miss this game that came out from Ian Rappaport, that he's going to be rehabbing his neck injury. and he is not going to be out there on Sunday, although there's no plans to put him on IR, so that is a positive note. But there is a strong possibility
Starting point is 00:05:35 that the Chargers could be suiting up with four rookies on their offensive line on Sunday, and that is a very scary proposition. Trevor Penning started that left card last week, suffered a concussion, had to leave. Most likely they're going to be on their third and fifth best tackle, six-string left card, second or third string center.
Starting point is 00:05:57 It is a absolute nightmare. Fortunately for the Chargers, when I look at the Broncos, their pass rush, at least on the outsides, has not been as prolific as it was last year when they went gangbusters on the league and went crazy with the sacks. It hasn't been as much with the pass rushers on the outside. It's more on the inside,
Starting point is 00:06:17 but that's definitely one of those matchups we'll be talking about a little bit later on we get into the key matchups of this game. But going into this game against that defense with that many rookies on the offensive lines there after Justin Herbert faced a 55% pressure rate last week is a very scary and less than ideal situation. No doubt. I mean, obviously you lose guys like Jonathan Cooper and John Franklin Myers. They combined last season for 15 and a half sacks, 31 quarterback. How many pressures on top of that, right?
Starting point is 00:06:46 So you lose those two guys. And I think there was hope and belief, you know, in the shows that we did all throughout the off season, you're thinking, well, Hey, Jonah Ellis, former third round pick, all rookie team back at 2024. Like he's looked really good as a rotational guy and he hasn't even been fully healthy. So what could he do if he's fully healthy and starting? He could be something. And then Q Robinson, limited action last year looked really good as a rookie. What could he do with increased opportunity on the defensive line?
Starting point is 00:07:15 You use your top pick on Tyler O'Needem, who by the way, still hasn't played the game. I mean, there's a lot of these factors that are just like, okay, well, it's next man up. the Broncos didn't want to say, hey, we're running it back, but that's exactly what they did on paper. Other than those two guys, and obviously the Jonathan Cooper thing wasn't there, you know, choosing. He's obviously got himself into trouble and we don't know when he's going to come back. So it's a really rough situation in terms of your personnel and banking on player development, which is never a linear thing. It's never just a, hey, this guy's on a positive trajectory.
Starting point is 00:07:49 It's going to keep going up. So these pass rushers are struggling to figure. out Nick Benito is suffering as a result because, you know, how much, how much pressure did Jonathan Cooper take off of Nick Benito by drawing attention and giving Nick those one-on-one opportunities. So I know those guys are ticked off, though. I'll tell you that. I know we're going to talk about those pass rush matchups later, but I know those past rushers are, are upset. That's what I'll say. So I think they're excited to get a bounce back themselves. But I mean, at the expense of this, like you said, the chargers are just so many injuries.
Starting point is 00:08:23 I even though we're bitter rivals, you know what I'm saying? You don't want it to be like, oh, well, the Chargers didn't have, you know, eight offensive linemen in this game. So they want that's not what you want. Like you want to see these teams toe up with best on best, but that's just the reality of the NFL. You're right. Sayre, unfortunately, it's not when you're going to get injuries. It's, uh, or how or if it's when and how you deal with them because unfortunately,
Starting point is 00:08:50 it is a part of the game and the teams that are able to weather those storms. are the teams that are perennally there at the end. And so we got to get into the biggest matchups of this football game, and there is going to be some really, really interesting ones. I talked about one a little bit earlier with that Chargers interior offensive line against that Broncos interior pass rush. We're going to get into those matchups right after this. A new football season brings some big questions.
Starting point is 00:09:21 Who makes the playoffs? Who wins their division? Who takes home the title? Calshe, America's number one prediction, platform lets you trade those predictions in a live market. There are so many things on the market to trade on including the Chargers, and right now, only 38% of the market thinks that the Chargers are going to take down the Broncos at home on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:09:39 You can also trade on player stats in a given week or season-long trades like 27% of people think that Herbert will have a game with two plus rushing touchdowns. The NFL is full of games you plan for all year, but sometimes the best memories come from the games you almost missed.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Game time makes it easy to find tickets, the NFL matchups, you want to see with prices that include fees so you know your total cost up front. You can browse games, see a panoramic view from your seat before you buy, and get tickets in just a couple of taps. Plus, zone deals let you choose the section and let game time choose the seats to help save even more. Whether it's a rivalry game, a matchup featuring a player
Starting point is 00:10:59 you must see in person or an underdog ready to make some noise, game time makes getting to the game simple. Think about the game on the schedule that you absolutely don't want to miss. The Chargers are back home this week for a rivalry game against the Broncos, and you can go to this game
Starting point is 00:11:14 for as low as $60 with all the taxes and fees included. You could potentially get to see the Chargers' first win of the season. Let's hope. Time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on for $20 off your first purchase terms apply again create an account and use code locked on off and we're back here on crossover Thursday Sarah Beniger locked on Broncos I am David drug of myer locked on chargers and we got to get into those biggest matchups that I kind of alluded to some of the matchups are definitely going to help decide this football game sarah and so when you're talking about the biggest matchups in this particular game
Starting point is 00:12:00 going against the o and four Los Angeles Chargers. What is one of those first matchups here looking at? Well, even though I know that these teams are both down, some guys let's talk about a few more injuries because we haven't talked about enough yet, right? Broncos corners against Chargers receivers because no Pat Sartan for this game. Riley Moss was also out the first day of practice this week. So not looking necessarily great for him to play against the Chargers.
Starting point is 00:12:25 It's going to be Jada Baron, most likely. Chris Abrams drained. and then J-Quan Macmillan in the slot per usual. So how do those guys respond to another opportunity, right? Jaday hasn't gotten much this season until Pat went down with injury, played a little bit more against the Rams than we had seen the first two games. But he's looked pretty good. He's looked really physical out there playing with confidence,
Starting point is 00:12:47 which is, I mean, like, David, to say we're thanking, you know, we're thanking the football gods for this one. We're thanking the Lord that Jada played well as an understatement because, look, he has done nothing. I mean, honestly, he's done a few things, but as a first round pick, you expect that guy to play a lot and start, and he's not doing that, which, you know, got good
Starting point is 00:13:07 corners. He's not going to necessarily start. So it's like, why'd you pick him in the first place? Well, here's your opportunity to go show it against the team like the Chargers and Justin Herbert, who he's going to be trying to attack those young corners and exploit them on the outside. Yeah, absolutely. Anytime you're playing
Starting point is 00:13:23 a game against the Broncos and you're not going up against Patrick Sartan, the odds of you winning go exponentially up because that guy is a true difference maker. We're talking about a former defensive player of the year, just an incredible talent. And, you know, he's not going to be out there on Sunday. And I know Riley Moss has kind of had a few issues with the grabs. He's been a little bit too flag happy there, getting his hands on receivers, a little bit too much getting caught for those. So I know that's something to look at. And then McMillan, I know he's been all right, but this is an opportunity for the charges, receivers to really try to have a big game.
Starting point is 00:14:00 And that really has not happened up to this point other than Lab McConkey. And that's another guy, you know, speaking of the injuries, right? That's just the, you know, it's probably not going to make it to play on Sunday. We'll see, right, he was out there doing a little bit off to the side. It did say that, you know, he did not practice, but he was working off to the side. He re-agravated a foot injury when he was trying to suit up and play last week. I mean, it was clear he wasn't close to 100% and his snaps were very much limited as a result of it. But at some point, it's you're not healthy enough to go out there and even help your football team.
Starting point is 00:14:35 And you got to, you know, these guys, the training staffs and organization has to try to protect those guys from themselves sometimes. But as far as the chargers and the biggest matchups, I'm looking at the interior Broncos pass rush versus the very young interior. Chargers offensive line. As I mentioned earlier, Justin Herbert faced a 55% pressure rate on his dropbacks, according to next-gen stats. And so my big key for this matchup is you've got to have a really good interior pass rush protection plan against Zach Allen in particular, who's been going crazy. Three sacks, 19 pressures, Malcolm Roach also tossing in another 10 pressures and a sack.
Starting point is 00:15:16 So the majority of the production that I've seen, at least looking at the box scores and the stats has come from the interior from the Broncos pass rush. So that is a matchup with a, just poor play and inexperience that I'm very, very worried about. Yeah, if things go really poorly for the offense this week, you might as well throw number 99 under center and see what he can do back there because he's a one man wrecking crew. He can do it all. It seems like he blocked a kick against the 49ers, a clutch play. He got three hits on Brock Purdy, who I know still hasn't been sacked yet this year, but you get three hits on the guy. I mean, you're, taking that home as a dub. So Zach Allen has been just outrageous and he's been as good as you
Starting point is 00:15:57 would expect from him. First team all pro. I'm really, really intrigued to see how that matchup that you just outlined goes because we also know that Vance Joseph really likes to attack those double mug looks. We're bringing the linebackers on blitzes. Tala Noah Hufanga has been doing a lot of attacking at the line of scrimmage as well. He's been playing really well. He's been good. The Safeties for the Broncos have been really good. The defense overall missing a lot of tackles this season, which, I mean, it's, it's been really annoying and frustrating. And, you know, it's bit them badly.
Starting point is 00:16:32 But then again, you watch like Kenneth Walker against everybody else. And like, well, you know, 30 minutes. Kenneth Walker isn't so bad. Everybody's. Yeah, he tackles against the guy. So I think that, you know, it's kind of grading on the curve of that first game and being worried about that disastrous situation happening again. but these guys have, they've got to wrap up better.
Starting point is 00:16:51 They've got to be better in the pass rush department. And so I think that the defense, they take it personally whenever they struggle with anything. The way that they broke down at the end of the game against the 49ers last week, I think they are going to take that really personal. And they're going to say, hey, we were held without a sack. We had aims on getting the, not just the franchise record in sacks again, which they've broken two years in a row, but breaking the all-time NFL record in sacks. That ain't going to happen if you go a game without getting one.
Starting point is 00:17:17 Yeah, you got to, you got to, you got a, you got to ratchet it up and they're going to have to make up for lost time. We were talking about the matchup for the Chargers going up against the Broncos corners, but it's also the Chargers are dealing with some injuries in their secondary as well. So the Bronco, that's another matchup I'm looking at is the Chargers defensive backs against the Broncos wide receivers. Two of the Chargers, three starting corners, Dante Jackson and Cam Hart are on the injury report. Corton Sutton's been off to a little bit of a slow start, but this might be a get-right matchup, But as, you know, he's had some pretty big games against the Chargers.
Starting point is 00:17:51 And unfortunately, the Chargers don't really have very much depth. You could potentially see a seventh round pick and special teams gunner Dean Leonard who might get out there. Who was also limited himself. Also got an undrafted free agent corner and Rodney Shelley who might get some time. And Derman James is looking like he's not going to play in this game. He has a hamstring injury and he was listed as week to week. And so with all those injuries and then also having to try to stop Jell and Waddle from getting anything easy. It's not going to be a very fun matchup.
Starting point is 00:18:21 And these guys are going to have to step up. And it's going to be a real test on Sunday. Yeah. The next thing you know, these teams are going to be missing letters from their names. Like, I mean, what the heck is going on? Yeah, you're right. It's the Broncos receivers. So they just, they just, they're dealing with a lot right now.
Starting point is 00:18:40 I don't know what it is. Like you mentioned Cortland Sutton off to a slow start. I would also characterize it as a concerning. start. Like I'm genuinely concerned about what we've seen from Cortland so far this season. He just doesn't look the same. He doesn't look. He doesn't look right out there. So I also am hoping for a bounce back game, not just to get at the chargers, but to just see like, hey, let's see some life in Cortland Sutton out there. He's, he hasn't been the same guy. And then obviously they just put Pat Bryant, you know, on the injury report this week after he suffered
Starting point is 00:19:12 an ankle injury. So he's not going to play in this game. Troy Franklin maybe stepping up in his place. Mims getting a little bit more acclimated after his first game back last week. But then Waddle, yeah, the big game against Jacksonville, that's really all we've seen from him. And that's the Broncos own fault. They're not force feeding him the ball. They're not doing enough to make sure they get him the ball. I've been saying, hey, minimum eight to 10 targets per game for this guy. Like get Waddle the ball.
Starting point is 00:19:39 He traded all that to go get him. Yeah. So hopefully this is a game where they emphasize that, but also just getting that running it. It's so much. It's so much in one game that's like, well, Bo Nix needs to get right. And Coralyn Sutton needs to get right. And the past game needs to be better. And now the Broncos also their run game needs to be better.
Starting point is 00:19:56 So it's just, yeah, it's look at us. Look at us here in week five. We got all these questions. We don't have all the players even. And somebody's got to go out there and win a game. Yes, they do. And we're going to try to tell you exactly how each one of these teams need to get that victory. And we're going to tell you all about it right after this.
Starting point is 00:20:16 Welcome to your most rewarding NFL season ever, only on Fandle. How rewarding are we talking? More rewarding than a touchdown with time expiring. And we are back here on crossover Thursday and Sarah. We got to get into the keys to victory for each one of these football teams. And we'll go ahead and kick things off with the Chargers this time. I'll give you my first key. And that is get a lead early. The Chargers absolutely need to get a lead. They just are not really built to be the chaser. They're just not equipped with their offense and really not having found that rhythm yet, especially playing from behind against this defensive front. Just not something that you can afford.
Starting point is 00:22:54 Broncos have had some crazy slow starts this year. They're averaging 3.3 first half points, three points or less in the first half in three or four games. If they give you a chance to build a lead, say they absolutely have to jump on that opportunity. What about the Broncos? What's the first key to victory for the Broncos? Well, it's really similar for the Broncos. Like they want to show competent offense early on in a game.
Starting point is 00:23:17 You want to show some balance, but you also need to get your quarterback back on track. I think that's the key in this game, right first and foremost. And I was going to say, David, I mean, are you sure? Are you sure you want the charters to get out to an early lead against the Broncos? That seems to be when the lights come on for everybody on this team. But you know what? That's why I think the Broncos kind of approach the game like, hey, go in there. The first snap of the game, you're already down 14 to nothing.
Starting point is 00:23:41 That's kind of how they have to approach it because that seems to be when they start playing well. It's like, hey, your back's against the wall. You got no choice but to go out there and score. And you need to get two point conversions. And like they're doing all this math quickly in their head of like, well, if we score here and we get a two point or here, then all of a sudden they start playing fast. They play loose.
Starting point is 00:23:59 They're making accurate plays. Bow Nix is playing, making plays off script. So I want to see all of that from the start. And honestly, like this is going to sound so dumb on a podcast over professionals. But like, I want to see those guys having some flipping fun out there, man. Like they don't look like they're having fun that when they're struggling and I get it when you're you're struggling and you're getting beat and it's hot like it's not necessarily fun tell us about it guys having fun you know I love it I love that as well that's an attitude is an effort thing but it does translate right like can't forget like these guys are making millions of dollars to play a kid's game just remember that take a second remember that you get to be one of the cherished few that get to go out there and do this at the highest level. and everybody gets to go watch you.
Starting point is 00:24:47 My next one is win first downs. The Broncos are struggling on first down, partly because they haven't really been able to run the ball too well. You know, the Chargers have done pretty good job against the run so far this year. They got to keep bringing it. I got to keep bringing the heat and run defense per true media. The Broncos are averaging just 3.9 yards on first downs, 3.9 yards per carry on first downs.
Starting point is 00:25:07 And they rank 25th in yards per play on first down, 27th in yards per play according to True Media. Chargers offense also has to be better on first down against this defense. They rank 27th in yards per play on first downs. Being better on first down on offense and defense is going to go a long way and setting yourself up to try to pick up a victory on Sunday. That's absolutely huge. I need to check and see you just reminded me of a stat too because going into the 49ers game,
Starting point is 00:25:35 there was a really fascinating statistic about the Broncos. If they run for three yards or less on first downs, they threw it 100% of the time on second and seven or longer. That was an interesting little trend that they were creating. I don't know if that held against the 49ers. I don't know if it's exactly the same, but I thought that was fascinating to your point about the Chargers winning first downs, which really plays into what the Broncos need to do as well,
Starting point is 00:26:00 is winning that first down to get in the long, down and distance situations to let that pass rush be unleashed, right? Let Nick Benito eat. Let's see a good game from Jonah Ellis finally this season. And let's see Zach Allen out there wrecking this game. If your pass rush is dictating things at the line of scrimmage, first of all, if your run defense is dictating things, you're going to be able to rush the quarterback.
Starting point is 00:26:23 And you're going to be able to get these guys right where you want them, playing into your strength. And that helps those young corners on the back end as well. Yeah, we've talked about many times it's earning the right to rush the passer. And you've got to do your job on early downs to be able to put yourself in position to go rush the passer on third down. My last one here before we get out of year is the, the young guys have to step up.
Starting point is 00:26:44 Even the best case scenario, health-wise, with the Chargers are going to have to rely on a bunch of first and second-year players. The Chargers could get their rookie speedster Brennan Thompson back, which would be huge because Lab McConkey is not practicing. If the Chargers, rookie or young players do not step up and play some of their best football on Sunday, they're not going to win this football game. Yeah, I think that's huge. I didn't know he was going to be coming back potentially this week, but I'm interested to see how he does. Mike McDaniel, I know, was so excited to draft him in the first place. I was sitting in the draft room, pounding the table for the guy. So I know he'd be excited to have him out there.
Starting point is 00:27:22 And look, I think on the Broncos side, the biggest key to me, and I've been saying this all years, like you traded all this for Jalen Waddle, go make him the focal point, go make him the center of gravity, go make him everything, this, the gravitational force of your offense. Like, let's see a full commitment to Jalen Waddle. Everything else feeds off that. The run game is going to benefit because Jalen Waddle is attracting so much attention. The Broncos facing light boxes more than almost any other team. Top five, top six in the NFL this year in terms of six or less in the box.
Starting point is 00:27:56 So why aren't you running the ball? Well, I don't understand it. Let's see it. But get Jalen Waddle the ball one way or the other and let your running game feed off of that. I think Waddle is the key to unlocking this offense's potential, which we know is good. Like I believe in Bow Nix. I believe fully. In Bow Nix, I am going to sit here and take the arrows, the flaming arrows on behalf of
Starting point is 00:28:17 Bo Nix because I know everybody's flaming the guy right now. I know everybody's saying he's a bus. He's not any good. His yards per attempt is waiting around. Same thing with Justin Herbert. Believe it. So you guys get it, right? I mean, it's like, it's so frustrating when it's like, hey, when we've seen what the best
Starting point is 00:28:31 of these guys can do, when we've seen it and we've seen it not just once, but multiple times. And even for stretches of time and even in the biggest of moments, there's no way you can tell that he can't do it in week five. There's no way you can't, you know, I just, I think that we're to a degree, it feels like we're taking some crazy pills here. It's like, hey, this guy can do it. You got to believe that he can do it. You got to believe if you're Broncos country. So, hopefully this is the game he gets on track. And I think Waddle's going to be the guy to help him do it. Well, we will see which one of these quarterbacks, Justin Herbert or Bo Nick, steps up to help their team pick up a much needed victory on Sunday. But that's going to wrap things up for this
