Marvin Mims exited Wednesday's practice with an apparent groin injury.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton isn't overly concerned about.
as a team is getting ready for kickoff against the Tennessee Titans in just about a week and a half.
Welcome into another episode, Lockdown Broncos, your daily Denver Broncos podcast, part of the Lockdown,
podcast network, your team every day.
What we're going to go through here on today's show, we're going to talk about Marvin Mims,
the apparent groin injury there.
But we're really going to take a deeper look here at the Broncos practice squad,
particularly at wide receiver, some of the offensive additions as well as the Broncos,
deciding to bring back Sam Ellinger, who had offers to be on the 53 men roster of several.
several other teams, but he wanted to stay in the Mile High City.
We'll look at that and also Lavelle Bailey in the defensive side of the ball,
several players who can continue to develop for Sean Payton here on this roster.
Get all that here on today's episode of the show.

Sarah, obviously when the notification went out that Marvin Mims left practice for the Broncos on
Wednesday, just a week and a half before regular season anticipation against the Tennessee
Titans begins. Definitely some eyebrows were raised a little bit. Everyone goes into a panic,
but Broncos head coach, Sean Payton says it's nothing that they're overly concerned with.
Yeah, that wording of that still concerns me a little bit.
Cody because not being overly concerned means that you are at least a little concerned,
right?
I mean, I don't know.
That's how I read that.
But I mean, any groin injury to a player whose job is to be fast, I worry about that.
I just, whether it's any, it doesn't matter what sport it is.
You know, your job is to go out there and be fast.
And that's what Marvin Mims is best at.
And so if you're dealing with groin, hamstring, high ankle, you know, anybody who has
to make quick, sharp movements or accelerate all the time, like,
that worries me. I'm just going to say it.
And I know we don't want to be pressing the panic button or anything right now.
If the team's not overly concerned,
hey,
then maybe we shouldn't be overly concerned either.
But it was enough to,
I think,
get an Adam Schaefter post.
So I don't know.
I just,
I don't like it.
I don't.
And I don't think the listeners will like it either.
It's very concerning considering the team,
you know,
obviously just assembled its 53-man roster.
They traded Devon Veil away.
They've been planning on all these guys being helped.
at least the start of the regular season here.
So for Mims to be dealing with anything,
it not only raises concerns for the offense,
but also who the heck will return punts.
Yeah, I think that's definitely something to keep an eye on.
And I don't think we've ever kind of been broached to the question of,
like if Marvin Mims were ever get hurt,
who's going to be the backup punt returner?
I mean,
back in the day,
we used to rely on Bryce Callahan as kind of that emergency option here.
Maybe Riley Moss for the Broncos could be an emergency option in terms of that
reliable.
I feel like in terms of fielding it, or it could be Tyler Badey potentially.
Could one of your running backs do that?
I don't know if you want to put any other receivers back there to be able to do that.
So I'd say the safe bet would be probably a running back or a defensive back at that point.
Please not Pat Sertan.
I know that was floated out at one point a few years ago.
Let's not ever get back into that.
I feel you on your concern, Sarah.
And certainly I think Broncos country when it comes to injuries happening a week before the regular season begins or a few days.
and ironically enough against the Tennessee Titans coming up.
Remember, the last time the Broncos opened up week one against Tennessee,
Jerry Judy had something happen in practice.
He was able to play in that game.
But Cortland Sutton had the AC joint injury that held him out of that game.
And didn't the Broncos lose Von Miller before that game as well to a season-ending injury?
So, yeah, I understand the cause for concern here.
Though with Marvin, with it being a groin, certainly I think it's something you follow along with, right?
you check the severity of it.
It doesn't sound like it's too serious at this point for him and where the Broncos are at.
So I think they're going to be cautious with how they work him back,
considering, as you mentioned, he is a fast guy.
He is, you know, his position requires him to turn, twist.
I'm not overly concerned about it right now.
Now, if he goes into practice next week and is not participating,
then I might be a little concerned because it really kind of leads us into our discussion point
about the practice squad here.
And I think this Marvin Mims injury is a great reminder here as to having a plan or needing to have a plan.
And I think when you look at the wide receiver room specifically on the practice squad,
Sarah, they didn't bring back or they weren't able to bring back every single undrafted rookie free agent they had on their training camp roster.
It was a little puzzling to me.
I'll admit, I was surprised.
I thought at least Joaquin Davis, Courtney Jackson, I thought Jurewan Newton, at least one of those three guys would be back.
And I even thought Kiree's Rowan would be back potentially.
neither of those guys came back.
But the wide receivers you do have Michael Bandy, A.T. Perry.
A.T. Perry, obviously I think is the more infatuating name and topic of the conversation here.
But Michael Bandy can't do the things that Marvin Mims does.
So no disrespect to Bandy.
But every year I ask myself, I understand the familiarity that Joe Lombardi and the Broncos have here with Bandy.
But what is Bandy doing for you in the event you have an injury?
You need to call someone up because he has not been a guy since.
this time of being in Denver with all the injuries they've had, they've never called them up to
the game day roster. To me, it's like, can that spot go to someone else that could actually
develop and play one day? That's what I think too. That's exactly my opinion about it. And it's
nothing against Michael Bandy, but it's exactly what you said. Circumstantially, if you need a
wide receiver and a guy that's on your practice squad and has been for multiple years can't get
called up or isn't good enough to get called up, then why is he on there? He must give a really good
look for the scout team or he, I don't know, Cody.
I mean, there's got to be something that he really does well on the practice field or in
the film room that contributes to the overall, you know, behind the scenes sort of deal.
But I agree.
I feel like it's time to discuss that because he was placed on the practice squad over a guy
who did return punts in the, you know, the preseason all throughout the preseason was
Courtney Jackson returning punts.
And when Courtney got waived, he clears waivers.
The Broncos wanted to bring him back.
But they didn't offer him right.
way. I think that I can't remember if it was Luca Evans or Chris Thomason who reported that, Cody,
but they said that the Broncos didn't offer him right away. And then he took the offer that he
got from Seattle to go beyond their practice squad. So that's at this point, that ship has sailed.
And none of the other guys were good enough for the Broncos to bring back or they just didn't
feel like they had the room on their practice squad. They kept, you know, as we'll talk about 84
linebackers and 93 defensive backs on the practice squad. But that's the, that's the thing with
is that you kept five receivers on the 53.
We all thought it was going to be six.
You got a great trade for Devon Valle,
totally fine, but you have to supplement that on your practice squad.
And unfortunately, you've got the Yeti or the, you know,
the whatever it is the mythical creature that wanders around in the forest,
A.T. Perry and Michael Bandy, who has never been, I mean,
he's never been called up.
Like you said, I think that's the best way to put it.
We can bag on Bandy all we want here.
that doesn't do any good.
The reality is they've needed receivers in recent years,
and he's never been called up.
And there's got to be a reason for that.
And so why does he continue to get that job?
I'm a little frustrated, Cody, because of the timing of this.
Like you said, it could not be worse timing.
You just assembled your roster.
You just assembled the practice squad.
Now your all pro return man goes down in a practice.
You're not overly concerned about it.
Okay.
Well, if he's playing week one, then you can say,
hey, you know what, next time, chill out, man.
But you know what?
It's right before week one.
And you know what?
We're about to hit the ground running.
So I don't like it at all.
Well, the milk hasn't expired yet, right?
So, I mean, we're cautiously awaiting that opening kickoff day next week.
Obviously, the Broncos will practice here on Thursday.
So the question is, do we see Marvin back out?
Maybe that'll alleviate our concerns a little bit.
But that's obviously here to be determined here.
We still have to get to practice this morning here in the Valley for that to be
the case here, but something that we're monitoring. But for Sean Payton, I feel like to address it,
like he didn't meet with the media on Wednesday, for him to address it to our good friend
Leggy kind of off to the side and as kind of like a pool report, kind of signals that, you know,
it's not too bad. And Sean has been pretty open. If it's something they're concerned about,
you know, he's kind of indicated like, yeah, you know, we'll see. But I'm with you on this.
I think there's a reason to be concerned here. I am not overly worried about it right now,
Sarah, once again, I think once we get to practice, we'll get some more clarity. Once I get there,
I'll shoot you a text update as well to say, hey, MIMS on or off the field. We'll see where things
are at here. But Broncos Country, please let us know your thoughts on the Broncos wide receiver
room. Obviously, this injury to Marvin Mims and what the practice squad looks like for you. Are you
disappointed in the overall wide receiver depth on the practice squad? Let us know your thoughts here
on today's episode of the show here. But Broncos Country, the offensive side of the ball, got a lot of love from
Sean Payton and the practice squad is a great indication of that, including the return of
Saba as he decided to opt out of not joining two other teams, 53-man rosters, to stay with the Denver
Broncos.
Why is that?
What's going on in Denver?
We'll discuss that on today's episode of the show.

The Denver Broncos were able to bring back Sam Ellinger on the practice squad.
And you know what he turned down some 53 man offers to do it.
The practice squad took shape with everybody that made up the 16 player practice squad.
Man, they all were with the team during training camp.
Pretty crazy the retention this Broncos team has had.
And we're going to talk all about it on today's episode.
But first, we want your feedback.
We want to hear from you, the listener, the everydayers here at Lockdown Broncos, your favorite podcast, right?
We want you to go to locked on podcasts.com slash survey and take a survey for us.

We thank you in advance for helping us out,
letting us know what you, the listener,
love, don't like about the show,
a lot of different other things you get to sound off in that survey.
But Cody, let's talk about the players,
the Broncos brought back offensively for the practice squad.
Of course, the most notable name being quarterback Sam Ellinger,
played well in the preseason, really did,
made a lot of plays out there and really showed well in the Saints game.
I think the notable story, though, is what came from Jordan Schultz initially, which is that
Sam, he's turned down multiple 53-man offers, which later we found out are from quote-unquote
contending teams to join their 53-man roster.
So I'm interested by that, and I'm interested in your take of why he would do that.
I mean, does this mean that he views the Broncos as a contending team to turn down to other
potential contenders?
I mean, I think that's got to mean something there.
on a serious note here with sam ellinger i think the connection inside that quarterback room is very
very important right davis web has done a tremendous job as the q b's coach passing game
coordinator but i think it's also the relationships that obviously beau and jarrant have formed
with sam i mean not to mention the off-the-field aspect of these guys and their eyes like
zach wilson was very much part of that they were at his wedding this off season
congrats to zach wilson there but sam was also now part of that group as well
And I just think that there's this vibe.
And Sean Payton certainly hasn't been shy about talking about how he feels about Sam
and what Sam brings to the table.
I think so much of it is, okay, I mean, yeah, I could go to some teams' 53-man roster
and play there.
But he wants to stay, I think, where he likes the environment.
He likes the playbook.
He likes the scheme.
But he's also going to be taking care of here because what did we even see when Ben Danucci was on the roster at one point?
Sarah, we saw him elevated the game day roster because you know what that did for him?
Cha-ching, you get a little bit of a paycheck bonus there when you do that.
So I know Sean is going to find a way to do that here for Sam and the event,
something were to happen and you need another quarterback.
You need a guy who knows your system versus bringing in a guy who is with a different team in the summer
that had learned an entirely different system.
We know the Broncos' offense is complex as it is.
Sean's system, the way he likes to run it.
Mike McGlinchie even acknowledged that.
It's not easy to pick up.
So you want a guy that's comfortable with that.
I think Sam is comfortable with his situation right now.
he's mentioned he's been with, you know, a handful of teams or, you know, he's been on a team.
Like even the Indianapolis coach, he's been on some good quarterbacks there.
The question for him is, where is my situation?
What's better for me right now?
And he feels like it's clearly Denver, which I think is a great indication here of this coaching staff and where this Broncos team is headed.
You don't believe us, believe the players that are choosing to stay here.
I think another thing that was very interested in too about this practice squad,
especially on the offensive side of the ball, Sarah, a lot of the guys that were,
already on the roster here this summer. I mean, every player, 16 players signed. All 16 of them
were in Denver this summer. You're not bringing in anybody from the outside, and not a lot of
your players outside of a couple got claimed on waivers. Audrick Estimate going obviously
to the Philadelphia Eagles. Good for him. He's signing there. Damari Mathis got claimed by the
Carolina Panthers. He's going to go reunite with his Euro ever. Okay, good for him at this point.
But you're bringing in continuity of guys you feel like can continue to develop, minus the thing
what you and I talked about with Michael Bandy here.
Who on the offensive side of the ball in terms of all the players there?
Are you most interested in terms of seeing like, okay,
the developmental track is there for this guy?
Well, it's got to be tight end, Caleb Loner, right?
I think when you are able to bring a guy like that back,
you and I talked about how badly he struggled in the preseason.
And I think that's okay for him to struggle like that.
I mean, he played 56 snaps there at Utah and really didn't get a lot of a chance
to develop while he was at the college level because he made the last
minute switch to football from basketball.
And so now you get an opportunity.
He's cleared waivers, which everyone really expected at this point because of how
raw he looked in the preseason.
And you get an opportunity to, you know, let that marinate there on the practice
field and work with this guy and really hopefully see that vision come to fruition.
Maybe next off season, maybe we'll see him take that big step forward.
I don't know what will end up happening, but he'll be more comfortable with the offense.
Obviously, he'll be more comfortable with his surroundings.
He'll be, you know, who I've gone up against arguably the best defense in the NFL every day at practice.
Like, it's a really valuable year for Caleb Loner.
And of course, I know like a lot of these rookies that are coming in after the transfer portal rules are different and the pandemic things.
Like, he's an older rookie.
So the clock is a ticking, as Sean Peyton said.
But yeah, maybe next offseason something clicks for him or maybe he does get a chance at some point later this year.
We'll see what happens.
But I think his development is probably what we're most excited about in,
terms of those guys as well as I'll say it I mean I still am fascinated by A.T. Perry.
Yeah. The Bronf won't quit him. So why would I? Like I know that people kind of want us to stop
talking about him sometimes and I get it. I mean, he is like the gosh, why can't I think of the name of
the Yetty? The aboundable snowman. Bigfoot. Yeah, Bigfoot. Exactly. Yeah, A.T. Perry has kind of
become like this mythical creature at some point that we're like, when I have seen him. See him. Yeah,
he's been out there. He was on the field for the last preseason. So those two guys,
guys to me would be the two that I'd be most interested in their continued development.
Yeah, and I think I'm, I agree with you there. I would say two other names that interest me the
most right now. Just from a roster standpoint, nothing to do with development, but I think having a
vested veteran in Calvin Throckmorton is good flexibility. I also think with the news of Michael
Burton being done for the year, you're still not there with Nate Adkins as he's coming back
from that tight rope ankle surgery. You have veteran fullback Adam Prentice on the on the practice squad,
whereas you do get three standard game day to practice squad elevations.
Like that's the one thing I like about the practice squad is you're going to see a handful of
these guys promoted to the 53 just for game day, right?
Not necessarily like, hey, the Broncos have made a roster move.
This guy's now been promoted.
It's, hey, we're designating you here on Saturday.
You're going to be called up.
You'll probably be inactive or you could play depending on where we have a numbers need
or a numbers disadvantage.
So I imagine that we will see Adam Prentice early on in the season.
And there is even a chance the Broncos may not even.
even need a fullback for the first week or two.
They could do different stuff personnel-wise.
So it just gives you ultimate flexibility when it comes to that side of the ball.
Though I feel like the practice squad, the game day promotions, those elevations,
I feel like they're going to be something that we're going to apply more to the defensive side of the ball.
Obviously, with some concerns at the linebacker depth here full of the Broncos, Denver kept a handful of linebackers here,
which could give them the ultimate flexibility going into the regular season.
We'll highlight the Broncos, defensive practice squad additions.

The Denver Broncos made some tough decisions over the week, formulating their 53 man
roster, but it's even tougher to try to figure out the numbers game for that.
But luckily, there's retention and there's familiarity all across the practice squad,
as Denver formulated, their 16-man practice squad, follow and cut down date.
And the Broncos defense has a lot of flexibility and some good experience across the board.
Thank you once again, Broncos country for making us your first listen, however you choose
to do so here.
Sir, let's go over some of the defensive names here.
I think when the 53-man roster got set and obviously an undraft.
guy in Karen A. Reid made the team. We factored in the injury history of
Drake Greenlaw, Alex Singleton, where he's at at this juncture of his career. And we said,
wow, they made the bold decision to go with four on the active instead of five. Well,
it turns out Sean Peyton, George Payton, they had a plan all along and it worked out because
the Broncos, they brought back quite a few linebackers to their practice squad, where they
have that flexibility to elevate them three times and eventually potentially putting them on
the 53 at some point down the line if needed.
There's a lot of flexibility here for this team.
A lot of flexibility.
Jordan Turner is back.
Garrett Wallow, the veteran is back.
And Lavelle Bailey, shockingly, Cody, probably the biggest stunner amongst the final
cuts for the Broncos.
I think everybody had him on their 53-man roster projection.
And that's largely due to the fact that he was running with the starting defense while
Alex Singleton and Dre Greenlaw were nursing injuries throughout the course of training camps.
So to see him get cut was a bit of a shocker.
But I don't think also that anyone was overly surprised that he made it through waivers at the same time.
Because he's kind of one of those guys that he's like a Broncos guy.
Like the Broncos.
And I guess to a degree, right, Darren Moji in New York and you've got friends in high places elsewhere.
So to a degree, it's a little surprising.
But man, to have him back on the practice squad, I think we will see him shuffled up rather soon.
and that's a huge advantage for the Broncos because we talked about their depth.
We talked about the fact that, man, they had two guys claimed off of waivers.
They traded Devon Veil.
You lost a couple of guys to other teams practice squads.
So the depth of this team was not just something we were talking about.
It's real.
Other teams saw it on tape.
But to get LaVelle Bailey back out of all of them, I mean, I don't know.
I think that's a huge win for this team.
Yeah, it is.
And look, I think it's so much of that risk-reward factor.
For Denver, obviously, last year,
John Payton told the story earlier this week where they were really on the phone with Lavelle Bailey for hours trying to negotiate, trying to get him to Denver because there was five or six other teams that were interested in him.
Well, he makes the 53 initially last year, but then really the day after he made the 53, the Broncos waived him.
He had to go through waivers so they can make another move.
And we were sitting here like, wait, what was the reason for this?
Why did the Broncos do this?
He made it back onto the practice squad there.
So I think I think from their standpoint operating, they thought that.
that, okay, hey, Lavelle is a guy that we feel like can get through waivers.
We'll bring him back.
It's not an indictment on him.
I think it was more of a sign that probably those other teams that were negotiating with
Karen E. Redu had a really good training camp, had a good preseason campaign.
They were worried a little bit that maybe he was going to get claimed by another team.
And so they didn't run that risk, kind of how they didn't run that risk last year with
Lavel Bailey.
So I think that had more to do with it than anything.
And certainly we're going to see that flexibility here.
I also found it, you know, the couple of guys they brought back at the cornerback spot developmentally,
Jaden Robinson, who you and I pinpointed as someone we liked.
Quentin Newsom is a guy that they also brought back who was on the practice squad last year.
I found it, though, the interesting one was Delarian Turner Yale, the veteran,
returning on the practice squad after being waived.
I like this for Denver.
I like this for Turner Yale, who's done so much work behind the scenes to try to come back from that brutal ACL injury he had.
I think having him on the practice squad will be a little bit of a benefit here to the Broncos
because it's going to be he and Keedron Smith.
I think they'll give that offense some good looks on scout team.
Absolutely.
And they'll give your special teams depth that you can call upon whenever it's needed
because those two guys were constantly in frame when the Broncos were doing, you know,
kickoff coverage, punk coverage during the preseason, right?
So we've seen those guys and what they can do on special teams and they are effective in that way.
and I think being on the practice squad being brought back,
it's a sign that Darren Rizzi also likes what they bring to the table in that regard
because you kind of look at a number of roster moves through the lens of,
okay, you brought in a big time assistant coach like Darren Rizzi,
these guys that they're keeping, obviously he's in favor of that.
And he's not the final sign off on the roster by any means,
but I think they do ask for his input certainly when it comes to guys like that.
I was a little surprised, Cody, that they didn't leave a spot open.
And I guess there's still time for that.
to happen. But I think the team is
bullish on Jeremy Croshaw.
They did not add a punter, which was you and I
had kind of a little theory going about
okay, add a punter to the practice squad,
hedge your bets a little bit.
The Broncos are going to go
with the unhinged approach.
They're just saying, you know what? Let's let the rookie
sink or swim. And I don't mind it.
But at the same time, I think there's, that's
something to definitely monitor here as we get into
the regular season. Yeah. No,
and it could change because even shot
said there's the first couple of weeks there's a lot of movement from your 53 your practice squad there
could be things that change i mean this could change after week one against tennessee i mean
depending on how crawshaw does that could lead to them sticking with him or they can lead to
them bringing in competition from after week one onto the practice squad and also keep in mind to
broncos country when you when you see it on the waiver wire sometimes where you hear us talk about
it the broncos bring in a punter for a tryout most of the time it's
not because they're looking at trying to bring in a punter.
It's if they're facing a left-footed punter, they'll bring in a left-footed punter
for a day for trout.
So I know that we may see that and someone's going to be like, oh, you know, here's the
cross-shaw replacement or challenger or things like that.
It could end up being the case, but more than likely it's not going to be Sean Peyton
kind of reaffirmed his commitment to the rookie saying, we're going to live with the growing
pains.
And they're doing some things in practice as well in terms of simulating looks because a lot
of it was attributed to maybe the first punt, not
being great, right? And he made the comparison of being at bat.
Like Sean obviously watches a lot of baseball too.
So in practice, they'll be doing something randomly.
They'll throw out in a punt period there saying, hey, we're going to punt,
even though it's not the designated special teams period there, just to see how he does
there. And I'd say from what I've seen so far, good in practice.
But then again, we've seen a lot of good in practice, not so much good in the games.
I mean, when you're averaging 25 yards per punt in the preseason, you look at six
puns that he had, 262 total yards.
It was like a net average of 43, but his average overall per punt was 25 yards.
Sarah, that's not a good number.
That's concerning here.
So this is something I think we'll continue to monitor and watch as time goes on.
But, yeah, I mean, realistic, I'd say the biggest surprise for me out of everything on
the practice squad probably had more to do with the fact that they returned 16 players
that were on their training camp roster versus them adding someone.
someone from the outside. It really kind of seems like right now the Broncos are focused on
player development. We want guys who've been in the building and we really care about the outside
noise. I found that to be probably the most interesting part of this whole practice squad formulation.
Absolutely. That means that out of the 90 man roster that you have this off season that you're
keeping 69 guys. So really nice stuff by the Denver Broncos there with the 53 man roster plus
the 16 player practice squad. And then of course a couple of guys on short term I are. So it's even more
than that, Cody. They've retained over 70 players on this team. I mean, it's, it's pretty nuts when you
think about it because they were, what, 86% anyway from last year's team at the highest retention rate
on the roster in the entire NFL. And now you come out of training camp. You lose some guys,
but you still are bringing back over 70 players who were a part of your 90-man roster. I mean,
it's really good stuff from George Payton, Sean Payton, player development, coaching staff,
scouting department. Everybody involved deserves to probably go out and celebrate a little bit
after seeing how they assembled this thing and what it looks like going into this season.
