Fandul.com to get
started. We've got a lot to break down here on
today's episode. The show is the team now shifts their
focus to preparing for the Atlanta
Falcons and Kirk Cousins.
What is it that they do in Atlanta?
They swag surf. Hopefully there's going to be
no swag surfing in Denver
here this upcoming week. The Broncos look
into do a little bit of surfing of their own. Maybe Nick
Benito on a surfboard sack celebration. That might
be something we look at. But we're going to wrap things
up on today's show by talking about some roster
shuffling that could happen this week,
as early as today.
Some guys may be coming back that you are going to have to shuffle a little bit on the 53-man roster.
We'll also talk about whether or not this season is already a success for the Broncos,
considering what was painted about them in the offseason.
But we'll kick things off by highlighting Bo Nix,
who certainly demonstrated some growth throughout the last handful of weeks.
Has he now made a strong case for NFL rookie of the year?
Sarah kicking it off with you, I certainly think he has, but let's dive deeper into it.
Yeah, he's made a really good case for NFL offensive rookie of the year, Cody.
and I think that anybody that would say differently is lying to themselves or to their listeners or the people that they write for, you know, their audience.
Essentially, I think you'd have to be completely ignoring reality to say that Bo Nix hasn't been an NFL offensive rookie of the year candidate.
Now, I know that it's, it's been tough sledding at times.
Those first two weeks, he throws four interceptions, no touchdowns.
Everybody buried him at that point.
The eulogies were written.
Bo Nicks' career was over after that Pittsburgh Steelers game.
but by some, you know, miracle, by some stroke of, you know,
the football gods came swooping in, Cody.
Games have been played since week two, you know, from week three on,
Bo Nix, believe it or not, has, he's miraculously improved.
And he's seemingly gotten better every week.
I mean, he's still made mistakes.
He's still had rookie, you know, moments.
He's been compared to Ferris Bueller by his own head coach.
And you see that on display at times where, you know,
Bo is just very confident in the way that he's playing.
But is he a rookie of the year candidate at this point?
I mean, absolutely.
When you watch this team play, I think that that narrative would be getting pushed so much harder,
had the Broncos been able to finish the deal against Kansas City on Sunday.
And as it stands right now, I don't know that, I mean, I think it's fairly close between
Bo Nix and Jaden Daniels.
But besides that, I don't know that anybody else right now.
Maybe Tyrone Tracy out there, the New York Giants, he's playing.
pretty well.
But outside of those two guys, Cody,
who else is really making the strongest case right now?
Well, you think about all the conversation too about
Caleb Williams at the beginning of the season, you know,
and now all of a sudden the conversation that they're having in Chicago
is that that staff is discussing well,
not to bench him for Tyson Baygett.
Like, what is happening here?
Just another example of the NFL quarterback carousel
and how bad teams keep pretty good, promising players who have talent bad.
Hopefully that's not the end there for Kayla Williams in Chicago.
Go check out lockdown.
as you want to know more Caleb Williams conversation.
But in terms of Jaden Daniels, obviously, I don't think anybody envisioned the start that he was going to have to the season.
And certainly I put something out a little bit early.
Like after he threw that hell, Mary throw, I think it was just, I was a victim of the moment.
I was like, all right, hey, like Jaden Daniels, that locks up the offensive rookie of the year or the rookie of the year award for him there.
Pump the brakes on that.
I was wrong for doing that.
Bow Nick certainly has made strides going forward.
And when you look at maybe the tail of the tape here a little bit, part of me wonders how much is at the end of the year when the vote is going to be determined.
how much record is going to play into this.
And certainly I understand that is going to be the case for the most part.
Most of these awards, like you look at MVP.
Joe Burrow right now in the NFL has probably the best MVP case of anybody,
but he's not going to get it because the Bengals right now, they're losing.
And it's a little weird to see.
At what point do we throw record out and just say, hey, look, impact what he's been able to do.
Like qualifications there, you know, most valuable player to a team.
If you take Burrow off the Bengals, they're terrible probably.
They're probably bottom of the barrel.
They may not win a game without Joe Burrell.
But you also factor it into like the rookie of the year conversation.
These are young guys, Sarah, where it's like, hey, as a rookie quarterback,
you already have all the odds stacked against you because the microscope is going to be big on where you're at.
Jaden Daniels has been terrific so far.
Bo Nix has grown so much and has been very, very solid.
We came away from the Kansas City game convinced, hey, he won the job.
He is the Broncos quarterback of the future.
I think Broncos country is on board with that as well.
When you look at the tail of the tape, Bo Nix, 15 total touchdowns on the year for him,
this season. Jaden Daniels at 13. Broncos at 5 and 5.
Commanders, they're at 7 and 3 and 3. And they're the 6th seat right now at 7 and 3
and the NFC. It's very top heavy over there. Nix's completion percentage. It's gotten better.
I think over the course since that week one, week two stretch there.
63.6% completion percentage as of late. It's drastically improved from where it was.
And Jaden Daniels, 68.7. So much of this two, we can go back to the Hell Mary game.
If Jaden doesn't hit that, I mean, the Broncos within one game of being that conversation,
being determined by record.
I think that Bo and Jaden, to be honest with it,
I think it should be between these two guys specifically.
And I think you should let just play out and see how it goes in the year.
I think it was impressive what Bo did against Kansas City,
the number one defense right now in the NFL.
I'm very, very curious for your thoughts on this.
I do think that Bo has a terrific case to be made.
And in my opinion,
rookie of the year should not be determined based on record.
No, but I think a lot of it has to do with exposure, doesn't it?
And the Broncos, they have not been in the national spotlight.
a ton this year and there's still a lot of people who are kind of just now catching up on what
Bo Nix has been doing since that week two game. Like I said, the first two weeks, you kind of wrote
these guys off. The Broncos had that big matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers that was supposed
to be Russell Wilson's return to Denver. That was one of the last times other than this Chiefs game
that the national spotlight was really on Denver for any reason whatsoever. So what people are
seeing now is kind of their first exposure to Bo Nix, but he won NFL offensive rookie of the month
in October, Cody, which I think is our best indicator yet that rookie of the year is on the table
for him because whoever's voting on that, the Associated Press or whatever, obviously people are
taking notice. That wasn't a fan voted award like the rookie of the week is. It wasn't where people
are just going in and spamming, hey, let's give this guy rookie of the week this week. That was,
you know, a legit award that was given by people, you know, the powers that be. So when it comes
to rookie of the year, I think Bo can really separate himself the second.
and half of this season. We talked about it in the lead up to 2024. One of the most difficult things
for a rookie quarterback to do historically in the NFL is get to that 20 touchdown mark. Now,
Bo Necks has 10 passing touchdowns for rushing. One incredible reception touchdown.
But we see, I mean, as productive as Jaden Daniels was early this season, Cody,
how he has nine touchdown passes this season. And we're talking about him as a like all season long,
the narrative has been like, this dude is legit.
Even an MVP candidate's been talked about.
Even MVP has been thrown out there.
So what I'm saying is that I don't know, maybe first to 20 total touchdowns wins NFL
rookie of the year this year.
I mean, especially if one of these two guys can get to 20 passing touchdowns, which only 12
quarterbacks have done 12 rookie quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era have hit 20 touchdowns
passing.
That would be it right there to me, Cody, especially if your team is winning games.
Now, we'll see if Bowdox can do that.
Obviously, seven games remain here for the Bronco.
And as always, we want to know your thoughts.
Broncos country.
How strong of a case do you feel?
Bow Nix has a knee rookie of the year conversation.

The 2024 season is already a success for the Denver Broncos.
Cody and I are going to tell you Broncos fans exactly why this year is already a success on today's episode,
Lockdown Broncos, where we'll also be talking about some maybe some potential roster shuffling
that could be upcoming for the Broncos here.

Cody, I said it the Broncos.
This is already a successful year for this team.
Now, of course, there's plenty of football left to be played.
I don't mean that as a hot take.
But what I mean that is we've already seen a lot this year of boxes checked for this Denver
Broncos team in terms of huge things that needed to happen in order for the future of this franchise
to not necessarily be in question at the end of 2024.
I think we've gotten a lot of answers to those questions that we have leading up to this season.
Of course, the playoffs are still looming.
Of course, everybody in Broncos country would love to see that happen.
But let's talk about why this year has already been a success, at least I believe.
So what do you say?
Well, I think a lot of it too coming into it, the offseason, once Denver drafted Bo Nix,
I think you and I were in a grant.
It's like, hey, we want to see the Broncos, like,
be in a good position around Bo Nix, right?
We want to see, like, can Bo Nix make the most out of what's around him currently, right?
Because you know, coming into it, you're going to be limited a little bit with the salary cap implications
with the release of Russell Wilson, the release of Justin Sims.
Okay, hey, questions on the defense.
Is the defense going to be good enough to, you know, give Bo Nix and the offense more opportunities
on the field this upcoming season because he's a rookie?
Well, who's going to be the playmakers around a guy like Bo Nix?
And certainly those questions have kind of started to answer themselves a little bit.
Denver's defense has played phenomenal for a large part of this season.
You're starting to see the offense go a little bit more rhythm.
You're seeing more youth injected into it with Audrake Estimate.
You're more Devon Valle, Troy Franklin.
We like to see that Cortland Sutton, the number one guy, getting more involvement from the tight ends in the passing game.
But one thing, I think the biggest thing for us was can Bo Nick showcase that he is the guy for the Broncos?
I think here, 10 weeks into the season, seeing what we've seen,
and seeing Patrick Mahomes even come up after the Chiefs game,
say, hey, this is the first of many.
You know, good job. I keep leading these guys.
For Mahomes to say to Nix, this is the first of many between us.
That right there, I think, is a resounding thing that even Mahomes is thinking to
himself, like, hey, Denver, I've seen them go through a lot of quarterbacks.
They might have the guy.
I think the national media is starting to jump on it a little bit about Bo Nix.
I like the fit with him and Sean Payton.
I would say because of that, knowing that Bo is the guy, knowing that you can go into
this offseason and build this team around Bo tells me that this season,
is a success.
And if they're somehow able to make a wildcard spot in the playoffs,
that is just a little bit of a cherry on top of what I think could be a successful season.
Yeah, not only has Patrick Mahomes kind of acknowledged it with that post-game interaction, Cody,
but you heard Ian Rappaport on 850 K-OA talking with the guys over there about,
man, this was this game against the Chiefs for Bo Nix was a huge step forward for him.
And so when you've got guys like Rappapaport talking about Bo Nix,
because there's really no reason for people to be talking about the Broncos.
Remember, going into this year, they were irrelevant, supposed to win five and a half games,
you know, or five games or less, basically, saying that this team is one of the worst in the NFL,
arguably the worst roster in the NFL, worst defensive front in the NFL, all these sorts of things,
worst quarterback situation in the entire NFL.
A lot of great receipts out there.
A lot of great receipts out there.
And to see the way that Bo Nix has not only stepped in and had success in the NFL, but elevated
the team. I mean, it's pretty remarkable. So this season is a success for the fact that you found a
quarterback that you can compete going forward. And I know a lot of people were quick to write a second
eulogy or a third or fourth or fifth after that Ravens game saying, well, look at that.
The Broncos, they finally play a good team and, you know, they get absolutely taken to the shed
and, you know, beaten over, you know, that was, that was what it was. A blowout loss. It happens to almost
every team every year, right?
How they responded to that, how they came back, and were able to hang with Kansas City
and really out-dual Kansas City, out-play Kansas City for most of that game up until the
field goal at the end, it's proof that, man, it's don't write the eulogy so quick, right?
When you're out there, you're watching them get beat by the Baltimore Ravens.
Okay, that doesn't necessarily that one game is not proving that this Broncos team is terrible
or that the season is over or that they can't play with big teams.
because they proved against Kansas City that they can.
I think, Cody, when it comes to this season being a success,
nobody, certainly no detractors thought in their wildest dreams
that this team could be even sniffing the playoffs.
And here the Broncos are kind of holding their destiny in their own hands.
Well, I think another thing we can talk about, too, is just the culture.
Like, the Broncos appear to be ahead of schedule on the rebuild.
Now, if you ask Sean Payton, George Payton, they don't believe in the word rebuild.
They don't believe that they're rebuilding.
But I think when you look at the position, they're in the amount of young players that they have,
they're in a rebuild, but I think they're ahead of schedule.
I mean, they've shown that, hey, we can compete with Patch Mahomes and the Chiefs.
We can, you know, we have tough battles against him.
We just got to find a way to overcome the hump there and block on a, you know,
field goal attempt there and all of a sudden narrative changes.
But, you know, you're also seeing a lot of these young players step into larger roles.
Like, you know, Nick Benito's explosion this year.
Look, we saw him do it last year.
We're like, can he do it two years in a row?
Man, he's surpassed that really this season.
He's become the guy to where I said it a couple weeks ago, the Broncos internally from people I've
spoken to, believe that Benito is a superstar pass rusher in the making.
You certainly see that.
You see the emergence of Riley Moss at the cornerback position, a little of a surprise in
terms of how Brandon Jones has played, how well he's played since coming over in free agency.
Denver is in a very good position here going forward.
And the culture in the locker room, I think is great.
You've got a lot of voices stepping up.
And that's a really tight locker room, a tight cohesive unit that I think will respond this
week.
Well, Cody, I'm glad that you brought up kind of just the development and the, the blossoming
of these young players because I think that culture, it extends even into guys that haven't figured
it out quite yet, right? Like Marvin Mims against the Kansas City Chiefs, it was easy to write
Marvin off after what we'd seen in the first half, but then the trade deadline passes, the Broncos
don't go out and get anybody. And all of a sudden, we start to see the Broncos utilizing Marvin
Mims differently, trying to figure out ways to incorporate him into the offense because he is a game
changer, right? And it's kind of like the quote with Thomas Edison and the light bulb, right? It's
like, you know, I didn't fail a thousand times to figure out how to make the light bulb.
It's just that the light bulb was a process of a thousand steps.
So it's not just figuring out, okay, hey, this didn't work.
Square peg and a round hole, obviously a failed draft pick.
No, it takes patience sometimes.
It takes figuring out, hey, what can we do as a coaching staff to set these guys up for success?
We're not going to blame the failure of the player on the player.
We're going to figure out a way to make it work with these guys and get the best out of them.
and you see that all across the roster.
You see it with guys that, man, this team, other than Greg Dulcich,
I think everybody's getting kind of a fair shot.
Like Javonte Williams continually has gotten second chance after second chance.
This coaching staff is trying desperately to put guys that they've drafted or guys that
they're developing in positions to succeed.
And that is a big culture difference for this Broncos team.
And for them, it's exhausting every avenue to say, hey, we did everything that we can.
We tried this.
We tried that.
And ultimately, if it doesn't work out, then they say,
hey, we looked at those steps and now we're moving forward.
Certainly, you know, a new approach here to those Broncos regime under George Payton,
Sean Payton, which, hey, appears to be in a pretty good position here going forward.
Broncos country, one thing we are going to analyze here because of that position,
because of some roster maneuvering, Denver's in a position this week where they may have to shuffle the 53-man roster significantly
with some potential players returning.
We'll highlight that and what it may look like here on today's episode, Lockdown Broncos.

be making several roster moves this week to formulate the best 53 man roster possible. You have some
players potentially returning from injured reserve.
But how are you going to manage that with the active roster already at 53 players?
Some moves will have to be made to bring some guys back.
It's a very, very interesting situation for George Payton and Sean Payton.
Certainly something they've said is a little bit of a challenge for them in terms of the gymnastics of shuffling the roster.
Real quick, thank you so much everyone in Barraco's country.
All you every dayers and first listeners out there, we appreciate you so much for making the show exactly what it is.
Sir, look, this is something I've been monitoring for the last couple of weeks, seeing the
Broncos get fully healthy. We saw Luke Wattenberg promoted this past weekend back to the 53-man
roster because they did have one active spot there after the Barron Browning trade.
But now there are some situations maybe coming up here that's like, hey, how is Denver going to do this?
You have some players potentially returning from injury.
Michael Burton is on the practice squad without any more practice squad elevations.
If he's part of your game plan, you need to find a way to bring him back to the 53-man roster.
So you know what that means.
You must make corresponding roster moves.
Burton's not the only move anticipated.
There are a few more here that have some big implications for the Broncos roster.
Yeah, there absolutely are.
Obviously, we've been monitoring kind of what is the situation with Josh Reynolds,
who is eligible to come off injured reserve, the wide receiver,
who's been dealing with injuries this year, dating back to, I mean, even the preseason,
but then also suffered the scary incident where he was shot, right?
So I don't know how much that's playing into it, Cody, but I mean, obviously that
situation is unique.
Tyler Badegh at the running back position is eligible to come back as well.
And he's somebody that, I mean, I know we talked about Audric Estimate,
how impressive that he was.
But man, Tyler Badee is the guy that's leading this team.
I know it's a small sample, but in yards after contact per carry,
Tyler Bade is number one.
So do the Broncos find a way to get him back on the roster?
Could we see some surprise cuts coming up here?
Because you and I kind of speculated at the trade deadline.
Well, could somebody like Greg Dulcich be traded if some team, you know, the ink is still drying on the scouting report?
Nobody traded for him, obviously.
The Giovante Williams situation is fascinating because his snaps were significantly cut into.
This is one of those things, Cody, where there's some low hanging fruit, but then you've got enough of a situation on your hands here.
You don't have to bring everybody back right away.
You've got time.
But, man, the Broncos could be faced with some difficult choices upcoming.
Yeah, I mean, look, obviously the return of Josh Reynolds being won Tyler Biday.
Michael Burton's already on the practice squad out of those elevations as we talked about.
Delarian Turner Yale's 21-day window was activated two weeks ago.
So really this week is crunch time for DTI at the safety position.
And I even forgot one as well.
Remember, it's like the Broncos are kind of indicated they would like to have
Juan Alexander on the 53-man roster.
Do they hold off another couple weeks because they elevated Zach Cunningham?
He's got two more elevations.
do they do that?
So with that, it's like, all right, if Denver hypothetically is going to bring back
Michael Burton, Josh Reynolds, let's say even Drew Sanders this week, maybe Tyler Biday or DTY,
I mean, you're going to have to make several releases.
So at the bottom of the 53 men roster, as is, who are some potential names that could be released?
I think you look at Lavelle Bailey.
He's on the 53 men roster, could be brought back to the practice squad, but obviously
would have to clear waivers.
That's to challenge them.
He's not a vested veteran.
Hedron Smith would have to clear waivers.
He's on the 53 men roster.
Calvin Throckmorton probably makes the most sense right now
because he was already elevated three times
on the practice squad to the game day roster
was promoted because Luke Wattenberg was not yet back
and so there's that position there.
You throw out a surprise name Greg Dulcich maybe as a possibility here for Denver
because you're trying to figure out how do you balance the gymnastics
and I would say maybe even another name to watch because he's a veteran
Matt Parrott could be a name to watch.
You bring him back on the practice squad.
Use him for three elevations because he's your jumble package guy.
And I think the key here,
here is like this is a good problem to have for Denver because I think if you have like the
string of injuries in which this team has had not in the last year but over like the years prior
to that you certainly would have a lot of room to move and fluctuate these guys here.
This is where I think it becomes a little problematic like it's a problem.
It's a good problem to have but it's also when it's like wait, what do you do here because
if DTY's window isn't activated, he goes back to IR and doesn't play the remainder of the season.
Same thing with Drew Sanders.
And I think even when it happens too, like they haven't they've even done it.
with Tyler Biday, part of me is wondering if that's also the case as well.
I don't know if the side field, him being on the side field counts towards his window.
I think it's when he's actually on the field practicing with the team.
So that I think makes things a little more interesting.
This is a not a very fun problem to have here for George Payton, Sean Payne.
Though it is a good problem.
Yeah, it's not fun, but it is good because it means that you're relatively healthy and
you're getting healthier, which is great news for the Denver Broncos,
especially in terms of those guys that are young players,
or playmakers for the offense.
Like the Drew Sanders thing gets me very excited because,
I mean,
he was a high third round pick just last year.
You,
you want to see that guy.
You need to see that guy play.
Josh Reynolds,
I mean,
he could be a huge asset to this offense as a chain mover,
somebody who works well in the red zone.
We've seen him at his best with the Detroit Lions.
I mean,
a 121 quarterback rating on his targets last year.
Pretty insane stuff.
And then Biday would be great to have back.
I think the situation here that you're looking at is, man, what do we do with some of these guys who have been inactive for the majority of the year, right?
I mean, those are, those are some of the other guys that I would be going to taking a look at here in terms of this guy, he's not contributing, but there's certain guys who are developmental.
Like, I mean, you look at rookie cornerback, Chris Abram's drain, for example.
He ain't getting, the Broncos love that guy.
And so he's not going anywhere.
but what about some of these other guys that have been deactivated pretty much all year?
Like,
do you subject somebody like Frank Crum to waivers?
Because you believe in the future, you know, what he can bring to the table.
But at the same time, you're trying to win games right now.
Yeah.
So who can you sneak through waivers?
Because everybody right now is subject to the waiver wire.
After the trade deadline, you can't cut vested veterans and just, all right, he's a free agent on Wednesday.
We sign him to the practice squad again.
Thursday and it works out.
No, that's not the case.
Like, if you cut somebody right now, they're not, they're not going to free agency.
They are going to be.
I just learned that.
I just learned that.
How about that?
You just educated me on that.
There we go.
How about that?
Yeah.
So that's the, that's the case.
So if it's, I mean, it could be anybody on this team, like they, they will not go
straight to free agency.
They will go to waivers.
And that's the scary thing is like, do you want any of these players that you like going
to a division rival and upcoming opponent?
Like, all of that stuff has to be.
and it's very much in play.
Well, Broncos country, it is a good problem to have,
but certainly as the Broncos get ready for this final seven game stretch
in a position to make the postseason,
he had a factor in who's going to offer the most value to them
from a roster standpoint,
some tough decisions coming up here from this Broncos team.
And, you know,
I wouldn't even be surprised if they, you know,
hold out DTY and say,
hey, like,
we're just going to keep rehabbing.
Like, they're in a position right now where they don't need him right now,
which isn't a bad thing.
You know, it's not an indictment on DTY.
It's, hey, like, get his healthy.
you can. We know you're going to be part of what we want to do next year because of your special
team's value. And then even a guy like Drew Sanders, is it worth right now bringing Drew Sanders
back fully when you have Jonah Ellis, Dandre Tillman right now having the success that they are?
Obviously, with Nick Benito, Jontz Cooper, does it make sense to do just that? It's good that he's back,
but do you need him right now? That is the huge question going forward.
