As we break down, as we get ready for OTAs here in the next two and a half weeks,
We're going to take an early look at the Broncos roster starting off with running back.
We'll go through our predictions for how the running back position may fall out here over the course of the offseason.
More importantly, a potential position battle for that RB4 spot, if Denver even keeps four,
we're going to kick things off by talking about the Broncos improving the running back position this offseason.
And to the point, there might not actually be much competition for the roles that we have already envisioned here for this Broncos team.
Sarah, I'm curious for your thoughts here because this was an offseason where the Broncos,
Before free agency even began, they could be going after Brees Hall to the point of the New York Jets, they franchise tag Brees so that he wouldn't hit the open market because Denver would have had interest in him.
And I'm sure Darren Mugi, being a former assistant GM in Denver, probably knew that he was one of those players that they've talked about in the past before.
Kenneth Walker signed with the Chiefs pretty early on.
So the Broncos, they went out and they re-signed J.K. Dobbins, who went healthy, was so effective for them.
and then they re-signed Tyler Biday.
They re-signed Jalilm McLaughlin.
And then they go out there and they add Jonah Coleman in the NFL draft.
The Broncos, they made a lot of moves at this position here this offseason,
even though one of those moves was a new one.
And I know that obviously the Jonah Coleman draft pick is kind of the shiny new thing right now for everybody.
But there's no question that the biggest move the Broncos made was bringing back J.K. Dobbins,
who was top five in pretty much every metric that you can look at before he went down
with that injury against the Raiders in week 10 last season.
And yes, there is always the caveat with J.K. Dobbins.
There is always sort of the asterisk, I suppose, next to whatever you're trying to project with
him.
I know he takes issue when we talk about this with the injury prone label, he's had a lot of
freak injuries.
But for the Broncos to bring him back on a two-year deal, and I know it's effectively a
one-year deal with essentially a team option for the second season, but I think that does
give us a great indication that J.K. Dobbins is healthy. He's ready to go. I think he would have
played if the Broncos had made it to the Super Bowl, even though there might have been some risk
attached to that. At least he would have wanted to. He would have campaigned, right? So if the team
is that happy and that pleased with where he's at in terms of recovery from injury, there's no
doubt in my mind that J.K. Dobbins can return to being a top five runner in the NFL. And that's not to
say I'm trying to overhype him. That's where he was at when he got hurt last year. So YARC.
after contact, you know, yards.
I mean, he's just everything that you look for, broken tackles.
He catches, passes out of the backfield.
He's physical.
He's everything that you need for this offense to be successful and balanced.
And I think with what JK does, and not only that, I mean, he had a lot of explosive runs last
year, too.
So it's not just, man, he's doing the physical, the dirty work in between the tackles.
He could bust off a big run or two.
So J.K. Dobbins coming back into the fold, it might not have been,
the jersey swap type of free agent like Kenneth Walker, Travis H.N or, you know,
Breeze Hall, all these sorts of guys.
But it does make a lot of sense for the Broncos to bring him back, especially if they believe
that he can stay healthy.
Yeah.
And I think that they had a rotation worked out between he and RJ Harvey Harvey, who the team drafted
and last year's NFL drafted in round number two.
They really played well off of one another to the point where RJ could run the ball
when he was in, but he was that effective pass catching weapon out of the backfield that
Sean Payton has kind of been asking for since he really arrived in Denver.
The Broncos haven't really had that guy to get the Joker wings.
I'll bring that up there because that is what the position is called.
I know that is something that still frustrates Broncos country to hear.
We won't talk about it as much.
But I think you can clearly look at JK.
You can clearly look at RJ and say these are two different backs and the way that they play
off one another.
I think that's the formula here.
And you and I've talked about it so much.
Now for JK averaging five yards per carry.
last season, unbelievable for him.
And to the point about the explosiveness, the Broncos, they don't need a burner at the
running back position.
They need someone who can methodically wear down a defense.
And I think between Jonah Coleman, who was drafted, he's got the bigger body.
I think he could wear defenses down.
RJ is this all around dynamic weapon as a runner and as a pass catcher out of the back
field, whereas JK, JK's your primary guy that, hey, he's going to follow patiently behind your
guard who's pulling, and then he's going to find the seam, get north-south.
and explode for seven or eight yards.
That is what ultimately will help the Broncos offense be successful in terms of their run game.
You bring all those guys back in the mix.
That is where you're at.
But then you throw in other names too.
You still bring back Jel Loflin,
who's been a Sean Payton favorite for the last handful of years since 2023.
A guy who I felt like didn't get enough opportunities last season even after the injuries.
We saw him shine and some of the touches that he had.
Tyler Bade certainly had an important role behind the scenes for the Broncos,
whereas the production doesn't necessarily show that value.
But Sean believes that, hey, he's our best pass protecting back.
He's the back that we want to have in two-minute situations.
That's going to be heavily contested this upcoming season.
And we'll talk about that as we get into our position competition here
at the running back position coming up in just a little bit.
And then you got some other guys too and Cody Schrader,
who's on this Broncos roster right now,
who was kind of coveted last year by Denver,
spent some time on the practice squad,
didn't really get a game day elevation.
So there is a lot of guys in the mix right now here,
but I'm very curious to see how many total spots that Denver carries.
But let's talk about the biggest storyline here, Sarah, for running back.
How do the Broncos get this to be a strength of theirs, this upcoming season?
It's had flashes.
There's been moments where the Broncos have kind of ridden the hot hand in the run game,
but it has never been considered the team's strength.
It's always kind of been considered one of their biggest weaknesses.
I think it starts with the offensive line really,
finding ways to become dominant in the running game, right?
And that's that allows any back that's out there to really thrive.
And I'm not saying that they have to go out and they have to be number one in terms of,
you know,
whatever run block metric you look for.
But I think it has to be better than it was last year, right?
Because it wasn't just the running backs and the personnel in the backfield that
ultimately was the problem.
And the Broncos kind of showed us that by saying we're going to bring pretty much everybody
back and we're going to add Jonah Coleman into the mix.
And so I think it was,
maybe scheme, offensive line driven, whatever you want to say, that has to be better.
But also, these guys have to be better in their own right as well.
You've got to find ways to create yardage after contact.
As we saw, I mean, didn't do it every time, but RJ Harvey did that quite a bit last year.
Some of the biggest plays of the entire season were RJ Harvey creating yards after contact.
And so, yes, that is part of your job as a running back.
But you obviously want these guys to be as effective as they possibly can every down.
and that starts with the offensive line.
But you also want to keep them fresh, right?
I mean, that's part of what you talked about earlier with J.K.
Davins, RJ Harvey, splitting carries at an appropriate rate early in the season and really
balancing each other out.
And Sean Peyton has talked about, man, I don't necessarily think it's as easy to involve
three running backs as it is to just feed two guys.
So at some point, my thought is, well, then just feed two guys, right?
But I think part of the method to the madness there is keeping J.K. Dobbins as fresh as
possible and making sure that they didn't overwhelm R.J. Harvey in his rookie season or at least
getting him in a position where he could do exactly what they wanted him to do as a past catcher.
So I think right now you have a really balanced group and stable of running backs that you can
rely on if you need to, you know, shuffle some of these guys around. If it's got to be Coleman and
Harvey or if it's Dobbins and Harvey or Dobbins and Coleman, these guys all complement each
other really well. And then you've got those back end players who have a lot of experience
in Sean Payton's offense. I mean, I believe Jolil McLaughlin and Tyler Badeh are the two. I mean,
obviously they've been around since the beginning of the Sean Peyton era. So they're the longest
tenured guys there. So you've got that experience in the system. You've got the talent level.
And I think you've got the diversity of skill set to really see this be one of the most improved
units on the team. They amplifies a lot of competition too. And there's going to be certain roles
where maybe there's going to be competition. I think the Bronco is adding Jonah Coleman kind
of throws a little bit of, uh, I'd say uncertainty about.
like, hey, you can only feed two.
Like, will that be challenged this upcoming season?
Because why draft Jonah Coleman if you're only going to feed two running backs?
And if JK's your primary guy and RJ's your other guy, like, what does that mean for Jonah in this type of situation, right?
I'm very curious to see how this might evolve here in Sean Payton's offense, especially as the team looks to make a push here.
The run game has to be a bigger proponent of where they're trying to aim to be successful.
if their team hopes to come out of that first gotlet part of the schedule alive,
the run game is going to be something that really does help them out.
Hopefully, hopefully they find their footing early on here to start this season here.
And Broncos Country, let's know your thoughts on the Broncos improved running back room,
but you know what we're going to get into here?
We're going to talk about the running back position and the competition that's taking place
certain roles.
But more importantly, will Sean keep three or will he keep four?
We'll debate and discuss here on today's episode, Locked on Broncos.

If the Denver Broncos end up keeping four running backs on their roster,
again, the competition for that four spot
could get pretty interesting here over the course of the off season.
And I've got a sleeper that I want to talk about on today's episode of the show.
We're going to get to that.
And Broncos Country, thanks so much for being it every day
and making us your first listen of the day every single day.
And if you want an ad free version of the show,

That supercast.com.
Cody, the battle for this fourth spot here on the Broncos roster
at running back could get very interesting.
I tease that I have a little sleeper option here for the team.
And it's a guy that you mentioned earlier, Cody Schrader.
And I'm not just saying that because he's a fellow, you know,
Cody alongside you.
How cool would it be to be able to talk about somebody named
Cody on the team. But, you know, I think Cody Schrader is somebody that, like you said,
the team kind of prioritized late last season. They made sure that they had him as one of their
reserve future signings in this offseason group. They just cut Deuce Vaughn to make room for a
couple of tryout players that they signed after the rookie mini camp. So Cody Schrader is
fascinating to me as a potential option who could play special teams, maybe a kickoff return
option. But if he's going to be that sleeper to make the roster, I mean, he's, he's,
is going to have to beat out two guys who have not just played for Sean Payton over the last couple
years, but Tyler Biday and Jolil McLaughlin have played significant snaps over the last few seasons.
Yeah, no, you're right. And this is where things kind of get a little hectic when you talk about
the running back position because I think you and I sitting here, I don't want to speak for you.
Let me know if you agree or disagree. I think us sitting here today, we're believing that the pecking
order is going to be J.K. Dobbins, R.J. Harvey, Jonah Coleman, in terms of the top three running
backs on this roster that Denver carries on to the 53. Now, the biggest question is, do they carry
a fourth? I mean, historically, Sean has. That guy usually will be in inactive on game day, but to the
point of what you mentioned about the kick return game, the Broncos, they need some help in this
department if they want to remove Marvin from that to protect him. If he's going to have a bigger
role offensively, we don't know what that's going to exactly look like just yet. But as we're going
to OTAs, we're going to find out maybe some bits and pieces about that. But yeah, Schrader could
obviously factor into that. Tyler Bade has factored into the kick return.
game before and Jelelma Loughlin as well.
So I think I want to kick off maybe some competition previous year.
Okay, we already think in the top three.
Let me know.
Actually, I kind of spoke for you.
Do you agree that that's going to be the pecking order between those three running
backs?
Absolutely.
And when you talk about kind of the roster construction, right, I mean, those guys are
for sure making it, barring injury and putting in one of them.
We don't want to see that happen.
But yes, those are the top three backs for sure.
Okay.
So with that said, we believe that's a pretty good pay.
order here for the Broncos. Now, if they carry four, what does that look like? Is that,
hey, we need some insurance at the running back position in case, because in case,
JK goes down. Well, I feel like if JK goes down, that's where Jonah Coleman comes in, right?
What if something happens to RJ?
Jonah, I don't know, is he going to come play that RJ role? So that's where I think there is kind of
some competition here because of what we've even talked about, a tight end, which would be another
episode down the line. You want to have similar guys who can do similar things that your other
two backs can do. JK. is your primary guy, not.
necessarily heavily involved as a pass catcher.
That's RJ. RJ can run.
Be involved as a pass catcher. Well, who else can do that?
Well, Tyler Badegh has been used as that pass catching option or the screen option.
But the thing is, there's always been a tell when he's in the game as to what the
Broncos are doing.
Can Cody Schrader compete to kind of maybe showcase himself in that type of way?
Can Jalil McLaughlin take that area of his game to the next level?
To me, that's where really the competition truly is.
It is between Schrader, Jalil, and Tyler Bade for not only a kicker.
return role, but also as this fit piece right behind RJ Harvey in terms of what his role is.
Yes, and that's where I'm fascinated to find out what are we going to see from a guy like
Cody Schrader in the preseason because last year, Tyler Badee played 260 special team snaps on
top of his 192 offensive snaps. So it's not like he was just out there as a secondary option in
the return game, right? I mean, he was out there playing nearly 60% of the special team snaps.
And so I think that is a big reason why the Broncos brought in Cody Schraders to play that special teams.
Yeah, he hasn't played a ton at the NFL level.
But when he did get action in his limited time with the Rams, he did play, you know, 14 special team snaps.
So he's going to be out and he's a bigger body, right?
He's 5.9, 214 pounds as compared to somebody like Tyler Badegh, who's 59 under 200 pounds,
at least listed what I'm looking at right here.
So I think that that is a big reason for it.
is the special teams, potential kickoff return abilities.
And that's a different type of special teams, you know, ability than just somebody who can come in and return kickoffs, right?
So we're not talking about a, a specialist in that way.
We're talking about potential core four type of guy.
So that's where I think things could get interesting.
And this is a guy whose pedigree is there.
I mean, there's obviously a number of NFL teams have given him a shot.
I mentioned the Rams.
He's also had time with the Texans, the Jaguars.
He's now with the Denver Broncos.
but this guy was an All-American at the, I believe, Division 2 level at Truman State, Cody,
once upon a time, ran for over 2,000 yards in one of his seasons there,
and then transferred to Missouri, where he became an All-American,
a first-team All-American in the 2023 season.
So this is somebody who has, you know, worked really well as a all-around back,
power, past catching abilities, special teams, you name it.
The skills are all there.
It's now just a matter of can he put it together at the highest level, and maybe with the Broncos, he can.
So that somebody, regardless of it's Cody Schrader, Jalil McLaughlin, Tyler Biday, I don't think the Broncos are just going to keep a fourth back just for the sake of it.
I think there's going to be a specific reason for it.
And it's got to be one of those guys forcing the issue.
There has to be a rhyme or reason for it, and especially with what Sean Payton has said.
I remember one time at the podium last year, he said as they look to evaluate this roster, if you're not starting,
You have to play special teams.
You can't just sit on the 53-man roster and just do nothing, right?
You're going to play some sort of role,
or you're just going to be one of those guys that isn't going to get carried to the active game day roster.
You'll be one of those typical game day inactives.
And that's where I think things are going to be very interesting.
To the points there, and here's a real possible scenario here for the Broncos.
I think there's a chance that they carry three running backs on their 53
and that they sneak one or two of these guys onto the practice squad.
And then they play around with the flexible elevations.
And obviously as the season goes on, there are going to be things that pop up where someone
gets injured and a roster spot's going to open.
You're going to have to move a guy from your practice squad to your 53 because somebody goes on
IR.
The numbers game gets in the way of that a lot.
And so I am truly curious to see how running back is going to kind of play out.
And do the Broncos, do they carry forward just because of what you mentioned about,
JK, the history, unfortunately, of him missing some time, never completing a full NFL
season. I don't know if you can necessarily make that decision just because of what history
has said. And you just have to hope that, hey, this is a new year. Knock on wood, this is the year
the JK makes it all 17. But that's why you have the veteran status on the practice squad that you
don't necessarily have to worry about them clearing waivers and getting picked up by another team.
They'll get an opportunity to just sign right away after the initial 24-hour period kind of takes place here.
So I am curious, Broncos country, share with us your thoughts. Do you think the Broncos will carry three on
their 53 this upcoming season or you think that they're going to carry four.
And if you think they're going to carry four,
how do you see that competition playing out between Julilla McLaughlin,
Cody Schrader, and Tyler Badegh.
But coming up next, Brockos country, Sarah and I,
we're going to share our prediction here for the Broncos running back room,
whether or not we believe they're going to carry three or four and who that's going
to be and what those designated roles will look like inside of Sean Payton's offense.

As OTAs get ready to kick off in the next two and a half weeks,
we're going to be taking a look at every position here for the Denver Broncos,
a little bit of an early roster preview as well.
But as we get ready to dive into all of that,
we're going to share our way too early roster predictions here specifically at running back.
Thanks for making us your first listen, however you choose to do so,

Also, where you know, it's your team every day.
Sarah, all right, you're up on deck.
here as we predict this. I want you to give me whether or not the Broncos are going to carry four.
And I want you to tell me in the exact order you think the Broncos running back depth chart is
going to work out. And then I'll share mine. And then we'll dive deeper into maybe the specified
roles for these players and what it'll look like. I think they are going to keep four. I mean,
and I think it's going to be because of the need for insurance behind J.K. Dobbins.
And there may be some flex with this, right? There may be some flex where you say, hey, we're going to
keep somebody around for a handful of weeks and we'll kind of see how it goes with jkk and then we'll
use that roster spot as we need but i do think it's going to be four i think jk davens i think obviously
rj harvey jonah coleman those three guys and then i think that fourth spot i might convince myself
even if it's just the devil we don't know at this point that cody schrader could be that fourth guy
because i think he has that size that the team wants at the running back position i think he can
play special teams i think that he's got the ability and maybe the upside in the
running game that the other two guys just either don't have or haven't proven when they've been
given opportunities, quite frankly. I mean, last year was the golden opportunity for Jolil
McLaughlin, for Tyler Badegh, to prove that they could be factors in the running game for the
Denver Broncos. And it just didn't happen. And that's not to say that Jalil has never had a good
game because he has. And he should have been given more opportunities, like you said. It's not to say
that Tyler Bade has never had a good game as a running back. I mean, the Tampa Bay game,
from 2024 stands out.
But when J.K. Dobbins goes down with an injury and you need somebody to step up in the
running game specifically, when the AFC championship is on the line and neither of those two guys
can step up, I think that's when you get replaced.
And so I believe that Jonah Coleman was a direct replacement for Tyler Badegh.
And I think that we could see Cody Schrader as that insurance back and special teams guy,
because I don't know if Jonah Coleman plays special teams.
And so I could see that being the case with these four guys making the team and the Broncos maybe saying,
hey, we're going to try to bring back McLaughlin and or Bade to the practice squad.
I think those are those are fair points that you make here.
And I think as like for me, my argument is going to be a little different.
I'm going to go with three running backs.
And here's why.
Just because I think you have to worry about what other positions you're going to carry an additional guy, right?
Is it going to be tight end this year?
Is it going to be four or five tight ends based on what Sean Payton has said about guys like Caleb Loner or,
or are you going to carry more guys at linebacker this year than you did last year in your 53?
Well, is that going to change, especially if the Broncos decide to carry four outside linebackers?
You have flexibility because of this.
If you go lighter at one position, that creates an additional roster spot.
But to me, I think it is going to be JKRJ and Jonah Coleman.
I think they carry three.
And I think they are going to go with the path of saying, we're going to release these guys.
We're going to bring them right back on our practice squad because they're vested veterans.
And then we have flexibility.
We're not necessarily forced right away week one.
say this guy has to come in and step up and do this right away or to be this role.
Like we're going to be smart with our three flexes that we have.
And I could see Denver carrying three total running backs there on the practice squad this
upcoming season.
I imagine they'll probably pick up an international player on the practice squad,
which will initially get them an additional roster spot.
So instead of 16, we'll have 17, but that 17th guy doesn't count against it.
That is where I think the Broncos are going to go here at running back specifically.
Now, I want to get into roles here.
How do you think the role for this running back room is going to play out?
Is JK your primary guy?
And then are you going to bring in RJ Harvey on the next series?
Or is this more so we're pigeoning JK to be our first and second down back?
We're bringing in RJ for the next primary carries.
And then what is going to be the role here of Jonah Coleman?
To me, I think Jonah Coleman was brought in to replace Tyler Badegh right away.
To play that third down back role because of his willingness and his knowledge
and experience and being good at past protection.
But I think more importantly, he can offer you value on third down as a runner
and short-yarded situations.
And as we have seen on his college tape, he can impact you out of the backfield as a
pass catcher in those situations.
I think that will be so important for Denver to not tip their hand in those situations
they did with Badee.
So that's why I've got them as JK, RJ, and Badee.
Help me understand, like from your perspective, what do you think the role is based on your
four guys that you kind of outlined there?
How is the role designation going to work for all four of them?
Well, I kind of hope that it's a bit of a surprise because I don't know,
based on last year, right?
We're talking about breaking in a rookie running back in RJ Harvey and kind of trying to figure out,
you know, Sean Peyton at one point said he hasn't got his wings yet, you know?
And so how much does he grow in year two and how much does that change his overall workload?
And with Jonah Coleman,
And do you necessarily want him coming in and just immediately, yes, I think he does.
And I completely agree.
I think he replaced the Bade's role on this team.
But is it a exact copy and paste of Tyler Bade's role where he's playing all two-minute drive situations and things like that?
I don't know because you'd love to see R.J.
take over some of that work and be able to be out there in two-minute drill.
So I kind of hope that there's a bit of a surprise element to the way that they involve
of all three of these guys because I do think that would be nice to see you want to keep jk
davens fresh i think jonah coleman is the guy who probably helps him do that although we also think
hey there's got to be some sort of wiggle room with the role for r j harvey as a runner although
when you think about guys like alvin camara for instance he never ran for a thousand yards with
the new orleans saints so it's not like they were sitting there feeding him 25 times a game and
just so his role is going to be what it is.
He's going to be the past catching back who is an explosive threat on the ground,
but you have to have those other guys like Dobbins and like Coleman who can eat up
four and a half, five yards per carry like Dobbins was doing last year to keep those boxes
light because J.K. Dobbins did all what he did last year.
I believe he faced the second or third most eight plus men boxes of any running back in the
NFL and was still as explosive as he was, still creating yardage.
after contact.
So that's the type of efficiency you need to have with that number one back.
And I just,
I'm confused a little bit too,
Cody,
because,
and I'm interested to hear what any of the listeners think,
because to me,
if we're talking about who's the better backup to J.K.
Dobbins,
it's got to be Jonah Coleman in terms of skill set,
right?
Because he can affect all three downs in kind of an equal way.
Whereas RJ is much more of the,
we want to give this guy 80,
to 90 targets in the passing game type level of pass catcher at the position.
So they're just so different and I don't know exactly what it's going to be.
No, I don't either.
And I think that's the great mystery here of the offseason.
And I'm curious too once OTAs take place when we get a chat with Sean,
when we actually get to talk to Davis Webb for the first time as the offensive coordinator,
maybe what his vision is of the run game and how it coincides with maybe setting up
bone nicks in the passing offense for more sustainable success.
to me that's the ultimate goal here.
We've been pounding the table for the run game to be the thing that the Broncos get fixed more than anything because it goes back to what Sean Payton said when they drafted Bo.
The key to help in a young quarterback, a strong run game and a good defense.
Broncos have a really good defense.
And if that run game can be stronger, and even Rod Smith, Broncos should be in the Hall of Fame.
Broncos undrafted legend, Rod Smith said, get the run game going and watch everything else open up for Bowenicks.
I agree. I think everybody else agrees with that notion as well.
But we want to hear from you on today's episode of shows.
We take a look at every position of this Broncos roster going into OTAs.
Running back was today.
Broncos country tomorrow's episode show for all you every dayers,
Sarah and I, we're going to sit down.
We're going to talk about the linebacker position and whether or not it is better
than what the Broncos had last year.
And some of the biggest question marks surrounding that position as well,
including competition for Jonah Ellis.
Could he be in line to start next to just.
Justin Sternad and or Alex Singleton.
Well, you'll get all that on tomorrow's episode of the show.
