We got a lot to break down on today's episode.
The show will wrap things up by highlighting at Radio Row.
The defending Super Bowl champions had a lot of high praise for Broncos' quarterback bow.
Nix, we'll hear from them on that.
We'll also talk about how a defensive player of the year nomination or win for Patrick
Sertan could cement him as a Hall of Famer very, very early on in his career.
And we'll also look into whether or not the Bronco should trade for Miles Garrett.
That's been brought up.
We'll tell you why we think they should not do that.
And you'll get all that here on today's episode of show,
brought to you by friends over there at prize picks.

Sarah, my friend, yesterday's episode of show,
we highlighted why the Broncos should trade for Cooper Cup.
There's another big name available.
Miles Garrett has officially requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns.
And the first thing I thought of is I can already see everyone saying,
hey, the Broncos should go trade for him.
This is not something that they should do, in my opinion.
I'm curious how you feel about this.
And we'll dive deeper into it.
Yeah, I think for general manager, George Payton, Cody, you certainly don't want it to come out that you didn't ask.
You know, what's that?
Hey, what's the asking price on Miles Garrett, if you guys do?
Just say, yeah, the crazy situation you do decide to trade.
And what's the asking price?
I think George Payton wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't do that.
But in terms of where the Broncos are at right now, where other.
teams are at with their edge positions around the league and just given the you know what the team
needs right now right like what the broncos actually need in order to improve as a roster
miles garrett obviously would be awesome in any team like all 32 teams he's a difference maker
he's a guy that can go out there in rec games he can close out games he can create game changing
turnovers with his ability to get to the quarterback and and even with that being said it's just a
sticky situation for the Broncos right now because you've got two guys that you can really build
around off the edge in Nick Benito and Jonathan Cooper. Now, that's not to say, hey, you know,
those guys are better than Miles Garrett. That's not what anybody's saying here. But in terms of
the way the Broncos are building out the roster, the salary cap pie, all the things that they
want to address this off season, it's kind of nice. And we talked about it in an episode, you know,
a couple of days ago, how the edge position, like, it's kind of nice for the Broncos to not
have to worry about that right now, right? I mean, you've got not only those two starters,
but you've got Jonah Ellis, Dandre Tillman, there's plenty of depth at this unit for the Denver
Broncos. And that's not to say that, hey, if the Broncos, you know, wanted Miles Garrett, if they
were motivated to get him, would I be upset if he was on the team? Absolutely not. But do they
need to go out and trade Nick Benito and a first round pick to get him? I don't think that's necessarily
the wisest course of action or use of resources this offseason. Wouldn't it be nice to have a guy like
Miles Garrett 100% absolutely. The dude is is legitimate, but here's the case too. You don't need him.
It's not something that the Broncos need. It's a luxury buy, right? It's like, you know, you get paid a really, you know, big bonus.
You're like, ah, I'm going to go buy a house with this bonus. You don't do that. That's not a smart financial decision to do.
And look, I think also as well, I mean, sir, you mentioned the outside linebackers.
I think in Denver scheme with Vance Joseph, Miles Garrett would play defensive end more so than he would play on the outside edge here.
And then when I look at that position, well, you already have Zach.
Allen, you already have John Franklin
Myers. Both those guys are making
money. You're looking to maybe potentially
extend Zach Allen here in the near future. It just
would not make sense, though it would make the
Broncos defense really, really good,
which it was last year. Look, the Broncos had
63 sacks last season. And adding Miles
Garrett to the mix would certainly be a very
dangerous dynamic to add to that,
but it doesn't move the needle
enough for them to win a championship, right? Where we know
that the Broncos offense has to improve. And of course,
yes, the defense has areas to improve
itself, but from a roster and a
personnel standpoint, it's not the wise decision to make right now, especially when you need to get the
offensive side of the ball better around Bo Nix while he's on a rookie deal. Obviously, the NFL
draft will provide some flexibility in that regard to maybe adding a tight in, adding a running back.
You know, we already entertained the Cooper Cup trade idea in yesterday's episode of the show.
So, you know, you got your young guys around there. To me, I'm very curious, Sarah. I don't think that
Sean Payton or George Payton are ever going to tell us this. Maybe they will at the NFL scout and
combine. But like,
what do they perceive right now as the biggest need?
Like what is going to help them take the next step to advancing to winning the
AFCUS, right?
They say that's the goal.
What move would help them do that?
Now,
you have to look at the flip side with Miles Garrett as well.
If he somehow ends up in Kansas City,
I'm going to be miserable.
You know,
that's the one thing.
You don't want to end up with your division rival,
but you can't trade from just because you don't want him to go to a division
rival that's got a chance, obviously, every year during the Super Bowl conversation,
you know, the amount of AFC championship games they've been to in a row.
And look,
opportunity to go three Pete this weekend, which would be unfortunate, you know,
in the eyes of all of us here in Broncos country.
So you don't want them to get stronger there.
But then again, I look at all the, all the guys that, you know, that they have with,
with Mahomes, with Kelsey and I'm like, all right, can they really afford a Miles Garrett
at this point there in Kansas City?
Or are they just going to, you know, is that something that's going to help them?
Because the chiefs did a lot with not necessarily the greatest playmakers around
Mahomes this season.
So maybe they do have an argument there.
But we would hate to see that here in Broncos country.
I just think as nice and shiny as Miles Garrett would be here in the Broncos defensive scheme.
I mean, you'd have two legitimate, I mean, three when you consider what Nick Benito did.
You'd have three defensive player of the year candidate.
It's on your roster there.
And certainly, man, it would make the Broncos pass rush even more dominant.
It just doesn't make sense, even though it would be nice.
Now, if the NFL didn't have a salary cap, we could toggle it off like people doing mad.
And sure, why not?
Go and go and trade three first.
But the fact that Denver's got their capital back and they're in a good space from a salary cap standpoint,
tells me that they're not going to be interested in trading for Miles Garrett.
Yeah, I think you're more likely to see teams like the Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions,
Washington commanders, like those teams, I could very much see maybe the Buffalo Bills,
if we're talking about the AFC, those teams make a lot of sense to acquire him and give up
the capital for him because those teams right now are in those types of windows to where you would
say, hey, like we need to get a guy like this because we're in like do or die mode.
The Broncos aren't yet in do or die mode.
I think the Broncos are closer to contention than a lot of people seem to think.
Like a lot of people in my mentions lately, Cody, have been saying, well, the Broncos are six, seven, eight pieces away from being Super Bowl contenders.
But then you have Sean Payton saying, like, they felt good about going into Kansas City and winning a playoff game this past year with 90 million and dead caps.
So the perception of the team from the vantage point of the fans is, I think, vastly different than the perception from the inside of the organization.
And so with that being said, I still believe you led the NFL in Sacks this past season, right?
I mean, that's not to say that you don't need a Miles Garrett.
Nobody, nobody out there in the NFL saying, oh, we don't need Miles Garrett, right?
We don't need him.
Like, he's one of the best players in the league.
Everybody's like, hey, if we have a chance to get him, like, we might as well ask.
But there's going to be other teams out there that are far more desperate than the Denver Broncos to get him.
Like, would Broncos, like you said, it would be nice, be a luxury, be kind of like one of those.
things that, hey, we'd love to have that if we could toggle off the salary cap thing,
but there are other pieces to the puzzle that this team has to consider.
And considering you led the NFL in Sacks this past season, it's not that Miles Garrett
wouldn't make a difference, Cody, but it's just the fact that, hey, your pass rush was already
the best in the NFL this past year when you're bringing it in waves.
Try to keep that unit together and keep developing and growing those players while, you know,
investing your assets that you have, your draft picks, your cap space, in other guys who could
really help this roster all over the place.
Well, and another thing as well, too, you know, Miles Garrett wants to go to a championship
contender, right? And I felt it was interesting. Ian Rappaport said he believes that the
Broncos aren't far off from being in that position. I know that the team, internally, people
I've spoken to also feel very good about where they're heading, right? And nobody came out and
said, okay, we're believe we're going to compete for a Super Bowl in the next two years. You know,
those are bold. Like, you know, but that's the goal. You want to win your division, get to the
playoffs, advance further in the playoffs. It's very, very possible. But, you know, for
me, I look at this and say like, okay, if you're, if you're the Cleveland Browns, you know,
why in this situation, even though that Miles Garrett, like the fan base in Cleveland seems like
they're all in in terms of being on Miles Garrett's side with what's happened. Like, hey, we don't
blame you, Miles. But the Cleveland Browns organizationally, they've said they're not going to,
they have no interest in trading him. But that's going to, I mean, they're going to be forced to,
you know, if he's not going to show up here. And the thing that I think of is they don't owe necessarily
if you're, if you're the organizations, if you're the Browns, they don't necessarily
oh, Miles Garrett, like we're going to send you to a championship contender.
And they're going to send him to whoever offers the best deal, unless it's, you know,
Dallas Maverick, Los Angeles, Lakers for Luca, Dantia, Anthony Davis.
Another story.
But, you know, I don't see the Cleveland Browns budging on that.
They're going to send him to the best place in terms of where they're going to get the best overall return.
If that happens to be a championship contender, great.
But there's a chance we could see, you know, Miles Garrett end up in a situation where there's a team
who's maybe kind of rebuilding that has the assets in the capital to do just that.
And I think if Broncos fans were going to look at any Garrett trade, they want Garrett Wilson,
which, you know, he's not readily available to our knowledge.
But that's the one that Broncos country is really clamoring the table for here.
But, you know, look, we want to hear from you, Broncos country.
Your thoughts on Miles Garrish, should the Broncos pick up the phone and at least have some interest?
Where do you stand on this?
Make sure you let us know here locked on Broncos.

Broncos cornerback Pat Sir Tan, the second is already establishing a big time legacy for himself.
But how close could a defensive player of the year award push him to the Hall of Fame?
We're going to discuss that and more on today's episode. Locked on Broncos.
and Broncos Country.
Thanks so much for making us your first listen of the day.

Cody, let's talk about Pat Sartan.
And obviously the case for him as defensive player of the year is pretty obvious based on what we saw this past season.
Pat Sertan shutting people down, creating big time plays.
In fact, I would say he maybe helped turn around the trajectory of the season with that pick six against the Las Vegas Raiders where I think the Broncos were about to go down like 17 to 3 or 17 to 7 or something at some at that point in the game.
And it was not looking good.
And he turned the game around.
That wasn't his only big play of the year.
He shut down countless receivers consistently one of the most dominant corners in the NFL in an era in which the island type cornerbacks are almost non-existent anymore.
Let's talk about his legacy that's already being created, especially if he can win a defensive player of the year award.
I mean, Pat's resume when you look at it this season, probably more impressive than his rookie year.
Like in his rookie year, he even went up against guys like Jamar Chase as a rookie and put up tremendous numbers.
Tyreek Hill put up tremendous numbers.
but really as Pat has evolved,
we've seen him become a little bit more of a dominant corner.
And really, I feel like the scheme evolved this year to where,
remember in 2023,
we're sitting there thinking to ourselves,
it's third and three.
Why is Vanjoseph?
Why is having Pat or Tan line up seven yards off the ball outside leverage
where it's like, go let Pat press guys.
Like Pat wanted to play press a lot in 2023.
He played more press here in 2024.
And he also instilled in the off ball coverage.
I mean, his numbers speak for itself.
He had four interceptions on the season.
And there was one, at one point, down towards the end of the season,
where a number got put out there that said quarterbacks would have more success.
So they'd have a better passer rating against Pat Sartan if they just chose to throw the ball into the ground.
Instead of throwing it his direction, like that right there, in today's NFL, sir,
that's unheard of with that level of play, right?
And you go back to the Pro Bowl games this past week.
The Bronco social media went around and they interviewed a lot of the top players there, right?
the Justin Jefferson's, like, key names, and they asked about what do you think about
Pat or Tan, describe Pastor Tan in one word, and everyone gave him high praise.
This has been trending for Pat to win defensive player of the year here in 2024.
Fox Sports put something out there, and, you know, the Associated Press also had something
out there where it's like, hey, like all the voting, the PFWA voting, it's Pat
or Tan. That's the widespread belief in terms of voting this year.
And when you look at like edge rusher, you know, sack numbers, Trey Hendrickson, leading the
league was 17 and a half. That's impressive, right? But it has always been consistently,
whoever leads the league in sacks, whereas I think it's harder to do what Pastor Tan did in
terms of the level of, you know, play against the level of receivers, guys that he shut down.
We're talking about Garrett Wilson. We're talking about D.K. Metcalfe. Mike Evans, the list goes on
and on. Brock Bowers, who lit the NFL world on fire this year, had zero production against
PS2 on coverage. DeAndre Hopkins, I mean, even at times Travis Kelsey,
like Pat lined up against best.
Jamar Chase lined up against the best and limited those guys in what they were able to do against him.
That in today's NFL is so hard.
It's so impressive.
And if he wins a DPOI award here on Thursday night,
Sarah, he's the second Bronco in team history besides Randy Gratashar to win the award.
He becomes the seventh DB in NFL history to be able to win that award right there.
In my opinion, that solidifies a Hall of Fame case early on in his impressive career.
I think that's a great point and that's a great case that you just laid out, Cody.
It really does speak to this idea of as obviously good as Pat Sartan is.
It's really, it would be a nod to advanced analytics as well for him to win defensive
player of the year because like you said, typically what we see is that, well, the guy who leads
the NFL in Sacks or if a guy has an ungodly number of interceptions, right?
Like, you know, I can't remember who's the defensive back that last, Stefan Gilmore last won the
award and was really great in that regard.
But it does require those like big name statistics, right?
It's like the sacks or the interceptions or, you know, had 200 tackles or something
crazy like that.
Whereas with Pat Sertan, you're looking at yards per completion allowed quarterback rating
when when the ball is thrown into his coverage.
You're looking at yards after the catch per completion.
You're looking at overall completion rate into his coverage.
Like Pat Sertan winning defensive player of the year would be a very intriguing nod.
towards advanced analytics because it's not like he had eight interceptions this past year.
It's not like he had, you know, four pick sixes.
It's not like he was out there every single game racking up, you know, he had somehow
he had five interceptions and 12 sacks and 20 tackles for loss and like doing all these things
like you see at the college level.
That's not what he's doing.
He's not filling up the stat sheet in these particular areas that we're used to seeing
defensive MVP's win.
He's dominating on the stat sheet in other areas.
It's like you want to look at, you know, when the elite players are targeted against Pastor Tan.
You want to look at, okay, how much are teams avoiding throwing the ball at his side of the field, right?
And that speaks to his dominance out there as a player.
And it speaks to the fact that, hey, when he is getting targeted, he's still coming up with plays.
He's still getting past breakups.
He's still not allowing yards after the catch.
Like, he's locked in every single week.
And I kind of feel like this would be not like a makeup call.
a game, but like, I mean, Champ Bailey in 2006 should have won defensive player of the year.
Von Miller in his Denver Broncos career.
It is criminal that he did not win a defensive player of the year award.
It feels like Pat Sir Tan would almost be taking home this bit of hardware for those guys as well
and others throughout the history of this team that have been probably deserving but overlooked
for the reasons that we mentioned, those big name stats.
And on top of that, Denver's defense is one of the best in the NFL, right?
and no disrespect to Trey Hendrickson, who a lot of people,
you ask Bengals fans, are like,
Trey Hendrickson should win it.
He was the best player on the worst defense in the NFL,
and their defensive coordinator got fired.
What does it say that a player on a defense that was so terrible wins defensive
player of the year?
That to me, I think, is a mark against that.
You look at Pat for everything that you had just mentioned there, too.
And you hear how people talk about Stratan.
Like, I think not only will Pat win defensive player of the year,
I think when it comes to the NFL top 100,
when all the players get together,
I guarantee you.
I will put it on it today by saying,
I think a majority of players,
Passer 10 is going to be in the top 10,
maybe even the top 5 of voting this upcoming season
when that releases prior to next season coming out there.
And I think that that would be well deserved.
That recognition is there.
And the way that even receivers, like, you know,
let's talk about this resume as well.
The fact that for three years in a row,
wide receivers who Pat has gone against and other corners
who play his position voted for him as the NFLPA,
first team all pro as voted on by the players putting the power in the hands of the players that says a lot when that respect is there and we hear people now talk about the NFL draft and they talk about corners you're going to hear that there's going to be a rareness when it comes to guys right i think that the michigan cornerback is the only guy i have heard people say this guy is this year's pat ser tan this guy reminds me of pat ser tan pat is extremely long athletic and he's got ridiculous speed for his height he is a prototype there and he's a prototype there and he's a
And he's going to be like the, this guy doesn't come around a long time, like the stature and the characteristics.
That's what I think puts Pat Surtan in a unique category above anybody else, right?
And it's crazy to see how the conversation has evolved from Soss Gardner.
Derek Stingley is obviously one of the top corners.
I think right now in the NFL, I think it is.
Pat Sertan is the best guy.
Derek Stingley's the number two guy.
And there's a handful of other corners that are playing really well.
But man, none of them, in my opinion, are on the level of PS2.
and a defensive player of the year nomination,
and obviously for him winning that,
if that does happen on Thursday night,
in my opinion,
solidifies his Hall of Fame case very early on in his career,
which Ser is so hard to do when you consider today's NFL
with all the rules favoring the offense.
That's why I think makes Pat Sertan special.
Broncos country,
we want to hear from you as well on your thoughts on PS2
and a Hall of Fame campaign for him.
If he does lock up DPOY,
make sure you let us know here,
Lockdown Broncos.
One thing we are going to talk about as well,

He had a lot of high praise for the Broncos rookie quarterback.
I think he had an exceptional year as a young player.
I was able to watch him at Auburn and Oregon.
I got so much respect for him.
Hopefully he continued his journey,
continue to get better and better.
And, you know, they got a heck of a team over there.
He's patient.
He's decisive.
You know how to manage the game.
Take a low risk.
Relies on what he sees.
And knows how to make adjustments.
he's the winner nobody knows making adjustments like chris jones cody dating back to his scouting combine in
2016 especially adjustments on the fly as bo knicks had to do many times during his rookie year
and uh for those that get that reference hey you're real ones you remember um but look i love
hearing chris jones talk like talk like that about bo nix especially when you contrast it with
remember the interview shelby harris did last season after the broncos beat the browns and
And, you know, I know Shelby's probably a little salty still about being traded in the Russell Wilson deal and things like that.
But it just gives you a perspective like, man, Chris Jones has been around Patrick Mahomes and his growth and things like that.
So to hear him say the things he did.
And for those that are just thinking like, man, the chiefs, what are they going to say?
Are they going to go out there and say negative things?
You can tell when somebody's talking about a player and when it's hard for them to say nice things or when it's hard for them to say good things.
you can clearly tell with Chris Jones's comments and the comments that are going to be upcoming from Patrick Mahomes and Steve Spagnolo,
like those,
these comments are genuine.
Like these guys really believe the Broncos got a good one.
Well,
and too,
and Chris Jones also experienced what is like to play against Bo Nix in that first game at Arrowhead where Bo Nix led a game,
what should have been a game winning drive against the Chiefs there in those final seconds.
And unfortunately,
we all know the blocked field goal is the outcome of that.
And, you know,
nobody knows a little bit more about Bo Nix.
defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnolo, who obviously in that first game sent a lot of pressure after Bo Nix.
Bo had a really good game against the Chiefs there on the road and where Denver almost had the upset.
And then, you know, even though the starters didn't play in the week 18 regular season finale,
Steve Spagnolo said to call a defensive game plan against Bo Nix where Boe absolutely tore up the Chief's defense in that regard.
Here's what Spagnolo had to say about Nix.
I'm going to tell you what, he's the real deal.
I mean, listen, he grew as a rookie.
I thought he played pretty good that first game.
He played anything.
Obviously in the last game, he tore us up.
But they got a bright future with him.
I'm really impressive.
He's an impressive player, Cody.
There's no doubt.
It's interesting to hear, like, my perspective,
listening to some of these quotes is like,
man, all the debates that we had over the course of the last year about Bo Nix
and whether or not what we were seeing was actually good,
or whether it was, oh, well, you're wearing orange colored glasses,
or you're drinking the orange Kool-Aid or things like that.
like man i think hearing these guys talk like this it really validates what we had been saying on
this show all season long that what we saw from bow nicks in his rookie year was pretty rare well you
know why is it too and i this is something that frustrates me about social media why is it that
other teams other players other coaches have to say something praiseworthy about bow nicks for
people to be like okay okay now i believe it because they said it versus like use your two
eyes that the good lord gave you and watch him right there were even
after performances against the Panthers, the Falcons, people are like, well, I'm still skeptical.
Like, just enjoy what you're seeing.
And it's the process, right?
And look, I think we saw a lot from Bo Nix to where it's like, all right, hey, you look
at the fact there was no run game for Denver.
The defense fell off at the end of the season.
Bo Nix was the entire offense here for Denver in 2024.
And he did all of this as a rookie and improved.
And of course, has to continue to improve.
What he did was impressive.
So why is it that we have to wait until, okay, this guy said something great about
Well, okay, so now because he said, I believe it, use your eyes and analyze what you're looking at and say, you know what?
He did have a good rookie season.
As a matter of fact, in terms of Broncos franchise history, he had a historic season.
And in the NFL context, he had an historic season as a rookie.
Obviously, surpassing Baker Mayfield for second most passing touchdowns all time by a rookie.
And he led the NFL in terms of rookies in terms of passing touchdowns, overall touchdowns, passing yards, enjoy it.
You know, that's the thing is we're just like victims of the moment where it's like, I don't know if I can enjoy
this Broncos country, sit back and enjoy it.
Now, another player, too, obviously, has been doing this for quite some time.
And obviously, has a Hall of Fame legacy already as is.
Patrick Mahomes had a lot of high price here for Bonnix as well.
Yeah, he's a competitor.
That's the biggest thing that I always look for in quarterbacks.
It's not always about the throwing mechanics.
It's not always about the legs you can run.
And can you compete.
Can you go out there and find ways to win?
And I saw that from him all season long.
And hopefully he don't win a lot of games against us.
But I know he's going to be a great quarterback in this league.
I can't not.
I can't not laugh listening to him.
Every time I hear Patrick Mahomes,
I'll hear is this now.
Yeah, Bo Nix's a really great guy.
I love Patrick Mahomes bringing the heat with Bo Nix
because he said after that game,
you know, in which Bo Nix set up the Broncos to win.
It's not Arrowhead anymore, Cody.
I don't even know what it's called anymore.
I'm still going to call it Arrowhead.
When Bo Nix went on the road in Arrowhead
and set up his team as a rookie to win the game
with what should have gone down as the top drive of the entire season.
Like, facing off against the reigning Super Bowl champions for the first time in his NFL
career, like Patrick Mahomes after the game, understandably goes up to Sean Payton and is like,
hey, you guys, you guys got a good one there, Sean. Yeah.
I bet that's exactly what it sounded like to Sean Payton in the moment.
But I, you know what?
I mean, it's true.
Like, when a guy like that, like Mahomes, who's been able to sleepwalk against,
the Denver Broncos for his entire NFL career when something wakes him up a player like bow
nicks i think it's worth mentioning i think it's worth taking note i mean that that was a great
impression that you did there of uh mahomes there and look here's even another thing too like even
what mahomes said to bow after that game in arrowhead or he's like hey we're going to have many of
these you know like saying hey i believe you're you're probably going to be the one guy that sticks
around for quite some time here the broncos believe that as sean peyton said at the end of
the year presser that they found their guy that they believe they can compete and win with
Those are great signs, you know, ultimately when you're doing it.
At the end of the day, like, even before that last game of the regular season,
you know, I watched and I even took a picture, blew up on social media.
People were freaking out about it, which was weird.
They're like, get away from Bo Nix, Patrick.
They talked for like 35 minutes pregame, you know, before, not like while they were, you know,
going through warm-us, but this was like on-field stuff before you put your pads on and whatnot.
I think there's a tremendous amount of respect between these two guys.
And obviously, you know, for Bo Nix, I think that type of praise is worthy.
You know, you and I can praise Bo Nix as much as we want to, but there are some people who still won't believe it.
They still won't, you know, buy into the hype surrounding him.
As I said earlier, enjoy what you're seeing here with Bo Nix and understand, hey, there's going to be great moments.
There's going to be moments where Bo's still struggles.
I mean, there's games where Patrick Mahomes has struggled.
But it's on this coaching staff in this front office to surround Bo Nix with talent.
Like, if he's struggling, somebody else can carry the mantle a little bit, right?
Whether that's a run game where you have a dynamic running back or you have a defense that's able to
put up points themselves and produce at a high level.
Bo Nix is the guy here for Denver.
And I've been more confident about that than I have any other quarterback that you
and I have been watching on this carousel since Peyton Manning retired.
And Peyton has a lot of belief in Bo Nix as well.
But Broncos, that I'll wrap up today's episode show.
