Starting point is 00:00:00 The Denver Broncos ride the second half search. Thanks to Riley Moss and Jalen Wattle, two game changers in Denver's win on Sunday. You are locked on Broncos. Your daily Denver Broncos podcast. Part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. The Denver Broncos moved to one in one after a second half surge against the Jaguars. That's what we're getting into. We'll tell you why Riley Moss and Jalen Waddle were the fuel behind that surge.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Also why Bo Nix and the Broncos offense got going when it mattered late. And Jonah Coleman, that guy needs more touches. You'll get all that here on today's episode of the show. Brought to you by Fandoo, get $350 in bonus bets guaranteed when you bet $5 every day for seven days. Join all the action at Fandu.com. Broncos country, thanks for making us your first listening here. Sarah, second half surge here for this Broncos team where the momentum toward the end of the first half, it started to feel a lot like last year's game against Jacksonville.
Starting point is 00:01:01 But thank goodness for guys like Riley Moss and James. They were the fuel injectors for the Broncos second half come back. We got to see exactly why the Broncos traded a King's Ransom to get Jalen Waddle this offseason. Eight catches, 138 yards, averaging 17.3 yards a reception in this game. Cody, and proving to be that big play threat, I could not believe how wide open he was in the fourth quarter on that pass from Bo Nix to hit him on that game ending drive where they were able to get into victory formation. Really, really good stuff. All of it made possible today by number 21, Riley Moss, who has been one of the most scrutinized players in Broncos country.
Starting point is 00:01:43 There's no doubt about it. And then you miss some tackles in week one against Kansas City. Obviously, you're going to be absolutely obliterated, you know, by the fan base. And certainly Riley bounced back in a big way, the interception, where he basically ran the route for Parker Washington. Jaguar's trying to force feed him the ball there. And then, of course, you know, had three passes, defense throughout the course of the game overall, including I think even just as big of a play, Cody, the PVU that he had late
Starting point is 00:02:09 in the fourth as the Jaguars were trying to climb back into it. And he came just, I mean, he was screaming. He clicked and closed like with elite level speed and ball skills. So really, really great stuff from these two guys and just kind of embodying the fact that the Broncos, this was a team win here in week two. I felt like their play specifically Jalen and Riley, it kind of facilitated what we call complimentary football between the offense and the defense, and specifically an offense that really needed life, right? Because right before halftime, the Jaguars were driving. They drove down field, they kicked the field goal. And all of a sudden, they get the ball back coming out of half time. It felt like it was going to get away. And then Denver's defense, they settled down a little bit.
Starting point is 00:02:47 I mean, in this game specifically, Sarah, Denver's defense limited the Jaguars. There's three points in the second half. Denver outscored them 17 to three, which is incredible. But they held Trevor Lawrence to a pass rating of 19.8 in the second half alone after he was kind of carving him up. It wasn't like he was just killing them. He was making some surgical throws that we know that you can do. That Jaguar's team's a very good team. But Riley Moss, that play was so big, the pass breakup. And then on that one, the falling platter that, that really key, Riley Moss, PbU,
Starting point is 00:03:16 PS2 gets one on third down to help the Broncos get back onto the field offensively. And then Jalen Waddle comes up with that big catch. But, Sarah, it was you and I talked about this week that we wanted to see the Broncos offense do. Come out here and get Jalen Waddle some targets. And that 49-yard catched the head early on, the game really kind of gave him some momentum, got him down to the one-yard line. And we'll talk about the offense because there were some frustrating moments here. But Jalen to the one-yard line, 49 yards, the explosiveness. We're like, okay, this is exactly why you went and you got this guy.
Starting point is 00:03:44 But 10 targets, Sarah, just seven days ago, six days ago, not even seven, six days ago, he had three targets. And they couldn't get him the football. And this game specifically, they went out and they made it an emphasis to get number 17 the ball. Yeah, you can't go away from any. game this season where Jalen doesn't have at least eight. I mean, I think that's that's kind of where I'm just mentally setting that bar as like at least eight every single game because, yeah, right. And you listen to me.
Starting point is 00:04:12 But that's exactly why what we saw in this game, I mean, whether it was the short, quick passing game, whether it was downfield targets. When you unlock Jalen Waddle, it unlocks everything else for the offense. And so I think we're just starting to scratch the surface of that. Obviously, it was not the cleanest overall offensive operas. But man, when you talk about those big plays being there, when you see a receiver running as wide open as he was late in the fourth quarter, Bo Nix, when has he ever had that? When has he had that in his NFL career? I've never seen a receiver that wide open for the Broncos.
Starting point is 00:04:45 So hats off to them for correcting the mistake that was week one, getting it figured out quickly and doing it in a huge spot here against the Jaguar. So, Cody, I think that plus 177 differential dating back to week 10 or week 111. last season is down to plus 170 now after this game. So you love to see the Broncos bouncing back after that ugly loss in week one. Well, more importantly, two responses from two players, Broncos country said we want more of. They wanted more for Riley Moss. Riley Moss was getting just bombarded this week because of what happened on Monday night
Starting point is 00:05:18 football, some missed tackles, but comes up big here once again. And I'll go on the record of saying, I don't think the Broncos are better off without Riley Moss. I think Riley Moss is a big reason they win this game. And Jay LaMont was the other reason why they went. the extra distance here and ultimately came out and out scored the Jaguar, 17 to 3 in the second half. And Broncos country coming up next.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Bowmanics in the Broncos offense, it was rough sledding for the first half. But then they started to get it going a little bit. Has the formula been unlocked? We'll talk about it here on today's episode of the show. Today's postgame show is brought to you by our friends over there at prize picks. Well, guess what? You're a happy camper because he had eight catches on 10 targets, 138 yards, and he was a catalyst for why the Broncos were able to get some momentum offensively in the second half to outscore the Jaguar 17 to 3. And look, watching the Broncos win, that is a nice boost of energy here. But there are certain flavors that instantly feel like summer. And for a lot of people, those classic red, white, and blue freezer pops, they're right at the top of the list. Sweet cherry, lime, blue raspberry. It's one of those nostalgic summer flavors that everybody recognizes.
Starting point is 00:07:23 And on a hot day here in the Mile High City, one of those pops would have been great. But you know what? I had myself a five-hour energy shot with the new firework freeze. shot flavor blending sweet cherry, zesty lime and electric blue raspberry into one refreshing shot inspired by those iconic summer freezer pops. And maybe the Broncos did at halftime too because they were down 10-3. They needed some energy.
Starting point is 00:07:44 Five-hour energy gives you the energy that you need while bringing you that nostalgic flavor. The firework freeze five-hour energy shot. And it reminds me a lot of when I was a kid playing football with my friends at the park. You'd run home. You'd open up the freezer, grab one of those pops. And now you can get that with you anywhere you go with the firework freeze, five-hour energy shot. So ignite your taste buds with the flavor of the summer. Much needed after another lifeless first half. We're going to talk about what went wrong in the first half and what they got absolutely right on today's bonus episode of the show. A post-game victory episode, Cody. I know we didn't get to experience that after Monday night against Kansas City. It's been a very sour and salty six-day wait for this game against the Jaguars,
Starting point is 00:08:37 which featured a lot of predictions of the Broncos demise. According to my closest circle, a lot of people were kind of consoling me in advance of this game. But to see the Broncos come back out and win, that felt really good. And especially with the way they played in the second half, in the first half, though, offensively, it was sluggish. I mean, they weren't getting much going. It looked discombobulated once again. And they certainly didn't have any sort of flow.
Starting point is 00:09:02 no rhythm to the offense. Coming out at half, Jaguars, field goal drive, 11 plays. It looked like it was just going to be another one. We were already kind of ready for a post game. We're just like, oh, man, we've got to do this whole thing again. And then something clicked. This offense got it together in the best possible way.
Starting point is 00:09:21 When it felt like they started to get a little bit more rhythm here and there in the run game, obviously J.K. Dobbins left this game with a hamstring injury. He did not return. I mean, I saw him after the game in a locker room. He looks fine, but I think it was more. more precautionary, but it really forced the Broncos to get creative, not only just with Jonah Coleman, who we'll talk about here in a little bit, I'm excited to talk about him, but I just think in general, it focused them to kind of just reel in on, hey, this is what we've got to do.
Starting point is 00:09:44 You got more involvement from the tight ends, Evan Ingram specifically as well, getting involved. Nate Adkins catching a touchdown from Bow next. But it felt like Boe started getting in a little bit more of a rhythm here in the second half. He finished the second half. You know, he was 11 to 15 in the second half, 132 passing yards with a 120.2.1 pass rate. He said, he said, seem more decisive than what we saw in the first half. And obviously, he had the interception in the goal line, which was kind of brutal because it takes away opportunities for points. We'll go back and do a film study on that.
Starting point is 00:10:13 But it felt like at that moment, this game was getting away from Denver in that specific situation. But then they come into the second half. They didn't panic, even though that they were down 10-3, they didn't panic coming out of it and say, you know what, we're going to go through. We're just going to, we can't press. We got to trust the process. I know it's a cliche thing to say that.
Starting point is 00:10:31 But they did. They came out there and they played complimentary football. They got Jonah, I mean, they got Jonah Coleman going a little bit. Tyler Badea, I thought made some nice plays for the Broncos. You know, in the past catching game, he had some nice runs here and there. But it was really just settling into the offensive flow that I think was the difference. So I think the biggest key here, Sarah, after shaking off that rough first half, have the Broncos maybe found a little bit of a formula?
Starting point is 00:10:53 And if so, what could that be here for getting off to a faster start early on than just the second half? Because we'll be very honest. The win is great. but the offense cannot play the way that they did in the first half against a team like the Rams or a team like the 49ers or the charges and whatnot for the rest of the stretch, it's going to get a lot tough. Yeah, what was it that I think we all called for throughout the whole week? Well, obviously, Jalen Waddle, more of Jalen Waddle was the number one thing we called for.
Starting point is 00:11:16 But just be bullies in the running game. And we saw that finally in the fourth quarter, that four-minute drive. I know we're going to talk about Jonah specifically coming up, but just in terms of the overarching, I think that type of bully ball, where you're seeing, twin minors pick dudes up and move them out of the way. Where you're seeing the Broncos, everybody getting involved at every level. I mean, they're not just getting to their spots. They are putting guys on the ground in the running game.
Starting point is 00:11:42 That is exactly the type of physicality this team has been missing. And that was what they needed desperately in the second half of a game like this. I thought the D-line did a great job of playing bully ball as well and getting in Trevor Lawrence's face. And then the offense kind of matched that intensity. as the game went along. So I think that is the formula for sustained success is make sure that you have the ability to lean on that bully ball running game at any point in time and let Bo do what
Starting point is 00:12:11 he does off of that because when he's out on the move, when he can make throws on the run, when he's not really got pressure in his face on play action, we know that Bo is one of the best quarterbacks on the run in the NFL. And yes, I think the second half was less of a outlier and more of something to build on as this team goes into week three against the Rams. Yeah, a lot of people were writing their bribituaries in the first half of this game here on the Broncos. Sarah, I want to point out something I think was very defining here with this offense, right? Because I think you can relate certain things to it.
Starting point is 00:12:41 The Broncos first couple of drives of this game, right? First three drives ended up in punts. But their first two drives, what killed them, what set them backwards? They had two key penalties in their first two drives that put them in third and 11 and then third and 15. And then from that point, it really limits and handcuffs what you can do offensively. There was that trend there. But after that's there, after their first three drives went ended in punts, they went field goal. The bad interception in the goal line, 100%.
Starting point is 00:13:09 I can't ignore that. But they moved the ball down field. It was an eight-play 63-yard drive. I mean, it was an eight-play-76-yard drive. The last drive there, they had the field goal was eight-play-sixty-three yards. Then they have an eight-play-50-yard drive that ends in a field goal. Then a 10-play-64-yard drive that ends in a touchdown. So realistically, outside of the interstate,
Starting point is 00:13:28 interception, every single one of their other possessions minus the victory formation or scoring drives that led to points. That is the complimentary football that this team, they need to be successful. But the biggest key for them getting there is the fast starts. And Sarah, the number one thing that kills you in fast starts were penalties. We saw it on Monday night. We saw it here in this game specifically. They shook that off. They had six penalties going in a half time, but they shook it off. And they found a way to just trust their process, trust the game plan and say, you know, we're not going to press. We're just going to go out there.
Starting point is 00:13:58 We're going to do what we came out here south to do. We're going to get J-Law on the ball. We're going to try to pick and choose our spots. We have third and manageable. We're going to run the ball and get a first down. They did that. And I was much more pleased with their third down efficiency down the stretch here for this game. Because they started off one of six on third down.
Starting point is 00:14:14 And I believe, if I'm not mistaken, they finished this game collectively, four of 11, so not necessarily great. They only converted three more. And they were a little bit more efficient in the second half there. But penalties in avoiding them are going to be key for this team. going forward. That is the key, I think, for getting it going, is avoiding these self-inflicted mistakes that we've seen plagued them early on in this game, but also all throughout the Kansas Chiefs game. And that's exciting. And we're going to continue to find a ways that this
Starting point is 00:14:40 Broncos team can build off of that. But Broncos country coming up next, we're going to talk about something we're super excited. But outside of a victory, Jonah Coleman needs more touches, and he might have unlocked that for himself after Sunday's game. Matt Terry here from the Lockdown Lions podcast. And the biggest question is will the Broncos give him that? His answer to that? They absolutely should. Thanks for Rock with us here on the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Broncos country.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Thanks for making us your first listen. Also for making locked on the number one sports podcast network in the country. Sarah, let's talk about the rookie runnerback Jonah Coleman, right? Because if people are hearing, and let's say they didn't get a chance to watch this game, but they're hearing us talk about Jonah Coleman, and they go up and they pull up the box square.
Starting point is 00:17:34 They're going to say 10 carries for 39 yards. What's so special about that? I think a lot of people that didn't get a chance to watch this game, they missed out on something that we're very excited about here with Jonah Coleman. And it's the fact that you saw him step up in a big moment and you saw him play smart to the point. Sean Payton, after the game, told us that last drive, you didn't feel a rookie. And he said that about Jonah before in training camp. We've seen that translate to a game, but it's rattling off a couple of big runs,
Starting point is 00:18:01 including one off the left. sideline where he instead of going, he could have had a wide open touchdown. He slides because the Jaggars are out of timeouts and it allows the Broncos to get into victory formation to run out the clock. That's a smart play. But he also picked up guys in the past protection department as well after J.K. Dobbins injury. Yeah, pass protection.
Starting point is 00:18:20 Cody, he was excellent when he was called upon to catch passes out of the backfield. And you mentioned it. His 10 carries for 39 yards isn't going to impress anyone on the box score, although I'm sure anybody who played him in fantasy. You know, they got their touchdown in this game, got a couple of receptions. But I think in fantasy going forward, you're going to want Jonah Coleman. Because to me, and I'm making a mountain out of a molehill here, Cody, I think Jonah Coleman is running back one for the Denver Broncos.
Starting point is 00:18:46 I don't think you look back. I think you give him full go, full speed ahead. Put wind in this guy's sales and let him be your number one back because he does everything. He does everything and he does everything well. What we saw in this game on that final drive, the four minute offense for the Denver Broncos because keep in mind, the Broncos absolutely did not have this game wrapped up. They needed a drive. They needed that final drive where obviously Jonah Coleman got involved, Jalen Wattle got involved.
Starting point is 00:19:14 He had a run of six yards on that drive. He had a run of 12 yards on that drive. He had another run of 12 yards on that drive, which you just referenced where he bounced it out to the left side and then slid down effectively ending the game for the Broncos. He did everything on that drive, Cody. And he showed in the fourth quarter of this game that the Broncos can rely on him in huge moments. That's a good defense that they're going up against. That defense had a lot of success getting after the quarterback last week. That defense has absolutely been tough for, I mean,
Starting point is 00:19:42 for a lot of teams. Their defensive coordinator outstanding, they threw a lot at Bow Nix. They threw a lot of Jonah Coleman. He did a fantastic job. I think he's RB1 going forward for this team. Whoa, okay. I mean, I don't think that's a crazy, crazy take, especially if JK, once again, hamstrings could be tricky. The Broncos have two running backs right now. They're dealing with Hammies, right? RJ Harvey didn't play in this game. How did you feel? When we've got the notification, we found he was unlikely to play. How did you feel about that? Because I was a little worried. I was like, okay, JK's going to get the ball, you know, the primary bell cow role, which is good. That's what he should. He had 10 carry. Same with Jonah. But I was a little
Starting point is 00:20:19 worried. They weren't going to use Jonah primarily in the run game because Tyler Badee was going to be active. And I, hats off. I'm going to clap. Tyler Bade did a great job here today. Now the Broncos didn't have too much success when run the ball with him, but he had a nice catch. and run out of the backfield. He did a couple of other things in the return department that I felt like were valuable. But Jonah Coleman showcased that, in my opinion, Sarah, you have to find a way to feed three backs. When RJ is healthy, when JK's healthy and Jonah's here, Jonah can't just go back to the sideline. No, no, absolutely not.
Starting point is 00:20:49 And to your question, you know, I was bummed when we found out that RJ wasn't going to be playing because he was one of the only guys who had a good game against the Jaguars last year. He was fantastic against Jacksonville. And so I think that, yes, he adds that dynamic element and he can be that weapon in the passing game. But certainly you saw against Jacksonville, hey, Jonah Coleman can do everything for you. And so if there's any glimmer of hope for the running game, I think the most we just saw what we saw from Coleman in the fourth quarter, Cody is the most complete back that the Broncos have had in it. I know it's just one quarter, but that's the most complete back we've seen in orange and blue in the last handful. We've seen great games from Dobbins. Don't get me wrong.
Starting point is 00:21:32 He ran for over 100 in multiple games last year. We've seen great games from RJ Harvey. He had multiple games over 100 yards of scrimmage last season. But what Jonah Coleman did in the fourth quarter of this game was you wore a defense down. You crack some face masks and pass protection. And you caught pass as you caught all three of your targets out of the backfield. He's that dude. And he gave us the mile high salute for his first NFL touchdown, Cody.
Starting point is 00:21:57 It's written in the stars. Give Jonah Coleman the football. I was asking myself, how come they did get him in earlier on that first goal line series where Denver ran at three straight times? J.K. Dobbins was gassed.
