Starting point is 00:00:49 So you never miss out on all your Broncos news, content coverage analysis, and more every single day all year long. This is the place to be. I'm Cody Rourke, Bronco's reporter for Mile High Sports. And I'm Sarah Bedinger's site expert at predominantly orange.com. Our training camp is Preview continues here today as we focus on the tight end position here. We'll go through why Evan Ingram is probably the most important offseason edition here for Bo Nix and this Broncos' offense at a position of need. We'll highlight what his addition means for this team and what the room looks like behind him. Plus on top of that, could this tight end group become a Swiss Army knife approach? Could it have a multifaceted approach with guys who can catch and pass block relatively
Starting point is 00:01:31 well? And on top of that, we'll talk about the Broncos potential seventh round drafts. and his development, Caleb Loner, and what type of impact he could have for the Broncos as a rookie. We'll go through all that here on today's episode of the show. Sarah, I love doing these training camp previews just because it gives us a chance before the action, before the chaos, before everyone watches every rep of practice. We could talk about maybe some of these superlatives surrounding these guys here beforehand and give a little bit of a preview,
Starting point is 00:01:56 or maybe even a prediction as to how things will go, what these guys in this room will mean. Evan Ingram, Sarah, you can make the argument, you know, outside of the Broncos editions on defense, you can make the argument that Evan Ingham is probably the most important offseason addition here for Bo Nix, Sean Payton, and this Broncos offense specifically. Yeah, it's a huge addition, Cody.
Starting point is 00:02:17 It's something that I think that everybody went into the offseason. You know, we were debating. Is running back the bigger need or is tight end the bigger need? Ultimately, didn't really matter because I think you had to make major changes at both. But the Broncos ultimately brought in the most experienced and prolific player at tight end. This is the biggest upgrade they've made to the offense in terms of a veteran player coming in. Maybe since Sean Payton came aboard, Cody. I know we've had offensive linemen come in, but skill guys, is this certainly up there. And Evan Ingram is a proven player. There's been a lot
Starting point is 00:02:52 of debate and discussion about how good this guy actually is. You've mentioned this before. We've mentioned this before on the show nearly set the NFL record for receptions in a season by a tight end just two years with Jacksonville when he had 114 catches. Now, we may not get that out of Ingram this year, but certainly when you look at what the Broncos had last year with the leader in receptions being Lucas Crawl with 19 catches and Adam Troutman leading the tight end position with 188 yards, it's a far cry from where this team has been over the last couple of seasons,
Starting point is 00:03:25 Chris Manhart's being in the group back in 2023. Evan Ingram brings a dynamic to the offense that everybody is going to benefit. fit from. Well, if I had to set the over under on the amount of reception is by the tight end position this year, I'm definitely smashing the over on 19. I think Evan Angel will have anywhere between 65 to 80, I think catches this season, which would be good because if you factor in the Broncos production this past year at tight end, could you imagine if they had someone who's just athletic enough to make plays be a red zone threat, but have 80 catches, right? And I think with defenses, how they're playing this offense and how they're playing
Starting point is 00:04:01 against Cortland Sutton trying to protect against Marvin Mims. You know how many opportunities are going to be there for Bo Nix to just throw it short here to Evan Ingram and then he can have the ability to do yards after the catch, especially if he isolates against an inside linebacker. I think Evan Ingram is going to be like the easy button on the middle of the field portion of this offense here for Denver. I agree with you. I think his addition to the room is important and he will obviously be the unquestioned
Starting point is 00:04:24 starter here for the Broncos offense and Sean Payton here going into obviously the season. And then let's talk about Adam Troutman, who I feel like is the second roster lock right now. I mean, you talk about a guy who's a veteran presence, very good as a blocker. I mean, there were times of the Broncos were asking him to block guys like Max Crosby one-on-one, which I would never say like, hey, let's just put Adam Troutman against the, you know, Max Crosby or Miles Garrett one-on-one. But he's a guy who can hold his own in a double-team chip situation there, right? He's consistent with that.
Starting point is 00:04:53 And I think he's underrated as a pass catcher. I mean, he had the one-handed touchdown catch last year from Bow Nix, National tight end day, he kind of went off there. And he proved at times he can be a yard after the catch threat. I mean, the Kansas City Chiefs game in Arrowhead. I mean, the Chief's defense, they're like, these guys don't run routes. These guys aren't involved in the offense. We're just going to maybe allocate two linebackers on one crossing pattern.
Starting point is 00:05:17 And then block, block, block, decoy, decoy, decoy, set up a crossing route where he runs for, I think, 32, 33 yards on a catch and run across the middle of the field. I think Adam Troutman, with the addition to Evan Ingram, I think more past catching opportunities will be open for Troutman on third down going forward here versus when he was just the tight in one for this Broncos team. I think that right now with these two guys, I think that's a solid two-man group there. I do too. And I think that there's untapped potential with even the guys that were on the roster last year
Starting point is 00:05:48 because you just didn't see a ton of those chances to create after the catch for guys in this Denver offense. It was very much a, let's get the ball from point A to point B. type of offensive attack through the air, in my opinion, throughout the course of the season. I know there were the screens for the wide receivers and things like that, but in terms of attacking downfield, it was way less about yak and way more about air yards for the quarterback. So to me, there is untapped potential there with guys like Troutman, especially as an outlet in the passing game. But yeah, he's the Broncos best blocker.
Starting point is 00:06:21 And that is a huge asset that he brings to the table. How many times have we heard Sean Payton say, you just know what you're getting from Adam Troutman. You know what he brings to the table. You're not going to be surprised in any way, good or bad. You know, he's just so consistent. And he's the, the guy that they can rely on week in and week out. He plays a very underrated role on this team. Similar is Nate Adkins, right, who played 420 snaps last year, 280 special team snaps as well. So a very valuable player for this roster. The question mark and wildcard maybe, Lucas Crowell, right, who was the best player at Broncos OTAs last year.
Starting point is 00:06:59 A little homage to the joke that Sean Peyton had so much fun with over the course of the off season. But in all seriousness, Crowell, can he be better? And can he make some more noise? Because I don't think we can completely write that off either. Yeah, no, 100%. He's got the size. He's got the athleticism. He's also got, I think, deceptively good
Starting point is 00:07:19 speed, but he just didn't have a large sample size in the office. I mean, of course, he led the team in receptions at tight end. But, I mean, it wasn't, you didn't see a lot of downfield stuff. You saw a lot of just short outlet, you know, he's going to run a set route. You're going to get him the ball. He's going to get three yards on it. Okay, more manageable down and distance maybe coming up on the next play. There wasn't this emphasis, I think, to get him downfield vertically, whereas in 2023, I mean, the Broncos were running him on wheel routes against the Buffalo Bills. And Russell Wilson didn't see him. You can see the
Starting point is 00:07:50 coaches on the sideline freaking out about that. And then you saw the instance, obviously, where they went to crawl on the last play against the Houston Texans in 20. 23 and it's like rush just through a jump ball there. And obviously you want a guy with height to be able to come down with it. But it wasn't the right route. It wasn't the right designer. The play call there that Sean Payton had is obviously information has come out about that. I just look at this room and you factor in the addition of Caleb Loner now.
Starting point is 00:08:13 And there's obviously, you know, Caden pre-scorn who's added to the mix. I wouldn't invest too much in pre-scorn as an option. Maybe he'll end up on the practice squad. But I think if a guy like Lucas Crowell doesn't make the roster, I think he goes to the practice squad. I think he stays in the mile high city. Causeon does like him. And it's just you need to continue to ascend and grow. And sometimes the position changes and it can throw a wrench into your plans as a player.
Starting point is 00:08:37 I can interfere with a lot of stuff. But Caleb Loner is very exciting to me as well. Obviously, the size that he has six foot seven. He runs fast. Not a great route runner when you talk about being able to plant and cut quickly inside or the outside. But man, this is a guy who I think can be a threat in the flat. He can be a threat in the goal line. can be a vertical threat for you, which is exciting.
Starting point is 00:08:58 Can he continue to refine as a route runner and develop in that regard? That's going to be a fun question to watch here. I mean, the Broncos tight-in room going at a training camp. I like it a lot better right now than I did last year, Sarah. I'm curious to see if Broncos country feels the same here. But our conversation is going to continue here, Broncos Country. We dive deep into the vision of this tight-in room. What does it look like?
Starting point is 00:09:18 And why does it have a Swiss Army knife type of feel to it? We'll break that down. A much more on today's episode of the show. Starting point is 00:10:38 Last-minute tickets, lowest price, guaranteed. The Denver Broncos have a lot of different guys who do a lot of different things at the tight end position, but I don't know, Cody. It's going to be interesting to find out if one of these guys goes down, who would end up taking their place? There's a lot of question marks, a lot of things that we need to discuss in terms of what these Broncos tight ends bring to the table approaching training camp. And Broncos country, shout out to all of you that make us your first listen of the day every single day. We appreciate you so much.
Starting point is 00:11:09 Hit subscribe if you haven't done so already. And go find Lockdown Broncos on TikTok as well, short form content for your main page there. Cody, let's talk about this. I kind of put this out there. The Broncos tight end group is like a Swiss Army knife, right? You've got the joker, Evan Ingram. He's got the past catching abilities that you need at the position in today's NFL. Adam Troutman, he's the blocker.
Starting point is 00:11:32 Nate Adkins, he's kind of the jack of all trades out there, the Swiss Army knife within the Swiss Army knife, right? And then you've got Caleb Loner, who is more of the upside type of guy. He's kind of the, hey, you don't hardly ever see this part of the Swiss Army knife used, but you never know when you might need to bust it out or, you know, when it could be something that's really useful. to you. I just think, you know, as crude as the analogy might be, it just feels like these guys all do different things well. And I don't necessarily know that that's always going to be a good thing, because say Evan Ingram goes down, what the heck do the Broncos do? Yeah, that's a great question. And it really makes you wonder, how did the Broncos envision this tight end room playing out?
Starting point is 00:12:14 You know, I still think that there could be a chance that as the preseason winds on, you get to final roster cuts. I would not be shocked if the Broncos, look to the waiver wire or they look at other guys who've gotten cut around the league at roster cut time just to maybe see where things are at. I'm sure Denver's going to pay attention and joint practices to whoever the San Francisco 49ers have at several positions. They may be eyeing to see if there's an upgrade or a potential guy that they could snag after roster cuts. The Arizona Cardinals will see how things factor in the equation there. But I mean, you make a great point. Like if Evan Ingram does go down, I mean, Sarah, you look at it right now.
Starting point is 00:12:48 It doesn't seem like there's a guy in this roster that can plug in and do what Evan is going to be asked to do here from a past catching standpoint at that position. Evan Ingram is a great route runner for a guy who plays in line, offset in the slot on the outside. This is a guy who I watched in OTAs in the off season program saying, okay, this guy is going to add a nice little wrinkle here to this offense because he's more elusive at tight in than anybody the Broncos have had in quite some time and say arguably since Noah Fant.
Starting point is 00:13:16 So that's going to be an interesting development to watch here. Does Denver end up adding a guy to this mix? Or are they saying, hey, if. Ingram goes down, all right, we're just going to go back to what we did last year and just say, Adam, you're the number one guy. You're going to primarily block. We'll release you on a few routes from time to time and we'll bring back Nate Adkins. You know, stuff that they have done that has worked.
Starting point is 00:13:35 But, Sarah, if that is the goal, you have to understand if Evan Ingram goes down, your production at tight end is going to be just as bad, if not worse, as last year. Because then teams aren't going to respect that element of the field anymore. Now, that's up for guys like Troutman, Adkins, Crowe, and Caleb Loner to come in and say, hey, no, we're going to challenge that narrative. But, I mean, on paper right now, it doesn't seem like the Broncos have any kind of option B in the event Ingram does suffer an injury. And I think the same is true of Adam Troutman, right? Who's the guy that can go out there and do what he does for the offense? Maybe Nate Adkins can more so than I assume.
Starting point is 00:14:15 but to me, Trotman is clearly the best blocking tight end that you have. And I think that he brings that kind of all around value as being able to play in line, whereas Nate Adkins is more of the guy who moves around the offensive formation quite a bit. And what we haven't even really touched on is the fact that maybe he plays a little bit more of that fullback position as well this season. So I just don't, I don't know. Like if any of those top two guys goes down,
Starting point is 00:14:44 I don't see as the Broncos have a clear solution to, all I just plug this guy in because he can be the, I mean, I think Evan would have to do stuff that he's not necessarily always comfortable with if Troutman goes down and vice versa. And Adkins would not be able to be used to his fullest capacity should he need to step in for Troutman. So it's one of those things to where you've got all these little pieces
Starting point is 00:15:07 on a chess board that all do different things. They can only move certain ways, right? It just feels like that's kind of what the Broncos tight end group is right now. I feel like the Broncos tight end group would be, they would be in a better situation. Like if Evan Ingram's healthy and let's say Adam Troutman's suffering injury missed time, I feel more confident in whoever steps in for Troutman than I do anybody's filling in right now for Evan Ingram. Though I will say, you know, a name to keep an eye on here, I think Caleb Loner, the rookie, yes, he doesn't have a lot of football to his repertoire in terms of overall snaps played.
Starting point is 00:15:41 but the thing that I've noticed from him, and I'm curious to see if this translates when the pads comes on, it seemed like there was an emphasis by the Broncos. They'd get him involved in the passing game, but primarily, like, I think they were trying to get him more reps in the blocking department where I like some of the schemes that they're drawing up with him as a blocker specifically that I can't necessarily share,
Starting point is 00:16:02 but I'll say, like, if he does it well with pads on the way I saw him do it in the offseason program, I'm going to be excited. I think that would be like Denver would have a plug-in play guy there that could do that job that Sean Payton is asking for because he's got a good base to him. You know, I think he can anchor down. I think obviously being six, seven, that's a little bit of a challenge because we always say in football, lowest man wins. And if you're blocking someone who's evidently shorter than you may be explosive and a little bit
Starting point is 00:16:28 powerful, you really have to have a good anchor to be able to manage that type of rush. So I'm curious to see how he evolves here as a blocker as things go forth. interesting enough. You mentioned that Nate Adkins played over 420 snaps last year. It's crazy to think that Nate Adkins played more snaps than Marvin Mims offensively last season. Right. And then in that game where Bo Nix, what was it, when Bo through that game winning, or the game tying touchdown to Marvin against the Bengals,
Starting point is 00:16:59 it was interesting that the guy that was in there was Michael Burton, right? Like just the personnel that Sean had on the field in that situation I found to be, I think it was, wasn't it Michael Burton and Nate Adkins? At the same time. Jordan Humphrey, I think. I'm pretty sure you see those guys come into frame after he catches the ball. He's like, forget it. Marvin's down there somewhere.
Starting point is 00:17:18 It's like, wait, Marvin, 5'10, 511 Marvin Mims. And of course, he goes up, Moss is the two defenders. Go for two next time, Sean. That's all we're saying here. But the tight end group, Sarah, I want to ask you this, do you feel better about the tight end group right now as compared to when we were talking about this position last year going into training camp?
Starting point is 00:17:37 Yeah, 100%. I think with Evan Ingram in the mix, even with his injury history and the concerns you may have about that, you have to, at this point, you have to be excited about what he potentially brings to the table. And the addition of Caleb Loner as well, I know that feels like a down the road sort of thing, but maybe like you said, maybe he does get more chances than we assume. And then also like Lucas Krull taking that next step, maybe maybe something happens with Ingram being out there at practice. they're drawing up certain plays that all of a sudden now Crowell becomes unlocked because there's different things the offense is doing that he does well that he can actually step into as opposed to all right we're just trying to utilize this guy's athleticism that's where i think so much of our discussion about offensive personnel is dependent upon Sean Peyton and his staff getting
Starting point is 00:18:27 these guys equipped to do what they do best because we saw them let's just be straight up about it they failed in the first half of last year with Marvin mems I think that a lot of last year was a failure with Troy Franklin. I think that we did not see Devon Valle maximize. We did not see Lucas Crowell get the opportunities after the catch that he should have. And the same could be said even of a guy like Adam Troutman. And so there's so many different areas of this passing game that need to be improved schematically within the offense that maybe Evan Engram's role with this team opens things up for somebody like Crowe who is physical after the catch. He's ball dominant. He's got athletic traits.
Starting point is 00:19:06 So maybe writing him off is even premature. But if he steps up, if Crowe steps up and does anything in the preseason and training camp that excites us, man, that adds a wrinkle to this position group that I think nobody's really seeing coming at this point. We'll see if it all plays out that way. That would be an exciting development here for this offense and specifically for a tight-in room that really lacked the production and excitement level that I think usually you look at across the NFL. You're like at least other teams, even bad offenses, are getting more production out of tight end than Denver is.
Starting point is 00:19:38 So we'll see if that trend changes here in 2025 here. But we're going to get into the biggest question surrounding the Broncos tidal room going into 2025, including why Caleb Loner isn't a simple draft and stash guy and why he may have a bigger impact than most think here on today's episode, Locked on Broncos. The Broncos tight end room has a lot of questions. And we're going to go through every player and answer the biggest one surrounding them going into the 2025 NFL season and training camp is our position.
Starting point is 00:20:10 Preview series continues. We want to say thank you once again to everyone in Broncos country. Thanks for always rocking with us, making us your first listen. We appreciate you so much. We'll have you covered every step of the way through training camp and throughout the entire regular season. We got you covered here. Continue our conversation. You're getting to our biggest questions of this room here.
Starting point is 00:20:27 Let's start off with Evan Ingram. And I think as we look on a player by player basis, this one is probably the easiest one here is can Evan Ingrams stay healthy. I think Denver is banking so much on him being recovered fully from what he dealt with last year. It was a hamstring early on. And then he had the shoulder, which he had surgery on. That is completely checked out. He's 100% cleared, ready to rock and roll, look great in the offseason program. But now the hope is that Bo Lowry can work his magic to keep this guy specifically healthy. And that's something that'll continue to monitor. Obviously, the season goes on. But if he stays healthy, how big is this for the Broncos offense in your opinion,
Starting point is 00:21:03 and Sarah. It's the biggest offense. It's the biggest addition to the offense for, I don't know, the last handful of years that I can recall, Cody. It's certainly a guy that gets you excited about the potential for the dominole effect within the offense that him being out there is going to create better matchups for everybody else. It gives you, like you said, the easy button. It can help you convert third downs. It can help you get drives started. It can help you in the red zone. It can help you in short yard. It's situate. He can convert, you know, those long third and 13s where you need somebody to go make a play and create five, six yards after the catch.
Starting point is 00:21:39 Evan Ingram can do all these things. And I just feel like he's grown so much as a pro since coming out of Ole Miss where the narrative about him was Evan Ingram's just a glorified wide receiver, right? He's just this big. Little did people know at the time when they're calling him a glorified wide receiver that the role that he would play in the NFL would be something the entire league kind of a adapted to over time that players like him who, yeah, you may not have a middle bar down your face mask and be just smacking people in the mouth as a blocker.
Starting point is 00:22:13 But man, what you can do in the passing game as the league has evolved, Evan is great at that. And he has strong hands and he can do everything well at the catch point after the catch. So Cody, I think that I just don't know that everybody in Broncos country has been able to fully appreciate how big this move is until we get. to see him out there on the field. Now we're going to see him here very shortly is the Broncos kickoff training camp July 22nd Veterans Report.
Starting point is 00:22:40 And obviously, Sarah will have you covered. I'll be on my honeymoon. But in Broncos country, I'll be back July 31st for training camp here. Sarah's going to have you covered every step the way, including a daily Evan Ingram outlook, I'm sure will come your way here on Locked on Broncos. Let's get to the next guy here in terms of, you know, I think we've kind of talked about a little little bit. What is the contingency planning the event?
Starting point is 00:23:00 Evan Ingram goes down. I think we've highlighted that a little bit with maybe the Broncos go back to what they did last year with Adkins and Troutman as those primary guys. Can Caleb Loner throw his name to the mix? Is there another guy the Broncos can add here? But I really want to focus here on Caleb Loner because there is this line of thought. I think when you look at the, you know, Broncos fans and player development, knowing that in mind, like that's an emphasis for this team. A lot of people believe that Caleb Loner is just a draft and stash type of player here for Sean Payton. he's not going to necessarily be on the 53-man roster just to take up a spot,
Starting point is 00:23:33 like player development will be important. But I think from what I've seen early on, I would be shocked if Loner doesn't have a role in the offense in the rotation at Tide-end this upcoming season. I think that's going to be fascinating to see, especially because we know, too, that he can get up there and maybe block some kicks. I mean, the Broncos have other uses for him besides just can you play tight-end? Can you go out there and block?
Starting point is 00:23:56 Can you maximize the targets that we give you? He can play some special teams. So I think that's an interesting wrinkle. I think at a minimum, he's going to be on the roster. And we might have to see him pop up on the weekly inactivs, Cody, because I think the Broncos have decided when they drafted him instead of trying to go recruit him as an undrafted free agent. By drafting him, they essentially said, like,
Starting point is 00:24:20 we're not letting other teams get this guy. We're going to develop him. There's been way too much talk about Jimmy Graham out of Sean Payton's mouth, no less for Caleb Loner to be a cut after the preseason. I think the Broncos are going to live with whatever results they get this offseason and in the preseason and joint practices, and he's going to be on the team. So anybody that's out there that likes to make hypothetical 53-man rosters, I think if Caleb Loner is not on your 53-man roster,
Starting point is 00:24:47 I think that you're going to be wrong because he is going to be on this team. The Broncos are going to see this one through for at least a year or two. and I'm excited about that, Cody. I think that he has intriguing upside to where a lot of seventh round picks, you're just kind of throwing, you're throwing darts at a board in the dark anyway. You might as well go after a guy that has big time upside like Caleb Loner. Well, the Broncos have had some success with some of their seventh round picks over time.
Starting point is 00:25:13 Jonathan Cooper being won. I think last year, Devon Valey. I'm trying to think of another seventh round. Forsyth. Forsyth, yeah. Forsyth stepped in. And I thought the run game was better when Forsycey stepped in. So there is a trend there of Denver.
Starting point is 00:25:25 hitting on their seventh round picks and those guys having an impact. You know, Forsyth wasn't necessarily at the beginning of the year was, hey, there's an injury to loop. Now you got to step in and get some snaps here. And he proved to be valuable on offense. And of course, Forsyth is, you know, people are going to, you know, remember the block against Kansas City and the special teams aspect. And I think that'll be, you know, people are always going to hold that negative
Starting point is 00:25:47 mark against him. And yeah, it's rough. But Forsyth is a great guy, hard worker inside that locker. And that team's got his back. And I think the Broncos country should definitely move. on from that because I think when you watch him offensively, when he stepped in for Wattenberg, I loved how he played. I think he was one of those guys here. You and I were saying, hey, we're going to get a shout out here to Alex Forsyth, what he was able to do because he's
Starting point is 00:26:08 protecting on the interior. You're not getting pressure inside that A gap and the run game on the inside run game. It's opening up a little bit. Now, I just think that's where Forsyth, he understands how to attack leverages and angles to seal blockers off. Whereas I think Wattenberg is more of that power style of blocker, the more physical strength guy. Forsyth, you know, once again there. And Caleb Loner maybe have that impact as a seventh rounder. If he's playing a special team, Sarah, and let's say, you know, maybe he catches, 20 passes this year, I'd say that's a huge success in terms of how you're using him.
Starting point is 00:26:42 And let's say out of those maybe 15 or 20 catches, he has two touchdowns. I think that's a massive success for a seventh round pick here for Denver. When you factor in who's ahead of him on the day, chart and how that's going to go. But can he also help the Broncos in the run blocking game? Can he spring some guys open? I think when Denver wants to go with their heavy 13 personnel and they want guys to block to open up the run game, I would almost bet money that you're going to see
Starting point is 00:27:06 Adam Trotman, Caleb Loner on the field in this role. And maybe even Nate Atkins, maybe those would be the three tight ends when they go 13. I think that's just going to open things up here for Denver in that run game with J.K. Dobbins, with R.J. Harvey, whoever else is in the mix. I think that the tight-end position will be drastically improved this upcoming season from a production standpoint than what they've had in the last handful of years. I'll make the bold prediction saying since they had no offense at tight-end, which really Noah was the last productive tight-end that Devers had on this roster. I know even Broncos Country in the offseason were saying, hey, can they maybe welcome him back? Could they trade for him for Seattle?
Starting point is 00:27:40 You never, ever know in the NFL. We'll see how things pan out here.
