How might the Denver Broncos rotation and wide receiver be impacted by the return of Josh Reynolds?
And which wide receiver could he force out of the rotation?
We'll break that down and much more here on today's brand new episode, Locked on Broncos.

down here on today's episode of the show.
You know, Broncos country wants to know which position group
can improve the most here in the second half part of the schedule.
The Broncos playing good football right now.
That's a very good question.
We'll also talk about the Broncos running back position and competition.
The snaps between all of the backs seem a little uneven.
But is there a true committee approach?
We'll break that down.
But we'll open things up and kick things off with the return of Josh Reynolds
anticipated to happen this week here.
And if that does happen, when that does happen,
what does it mean for the Broncos wide receiver rotation?
You get all that here on today's episode, Lockdown Broncos.
Today show is brought to our friends over there at Price Picks.

All right, let's kick off the action here.
Broncos country wants to know, you know, we open things up in our mailbag.
I open it up over there at Mile High Sports.
And I want to get some of those really good questions involved here on the show.
And we got one in in terms of the Broncos wide receiver rotation.
I know this was asked as well.
in our lockdown Broncos comments from one viewer and listener of the show.
Asking about Denver's wide receiver rotation with Josh Reynolds, who returned to practice last week,
was a full participant Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
I think the move and the vibe right here is that he's probably going to make his full-time return here
into the starting lineup or into the rotation on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Last week, it was just his first week back at practice, obviously since going on IOR with the hand injury.
and obviously after being the victim of a, you know,
a very traumatic event there,
the shooting early on.
Thankfully, he's okay.
But the thing with Reynolds here,
I think we have to imagine,
okay,
I don't think Denver was in a position last week where there was a roster move
that they wanted to make clearly,
just for a moment,
like in that moment right there,
say, okay, hey, who are you releasing just so we can bring
Josh Reynolds back here?
Because right now they're evaluating everything from a roster standpoint.
Sair pointed it out last week.
Now, after the NFL trade deadline,
NFL teams, if they release a player,
even if he's a vested veteran, they have to go through the waiver process.
They're subject to waivers.
And so that makes the roster gymnastics here at the end of the season a little more tricky here.
So they're going to have to do that here for Josh Reynolds.
I would anticipate that maybe the Broncos will release Calvin Throckmorton and then Reynolds will be brought back in that place.
Luckily, Denver, they maintained health, right?
You know, other ways you can move guys up as if a player's hurt and they go on IR.
Denver's in a good position health-wise, knock on what, thankfully that's the case here.
So let's imagine.
Okay, Josh Reynolds returns this week.
So how does this impact the Broncos wide receiver rotation as Bo Nix has really started to develop chemistry not only with Cortland Sutton,
but we talked about in yesterday's show the emergence of Devon Valey as the team's number two wide receiver, which really that was Josh Reynolds' role before he was injured.
I think when you take a look at the snap counts on Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons, it kind of paints a little bit of a clearer picture here, right?
Obviously, you look at the wide receiver rotation as it is right now, Cortland Sutton, Devon Valey, little Jordan Humphrey, Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims.
Those are your active roster wide receivers that are getting reps right now.
In terms of snap count percentages, Cortland Sutton led the Broncos wide receiver group with 52 snaps and Sunday's win against the Atlanta Falcons.
The next closest guy, he came in at 42 snaps offensively, was Devon Valey.
He had 42.
And then after that, it is Lil Jordan Humphrey and Troy Franklin.
Both receivers in that regard right there, both of them had 27 total snaps in Sunday's win against obviously the Atlanta Falcons.
and Marvin Mims had 14.
He's kind of playing that hybrid receiver,
running back Joker role right now for Sean Payton.
So he's not as heavily featured as these guys,
but he's in the rotation here.
So if you look at it from a long-term roster perspective, right,
you want to obviously be good now,
but you also want to build for the future if you were Sean Payton.
What is the process here?
I think when Josh Reynolds returns,
you don't take away Devon Vele from his increased role that he certainly had
because he's come up big for Bowenix.
And obviously, Beau,
develop that chemistry with him. Cortland Sutton's obviously wide receiver number one.
So when you look at it, it's really going to have to boil down to little Jordan Humphrey,
Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims. With the new rule that Marvin is playing, I don't think the return
of Reynolds is going to impact him too much, right? So we'll keep him as kind of an asterisk here.
But you look at little Jordan Humphrey and you look at Troy Franklin, both players had equal
snaps at 27 on Sunday. Obviously both players had a touchdown.
You know, both players have different skill sets and they offer different traits that are valuable
here to Sean Payton his offense. But what is it that Josh Reynolds brings to the table here?
And I think that the question here, and maybe the answer within that is Reynolds' veteran
presence is something I think is valuable. Now, I mean, he was an impact player. He caught a
touchdown for Bo. Unfortunately, on that touchdown catch that he had against the Raiders in
week five was that play he injured his hand on that put him on injured reserve. So do you move
him into that wide receiver three role in terms of that? Like, if you're going to continue this
trend of having Cortland Sutton have the most snares,
on your offense.
You got to, you can't, I don't think you mess with Devon
Veilie, but can you maybe instead of
taking away like a lion's share from
Valey, can you maybe take some
reps or rotations away from
maybe a little Jordan Humphrey or Troy Franklin?
I personally don't think that Troy Franklin right now
should have his reps messed with
in any way, shape, or form.
His speed presence is something that defenses
are scared. If you go back and you watch the all 22,
you know, Troy obviously caught his first touchdown
this week, you know, not this first, his second
touchdown season, but caught one of the touchdowns from
Bo Nix this week against the Falcons.
But the thing is, the way that you're seeing the defense is played Troy, and specifically
even Kansas City did this, they're worried about his long speed.
And certainly the Baltimore Ravens, too, like Bo missed that one shot on fourth down.
His speed is a legitimate threat.
But now he's getting involved in the short and intermediate passing game a little bit
more.
He's a guy that has traits that you obviously saw something.
And if you're Sean Peyton and George Payton that forced you to move up to be able to draft
him.
To me, it's like, all right, hey, I think the odd man out in the situation, not terms of not
getting any reps entirely, but maybe getting a limited reduction in reps just so you can get
more reps here to Josh Reynolds, I think would be little Jordan Humphrey. Now look, well,
little Jordan Humphrey has made some plays here for the Broncos. He's also had some plays
where, you know, he's had a turnover or he's had some costly plays there. You know, luckily
this past week against the Falcons, he had a catch, was able to get two feet in terms of it
being a completed catch, but, you know, he fumbled. Luckily, he was able to recover it.
one thing I was watching after that play, even though Denver challenged it,
Sean Payton was ripping a little Jordan in that situation about what he should have done
or something along those lines.
I'm not a lip read or anything, but I was watching that interaction there as the replay was going on there.
If anything, I think Reynolds return impacts little Jordan Humphrey more so than it does any of the other wide receivers here for the Broncos.
I think that kind of opens up and answers that question here, Broncos Country.
Make sure you chime in with your thoughts on the Broncos wide receiver rotation.
you can get involved on social media at Cody Work NFL at Lockdown Broncos.
But I think it will be a nice addition to have Josh Reynolds return back into the mix here.
You look at Devon Valle, you look at Reynolds.
I mean, they're very similar in terms of obviously stature.
I think Devon Vela has got a little bit more muscle mass than Josh Reynolds.
But Josh Reynolds has that, I think, elite level athleticism.
And obviously, I think it could be a chain mover for you on third down.
Same thing with Vela, you know, especially if teams are going to focus on Cortland Sutton.
You know, you need to have two other guys step up.
And I think Reynolds and Velae can be those consistent guys that you're going to see on slant patterns,
outroutes, whatever may be quick hitches.
I think you can go to them.
But then all of a sudden, if these guys are starting to hurt defenses,
now it may afford the opportunity where defense say,
hey, you know, we're going to have to take our chances playing one-on-one coverage against Cortland Sutton.
And that's when Denver can maximize taking some of those shot plays to him and trying to open some things up for him.
I mean, the way that they're moving these guys around outside, inside is the number three receiver.
They're versatile in the way that they're doing it.
And on the Broncos offense, suddenly they're clicking a little bit.
It's fun to see.
And I think Reynolds' return will be a little bit of icing on the cake here feature for the Broncos if they can continue to maintain their streak offensively.
One thing, too, we're also going to analyze here with the Broncos offense.
What is going on with the running back position?
Is there an ongoing competition?
Well, the snap numbers seem to indicate it's by committee approach, but there's one player who's leading the way here for the Broncos.
We'll break that down much more here on today's episode of the show.

The Bronco's running back position right now has a ongoing competition between three different players and a little bit of a sprinkle.
of a hybrid player in the Joker role.
But who is the clear cut running back one?
That seems to be the mystery here for the Broncos this season.
Will that question get answered?
We'll break it down here on today's episode,
lockdown Broncos real quick.
I want to say thanks once again,
Broncos country of tuning in,

This is the place to be when you want the best objective
Broncos news content coverage and more.
What's going out with the Broncos running back competition here, folks?
This is a question that Broncos country had sent in on our mailbag over there
at Mile High Sports.
I felt like it would be a good talking point here today is the Denver Broncos are building up
for their matchup on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.
You know, in the Kansas City Chiefs game,
I think we all had the general vibe here that, hey, look at Adric Estimate.
He's breaking off chunk run after chunk run.
He's a hard guy to bring down, okay, maybe he's going to open up the game against the Atlanta Falcons as the primary ball carry.
And we even talked to offensive coordinator, Joe Lombardi throughout the week.
And he said, hey, we're going to ride it with the hot hand.
It's interesting because it's like, okay, the hot hand is perceivably different from what we're seeing on the field versus what we saw in terms of a week-to-week basis.
And what I mean by that is Javante Williams got the first touch in Sunday's game against the Falcons,
which was interesting because against Kansas City with Julo McLaughlin,
we got the first touch.
To be honest with you, there is no clear cut running back one here for Denver.
The snap totals are going to be a little misleading.
We'll highlight that here in a minute.
But it just seems like Denver is taking it on a game-by-game basis where it's like,
hey, we're going to start the game with this player.
We're going to see how they're doing in terms of running the football.
Do we have momentum?
How is the offense opening up here?
And then I think they're just sticking with what's flowing in that game.
And certainly I think that was the case this past week for Javis.
Javante Williams inside of the Broncos offense.
I mean, when you look at the snap totals here,
Broncos coach, I got to pull it up right here.
32 total snaps on offense for Javante Williams in this game.
Nine carries for 59 yards.
He was effective in that regard.
You talk about getting involved in the past game.
He was obviously involved in that aspect as well.
Nine total snaps for Jalil McLaughlin.
They change of pace speed back there.
Nine snaps total here for him in this game.
Very interesting.
And then you factor in Odrick Estime, 14 carries.
He had more, not 14 carries.
He had 14 snaps.
14 total snaps over Jilulam McLaughlin's 9,
but a clear cut separation between Adrick,
Jalil, and Javante, who led the way with 32 total snaps in that situation.
So, you know, is this a true by committee approach?
I feel like if it was a true by committee approach,
there would be a little bit more balanced with the total number of snaps and carries.
I know that, you know, in certain situations, you know,
it's dependent on how is this player in pass protection, right?
If it's a passing situation,
is this player going to be involved in a route out of the backfield?
Certainly the case.
Obviously, Audrake Estime got a little bit more run late in the second half.
There obviously with Denver having a big lead, which is maybe why Jolilil
McLaughlin's overall snaps weren't as high.
Maybe they want to see a little bit more out of estimate in terms of that.
But I think the one thing we have to look at here is Denver's running game doesn't have a true identity just yet.
And I think that's really the biggest question that we have with this team going forward,
especially as the offense has continued to involve and get better, like for
Denver, you haven't necessarily had a 100-yard rusher, so to speak, here from the running-back
position, but you've had guys break off some chunk yards.
And I think collectively as a team, because of Bo Nix's athleticism, you're getting 100-yards
rushing production amongst a handful of different players versus it just being one player.
So in that regard, when you look at it that way, it looks like a running back by committee
approach.
But Denver doesn't have their truly established number one guy yet.
But if you look at this game against Atlanta, it was.
Javante Williams. Now, that could be entirely different this week against the Las Vegas Raiders.
And I think that is the mystery here is, and maybe we'll find out from Sean Peyton this week.
We'll ask him here because one thing he did mention, he says it's very difficult.
It's hard to get a clear grasp on the rotation in terms of touches and reps at running back because
so much of his contingent upon situational football, right?
Down in distance side of the field, like those little factors play a big volume here in terms of what
Sean Payton decides to do.
and I don't think that it's an indictment on any of these players that are maybe getting a reduction in snaps like Jalil to have nine total snaps.
Offense just seems a little weird.
And for Estimate, you know, 14 is nice, but you want to see a little bit more of estimate versus it being like, hey, what if you had 15 for Javante, 15 total snaps for, you know, a guy like estimate?
And let's say, hey, you had 15 for Jalil.
I mean, in a perfect world, that would be the case.
But it's not because of the situations that you get put in, right?
If you're in a third and nine situation, you know the defense is going to rush, you're probably not going to
going to have Jalil McLaughlin in on the field there in that situation.
You're probably going to have a guy like Audrake Estimate who's bigger and Javate
Williams, who's good in past protection.
Those might be the options there, unless you're trying to get the screen game going
there with the running backs.
We saw the wide receiver screen game going a little bit.
That's certainly factored into it.
But now you add in maybe the wrinkle of Marvin Mims lining up in the backfield,
right, 14 total snaps of offense for him.
Certainly Denver made the most of those opportunities.
And it's like, all right, where is this going here?
I think this is the biggest mystery right now surrounding the Broncos offense as the second half part of the schedule continues to approach.
And look, this is crucial time.
This is clutch time.
This is where you have to put your best performances forward.
And I think if the run game can get going here, you're going to see things open up a little bit more for bone neck.
Certainly, I think that was the case here in Sunday's game against the Falcons.
The run game, Javante was breaking off some chunk yards.
Heck, he had a 14-yard touchdown run where the offense picked them up and carried them into the end zone.
And now all of a sudden that Falcon's defense saying, hey, not only do we have to play the run now because they're getting us,
but now it's like, hey, you're playing on your heels a little bit because now Bo Nix is carving you up in terms of an efficient passing output there.
So there's no clear-cut answer Broncos country to.
I think this is the mystery we're going to continue to try to monitor here for the Broncos going forward.
Keep in mind here, Javante, 32 offensive snaps, Adrick Estimate 14, 14 and Jaliel McLaughlin, 9 snaps.
Marvin Mims, 14 in that hybrid running back, wide receiver role here.
Does that change here against the Las Vegas Traders?
That's what we're going to be watching for here on Sunday.
But Broncos Country also wanted to know in terms of looking at this team,
looking at the state of how the roster is currently constructed,
with Denver's offense playing more efficient football as of late,
and the defense playing and getting back to their roots,
which position group needs to improve the most?
I think this is a valid question sent in from Broncos country.
We're going to answer that much more here on today's episode,
locked on Broncos.

As we jump on the fourth quarter action on today's episode,
Lockdown Broncos will highlight what position groups on offense and defense need to
improve the most here as the second half part of the schedule comes to fruition.
Every game, the stakes get a little bit higher and teams behind the Broncos starting to creep up
a little bit.
Denver has to maintain their brand of football, I think, in order to stay in that wild card
positioning here, obviously en route to what could be a successful season here for
the Broncos and Sean Payton's second year.
here as the head coach with a rookie quarterback and Bo Nix as the signal caller here.
I think when you look at this, it's interesting to maybe analyze here because you look at
the offense right now, Bo Nix has certainly continued to climb, right?
He's improved.
He's progressing.
And we haven't really seen any regression from Bo.
That's a great sign there.
You look at the running back position.
You're getting different contributions from all the guys we talked about in the previous segment.
You don't know why you want to see anything more consistency from the run game in general.
that position group, I don't think, is a problem for the Broncos right now.
It's not a, you know, they're not struggling in that department.
They're getting good contributions from various people.
Look at a wide receiver.
You know, Cortland Sun's obviously been the top guy here for Bo Nix the last handful of weeks.
That's kind of balanced itself out.
Devon Valey has emerged as the number two wide receiver.
We talked about a little bit earlier in the show that how does the return of Josh Reynolds impact that rotation?
You know, Reynolds is going to come back into the mix there.
And then you got young guys in Troy Franklin who possessed a little bit of a threat to defenses because of his speed.
and it's opening things up for other guys because of how defenses are playing
when Troy is doing certain things and he's lined up in certain spots offensively for the Broncos.
The offensive line, I feel like he's playing really good right now.
And you look in terms of their past protection,
Bonix had nothing but time in a clean pocket on a consistent basis in Sunday's game against the Falcons.
So where is the offensive side of the ball that probably needs to improve the most in the second half stretch?
it's even tough for me to say tight end here because as of late you know you had the national
tight-in breakout day by adam trowman but you're getting Nate adkins involved out of the back
field in that hybrid full-back tight-in role you know you've got Lucas crow who's continuing to
I think take steps forward and Adam Troutman has been so steady and consistent like if I had to
pick one position to improve by nature it would be maybe tight-in because hey like you want that
position to become a little bit more of a security blanket for bonnix and certainly it's building
that way, right? The signs and the trends are heading in that direction, but it's like you need to
have that be the reality here. And I think you need a big game coming up here in these final six
games. I think you need to see something big from Lucas Crowe in terms of explosive plays downfield.
That's one thing I think we have to keep our eye on here. But that's just me nitpicking
right now. Like, Broncos country, I don't know what position on the offense clearly needs to improve
here in the second half, considering how the O line is playing, considering how Bow is playing,
the running back contributions you're getting. The wide receiver rotation, I think,
is very solid right now.
So for me, it's got to open it up to you.
What are your thoughts?
What position needs to improve the most on offense?
But I think when you get to the defensive side of the ball,
it's also an equal question.
Like, I don't know where to go with this, right?
Because, you know, your secondary is playing well with Riley Moss,
Jaquan McMillan, P.
Pat Sertan.
You know, you got a different rotation right there because of injuries as of late.
You know, you had to have Devin Keefeeling for PJ Locke, you know, for a couple of weeks there.
Brandon Jones is playing really good football.
Now you had Devin Keffield in this past week for,
For obviously Brandon Jones, who's dealing with the abdomen injury,
I anticipate he'll be back into the mix this week.
The safety position, I think, has been fine for the Broncos.
Now, let's go to the defensive line in the trenches.
I mean, to be honest with you, the trenches are a big reason why the Broncos are having
sustained success at the second level, a linebacker, and also on the back end,
in terms of the secondary, because Zach Allen, DJ Jones, John Franklin,
Myers, Jordan, Jackson, and a rotational roll, Malcolm Roach rotating in.
These guys are causing havoc.
Like there's, when one guy comes off the field and the other guy's filling in, there is not a drop off from John Franklin Myers to Jordan Jackson or, you know, Malcolm Roach to DJ Jones.
That line is playing stout football right now and hats off to Jamar Kane for whatever changes he has made because it is allowing the Broncos defense to pressure quarterbacks at an insane rate to get after them to create more opportunities on the outside for Nick Benito, Jonathan Cooper, Jonah Ellis, Dundre Tillman.
the way that they're attacking offensive lines is fun to watch here.
So to me, it's not the defensive line.
It's not your outside linebackers.
Nick Benito is one sack away from double digits,
which are making the first Broncos since 2018 to do just that.
So is it the inside linebacker position?
Well, you got Cody Barton playing really good football right now.
And look, Justin Sternard is well.
And the thing I'm trying to figure out here is like,
I don't think that there's a general weakness right now on the Broncos defense
in terms of something like, hey, a team is going to watch film this week, and they're going to look to target and exploit that.
The Broncos don't have that clear identifier.
I think that opposing offense can do, but there's maybe some areas they're going to try to attack.
I think a lot of it is can they try to bite the Broncos when they're ultra aggressive?
To me, I don't think the defense in any way, shape, or form has any positions that need to improve down the stretch here.
I think the hope is that they can continue to maintain their high level of play, especially right here because this is the crucial juncture, right?
The Broncos last year, 2023, had to climb their way back from a one and five record.
Here they are right now sitting at six and five.
So they climbed back from a one and five record.
At that point last year, they were five and five.
And then they burnt out.
This is the biggest key that I have here for this Broncos team.
Here they are sitting at six and five.
Two games before your biweek.
The buy week will be nice.
And if you can maintain knock on wood, staying healthy here,
you come out of the by week against the Indianapolis Colts.
You play the charges right now.
We're playing really good football.
That's a tough team down there in L.A.
Then you got the Cincinnati Bengals who are dangerous,
even though their backs are against the wall right now,
and they're facing elimination.
And then you end it with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Denver is in a position right now to where they have to get through that breakthrough,
that barrier, right?
Because last year they hit a wall because they were too tired.
The energy and the calories, as Champagne said,
the calories burnt, trying to get out of that deficit,
definitely took a toll on them at the end of the season.
here you are at six and five firmly in control of your destiny once again.
Don Peyton has made the analogy that this team,
the leadership on this team is entirely different than it was last year.
This is, I think, what you want to seek.
Is this where the Broncos as a whole can improve in comparison to last season?
That is the biggest key here for me, Broncos country.
And with that said, that'll wrap up today's episode of the show here,
