Starting point is 00:00:00 When it comes to Bo Nix, Broncos Country just got the best news as he is fully cleared and ready to go for the team's offseason program. You are Locked on Broncos, your daily Denver Broncos podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. What's up, Brockos country? I'm Cody working on today's bonus episode of Locked on Brockos. We're going through the good news here for Bo Nicks. We'll talk about the warm and fuzzy dynamic that Bo Nix will now have a Logan Kilgore after Davis Webb's promotion. And what that means, according to what Sean Payton said. Plus, we'll go through Peyton's expectations for Bo as he goes into his third years. He highlights areas of growth that he wants to see from the young quarterback.
Starting point is 00:00:46 And on top of that, we're going to kick things off by talking about the good news. Bo Nix has been cleared for the Broncos off season program. We're going to get all that here on today's show here. Let's dive into it. Obviously, this week we heard from both George Payton and from Sean Payton at the NFL annual meeting where George talked about Bo as being this quasi-GM who is very excited about. the Jalen Waddle trade, how he's been in the team facility every day attacking his rehab. And obviously now he's set to be cleared for the team's offseason program.
Starting point is 00:01:14 We know begins in the first week of May. Bo has already began his training process here for Denver. This is usually the time he normally starts. And when we jumped on the conference call with him after the AFC championship game, Bo disputed the public timeline that was put out about where he would be at in terms of his recovery. And that was initially proclaimed by Adam Schaefter and company, as a 12 to 13 week recovery process that outlined time for him in a boot. But he's been walking around.
Starting point is 00:01:42 He's been without the boot for a while and he has resumed his training process for this upcoming season. And now what that means for him coming into the month of May when the team begins their offseason program, Bo is going to transition into obviously his own weight program with the team there. He's been in the building almost every single day, training, getting stronger himself, but also going through a maintenance stage of his recovery. and his rehab, especially trying to strengthen his ankle. Anytime you have surgery on a ligament, on a bone, you have to go through a process of restrengthening muscles and tissue and joints
Starting point is 00:02:14 and just trying to get the mobility back, especially when you get cut into, there's things like scar tissue. So for bowl, that's very important. And I know that the team has been very pleased with how things have gone behind the scenes with his recovery from the ankle surgery. There is no lingering concern when it comes to that. But Denver is going to spend the first month of May, really just strength training, conditioning.
Starting point is 00:02:36 They're not going to be stepping foot on the football field and doing football-related activities. That doesn't say that Bo and his teammates aren't going to get together here over the course of the next month or so and throw on their own. That is something that they have done. That's something that Bo believes in doing as well. It is exciting here to hear that as Bo is going to year three,
Starting point is 00:02:54 there were a lot of concerns initially after the injury happened. I saw a lot of headlines. I saw a lot of speculation. People were saying, well, what if Boe doesn't recover from these folks? Bo is a great athlete. He's a pro athlete. care of his body. He does all the right things. He's a durable athlete. He's tough as nails. And for this, yeah, it was a hiccup. It was an obstacle in terms of where the Broncos were at last
Starting point is 00:03:14 season because Bo put them on such an impressive trajectory that when the injury came, especially at the timing of it, it just kind of sucked the wind out of the sales of Broncos country. And nobody was more gutted than Bo. And I just remember going back after that Bill's game, walking by as we were going in locker room, seeing Bo on the x-ray table, usually guys sit in there, they get IVs and didn't think anything of it, saw Bo get up off the table and walk. So I didn't think anything of it. And then when we sat down, it's like, wait a minute,
Starting point is 00:03:41 this got to be a fake tweet. That's how we felt initially at the time. So, I mean, even though the Bo broke his ankle, I mean, he was walking on it and just sucked the window out of the sales of Broncos country. And we'll always sit here and wonder, like, what if, what if Bo didn't get hurt in that Bill's game? What would have happened in the AFC championship game?
Starting point is 00:03:57 What would have happened if the Broncos made it to the Super? Will they've had a chance to beat the Seattle Seahawks? would have been a tough matchup, but you never know. Denver could have gotten it done. But the expectations here for Bo going forward are certainly to continue to climb and improve here as the team has made additions around him. Obviously, adding J. Lin Waddle into the mix, bringing back guys like J.K. Dobbins, banking on the continued development of guys like R.J. Harvey, having a receiver room that the Broncos believe in from a developmental standpoint. There's some really good talented players in there, despite the fact that Denver suffered too many drops
Starting point is 00:04:28 last season. And for Bo, it's how can I continue to get better? or well, Brockco's country coming up next. We're going to hear from head coach Sean Payton. As he outlines some of the things that he expects from Boe going into year three. And he even talks about how now you can start to grade that year's draft class led by Boe Nix. You're going to hear from him here on today's episode of the show. Brockos Country, today's episode, the show is brought to you by friends over there at Robin Hood. Sean Payton has outlined what he believes Bo Nix can do here in year three to continue to grow as he has led the Broncos in so many different categories since his rookie season to last year. 24 wins for Bo in his first two seasons. Ties Russell Wilson for the most wins by quarterback in their first two years in NFL history. And Bo has shown he has the pedigree to continue to improve. And he has been the tide that raises all the ship.
Starting point is 00:06:03 in the harbor here. And now going into year three, the Broncos have made some moves here in terms of adding Jaylon Wattel a wide receiver, banking on the fact that the offensive scheme should evolve a little bit now with Davis Webb, a little bit more modernized perspective on how the plays are called here that could help the Broncos offense explode here this upcoming season. We heard from Sean Payton at the NFL annual owners meeting where he was at the AFC coaches breakfast, and he was asked about what does year three of growth look like for Bo NICs? He answered that, Plus shared some insight as to mount that 2024 draft class, how it can now start to be graded out. I think, look, his job, and we say this all the time, is get your lead your team into the end zone, lead your team to wins.
Starting point is 00:06:47 And so I think, man, we see him every day at the facility. You know, he's doing, he's had a schedule with his rehab. He likes being around football. And, you know, that draft and the significance of getting, trying to get that right is like, holy cow, it's so important. And look, we'll be able to grade that whole class, you know, I always say three years out. Well, we can begin to apply that. And then certainly 10 years out, you really know. but yeah I think I think the tweaks the changes the additions and then understanding the challenges ahead
Starting point is 00:07:32 and those challenges are the fact that the Broncos they have a tougher schedule coming up here in 2026 you want to make sure your pieces on the offensive side are meshing certainly there are some concerns about the Broncos run game and something that Sean Payton himself highlighted as a scheme thing that they really want to fix they want to be more consistent in the run game something they haven't been in the two seasons prior to where Sean was at last year. And that's going to be very important to take the pressure off of Bow Nix this upcoming season, is having that run game. And obviously, if J.K. Dobbin stays healthy. I went through and did a film review for all the everydayers out there. And I tell you what, the one thing that excites me is that if Dobbin stays healthy,
Starting point is 00:08:09 he has this explosive playability. He had 21 plus runs last year of 10 plus yards, explosive plays. And there were times where he was making something out of nothing. But he meshes really well with how the Broncos offense wants to run the football, but it's just about maybe tweaking the scheme here and looking at what can our personnel do? I think that's a question that goes into it for Sean, but more importantly, it's, hey, if we have to get this run game going,
Starting point is 00:08:33 because Bo Nix threw for the most passing attempts last season in the NFL, having that run game balance, and let's say the run game works, well, all of a sudden now, Bo doesn't have to suddenly Superman everything that we saw him do last year that obviously led to the fourth quarter comebacks, the game winning drives that he orchestrated. That's great for the,
Starting point is 00:08:50 the legend of Bo Nix, but for the Broncos, you don't want to be in those cardiac kid situations all over again. And the Broncos, they know they're going to face tougher opponents. They're going to face a lot of teams that were playing in the postseason, including the defending Super Bowl champions, the team that they lost to in the AFC championship game, the New England Patriots, Denver's schedule is going to be tougher this upcoming season. And to be more than just that one dimensional offense is going to be paramount for Bo to continue to grow. But also one thing that Peyton talked about, as well as the Broncos have made some changes to the coaching staff. we know Davis Webb promoted offensive coordinator.
Starting point is 00:09:23 He's going to be calling the plays this upcoming season. Sean's going to have a hand in the install and obviously over the offense. But it is going to be Davis being the trigger man here for the Broncos in the play calling department. What is going to change, though, that Sean Payton gave this indication of is that now that Logan Kilgore, who has been promoted to quarterback coach, he's going to be the warm and fuzzy to Bo Nix. Now, some people might be wondering, what does that mean? I have been on the record of saying just being around the Broncos and being around Sean at practice. Sean is very much the bad cop. And Sean himself, he went to the lengths of saying,
Starting point is 00:09:55 I have nothing warm and fuzzy with me except in my golf bag. And that is the towel that I use. So from a side of that is like, Sean wants to be the guy that's going to coach the players hard. He's going to be bad cop in a lot of situations. He wants his assistant coaches to come in and play good cop. So now that Davis Webb is going to have more power, more play calling responsibility on his plate. Davis is going to transition to a little bit of being bad cop now. He were Last year, he was the warm and fuzzy for Bo Nix. When Sean was hard on Boer or would challenge him, Davis was the guy that was kind of the mediator between the two
Starting point is 00:10:28 or would be like, hey, he's doing this because he wants this out of you. Now, Davis, because of his position is going to have to be tougher on Bo. He's going to have to be tougher on the players on the offensive side of the ball. He's going to have a lot of saying that. He's going to have some oversight on the wide receivers, the running backs, in terms of giving them coaching, especially as the play caller for Bo. his fallback guy is now going to be Logan Kilgore. Obviously, we know he coached Arch Manning.
Starting point is 00:10:53 When he was in high school there, Sean talked about how he's had him in New Orleans at training camp and that he knows what type of coach that he's got here with Kilgore, who could be on a very nice ascension path as his coaching career continues to accelerate at the NFL level where he was brought in just a couple of years ago by Sean. But the warm and fuzzy is, hey, we just need a good cop here to counteract the bad cop.
Starting point is 00:11:15 So I wonder was Sean now handing, obviously play calling off to Davis, is there this element that's going to be present where Sean and Davis are both bad cop and Logan Kilgore is the good cop? Or are we going to see Sean maybe be kind of that mediator between Davis and Logan? I don't know how that's going to work. I'm very curious to see what that process is going to look like. But maybe a more hands-off approach coming up here from Sean in terms of when it comes to coaching Bo Nix, letting Davis and letting Logan coach. him up a little bit. Obviously, Sean is going to say, hey, there's the reason why we're doing this. You know, on this play call, this is the vision behind what I need you to do. And he's going to obviously marry these are our route concepts with this. The relationship for Sean and
Starting point is 00:11:59 Bo isn't going to change. They're still going to push each other and challenge each other. But I do wonder now if Davis is expected to be a little bit harder on Bo where Sean comes into that category. And obviously, we know the buffer between that's going to be Logan Kilgore here going forward. So a lot of interesting things here. coming up here for your Broncos team here as the team is now shifting their focus to the NFL draft draft meetings have began for them. But they are not going to be picking in the first round as of right now. 60 second overall is going to be the day two slot in which they pick.
Starting point is 00:12:30 There's always a chance that they can trade up here. But the Broncos right now, they like the roster that they have built. And this year's NFL draft is about adding pieces that they feel like can help this team going forward. And it's going to challenge some positions. What positions? We don't exactly know just yet. But we are excited that.
Starting point is 00:12:45 Bow Nix is going to be fully healthy and ready to go for the team's offseason program beginning in the first week of May.
