Starting point is 00:00:03 You are Locked-on Broncos Postcast, powered by Mile High Sports, part of Locked-on Sports, Denver, on the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. That is one way to lose a football game. Man, what a brutal loss for the Denver Broncos this afternoon against the Kansas City Chiefs, your final score, 16 to 14. They were right there. they were right there. The Broncos were in striking range to win the game.
Starting point is 00:00:42 They kind of had an opportunity there to punch it in for seven or play a little bit more conservative. Let the clock tick down and kick it what should have been a game-winning field goal. And unfortunately, none of that goes according to plan for Sean Peyton and the Deverebron Broncos. But welcome on in to your locked-on Broncos postcast. I am your host, at El Opeiro.
Starting point is 00:01:01 Hope everybody is doing well out there, although I know Broncos countries probably feel them some type away on this Sunday. But guys, do me a favor like this video on YouTube and make sure to subscribe to your Lockdown Sports Denver YouTube channel. That will you guys never miss an episode of your Locked on Broncos postcast. And today's episode of your Lockedon Broncos postcast is brought to you by our friends over at Price Picks. Go to prizepicks.com slash locked on NFL and use code all lowercase locked on NFL to win $50 instantly when you play $5.
Starting point is 00:01:34 But the story of the game It's unfortunate because look, you want to see some more out of the Denver Broncos offense And I'll spend majority of the second half of the program Talking about that But I think we've got to start with what's front and center And that is the blocked field goal attempt On the final play of the game
Starting point is 00:01:52 And I was actually watching this game I had my headset on watching on stream And my buddy who was about I don't know, maybe 15 seconds ahead of me, whatever it might be I just hear, oh no, we've been kind of going back and forth and chatting throughout the course of the game, giving our opinions. And I'm like, don't tell me what happened.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Just don't tell me what happened. And lo and behold, 10, 15 seconds later, I see the blocked field goal. And what should have been a victory show has now turned into a loss show as the Broncos are just unable to get the job done today. And look, man, what's the old saying? You know, you come at the king, you best not miss, you know, I think is how it goes. And that is exactly what happens. And, you know, breakdowns are going to happen on special teams.
Starting point is 00:02:39 Breakdowns are going to happen on offense. They're going to happen on defense. We saw one play with Mahomes there. I think it was in the first half to Xavier Worthy. I forget the exact receiver. But we saw a broken play where Mahomes kind of rolls out, scrambles, finds a wide open receiver that, you know, extended a drive for the chiefs at that point when they were on third and long in that position.
Starting point is 00:02:56 And just a bad time to have a misfire if you're the Denver Bronco special teams unit. And Denver did, you know, everything that they were. supposed to do, right? Kansas City kicks a field goal late with about, with just over, let's see here. Well, the Broncos got the ball back with five minutes left to play. But so Kansas City's up 16 to 14 after a late field goal there in the fourth quarter. And the Broncos do a good job of what's the one way that you beat Patrick Mahomes. Do not give him the ball back with anything more than three seconds on it, right? You don't want to have Mahomes have enough time to try to make a play, call time out, you know, get the field goal unit on, whatever it might be. And that is exactly.
Starting point is 00:03:34 what the Broncos were following the script of is we're going to get this ball last. We're going to live and die by our own sword. And Denver did a good job of milking the clock there because Denver got the ball back with 557 left to play there in the fourth quarter. Excuse me. And a 13-play drive, milked the clock, milk the clock, milk the clock to try to set yourself up with that game-winning field goal. And no dice, you know, and they were talking about it on the broadcast, how Will Lutz
Starting point is 00:04:03 has been a top five kicker by most metrics this season. I believe he leads the NFL and fields goals made. And that is just a brutal, brutal, brutal way for the Denver Broncos to go out after doing everything right in that final drive. And look, they did get shut out in the second half. That'll be a major talking point throughout the course of this program because the offense, frankly, was just not good enough. But the reality of the situation is Denver had the ball late with an opportunity to put the chiefs to bed. and they were unable to do so. And you want to say lucky, whatever it might be,
Starting point is 00:04:37 we know Mahomes gets a lot of calls. I mean, that's just a brutal, brutal way to lose. You know, the refs didn't really have anything to do with it on that final drive. Oh, I thought there were some questionable flags that were thrown, you know, naturally over the course of a Kansas City Chiefs game. But, I mean, they have just got to be the most God, like, like God just watches over the Kansas City Chiefs, you know, ever since they got Patrick Wilms.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Because they just figure out a way to win these games. and I was talking about it with my super producer Danny Bailey back at Mile High Sports. We were at our CU watch party yesterday at number 38. And we were talking about this game and he's like, you know, I've got a good feeling about this one. And I did too. You know, this was a situation where Denver caught Kansas City at the right time. Yes, they're undefeated. But, you know, Broncos coming off a loss, a blowout loss at that to the Baltimore Ravens last week.
Starting point is 00:05:24 Right. You got a little bit of a bad taste in your mouth. So you want to play with some extra edge. Kansas City. Patrick Mahomes is a little banged up. You know, they've looked a little bit shaky despite continuing to win these games. And this game played out exactly like I thought the Broncos wanted it to, giving themselves a chance with under, you know, four or five minutes left to play there when they got the ball back,
Starting point is 00:05:43 with an opportunity to put the nail in the coffin for Patrick Mahomes and this Kansas City Chiefs team to give them their first loss of the season. And again, you want to say it's luck, you want to say it's missing assignments, whatever it might be. The reality situation is that Denver Broncos were just not good enough to get the job done today. feel like, look, losing on a blocked field goal is an absolutely brutal way to go out. But when you score zero points, you know, you would have scored three points in the second half had that field goal been good. When you fail to score a touchdown or just any points in general in the third and fourth quarters, I mean, you're playing with fire against this Kansas City Chiefs team.
Starting point is 00:06:17 And look, let's give credit where credit is due. The Broncos defense did a good job limiting the Kansas City's only six points in the second half. This was a quick, quick game. You know, you know, Vance Joseph and company did a good job of making some adjustments. but when they needed to come through when it mattered most, they were just unable to do so. And it's frustrated because it's going to wipe away
Starting point is 00:06:37 what was otherwise a pretty good game, I would say, from the Denver Broncos, all things considered. I thought Bo Nix looked real good in this game today. He continues to look better and better and better as the season progresses. Adric Estimate had some big time runs, although it's not going to necessarily show up in the stat sheet. You know, he was doing some things in the back field.
Starting point is 00:06:55 You know, the wide receiver group was cooking. Quitlin Sutton had a nice game. You know, Devon Bailey had a couple of nice catches, including one for a touchdown. And again, you're still waiting for this Broncos offense to come together. But with the way that their defense has been playing and all things considered, Denver just loses in really poor fashion. And now this is nine consecutive trips to Arrowhead.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Nine years. I think I was in high school the last time that Denver Broncos, yeah, probably about nine years ago. You know, it's been that long since the Broncos have been able to go into Arrowhead and beat the Kansas City Chiefs. And, you know, they ended the, what was it, a 16 game win streak, I believe last year when the Broncos ended up knocking off Kansas City. But, you know, now the streak extends to nine and we'll have to wait until all the way in next season for the Broncos to try to get an opportunity to beat the Kansas City Chiefs on their home turf. Unable to do it today.
Starting point is 00:07:49 Frustrating. Let me know how you guys are feeling. Drop some comments. Push them up on the screen. We'll go back and forth. I always say that I'm the host of this show, but you, the live fans out there are the ones that help me drive the conversation. So if anybody's got some thoughts on the ending of the game, we're just the game in general.
Starting point is 00:08:02 Go ahead and let me know in the comments section. We can have some fun here and try to make light of this situation as the Denver Broncos just lose in absolutely gut-wrenching fashion today to the Kansas City Chief 16 to 14, your final score. And Patrick Mahomes wasn't even that great today. Bonnakes had a better rating than Patrick Mahomes. You know, Kareem Hunt was held in check. You know, for the most part, at least in the rushing backfield,
Starting point is 00:08:27 he could have 65 yards on seven receptions as a receiver. But, you know, Travis Kelsey, you know, not the same version of Travis Kelsey, right? DeAndre Hopkins didn't score today. You know, the Broncos were set up to win this game. And as I mentioned, their defense, you know, did a really good job. I felt like as this game went along, got a couple of sacks on Patrick Mahones. Actually, more than a couple four total sacks this afternoon for the Denver Broncos offense or defense, excuse me, on Patrick Mahomes with five tackles for loss. Bo Nicks was only sacked twice today.
Starting point is 00:08:55 and it's frustrating, you know, especially when it's against one of your rivals, a division opponent that is, you know, the defending back-to-back Super Bowl champions, right? A win today, I think, goes a long way and kind of building up the belief in this Denver Broncos team. And look, I think they can still make the playoffs. I think everything's still on the table for Denver by virtue of the AFC being pretty mid this season. But that's one that you wish you could have back, wish you could do it over as the Broncos lose this afternoon, 16 to 14, your final score against the Kansas City. Chiefs. And look at this.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Russell Wilson, I got him on my TV right now. It looks like he's trying to lead the Steelers to come from behind victory over to Washington commanders who've been one of the hottest teams in the NFL, the irony in that. But all right, let's hit a quick break. When we come back, we'll continue along with the conversation talking to the little Denver Broncos football as they fumble the bag this afternoon losing to the Kansas City Chiefs 16 to 14. Stick with me, folks. Drop some comments. Let me know how you guys are feeling out there.

I am your host, Anilo Piro. Hope everybody is hanging in there out there as the Denver Broncos lose in gut-wrenching fashion this afternoon to the Kansas City Chiefs, 16 to 14, your final score losing on just a brutal,
Starting point is 00:13:20 absolutely brutal. No other way to put it. Game ceiling field goal block for the Kansas City Chiefs. You don't see that too often, I feel like. You see field goal blocks and pump blocks, but for the win, right, where all you got to do, I mean, I don't know if you guys saw the pictures on the side, sideline, but you know, Sean Payton was ready to raise his hand.
Starting point is 00:13:38 The Bronco sideline was going crazy for like a half a second. And they realized that it was blocked and the game was over and that they lost. And man, that is just one heck of a way to go out if you're a Denver Bronco fan. And if you're a player, obviously, that's a bad feeling. You feel like, you know, you do so much, you put in so much effort to try to get to this spot and try to take down the Kansas City Chiefs. And for it to end like that, when you were controlling the game there in the last four minutes with the ball, milk in the clock, do.
Starting point is 00:14:06 and everything you were supposed to do and to still come up short, it's a bad feeling. It's a bad feeling. But it was not all bad today, I would say, for the Denver Broncos. I thought their offense,
Starting point is 00:14:15 while they only did score those 14 points, all of which came in the second quarter, you know, I thought Bo Nix was pretty good. And as much as Broncos fans want to make the playoffs this season, right, that is ultimately always going to be the goal, especially for a team in the Broncos
Starting point is 00:14:29 who have not made the playoffs since they won the Super Bowl all those years ago. I mean, you're going on almost 10 years of a playoff drought right now for the Denver Broncos. And I want to make sure that we still pay attention to the growth and the maturity that we're seeing from this Broncos team because, you know, if this was last year, it's probably not even close, right?
Starting point is 00:14:49 The Broncos probably aren't even in this game when it's all said and done. But you're seeing a team that has some identity that is being constructed on the offensive and the defense inside the ball. We know how good Vince Joseph has been. We know Patrick Stratan, Jonathan Cooper, we just got the big contract extension. Like, we know that they have plenty of talent on defense. And they did a good job today. limited Mahomes in the Chiefs offense, totally six points there in the second half.
Starting point is 00:15:11 I mean, you really can't complain about that whatsoever. But let's also not lose sight of Bo Nix's progression because I thought he was pretty good in this game. 22 for 30. So, you know, the accuracy was there for today for Bo Nix and a couple of drops, including one from Cortland Sutton, which would have said the Brock was over the first down, where Bo Nix hit him on the crossing route over the middle right in the breadbasket. And Cortland Sutton was unable to secure the catch. show, you know, a couple catches on the receivers today.
Starting point is 00:15:37 Only 250 passing yards for Bo, two touchdowns, and a pass rating of 1.15.3. It was only sacked today twice as well, which is, you know, hopefully a good sign of things to come as they try to keep Bo Nix upright. You know, Autraguestime was good in the first half, did some stuff as well in the second half. 14 carries for 53 yards. You know, so you like to see that, but you need some more production out of these running backs, man. I mean, Marvin Nibis was your second leading rusher today. He's a wide receiver at three carries for 17 yards. Gillil McLaughlin, two carries for 12,
Starting point is 00:16:07 and Javante only had one carry in this game for one yard. And Bo Nix, who is normally able to kind of scramble and do some stuff with his legs, unable to do so today. He did kind of rush three times, but for negative five yards. So Kansas City did a good job of keeping Bo contained. But he is the quarterback. He does have to sling the ball around the field. And I thought for the most part today,
Starting point is 00:16:25 you saw Bo Nix just continue to look the part, continue to take some steps on his progression. I think while it's still a little bit too early for me to declare one way or the other, like is Bo Nix the guy? I mean, I think we could all feel comfortable in saying, and I think we all realize that he's got a career in front of him, right? Like he doesn't look like a total bust out of the gate. Bo Nix has been doing some really good things with limited talent around him.
Starting point is 00:16:47 And so I think the future is still very, very bright for Bo Nix, despite the offense struggling today beyond the second quarter where they put up all their points. But Cortland Sutton was looking to make it three in a row, 100-yard receiving games. He was unable to do so. He had six receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown, though. So, you know, court had a pretty good game. Outside of that one big drop, I would say. But court had a pretty good game.
Starting point is 00:17:09 Devon Bailey, you know, when your second leading receivers putting up less than 40 yards, that's going to be a problem. Four receptions for 39 yards at a touchdown. That was the first touchdown for the Broncos in this game. And then Adam Troutman, the tight end, had one burst play, one reception for 34 yards. But then pretty much crickets across the board here for the rest of the Broncos wide receiving court. Little Jordan Humphrey, two for 23. Lucas Crowled, two for 21.
Starting point is 00:17:32 Marvin Mims, four for 13. right, like you kind of get the story here of the Denver Broncos offense and how they tend to struggle. But, you know, that's just kind of the norm, I would say here for the Broncos this season. You kind of just know what you're dealing with, with some lackluster talent at times, a lack of consistency from the wide receiving group. I guess they're consistently underwhelming. It's, I guess, one way that you could put it. But, you know, at least court had a decent game, but just not enough around Bo to, you know,
Starting point is 00:17:58 see this thing kind of all click for him just yet. But again, I can't, like, Bo had his shortcomings today. Don't get me wrong. no interceptions. I think that's definitely a big takeaway as well, is that they did a good job of limiting that dynamic from Bo. Not that the interceptions have been a massive problem for him. He did have the fumble,
Starting point is 00:18:13 but the Broncos did end up getting that ball back. But, you know, all this stuff adds up. And I don't know what it is with Sean Payton or what they're going to have to do. Like I saw my guy, Cody Rourke, who you guys are very familiar with on the standard lockdown Broncos podcast talking about it feels like one step forward, two steps back with the Broncos offense. Either not leaning into what's worked or just, finding things that work on a consistent basis because it was what punt punt touchdown touchdown
Starting point is 00:18:37 miss field goal at the end of the first half as well which you know is all the difference you know when you kind of look at it in hindsight right maybe the game plays out a little bit differently if they're able to convert that what was it a 61 yard field goal going into half so like i don't think you can completely hold that against the broncos and it will lutz it was you know going to be a long shot either way but the kicking department the special teams today ultimately coming up short for the Denver Broncos which is frustrating to say the least absolutely positively frustrating. So back to the drawing board now for Sean Payton and company. And we'll see what they can do here as they try to move forward with this football season.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Broncos at 5 and 5 on the year and even 3 and 3 home and Kansas City, of course, improves to 9 and 0 on the season. And of course, 5 and 0 at home and extended their victory streak over the Denver Broncos at home to 9 consecutive games. That's nine years of consecutive losses for the Denver Broncos on the road in Arrowhead. all right let's hit our final break when we come back we'll get ready to put a bow on the show no pun intended but do you guys have any thoughts or comments drop them for me we'll push them up on the screen we'll read them and we'll go back and forth here as we get ready to wrap up right here on your locked on broncos postcast stick with me folks this is a good one i did this one yesterday for the buff postcast let me tell you about our friends over at omaha stakes guys because nothing delivers comfort enjoy quite like the unrivaled quality and taste of omaha Stakes. Starting point is 00:23:30 I got a Nuggets show, I believe, coming up tonight. So if you want to talk about some Nuggets basketball, I'll be live on the channel a little bit later on this evening as well. But yeah, man, just kind of in conclusion, let's go over some stats here for the Broncos versus the Chiefs game. And, you know, Denver, you know, they did what they were supposed to do. You know, Kansas City had more first downs, 19 of Denver 16. But Denver did a good job at least keeping things, you know, in order nearly a little bit over 50% actually from third down.
Starting point is 00:23:53 7 for 13 were the Broncos today. You know, they're 260 yards of offense trailed Kansas City by only 40 yards. They finished up with 300. But, you know, all in all, I think what this game also comes down to is the time of possession. The Kansas City Chiefs just absolutely dominated. the Denver Broncos today in time of possession. 33 minutes and 21 seconds TOP for Kansas City compared to just 2639 for the Denver Broncos. And again, it was looking like that wasn't going to matter because Denver did an excellent job at the end of the game with about five
Starting point is 00:24:27 minutes and change left to play of running a pretty meticulous and calculated it ultimately being a 13-yard drive or 13-play drive, excuse me, that should have resulted in a game-winning field goal. But Kansas City breaks it up. They block it. Boom. That's a she wrote. So just a tough way for the Broncos to go out today. But again, you know, I hate to say it this way, but the one team you can't afford to do this against is the Kansas City Chiefs. And I understand that it wasn't Patrick Mahomes leading, you know, his offense down the field to score some game winning points. But when you're playing a team like the Chiefs, not even a team like the Chiefs, just the Chiefs, right? Because I think the 49ers are susceptible. I think the Lions can be beaten. Houston can be beaten. We've seen Cincinnati fall off. you know, Baltimore can be beaten despite the fact that Denver lost to them last week, right?
Starting point is 00:25:15 Like the one team that you can't even just give, like you need to beat them thoroughly. And I know that's hard to do because of what the Kansas City Chiefs are. But the reality, the situation is, even with the homes on the field, this team finds a way to win this game. And I know it's frustrating. Like that's probably the word of the day is frustration. So, you know, go out and take a walk. The sun is shining. The snow is melting here in Colorado.
Starting point is 00:25:38 But you just can't leave any doubt. whatsoever when you're playing the Kansas City Chiefs. And despite the fact that Denver had a good chance there at the end of the game, in control, doing exactly what they were trying to do, doesn't make up for the fact that this team in Kansas City just figures out ways to win games. And today it wasn't because of Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes was hobbled out there. Today it was because of their special teams unit.
Starting point is 00:26:03 And really a missed field goal going into half and that final blocked field goal at the end of the game. But, you know, outside of that man, you know, the defense played a good, game. They sacked Mahomes four times. You know, I thought you saw Zach Allen making a big impact in this game. He had one of the sacks. Brandon Jones running all over the place. Cody Barton running all over the place. Both of those guys with nine total tackles. PJ Locke doing his thing with seven tackles. Jonathan Cooper off of the contract extension records a sack. Nick Benito gets a sack. He was in, you know, most of these big plays all throughout the course of the afternoon. You know, so the defense, you know, when you give him 16 points to Patrick Mahomes in Arrowhead,
Starting point is 00:26:42 you're feeling pretty good about your chances. You really are. And so that's why it's such a frustrating outcome for Denver. And it's a frustrating show to do a little bit because I was sitting here planning on talking about good things. Broncos buck the streak, this and that,
Starting point is 00:26:55 boom, boom, boom. And just like that, it's gone. And that, my friends, is what happens when you have breakdowns of communication, you have breakdowns of assignments. And frankly, when you're going up against the most polished team, a team that should be a favorite to win the Super Bowl
Starting point is 00:27:09 for a reason in the Kansas. City Chiefs. So drop some comments, guys. Let me know how you guys are feeling. Also make sure to like this video, subscribe to your Lockdown Sports Denver YouTube channel. That would you guys never ever miss an episode of your Locked on Broncos postcast. But anyone have any big takeaways? Let me know as I'll be going to wind down here on the program. But again, I think for me, Bo Nix looked apart. He continues to get better. Again, 22 for 30, 215 passing yards and two scores for Bo for a quarterback rating of 115.3. Mahomes only had a quarterback rating of 92. he dropped back to pass today
Starting point is 00:27:41 42 times on that hobbled leg. 28 for 42 was Mahomes, 266 yards, only one touchdown, sagged four times. You know, Kreme Hunt, seven receptions for 65 yards, Kelsey, eight for 64 in a touchdown. But again,
Starting point is 00:27:56 and I know that the chief auntie kill prime Travis Kelsey explosive chiefs that we've all kind of come to know and understand over the last handful of years, you know, when they were initially winning Super Bowls, they've kind of adjusted over the last couple of years. But still, game that the Broncos were until the very end.
Starting point is 00:28:13 A game, like, I mean, that's just like, I hate to sound like a broken record, but like, they were right there, right there. And, you know, I think about what was it, Pat McAfee yesterday, you know, he had the guy, the kid tried to kick the field goal on college game day for a bunch of money. And the kid was kind of talking to him smack on kickers. And I know that this one necessarily wasn't on, um, on Will Lutz because the kicker was blocked. But it's such an overlooked part of the game. Nothing is absolutely given in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:28:40 And look, I don't think he's making that field go before half. There's a reason why Kansas City sent, what was it, McCle Hardman, I believe, back there to return it. It was a Hail Mary type of kick for the Broncos in their field goal unit. But, you know, we've seen some of these kickers make some of these absurd kicks throughout the course of the season. And I think Willets is fine, but it's just kind of one of those microcosms of the game today where it's like, man, like our special teams are the ones that let us down. You know, our offense also let us down, not able to score more than two touchdowns after the second quarter, any points at all, actually. And so that's the way the cookie kind of crumbles here today, folks. But the Broncos today losing 16 to 14 to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Starting point is 00:29:15 Up next, they'll come home after a couple of weeks on the road to take on the Atlanta Falcons. That is a 205 mountain time kickoff. And then the schedule kind of lightens up here a little bit. It really does. I mean, Atlanta, that's a winnable game. I would imagine that Denver might be a slight favorite. That's probably going to be a pickum if I had to guess. And then you have two games in a row after that that you should win at Oakland or at Vegas,
Starting point is 00:29:35 rather against the Raiders, and then home against the Browns. So you're looking for Denver to potentially go on a three-game win streak here over the next few weeks, or at least get back on track next week against the Atlanta Falcons before those games against the Raiders and Browns. And then we really get into the nitty-gritty. I mean, we're over the halfway point of this football season, folks. And the Broncos are an even five-and-five. They're exactly 500. So plenty of time for them to get right and try to fix some stuff as we move forward throughout the course of the season.
Starting point is 00:30:01 Playoffs still on the table. But today, a brutal loss, whichever way you slice it for the Denver Broncos.
