Locked On Broncos - Daily Podcast On The Denver Broncos - Locked On Broncos POSTCAST: Ravens crush Broncos in Week 9
Episode Date: November 3, 2024The Baltimore Ravens crushed the Denver Broncos in Week 9 of the NFL season, 41-10. The Broncos defense, which was one of the best units in the NFL entering the game, had no answers for Ravens running... back Derrick Henry. King Henry ran for over 100 yards and two scores while two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson added three touchdowns of his own. The Broncos offense was working in the second quarter, but here scoreless in the second half. Bo Nix had a crazy touchdown reception, but that was the lone bright spot for the Broncos today. Well, hello and howdy Broncos country. Welcome on into your locked on a Broncos postcast.
Not the Sunday that all of Broncos country envisioned out there.
I knew it was going to be a tough game against the Baltimore regardless, but 41 to 10.
that is the Baltimore Ravens, in my opinion, showcasing just why they are.
I don't want to say in a league of their own, but there's the Denver Broncos in a tier,
and then there's the Baltimore Ravens in a tier when it comes to playoff contenders and title hopefuls.
I would not put the Broncos in the title's hopeful spot.
I put them in the playoff hopeful spot.
And the Broncos still may very well end up making the playoffs by byproduct of the
AFC just kind of being in shambles, not to get into that right now.
But I think that there's a lot to take away from this game about how the Broncos
Broncos are a good team trending in the right direction,
but you saw when they punch up a weight class
just how difficult it is for them to generate any sort of success
against these higher level teams.
And they'll get a test next week as well.
But again, your final score today, 41 to 10.
I'm your host, Anilo Piro.

I am an active fan dual user.
I'll have some thoughts on Fanduel a little bit when I do their ad read.
But it was not a good day for me as well.
I didn't have the Broncos, but a couple other things did not go my way.
But that's the way the cookie crumbles.
But let's talk a little Denver Broncos football here today.
And it was the Lamar Jackson and Derek Henry show.
As those two players on top of Baltimore's defense, which is a pretty solid unit across
the NFL. They just wreaked havoc on the Denver Broncos all throughout the day.
I put it in the rundown for any of you that are watching on YouTube.
We're going to talk about that Bo Nix touchdown pass or reception, I guess, rather you
should say, because wow, that was one of the only bright spots for the Broncos in this
game today. It was also just one of the better plays I think we've seen in general throughout
the course of this NFL season. So I want to make sure to give some shine to that.
But let's just dive on it into it, man. I mean, they had no answer did the Denver Broncos
today for King Henry, 23 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns with a long B and 20.
I actually thought they did a good job of holding him and check out of the gate like in the first
quarter and as we got closer to halftime, but Derek Henry just chewed this Broncos
defense up and spit him out. And I think that's a bit of a humbling moment for this Broncos,
not just the team in general, but in particular the defense, which has been a top five unit
in the passing and rushing defensive categories.
I think I saw the graphic today on the TV.
They're like third overall in the NFL.
And they got humbled today.
They got absolutely humbled.
And I understand that Lamar Jackson, you know, is one of the most dynamic
playmakers in the NFL.
You know, you're talking about a two-time MVP, one of the best, you know,
one of the most prolific two-way type of quarterbacks that we've seen in the NFL,
maybe the most successful two-way quarterback on a consistent basis, right?
Because you had RG3 for a minute.
obviously you had Michael Vic back in the day, but a guy that's won two MVP's.
The one thing that's missing from Lamar Jackson's hardware is at least getting to a
Super Bowl.
He needs a ring as well, but he has not been able to get there.
But we know during the regular season that when Lamar Jackson is healthy and he's got
his offensive weapons around him, he is going to figure out a way to do incredible things.
And the Broncos defense just had no answers for Lamar and Derek Henry today.
And I think, you know, Derek Henry has just added such a layer of depth that Lamar Jackson hasn't previously had.
You're talking about a power runner and Derek Henry and your running back, which was causing fits all day.
I mean, it's like you make first contact.
The guy just kind of puts his head down and starts barreling forward for an extra yard or two.
And then Lamar Jackson, you know, playing off of that with his own, you know, running ability, his own skill set with the legs,
but then also with the ability to find open receivers and roll outside of the pocket today.
I mean, Lamar was fantastic.
Only threw back to pass 19 times in this game,
but still managed to put up 280 yards of passing offense
and three touchdowns for a quarterback rating of 158.3.
I believe, well, yeah, only sacked one time today on 11 pressures
was Lamar Jackson.
So the Broncos defense, which has been ferocious.
You know, I'm not trying to, you know, just say that there's this huge problem
or anything like that.
But as good as Nick Benito and all these guys are, man,
And, you know, when you play a team with the Baltimore Ravens, the level of difficulty goes up times three, it feels like.
And, you know, you give credit where credit is due.
The Broncos have done a great job of playing who's on their schedule and winning game by grinding them out or blowing them out like we saw against Carolina last week, like we saw against the Saints the week before.
But it's just one of those situations where, you know, the Broncos were just outclassed in a number of different facets throughout the course of the game here.
Zay Flowers was on fire today, caught two of those Lamar Jackson touchdowns.
He went five for a buck 27, an average of 25.4 yard per reception, you know,
which is not an easy thing to do against this Bronco secondary.
You know, you still got Patrick Tan back there.
You still got Riley Moss.
Like, Patrick Tan to me is still one of the best cornerback in the NFL.
But they got torched today straight up.
And I think a lot of that has to do with, I don't even want to say the inability to get
pressure on the quarterback because Lamar is just so shifty.
in the backfield that even when there is pressure,
he finds a way to kind of get out of it,
roll out of the pocket and find an open receiver on like a drag route
or just a scramble drill.
You know, defending Lamar Jackson is one of the toughest jobs
in the NFL on a consistent basis.
And look, he's not perfect.
We saw them lose last week to the Cleveland Browns, right?
So they're a vulnerable team.
But I actually think Baltimore losing last week in the fashion
in which they did to James Winston and the Browns psychologically
played a factor in the outcome of the.
this game because, you know, it's hard to keep this Ravens down, this Ravens team down for too long.
And Cleveland, you give them credit, quarterback swapped last week, playing with them themselves,
got to win. But what that did was a little bit of a gut punch to a Ravens team that's been
pretty good throughout the course of this season. Baltimore improves to five and three. They're now
two and one at home. And I just think that that had a little bit of extra focus and
urgency, I think, is the right word to kind of describe the Ravens today coming off that loss.
And I don't want to say that the Broncos weren't prepared, but I think it was pretty eye-opening just how big of a skill gap there was.
Maybe you guys don't agree.
Drop some comments.
Let me know how you guys are feeling.
I think the Ravens are, you know, a tier or two above where the Broncos are.
That's not to take anything away from Denver.
But again, it's just one of those situations where there's a team that's playoff hungry like Denver.
And there's a team that's pretty much molded into the playoffs that expects to contend for a Super Bowl in the Baltimore Ravens.
So, you know, we also got to talk about Bo Nix.
Of course, you know, he had that sick touchdown reception.
But this guy's got to have some help, man.
He's got to have some help.
I mean, Javonsie Williams is another subpar game.
The running game wasn't there.
Cortland Sutton had a phenomenal game, almost had a second touchdown there
in garbage time at the end of the game.
But, you know, outside of that, the receiving numbers are pitiful,
pretty embarrassing for the Denver Broncos, to be honest with you,
going up against the Ravens or not.
And look, they've done a good job of kind of masking some of their issues,
have the Broncos on offense, but I thought you saw today against the team that they're going to
have to beat if they do get to the playoffs, right? A team of that caliber, you would imagine,
you know, you just saw how many holes and flaws there are within this Denver Broncos offense.
So we'll see how Sean Payton responds. We understand, like I said,
that the skill positions have been a major point of, a major talking point in regards to deficiencies
from the Denver Broncos. But today, those deficiencies were glaring. And I saw some people on
Twitter talking about how it felt like this game was maybe a little bit similar to the Miami
Dolphins game last year where they got what 72 or 73 points hung on them.
I disagree with that.
I don't think it was that bad.
I mean, it was bad.
Like, don't get me wrong.
I'm not trying to sugarcoat it.
But like last, last year you saw the Broncos or the dolphins chew the Broncos up, spit
them out and then like chew them up again.
Today you just saw a much better football team, a hungry, a dialed football team in the
Baltimore Ravens, take advantage of a team in the Denver Broncos that quite frankly may have
been due for a little bit of a humbling. I know they lost that game to the Chargers a few weeks back,
but, you know, they've had some soft, they've had a pretty soft schedule for the most part
throughout the course of the season and they got a little bit of a, no, kicking the gut there did the Denver Broncos.
So it's all about how you respond. You know, the schedule is going to thicken up here a little bit for Denver.
And, you know, we'll just have to see how they come out of this game. What lessons do they learn?
Because I do think, like I said, this was a humbling experience for the Denver Broncos.
But one that I think they're going to be able to look back on and have a lot of fill.
a lot of tape to go over, a lot of internalization to kind of, you know, process and whatnot as they try to get the season back on track.
Not that it's off the rails, but now you're only a game above 500 at 5 and 4.
And, you know, you want to try to stay in that mix as much as you can and not have to rely on these other teams here down the stretch.
So we'll see how they do that.
But King Henry Show, Lamar Jackson Show.
Let's hit a quick break when we come back.
Let's dive into the Denver Broncos offense as they really struggled to get it going.
Only 10 points in this game, all of which came in the second quarter.
order for the Denver Broncos. So we'll dissect what went wrong and the overall deficiencies
on the Denver Broncos offense when we come back right here on your lockdown Broncos postcast.

Okay, but let's get right on back into it.
If you missed the first segment, if you're watching live,
we talked about the Denver Broncos defense and really just the effectiveness today
of Lamar Jackson and Derek Henry and how that re-end and Zay Flowers for that matter
as they slowed down the Broncos just completely.
They just dismantled their defense today.
Zay Flowers, five receptions for 127 yards, two touchdowns.
Derek Henry, 106 yards on 23 carries, two touchdowns.
Lamar Jackson didn't throw back to pass much, but he was 16 for 19, 280 passing yards,
and three touchdowns only sacked once.
Unfortunately, it was the polar opposite for the Denver Broncos and their offense here today.
Bo Nicks, you know, rough out there today, 19 to 33, 223 passing yards, no touchdowns,
and an interception.
He did have a touchdown reception, which I'll get to in just a moment,
but a quarterback rating of 65.6.
And the rushing attack today, just not anything that really moves a needle for you.
You know, Javante Williams, 12 carries for 42 yards.
That's the highlight of it.
Bo Nix was the Broncos second leading rusher with six carries for 36 yards.
And then everybody else was pretty bad out there today.
Adric Estimate had five for 35, you know, so I guess that's not awful.
But, you know, one of those was a 21-yard run for Estime.
Joliel McLaughlin, five for 10.
Michael Burton had two carries for negative one yards.
And that's just not going to do you any favors, man.
If you're a regular listener, I feel like I don't talk about this as much when the Broncos win,
because that's a cost for celebration and positivity and not as much nitpicking.
But when they lose, as I said in the open, as I said in the first segment,
you know, you see the, it's like Swiss cheese, right?
You see the holes kind of opening up.
And when you have a rookie quarterback in Bo Nix who won, I think it was offensive rookie of the month in October,
because I don't think they do a quarterback specific award.
But a guy who was, you know, on point throughout the month.
of October. You know, Sean Payton has an incredible record as a head coach throughout the month of
October. The one thing that you can consistently do outside of the lack of, you know,
especially due to the lack of weapons that the Denver Broncos have at the wide receiver position is give Bo Nix a solid foundation with your running game.
And when you're able to open, when you have the run game going and you're able to at least, you know, get,
you know, second and five, second and short with those solid first down runs and kind of keep defenses
guessing a little bit and respecting the run, it's going to go a long way at all.
opening up the passing game for Bo Nix and the offense.
And I understand that Denver was down early in this game.
So that probably, you know,
really kind of shifted their overall thought process, right?
It's harder to lean on the run when you're down multiple scores, right?
Because you've got to try to keep this thing close via the passing game.
We also all know that Sean Payton is a passing type of guy.
That's his dynamic.
But the Broncos run game just did Bo Nicks no favors today.
And really outside of Cortland Sutton,
the receiving game didn't do much for Bo Nix either.
I mean, so it was great today. Seven receptions for 122 yards, an average of 17.4 yards per reception.
Like I said, he almost had a second, well, that would have been his first receiving of the game,
but he had that sick touchdown pass to Bow Nicks on the reverse. I'm going to dive into that here in just a moment.
But let's get the bad out of the way. I mean, Javonte Williams was the Broncos second leading receiver today.
Two receptions for 42 yards. I mean, after that, it was pretty much crickets.
Troy Franklin, one for 19. Little Jordan Humphrey, two for 11. Devon Velae,
two for 11.
Jaliel McLaughlin, three for 10.
I mean, there was just, you know, only 225 yards of receiving offense today for the Denver Broncos as they just got crushed both in the run department and in the past department.
And look, does Bo Nicks shoulder some of the load out there?
Did he miss some throws?
Did he have some happy feet?
Absolutely.
I'm not trying to take any of that, you know, lightly or for granted or whatever the word that you want to use is.
You know, Bo Nicks did not have a great game, but I don't think that he was set up to have a great game was just as, you know,
ferocious as this Baltimore Ravens defense is and has been throughout the course of the season.
And just the overall lack of weapons that Denver has, you know, the trade deadlines rapidly
approaching.
We'll see if Denver ends up trying to make a move for a receiver, right?
They could have had DeAndre Hopkins for essentially nothing, not saying that that would have been the right move.
They'll see him next week when they take on the Kansas City Chiefs.
But, you know, they've got to just do something because what they have internally at the wider,
I mean, you know, the one thing, and I'm not trying to, you know, rub salt and a sore wound here.
you miss Tim Patrick.
You really miss Tim Patrick in games like these.
And would Tim Patrick have made the difference in this game?
No.
They probably still lose this game.
Maybe not as bad.
But Tim Patrick was your security blanket, all reliable.
And, you know, entering this season, you know, in training camp,
it was Cortland Sutton and Tim Patrick were like the two guys on the wide receiving death chart that you knew.
All right.
Like they've got some experience.
They've had some success, right?
Tim Patrick, big body receiver.
And they ended up cutting him.
And he goes to Detroit and is having him.
a decent season out there. We know, no Josh Reynolds out there after the scary shooting situation
with him. I don't feel like he's been overly effective, even in the games that he's played,
but you're still down a receiver in that front. And, you know, just whichever way you slice it,
man, just tough sledding for the Denver Broncos offense today, as they really struggled to get
anything going. I mean, they were shut out in the first quarter, all 10 points, the touchdown
of the field goal, coming in the second quarter, and then it was essentially crickets from there.
No points in the third, not even essentially crickets. It was crickets. No points in the third.
in the fourth quarter, and that's how you get your 41 to 10 final score.
Baltimore, you know, took a pretty sizable lead there in a half time,
seven points in the first, 17 points in the second,
14 more points in the third after they got the ball,
the ball to start the half,
and then a mere field goal to kind of put the game on ice there in the fourth quarter.
So a lot for the Denver Broncos to take away.
We'll see how they adjust, you know,
going up against the defending champions and division rival Kansas City Chiefs next week,
which we all know is not going to be easy,
regardless if the chiefs aren't the explosive offense as they once were.
They still know how to win games better than anybody in the NFL.
Just as Lamar Jackson, right?
I'm still having nightmares about that AFC championship game last year.
But just a tough game for the Denver Broncos.
So, all right, let me hit my final break.
We'll come back.
A couple of closing thoughts.
Take a look at that upcoming schedule because the Broncos have themselves a couple of interesting games in the next few weeks.
And we'll put a bow on the show right here on your locked on Broncos postcast.

Right around that midway point of the season, but plenty of Broncos football left.
And hopefully a couple of playoff episodes as well as the Broncos.
Despite the loss today, I think are still in good shape for the playoffs this year.
But let me just talk about this Bo Nix touchdown reception today.
I was confused.
I'm not even going to lie.
Like I saw the Broncos are in the red zone and I looked up right as the ball was snapped.
And I saw the receiver come down with the ball.
I'm like, who is that?
Is that Droughtman?
Is that great Dolson?
Like, I was like, who is that?
And it turns out it was Bo Nix on just an incredible snatch and grab it and then fights his way for the extra half yard to get into the end zone for a touchdown reception his first of his NFL career.
I don't think Bo Nix is going to have many touchdown receptions over the course of his NFL career.
You know, but it was a funky play.
But, you know, that's the Sean Payton, you know, dynamic is kind of hit him where they ain't, right?
you know, kind of get a little exotic with the play calling at times.
And it's one of those plays that if it doesn't work out,
you're probably sitting here like,
what the heck was Sean Peyton doing?
Like, what was that play?
But it did work out today for Sean Payton, the Denver Broncos.
So I want to just make sure,
because that was really the lone bright spot for the Broncos today,
I would say outside of Cortland Sutton's great receiving game,
but he's also the one that through the pass.
So I guess we can kind of lump that all into one.
But it's a sweet, sweet play there from Bo Nix.
But kind of in conclusion, guys,
I think this is not a season dehabilitating loss.
The Broncos are going to be fine.
Like I said, you know, a couple of times now throughout the program.
This is a gut check type of game for the Broncos where you kind of got knocked off the high horse that you were on.
We'll see, you know, how they respond here now.
They're going to have to figure it out quickly with the Chiefs next week.
That's going to be a very, very interesting match because now, you know, the Broncos did a good job of taking advantage of kind of the softer part of their schedule.
Regardless if we thought it was going to be soft or not, right?
They started out 0-2 losses of the Seahawks and the Steelers.
The Buccaneers at the time were playing good football with Godwin and Mike Evans.
They get the win there.
We all thought the Jets were going to be better.
They get the win there, 10 to 9.
They take advantage of a beat-up Raider.
I don't even want to say beat up.
Just a bad Raiders team.
34 to 18, a thorough victory there.
They lose a tough one to the Chargers, who I'm not really sure who the Chargers are.
That's going to hurt because it's a divisional game.
But they lose that one and then follow it up with consecutive wins.
Thursday night against the Saints, 33 to 10.
and then last Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, 28 to 14.
Now, if you include the game today, three games against teams that are all likely going to make the playoffs.
At Baltimore, as we talked about throughout the whole show, 41 to 10.
Next week, another early start time at 11 o'clock local time here in Colorado against the Kansas City Chiefs,
who I believe are they playing on Monday night football?
I know they haven't played yet.
But we'll see what they can do tonight, Canada Kansas City Chiefs.
And then an interesting game against the Atlanta Falcons,
who just got a big victory over the Dallas Cowboys,
and I believe they are also six and three.
So now these are three consecutive games now
where you're going up against, you know, teams that are, like I said,
you know two of the three.
Baltimore and the Chiefs, they're in the playoffs, right?
In Atlanta, I think is going to win that NFC South
with how things are going right now.
So can the Broncos figure out a way to win both of these games?
Because that would have been my argument before this game against Baltimore
is Baltimore, Kansas City, and Atlanta win two or three,
and you feel pretty good about yourself.
So obviously you lose today,
against Baltimore. How do you respond? You beat the Chiefs one time last year. You
snap that streak last year. Can you punch back and figure out a way to catch, you know,
Patrick Mahomes off guard and steal a win? Can you play in a type of way that Baltimore did today
focused and pissed off after coming off a loss? Do you have that bad taste in your mouth all
throughout the week with practice? I'm very curious to see how the Broncos will play next week
against a division rival on the road in Arrowhead against the Kansas City Chiefs. So again,
Chiefs and Falcons back-to-back games,
and then the schedule kind of softens up again at the Raiders,
home versus the Browns, home versus the Colts.
I think, you know, you should definitely win all three.
You can lose a game, right?
You know, it's hard to win in the NFL,
but like anything less than two and three is unacceptable for the Denver Broncos
if they want to make the playoffs.
If they win one of these next two and they split the Kansas City Chiefs and the Falcons,
you'll live with it.
But if they can take two or three,
I think it shows you that Broncos are figuring this thing out.
I'm just not so sure they have the personnel in order
to do so. I think the defense is one thing, right? Even though they got gashed today,
I believe in Vince Joseph and Nick Benito and Sartan and John Franklin Myers and
Barron Browning and all those guys to figure it out. The question I have is on the offense.
And that comes down to Sean Payton and what his ability to essentially turn water into wine
with this Broncos receiving group because there's not a lot of talent, a lot of one
dimensional type of play calling. Bo Nix is still a rookie as impressive as, I don't even want to say
impressive. Bo Nix looked good, solid.
7.5, 8 out of 10, 8.5 out of 10 on some days, on some drives throughout the month of October.
But, you know, far from Jaden Daniels, who I know, Bo beat him in the rookie the month type of voting or whatever it might be.
Like, you watch Jaden Daniels, though, and you're like, okay, like, this guy's got all the makings.
I think we're still trying to figure out what Bo Nix is going to be.
He's got some of that happy feat, as Sean Payton alluded to earlier in the year, little Ferris Bueller still in him.
So I think Bo Nix is on the right track.
But all the support that you can give Bo Nix
with the receivers and the run game and the play calling
is going to ultimately be what I think sets him
and the Denver Broncos up for success the rest of the way this season.
So we'll see what they can do.
But in conclusion for today, guys,
a disappointing game for the Baltimore or for the Denver Broncos
as they lose to the Baltimore Ravens 41 to 10,
your final score.
Only all 10 points for Denver coming in the second quarter.
Shut out in three of the four quarters.
Bo Nicks struggled.
but again, Russian game and receiving court were not on part today,
outside of Cortland Sutton, who had seven receptions for 122 yards,
and the Broncos defense had no answers from Lamar Jackson and Derek Henry,
as they combined for five total touchdowns between the two of them.
So that is going to do it for me, folks.
Really appreciate you guys tuning in with me on this Sunday afternoon.
If you want more Broncos content, I know Cody and Sayre have the locked on Bronco show,
probably recording as we speak.

Disappointing game, a lot to learn from.
We'll see how the Broncos respond, hopefully a victory show next week as the Denver Broncos now turn the page to take on the Kansas City Chiefs.
Enjoy your Sunday, folks.
