Locked On Broncos - Daily Podcast On The Denver Broncos - MEASURE: How Denver Broncos TRADE For Jaylen Waddle STACKS UP With Myles Garrett Trade

Episode Date: June 3, 2026

The Denver Broncos made the trade of the NFL offseason when they acquired wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, but the Los Angeles Rams trade for Myles Garrett this week changes the entire NFL landscape. Cody... Roark and Sayre Bedinger react to how both trades impact their respective teams, and discuss why Waddle's addition does more for Denver as whole than A.J. Brown's trade to the New England Patriots.   Plus, why Justin Strnad and Pat Bryant are two prime candidates to break out the most this season, and why Que Robinson and Sai'vion Jones are candidates to emerge out of nowhere.   Cody Roark is a credentialed beat reporter for Mile High Sports and covers the Broncos daily in person. Sayre Bedinger is the site expert for Predominantly Orange. Both bring Broncos Country the most in-depth and objective coverage of the Denver Broncos.   WANT MORE DAILY DENVER BRONCOS CONTENT? Starting point is 00:00:00 The Denver Broncos trade this off season for wide receiver Jalen Waddle was huge, but how does it stack up against other blockbuster trades around the league? You are locked on Broncos, your daily Denver Broncos podcast. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. What's up, Broncos country? Cody Warwick, Sarah Benninger here for another episode of the show is we're going to share who we think as OTAs kicks off, who might be the biggest surprise player that emerges out of nowhere for this team.
Starting point is 00:00:35 Plus we'll dive deep into maybe the in-house surprise. Who could emerge that might have a bigger impact this upcoming season compared to last year? We're going to kick things off by talking about the Jalen Wado trade here for Denver being massive for the team. But there have been some other trades this off season, including the blockbuster that we saw earlier this week with Miles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams. How does this stack up against that? Are these championship moves to get all that here on today's episode of the show? Sarah, I'm curious for your thoughts. Obviously, the NFL world was shocked earlier this week.
Starting point is 00:01:05 week as Miles Garrett was traded away from the Cleveland Browns to the Los Angeles Rams. And the Rams are a team that have constantly embraced the forget them picks mentality. They already had made some offseason trades to bolster their secondary at the cornerback position. Oh, and by the way, now they go out there and they get Miles Garrett. So that week three game, the Denver's going to have to play the Rams prime time. That's going to be huge. That one becomes tougher even more so now here. But the Broncos, they made the offseason trade for Jalen Wattow.
Starting point is 00:01:35 which was the highly most talked about trade when it happened. Obviously, there's taking a back step or a backdoor to this now trade that happened. Comparatively, how does Jalen's trade measure up against this trade? And we'll go through some other ones as well. Well, I think the Miles Garrett trade, Cody, really overshadows just about everything because it puts the reigning NFL MVP and the reigning defensive player of the year on the same team for the very first time in league history. is that going to happen?
Starting point is 00:02:05 I mean, that's pretty crazy to think about, right? And Miles Garrett, though he's been in the NFL since 2017, right? Or something like that. I think it's 2017. He's only 30 years old going on 31. So, I mean, this guy is at the peak of his physical abilities. He's a win now type of playmaker for that defense on the L.A. Rams who already had the number one offense in pretty much every metric last year.
Starting point is 00:02:28 So to me, I've said this on the show before. I thought previously that the Jalen Waddle trade was the most impactful addition to an already loaded team that any team around the NFL made. However, I think now the Miles Garrett trade sort of overshadows it in terms of just like, all right, you want to talk about adding impact to a really good roster. You want to talk about adding any elite player at a premium position. Yes, the Broncos did that with Jalen Waddle, but the Miles Garrett trade feels like it's on another level of just absolute madness and insanity when you talk about that Rams team, what they already had, and now what they've brought in, and who might follow him there?
Starting point is 00:03:11 Honestly, he's getting Aaron Donald thinking about coming out of retirement. So I think that Miles Garrett trade is really, that's the benchmark of, I mean, when you talk about players getting traded, how many better players than that have been traded in NFL history? Not many. And I would agree. I think, you know, we were excited about the J-Lon one. we still are, but this trade right here kind of blows every other trade that has happened this offseason out of the water. And here's my thing. I'm just thankful Miles Garrett wasn't traded to an
Starting point is 00:03:40 AFC West Division rival. Now, obviously there's another trade that did happen in the AFC that does impact Denver Broncos, A.J. Brown going from the Philadelphia Eagles to the New England Patriots in one of the worst kept secrets in NFL history as of late. And Denver's obviously going to be facing New England week 17 of the regular season. So you look at all of this there and all the pieces that are kind of fitting in around the NFL and the Rams obviously they traded for Trent McDuffie from the Kansas City Chiefs. They acquired him obviously this offseason.
Starting point is 00:04:11 They signed another Chiefs cornerback, Watson, I believe. So for me, I look at Denver. I'm like, okay, you know what? This gives the Broncos an opportunity to go through and continue not only with their player development, but also for Jaylon Wado, I have the impact we think he is. comparatively, maybe we could compare the Waddle trade to the A.J. Brown trade, which one do you think is actually more impactful between these two? I think it's Jalen Waddle, Cody, because nobody's receivers have let their quarterback down more
Starting point is 00:04:40 than Bo Nix and his receivers, right? Over the last two seasons, I know that there's maybe some arguments here and there to be made about other teams, but as talented as that Broncos receiver room is, they have, you know, we can't deny, struggled with dropped passes. They have struggled with creating consistent separation. They have struggled at times to be any form of consistent other than consistently inconsistent, right? And that is the struggle that Bo Nix was hopefully going to have cured this offseason
Starting point is 00:05:11 is this idea that, hey, the wide receiver position needs somebody that can consistently get open. That's not going to drop a ton of passes. And those are things that Jalen Waddle brings to the table. So in many ways, it does feel like the Bronel. Broncos added that missing piece. Now, with the AJ Brown trade, yeah, he's an awesome player. And that's a really big time move for a team like New England,
Starting point is 00:05:33 whose receiver position might have been the worst on their roster without that trade, right? Because they let go of Stefan Diggs. But to me, Stefan Diggs already showed last year how big of an impact a true wide receiver one can have on defense. And so it's not like the Patriots are really adding something that they didn't have, whereas the Broncos, I think, are. I think the Patriots are adding a different type of player in A.J. Brown, certainly a younger
Starting point is 00:05:59 player in A.J. maybe even a slightly more dynamic player because we know A.J. can do a lot of things after the catch physically that Stefan Diggs, just their different body types. The Broncos have brought in a player who is that missing piece for the offense. And I don't think that's exactly what New England was doing. And maybe the conversation now between these two trades kind of shifts into who may, which unit better, right? I think theoretically you and I have gone through a handful of scenarios that the addition of Jalen Waddle, if Jalen can be who Jalen has always been inside of this offense, not only does it help the run game with J.K. Dobbins, R.J. Harvey, Jonah Coleman. It opens things up
Starting point is 00:06:38 for Cortland Sutton, the other wide receivers, and it makes life easier for Bo Nix. You look at the addition to A.J. Brown, tremendous player, unbelievable player, a guy that we also thought would be in the mix for Denver this offseason if they hadn't traded for Jalen Waddle. my question now is, does the Jalen trade make Denver better in almost every category? And how does that compare to AJ? Where does AJ make the Patriots better than Denver in this particular scenario? I think for Drake May, you get a guy like AJ Brown is your security blanket. That's a nice thing to have right there.
Starting point is 00:07:10 Consistently, AJ's tough, he's durable and he's got the longevity to play, and he's not injured often. Whereas Stefan Diggs was, you know, it's a couple things here and there coming off the ACL. I still think that the advantage now shifts to Denver in terms of what Jalen brings to the table, even though AJ is going to have a positive impact on New England. I completely agree because I think that when you look at, like you said, which team added more, it's got to be the Broncos. I mean, you bring everyone back, plus you add Jalen Waddle. For the Patriots, it was subtracting Stefan Diggs and, you know,
Starting point is 00:07:43 adding Romeo Dobbs and now A.J. Brown. And we're not talking about the Romeo Dobbs move, but we are talking about what. impact AJ can have on that offense. And yes, we've seen like he has been one of the best and most consistent receivers in the NFL over the last handful of years. Now, just like last year, it gives defenses a player to fixate on. And it forces Drake May probably to go elsewhere pretty consistently because AJ Brown is now going to get that, you know, what we know as the Cortland Sutton treatment. And that doesn't, that doesn't mean he's going to get stopped every time.
Starting point is 00:08:16 But what it does mean is that you have a focal point of your passing game like that. I think it does change the approach that defenses take in going up against a guy like that. When you have a star player, how many times did we talk about that with, we talked about it with locked on Packers. We talked about it with locked on bills. We talked about it with a number of teams to where with the Broncos specifically matching up against New England, it's helpful to have a number one player like A.J. Brown at wide receiver. because then you could just say, Pat, go cover A.J. Brown all game.
Starting point is 00:08:49 And he's capable of taking guys like that out of the equation. So for a competitive standpoint, I feel like it really plays into Denver's favor. AJ Brown's a great player. There's no denying that. Nobody's diminishing that. We're amplifying and highlighting that because we're saying he's going to draw the attention of a guy like Pat Sertan in that game late in the season or if the two teams play again in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:09:12 But when you have that type of player that your offense is, filtered through, it almost plays into Denver's favor because now you have to go to your secondary weapons. Yeah. And I think that Denver's weapons all across the board, at least on paper right now with Cortland and Jalen together, I love that. That's one of my favorite combinations I think you can have from a skill set standpoint. And then we really like Troy Franklin. We really like Pat Bryant, Marvin Mims. Denver's in a really good spot here comparatively here. But Miles Garrett trade. It takes the cake for all Blockbuster trades this offseason around. the NFL and it could be that week three matchup a potential Super Bowl preview, at least a hopeful
Starting point is 00:09:50 Super Bowl preview. And the Broncos, they'll be tested early at one of the most important stretches of their schedule early on here. But coming up next, Broncos country, Sarah and I, we wrote down and we don't even know each other's choices yet, but we wrote down who we think could be the biggest in-house player that could surprise in 2026 compared to what they did in 2025. You'll get that here on today's episode of the show. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. The Denver Broncos care about in-house player development and even on a loaded roster, believe it or not, there's a lot of opportunities this season for in-house players to not just develop,
Starting point is 00:11:28 but break through and become significant contributors on this team. We're going to talk about our picks for who that could be on today's episode, Lockdown Broncos and Broncos Country. We appreciate all of you so much for tuning in, rocking with us every single day. Starting point is 00:11:52 Click the link in the show notes or check out Lockdown, Broncos. That supercast.com. Cody, I'm excited. I always love it when we have our mystery names written down on the whiteboards here. And I'm excited to talk about this because this is an underrated subject every single year, I feel like. When it comes to in-house player development, a lot of times you look at a roster, you look at a depth chart and you say, okay, I know what this guy is because of what we saw last year.
Starting point is 00:12:17 But who a player was last year has really nothing to do with what they're going to be this coming season. Case in point, Nick Benito, 22, his rookie season, barely played it all, even going into his second year in the NFL, he was a backup to Randy Gregory and Frank Clark. And then all of a sudden, boom, he emerges onto the scene, becomes the best pass rusher on the team, an all pro. I mean, everything. So not to say that everybody's going to become. an all pro, but who is your pick as the biggest in-house player that you feel is going to develop
Starting point is 00:12:48 into a significant contributor in 2026? I talked about this guy a little bit earlier this week in a bonus episode of the show. I'm going with wide receiver, Pat Bryant. Now, I don't know who you got because I know you and I were talking about. We went into this whole entire exercise blindly. I'm going with Pat Bryant for the reasons I outlined in the bonus show. Look, we talk about Cortland Sutton and Jalen Waddle, the attention we think those guys are going to get. going to happen with the offense when defenses shift their focus to those guys if they're both on the same side. It's where guys like Troy Franklin can come into the mix. But Pat Bryant, top 20 player in the NFL in terms of separation created on average right there at about
Starting point is 00:13:26 2.4 yards of separation at the time he makes a catch versus a pass that's thrown incomplete and the nearest defender. He's a top 20 player in that category. I think when you watch the tape, you certainly see that. He's got really good hands. He blocks on the perimeter. He's a willing and engaged player. And because of Jalen and because of Cortland, I think he's going to have more opportunities this year early on, considering he knows the offense. And I think he's going to be one of those guys alongside Troy Franklin is going to make a ton of plays. But Pat Bryant is my pick. Who is your selection here in our exercise? Well, I want to play a little game with this. First of all, I love the Pat Bryant pick. I think he is going to be awesome. He wasn't the guy that I chose,
Starting point is 00:14:06 however. Okay. I'm going to give you, I'm going to give you a couple of numbers here. And I want to see if you can guess who I'm talking about based on these numbers, okay? And it's going to be a little obscure. So if you're listening, okay, play along and see if you can figure this out as I'm describing this guy. Okay, he played 55% of the team's snaps last season. He played 59% the year before. And in terms of career starts, okay, this guy has been with the Broncos for a handful of
Starting point is 00:14:33 years. In terms of career starts, he has 21 out of 83 games played and he started 16. over the last two seasons. So half basically each season. Those are the clues I'm going to give you. I want to know if you have a guess before I reveal who it is. But this is the guy that I think is going to be the biggest breakthrough in-house player. Justin Sternad?
Starting point is 00:14:54 Yes. Wow. I pick you no time flat. You know why? You know how I picked it up is because, well, you said 16 starts and I knew off the top. And I had one of those stats. I'm like, Justin started eight games last season for Denver. So that was like, man, love the pick.
Starting point is 00:15:10 Look at that. That's a great. You picked up on that quick. I didn't say even defense. So I mean, hey, I love that. But yes, believe it or not, Justin Sernat has only, he's never played 60% even of the defensive snaps. Like, I think that's pretty crazy to think about when you consider the impact that he's even made over the last two seasons, right? When he's started in place of guys, he's been out there on the field quite a lot. I mean, over 500 snaps over the last two seasons. So it kind of just feels like, man, we've seen him out there enough to have considered, well, we've probably seen the best of Justin, right? I don't think so, Cody. I really don't. I mean, he had 58 total tackles, eight quarterback hits, four and a half sacks last season. He obviously had the game changing interception against the Giants. I just believe with a full workload that Justin Sernad could be the biggest breakout player
Starting point is 00:16:06 on the Denver Broncos. And he's, what is he right now? He's 29 going on 30 this coming season. It'll be 30 on August 21st. So he's going to be 30 years old. He's in peak physical condition. He knows the defense. He's trusted.
Starting point is 00:16:21 I think he's going to be that guy, Cody, that we've seen nothing yet when it comes to what Justice Sernad can do in terms of his overall productivity. He's seen an increased level of productivity the last handful of years. But, I mean, his knowledge of this defense, having been in this system for as long as he has, I feel like is a huge benefit to him. Now is a full-time starter. I think we're going to see a lot because he's arguably Denver's best blitzing inside linebacker that they've had.
Starting point is 00:16:47 He's constantly coming up with big plays. TFL is on second and long situations or he's stuffing guys, tackling them for a loss to force a third and long, third and medium. That's where we've consistently seen him. And he's obviously been one of Denver's better special teams players, but they're not going to need him on that anymore. I agree with you on Sternad.
Starting point is 00:17:05 And the thing is it also highlights how important player development has been. And he's one of the last few guys to be a John L.A draft pick, I think besides Cortland, Sutton and Garrett Bulls, if I'm not mistaken. I've actually got a bonus episode show coming out later today where we are talking about how Denver's in-house development is the best in the NFL and reasons why Justin is a great example of that. I'm excited. And on top of that, he's got captain traits. That's one thing I think not a lot of people are realizing about Justin.
Starting point is 00:17:32 He's entrusted by this coaching staff. I do wonder how it's going to go. Like, will the Broncos have two captains at inside linebacker? I think that's going to be a little unlikely, though I don't think Sean Peyton really cares about who or like if it's got to be a certain position, it's about the quality of guys you have there. And I think Justin has taken on so much. He's done a great job already as a leader. So I love the pick. I think out of anybody, even my pick that I picked up there, I feel like Sternad would be a home run selection for anybody.
Starting point is 00:18:00 And of course, Broncos country, if there's a player that you feel like could be in a. House had, you know, had an impact last year, but could have a bigger impact this upcoming season. Make sure you drop it in. Let us know here on today's episode, Locked on Broncos. As we get ready to get into maybe the biggest out of nowhere surprise for this upcoming season, that's the next category. We're going to play. I'm racking my brain right now, trying to think of a way to not tell you who my guy is, but to get you to guess it. But it also, I feel like is going to seem very, very evident. We'll see if Sarah can figure it out here on the other side on today's episode, Locked on Broncos.

As we go through and talk about which player could be the biggest out of nowhere, and once again, Bronco's country, it's got to be out of nowhere, not somebody who's already established, surprise. this upcoming season. There are a handful of options, whether it be rookies, second year players, backup guys that might emerge into potential starting roles. If they take advantage of opportunities
Starting point is 00:20:11 in the event of injuries, there's so many different names. And we will see if Sarah can guess my player. Sarah, I'll give you a clue first and foremost here. This is a player who had 12 tackles last season for Denver. Combining defense and special teams, he's a player who played 34% of Denver's defensive snaps last season, and he played 56% of the team. He played 56% of special team snap while only appearing in six total games for the Broncos last year. Hmm. This is, that's a,
Starting point is 00:20:41 that's a really good one because now, now you got me thinking because initially my brain was going towards Devin Key. And then you said, thing about only playing six games last year. I'm just, let me just, okay, Savian Jones.
Starting point is 00:20:55 Is it Savian Jones? That was my backup name. That was my backup name. Man, okay, one more guess, one more guess. Let me see.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Q Robinson. Bang, nailed it. There you go. It is Q. It is Q. That is my guy that I think could take a step kind of out of nowhere. Like we saw flashes last year, right? But we also talked about can he have a bigger impact than he did last year?
Starting point is 00:21:18 Now with an anticipated more snaps that we project for him to have this upcoming season beyond Dondre Tilton or maybe even maybe even competing with Dandre for that third spot behind Nick Benito and Jonathan Cooper, he was my guy that I feel like is going to come out of nowhere, be the biggest. out of nowhere surprise is going to have a heavy impact and contributions here, at least for Denver defensively. I love that pick because Q Robinson was in the preseason last year. I think one of our favorite guys to watch. And then when he got on the field during the regular season, we're all like, man, it stinks that the Broncos have to basically deactivate him each week because they have so many good edge players that, you know,
Starting point is 00:21:55 he doesn't get to play. And so I'm excited to see him get more opportunities this season. I'm glad you didn't choose Savion Jones, because Savian Jones is my guy. And I wanted to go even more obscure, but I thought, let's keep it to, let's talk about this because John Franklin Myers leaves in free agency. The Broncos use their top draft pick on Tyler Ognettum, right?
Starting point is 00:22:19 And they've got Inoma Uwazerike, they've got other players. I kind of almost feel like Savian Jones is flying so far under the radar that he's borderline, not even on the radar at this point. He's like, he's like one of the most least talked about. Yeah, not one of the most least. He's one of the least talked about. Excuse me. My gosh, I'm so excited about this.
Starting point is 00:22:40 He's one of the least talked about players on this team. And I could see him being like, man, the Broncos, this is why they let John Franklin Myers walk. It wasn't to get a fourth round pick. That's how, that's how little, like, people are believing in the Savion Jones breakout this year is they're like, well, the Broncos are letting John Franklin Myers go because they want to get a fourth round competitive. compensatory pick in the 2027 NFL draft.
Starting point is 00:23:04 And it's like, well, wait a second. They let him go because of the guy they traded up to get in last year's draft at the bottom end of the third round. They've developed him for an entire year. He's, you know, taken some lumps on the field. He went out there, got some reps throughout the course of the season. I could see him being that guy. My super obscure pick, Cody, was actually a guy that I did a bonus show on Joseph Manjack,
Starting point is 00:23:27 because I'm, I'm believing in the low of wonder. Yeah, I'm believing in the. no glove wonder on that side of the ball. But to keep it less, you know, in the more like, okay, this guy could realistically play a lot of snaps. I think Savian Jones and Q Robinson are two really good picks. Very interesting that three of our four players are on the defense, which was one of the best in the NFL last season. And that's what you want to highlight to the depth. And look, I think a lot of people are also forgetting what George Peyton said about Savion Jones at the end of the year,
Starting point is 00:23:58 at the end of the year press conference. he mentioned specifically that he's one of the players that they feel like has a lot of high upside on, maybe some of the most upside out of anybody and considering the circumstances. And I think maybe it has also skewed because Denver went out and they drafted Oneedum in the third round. But from what I understand, the Broncos plan and the hope is that Savion takes the first opportunities there. And then they rotate Oneedum in alongside him in different packages because you think about it, these guys also need to supplement what Zach Allen can do. When Zach comes off the field for a breather, you might have Stavion and Oneedem on the field,
Starting point is 00:24:33 a defensive end at the same time while you have Malcolm Rocher, DJ Jones at the nose tackle position. I like the Denver's embrace kind of this flexibility, but you are right. There is a reason that they let JFM go, even though you and I were both on board with paying JFM and saying, hey, keep him here in Denver. This is the reason why the Broncos let him go. The overall cost of JFM was going to take them out of the equation, but they do believe in Savian and they're excited to see what Wazerike can do going into another season. And then they really like the upside and the traits that Oneedem certainly has.
Starting point is 00:25:05 I agree. I like these selections here. Yeah, it gives the Broncos so much more flexibility on the defensive side when you're able to have these younger players coming up through the ranks, right? When it's not just, hey, this guy was a high draft pick or this guy got a couple of special team snaps, when these players are actually developing and actually showing side. of being starter, you know, caliber, it gives you those options to take Zach Allen off the field. You know, when you when you really would otherwise think, okay, well, Zach now is going to have to
Starting point is 00:25:38 play 100% of the snaps again. Remember when he played close to a thousand snaps over a thousand snaps at one season? And it's like, okay, we reflect on last year. And what we learned is that Zach Allen played too much. So the solution for getting him off the field and keeping him fresh and at the top of the NFL or right behind Miles Garrett in terms of quarterback hits is to take him off the field ironically, right? And you want to make sure that you have guys that you trust to be able to do that. It's funny to me, Cody, the Broncos, the highest draft pick that they have on their defensive front, on the defensive line, excuse me, is his own yet.
Starting point is 00:26:16 I mean, that's their highest drafted guy. Otherwise, it's been free agent pickups or, you know, Savion Jones was a later third round pick. So they're finally starting to invest draft capital in those guys. And I think you're seeing the fruits of that in the player development. Now, offensively, if I have to go off the cuff, I had two guys written down offensively, Cody. Joseph Manjack was one. I think he's going to be so much fun to watch progress this offseason. And if he's not, I'm going to be the guy that's like, hey, remember when you talked all that time about Joseph Manjack?
Starting point is 00:26:47 But Cody Schrader is another one because the Broncos kept four backs on the roster last year. Cody Schrader plays special teams. He's a bigger body. And there's a reason why the Broncos kind of like they claimed him off waivers and they kept him around, sign him to the reserve futures deal. I think there's a reason for that. So I'm excited to find out what that is. And wouldn't shock me if Schrader is one of those guys that competes and maybe pushes out Tyler Biday. If Denver does keep four backs on the 53, right, pushes out Tyler Biday, maybe Julio-McLaughlin.
Starting point is 00:27:19 If Jolul wants to get an opportunity to go elsewhere, I think that's very much a possibility. for him, even though he's trying to compete for a roster spot. He's hungry. He's eager. I think Schrader is one of those guys because of what you mentioned as special teams. He's a little bigger guy. Now, not necessarily the fastest guy, but he could also return some kicks for you as well. I think so much of that is going to play into the equation here for what the Broncos ultimately
Starting point is 00:27:41 decide to do as roster cuts now are going to happen a lot earlier. They're not going to happen the Tuesday after the preseason. Then it's going to literally happen on Sunday. So there are going to be some preseason games. And on Saturday, Denver's final preseason game will end. on a Friday night and then Sunday they have to have their 53 man roster all put together. So a lot of moving pieces here as the off season goes on. Those are some under the radar names here, Broncos Country.
