Starting point is 00:00:40 We'll tell you, O'Reilly Moss, three players. We highlighted earlier. Riley Moss, Evan Engra, Marvin Mims, three players in contract years for this Broncos football team had themselves a standout day during Friday's practice. Day three of Trini Camp and the first day where fans were in attendance. We'll go through and recap some of the standout performances, what we saw ultimately on the first official full day of practice for your team here. Sarah. Let's start off with Evan Ingram and Marvin Mims. Kind of a little bit of a focus here on the offensive side of the ball. Evan, we all know, is entering the last year of his deal.

Starting point is 00:01:10 The Broncos, they went out and they drafted a couple of guys in the NFL draft. In particular, Justin Jolie kind of fits his archetype a little bit. And Sean Payton has made it not so much of a secret to say that there is competition across the board and even mentioned tight end. So for Evan coming out here in training camp, you know he's a solidified veteran going out there and making plays. It's something we wanted to see because he had momentum. back in OTAs. Well, today was a day where the Broncos, they went down field to him and he came up big on two plays. Jared Stidham on a deep over route, probably 30 plus yards would have been a touchdown. And then Sam Ellinger found him as well. And Sean Payton said after practice, want to get

Starting point is 00:01:47 his speed involved. He's got really good ability to run and they want to be able to capitalize on that good day from Evan Ingram. It's great to hear that he's already starting to stack days because what do we know about Evan Ingram? We know that he brings a little bit of a missing to the Denver Broncos offense that we were just longing for all throughout last season, right? Anybody to make plays at the tight end position would have been nice. But you signed this guy to come in and play this specific role and then couldn't quite carve out that role consistently throughout the course of the season. And what made it even more torturous was when Evan played well last season, man, we were like, all right, this must be the beginning. You know, when he played

Starting point is 00:02:27 well against Philadelphia. We're like, all right, here we go. He plays well against the Giants. All right. here we go, played well against the commanders. All right, maybe they were saving him for the playoff run. Who knows what's going on here? But it just wasn't there consistently. And so my question is with Davis Webb calling the plays, our most optimistic view has been, well, Davis was a big reason why Evan signed in Denver in the first place. So it stands to reason that Davis is going to try to get him more and more involved.

Starting point is 00:02:56 What's different about what they're doing with Evan? Is it simply just that they're targeting him? or are they utilizing him different? I know you can only say so much in terms of plays and schemes and formations and all that stuff. But what's different in this year's? I mean, it's one practice, right? But what you're seeing out there that's different about what we saw last season? Well, it does feel like at least early on the first few days.

Starting point is 00:03:18 And look, Adam Trotman came back on a three-year deal. But it feels like when Denver's an 11 personnel, they're using a lot of Evan in this situation, right? With Cortland, with Troy, with Jalen Waddle. And then even like not necessarily Troy, but Marvin, with. Pat Bryant, like they're rotating guys in a receiver, but the one guy that I've seen particularly in 11 personnel has been Evan Ingram. And so I think that they like that. And the thing is with Evan, he may not be the biggest guy, but he's going to be a

Starting point is 00:03:46 willing blocker. He's going to be a guy that's going to try to get the right angle. That's something you can work on with him, but you didn't bring him in to be a blocking guy. So kind of similar, sir, and now was a little different, right? Going back to the preseason game last year where he caught that underneath drag and then was able to get up field, I mean, down the street. stretch last season. There were a couple of games. I can go back to the Jacksonville game in particular. Remember they, the Broncos needed some momentum in that third quarter and they hit Evan

Starting point is 00:04:09 on that kind of deep overrout against the Jaguars that got them into the red zone. And unfortunately, they couldn't do anything. I don't even think they came in with points from that drive, which is also mind-boggling to look back at. But it was kind of like that in terms of how they got him involved, obviously in the passing game here. I think you're going to see a lot of that underneath stuff. Because I think the idea is to get Evan the ball in space and then use his athleticism, his ability to run. Use that to your advantage here. So I'm very excited to see that. The other guy we've got to talk about Marvin Mims. There's been a lot of conversation about Marvin this offseason. Is this the last ride for Marvin? Well, I'll tell you this. Even with the wide receiver rotation going on as

Starting point is 00:04:45 is, Marvin had himself a day. He caught a pass in seven on seven early on from Bo Nix. But then in one of the team periods, he was able to beat Riley Moss and get downfield, deep down the left sideline, 50 plus yard, catch from him from Bow on a well-placed football. And I would say for Marvin, great concentration for him just tracking the football. And Riley was underneath, right, in trailing technique because, hey, Marvin got a step on him on that one. But he was able to focus as Riley was starting to try to catch up a little bit and try to get back of that hip pocket. And he just caught it. Tough contested catch there, being able to focus downfield and track it. Say that's one thing he's done well. Sir, I mean, I think if we look at anybody on this roster

Starting point is 00:05:23 a wide receiver, Marvin has been the guy that can track the deep ball and the harder ones. Like, you go back to the Cincinnati Bengals game against Joe Burrow and them. pass he had the one, how high it was in the air from Bo Nix, one of the, the longest throws in next gen stats history, he was able to track it in. That's one strength about Marvin. I think he's got probably better than anybody else right now in the wide receiver room. Well, and that translates also with his special team's ability, right? Because obviously to be a great punt returner in the NFL, you have to have great focus. You've got to be able to track the ball well. You've got to have strong hands. And you've got to be able to come down with the ball

Starting point is 00:05:57 in traffic and know what to do with it right away. I think those are the things that Marvin brings to the table. I saw a couple of reports, Cody. I know I think Luca Evans noted that he was running a more expanded, diversified, I think was the word that he used, route tree at practice as well, which you talk about these guys all in a contract year. It starts to get me thinking and dreaming up. Okay, so at what point are the Broncos going to start making offers, right?

Starting point is 00:06:22 Because we want to keep this core intact. We want to keep this band together. And if Marvin is finally going to start getting involved just before he's about to leave, that would be kind of upsetting, right? It would be great to have him obviously play well for this team and see his role expand. But look, Marvin has never played even 40% of the offensive snaps.

Starting point is 00:06:42 And his most effective year came two years ago when he played less than 300. So to me, you're looking at somebody that, okay, we feel like we know his talent and we feel like we understand what he does really well. And he continues to come up in clutch moments for us.

Starting point is 00:06:58 He continues to come down with the ball when we chuck it to him deep. So why can't we figure out a way to get him more involved? I like that there's a concerted effort to do that. But also, I've been seeing some reports from you and others that, not necessarily specifically from you, Cody, but practice reports on MIMS and things like that that are saying, hey, the pre-snap motion has been more so part of his game as well.

Starting point is 00:07:23 Those two factors right there, pre-snap motion, plus getting him a diversified route tree, to me indicate long-term thinking with Marvin as opposed to just, hey, what can he do for us right now? We also talk about the clutch factor here with Marvin. So the Broncos at the end of the day, they always have a competitive move the ball period, right? They run a simulation either end of half or end of game.

Starting point is 00:07:46 It was an end of half scenario, first half with a zero zero score on the scoreboard, and the Broncos had one minute and 50 seconds to try to get into field goal range. And we saw Bo Nix, his first pass attempt, to Cortland Sutton end up getting tipped. So it fell incomplete and the clock was around 122. On the next play, Bo had a quick shot to Troy Franklin on a 10-yard comeback for a first down.

Starting point is 00:08:08 That brought the clock down to 106. And then Knicks had a scramble pass where he stepped up in the pocket, moved to his left and then fired a shot to Cortland. Not sure if it was completion or not. Like, it was caught by Sutton, but they whistled it as well. So not sure if the offense blew it as a sack. We're not sure exactly what it was. But then he fires a quick shot to Jalen Waddle for.

Starting point is 00:08:28 five. So then it brought up a third and five scenario. And at this point, the Broncos, I think there was like 15 seconds left. Third and five scenario, Bo Nix hit Marvin Mims on kind of a deep out route that would have given them, I'd say good field position to kick probably a chip shot field goal with three seconds left and the end of the half scenario. So once again, Marvin coming up clutch, which is the one thing that we've talked about with him that highlights something that this Broncos offense needs, not just as a gadget player, but as a more focal part of the offense going forward, he and Evan Ingram definitely need to be used a lot more of this upcoming season.

Starting point is 00:09:03 And speaking of guys stepping up and making plays, Riley Moss, the other guy entering a contractor, had himself a really nice day at Broncos camp. Well, he might have given up a big play to Marvin Mims, but, Riley Moss still stood out in a big way and a good way at day one of Denver Broncos training camp after a couple of acclimation practices. The heat was turned up a little bit there on Friday for the Broncos. Cody's got some great observations.

Starting point is 00:11:35 I've already heard some stuff off camera and certainly excited for all of you to hear. So we're going to break it down. But Broncos country want to quickly say thank you to every single one of you that makes us your first listen of the day, every single day. Cody, let's talk about Riley Moss having a good day. I think a lot of times there's conflicting feelings when you see something like, oh, Marvin Mims catches a 50 plus yard bomb down the sideline from Riley Moss.

Starting point is 00:12:06 But Riley also had a couple of good periods today as well, a couple of big plays. Let's hear about that. What did you see from Riley out there at practice on Friday? Yeah, I mean, Riley's always the energy guy too. I mean, this guy is bouncy, spring. He has a lot of pep in his step throughout warmups. He's got a good mindset and a good attitude, right? Because this is a guy who knows he's going to get a lot of targets.

Starting point is 00:12:27 Because PS2, it's not going to get a lot of targets in practice, though Bo Nix isn't afraid to test him. And obviously, we saw that a few times during Friday's practice where Bo was trying to fit a pass into Cortland Sutton during one of the team periods. PS2 broke it up, tried in 7-on-7. PS2 had a breakup. But then there was one of these plays. In Denver's second team period here, it was on the very very. very second play of that where Bo was trying to throw a fade route to Cortland Sutton, right? He got a nice little one-on-one look pre-snap and he wanted to take that shot because

Starting point is 00:12:57 Riley Moss was in coverage. Riley did such a great job because you know how Cortland is. Cortland's going to ride the vertical route, right? And then he's going to time his jump because he's got good size to him. Riley did a great job of getting in phase, staying on the hip, and then just timing when Cortland was jumping and just going up there and being patient, playing through the hands and he knocked the football away, clean, pass break. up right there was a nice play to see. I think just even a confidence thing to see for Riley because I feel like Riley is, I would say, analyze under this really unfair microscope. If he gives up a catch in front of him for four yards, people are like, oh, Riley Moss is getting

Starting point is 00:13:33 cooked because at the end of the day, a lot of people don't really know about the cornerback position. You live with the short completions given up. And at times, you're going to get some passes caught on you. And I would say that was the theme of today. As a corner, you're going to make plays, but you're also going to have plays made against you, unless you're PS2, because PS2 is a unicorn and Riley has the most impossible task right now in the NFL of trying to make everybody happy because of the amount of volume he's going to see. But on that very next play, the Broncos ran another play. Justin Sternad did a really good job of creating pressure, getting his hands up in running towards Bo Nix. Bo tried to throw it across his body to Pat

Starting point is 00:14:06 Bryant and Riley did a great job of breaking on it and almost coming up with an interception, fell incomplete to the ground. So once again, you see the playmaking ability there. You see him having sticky coverage, which is one thing you want. And then you run into the instance where Marvin got behind him on that one play. He did give up that play to Marvin. But that's the nature of the cornerback position. And Sarah, I think a lot of people forget, too. Remember what Sean Payton said last year?

Starting point is 00:14:30 Remember the touchdown that Marvin scored against the bills in the playoffs to win the game for Denver? He ran that double move. Remember Sean Payton said, we actually ran that in practice a couple weeks prior and he cooked Pat Sertan on that move. So Marvin is a guy that's not just like, he's not just cooking, you know, every Tom Dick and Harry. he's cooking PS2 from time to time because Marvin, I think, is more underrated than people

Starting point is 00:14:51 are going to give him credit for. But for Riley, the thing I love about him as a corner, and you have to have this mindset, he moves on to the next play. You know, if you give up a play, you've got to forget about it. You've got to go on and go make the next play. And I say Riley has done a great job of showcasing just that. Which we come to expect from him, right? Because obviously you're getting targeted 220 plus times over a two season period.

Starting point is 00:15:12 And what we know is that the Broncos are really trying to emphasize, hey, go make that interception, right? Not that you want Bo Nix getting picked off on the first day of practice where you're doing a lot more, you know, intense stuff. But certainly for Riley, I think that's an area that he can sort of, you know, make up for it with the fans that have those harsh opinions of him, right? Not that he has to do that. But I think if you're going to give up the big plays, people can live with that if you're creating takeaways at the same time, right? It's not necessarily feast or famine because Riley is also averaging, you know, I think he gives up barely over 50% of the targets into his coverage as well. So he does a really good job of making plays on the

Starting point is 00:15:51 ball, 19 past breakups tied for the NFL lead last season. But what we're all calling for, what we're all hoping is to turn a few more of those into interceptions. And that'll put a lot more zeros in his bank account, a few more bucks in his pocket too. So I bet you he's eager to make that happen as well. Who else really stood out? I know we've mentioned Pat Bryant's name a couple of times. It sounds like he continues to stack together. The receivers. I mean, that That's really exciting to me. Obviously, Bo Nix, like, he's standing out in a good way. I mean, shoot, like, if you were to draw it up early on, like, this is kind of what you want to hear from Broncos training camp.

Starting point is 00:16:29 Especially with the offense looking as good as they do early on, right? It's always been kind of this rarity that they get off to a hot start in training camp. And so far, they have gotten off to a little bit of a quicker start in this training camp. I feel like they've done a good job. I feel like the quarterbacks have done a really good job. Bo Nix is going to be the subject of Monday's episode of the show because there's just something about his game that I think has changed. One key trait that I've noticed so far through three practices that he's doing. We didn't see a lot of last year where there's anticipation, there's trust and there's disconfidence in his ability.

Starting point is 00:17:01 I can't wait to share it with Broncos country. But going through and looking at this, once again, I think Cortland Sutton's had himself a really good day. He had a 15 plus yard catch from Bow next to open up the first seven on seven period. Pat Bryant had a 15 plus yard catch from ball in the very next play. Low Jordan Humphrey continuing to stack days, had a nice deep crossing catch against Sam Fresh from Jared Stidham, not from Stidham, from Sam Ellinger. And then even on my digital notes,

Starting point is 00:17:26 I always put an emoji next to a big play for those that are watching the show and not listening, it helps me kind of categorize because there's so many different plays. When the Broncos run a team period, well, each quarterback gets four reps. So there's 12 plays per team period. And so you really have to go through and analyze which ones were the best ones.

Starting point is 00:17:43 Obviously, we've talked about Evan Ingram, Jared Stidham going deep to him, Sam Ellinger going deep to him. Those guys obviously in a competition, the quarterback two position. But I want to also highlight maybe this one play right here. We talk about linebackers. Granted, there are no pads here. But Jarrett Stidham had a quick throw inside today to Michael Bandy. And Bandy went to go make a move up field.

Starting point is 00:18:02 Corny Reed came and punched the football out and recovered it. It would have been a scoop and score in a real simulated game. So love to see that. I read Murdoch had one specific pressure. pressure on Sam Ellinger, where ultimately Sam ended up tucking it and running, but he would have been sacked. It would have been a downplay. There was one throw where I would say Ellinger threw it deep to Hakeem Butler down the right side. It was more off of the scramble drill, but he got sacked, but he still got the throw off even after the fact that there were defenders in his face.

Starting point is 00:18:30 So, I mean, nice to see that, but probably a sack in a real game. Brent Austin had a nice PBU the following play against Hakeem Butler to knock it away. And I'd just say going through and just taking a look at some of these notes, it seems like, and specifically this two-minute drill that Denver ran, you saw a lot of Jalen Waddle, Cortland Sutton, Troy Franklin, and Marvin Mims primarily on the field here in that rotation.

Starting point is 00:18:53 So maybe it is, and Sean Payton said it himself after practice, we don't look at 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, we just look at our wide receivers and we say like, you know, this is what we're doing with all of these guys. So I think we're starting to see a lot more of that too. They're not giving anything away when it comes.

Starting point is 00:19:09 the depth chart. I mean, he even mentioned when he was asked about competition at left guard and backup quarterback. He's like, yeah, there's competitions happening at all those spots, you know, quarterback,

Starting point is 00:19:20 tight end, guard, all that. So he's not wanting to give much away. He said the same thing, kind of about defensive end as well, right? So,

Starting point is 00:19:27 and it sounds to me like, Hey, Uazurike, Jordan Jackson, even kind of factoring into that. So we'll be able to kind of monitor that as we know the Broncos practice on Saturday, obviously,

Starting point is 00:19:38 and we'll get more information. as the pads come on. So lots, lots of competition yet to be had. It's one day of practice. So you don't want to make any mountains out of mole hills. But I think, Cody, to me, the things that I'm most excited about, just hearing it and reading about it and seeing your videos and your reports is number one, like I want to hear that Bo Nix looks good at practice. And he's done that. I mean, dating back mandatory mini camp, right? Number two, you want to hear that the new guy looks good. Jalen Waddle, like you invested so much. He was the only. pick up you made pretty much all offseason.

Starting point is 00:20:12 And man, it sounds to me like what, I mean, Sean Payton said walks on water. I know he was talking about his quickness and just the way that he moves. But shoot, I mean, enough good things get said about a guy. You might think he can walk on water for real. So I'm excited about those two things. And then just, you know, generally speaking, the playmakers coming through because the Broncos need those guys to step up in a big way.

Starting point is 00:20:35 Yeah. How about J.K. Dobbins press conference, too. I tell you what, JK. That was an all-time press conference moment. And obviously, Broncos country, if you're wondering what we're talking about, the Broncos, they uploaded it to their YouTube page. Make sure you go check it out. JK gave us one of the most insightful and just you get to see the personality that he has.

Starting point is 00:20:54 And you can see why, man, I would love this guy in my locker room. Like if I'm a coach, I want this guy here as a team here. You're like, man, I love this guy. He's hilarious. He's got a great personality. And you can just tell JK is a genuinely good human being as well. What was your quick takeaway on JK's Presser? He's got a one liner for all time, in my opinion, Cody, because he's vowed multiple

Starting point is 00:21:15 times now that he's going to stay healthy for all 17 games, right? He's like, hey, I'll buy you guys a drink if you need it or whatever. And so somebody, I think it was Andrew Mason asked him. So like, you know, somebody rolls up on you in a pile. Like you can't control that. Like what makes you so sure that you're going to be able to play all 17 games this year? And he's like, I prayed on it.

Starting point is 00:21:34 I think he needs to make a T-shirt out of that one. Cody that's so good I love it I love it no that was it was one of my favorite interviews I think you know when we've had a press conference just the personality wise you just it shines through with JK I mean you could tell this guy hey what Sean Payton said to as well like you you generally hear him before you see him and I think that's a very true year for JK but Broncos country Denver's going to have a practice on Saturday for back together weekend and you know after the fact your boys Sarah Bedinger myself we're going to come through and we're going to break down what we see from practice tomorrow and then the team is off on Sunday,

Starting point is 00:22:09 but we've really got to get into some meat and potatoes of what we've seen so far in Broncos camp. We'll have a recap of tomorrow's practice. And then Monday's episode of the show, we're going to talk about the one thing we're seeing from Bow Nix early on that we haven't seen so far in his first two seasons. And there's a lot of confidence behind him on it. We'll go through all that much more. You get that here.
