The Denver Broncos will be down one of their top three running backs in Sunday's game against the REMs,
but they're getting two key guys back at the right time.
You are locked on Broncos, your daily Denver Broncos podcast.

What's out, Broncos country? Cody Roar, Credential Broncos reporter here for another episode of the show.
Today we're going to talk about the Broncos being without rookie running back, Jonah Coleman,
and who steps up in his place.
Plus, with J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey set to play on Sunday,
will the Broncos approach to the run game change?
We'll go through that and we'll also analyze whether or not Marvin Mims will play here in Sunday's game
and what the Broncos plan at returner could be if he's not ready to go here on Sunday night football.
Today's episode of the show was brought to you by our friends over there at Kaushi for a limited time.

$25 Kowshi trade. What's next?
Let's talk about it.
Broncos country, I know everybody, including myself, we were excited to see a lot more of
Jonah Coleman going forward after last week's game against the Jaguars, where he kind of put the game
on ice late in the fourth quarter. And it came to the point where coming out of the game.
So, okay, the Broncos must find a way to get all three of these running backs touches on this
roster when everybody's healthy. Little that we know throughout the week, an ankle sprain would
pop up for Coleman stemming from Sunday's win against the Jaguars. Now, while he was present all week
long at practice. I saw him. He did not participate fully in terms of any team drills,
any individual drills. So even though he was in full pads all week long, he was observing everything
with his position-specific group. And so part of me is wondering here with Jonah Coleman and his
ankle sprain right now coming into this game. Maybe him being held out is more of a,
we don't want to re-aggravate it at this point. And I think maybe it's coming on the hills of some
good news with Denver getting J.K. Dobbins and R.J. Harvey healthy will talk about them.
I'm hearing a little bit, but for Jonah Coleman, the timing of this is a little bit of a blow, right?
Because we can play the what if game back and forth where, well, what if J.K. Dobbins wasn't able to go this week or RJ Harvey.
What if those two guys weren't ready? Maybe it would have been a week where Jonah Coleman might have played through it, right?
Or Denver could have just used Tyler Bade and Cody Schrader, not say that's going to be a solution that would help the Broncos right now if they were down all three of their top backs.
But for Jonah being out specifically, here's where I'll say the good news is Broncos country.
Him being out there, him being present for practice is the number one sign.
If he was out on the side field, which for us in the media, we're not allowed to report on that anymore.
We can't say if a player goes and does something off onto the side field,
but we can say whether or not they're present or not present.
Those are the new rules that we are kind of being put under there in terms of what the Broncos have outlined.
So I have to follow that, obviously, but for Jonah to be out there, spotted,
doing team stretch jogging during when the team is going through their stretching process.
And then after that, just observing, it tells me that he's closer to being back than he isn't, right?
If he was not out there, then that would obviously not be a good sign.
So the fact that he's out there just says, hey, considering that he's a rookie,
considering that Denver this position in general, they have been dealing with injuries to JK and to RJ already.
You don't want to reagravate something and potentially put him on the shelf for several weeks
or maybe even a short-term center and I are like you have to be very smart with that.
Just as the Broncos, I think we're being very smart last week with R.J. Harvey, who had the hamstring
injury. We saw him at practice. He was present all week long, but he ultimately did not play against Jacksonville.
So I imagine we'll see how things go. Jonah probably will be okay for next week's game against San Francisco.
If I had to make the assumption here today, I think he'll probably be good to go then.
And you just have to hope coming out of this upcoming game on Sunday night football against the Rams that the Broncos,
that the Broncos running back room with JK and with RJ can stay healthy.
You know, if there's no setbacks with those guys as they return back to action here,
and obviously, JK wasn't really on the shelf.
He just didn't play much after the third quarter of Sunday's game,
and he's had all week to deal with the cramps.
I've seen him in the locker room this week.
He's in great spirits.
He's ready to rock and roll.
Obviously, he was a full participant all week long.
We'll get to them here just a second.
But in light of Jonah Coleman now being out on Sunday night football,
you can expect that Tyler Bade will get the.
active status, right? Usually if the Broncos had all three of their backs healthy, more than likely,
Badee would be inactive. So Badee will be active probably for the second consecutive week in a row.
And he had a nice kick return last week to give the Broncos offense good field position.
He had a nice pass catch out of the backfield and made a great move inside to get extra yards to
pick up the first down. I really liked what I saw from Tyler Badee last week. And you have to
hope that the Broncos formula at running back, it doesn't change even though that Jonah Coleman is out of
this game here specifically, can the Broncos and Davis Webb still find a way to use three?
I think that's going to be an important key against this Los Angeles Rams defense,
specifically if you are Davis Webb. So yes, it's a big blow that Jonah Coleman will not be
playing here on Sunday. We hope to see him next Sunday when the team takes on the San Francisco
49ers, but it is next man up. And while the Broncos have dealt with injuries at the running back
position, J.K. Dobbins, R.J. Harvey are set to go. But what is the plan with them specifically
coming into Sunday? We'll take a look at that here on today.

J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey are good to go here for Sunday night football.
The Broncos must stick to the plan at running back here.
Broncos country, thanks so much for making us your first listen here
in the lockdown podcast network.
your team every day. Also the number one sports podcast network in the country. We got you covered
every single day all year long. We appreciate all you every dayers out there for making the show
exactly what it is. So let's get into it. The Broncos will have J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey ready to
rock and roll this Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. I think the bigger question, when it pertains
to these two guys specifically is what the plan looks like. Now, it seemed like in week one,
J.K. Dobbins, against the Chiefs, didn't have as many snaps. I think that we
were hoping for, right? 22 overall snaps for him in that specific game. RJ Harvey led the way with
28. And then you also had the discrepancy where RJ kind of looked like a little bit more of the
explosive runner early on in that game in Kansas City. Then JK comes out. He has a big run in the
second half. Week two, JK comes out. He has a couple of big runs before he ultimately dealt with
cramps. And he had that one specific drive where Bowknicks connected with Jaylen Waddle downfield.
And they gave JK the ball three straight times. And so he's gassed. He's tired. And then the Broncos
ultimately didn't punch it in.
That's not JK's fault.
That's not Bo's fault.
That's a little bit of the offensive line
having a rough sequence,
according to what Davis Webb and Sean Payton had made mention of,
obviously, going back to the week two game here.
But now with these guys back,
you can't come into this game against the Rams.
We've talked about it all week long in our buildup.
You can't just come out in this game and just say,
you know what?
Our running backs, they're banged up or they're coming off of injuries.
We've got to reduce the amount of times that these guys carry the ball.
That can't be the formula here on Sunday night
because the Broncos don't come out.
to run the ball against the Rams,
they're going to have a hard time.
It's going to be hard to win a game like that
if they don't try to commit and try to get the run game going.
I understand a certain times personnel-wise,
depending on what the Rams do,
there's going to be times where the Rams are going to stuff the run,
but you have to stay patient with it.
And as Davis Webb continues his navigation early on in the season
as the new play caller here under Sean Payton,
it's just about getting that run game going.
Can he be different than his predecessor there in Sean Payton?
Sean has run the ball on the script.
I don't know if Davis Webb has that.
I don't know if anyone's captured that or not, something to pay attention to maybe on Sunday night football because the cameras will zoom in close on him.
But the plan has to be, I think, a split series here between R.J. Harvey and J.K. Dobbins.
And I think in this game in particular, even if Jonah Coleman is playing, this is going to have to be the game.
You get three running backs involved.
So Tyler Badee specifically.
And how does everything change too?
I even want to bring that up because R.J. Harvey and Jonah Coleman were the two kick returners against the Kent City Chiefs in week one,
Jonah Coleman and I believe Tyler Badegh were the kick returners in week two.
So now it's probably going to be Tyler Badee and R.J. Harvey.
I don't know how I feel about putting your running backs that have already been banged up as is, right?
Especially with RJ with the hamstring and he's coming off of it, going back there in returning kicks.
I understand it's part of the game now where running backs are primarily returning those kicks more so than a couple of the premier return guys out there in the league.
And I just don't think that putting your running backs back there, they take a shot.
Well, now all of a sudden you're down another back.
Devers got to be very careful with this process here going forward.
So I wonder if they will maybe take some precautions,
especially with RJ coming off the hamstring and them also being down Jonah right now.
Do they put somebody else back there with Tyler Badegh?
I think that is a question to maybe ask going into Sunday night football.
But the run game has to be the key.
If I had to maybe hypothesize an ideal split between all three of these running backs,
can you get J.K. Dobbins around 12 carries in this game.
R.J. Harvey, can you get him around eight?
Tyler Biday, can you get him around four potential carries?
Like if the Broncos truly want to run the football in this game,
it's going to have to be with three backs there on a committee approach.
And I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
But also, I think you have to play into the consideration that there needs to be maybe if there's a hot hand,
feed that hot hand.
Don't go away from it, right?
I think the Broncos run game offense is still trying to find its identity.
There were some bright spots last week.
They finished with 100 yards collectively as a team.
But against this Rams team, if you find yourself down,
and you can't run the football, it makes the Rams defense job so much easier.
And it's going to make it a lot harder for the Broncos to have that fourth quarter magic
that we're always seeing.
And the hope is that this team could be a four quarter team and not a fourth quarter team here
on Sunday, the bright lights against Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald and the Los Angeles Rams.
The planet running back will be crucial here if Denver's going to win on Sunday night football.
The running backs are going to be a major part of the game plan and they should be.
And if they're not, we have some questions to ask.
ask care going forward.
But with that said, Broncos country coming up next, the next guy that we have to wonder about,
will Marvin Mims play here on Sunday?
What do we see from him all week at practice?
And could he return this Sunday?
We'll dive deeper to that here on today's episode, Locked on Broncos.

Martin Mims practiced all week long, but will he play on Sunday night football as the Denver Broncos need a boost in the return department on special teams?
And what's going to be the case if he's unable to go?
We'll dive into all of that here.
So Broncos country, one of the things to watch here on Sunday night football, special teams, right, the hidden aspect or as Sean Payton likes to say, it's the area that has the hidden yards that ultimately determine the outcome of a game.
And I'd say from the Broncos from a kick coverage standpoint, guys like J.L. Skinner, Devin, Key, Tyson, Anderson, Andrews.
and have done a great job when Denver has to punt the football away or if they kick off to another
team. Their coverage does a great job of getting downfield, making tackles and getting stops
and eliminating the opportunities for the opposing team to have great starting field position.
Denver's been very consistent with that. But the one area of special teams so far,
they have not been consistent with so far. The season has been in the return department outside
of Tyler Badey's nice kick return. But we're talking about part return here specifically.
Week one against the Kansas City Chiefs, Marvin Mims was banged up,
and he had to come out of the game as he was dealing with a hip injury.
In that specific game, Chris Abrams-Drain fielded a punt in that game,
and he's kind of been the punt returner ever since.
And I don't think the ideal goal for the Broncos specifically is to say,
okay, Chris Abrams-drain, you've got to go out there and you've got to return punts,
and we need you to make big plays in that department.
I think the number one coaching point from Darren Rizzy and maybe even Sean
Peyton in that regard to a guy like Abrams-Drain,
who's been filling in for Marvin Mims,
specifically at punt returner, just catch the ball.
John Payton has been on the record multiple times saying Chris Abrams,
drain, he believes has the best overall hands on the team.
So the number one thing that you want is go out there and return the ball.
If you have enough green grass in front of you, return it, secure the nose of the football,
and then try to make a play, try to get positive yards.
But for the most part, it's been fair catch it, field it.
That is going to be something the Broncos, you know, have to maintain here going to this week,
if it's not Marvin Mims back there.
Now, I'll say this.
I've seen Marvin all week long here at practice.
He was a limited participant here throughout the week,
which gives him an official questionable status for Sunday night football.
So to me, I imagine before the game, he will probably go out there, work out,
run around, test it out under the eye of Bo Lowry and the Broncos training staff to see
if he's able to give it a go.
And if he can, that is a huge boost.
Not only for what the Broncos can maybe do offensively,
or maybe there's even this dynamic here against the Rams if Marvin does.
does play where he doesn't have as many snaps or plays at wide receiver, right?
Because he's coming off the foot injury.
Maybe it's specifically, can you return for us right now in this game as he builds up?
And maybe the expectation will be he'll be fully ready to rock and roll next week against
the San Francisco 49ers, not to look too far ahead, but that's very much a possibility.
There's a chance that Marvin is unable to go in this game here specifically.
And Denver is saying we want to get him back at San Francisco on the road.
but the one thing I think the Broncos can't do folks and one thing that Chris Abrams drain can't do right the bright lights of Sunday night football look the sun's not going to be in his eyes this week the way that was last week against Jacksonville but the one thing that you can't do especially with the Rams is make the mistake of let's say you muff a punt inside the 10 yard line or even inside the 20 right from the 20 to the 10 if you muff that punt in LA recovers it it gives the Rams and Matthew Stafford the easiest field advantage to work with so this is going to
to be very important. If I'm the Rams, I'm sure they're looking at, hey, that's not Marvin
Mims. If we can get this guy who doesn't have a lot of return experience, if we could get him
to make a mistake, we could capitalize on the road. I almost assure you that the Rams Special
Teams Department, they are probably looking at that, right? So there was a lot of pressure on Chris
Abrams drain coming into this game. But I talked to Chris last week, even after the game against
Jacksonville briefly. And he said, you know, just the first couple of returns, you just got to get the
nerves out, right? Because the ball's spinning in the air. Time feels like it's standing still.
And you can't peek and see where the gunners are coming from. You just have to trust that the
jammers are putting those guys in a vice, as Darren Rizzy would say, and that you could just
field the ball cleanly and then live with whatever happens after that. That's going to be the number
on goal. Field the ball cleanly, even if you have to fair catch, a big thing to watch. Now,
if Marvin is able to play, it's a huge boost, not only to what you want to do offensively,
because I think the Broncos can do some really exciting stuff with Jaylen Waddle and with Marvin Mims together specifically.
And then because of Marvin's dynamic ability in the return department specifically.
And that might also answer our question that we had a little bit earlier in the show about,
okay, with Jonah Coleman out, he was the primary return guy alongside RJ Harvey week one,
Tyler Badee week two.
Well, now maybe you could put Marvin back there with Tyler Badegh.
That was the return group that Denver had last season, the regular season.
So it might help you answer that question there specifically and give you a little bit of boost here in the punt return game where Denver could use the advantage of maybe getting a return to the 35, maybe even past midfield or Marvin last year returned a punt for a touchdown.
Had a 70-yard return against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Marvin is a true weapon.
I think in this time that we have seen him out, no disrespect to any of the other guys returning punts.
But it's been very clear that there's nobody on this Broncos roster in the return department at punt return that can do what Marvin does.
of the maneuverability, the vision to see the field,
and the ability to flip field position the way that he did.
Tyler Bade did that obviously in the kick return game,
but returning a kick return is far different than returning a punt.
So hope is that Marvin will play here on Sunday.
He'll be a game time decision,
and we'll find out shortly as we get closer to kick off on Sunday night football.
