Starting point is 00:00:00 Broncos country, the news you've been waiting for, Davis Webb, is now the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos. You are locked on Broncos, your daily Denver Broncos podcast. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. After Sean Payton fired Joe Lombardi, the Denver Broncos, they have a brand new offensive coordinator as Davis Webb has been promoted to that position. We'll break it out here on today's breaking news episode, Lockdown Broncos, your daily Denver Broncos podcast. part of the Lockdown Podcast Network where you know it's your team every day. Plus it's the number one sports podcast network
Starting point is 00:00:39 out there in the country. Thanks to all you every dayers. Thanks for tuning in making us your first listen. However, you choose to do so here. This break in his episode, obviously Davis Webb being announced as the team's offensive coordinator, plus we'll go through the dilemma
Starting point is 00:00:52 whether or not he's going to be calling plays or not for Sean Payton and for Bo Nix as he prepares for his third season as the team's franchise quarterback. And Logan Kilgore getting promoted to Davis's old spot as quarterback coach. You'll get all that here on today's episode of the show. I'm Cody Roark, Credential Broncos reporter for Mal High Sports. Joined, is always by Sarah Bedinger, site expert on their predominantly orange.com.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Sarah, the news that Broncos country has been waiting for all offseason long, I feel like when you talk about a wish list of moves that Broncos country wanted to have happen, it was not losing Davis Webb. Now the Broncos, they get to keep him. It was announced officially today. He will be the offensive coordinator in 2026 under Sean Pays. Right. Very exciting news, like you mentioned at the beginning, kind of the news that everybody has been waiting for because we kind of assumed going into this off season that the Broncos coaching staff is going to get absolutely ravaged, right? And we saw early evidence of that with not only Davis getting interviews, but obviously Vance Joseph interviewing for a number of head coach openings, Jim Leonard interviewing for seemingly every defensive coordinator opening before ultimately taking that Buffalo job. But I think the one name that everybody kind of had circled as, you know, You know, with Vance, you know, you were potentially getting some draft pick compensation. So at least there was a little bit of, you know, sweet to the bitter of losing Vance Joseph,
Starting point is 00:02:11 which the Broncos did not ultimately. But losing Davis Webb meant losing potentially the most, you know, talented assistant coach on the offensive staff and somebody who was coveted by a lot of teams. And so Davis staying in Denver, it's huge, I think, for the buffer between Sean Payton and Bo Nix, as we've seen, you know, all these, this quote gate that's being talked about all, all throughout the offseason so far. And Davis has obviously just done a great job ever since he came over to the Broncos, whether he was working with Russell, whether he's working with Sean as the past game coordinator, all these different factors bringing this to maybe the biggest and most important
Starting point is 00:02:48 hiring for the Broncos this off season. No, 100%. It is. And look, I think if the Broncos were to lose Davis Webb, it would have been a massive loss for Sean Payton's offensive staff. And I think to your point of what you mentioned about the buffer between, Sean and Bo. I think everyone's still wondering, hey, is everything okay?
Starting point is 00:03:07 Davis Webb is like the good cop, right? Like when you have head coaching roles, Sean Payton will play the bad cop, but, you know, obviously the rumblings coming out of the building is that, you know, Sean and Bo have a marriage-like relationship. You know, it's like, hey, you're not always going to get along, but they do see eye to eye on so much, right? I think everything that we saw is now kind of gotten blown out of proportion
Starting point is 00:03:27 a little bit, but we'll see where things go here. I think Davis Webb staying, obviously, I think, simmers any coals that might have been on fire or heating up, so to speak. But I think the biggest question here, Sarah, that we're looking at is, will Davis Webb be calling place here for the Broncos in 2026? I find this to be the interesting thing that we do not yet know information on, but it was worth noting that last week, Ian Rapporteur had reported before Joe Brady took the Buffalo Bill's head coaching job. Sean Payton spoke with him on the phone. And there was a chance that maybe if Davis Webb ended up elsewhere as a head coach, that Joe Brady would maybe come over to
Starting point is 00:04:01 Denver to be the offensive coordinator and potentially call plays. I find that to be very interesting. So if that was the case for Joe Brady, why can't that be the case here for Davis Webb? And here's my number one thing that I'm going to say with that, Sarah. And I'm curious for your thoughts. If Davis Webb is staying in Denver, the inclination has to be that he's going to be calling plays, right? Because he had offers and other teams who were severely interested in his services as an offensive
Starting point is 00:04:29 coordinator where he could have gone and actually called plays. to me, this is where the toss-up is. I don't know, but it's like, would Davis stay if he's not actually calling plays? I think that's a really fair question, because ultimately, I don't believe that's the case. I don't believe he would stay if that wasn't at least part of the discussion, right? Because like you mentioned, he had multiple other offers for offensive coordinator jobs. He was in the finalists for the Las Vegas Raiders job. Now, ultimately, the Raiders decided to go with Clint Kubiak, which can't become official until after the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:04:59 but presumably, you know, that they're interested in Davis Webb, not only as their head football coach, but to come in and call plays for them. So whatever vision he's casting as a potential head coach, play caller, all these sorts of things, I think it's compelling to a lot of teams. And I think the Broncos made the right decision. If you can't have Joe Brady,
Starting point is 00:05:19 let's throw the bag at Davis Webb. Let's promote him. Let's offer him whatever it takes. The interesting factors in this, well, there are many, right? Sean Peyton could become the first head coach ever to win a Super Bowl with multiple NFL teams. Is he going to allow a first year play caller to ultimately keep that fate in his hands, right? I mean, if you're Davis Webb, the fate of the offense would be in your hands. You're calling the plays.
Starting point is 00:05:46 So therefore, Sean Payton's legacy that he wants to create. I firmly believe that, Cody, whether or not he will say it publicly, he wants to be that first coach to ever do that. And who wouldn't, right? obviously he wants to win a Super Bowl regardless, but to be the first to do something. So to put that pressure on a first year play caller, that's big time. But I do agree there has to be some sort of recruiting chip
Starting point is 00:06:07 other than just here's an extra zero on your paycheck or here's, you know, whatever you want in terms of, hey, what were you being offered by the Raiders? What are you being offered by Baltimore or whoever it may be? We'll match that than some. I think there's more to it than just dollars and cents. Yeah, obviously our good friend Luca had just put out recently that there's no language in Davis's OC deal specifically around play calling and staff.
Starting point is 00:06:33 But Don Peyton and the Broncos, they haven't made any decisions on that yet. But Luca, our good friend, does say that his Webb's duties will likely increase, which could mean eventually play calling here, which could mean that here. Here's where I can maybe envision this working as like a handoff period, right? For Sean, Sean Payton is always going to have override authority, I feel like, right? as the head coach, you have final say, I think you start to figure out and you bring Davis Webb along a little bit further.
Starting point is 00:07:01 Have him call some plays. Have him get more used to. Like he's only gotten one game, and it was in the preseason against Arizona, where he actually got to call the offensive game plan. Broncos' offense in that game, obviously they won 27 to 7. They had over 500 yards of offense in that game.
Starting point is 00:07:16 And it's like, all right, is that because of Davis? Maybe, maybe not. I just felt like in that game there was good flow, good rhythm. The run game complimented the passing offense relatively well in that game where Bo Nix didn't play. He was just Jared Stidham and Sam Ellinger. I think for Sean, you have to be able to do this, right? Like, Sean's going to have final say on maybe the design of the offense and the personnel, but let Davis call the plays. I feel like that has to be where things are at here. Because think about it this way, too. Regardless, Davis is going to be a very coveted candidate
Starting point is 00:07:48 and the hiring cycle next year for head coaches around the NFL. What is Sean? What is Davis's ultimate plan together? Only those two know and maybe they'll reveal it to us over time. But officially, Davis Webb, the offensive coordinator here for the Broncos and Sean Peyton, which I also think this is good for Bo from a continuity standpoint on maintaining coaches. But who's taken over Davis's job as quarterback's coach?
Starting point is 00:08:13 We'll get into Logan Kilgore and everything you need to know. Coming up next here on today's episode. Locked on Broncos. And remember, it's gametime.com. The Denver Broncos have promoted Davis Webb to the offensive coordinator role and it's next man of for Davis's old job. The quarterback's coach position is going to Logan Kilgore. Maybe he'll be the next candidate who's getting interviewed by a bunch of other teams to
Starting point is 00:11:38 be their next head coach in waiting. We'll see Broncos country. Don't want to put the card ahead of the horse too much. But another very interesting move to promote from within the Sean Peyton Tree, as we know, is growing wide across the NFL, but it's also growing deep roots in Denver. And we're going to talk about that on today's emergency bonus show here at Locked on Broncos. And if you haven't already done so, Broncos Country, you know what? You're going to get an ad-free episode of the show if you sign up for the Every Day or All Access Club. And I know for me,
Starting point is 00:12:05 that's one of the biggest things that I want when it comes to my podcast that I listen to is ad-free shows. I absolutely love it. We're just like you. We're all in this together, everybody. So check out the link in the show notes. And you can, that as well as multiple other huge benefits today. Cody, let's talk about the promotion from within Logan Kilgore. I think his most notable tie other than being part of the Broncos staff the last handful of years is to Arch Manning from once upon a time, right? So it's really a fascinating move by the Broncos to promote from within, but it definitely stands to reason that, you know, you want to promote from within when you feel like you have a good thing going, when your
Starting point is 00:12:44 offensive brain trust has young coaches who are good at what they do and you recognize that early on in the process. That's very much a theme for Sean Payton, isn't it? I mean, you could go back to a number of names. We've already talked about Joe Brady. Sean Peyton hired Joe Brady as a grad assistant at one point in time when he was still the head coach of the Saints. So he's got an eye for these young coaches who have that potential to grow within the staff. Yeah, well, let's talk about obviously what his previous role runs, what his current role currently he will be and what his future role with the team might be going forward. I think previously, though, as you mentioned, the tie to Archman and coached him in high school,
Starting point is 00:13:21 a Newman high school there in 2023 when Sean Payton got the job here in Denver, he came onto the staff as a senior as an offensive quality control assistant where primarily his responsibility was working with returners, assisting with returners and tight ends. But he has a vast knowledge of the offense, right? And when you talk about having these homegrown coaches that have been in your system, in your scheme. They've been in your building. They know what your culture is about.
Starting point is 00:13:46 That is so important in terms of maintaining continuity when you're coaching your players, right? Because if you bring it someone from the outside that has a different coaching style, but it doesn't necessarily mesh up with the message that's going on in the building, that's where you see guys being one and done, fired quickly or moved on from in relative short time.
Starting point is 00:14:04 But for Kilgore, I mean, he's done a tremendous job over the last handful of years. I know he's well thought of by Sean Payton. And I know by people inside the Broncos front office, because of his ability to coach and to develop players. He's a young guy. It's a very smart, young offensive mind. And now he's going to be responsible for working with Bo Nix and the
Starting point is 00:14:23 quarterbacks this season. And it also maintains level of continuity that I mentioned is so important for Bo Nix, who didn't have a lot of that in college. In the NFL so far, I would say Bose had more continuity than anywhere else in his entire football career, which is a good thing here. Now with Davis Webb moving up as the offensive coordinator, Kilgore is going to be responsible for the day-to-day stuff with the QBs. But obviously, you know that Kilgore and Davis and Sean,
Starting point is 00:14:51 that's going to become almost like a triangle when it comes to the quarterback brain trust here in the Mile High City. That's going to be important. But what does it mean for future roles here? This is where I think things get interesting. Davis Webb, as we know, especially if the Broncos offense has another good season this upcoming year, with him as the O.C. by title, he will get stronger consideration for head coaching gigs going into next year. And if he departs, well, now you have an in-house guy that's been right below him and Logan Kilgore who could get promoted to that offense coordinator title if and when Davis Webb eventually leaves. Which is another layer to this whole conversation, Cody, that I find to be very interesting in terms of other quarterbacks that he could have hitched his wagon to.
Starting point is 00:15:34 I mean, he had opportunities to go to Buffalo, to Baltimore. Obviously, a lot of big name quarterbacks around the NFL had offensive coordinator vacancies. whether or not they were calling plays. But Davis Webb, with the head coach opportunities in the future, awaiting him, had a chance to hitch his wagon to a lot of different guys, and he decided to go back to Bo Nix. So very interesting indeed, isn't it, when you think about all the outside perspectives on Bo Nix
Starting point is 00:15:59 and how much is at stake for somebody like Davis Webb, and even Logan Kilgore, for that matter, to take these promotions from the Denver Broncos and continue to work with him and continue to buy into that process. I find that to be a very interesting. interesting sort of addition to this. And I'd love to hear from Davis. And I'm excited that we're going to get to hear from him even more this coming year in
Starting point is 00:16:20 terms of talking to the coordinators weekly. With all due respect to Joe Lombardi and how long he's been around the game, Cody. I don't know that I listened to many of his press conferences from this past year. But for Davis, I think it'll be fascinating because I think he does have that sort of next step in the progression available to him. But I also wonder, could this be a multi-year type of thing? I mean, is he going to sit around and wait potentially if, you know, this Broncos head, I don't want to, again, I said it earlier. I don't want to put the cart too far ahead of the horse, but I'm just putting thoughts out there that might also be in the heads of others in Broncos country.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Is Davis potentially, you know, big brain 4D chess thinking? There's a possibility that he does such a great job at this position that if, you know, like we've mentioned on previous shows, if it would come down to it, I'm not saying I want it, but if it would come down to the Broncos. ownership having to choose between Sean Peyton and Bo Nix, considering kind of what's going on behind the scenes, maybe right now, would Davis Webb potentially be a head coach in waiting for the Broncos? I mean, that might seem like a super hot take to some, and I'm not trying to fearmonger or anything like that,
Starting point is 00:17:27 but thoughts go through our minds, don't they? And you know what? Sometimes you just got to talk it out. And I think this whole thing is fascinating. The Kilgore played for Sean Payton, at least for a brief bit in New Orleans back in 2014. So it's all, I think, good for the Broncos ultimately to have this continuity and build that brain trust. Yeah, you want to have that too.
Starting point is 00:17:50 I think once again, just keeping your message the same. I think, as you mentioned, having that buffer between Bo and Sean where at times you see the fairest Buellerness, you see them sometimes having what appears to be heated discussions. But once again, I just know they're both competitive. They both hate losing. And I think that's why you see that competitiveness come out. I like that dynamic between them. but I know that the recent end of the year press conference,
Starting point is 00:18:12 the miscommunication of information regarding Bowes injury, I know that has definitely kind of created a little bit of rumbling here amongst Broncos country. But Davis Webb is the extinguisher that keeps the coals nice and tamed at this point here. It's good to have that here for the Broncos going forward. But yes, Broncos country will have it covered every step of the way here. Locked on Broncos, had to get on and jump on for a breaking news episode. Davis Webb is now the offensive coordinator in Denver with the hope that he will
Starting point is 00:18:39 call plays. And if that changes, we'll obviously keep you updated every step the way here. Lockdown Broncos. With that said, Broncos country, we've got a brand new episode for you coming tomorrow as Sarah and I. We take a look at the Broncos defensive, unrestricted free agents. Make sure you stay locked in here, lockdown Broncos. We'll see you then.
