The Denver Broncos backup quarterback battle is under the microscope in Friday's preseason finale,
but it may have already been decided.
You are locked on Broncos.

What's up, Broncos country.
Cody Rourke, longtime Broncos beat reporter.
Join as always by Sarah Bedinger, longtime site expert, predominantly Orange.
We got a lot to talk about here as the Broncos get ready for their preseason finale.
Tonight against the Minnesota Vikings.
through why the quarterback two races under the microscope here in today's game, specifically,
offensive and defensive players that we have our eyes on against the Vikings tonight, and more
importantly, sharing some of our bold predictions for Denver's preseason finale.
Sarah, I'm excited to get into it.
Now, I obviously talked about this as well, the Broncos quarterback two battle between Jared
Stidham and Sam Ellinger under the microscope here tonight.
But this battle may have already been decided, Sarah, and I have a feeling it's going to trend
in a very similar direction of what we had seen at 2024 between Jared Stidham and Zach Wilson.
So very curious to dive into this tonight as Denver wraps up the preseason.
As we know, no bow nicks tonight.
Well, Cody, what you just said kind of makes me think that you're leaning towards the Broncos
potentially keeping three quarterbacks because that's what they did with Zach Wilson.
I can't say I'd be the biggest fan of that idea, although I sort of understand it from, you know,
the vantage point of maybe not being as confident in Jarrett Stidham, right?
I think that's where a lot of folks in Broncos country are right now is after what we saw in
the AFC championship game, the huge mistake in the first half that led to the Patriots only
touchdown of the game, as well as the way that Jarrett played against Green Bay.
Now, got to count in the fact that he played pretty well against Atlanta.
I mean, we were saying like, hey, he looked good in this game, pushing the ball down field,
spreading it around to different receivers, but you can't also deny that he didn't really play
very well against New England or against Green Bay.
And so I think that the leash has to be shorter on Jarrett Stidham this season.
And if that's the case, then maybe what the Broncos would be saying by potentially keeping three
quarterbacks is that that is what their perception of the QB2 situation is as well,
is that, hey, we can't, we have to have another option at the position.
If Jarrett is called upon and doesn't play well enough, we have to be able to turn to the third guy.
If you read the tea leaves too,
especially with some of the interviews that like Sam
Ellinger has done this offseason
and a few beat reporters,
you know,
at Broncos practice that we've been talking.
And kind of our general conversation
following Wednesday's practice was,
you know,
this has a very similar feel to that 2024 year, right?
Where, hey, Bo Nix not playing in that preseason game
because he was announced the starter.
Denver already knew he was the guy.
The Broncos feel very comfortable about what they've seen from
Bo Nix this off season.
And obviously in the one preseason game to say,
we don't want to play him in this game against Minnesota.
Our focus is on Monday night football where I think Jared Stidham and Parker Gabriel, you know,
reported this initially following Wednesday's practice.
The expectation is that Jared Stidham will get the start for the Broncos here tonight.
And then we should expect to see a lot of Sam Ellinger.
So very similar to 2024 where what was it?
I think Stidham had one or two series total in that game.
And then it was Zach Wilson playing the rest of the game against the Arizona Cardinals.
That could very well be what we see tonight with Sam Ellinger.
And if it goes out that way, Sarah, then that tells me that they're probably going to be looking at keeping three quarterbacks on their 53.
And here's why I say that, too, because I think I can't remember who exactly Ellinger did an interview with.
But he said, you know, the conversations we've had about, you know, my role or everything else, like we feel like we're in a pretty good spot where things are going to work out.
So it's like, wait, what does that mean?
Well, to me, that tells me that three quarterbacks on the table.
And Sean Payton even said after Wednesday's practice, when asked whether or not he would consider keeping three, he said that's one of the eight questions.
that we have.
If you look at our roster and the eight questions that we feel like we have to answer before
the deadline, the cut down is that's one of those questions that they have.
I feel like they're going to lean towards keeping those three guys.
Well, and when we looked at our 53 men roster predictions, right,
we made mention that there are a handful of veterans on this roster that we had making
our 53 that could be, you know, shuffle up candidates from the practice squad, right?
That would be like fullback, Adam Prentice, obviously wide receiver, little Jordan Humphrey.
And now we know with Taylor Rap potentially coming back later, he may be one of those guys already who's been cut from the current roster and could be back on the practice squad, as you alluded to kind of right after he was signed.
So you have those types of areas of flexibility on your roster right now.
And we also don't know who could open up this season on short term injured reserve for the Broncos.
So you also have the flexibility of, you know, those guys who could go on short-term IR, players who could shuffle up and down off the practice squad.
So maybe early on the Broncos are thinking to themselves, we can keep, we can afford to keep three quarterbacks on this team, still get our priority guys back on the practice squad and kind of just see what happens over the course of the regular season, right?
You don't want to have to turn to the backup quarterback anyway.
But what we saw last year from the Broncos is that's a very,
important position to feel confident in because I don't know that they would feel confident if
Beau had some sort of injury come up this season.
Cody and had to miss any time at all because of what we saw in the AFC championship game
where your backup quarterback who's the longest tenured player at that position on the roster
who knows the offense really well, very familiar with the coaching staff, very familiar with
his teammates.
It's thrust into a tough situation, but still you've got to step up when your number is
called.
That's your job.
You're the backup quarterback.
You're getting reps at practice.
You got all the first team reps the week leading up to the game.
Yes, it's a high pressure situation.
Yes, it's unfair to maybe expect him to play at the level of Bow Nix.
But certainly you expect your backup quarterback to be able to come in and keep the ship afloat,
not sink the ship with bad plays.
And that's what unfortunately, Jarrett did in that AFC championship game.
He set up the Patriots only touchdown of the game.
And that's just unfortunate.
And so the Broncos have to know with confidence that they can turn to their backup quarterback in a time of need, whether it's in the middle of a game, whether it's for a stretch of games, whether it's for one game, whether it's for a playoff game.
They need to know that they can be comfortable with that player.
And I just don't feel like keeping three quarterbacks indicates that they're comfortable with Jared Stidham.
Yeah, I mean, I think there's some validity to those perceptions here, right?
And maybe the other side of it, like the dichotomy of it where I'm looking at is like,
is the thought process here for Denver is they think Jared Stidham can operate the offense if there's a run game, right?
If you have to, like, what do we see Bo Nix do last year?
The Broncos had no run game, but Bo had to still do a lot.
Bo could do a lot despite the fact.
I don't think Jarrett can do as much without a run game.
And I think maybe the Broncos confidence is that we believe the run game is going to get going this year.
We believe it's going to be a very pivotal part of our success.
And if that's the case, right, then okay, I can understand maybe them sticking with Stidom.
I'll say this too.
Like, you know, let's say I feel like Stidham is going to be QB2 no matter what.
I feel like that's already been decided based on the amount of reps that we've seen,
especially in the preseason, what we've seen so far throughout practice.
I know it's not the popular decision or the pick in the eyes of Broncos country,
but at this time I'm also wondering who's the better option out there.
Who could come in from the outside that doesn't know this very complex system.
And, you know, let's say you have to step in early.
Can they do it?
I mean, we have no idea who that is.
And of course, there's pressure on the coaching staff.
If that were the scenario, they would get that guy to where he needs to be.
But they're very much in-house.
Davis, Ellinger, Stidham.
They're all on the same page here.
I mean, it's almost like a QB collective with these guys and with Bo Nix.
So I don't think the room is going to change.
But I agree.
I think you can make better arguments for going with two quarterbacks on your 53.
One of these guys being on the practice squad, that's my perspective on it.
But we'll see how the Broncos feel ultimately.
4 o'clock p.m. mount time is when they must be complied.
from 90 to 53 players.
We'll have you covered here on lockdown Broncos once we know what the 53 men roster
officially is here.
But Broncos country coming up next.
We're going to preview a little bit more of tonight's game.
Sarah and I are going to go through and give you some of our offensive and defensive
players that we've got our eyes on specifically here in tonight's game.

Players to watch in tonight's Broncos preseason finale against the Minnesota Vikings,
and I'm starting the bidding with wide receiver Troy Franklin.
Cody,
I'm excited to see, obviously, the way the Broncos finish out the preseason.
I'm going to be fascinated to find out which starters, if any, play in this game.
We know that Bo Nix is not likely to play, according to Sean Payton,
which we don't expect him to play.
Jared Sidham, as was reported, like you mentioned earlier,
supposed to start this game.
So we should still see a healthy dose, though, of, I think, some notable depth players in this game.
And obviously, roster hopefuls, practice squad hopefuls.
But I'm starting off with Troy Franklin because I felt like he played a lot deeper into that game against Green Bay than I was expecting.
Now, I don't know that that necessarily means anything.
We saw in Sean Payton's first year with the Broncos, remember like Frank Clark and Randy Gregory were playing into the fourth quarter of preseason
games and that is a cause for some like, okay, put an asterisk next to that guy's name because
he's in the doghouse. I didn't get that vibe from Troy Franklin playing deeper into this game,
but I still found it interesting. The guy who was second on the team in targets last year was playing
rather long into a preseason game. You figure he's proven himself. So he's one of those guys for me
that I'm circling here. I want to see Troy come out early on in this game and make a few big plays.
Yeah, I imagine he'll probably, if Cortland doesn't
play. Obviously, I don't think Jaylen's going to play. If those guys don't play, I think you're going to
see Pat Bryant, Troy Franklin, and Low Jordan Humphley, those are going to be your top three guys at
wide receiver. I don't think Marvin is going to play in this game, even though he's been back
at practice all week. I think very much the guys that, and here's the tricky part about it,
Sarah, right? Like in the preseason, like it wouldn't shock me tonight if all those guys come out
dressed in pads and a helmet for pregame warmups and just going through the normal pregame
routine, but don't play. Maybe they go back in and change out in the street clothes. I think
I'm going to pay very close attention tonight with my binoculars.
I'm going to be scanning saying, okay, who's dressed?
Who's not?
Because who's not dressed?
Roster lock.
And I'm going to be looking for those guys that maybe nobody's thinking about.
Like if Jalil McLaughlin comes out and is not dressed tonight,
well, then maybe Jalil is safe here on this roster.
I mean, it was to the point last year, LeBronco was in a very similar situation, right?
Where Jalil, his wife just had a baby.
Sean Pace said, no, go be a father, take care of that.
Like, your spot is essentially safe.
Like you don't have to.
he didn't have to go out there and play in that preseason finale against New Orleans.
So I'm going to be looking at that.
I think wide receiver is very interesting.
Like, you know, to me, if I have to take a page out of a wide receiver book,
I'm going to keep my eyes on little Jordan Humphrey, who I feel like has made a very
strong case for himself to make the 53-man roster if Denver does carry six guys.
But it is worth monitoring here.
Also, Cameron Ross, I think I feel like every week I've said Cameron Ross's name here
as a player to watch.
I want to, he's been catching a lot of passes in practice from various quarterbacks.
he's been used quite a bit.
We know what he can do in the return game.
And it's also interesting too because Sean Payton was even asked about, you know,
it's just in the preseason.
You hear it all the time.
Is it more so hype or is it overblown that teams try to hide specific guys or showcase them?
He says, no, I think it's very real in a lot of situations.
And so for a guy like Cameron Ross, they may be trying to hide him a little bit in terms of,
hey, we don't want you to bust off a really, really big kick return because we want to get you
to the practice squad so we can have you as an option.
That might be that.
But I'm going to watch him tonight.
I'm seeing this game.
I think we're going to watch the run game because Davis Webb came out and said,
you know, we're going to run the ball a lot better this week against Minnesota.
And they said that was going to be a little bit more of a bigger emphasis for them was to run the football.
So that's kind of where I'm at.
Where are you out on the defensive side of the ball?
Because we're going to see a lot of guys getting some run.
And there's going to be a handful of players who probably play a lot more in this game than they did collectively in the first two preseason games.
Well, I think you start by circling the line.
backers, right? The two guys, whoever's going to be playing behind Singleton and Sternad this season,
it should start off with Corrine, Reid and Red Murdoch out there. I want to see those two guys playing
extremely well, Cody. I want to see those guys flying around, making hits behind the line of scrimmage,
making plays in coverage, doing their thing as blitzers. I want to see it all from those guys,
because it was just frankly not good enough against Green Bay for anybody really on that defensive
side. The Packers kind of just had their way throughout the course of that game. And yes,
we know it doesn't matter. It's the preseason. But at the same time, you still want to see your depth guys come through and you'd rather dominate a preseason game than get dominated in a preseason game, certainly. So I think that those two guys for me will be the ones that we circle. And then I think just any rookies, right? Tyler Owen, you had him on the defensive front. I want to see York at the second level when he comes in, get an opportunity. Miles Scott could have had an interception against Green Bay. When I watched that game back, Cody, I think, man, I'd love to see him make a play on the ball. But, you know,
just the rookies for this team offensively and defensively,
certainly your top pick.
I want to see a splash from the top pick in this year's draft.
I know that's an unfair baby label to put on him because he's a third rounder,
but still, your top pick's got to go out there and prove why he was the team's,
you know, biggest priority, I suppose, when they were finally on the clock.
I felt like last week he actually played better than anybody else in the rotational second
and third team unit D-line.
So for me, like defensively, my eyes are going to be on Savian Jones.
I think this is a make or break game for Sabian, just from my perspective,
and what we've seen in practice, like early on in training camp,
there were some flashes from Saviore.
I'm like, okay, man, like the Broncos, I mean, you've got Malcolm Roj and Yomahua Zareka,
you got Onyatum, you got Sabian Jones, like the Broncos, they're A-O-K.
And I still think they're A-O-K.
But since then, I think Jordan Jackson has kind of overtaken Savian a little bit.
We haven't necessarily seen as much in these games from him specifically.
So I feel like this is going to be a very important game for him because I think,
And on my 53 and several other guys, I know Mace and I were talking,
I know Jeff Legold and I were talking.
We all have Savian being the surprise cut here.
So hopefully we're wrong because, like, there was some excitement around him last year.
Like, hey, can we see this guy a little bit more?
You know, he got in some regular season reps at the end,
like that last game against the Chargers.
He recovered a Nick Benito strip sack.
And it's like, all right, hey, there you go.
Maybe that's a player right there that just gives a young guy confidence.
So I don't know what's necessarily.
happened, but other guys have kind of overtaken him.
So he's going to meet my player to watch here as we get into tonight's game against the Vikings.
Is there anyone that's maybe obscure, right, that you maybe have your eye on a little bit,
that maybe nobody is talking about too much?
Well, we kind of mentioned earlier in the week.
We're watching this new Ron Stone off the edge because there was some intrigue when he was
signed and Sean Payton's kind of dishing on coaching his dad who was an offensive lineman.
And so I think there's certainly something to that when you bring.
in a guy like that who impressed
Vance Joseph in his first practice with the team
earlier in the week. He's going to get
a lot of reps. You go out there, earn
yourself a practice squad spot with very
little time on task and very
little time to digest the defense.
Hey, can you get after the quarterback when that
ball is snapped? Can you show your
traits in a preseason game? Can you just go
whip somebody one on one
and prove to the team like
you deserve to stick around? So
he's one of those guys that I'll be looking for.
Colby Katzis, I think, is it.
and maybe not so obscure because we kind of all dive deep into the names here,
you know, when it gets to this point of the preseason.
But Colby Catsis is one.
And so I'm really intrigued by anybody that could make themselves just separate a little bit in a game like this,
where your talent gets an opportunity to really shine and your execution.
Are you going to make mistakes or are you going to make plays?
So I think anybody out there on this roster that's going to be playing deep into the game
and that has a chance to even win a practice squad spot is intriguing to me.
I'm going to go with Foster Sorrell.
The Broncos new signing at offensive tackle, a veteran player.
Obviously, he spent the last four seasons with the Chargers.
Last year, he played 43% of their offensive snaps,
which I think was like 177 total offensive snaps for him.
Very interesting, right?
Veteran player could be a practice squad guy for it.
I'm not saying, I'm watching him because he's going to make the 53,
but no, like I think the Broncos, they want to figure out,
like, can this veteran guy who's got experience already?
Can this guy be a practice?
squad guy that could help us in the event of something versus are we pleased with some of our
undrafted rookie fridge and tackles this year compared to what we're at maybe last year.
Frank Crum dealing with an injury did not practice all week.
We didn't even see him.
So factoring all that into the equation, Sorrell could be one of those guys that if he
impresses in the small sample size he's going to get tonight, could he get a practice squad
spot when they have to formulate that on Monday of this upcoming week?
So I think that's something to keep an eye on here, Broncos Country.
Coming up next, we're going to have some fun, Broncos Country.
Sarah and I, we are going to share maybe some of our bold predictions,
offense, defense, special teams, you name,
but we want you to join along and play along with us here on today's episode,

Matt Derry here from the Lockdown Lions podcast.
You know, life insurance is one of those things.
You don't really think about until you have a reason to.
For me, it really hit home when my father passed away over 20 years ago.
You started thinking less about yourself and more about the people who depend on you,
making sure they're taking care of no matter what.
That's why I like ethos.
They make getting life insurance simple.

Let's have a little fun here.
Broncos Country.
Share with us your bold predictions for tonight's preseason finale.
Preseason's meant to be fun.
So we're going to have a lot fun with it.
We're not going to go crazy, crazy and say the most outlandish things.
But maybe let's think beyond just the scope of what we see common between the whistles
and between first and second down.
Let's go bold here.
Let's go through some bold predictions.
Sarah, who's any player, any offense,
you can start offense, defense,
you can make a bold take on special teams.
Where are you going for tonight's game
against the Minnesota Vi?
Because I imagine we'll probably see a lot of J.J. McCarthy
in this game here tonight.
Maybe a future Broncos backup, J.J. McCarthy.
Cody, we know Sean Dean likes those orphan dogs
at the QB position.
But no, what about, okay,
here's what I was thinking about for this.
What about, do you think he's going to play enough in this game for Sam Ellinger to get three total Tud's, Tuggalicious's, if you will?
Maybe three total TDs for Sam Ellinger is my first bold prediction for this game.
Cody, this is bad offense in the second preseason game against Green Bay.
I think these guys are going to be motivated to sort of run up the score a little bit, if possible.
And I'm not, nothing against the Vikings defense.
we're manifesting positivity here for the Broncos.
This is what bold predictions is all about.
I'm going to say three total days for Sam Ellinger in this game.
Okay.
I like that.
I think it's possible in a game like this.
I'm trying to remember if you can look it up while I'm going through who I'm going to pick,
what was Zach Wilson's stat line?
How many touchdowns did he account for in that 2024 preseason finale against the Arizona
criminals?
That'll be interesting here.
Okay, I like that.
I think that's a good one.
My offensive bold prediction here, I am going to say that we are going to see Cameron Ross,
I'm with at least 55 yards receiving in this game.
Hasn't seen too many targets in the preseason so far,
but I think he's going to have 55 total yards,
but I think he's going to have a 25 plus yard reception in this game.
I'm going bold with that one, right?
I think it's realistic, but not too crazy to think about.
Yeah, I know.
I like that one a lot, Cody.
and I just looked it up here.
Maybe this is fate.
I have no idea.
Maybe I'm on to something.
Zach Wilson was 16 of 25 passing in that particular game,
251 yards, two passing touchdowns, no interceptions.
And he also added two rushing attempts for 22 yards and a touchdown.
So he had three total touchdowns in that preseason finale against a car.
Alrighty.
Maybe lightning will strike twice here in the same place.
I'm still calling for that.
Return touchdown I ordered last week, Cody.
I want to see.
I do.
I know that you said maybe they hide the guy and say, hey, don't take it to the house.
Like Kobe Katzis got knocked out of bounds by a kicker last week.
Like, okay, you know, like, that's just the week he does it?
Maybe this is the week that he does it, right?
Because you've already talked publicly about how much those guys have added to your depth.
Darren Rizzy kind of let the cat out of the bag there.
So maybe somebody takes one back for a TD this week.
And I'm just like, hey, I'm still waiting for my order over.
here of that return touchdown.
Let's go ahead and get one of those this week.
All right, my special team's bold prediction is going to be one of the
essence in which Jeremy Crosha punts the football to a return guy.
A returner is going to muff the punt inside the 20 yard line for the Vikings here tonight
because of Jeremy Croshaw and his angle in which he spins the football.
I think that'll be something.
So Jeremy Croshaw, booting the heck out of the football, leads to a muff punt by a
Vikings returner inside the 20.
I'm spending the Nostradamus cycle in my head right now.
That's where I'm going on special teams.
All right, let's go to the defensive side of the ball here.
I feel like so many guys are going to play tonight.
So it might be a little bit harder to determine.
But where are you going?
What about at least one forced fumble from Red Murdoch?
I mean, based on his college career, that would be nice, right?
He had 17 in college.
We've been talking about it.
He punched one loose during training camp.
I think you'll get one.
you know, this game against the Vikings.
Go pop one loose out there at least, at least one, right?
I mean, he kind of owes us.
That was the whole headline all off season, right?
So Red Murdoch going to go get himself a force fumble at least one in this game.
Okay.
Gosh, I'm trying to think if he's going to play a lot in this game, Q Robinson.
If Q.
If Q does play a decent amount,
I'm going to say that Q Robinson comes up with one and a half sacks and a force fumble.
That's going to be my defense.
defensive pole predictions.
So I like that.
That's where we're leaning.
What about, I mean, we talked about Stone as a player to watch.
I mean, you think he's going to get to the QB?
I mean, are we making much out of the new guy?
I just, I don't know, somebody's got to do something in the past for us.
Once again, last week was like multiple strip sacks.
And then, you know, Tyrod Taylor and Kyle McCord are back there knitting sweaters.
So we don't want that this week.
Those guys got to figure it out and get to the QB against the Vikings.
Yeah, Grandma got a nice little sweater for Christmas between those guys last week in the preseason.
So you can't let J.J. McCarthy.
And I don't know.
I can't even remember at top my head who the other guys are right now for them.
We got Wents and Browser.
Oh, my goodness.
Wentz is still around?
He might be taking Jay's job, the backup job.
I believe so.
I mean, I believe so.
JJ, this could be an audition for the Vikings, though, to potentially trade away J.J. McCarthy.
maybe the Broncos come in and take that value by saying,
nah, not today.
We're going to make you look really bad.
So that's another bull prediction.
The Broncos make JJ McCarthy look so bad that he's untradable to another team.
So there we go.
Well, that's our bold predictions here from today on lockdown.
Broncos, Broncos country kickoff tonight as Denver wraps up their NFL preseason.
Sarah and myself will have you covered with a bonus episode, a post game show after the game at some point,
after I'm done with open locker room.
We're going to come through and get that up here for all of you guys here to react to the game.
what we saw. And then you'll get the squad show a little bit later on as well.
So a lot of stuff going on here with your Denver Broncos.
Drop us your bold predictions and players that you have your eye on here in tonight's game.
We'll see you later for the postgame show.
