Tony, man, I am excited.
I thought we were going to be talking a lot sooner, man.
I really did.
After late last season, I thought, man, this has got to be like,
okay, the Broncos are going to get another shot at the Jaguars in the playoffs.
And it's going to be a big storyline.
And unfortunately, that didn't end up happening.
We didn't get a chance to chat.
It's been a while since then that you and I have been able to chat.
But I think, honestly, the same sort of fear in Broncos country is still there that this
Jaguars team, what we saw from them against Cleveland in week one, man, they look,
they look ready to go back after that Super Bowl title this year.
The Broncos on the opposite end of things do not.
And that's kind of where I begin the biggest storylines, I think, for this game.
This is obviously a rematch.
This is a potential future playoff matchup, although after week one, it doesn't.
doesn't necessarily look like that from the Broncos side of things,
but they have a chance to fight back in this game.
I'm just excited that we get a chance to do this again, man.
It's always great to chat Broncos and Jaguars with you.
Yeah, man, you too, man.
And I know a lot of Jaguar fans are coming out there.
The last time this game was played, I was in Aruba.
I had people calling me for tickets.
So I was like, hey, man, you know, anyway, I was a broker until I got tired of doing it,
man, because I heard that them for ticket is very, very hard to get.
And I think it's a fun trip for our fans.
and hopefully it'll be a fun trip on the way home too.
Yeah, 100%.
I mean, and remember last game,
the last time these two teams played,
there was this whole discussion about the small market stuff
and Sean Payton, you know,
talking out of both ends of his mouth and, you know,
really that the Jaguars embraced that.
And they took it to the Broncos in that.
I mean, that was,
the Broncos haven't been blown out a ton over the last two years.
But that was one of those games where you just thought,
like, man, you just got to,
you got to take your L,
you got to take the social media.
media razzing, all of it.
What do you see as the biggest storyline going into this game from the Jaguars perspective?
Before I tell you what I think that is, Peyton made a mistake.
He misjudged what saying that would do, not only to the city, but to the players that
adopt the mindset of the city.
It's like if I was overweight my whole life and you call me fat, I'm like, okay, I know that,
but I'll come back with a joke or two.
Like, you throw that back.
That's nothing to people, the Jaguars have been here in that space.
ball market thing forever. And that's why it was extra motivation for our fans. But this week,
this biggest surprise to me coming out of week one, I wasn't surprised that the Jaguars are more
physical because that's what they aimed to be. They were a pretty physical team on defense last
year. They added some more physicality on offense and had two rookie starters, by the way,
at tight end and at left guard. I was surprised that the Broncos weren't physical. In fact,
it's like, it wasn't even like, okay, this wasn't their most physical day.
No, they look like they were not capable of being physical against the team in Kansas City,
at least for the last year and a half, has sort of been a finesse team.
And I know they went and got Kenneth Walker, and I know they've been addressing their offensive line.
But they're very young in the front seven at certain spots on defense.
They're trying to supplement some old players.
The younger on defense, I really did not expect Eric B. Enemy's presence to show up with that wide of a gap with the Broncos.
because I consider the Broncos to be a very physical team as well.
Well, that was not just the biggest surprise.
It was also the biggest disappointment from our vantage point, right?
I mean, you want to emphasize the run,
especially after the second half of last season where their Broncos didn't have a running game.
I mean, it's non-existent.
You got to see one of their better run performances when they played against Jacksonville,
RJ Harvey, I remember had a good game that week.
But the second half of the season, those were few and far between.
And so coming into this year, you figured if nothing else with a full stable of backs with a fully healthy offensive line that's bringing back all five guys for the 18th straight season.
You know, like these guys are going to go out there and do what they should be doing, which is bullying the Kansas City Chiefs.
But it wasn't that.
And you're right.
I mean, the Broncos were the finesse team.
And I pointed out even a specific instance in that game against Kansas City where you kind of knew that this wasn't their mentality.
they intercepted Patrick Mahomes,
Brandon Jones.
He took it down to the five yard line.
It's first in five.
And instead of pounding it,
instead of just saying,
hey,
we are going to beat you up front right now.
They pitch it out to RJ Harvey,
a little toss play.
I'm not saying you can't do the toss plays.
But man,
go punch somebody in the mouth.
That's what we wanted to see the Broncos do,
but they laid flat.
And that's really my focus,
the biggest storyline this week.
Are they going to lay flat against the Jaguars?
Are they going to keep taking punches
or are they going to punch back?
And is Jacksonville just going to happen to be the team that's kind of getting in the way of this team getting back on track?
The Broncos are slow starters notoriously under Sean Payton.
Sean Payton himself is notoriously a slow starter.
September, not his best month of the year.
But you want to see, and they've emphasized this, starting faster, starting better.
So will they lay down and just keep taking it this week?
And will they start to believe, like, man, maybe we're not a physical team.
Man, maybe we are overrated.
Maybe we don't belong in these conversations.
or are they going to actually punch back?
I think they're going to punch back.
I anticipate they're going to punch back.
And while I haven't heard anyone on the Jaguar staff say this,
this is just my read on the situation.
If I know Liam Cohen and I know Anthony Campanile,
I'm telling you what they're telling them.
They're telling them, don't pay attention to what you saw Monday.
That team had the home field advantage in the playoffs.
And for Jacksonville, the mantra has been this offseason.
anybody anywhere anytime.
When you say that, that doesn't mean that you're just looking up at Goliath.
You're saying that to David, too.
So it doesn't matter who your opponent is for you to be the team that you want to be
and to have everything that you have been planning on and working on so hard.
The only way it's going to come true, and it's my favorite phrase, is demonstrated performance.
And this is another chance for you to go out there.
Don't be the elixir.
Don't be the antibiotic that heals, whatever,
has going on with their early season stuff.
The bottom line is football comes down to blocking, tackling, and turnovers, the lack
thereof.
And if you can handle those three things, all of the optics around the game about how Denver
may be coming in with their motivation, it does not matter.
You can't be any more motivated than after knocking the chiefs off of that perch that
they've been on for the last decade, then to come in and open the season to go and say,
yeah, it wasn't even an accident.
We're going to do it again.
And then to go get punked.
So you know what I mean?
The motivation thing, I hope the Jaguars are saying the Denver team that's coming in here is the one that beat the team in the playoffs, the last season, the one that you failed to beat.
That's who you need to be worried about.
And I think your quote that you just shared is so important.
Sean Payton says a version of it as well.
He says confidence is born out of demonstrated ability.
And the Broncos right now are in a position where they have to kind of prove it to themselves.
You know, they have to prove it to themselves that, hey, we can be.
and the Jaguars present a great test.
I don't know about you,
but I know that folks are talking about Denver's early season schedule
as being this gauntlet that's like going to make or break their season.
I like that they have to play these tough games early on.
I want the tough games on the schedule.
I want this team to be tested right away.
There's no reason why they should be going week to week saying,
hey, like we can rest on our laurels or we can take it easy this week.
I mean, there's no reason to not embrace this level of competitiveness.
and to have this game before each of these two teams.
It is truly a playoff potential preview here,
and the Broncos need to prove it to themselves.
The Jaguars, they're fresh off, you know, kicking the, you know what,
or the Cleveland Browns.
And so they look like a well-oiled machine.
The Broncos absolutely do not,
but there's still matchups within the matchup
that are going to determine the outcome of this game.
Can't wait to break that down,
especially Jaguars wide receivers against Broncos, defensive backs.
I'm Jake Liscoe from the Locktown Bengals podcast.
Here to tell you today about Fabletics because they're launching a new apparel collection with the NFL's number one receiver.

And prize picks is now available nationwide.
With prize picks, you're building daily fantasy lineups by choosing two to six players and
selecting more or less on their projected stats like passing yards, rushing yards,
and fantasy score.
And I've still got my eye on Jalen Waddle this season.
I know week one was rough.
I know he didn't put up the numbers we expect, but I'm still watching him,
still monitoring him closely as somebody that I think is going to have a really big
season. And if the opportunity is there, I want to see how his numbers stack up week to week.
And that's where I like using prize picks to follow player projections. Download the app today
and use the code locked on NFL to get $150 instantly in lineups if you win your first $5
lineup. Prize picks run your game. A lot of really great matchups in this Denver Broncos
versus Jacksonville, Jaguars week two matchup. The matchups within the matchups. Jaguars wide receivers versus
Broncos defensive backs is one that we saw.
Well, it definitely went in favor of Jacksonville last year in that receiver group.
I believe, correct me if I'm wrong here, Tony,
I believe Trevor Lawrence threw four touchdowns to four different players on Sunday.
So we know that the Jaguars can feed all the mouths in that receiver room.
Is that the number one matchup that you're looking at this week?
I think that's where we got kind of maybe a little best on best, at least on paper.
On paper, yeah, that is the best on best matchup.
I'm looking forward to.
And the Jaguars are a different team.
And one thing I do like about them is the surprise that with them,
you're not necessarily preparing for a player.
You're preparing for plays.
And I know from an offensive standpoint, coaches always say players over plays.
But if all of your players are very good from one through five through that position,
well, then it's about how we're going to attack you because we're not beholden to
they don't have a, and Liam Cohen said this,
they don't operate wide receiver one, wide receiver two.
They have letters.
And the letter is what it is.
And guys go where they're supposed to go.
And you get your reads pre-snap, you go through your progressions,
and there's no liabilities.
There's no guy with a weakness.
And sometimes we perceive it as, okay,
you got your number one ex-rece receiver who makes $30 million.
And you got your five-foot, 10 slot guy.
And then you got another guy who's kind of your,
You flank, no, we don't do that.
They just don't do that kind of stuff.
They line guys up, and whoever's supposed to get the ball will get the ball based on what Trevor Lawrence sees.
And so far, he's been seeing a whole bunch correctly.
He sees the field so well.
He's been playing at an MVP pace dating back to the midway point of last season.
I mean, obviously, Broncos country got to see it firsthand when he came to Denver last year.
But he's doing such a good job, in my opinion, at escaping pressure and creating when he has to get off schedule.
as well as staying on schedule.
Staying on schedule is what the Broncos, I think, want,
ideally to give their coverage the best opportunity to go make a play on the football.
We know this pass rush can get to the quarterback in a hurry,
but it's not just a matter of getting to the quarterback.
It's finishing once you get to the quarterback.
That's another matchup that I'm looking forward to
is seeing kind of how the Broncos attack Trevor in terms of their pass rush plan
and how they make sure not just to get to him,
but to get him down because that was a major.
problem in last year's matchup between these two teams they had I mean they got to him they got
there but he gets away and he goes and makes a play so it's that initial rush and it's making sure that
you're linebackers and whoever is kind of roving around out there that those guys are ready for
him to escape the pocket and how do you have your secondary rush ready for the playmaking abilities
of Trevor Lawrence yeah that's that's a great point I think one of the ways Trevor Lawrence
and the Jaguars are going to try to attack based on on on who the
they are and based on what you saw Monday because the coaches will take some of that stuff now.
And while I said they gave the players that speech like that's not the real thing.
Oh, no, they're going to watch the tape and what they saw was Kenneth Walker going ballistic, right?
And guys, they were moving furniture.
So the Jaguars already play the brand of football where they're going to test, they're going to see
if you got some sand in your pocket.
That's just who they are.
They're going to run the football.
They're going to be physical.
They're going to move the sticks.
They're going to be very patient.
But make no mistake about it, they drafted.
Nick Borkature out of Texas A&M in the second round for a reason.
And he played 67 snaps.
And even Brian Baldinger highlighted him.
He was blocking people, he was pushing people all.
It looked like he was going to the sticks, like they were going to the hot dog stand,
him and Emmanuel Pregnan, another rookie at right guard.
So they have dedicated themselves to be a very, very physical team.
And based on Monday, I think what can happen is if they start moving people up front,
throwing those body blows, that helps Trevor Lawrence in the passing game,
because they already get the ball out very quickly.
And now Anton Harrison, their best offensive alignment is playing left tackle.
And Cole Van Lannan is playing right tackle.
And they're getting the protection in the middle with the rookie and Robert Hainsey as well as with Cleveland,
who moved from left guard to right guard to acquiesce for the rookie pregnon.
So so far so good, I know it's Cleveland, but Cleveland's front seven wasn't their weakness.
Their weakness is their offense and their quarterback and everything else going on.
on up there. But it definitely wasn't the defense. So while everybody says, well, it was just Cleveland,
they played against a pretty good Cleveland front and did a very, very good job. So maybe the
protection that they're looking for comes in the form of a running game prior to them having to pass.
Well, speaking of that, that's exactly what the Broncos desperately need. Like if we could put down
the prescription and get it signed by Dr. Football, it's a run game. That's what the Broncos need.
and they need to be able to have that sort of balance to be able to get a defense off balance, right?
I mean, you cannot be one dimensional in today's NFL case in point, Kansas City, Kenneth Walker,
running for 173, averaging 7 and a half yards of carry.
At one point in that game, Patrick Mahomes was 3 of 13 passing for 25 yards.
So it just goes to show how well you can do offensively when you are able to run the ball effectively.
And I hope the Broncos were taking notes because that's another matchup that I'm looking at is that Broncos
running game offensively, maybe coming to life against this Jaguar's defense.
Again, we're talking about one week sample size right now.
Nobody in Broncos country is sitting here thinking to themselves, Tony, like, man,
the Broncos are going to be able to run all over the Jaguars.
But that has to be the intent.
That has to be what they go into this game thinking and believing that they can do,
because if that doesn't come to life, well, then their playoff hopes are going to fizzle
away here early on in the season.
Yeah, well, I don't just tell you good luck because they look like they're better at stopping
the run and they were last year. And last year, they ranked number one in the NFL, stopping the
run. So that's what they do. They mix it up. They get after you. They're stout. Sometimes they're in a
bare front. Sometimes it's a four-man front. It is just that sometimes it's Trayvon Walker inside
next to a nose guard or next to another three technique with guys standing up on the outside.
They figure it out. And that is their priority. One of the things that they really liked about
Trayvon Walker is he provides, that's what he extended. He said, he gives us, he gives
us exactly. We can do a lot of the things we do because of him. And everyone always wants to
increase pass rush numbers, pass rush numbers. He got out to a pretty good start last year before
he got hurt. He played hurt all last year. The two seasons prior to that, he had double-digit
sacks. And Josh Allen had a year away. He had 17. They can rush the passer. Their problem has been
getting to the point where they were getting any push in the middle from the three technique
position. So that's why they were moving Trayvon inside a lot. But they have made it
a priority to as much as they wanted to improve the pass rush package overall and not just the two
starters. They said we will not sacrifice what we have built with the run. We have to stick to that.
So that is a sticking point for them and so far so good. Both of these teams are going to be looking
to obviously get back into the wind column again this week. The Jaguar is trying to improve the two and
the Broncos looking to have both of these teams finish the weekend at one and one. What's it going to take
for either of those things to happen.
Well, we're going to tell you about it coming up on today's episode,
Lockdown Broncos, Locked on Jaguars.

The Jaguars are looking to get to 2 and O.
The Broncos are looking to get in the wind column for the first time this season.
What has to happen in order for that to happen?
Well, Tony, I want to give you the floor first.
I want to hear from you.
What are the Jaguars got to do to go into Denver for a second time in a row?
Not easy for anyone to do, whether it's year to year, whether it's a division rival in the same
season playing in the playoffs, whatever it may be.
It's not easy to win twice in a row in Denver.
But the Jaguars, what do they have to do in this game?
What's the must do's in order for that to happen?
Something that they preach, and that's be where your feet are.
And it has to be play by play.
Don't try to get ahead of it.
Don't try to skip steps.
Just go out and execute.
And the one thing that I was wondering about them was they didn't play anybody during the preseason.
I don't mean the Jaguar didn't play anybody.
I mean, they're starters, man.
They had 37 dudes over there every preseason game with sweatsuits on.
So we didn't know what it was going to be like because what they decided to do this year
was that when they had joint practices for every single preseason game,
and they would go very, very hard in those joint practices.
And if Liam got what he wanted, he said, we're just not going to play them.
So I was worried that there would be rusty.
Now I'm worried that they stay grounded because they had so much success last week.
A whole bunch of things went right.
They won the turn over margin.
The one thing that did not go well, I don't know if you watched the tape or not,
they were atrocious on kickoff coverage.
I mean, it was this bad, it was worse than I had ever seen,
a Jacksonville Jaguar team.
And we have had Joe D. Camillas and we went from him to Heath Farwell.
And they're both very, very good at what they do.
It's been a long time since I can say, okay, their special teams stumped.
But their special teams, especially the kickoff coverage, was absolutely atrocious the other day.
That has to get fixed because y'all got a dangerous kid back there that can run it back.
No doubt.
I mean, Marvin Mims Jr. has been in all pro multiple times.
He's been in the Pro Bowl multiple times.
He's one of the best.
he did have a little injury in week one that kept him off of kick returns.
So I don't know what the Broncos are planning on doing there.
But undoubtedly, Sean Payton, Darren Rizzy, they will see that on tape.
And they'll say, hey, Marvin, look, I mean, we're going to put you back on kickoff return.
It was RJ Harvey and Jonah Coleman, the rookie running back last week, who, man, you said two rookie starters for the Jaguars.
And I almost got a little jealous there, Tony, because the only rookie who even suited up for the Broncos was Jonah Coleman.
the rest of the class not there not playing so really hey and look and check this out sir the
the jaguars actually had more than that i the two rookies that started in the one that caught
the touchdown trevor lawrence threw his 100th pass and josh cameron caught his first pass in the
nfl and it was from trevor lawrence speaking of a good return man i mean josh cameron he was
really good at that at baylor i remember that but yeah he's that's impressive to have that low especially
because I remember I heard all the stuff about the Jaguar's rookie class when they initially
were drafted.
The people did not grade them very well.
But you know what?
It don't matter what you get graded because you go out there and you play the game.
Right.
So I think that's a great point.
And you mentioned it earlier.
I was going to ask you to repeat yourself because I don't remember.
I don't want to put words in your mouth.
You said something about the basics of football, you know, tackling, turnovers.
What was that?
Give me that phrase one more time.
Blocking, tackling and winning a turnover game.
That's it.
Shoot, if the Broncos could do two of those things this week.
I don't mean to be, I'm not the negative guy.
Any regular listeners of Lockdown Broncos,
I get accused of being too positive,
but what did they not do against the Kansas City Chiefs?
They didn't block well, certainly.
We've got to be real about it.
They did not tackle well.
One of the worst tackling performances I've ever seen,
and I saw this team give up 70 points against the Miami Dolphins,
a near 30% missed tackle rate against the Kansas
city chiefs. And that's where, ironically, oddly enough, maybe my confidence for this team
getting back on track comes from because an NFL team, a team full of, by the way, 53 man
roster, fully healthy. Nobody was even on the injury report as questionable going into that game.
So it was the whole team. And to come out of a game like that and to have 28 missed tackles,
if I'm on that team, if I'm on that roster, there ain't no way I'm missing a single tackle,
next game. And so your hope is, is like I said at the beginning of the show that this team doesn't
just stay down and keep on taking punches, keep on getting kicked while you're down. The hope is,
is that, okay, we are, we are going to be the best offensive. People say we're the best
offensive line. We're going to go out there and be the best O line. People say we might be the best
defense in the NFL. We're going to go be the best defense in the NFL. That's the type of stuff.
You've got to be about it. I mean, you've got to be, do the basic stuff at a high level.
you're going to be in most games, right?
So as stupid as that sounds, like to do the basics well, blocking, tackling,
turnover differential.
That's literally what the Broncos, like, after what we saw against Kansas City,
that's what they got to do in week two to win.
This is the bad, and I'm being totally subjective here,
always an objective, whichever one it is.
This is the wrong team for you to be trying to fix them because, no, I'm dead serious
because the Jaguar, everything that we're talking about,
they do extremely well.
And they're very, very balanced.
They're super, super physical.
And then they're hungry, man.
They're dogs.
They just, it's like they're not the get whale crew.
You know what I mean?
I think they're, you guys can play better.
But coming into this game with those things that you're still searching for,
I would venture to say this is really the wrong team to be searching for it again.
Because they are built to be the team that doesn't do at least two of those things well.
And I think they're going to win.
I think the Jaguar's going to come win the game again.
I think Denver's going to play better.
I'll go 34-24.
That's, I mean, and that would incite an absolute frenzy of panic in Broncos country.
If that happens, if the defense gives up over 30 points again, Tony, I mean, this is, this is the issue, right?
We know this.
We cover the NFL.
We're around it every single day.
But you know how reactive fan bases can be over even just one game.
but imagine now a second straight game.
And the way that this fan base,
after being this close to winning the AFC this past year
and representing in the Super Bowl,
to have to start back from scratch,
and then to be going two steps backward
from starting from scratch,
that is the fear that is all over Broncos country.
I never manifest anything but victories.
And I believe the same thing that you said,
this is the wrong team to have to get right against.
I don't know that there's a team
that you would want to, there may be.
I mean, I shouldn't put that kind of blanket statement over it.
But this is a team that I think for the Broncos, if you prove to yourself that you can get back to,
hey, we towed up with those guys, even if we lost, like I said this to Cody on our show that
we did for yesterday, if the Broncos have to lose this game because they committed so hard to
the run and they played a tight game and it was because they just lost a tight game just because
the Jaguars are that good, which we know they are.
If they lose because they try to emphasize the run too much, fair, fine.
But play better.
Show us that you can be.
Show us the silver linings, if nothing else, that this team can still contend because
we know that starting slow doesn't doom you to an eventual premature end in the NFL.
Yeah, I think what it is is there's two ways of looking at it.
Prior to a game, you're worried about, you're focused on how you play because you believe
that how you play will dictate.
whether you win or lose. During the game, you do whatever. Even if you're playing bad, you just say,
okay, we need to get out of here with a win, right? But long term, I do believe, even though
winning is super, super important and I take that over anything, if I'm in Denver's position,
I'm sitting there thinking, I'm more concerned right now on a Wednesday or Thursday with how
they play for the rest of the year. And if that is headed in the right direction, it might be
worth being oh and two instead of one and one and still wondering if you're ever going to
get right and be able to be the team that you were last year.
So I definitely understand the point.
I just don't think it's going to be this week, but it's all good.
That's honestly a great way of putting it.
You do want to see this team play well.
And you want to see both of these teams play well, obviously, for the respective fan bases.
We can't wait for the matchup this weekend.
It's going to be nice to finally be back to a Sunday game.
