And also we'll go through our keys to victory and why the Broncos defense simply has to tackle better. And they're going to be facing a tough test with a player who forced seven missed tackles in week one. And we'll go through and tell you why the Broncos' offense needs to come out and establish the run no matter what. That is one of the biggest offensive keys to victory. We'll go throughout on today's episode of the show brought to you by our friends over there at Fandu. We'll get $350 in bonus bets guaranteed when you bet $5. every day for seven days. Join all the action at fanduil.com. Sarah, let's get into our players to watch,
Starting point is 00:01:10 my friend. It's, it's been a little bit of a short week here for the Broncos as they've had to turn the gears from Monday night's devastating loss to now focus on a tough Jacksonville Jaguars team that gave them fits last season. Who is your first player to watch here? Let's start off on the offensive side of the ball. Where are you leaning at here in Sunday's game? I'm starting with J.K. Dobbins in this game. And we know he had eight carries against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night football. that's simply not enough. We need to see more of J.K. Dobbins in this game. And he's a player to watch because I think there's an interesting little battle that went on this
Starting point is 00:01:43 offseason between the Broncos and the Jaguars. If everybody remembers back at Free Agency, the Jacksonville Jaguars actually tried to sign J.K. Dobbins. They were one of the teams that was competing with the Broncos. There was a bit of surprise when the Broncos kind of quickly brought J.K. back two-year deal, $16 million in total money, up to $20 million in incentives. one of the teams they were competing with was Jacksonville. So there was some kind of battling back and forth between these two teams to get JK.
Starting point is 00:02:12 So I think why not let him be a focal point in this game, right? Why not let him be the guy that, you know, show Jacksonville what they're missing a little bit with J.K. Dobbins and let him kind of try to take over. I know that maybe I don't know if there was some hesitation in week one, Cody. I know there just wasn't enough plays and snaps to go around, really in terms of getting him involved in the offense. but I want to see a heavy dose, a heavy workload for J.K. Dobbins in this game. I'm with you. I think 20 carries in this game for J.K. would be nice, right? He played, what, 22 steps on Monday night football didn't get as many opportunities, I think, as he would have liked.
Starting point is 00:02:45 And, you know, I had a conversation with J.K. in the locker room this week. And he told me specifically, he said, you know, we're going to be fine. We're going to get it right. It's just we got to figure out what's working, what's not. And he said, we feel like we'll get that figured out pretty quickly. So excited to see that this could be a big JK game. And obviously, you know, it's probably worth mentioning. JK wasn't available in this last game that the Broncos played against Jacksonville late last season. So how much of a wild card does that play into it?
Starting point is 00:03:10 I think it all is going to play into our offensive key to victory a little bit later about running the football. Spoiler alert Broncos country. I think everyone agrees with us on that. But JK's a guy. I think you've got to come on. You've got a force feed from the onset. Remember what the Broncos date in week two last year against the Indianapolis coast? Remember how in week one they just they didn't really commit to the run game against Tennessee.
Starting point is 00:03:28 But then Sean Payton came out and said, You know, my plan was against the Colts to come out and run it till we got a first down. Do that same game plan here specifically against the Jaguar. So I'm hoping that is going to be what we see here on Sunday. I like your player to watch. If I have to go someone on the offensive side, well, I think everyone's going to say Bo Nix. We'll get to Bo here in a minute. But I'm going to go back to Cortland Sutton here.
Starting point is 00:03:50 I think the Broncos need to find a way to involve Cortland a lot more. I didn't feel like outside of the target that he had specifically where he was, Beau Nix's past was intercepted by Monsour Delane. I just didn't feel like Cortland was as involved in terms of the focal point of the offense in Monday's game. And I think that has to change. You know, obviously that Jacksonville Jaguars have really good defensive backs. They have a really good front seven. It's going to be a tough challenge here for the Broncos.
Starting point is 00:04:16 But there can't be this just, I'd say, mentality where they just sit back and say, you know what? The defense is dictating what we're going to do today. We're just going to let it happen. No, screw that. The Broncos got to find a way to respond. They didn't let that happen with Kansas City. Kansas City just punched the mouth and they just kept letting it happen. They got a fight back here this week against Jacksonville.
Starting point is 00:04:34 And I think Cortland Sutton, your 6-foot-4 playmaker, needs to be a focal point here of this offense specifically. And I don't know who's going to draw the coverage assignment of him. But so much as what you said about getting other guys targets, I felt like Cortland's got to do it. And Cortland did. And don't get me wrong. Coralind impacted the game on Monday in different ways. Pat Bryant had a nice catch over the middle that was set up by Cortland Sutton really kind of boxing out and draw. Nick Bolton up there so it could free him across the middle.
Starting point is 00:05:00 There's ways that you can do that. But I'm talking about he needs to have a physical impact on the game and they need to find a way to target Cortland in this game specifically. And I know everyone's going to say they need target Jalen Wattle to. Yes, but Cortland is also a very important piece to get involved. And I think they've got to get him involved this week here against Jacksonville. Yeah, it's all about playing the hits, right? I mean, that's kind of what we talked about going into the Kansas City game
Starting point is 00:05:22 or coming out of the Kansas City game really is playing the hits. And the Broncos didn't do that offensively. They were kind of trying to feed everybody instead of playing the hits or in place of playing the hits. And that's not what you want. If you're listening to a radio station back in the day and they weren't playing your favorite songs, you're switching to a different radio station. Yes, I mean, folks, that used to be a thing. Like we used to be a radio.
Starting point is 00:05:44 Yeah, I'm that old. So, but yes, offensively play the hits. And that starts, I think, with guys like Sutton, J.K. Dobbins, obviously, J.L. Like you said, defensively, Cody, player to watch for me. Actually, I want to just steal a couple of names here. I want to steal the names DJ Jones, Alex Singleton, and Riley Moss. Why? Pro football reference has those three guys in particular at a combined.
Starting point is 00:06:09 Get this, 11 mistackles in that Kansas City game, four from Singleton, four from DJ Jones, three from Riley Moss. And they credited the Broncos defense. I know that there's some discrepancies and mistackles and what was a mistackle, what wasn't. They credited the Broncos with 24. So that's nearly half coming from three guys. guys. And so I want to see those guys flip the script. I want to see all three of them flip
Starting point is 00:06:33 the script in this game against Jacksonville. That's why they're my players to watch. Not because usually this is a segment where I'm like, hey, I'm most excited to watch these guys. This is a segment where I'm saying, hey, I'm nervous about these three guys going into this game because of the way they played against Kansas City. When you have to factor in two, just all the different matchups, like Bachel Tootin had what, seven runs last week that for seven missed tackles. against the Cleveland Browns, you know, and maybe is that a week one outliner? We certainly saw a lot of mistackles in week one, not just Denver. Denver had the most, but across the entire league, there were a lot of mistackles.
Starting point is 00:07:07 And once again, these guys don't get a tackle as much in practice. There's that, but then I also factor in Jacoby Myers. Sarah, Sarah's one of those, I mean, Jacoby's one of those guys that, you know, I think everyone's going to be looking at Brian Thomas and you're going to be looking, okay, is PS2 going to travel against him? Probably Jacob Myers can hurt you. Parker, Washington can hurt you. I'm looking at the Broncos three corners in this game specifically, PS2, J-Quan-McMillan
Starting point is 00:07:32 and Riley Moss because I feel like with Trevor Lawrence slinging it with the confidence he has and what Parker Washington was able to do last year against Denver, they got to find a way. It's like, I don't know if they accounted for that. They saw that in the game plan leading up to that specific matchup, but they got punked. And bad tackling in that game against Jacksonville was also another thing that hurt them that ultimately led to them trailing 34 to 20 and losing that game in Jacksonville. and you give up some big tackles, especially on third down. And remember the penalties as well that we saw last year,
Starting point is 00:08:01 especially like it was like a third and long, and they called the Broncos for rough in the passer, gave them life, they go down and they end up scoring on that drive. So I'm looking for the Broncos secondary, they need to make place. The Broncos defense has to find a way to not only tackle better. I think that's the obvious.
Starting point is 00:08:14 But this is one of those games they're going to have to go out there and they're going to force a couple of takeaways on Trevor Lawrence. He can be prone to it. But man, he does a really good job of protecting the football. Denver's going to have to ramp that intensity up this week. my eyes are on Denver secondary specifically in this matchup. Broncos country, let us know who you're offensive and defensive players to watch are on Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaggars, who you got. But coming up next, we're going to get into our keys to victory.
Starting point is 00:08:38 We're going to start on the defensive side of the ball. And no surprise, the Broncos, they've been working on tackling all week long. That's going to be one of the biggest keys here in Sunday's game. David Harrison here at the Lockdown Commanders podcast. Talk about Butcher Box. I'm someone who's always trying to make sure I'm getting enough protein. For me, that gets a whole lot easier when I've got a freezer full of the good stuff, and I'm not stuck trying to figure out what to do for dinner.

Wouldn't you know what the Denver Broncos need to tackle better if they want to win in week two against the Jacksonville Jaguars? It's a problem that they really struggled with the last time these two teams played and it's part of the reason why I think a lot of fans in the fan base, Cody, are a little nervous for this game. That's one of the keys to victory defensively for the Denver Broncos. Of course, we want to get into scheme stuff. We want to get into playmaking type stuff. We want to get into matchups type stuff. But Cody,
Starting point is 00:11:20 If you can't tackle, I mean, none of that fun stuff matters. You can't, it's just, it's, that's exactly. I felt so dumb. I was talking about this with Tony Wiggins, our good friend over there, locked on Jaguars, and he was like, in order to win games, you know, you got to basically, he's like, you got to score more points in the other team, you know, is in tackling, blocking, winning the turnover battle. And that stuff is like so true when it comes to the Denver Broncos right now.
Starting point is 00:11:45 It's like, hey, if you want to win this game, let's start by tackling the Jacksonville Jaguar. I mean, isn't it funny, though, like, as simple as it is, it's like, how do you win a game? Score more points. Well, how do you score more points? You have to execute more than the opposing team. Well, how do you execute more than the opposing team? Well, you got to get more stops when they're on the field compared to when you're on the field. So it's like, okay, it's so simple when we think about it, yet it's so hard.
Starting point is 00:12:11 And that's why I love football, man, because it's 11 versus 11. You could have 10 guys doing the right thing. One guy could mess up. And it could cost you significantly. And I think Monday's game against the Chiefs for the Broncos specifically, and the tackling department was one of it, right? So our biggest key to victory here defensively, tackle, tackle, tackle, tackle. The Broncos, they worked on it all week long as much as they can, right?
Starting point is 00:12:33 Because here's the thing. In practice, you're not going to be hitting your own guys going to the ground against your own guys. That's silly in the regular season. I think there could be some benefit to doing it a little bit during training camp like Dan Campbell and the Lions used to, but I don't know if that's worked for them since they've laid a complete stinker. My goodness, the bills wham blasted them this past week. We'll get to that some other time.
Starting point is 00:12:51 But for Denver's defense specifically, not that guys are making excuses, Sarah, like talking to guys in a locker room this week, one of the common themes was like, you know, it's hard because in practice, we don't tackle. We do run bys. Like we do near foot, near hip, near shoulder, and we do these run bys where we're going up and we can't pop the guy, but we're going up there and we're doing runbys and tapping guys. And it's like that does. I will say this as a former player and as a former coach.
Starting point is 00:13:19 I think there is a translation to that because you can't do that in practice, right? The practices are grueling enough as is. And when you add in guys physically hitting each other and going to the ground, I get it. There's got to be some simulations, though, right? And you know how we used to do it? Because we'd never tackle in practice. Not saying they're going to bring back Oklahoma drills or anything like that,
Starting point is 00:13:39 because I think that's kind of outlawed in today's game. But there are tackling drills that you can do that, you know, allow you to keep your guys safe, but also emphasize the best technique possible. So the Broncos, they're looking at Monday's game. They're looking at what happened on film, and they're trying to flush what happened because they don't want to let that carry over into this game. And the reason I say that, and tackling being the biggest king, Beechal Tooting, the second year player out of Jacksonville, he's fast, he's springy.
Starting point is 00:14:04 He forced seven missed tackles last week against the Cleveland Browns. Now, speed, that combination there, I mean, the Jaguars ran for over 100 yards against Cleveland. He and Amir Abdullah were the two guys that had probably the most success with their legs in that game specifically. And then you have to account for Trevor Lawrence with his legs, not only as a runner potentially, but also being able to extend plays outside the pocket. That's where the Broncos,
Starting point is 00:14:27 that's where the tackling has to be better. You have to be able to wrap these guys up. You shut down the run. Then you have to force Trevor Lawrence to throw, which once again, you have to also make his life difficult when he does that. It is, this is a tough challenge, Sarah, for the Broncos this week. This is probably one of the tougher challenges you could have
Starting point is 00:14:43 coming off of a bad loss that you had on Monday night football. Yeah, you got to bring your best. I mean, because the Jaguars have a lot of different ways that they can win games. They have a lot of different players that they can rely on. It's not an offense that's overly reliant on one guy. It's not an offense that's overly reliant on, hey, if we don't run the ball well, you know, we won't play well. If we don't throw the ball well, we won't play well.
Starting point is 00:15:06 They can do a lot of different things for you. And you look at even a guy like Parker, Washington, who going into last year's game against the Broncos, he was kind of an anonymous player for most folks in Broncos country. He wasn't a really well-known player at that time. Well, we know all about Parker Washington now, right? He's clearly one of the best yards after the catch receivers in the NFL. The Jaguars have heavily featured him throughout this five-game stretch where I know they're like plus 177 in the score differential.
Starting point is 00:15:35 And yes, opponents matter during that stretch. But the Broncos were one of those opponents, no doubt. So you have to look at this game and you have to. say the Jaguars, they require our best defensively. They require us to be at our, you know, top tier pass rush, top tier run defense, top tier tackling, top tier coverage. The Jaguars require it all because they do have so many guys who can make so many plays. And they just look like a well-oiled machine right now.
Starting point is 00:16:05 So that's not to incite fear amongst Broncos country, Cody. I think it's just a reality of the situation for this defense is like, Go rise to the occasion. Let's not go, like we talked about all week, are you going to stay down while you're down? You're going to just keep letting the next team kick you while you're down? Or are you going to stand back up and are you going to punch back? Because what do we know about this Broncos team?
Starting point is 00:16:27 Folks are asking out all over my Twitter feed this week. How the heck did this Broncos team beat Josh Allen and the bills? I need somebody to know something really fast. The Broncos are a really good football team, okay? They didn't play like it in week one, but this is a really good football team. And they have to prove it once again. Yes, they have to show it once again.
Starting point is 00:16:47 Yes, but they can do that. And they just need to rise to the, and it's easy for me to say, just rise to the occasion here against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Right. When we say that, it's like rise to the occasion, there's so many action items that are attached to that, right?
Starting point is 00:16:59 And I had a conversation with Justin Ad this week. And one of the things that he talked about, you know, he's like, he said, we didn't play our best friend. Boy, he said, like, that's just not, that's not who we are. And it stunk that we came out and we played that badly. And he said,
Starting point is 00:17:11 but it's a tough. We got a tough schedule and, you know, we're not complaining about it. We understand the challenge. He said the NFL doesn't care that you just played on Monday. You've got to go play another game on Sunday against a very good team. He says, for us, we got to go out there and we got to prove it. Like, you know, we're not reading the headlines or anything like that. We're going to go out there and prove that we know who we are.
Starting point is 00:17:30 And so I'm excited about that. I'm excited to see how this team is going to response. That was the one thing in the locker room that guys are saying is, you know, we, we learned from it, we watched it. We went over the stuff that we did wrong. We feel like we're going to get right back on track. and it's going to take some time. But like things aren't going to go perfect, right?
Starting point is 00:17:45 I mean, in a perfect world, if it were up to you and I and everyone in Broncos country, Sunday's game would go perfect. The Broncos would just come out and just blow the brakes off the Jaguars and just have a complete perfect, you know, I'd say trifecta, an offense, defense, special teams. And every time that Bowenix and the offense are on the field, they score. Every time the defense is on the field, they get a sack or they force a takeaway. Like it doesn't exist like that. Like it is going to be a challenge.
Starting point is 00:18:08 And I think this team is very excited for the opportunity. One thing I'll say about it. And Riley Moss said it, earlier this week. He said, you know, our DNA, our team DNA is we just got a bunch of gritty and tough guys. You know, we know that we have the ability to respond. We've done it before and we're going to do it again. So all lies are on the Broncos this week here in week two. I think another maybe key to watch, key to victory here, how do the Broncos plan to rush Trevor Lawrence, right? Like a guy who's mobile like that, not saying he's like Lamar Jackson, but Trevor
Starting point is 00:18:35 can hurt you with his legs. And here are the Broncos with his legs a couple of times last year, do you cage rush him? That's one of my things. Does the cage rush potentially restrict some of the stunts you want to do because you're so focused on keeping him within the pocket versus him trying to get outside? I'll be very curious to see what the Broncos game plan is here this week. Broncos country, what is your key to victory for Denver defensively? I'm sure it's going to be very similar to ours is tackle, tackle, let us know what it is here on today's episode of the show.
Starting point is 00:19:03 But we're going to get into our offensive keys to victory and why the Broncos must come out from the onset and establish the run. And if they can't do that, they might be in trouble. Today's episode, the show was brought to you by our friends over there at Indeed, sponsored jobs. The Denver Broncos offense has to help themselves be better in Sunday's matchup against the Jacksonville Jaggars. And the number one way to do that is by running the football.
Starting point is 00:21:35 Run the ball, run the ball, run the ball. That is one of the biggest keys to victory. here for Denver's offense. We'll get there here in a minute. Just want to say thank you so much to all the every dayers out there in Broncos country for tuning in making us your first listen here on the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Also the number one sports podcast network in the country. Through the good and the bad, we got you covered here, Broncos country at Lockdown Broncos.
Starting point is 00:21:55 All right, Sarah, I mean, we've kind of been pounding this drum all week here when we talk about the Broncos offense specifically. And of course, there's other keys to victory that we'll get into. The biggest thing this week is coming out on establishing the ground game and running the football, committing to it. And I'm hoping Davis Webb takes a page out of Sean Payton's playbook from week two of last year. Come out and just run the ball. Get J.K. Dobbins the ball.
Starting point is 00:22:16 Get him going because the Broncos, they didn't run him in the preseason. They got him limited action in week one. You didn't go through all this to just resign JK to not give him touches. Come out here and establish the run with JK, especially as RJ Harvey Harvey's dealing with a little bit of a hamstring. Yeah, absolutely, Cody. I mean, that gives you the full permission that you need to just ride. your two guys who I think we kind of agree like Jonah Coleman and J.K.
Starting point is 00:22:42 Dobbins both are sort of the run game specialist at running back, right? Not to say R.J. Harvey can't be, but he's the past game specialist at the running back position. So if he's limited or unavailable for this game, whichever the case, even if he is a full go, might be the game
Starting point is 00:22:57 to lean on J.K. and Jonah a little bit more and run the ball because what does that do for you? It does everything for you. Running the ball in a game like this sets up the pass. Running the game in a ball like this, keeps the ball in your offense's hands. It controls time of possession, keeps the ball out of the hands of the Jaguars offense. And we just spent an entire segment of the show talking about how multifaceted they are,
Starting point is 00:23:19 how good they are in so many different aspects. So if you can run the ball, you can control time of possession. Running the ball allows you to be balanced offensively. And I know that the Broncos got behind against Kansas City. That's why they were throwing a lot. And when you're throwing a lot, you know, you're not necessarily converting as many third downplays and you're having to punt the ball away and you can't string together drives, running the ball is going to help you sustain some drives.
Starting point is 00:23:44 And I do think that the Broncos should, like you said earlier, Cody, employ that same strategy that they had last year against Indianapolis where it's like, run until you get a first down. And then once you get one, keep going, right? I mean, figure out ways to go punch these guys in the mouth. And I know this is last year's number one run defense in the NFL. We understand that. But that doesn't mean that you can't meet them at where they're at.
Starting point is 00:24:06 Like go meet them up at eye level. Stand on your tiptoes if you have to. This is supposed to be the number one old line in the game. This is supposed to be, you know, one of the highest. It's not supposed to be. It is one of the highest priced offensive lines in the game. We'll trust those guys to go punch the best run defense in the mouth. Go toe up, man up against them and push them backwards.
Starting point is 00:24:28 Like that's, don't, don't mess around with the horizontal running plays. Like maybe sprinkle a couple of those in here and there. Did you see Mark Schleris video that he posted? I didn't know what he said. But basically he's saying the Broncos, they're trying to run. They're running wide zone, but they're using it as a man-to-man blocking concept instead of a zone blocking concept. He said, you can't do that. That doesn't work because he said that they were bringing the tight end up 12 yards to go get a safety,
Starting point is 00:24:56 which is not the key. It's like that sacrifices the integrity of it. So I'm very, very curious to see how they come out and run. I got some good March Schlerichlips. There's like a couple of funny things. things, but Mark makes a great point. Sarah, you nailed it. Is this offensive line just on paper what the PFF analytic guy says? Oh, it's a number one run block win rate, ESPN's, number one past block win rate. It's like, how is it the number one offensive line when they can't run the
Starting point is 00:25:24 ball? When we haven't been able to see them do that, this is one of those games. It's like, you're either going to show it or you're not. And the Broncos, they're running out of time with this unit because guys' deals are expiring. They've got to, you've got to figure it out, man. They do. I mean, 100%, like there is a vast, there's a huge chasm between the, this is the one area, by the way,
Starting point is 00:25:47 of the entire team where I feel like there's a huge chasm between what people in the media think about the Broncos offensive line versus what we who are in the trenches to use an appropriate fitting pun, what we know to be true about this team is that, yes, when you lose J.K. Dobbins after a week 10 game, last season. And for pretty much half of a season,
Starting point is 00:26:10 you can't run the ball effectively. That is indicative of scheme problem. That is indicative of offensive line problem. And you should be able to, I long for the days when the Broncos used to be able to plug Ruben drones. Shout out Ruben drones. Oh, Landis, Gary. They used to be able to plug anybody into Peyton Hillis,
Starting point is 00:26:31 not only the fourth string running back or fifth string running back, but the second string fullback. basically at the time. Like you can plug anybody into the system and they could run the ball well for you. Why? Because the guys up front knew who to block and they knew how to block. And so I'm calling out the offensive line this week. I'm not going to make it personal or anything,
Starting point is 00:26:52 but they've stunk at run blocking. They have and they need to be better. And the offense as a whole needs to be better. And if they run the ball well this weekend, Cody, I think they win the game. I think that that's the biggest key. But it also plays into our next. key to victory here for the Broncos offense. Help Bo Nix help himself.
Starting point is 00:27:10 Like I get so tired of people piling on Bo Nix and they're like, well, he's only throwing three yards past the line of scrimmage. Because guess what? It's third and 12, and they're dropping seven defenders back into zone, and you've got three routes being ran against seven coverage guys. What is Bo Nix supposed to do?
Starting point is 00:27:26 Is he supposed to throw a pass all the way through a defender that it goes right through him like gamma rays or something and it goes right to the receiver? It doesn't work that way. Like, Bo Nix, he has to play better. The fumbles, inexcusable for him last week. The interception was a bad interception. But my goodness, the Broncos last week against KC didn't help Bo Nix out. Find a way to do that this week by running the dang ball and everything else opens up. I mean, Sarah, when they're
Starting point is 00:27:52 under center against KC and this is what drove me nuts about it, going back and watching it on film, which all the film breakdowns are up for everybody in the everydayer club, the All-Axas guys. It's all up there right now. Lockdown Broncos does supercast.com. Shameless plug. Anyways, Bo Nix is under center. You think they're going to run the ball under center. No, you know what they're doing? They're trying to do play action from under center without even having established the run game. You think the defense is going to respect that? Absolutely not because they haven't proven that yet. So they got to come out here. The Broncos offensive line, to your point, has to come out here. They got to impose their will against a very tough front seven. They can't just accept,
Starting point is 00:28:26 hey, this is a big front. This is an aggressive front. We're just going to let them dictate what we want to do. That can't be the case here. And Davis Webb, with great power comes great respect. responsibility. You want it to play calling duties. Go out there, man. Don't overthink it. Just let it fly. Not in the sense of just airing it out 50 times. That's a recipe for disaster. Go out there and run the ball. Everything else will come if you trust the process. I know it's easier said than Don. I know it's easier from us sitting in our podcast studios at home. But my goodness, this Broncos team can be special. And we've said it all season long. And the Broncos have said it all season long. Our run game is further along than where it was in the last three years. So far, we haven't seen it. Go out there and show us. what you think you have seen throughout the off season. That's the last thing I'm going to say on it here. Broncos country kickoff is coming on Sunday. You'll get locked on Broncos post game show with myself and Sarah. You'll get the squad show.
