Starting point is 00:00:00 The Denver Broncos have officially taken their first step toward upgrading the wide receiver position in 2026. You are locked on Broncos. Your daily Denver Broncos podcast. Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day. The Denver Broncos wide receiver position is going to be in focus in a big way this off season. And you know what Broncos country? It all starts with who's going to be coaching that position.
Starting point is 00:00:32 Well, now we know as reports in. indicate the Denver Broncos have hired Ronald Curry as their new wide receivers coach. Very interesting move. And we're going to break down what that could mean for the wide receiver position as well as potentially some future implications of this move on a bonus episode today of Locked on Broncos. And we appreciate every single one of you, every day is out there that makes Lockdown Broncos your first listen of the day every single day.
Starting point is 00:01:00 And we're excited to be able to bring you some bonus content here in the off season. My name is Sarah Bedenger. I'm the co-host here of Lockdown Broncos, as well as the site expert at predominantly orange.com. And look, Broncos country, as we get into the offseason, we appreciate you all hitting subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts, as well as on YouTube because there's going to be a ton of stuff coming out, the NFL scouting combine right around the corner, NFL free agency,
Starting point is 00:01:25 right on its heels. And we expect the Denver Broncos to be extremely active. And certainly filling out the coaching staff is a big deal that, you know, after this season as everything's kind of setting in and you're kind of reflecting on, hey, what went wrong? What did we do well? What can we do better? Sean Payton's philosophy has typically been slow to hire, quick to fire.
Starting point is 00:01:48 So we saw that come to fruition at the end of the season. He let go of offensive coordinator, Joel Lombardi. He let go of wide receivers coach Kerry Colbert. And he let go of defensive backs coach Addison Lynch. And now we've figured out who's going to be the replacement for Kerry Colbert. And this has been a very anticipated hire for the Broncos just because I think we all agree with George Payton, Sean Payton, both of these guys say it constantly. They love what they have in that wide receiver room. And I think we can all agree that there's, there's talent in that wide receiver room.
Starting point is 00:02:20 I mean, Cortland Sutton, Marvin Mims, Troy Franklin, Pat Bryant, like these guys are talented, but are they great receivers? Are they, do they have more in them? Well, I think this move to hire Ronald Curry as the team's wide receivers coach really is indicative of the fact that Sean Peyton believes that there's more in this group that wasn't getting extracted by the previous coach. And so he's bringing it back down to the details. And we heard Sean after the season talk about how there's a proper way to catch a ball. And so you knew when he was kind of vamping on the proper way to catch a ball that, man, he was not happy with what his receivers were being taught and how they were being taught to catch passes because
Starting point is 00:03:01 over the last two seasons, the Broncos have been one of the worst teams in the NFL when it comes to dropped passes. 40 plus dropped passes this past season. Bo Nix is one of the quarterbacks who had so many air yards lost due to dropped passes. And those are just passes that are being deemed as catchable by, you know, third party analysts who are kind of the official stat keepers for the NFL. That's not an objective like, well, that was a catchable pass or, you know, that was an uncatchable ball. or that was a tough catch for even an NFL receiver to make. These are these are non-objective drops from statisticians that we're talking about. So I think over the course of a season, we can kind of see like there might even be more
Starting point is 00:03:44 when it comes to the objective drops. When it comes to the objective difficult catches and should NFL receivers be making these plays, Bo Nicks has been let down more than most quarterbacks in the NFL the past couple of years, which have been his formative years in league. And then we wonder, hey, why is the Broncos offense struggling with three and outs? Why is the Broncos offense struggling in the red zone? Why are they struggling to move the ball consistently? Why are they struggling with balance?
Starting point is 00:04:10 Well, it kind of does go back to little things like this, dropped passes. And you can look at the domino effect. You can look at the butterfly effect of issues that have stemmed from dropped passes, drives that have been cut short, touchdowns that have literally been dropped. I mean, it goes on and on. And so you're bringing in a new wide receivers coach. And I love that the Broncos brought in Ronald Curry. Curry played in the NFL for the Oakland at the time, the Oakland Raiders.
Starting point is 00:04:37 And he was a former college quarterback at North Carolina who also played on the UNC basketball team. And so he brings such a diverse background to this position group. And what I love about Ronald Curry is something that I mentioned on our Friday squad show with the boys. I love that Ronald Curry had to be good at the details in order to make it in the NFL as a receiver in the first place. As a college quarterback, as somebody who played multiple sports, you know, he didn't necessarily train full time at the college level to be an NFL wide receiver. So once he got to the league, man, he had to take coaching. He had to learn things and pick things up quickly. He had to find ways to make himself indispensable at that position.
Starting point is 00:05:22 and he brings that to the table with the way that he's coaching these wide receivers up. I know that from the fact that he's done it with the New Orleans Saints when he helped coach up, you know, Michael Thomas and those guys with New Orleans once upon a time. So he's now bringing that to Denver. He's the new wide receivers coach, but is there more that he will bring to the table in the future? Very, very interesting what could be beyond just the 2026 season with Ronald Curry. And we'll get into that on today's bonus episode, Lockdown Broncos. This show is brought to you by Fanduel.

Welcome to the five hour energy flavor draft with 18 different flavors to choose from, including new options like confetti craze, fruity rainbow, or cotton candy. There is something for everyone. The board is set.
Starting point is 00:07:06 The flavors are ready. And I've got my number one pick for the five hour energy flavor draft. And it is cotton candy. Look, anytime there's anything cotton candy flavored, whether it's an energy drink, whether it's a flavor mix, whether it's a flavor mix, whether it's an ice cream, it does not matter. If something is cotton candy flavored, I am going to go for it. I just love the creamy, slightly berry or strawberry or whatever you want to call it.
Starting point is 00:07:30 It's got that unique cotton candy flare that really doesn't, you can't get that flavor anywhere else, really. And so I think that might be my number one pick no matter what. But you know what? If I was pressed to pick a clear number two, an unrated flavor. That may be the sleeper in this whole thing. It's got to be fruity rainbow because I love me some skills. and that flavor profile is absolutely perfect, especially when it comes to an energy drink. Five-hour energy shots give you a boost with zero sugar, another huge benefit that I love because
Starting point is 00:08:01 I do not drink my calories. So five-hour energy giving us a zero-sugar option here. Well, it helps to achieve other goals that I have along with getting that energy that I need. So you can find your new flavor, your new favorite flavor of five-hour energy shots available online at five hour energy.com or Amazon. If Ronald Curry is the Denver Broncos wide receivers coach right now, it's possible he could have a bigger role in the future. Broncos country, I'm going to tell you exactly why I think this Ronald Curry move.
Starting point is 00:08:34 There's maybe more than meets the eye here when it comes to the Broncos long-term plans for the decision to bring him aboard the staff. But once again, just want to say thank you to all of you that make lockdown Broncos, your first listen of the day. Every single day you, every dayers are the. reason why Cody and I love doing this show so much. We appreciate every single one of you out there. And I like this move by the Broncos. I do. I mean, I grew up watching Ronald Curry play at both North Carolina and with the Raiders. We had to hate him when he was with the Raiders, but it was
Starting point is 00:09:04 cool to see what he was able to do as a college QB playing wide receiver in the league. And look, I feel like with this move, you're getting a clear indicator that the Broncos have one eye on the future, right? Because Ronald Curry, he interviewed. for the team's offensive coordinator job when he was, you know, when the Broncos were, you know, in that interim of, okay, who's going to be it? It seems like it should be Davis Webb. All signs are pointing to Davis Webb, but you have to interview candidates. You have to go through the NFL's Rooney Rule process, all those sorts of things, the hoops you've got to jump through to make a move like that.
Starting point is 00:09:40 Well, in that time, the Broncos interviewed Ronald Curry for the offensive coordinator job. And I think that's exactly what role he could get in the future. if Davis Webb does leave Denver for a head coaching gig. We know he had significant interest this year from the Ravens, the Bills, the Raiders, obviously he was maybe even a finalist for that Raiders job before he pulled out of that consideration. But Ronald Curry is somebody who gives you experience on Sean Peyton's staff. He works with both quarterbacks and receivers.
Starting point is 00:10:11 Most recently, he was working with the Buffalo Bills as their quarterbacks coach, and he did that for the last couple of years. So to be the quarterback's coach for a player like Josh Allen, as good as Josh Allen is, I mean, to be his position coach when he wins an MVP award, that's a pretty big deal. And he's worked with a lot of different players and coaches, whether you want to talk about, you know, Drew Breeze, Michael Thomas, the Saints. I mean, from back in the day, he's been with the best of the best. And so to have come from that Buffalo Bill's program where we know Sean Payton also wanted to kind of poach Joe Brady, right? there was reports for me in Rappaport that Sean Payton had reached out.
Starting point is 00:10:51 They were going to try to hire Joe Brady as the Broncos offensive coordinator before he agreed to become the head coach of the Buffalo Bills. So you get a little bit of a taste of that staff regardless. And I love the idea of Ronald Curry being able to work hands-on with Bo Nix at some point in the future as well because he's going to be able to teach him things that he was able to teach Josh Allen. I'd love to get a quote from Josh Allen at some point and everything that he was able to learn from Ronald Curry that helped him take his game to the next level because we really have seen Josh Allen take his game to the next level. Now obviously Ronald Curry is not coaching quarterbacks in
Starting point is 00:11:27 Denver's coaching wide receivers, which I think is important to remember for the time being. But at the same time, with one eye on the future, you kind of start to think, okay, is that a possibility at some point down at the road? Could we see offensive coordinator duties? Maybe offensive coordinator slash quarterbacks coach who knows the options are on the table at this point but it certainly does give you that sort of vibe that maybe the team made this higher with one eye on the future knowing that there is a chance that davis web could eventually get plucked away by some other team so while ronald curry is hopefully going to be an upgrade as the wide receivers coach now he could eventually be the offensive coordinator in title in the future at some point and he does
Starting point is 00:12:11 have those ties to Sean Payton. I mean, he was hired by Sean Payton as an assistant all the way back in 2016. So this is somebody who has been working with Sean for a decade now, or at least, you know, the better part of the last decade anyway, and is somebody that's very, very trusted by Sean. So I think what we're going to see Broncos country is clearly this team's wide receiver position, not just stay the same, but this was the first step in the process, right? If the Broncos believe in their young talent, they want to get a coach that can extract the best out of that young talent. Ronald Curry can hopefully do exactly that. But we'll see what the future holds because maybe he'll be on the staff in a different capacity next
Starting point is 00:12:54 offseason. But until we get there, Broncos country, we got a whole off season to go through. And the Broncos, they are going to be active. We're going to take a look at a mock draft early next week to kind of just get our feet. But as the scouting combine gets underway, what are some prospects to Broncos could be looking at in the NFL draft at their particular pick slots. We know they pick late in the draft, but that doesn't mean they can't find some diamonds in the rough. Broncos country. We'll have that and much more coming up for you on the next episode of the show.
