There might be a new running back one for the Denver Broncos and the snap count in Sunday's game against the Cardinals seems to suggest that.

What's up Broncos country? Cody Rourke here.
On today's episode of the show, we're going to talk about why Jonah Coleman's snap count percentage against Arizona Cardals might indicate he could be trending towards RB1.
Then we'll talk about whether or not the Broncos stay on the current course that is with their offensive line,
or do they still look at maybe entertaining some personnel changes?
And they'll wrap things up by highlighting what is expected to be a very big week here as a high stakes matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Looms close here in week eight.

Broncos Country, let's talk about it.
Aftermath Monday here following.
the Broncos 30 to 16 victory against the Arizona Cardinals.
And Jonah Coleman, obviously a very popular subject,
this entire offseason here for the Denver Broncos.
Despite not being the highest drafted guy for them this past year,
Jonah had the most buzz surrounding him out of any draft pick
that Denver had so far this season, and rightfully so.
Small sample size, right?
But against the Jacksonville Jaguars, we saw some sparks a little bit late in that game
in the four quarter as to what we know is a very good Jaguar.
team now. And then on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, Jonah Coleman coming back in his
first game from injury after being out for four weeks on IR to high ankle sprain, he showcased
exactly why that buzz is validated, why it is worthy to discuss here. And what I want to highlight
on that there is too for Sean Payton, this is a changing of the guard. This is different than anything
we've seen from Sean Payton, at least in his time here in the mile high city. We typically see
the younger guys, the rookies at skill player positions,
they kind of take a back seat to everybody, right?
And J.K. Dobbins, been the starter here for the Broncos,
has had a up and down season.
We've seen some flashes from JK.
But overall, the Broncos run game,
there's been a lot to be desired.
There's been a lot of meat left on the bone when it comes to evaluating that.
Certainly, we see that on the film.
We all know that the offensive line is not as good as what it was advertised as last season.
There's issues in run-block consistency, pass protection.
We've highlighted that.
But Jonah Coleman, despite some of that, it doesn't seem to matter.
And his snap count percentage from Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Broncos country seems to suggest,
and I don't know if it's a one game trend, certainly we need to see a little bit more from Sean
in terms of this over the next couple of weeks to see if it's leaning towards that being true.
But Jonah's snap count percentage in Sunday's game against Arizona suggests that he is trending towards
taking over as the primary ball carrier here for the Broncos offense.
And here's what I mean by that.
Broncos country, if you look at the stats out of all the running backs,
Jonah Coleman played 30 offensive snaps at the tailback position.
RJ Harvey was the next highest with 16 total snaps.
And then J.K. Dobbins, the veteran, the guy that Denver has invested so much in that they believe in him,
he had 14 snaps in this game.
He really kind of took a backseat to everything else offensively, really after the first quarter,
two quarters of play.
but Jonah Coleman from the early onset of Sunday's game, he got involved on the first offensive drive that Denver had.
It was the third down situation.
Bownicks checks it down to him and he gets north-south and he finds a way to get the first down.
He finished the game with nine carries for 54 yards.
And we saw a good downhill burst from him.
We saw patients where he hit the hole and everything kind of create a little bit of a pile there.
And then he bounced it to the outside.
He ran with authority in the limited snaps that we saw from him overall in terms of the nine total carries.
but the efficiency was there.
Nine carries, 54 yards.
You will take that efficiency almost every single time here.
But what stands out to me here, and this is why I mentioned Sean Payton,
what we've seen from Sean and what we've known from Sean here historically,
is that often at times he is hesitant to hand off a lot of trust to younger guys to rookies.
But with Jonah Coleman really goes back to training camp.
And we are all wondering if this was lip service at the time.
Right now, I think when you look at it,
It's really not.
Sean went out of his way.
He was asked, is there anything that surprising you're standing out to you so far here in Trini Camp?
And the one thing he thought for a second, and he brought up, he said, it's the rookie running back.
He said, you don't feel a rookie when it comes to him.
And you're seeing that.
And I remember one specific play here.
I'll reference Sunday's game against Arizona.
It's a third down.
You see him in here in pass protection.
He does a great job.
He stays square.
He gets a low center of gravity.
And he goes low and hits a rushing defender who's trying to get after Bow Nix.
makes the guy flip over and buys Bo Nick some extra time there in terms of picking up the rush.
Jonah in the past protection sense is very good.
He's the best back that Denver has in that category right now.
I would say even right now he probably even has surpassed Tyler Badegh.
But he's also right now the Broncos best runner.
And I understand when you compare his sample size to RJ Harvey,
you compare the sample size to JK.
He's got a smaller overall sample size because he's only really appeared in two games
as a guy who's touched the ball for Denver.
You had the 10 carries against the Jaguars.
A lot of those carries came late.
You had the nine overall carries in this game,
but you played 30 snaps.
You played the most snaps out of any back on Denver's roster.
There does seem to be this trust factor here that Jonah Coleman has with Sean Payton.
And for Sean, this was one of our questions coming into last,
before the game even took place.
Last week, we posed it here on the show.
We saw Davis Webb against Jacksonville try to feature RJ, JK, and Jonah.
Okay, but Sean has typically said generally you can feature two and feed two, but you can't really feed three guys.
That was kind of the case here a little bit, though I will say three guys did touch the ball quite a bit here at the running back position.
When you factor in, you know, J.K. getting his reps, he even scored a touchdown.
J.K. punched a touchdown in from the red zone, which obviously you like to see that from the one yard line.
RJ had his touchdown catch of 52 yards on the screenplay, three carries for him in this game.
So not a lot of volume in terms of the carry department for RJ.
But then you have Bo Nix with the seven carries, 70-something yards,
and obviously the 62-yard touchdown run that he had.
Denver collectively ran for over 100 yards because of Bo Nix and Jonah Coleman,
which we've talked about if Bo can find a way to use his legs and gain that mobility
and that confidence back coming off the ankle injury,
that dynamic helps the Broncos have success in the run game.
But then you have a runner who I think right now we've seen more consistency in just two games
from Jonah Coleman.
You want to see him do it more.
but it's trending in the right direction with a guy like Jonah.
So this makes me all, you know, kind of ask the question.
I'll ask it to all of you, Broncos country, feel free.
Please chime in, let me know your thoughts.
Is this revelation, is it just a one game thing here for Sean Payton with Jonah Coleman?
Or is this the start of Jonah Coleman now merging and becoming that top running back option here for the team?
Or the guy that's going to be on the field the most here for the Broncos, because here's the thing.
If you can run the ball well, you can uphold and pass protection and you can even have an impact
as a pass catcher out of the backfield.
Jonah Coleman did all of that on Sunday.
Is this a one-game trend?
Is this that one-game thing?
Or is this something where Sean Payton is going to say,
you know what?
First game coming off of IR as a rookie,
this guy handled that workload really well.
I came away very impressed after going through and watching the tape
what Jonah Coleman did.
We're working on an all-22 film breakdown right now.

com, if you want to see it,

We'll get that up here as soon as possible.
that is my question here. I do think right now with the excitement with what Sean Payton has said and certainly Sean's actions on Sunday, Jonah Coleman seems to be trending towards that RB1 here in the Mile High City.
Brockos country, please let me know your thoughts on whether or not this is just a one game off sample size or whether or not this is the trend here of Jonah eventually taken over and maybe taken over that spot there for JK, who declined to meet with the media after the game and was frustrated with that.
That was something that was documented and noted, obviously, coming out of Sunday's game.
So we'll see where things are at here as the Broncos now get ready for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Now, obviously, the run game saw us far from Jonah Coleman and from Bo Nix using their legs and their mobility.
But there's still some issues on the offensive line that we saw in Sunday's game.
Do you let one game make you stay the course here with the offensive line when it comes to personnel?
Or do you look to the future?
That's where we're going to pose here on today's episode, Locked on Broncos.

The Broncos offensive line took a step in the right direction to several parts of the
offensive line, but there's still some issues on the left side.
And after a win and after a five and two start on the season, do you mess around and change
the personnel or do you stay the course with what is?
That's what we're going to debate here on today's episode.
Lockdown Broncos, Broncos Country.
Appreciate you so much for rocking with us, making us your first listen here on the
lockdown podcast network, your team every day.
also the number one sports podcast network in the country.
Let's talk about Denver's offensive line.
Now, obviously, I would say from a pressure rate, quarterback hit rate, Denver didn't necessarily
give up a lot of QB hits to Bo Nix in Sunday's game, but the offensive line, in particular
on the left side, still allowed a lot of pressure.
We're talking about inside, shooting inside the shoulder of Ben Powers to Luke Wattenberg,
attacking those A and those B gaps on that left side.
That seems to be the strategy right now for defenses there.
And we've talked about it as well, the issues at the right tackle position with Mike McGlens.
She just not having a consistent year as well, getting beat outside, getting beat inside.
And then you talk about defenses right now.
It seems like the strategy for them what they want to do.
They're now sending nickel help.
And this came from the Arizona Cardinals game.
They're going to send the nickel from Bo Nix's left side.
They're going to rush and they're going to get pressure inside by beating Ben Powers and Luke Wattenberg.
And at times, they're going to try to try to.
just attack upfield against Mike McGlinchie because what they do by that when you have the inside
pressure in your A and your B gaps plus you get the nickel blitz there's going to be guys that get
unaccounted for right and usually it's always inside out the inside guy has the most dangerous path
to the quarterback and that's the most dangerous threat sometimes and this is where bow nicks
I feel like has elevated Denver's offensive line in particular his first two seasons is because
bow is hard to sack bow's mobility is running around throwing the football away
versus just taking a negative player or a sack.
That's what has been a strength of Boe since he's coming to the NFL.
It felt like he kind of got back to that a little bit against the Arizona Cardinals.
But if you look at the numbers according to our friends over there at NFL Next Gen stats,
Bo Nix was blitzed on 37.5% of his dropbacks.
He had 29 dropbacks during Sunday's game.
He was 15 of 29.
He was also pressured on 37.5% of his dropbacks, obviously, in Sunday's game.
And it's all coming from that inside, left side, outside, left side from a free blitzer with the nickel,
which at times you anticipate the ball is going to be out before that guy can go out there and make a play,
and then the upfield rush at the right tackle position.
So for me, I got to ask the question, do you currently stay?
You're 5 and 2 right now if you're this Broncos team.
Do you stay the course with the offensive line as is because you're winning, because you're 5 and 2?
Or do you get proactive and say, you know what?
Like, yes, we're 5 and 2, but we're looking at.
at these issues right now in terms of the consistency department, where things are at,
and we simply aren't at a point right now.
It's like this will eventually derail us this season.
To me, my personal opinion, I really believe it's the latter.
I really believe that if Denver sticks with the current group as is, I worry about it
sinking them in some of the more pivotal moments.
Let's say you get to the playoffs.
I think that's where if that, you allow it to go on as is.
And I understand you want to give a guy like Ben Powers time to, to, to grow.
row and to get his feet underneath him because, yes, he's coming off of a Liz Frank injury.
I understand that. It's hard for athletes in general to come back from Liz Frank injuries.
I think it's even more difficult for guys who are bigger, more sizable like Ben Powers to go out
there and get truly comfortable. But the Broncos have allowed this six-week window where
if you look at the O line, I think everybody can say Powers has kind of been the weakest link on the
offensive line. He and Mike McGlinchie in particular in terms of consistent.
and pass protection that has certainly been there.
The run blocking.
He's not getting up to the second level consistently enough when he needs to.
And teams are attacking that.
You've gone through this six-week stretch.
Can you afford to go a couple more weeks and it be the same results?
I personally do not think that can be the case.
And please let me know what you think on this Broncos country because I think this is a very
important topic right now as it pertains to the offense trying to find their footing and trying
to get to where they're at.
Is this an adjustment that Sean Payton now since taking over play calling duties
wants to see kind of play out a little bit longer?
You run the risk of that.
Or you look at Ben Powers who has been great during his time here in Denver.
He's having a rough year.
But overall, Powers has been very good, very valuable to the Broncos success on the
offensive line.
He's been a bright spot.
They missed him last year when he went down with the initial injury after the Philly
game.
And then we didn't even know about the Liz Frank until after the season did,
but he played through it throughout the entire playoff.
that guy is tough, very, very tough.
And I will never, ever question that.
But right now, the Broncos with the window that they have cannot afford to let these
same issues in particular at left guard impact them.
The window is open right now potentially to inquire with the Indianapolis Colts to pick up
the phone and say, hey, what would it take to get Quentin Nelson?
And it would have to be reasonable.
I'm not sure what type of asking price that they would ask, but also Nelson is entering
the last year of his deal with the Colts as.
well. So would there have to be some sort of, if we trade for this guy, my client wants to be
extended right away as well. We've seen that happen before around the NFL. So that also
changes things because Denver also has some guys that are going to be free agents after this
season. So the widespread big picture of it, you have to look at the now, but you have to look at
hey, a few months down the road when free agency begins, what type of dynamic this
presents here to the team. To me, you invested, you re-signed Alex Paucheski to a two-year deal this
off season. In my opinion, I think it's time. You've got to put a little bit of fire on there.
Let Ben Powers be the backup at left guard, right? Maybe it allows him to get a little bit more
healthier as time goes on. But Powers in the last year of his deal, he took a substantial
pay cut. And now Pauchesky has the ideal. Broncos believe he could be the guy there at the
left guard position. And there wasn't an open competition during training camp for this spot.
We saw Paucho step in last year and do well. It's time to put him back in there because it might
change things or you trade for Quentin Nelson and then you pair Quinn Miner says the right
guardie of Quentin Nelson at left guard and in return my theory just knowing how offensive line
works in unison together if you have Quentin Nelson and you have Quinn Miners there I think that
will in turn help out Luke Wattenberg a little bit more because the issue with Wattenberg has really
been the snaps the consistency with the snap placement there's been some inconsistency in protection
but he's also been pretty good in the run blocking department at times finishing his blocks he
He could be more consistent.
But I think because teams will overload the left side, they'll attack the B and the A gaps.
And that puts Luke puts the center in a tougher position.
Luke's got to get better with the snaps.
But in my opinion, the time is now for either trading for Quentin Nelson or sliding Alex Paucheski over there to the left guard spot and seeing if that boost the consistency factor of your offensive line.
And it's nothing against Ben Powers.
Once again, I like talking to Ben Powers.
I think Ben is a great human being.
I think he was a really great player for them so far, you know, when he signed his contract.
But this year it's been rough for him.
And maybe maybe a backup role.
Maybe he can get healthier if something happens and he can step back in.
But right now, the Broncos have to look to the future with the window that they certainly do have right now with this team, with the defense that they certainly have.
Right now the Broncos are five and two.
They have a chance to really push here, especially with a favorable stretch of the schedule that is coming up for them.
Let me know your thoughts here on today's episode.

Let's talk about this week's game.
Week 8, a mile high city, the NFL on CBS crew will be in town as the Broncos host to Kansas City Chiefs
where Denver is looking for their get back against the chiefs after going on the road in
week one on Monday,
football and Kansas City embarrassed Denver.
They punched them in the mouth and Denver had a hard time, obviously recovering throughout
the course of that game.
Now, there was a moment where it was 7-7 in the second quarter, but then it really kind
of got away for them right before halftime into the third quarter.
And then that was all she wrote as the Broncos had a little bit of humble pie in that game.
And it created some questions about Denver's offense.
And certainly I think those questions will remain coming into this game.
Bonnicks and the Bronco was coming off of a much better performance this week against
the Arizona Cardinals. Bow had moments throwing downfield, throwing into tight windows
where it's like, all right, that's the guy that you want to see throwing the football here,
once again, that confidence level and avoiding sacks, using his legs and his mobility.
That's going to be important against the Chiefs. They love to blitz, and they love to disguise their looks.
Especially when it comes to Bo Nix in the last three games, Kansas City, Steve Spagnolo has blitzed
either the safety of the corner on the very first play of the game.
And in the last two matchups, the Broncos have played against the Chief specifically.
The Chiefs have started off with a sack on the Broncos.
Actually, the first three games, because that first matchup was in Denver,
Christmas Day game, Patrick Mulhomes and weren't playing.
They did not get home on a sack on the first place.
So correction there on my part.
First game last year, first game this year,
but in three straight games to start the game,
Spag's has blitzed the corner and corner has gotten home twice.
So something to pay attention to specifically here in this game.
and we're going to see it.
You know, Monsore Delane is healthy.
He'll probably match up against Cortland Sutton.
We'll see where Jalen Waddle's health status is obviously at here this week
after he left the game on Sunday with an injury.
But the Chiefs here coming to this matchup,
like they've been on a role a little bit this season.
And the biggest reason why folks,
it's because of Kenneth Walker.
He jump started them this season,
week one specifically, had 200 all-purpose yards against the Broncos in that game,
has been the NFL's leading rusher.
But on Sunday night football this past week,
the Seattle Seahawks,
They beat the brakes off of Kansas City.
They made life very difficult for Patrick Holmes.
They made life difficult specifically for Kenneth Walker, their old buddy,
and they limited his impact and what he's obviously able to do.
And when you look at the numbers, obviously, in the Seahawks, 20 to 3 victory,
Kenneth Walker had 14 rushing attempts for 36 yards and really kind of forced the Chiefs
to have to abandon the run game because they were down, going into the fourth quarter,
they were down 13 to 6 and you wanted to find a way to get some rhythm.
Then Seattle scored in the fourth quarter really kind of late in those final minutes
and it kind of made the deficit a little bit larger and made it 20 to 3 there.
But Mahomes didn't have a great game either.
He finished this game 19 of 33 passing, only 165 yards, no touchdowns, one interception
and a passer rating of 58.3.
Now here's an interesting insight when you look at NFL Next Gen stats here specifically.
The Seahawks held the chiefs to 3.2.
points in their week seven win, playing nickel or dime defense pretty much on all play.
So five or six DBs, every play against that Kansas City Chiefs team.
Like that right there is interesting because of the Kenneth Walker factor.
And you typically want to go heavier against Kenneth Walker because the more bodies you
have on the trenches, the more likelihood you have a chance to slowing him down.
Seattle went with a little bit of a different approach.
Though I will say Seattle's defensive front has some really good size there with
Byron Murphy. We saw it just a couple of weeks ago when Denver played them here.
But specifically, the Chiefs were held without a touchdown.
This was the first time since Denver beat them several years ago in 2023.
It was week eight where the Broncos won that game 24 to 9 in Empower Field.
It snapped the Broncos longstanding losing street to Kansas City.
This was the second time in Patrick Holmes' career where they did not score a touchdown, Kansas City.
And now it's kind of full circle because now,
Now you've got to come to Empowerfield, which has the most raucous fan base on third down.
It's like a scene out of Jurassic Park where my water bottle on the press box, and I take a video of it every game because it just continues to blow my mind how loud it gets there.
But my water bottle will sit on the press box table and it will shake.
And when Mahomes and the Chiefs have the ball, the stadium will shake.
First down, second down, third down.
It is going to be a loud environment.
And that's exactly what the Broncos need.
They didn't have that on the road at Arrowhead because it's also one of the loudest stadiums at venue.
So that, you know, it's kind of the inverse happened to Denver in that game specifically.
But that's where the thing is.
And to me, this matchup is big because of the AFC West Division Stakes.
Right.
And you have a chance to go one-on-one against Kansas City.
Your division record's really going to matter.
You know, the Raiders, they started off hot.
They're kind of in flux right now.
They've dropped a couple of games here.
But this division race down the stretch is going to be very interesting.
and I'm curious to see where Vegas ultimately ends up,
but the Chiefs are your biggest threat right now,
which in the off season,
we thought the Chargers would be the biggest threat here to the Broncos.
That certainly has not been the case.
The Chargers has been a massive disappointment this season.
So you have a chance to win this.
With a win, you get a 1-1 series tiebreaker,
essentially against Kansas City,
how you do the rest of the way an AFC conference plays
ultimately going to matter when you talk about down the stretch,
playoff seating, tie breaker,
those things are certainly going to matter,
especially as Denver plays a lot of AFC games
in the second half stretch of their schedule.
It's going to be paramount that they win this game here on Sunday against KC,
but it's not going to be easy.
It's going to be a tough test.
But that's why you tune in.
The Broncos right now hopefully can ride this wave of momentum
that they felt from this last game where things were starting to work for them
in certain spots offensively with Bo Nix,
with the run game with Jonah Coleman and the defense continuing to find their groove
after what had really happened week one against Kenneth Walker and the Chiefs.
defense has been drastically better ever since.
That was a moment, right?
We always talk about it.
Payne could do a couple of things for you.
You can learn from it or you can keep repeating the same exact mistakes.
And it seems like the Broncos, they wanted to learn from the pain that was that week
one matchup specifically against the run, the missed tackles.
And all the narratives that came after that.
And now, Kansas City's kind of got their back against the wall.
Yes, they just dropped their first game, but it was how they got beaten.
Seattle might have revealed a little bit of a blueprint.
on how you might be able to beat Kenneth Walker,
specifically when you go with the nickel and the dime packages,
not having to go as heavy personnel-wise like Denver did in that first game.
And then Denver's obviously got the tape from the first game
where this is what Kansas City might do to us if we come out in this look
or in this down-and-distance situations.
It allows Vance Joseph and the coaching staff to go out there
and to correct some of those mistakes here.
Big, big matchup here, Broncos country.
