Starting point is 00:00:27 And on today's show, we're going to recap the weekend that was in Major League Baseball and how what the Cardinals did this weekend is. in Chicago affected their playoff status. Have they made up any ground as well as they've been playing? We're going to get into that incredible Joshua Baez game, which still has the league buzzing and just baseball fans in general, buzzing because that was something. But we're going to start with what we saw on Sunday,

Starting point is 00:00:52 which can be described in one word. At least that's how I'm going to describe it. Domination. Domination. We got the ugly shirt on for those of you on video. as we win yet another series. Phenomenal stuff. Remember for a while there, we didn't win any.

Starting point is 00:01:10 And now, yeah, four in a row. And beating the Cubs, that's fun. We enjoy that a lot. And the Chicago Cubs, first off, credits of the Chicago Cubs, man. They're a very good baseball team. You know this. I know this.

Starting point is 00:01:24 In the grand scheme of things in the National League, you've got the Brewers and the Dodgers. They're the cream of the crop. Atlanta and Chicago, in my opinion are the next year down. But that's right there. They're right there. The Cubs also have one of the best home records in the league.

Starting point is 00:01:44 Coming into Sunday, they had 36 wins at Wrigley. The only team with more wins coming into Sunday were the Rays, Brewers, and Braves who have 41, Marlins, of all people, have 38. Then the Padres, Dodgers, and White Sox with 37, and then you got the Cubs. And not surprising, all of those, teams are in a playoff spot right now except for the marlins the marlins are not in one at this

Starting point is 00:02:09 moment but you know they're right on the cusp of it they're in the in a wild card hunt along with the rest of us like the cardinals and uh diamondbacks podra you know we're all right there philly and for whatever reason the cardinals have played some of their best baseball at rigley field this year. I'm texting with Sam Ulber from Locked on Cubs. You know, we keep in touch when the teams are playing each other. And, you know, he's like, I, it's been a while since I've seen it like this between the Cardinals and the Cubs where the Cardinals just come in and just own us. And I'm like, yeah, I don't know what it is. I don't know what it is about Wrigley Field. Obviously, not playing a Bush stadium helps the Cardinals offense. So I don't know if it's the Cubs pitching that just falls apart

Starting point is 00:03:06 when they face the Cardinals. I don't know if it's the excitement of just the venue and, you know, the surroundings and the ambiance and everything that is Wrigley Field that makes this young Cardinals team come to life and, you know, step up and play to a different level. I don't know, but I like it. I like it after the win on Sunday, which was a dominating 11 to 4 performance. Cardinals finished their tour of Wrigley in 2026 with a 4-2 record. They outscore the Cubs 43 to 18. 43 to 18. Now, yes, the 17-1 butt-wipping back on July the 3rd skewed things a little bit.

Starting point is 00:03:46 I get that. But still, very impressive year for the Cardinals in hostile enemy territory. Sunday's game got off to a great start with the spoon that stirs the Kool-Aid. you know him better is JJ Weatherhole leading off with a well-placed double down the line in the left field. Again, you get you get JJ taking things the opposite way. That's the best JJ. I want to see more of that. Herrera moves them over to third with one out like a good teammate should.

Starting point is 00:04:19 Hits the ground into the right side. And that brings up Alec Berluson, who has just been on a heater lately. And he gets a one-one change up from Edward. Cabrera who was making his return after being on the I-L. Chain jump is Cabrera's best pitch. Burley looking for it. At the bottom of the zone, what a bad pitch. Caught a little more of the plate than you probably won if you're a Cubs fan.

Starting point is 00:04:43 But Burley goes down and gets it, tattoos it for a two-run blast to right field, 105.8 off the bat, 421 feet, a no-douder, makes it two to nothing. And the crazy part is if you go back and you look at the swing that Burley took, it's not like he took some, you know, mega hack and was like swinging for the fences. No, he didn't. He stayed back, squared it up beautifully. Top hand leaves the bat right after impact. You know, at first I thought he did hit it with one hand.

Starting point is 00:05:12 But going back and slowing it down, I was like, no, no, he held on to there. But just a beautiful job of hitting. Sweet spot of the bat. Let the velocity do the work. Boom. His second's anger in as many days. And that really set the tone for the. day. You know, the Cubs had to feel a little bit deflated after the record setting day by Joshua

Starting point is 00:05:32 Baez and the five home run performance overall by the Cardinals and Saturdays when. And the last thing, if you're on the other side of things, is you want to immediately fall into a hole and be down a couple of runs. And then to have it happen that way where it's a two-run bomb like that, you know, that's not what you want. If you're on the other. side if you're a Cubs fan. And this burly bomb, 21st of the year, ties his career high in a single season that he set back in 2024,

Starting point is 00:06:05 barring something catastrophic. He's going to shatter that mark here in 2026. I think he, can he get to 30? It's going to be tough. That's going to be tough because when your home games are at Bush Stadium and the ball goes nowhere, that makes life tough.

Starting point is 00:06:22 But here we are in August 17th, and he's at 21 already. a hell of a season for for burly. RBI total, he's already past that. He's sitting it's 90 on the year now, which is now second best in baseball behind C.J. Abrams and South Stewart, who each have 91. Yeah, it's no wonder that so many fans are, you know, clamoring for like,

Starting point is 00:06:45 hey, what about an extension for Burley? What do you guys think? Finishes the day, three for five, four RBIs continues to be a force in the middle of the lineup, along with Jordan Walker, who also had a huge day at the play. bunch of extra base hits for big J-dub. Biggest one came in what ended up being the decisive fourth inning when the Cardinals took full control of this game.

Starting point is 00:07:07 PCA just hit that two-run blast in the bottom of the third. So we had a three-to-two ball game, momentum of swinging back towards the Cubs. But the Cardinals slow things down again. You know, like in like basketball. Another team starts going up-tempo. They're going down, scoring quickly. What do you do?

Starting point is 00:07:26 Slow it down, slow it down, slow it down, walk it up, get it up to half court, chill out for a second. And that's kind of what the Cardinals did when they came up to the plate in the top of the fourth inning. They get a couple walks by Mason Wynn and Jimmy Crooks, Blaise Jordan, who also had a solid day, follows with the single. And now the Cubs are staring at bases loaded and one out with the top of the Cardinals order at the plate. J.J. Weatherholt, wise, beyond his years, baseball wise, follow suit, stays patient at the plate. He works a bases loaded walk. They even challenge it. Challenge fails.

Starting point is 00:08:00 Run comes in, four to two. That brings up Pereira, who once again, nothing fancy, does his job. It's a sack fly to right field, makes it five to two. Burley slashes that two out two run single to left field to make it seven to two. That brings up Jordan Walker, who works a full count before he smacks the two run dinger into the basket in center field for his 24th home run of the season. And now we're looking at a nine to two ball game. and the cardals are running away with things.

Starting point is 00:08:26 And that was basically all she wrote. You know, I get that it was only the fourth inning. I'm just like you. I'm like, cool. Keep scoring because you'd never know. We've seen other teams come back against the Cardals before this year. But that inning really sucked all the air out of Wrigley Field. And the cardals coasted the rest of the way.

Starting point is 00:08:46 Top four in the order, J.J. Herrera, Burley Walker, combined to go nine for 16, seven runs scored, six extra base hits, including the two home runs. They get two walks, drove in 10 of the 11 Cardinals runs. Like I said, domination. Joshua Baez, 0 for 5 in this particular game. So, yes, he's human. He's not, he's not a machine. He's a man. Goes 0 for 5. But the rest of the lineup, you know, that's what you do. When one part of the lineup starts to falter a little bit, other people are there to pick them up. So shout out to Jimmy Crooks and Blaise Jordan, who had four hits combined between the two of them, scored three runs from the eight and nine spots.

Starting point is 00:09:31 And you know how important it is to get production from the bottom of the lineup. That way you can turn things over, get back to the top of the order where the big guys will have a chance to come up with some runners on. And they succeeded in a major, major way on Sunday. They were great. Hunter Dobbins goes five innings, ties his career in strikeouts with seven, which he did last year with Boston. That's a career high as far as being in the carton uniform. four in this game, which is something like, obviously he's not going to be happy about afterwards, but he only allows two hits. And he picks up his third win of the season. He was solid.

Starting point is 00:10:01 Luis Gastilum tosses two scoreless in as he strikes out three. His last three appearances, you know, it wasn't that long ago. We were watching him get his brains kicked in by, who was it? I was Toronto first. And what was it, Colorado? No, it was in New York, New York right after that. But, you know, he had back-to-back really ugly games. Everybody's like, dude, this guy, does he belong here or not? And I had to stick up for him. I was like, look, yeah, he's learning at the major league level. There's going to be some lumps here.

Starting point is 00:10:30 You're going to see some warts, but they need him to be better and need him to be a part of this bullpen moving forward. Since then, like his last three appearances, he's been awesome. He tosses two scoreless settings here, strikes out three, last three appearances, four and a third innings, walks one, has one hit against. and had struck out eight. I would say he's headed in the right direction. Gordon Grecefo, Caleb Ferguson, each allow a run,

Starting point is 00:10:59 but it hardly changed the outcome. Nobody's freaking out about it. At least Ferguson didn't walk anybody in this one. 11 to 4 winner for the Cardinals. They win the series. They win the overall series. 7 to 6, which probably won't sit too well with the folks at the Cubby Baron Wrigleyville.

Starting point is 00:11:17 But that's how it rolled. Up next, we're going to go back to the bias game. We got to talk about it. Saturday's incredible performance where the guy didn't even, didn't even wear his own spikes, didn't even wear his own spikes while making history. As I said in my game or recap on Saturday, Cardinals fans are going to be asking where were you with Joshua Baez debuted, hopefully to each other for years to come? You know, hopefully this isn't the peak of everything. Hopefully he has a long and illustrious career in a Cardinals uniform, but nobody in the history of the game has ever made a debut like that.

Starting point is 00:13:38 Think about all the names and how many years Major League Baseball has been around. None of the legends did this. Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, Albert Poolews, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr. Any of the top home run people, none of them have ever done this. None of them have done what this 23-year-old accomplished on Saturday. Incredible stuff. Absolutely incredible stuff.

Starting point is 00:14:10 Three home runs in his first three Major League at Bats. Only two players had ever homered in their first career at Bats. That's how rare this is. Only eight players before head home or twice in their debut in Major League Baseball history. The last cardal to Homer on the first pitch of his career. You heard this during the telecast, Adam Wainwright. in 2006, which is very amusing considering he was a pitcher. Very good hitting pitcher, though.

Starting point is 00:14:36 The five RBIs equaled the Cardinals record for most RBIs in a debut. Baez also became only the third Cardinal to hit three home runs in a game at Wrigley, joining Matt Carpenter, who did it back in 2018. Albert Pooholz did it twice in 2004 and 2010. It is a feat that had never happened before. It will likely never happen again. similar to the Fernando Tatis senior, two grand slams and one inning against Chanho Park out in L.A. back in 1999. I remember watching that game. I'm like, no way.

Starting point is 00:15:12 I don't think this is going to happen again because I don't think after two home runs that whoever the opposition is going to be thrown to the next guy, you know, to give him an opportunity for something like that. The fact that the Cubs kept pitching to him by the third at bat was a little eyebrowsing to me. But I get it. You know, he's a rookie. He strikes out a lot of the minors. Surely they can get him out of the big league level. But Baez had an invisible Superman cape on during the game on Saturday. Even the lineup at his fourth bat was hit well.

Starting point is 00:15:46 Like it even got a ooh from the crowd. And hey, props to the crowd at Wrigley Field. Like that was cool. Not just the ones that were wearing the Cardinal Red, but the ones in the cubby blue, who gave him a standing ovation after he had made the out in his fourth at back. You know, and maybe they were doing it as kind of like a Bronx cheer for their own pitchers to finally get him out. But I don't think that's what was going on.

Starting point is 00:16:15 Maybe a little portion of it was from that. But I think they were genuinely just like, dude, that was cool. That was cool, Joshua Baez. You know you've done something impressive when you were in the respect of fans like the Cubs fans, you know, fans like, you know, I think of them in the similar vein as I think of like Yankees fans and Red Sox fans and Phillies fans. Like, you know, they can be a little hostile from time to time, but at the same time, they're baseball fans. They know what the hell's going on. And when something great happens, they appreciate it. Sure, they would rather happen with

Starting point is 00:16:50 one of their players and not the opposition, but they recognized that that was something that was very rare and very cool. And in the moment, they were like, dude, that's, that's, that's great. You know, it's stuff that the Cardl's fans, you know, that we give ourselves credit for when we see something special at a game, whether it's in our uniform or not, you'll see Cardinals fans acknowledge that player doing something well. And that was really neat to see the, the Cubs fans respond that way. But what a moment, what a scene.

Starting point is 00:17:21 And then, of course, Josh and his family, you know, he had, what was it, like 30 plus family members and friends in the stands. They're down on the field afterwards with him, hugging him, showing him all the love. I mean, it was, I mean, what a moment. What, how cool is it? Like Brad Pitt said in Moneyball, like, how can you not be romantic about baseball? That is one of those moments where you're just like, this is why I love the sport. It's so good. And you know, when something special happens like this, you know, a player will often send something from whatever they wore that day to Cooperstown to be put on display so that fans can see it. And this is where the story gets a little interesting

Starting point is 00:18:02 with Joshua Baez and the spikes that he wore in this historic game. So when he arrived to the Cardinals Clubhouse, apparently he didn't have a whole lot of equipment with him. That's the story because he's coming from the minors. It's not like the major leagues where they just have tons and tons of stuff. Like he had a little bit of stuff with him, spikes, gloves and stuff. And I guess none of that stuff really matched the uniform that they're wearing on Saturday when they were wearing the victory blues with the red. So Baez was some help from Brian Torres, who was his teammate at Memphis earlier this season, had to find people who wore the same brands that Joshua Baez is affiliated with,

Starting point is 00:18:41 had to find the right colors and the right sizes to match. Not the easiest thing in the world, but he was able to find some matches. He got the spikes from Blaze Jordan. They wear the same size, which size is 12, apparently. they got batting gloves from Jose Fermin, and he went off and had the greatest offensive debut in the history of the league, wearing stuff that technically did not even belong to him. According to the reports, the cleats are going to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Starting point is 00:19:09 They'll be on display there, which makes plays Jordan very happy, because on the inside of the spikes, they say Jordan inside of them to, like the spikes I have behind me, If you're on video, I have Shelby Miller's spikes from his rookie year because I thought he was going to be, yeah, his first round pick. I thought he was going to be something special. So we got him at spring training. And it says Miller on the tongue there.

Starting point is 00:19:34 And there's little references to him because they're, you know, his spikes. And that's what Blaze Jordan has. He's got Jordan on the inside of those spikes. But those are the ones Joshua Baez were on Saturday. So technically, part of Blaze Jordan is going here. into the Hall of Fame. So a cool story, some cool details that are now part of St. Louis Cardinals' Lord forever. So that was nice. But how did this series affect what's going on with the Cardinals and their chase in the NL Wildcard? Are they still in it? Where do things stand? Plus, we'll get your preview of the Cincinnati series coming up next on Locked on Cardinals.

Starting point is 00:21:38 carlos your first list another day thank you for making locked on the number one sports podcast network very very rare the cardinals are going to have a bunch of day games in a row right now and you know all the games in chicago were were day games and then you've got another day game because we've got a double header here on monday and i'm no fans hate that I keep bringing up the wild card. Not all of them, but some of them. You know, I get a lot of resistance from some people who have written the season off after the trade deadline.

Starting point is 00:22:10 Hey, you sold. That means you don't want to win. You're out. And I understand that. I get that mentality. But stranger things have happened in this game. And the Cardinals have now won four straight series beating the Yankees in New York, the Rockies and Phillies at Bush Stadium,

Starting point is 00:22:28 and now the Cubs at Wrigley in Chicago. Three out of those four teams probably going to be playing ball in October. So I don't think it's something you just brush aside as like, oh, we're getting lucky. Could it be that the team is actually jelling and coming together at the end of the season when you want to be on a hot streak?

Starting point is 00:22:52 You know, we've seen teams that have gone on runs before, hello, 2011 Cardinals, 18 and 8 in September before winning it all over Texas, 2021. They go 22 and 7 in September to make the wild card. We won't talk about what happened in the wild card game. But it can happen is what I'm saying. Like you can get hot, go on a run, and boom, you're in the playoffs. Now the odds are against them for sure. I'm not saying like, hey, man, there they are.

Starting point is 00:23:22 They're a top playoffs. I'm not saying that. not, but they're not out of it. They're playing meaningful baseball right now in the middle of August, headed toward the back end of August, which is not something that many experts thought they'd be doing this year, especially after that. I didn't think they'd be doing it either. After that nasty July, it kind of felt like those experts were going to be right and they're going to be a lot of a I told you so. And I'm glad that hasn't happened. It's a lot more fun when you're still competing. and you're still a part of things.

Starting point is 00:23:57 Maybe on the outside, they are, but they're hanging around. They're hanging around. Starting pitching has been excellent lately. Offense starting to come back to life. Many of the bullpen pieces are throwing well. The thing is, now you need the teams that are ahead of you to slow down and cool off a little bit so you got a chance to catch them.

Starting point is 00:24:17 And that's really the stink of it all is you've fallen back far enough in this, the pack here that to get out, not only do you have to keep winning, but teams in front of you have got to start losing too. So, and just to show you how difficult this is, after the one on Sunday in Toronto. So like the first, what was that, August 2nd, the Cardinals were 55 and 57, right? Trade deadlines coming up the next day. We all know what they're going to do. They're trading people away.

Starting point is 00:24:51 Now you're thinking, hey, let's just try to stay above five. for the season. Wouldn't that be cool? There are four back in the wild card at this point. Since then, they have taken two out of three in New York, two out of three at home against Colorado, two out of three at home against Philly, two out of three in Chicago against the Cups. Pretty successful, right? All that work, all that winning. You know what they've gained in the standings with all of that? A half game. A half game. They are now, three and a half back in the wild card. That's how difficult this is.

Starting point is 00:25:29 The Padres have been on fire. They're eight and two in their last 10. Arizona's been mid. They're five and five. Marlins are six and four. Just took two or three from the Reds, who the Cardinals are about to play. That's why this is so difficult.

Starting point is 00:25:43 So once again, you know, you're at a point where, and we were here earlier, where you're getting ready to face a team who on paper, you should be better than that. And these are games that should be winnable. But you've got to go out there and take care of business. And the Cardinals went through a rut there

Starting point is 00:26:04 where they did not take care of business and now they're paying for it. And now you're going to face the Cincinnati Reds, who you've played well against this year. But the Reds have also played better recently. That's the thing. It's like you're not catching them at a great time. It's not the worst time either,

Starting point is 00:26:22 but they're 2019 since the start of July. similar to the Cardinals. They've also got a little chip on their shoulder right now about this whole NL Rookie of the Year debate between Sal Stewart and J.J. Weatherhole, like, J.J. is living in their head rent free right now. Like, they are all sorts of different X accounts. I've seen them where they are continuously posting sarcastic things

Starting point is 00:26:50 about JJ, like that pop-up in Chicago that he didn't catch. And they're like, ooh, Look at the defensive metrics and this and debt because they're all, they're like, Sal better win this thing. How stupid war is as a statistic and how Sal should be winning this thing hands down. And this is going to be their rally cry. I'm going to predict it now. This is going to be the Reds and their fan bases rally cry for the next four days when they face

Starting point is 00:27:24 each other five times. The Reds, of course, they want to. of course they want to win. They want to beat the Cardinals. We're tired of losing to them. But if Sal goes off, if they go one and four against the Cardinals, but Sal Stewart has an amazing series, that will be sufficient enough for them. That'll feel like a W to them in their book. That's where they are. So no matter how big or small the crowds are for the next four days during these five games, you can be sure you're going to hear a little extra enthusiasm and cheering for anything that Sal Stewart does.

Starting point is 00:28:01 If he ties his shoe correctly, yeah, they're all going to have his back. They're very loyal. And you're also going to hear some extra loud jeering and probably some sarcastic clapping when they get JJ Weatherholt out or if he does anything remotely wrong. If he makes an air, oh boy, look out. So I hope JJ's ready for this mentally because they're going to be hardcore against them because this is like their World Series now. It's just Sal against JJ.

Starting point is 00:28:32 That's all they got. Meanwhile, the Cardinals, as much as we would love to see JJ win this award, that way we get the draft pick. I don't care. I really just want them to take care of business like they have against the Reds for most of the season. They're five and three against them. Reds are out on Hunter Green. He's done again.

Starting point is 00:28:52 Tommy John surgery. Spencer Steer's been out. Some bullpen guys have been out. Now, they still got Chase Burns, who you're going to see in this series. He's outstanding. He's almost unhittable. Offensively, L.A. D.A.C. J.J. Bladay is very good at home at Great American Ballpark.

Starting point is 00:29:11 Sal Stewart, all three of those guys have an Opsos over 830 at GABP, or otherwise known as Great American Small Park. E. E. E.J.O. Hennie O'Swarez, Tyler Stevenson. They've been hitting well, a couple of dingers and six ribbies apiece in the last week. We know how goofy things can get. in that place. You know? What did Wainwright call it?

Starting point is 00:29:34 Like the devil's play pin or something? I forget what he called it. But anyway, like, we know it could get a little goofy there. A lot of runs can be scored. You got Quinn Matthews, who was set to start the first game of the double-header today. Andre Palante in game two. Matthews, if any advice I can give you, Quinn, limit the walks, keep the ball in the ballpark. That's how you win.

Starting point is 00:29:56 Palante, you just keep doing whatever the hell it is you've been doing against the Reds because in his career, he has owned them.
