Starting point is 00:00:00 The St. Louis Cardinals are sending down their starting center fielder, Victor Scott, the second, why this is happening and what it means for the team moving forward. This is Locked on Cardinals. You are Locked on Cardinals. Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. Hey there, Cardals fans. I am J.D. Haffron and welcome in to another episode of Locked on Cardinals. Today's episode being brought to you by Fanduel, the biggest stage in World Sucson.
Starting point is 00:00:34 soccer is here. Let there be goals on Fandle. Visit fandle.com to get started. Today's show, we're going to recap the sweep over the Cincinnati Reds. That's why we got the beautiful shirt on here today. I feel like it's been a little bit since I had a chance to wear this. A series that saw the Cardinals kind of kick a team while they are down just like you should. We'll talk about the division. We'll talk about the latest power rankings. Ollie's going to the All-Star game. But we start with the news that broke after the game on Sunday. And it's a game where this guy was an integral part of the victory.
Starting point is 00:01:18 And that is the emotion of starting center fielder, Victor Scott, the second to Memphis. Now, per multiple reports, the Cardinals have optioned their center fielder to AAA Memphis. It hasn't been made official, at least not that I have seen yet, but multiple places are reporting that it is going to happen. He did not travel with the team to New York. He was batting 194, two home runs, nine ribbies, five-34 OPS. Stinky, right? Very stinky. Shout out to Tamar Cher at KMOV.
Starting point is 00:01:47 I believe she was the first one on that. But this is significant news in quite a few ways. But let's talk about the victor side of this first. The guy clearly has talent. Nobody is denying this. He's got speed, athletic, athleticism, the defense, all of that is top notch. Like elite in some areas,
Starting point is 00:02:10 87th percentile with his range in center field. We know he's gold caliber, gold glove worthy type of defense that he can bring you. 98 percentile in sprint speed. Like there's just not many people who are faster than him in this league. But that doesn't do you much good when you can't get on base. His inability to do almost anything offensively offsets any of these positives that Victor Scott has. Great dude in the clubhouse. Everybody loves the guy.
Starting point is 00:02:44 We've had him on the show before. Cool guy. Very smooth, right? Like, there's a lot of good things about him. But he just offensively, there's just almost nothing there. And you cannot be an empty slot in the batting order every single, and expect to stay in the starting lineup in this league. Now, if you wanted to move Victor Scott, like his type of attributes, his skills,
Starting point is 00:03:14 if you want that to be like a bench guy for you, cool. That makes total sense. But you can't have them as a starter. You just can't. And I know analytics aren't the be all end all, but his baseball Savon page is gruesome looking. Every category except chase rate falls below the 50th percentile. And most of it is below the 16th percentile. Exit velocity, 14th, hard hit percentage.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Third, barrel percentage. Second. And remember, the higher the number is, the better you are. So he is at the bottom for those. Some of the worst numbers that you can get. And it's not like this is a small sample size. You know, this isn't just a couple of weeks, a cup of coffee in the show. He's been like this for a while, for a while now.
Starting point is 00:04:10 And they've given him all of these opportunities to step up and be kind of that second lead off guy at the bottom of the order. And it just isn't happening. It's just not working. Again, he has the key bunt in Sunday's game in that eighth inning that leads to the go-ahead run scoring, but he's kind of become a one-trick pony. like he's bunting more than anything else because he can't hit very well. And honestly, a lot of the bunts recently haven't been all that great in the first place.
Starting point is 00:04:43 Now, the other thing that makes this move possible is that the Cardinals are getting healthier and there's more depth at the position now. Just in the outfield in general. From the left side, you've got Lars Dupar, who was healthy and was huge in this series sweep over over the Reds. Brian Torres has shown that he can handle life in the big leagues after finally getting a shot. Offers a lot of versatility. Can play all three outfield positions and play infield. That's a hell of a piece to have. And he's a contact guy. Doesn't strike out a ton. Like he's got some really good attributes. And then you've got Nathan Church, who is one of the biggest
Starting point is 00:05:26 pieces here because he's the guy that's going to get activated after doing his rehab assignment this weekend. And he's the guy that I feel like is going to take over center field almost every deck. He's already had plenty of highlight real catches this year. Has been much better than Victor offensively. He was slashing 247, 282, 390 with a 672 OPS, 5 dingers, 18 ribbies, six doubles in 45 games. And he's still a rookie. Well, it's don't forget about that. Like he's still a young man. Like he had that cup of coffee at the end of last year.
Starting point is 00:06:02 But, you know, this is, you know, first time going through this thing as a regular. So all of that. And then you got from the right side as far as your outbuilders go, soon to be all-star Jordan Walker in right field, Jose Fermin, big series this weekend against the Reds continues to show that he can do just about anything Ollie needs him to do, whether it's play shortstop, whether it's play one of the corner positions in the outfield. Can he pull off center field? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe you can. And then you've got Nelson Velasquez, who is hitting 389 since getting brought up. He offers that thump off the bench. So you're
Starting point is 00:06:40 seeing the Cardinals upgrade in certain spots. So Jacey's gone, down to Memphis. Joe Al Pozo gone, down to Memphis. Now Victor Scott, gone, down to to Memphis. You're seeing other people who took advantage of their chances and have run with it, and the Cardinals are rewarding that, which is the way it should be, right? So there's just better options than Victor right now. And as much as it makes sense to have them on your roster, as I said, is like, you know, you want to keep them on the bench as like a defensive replacement or as a pinch runner. You get that. It makes sense. But the hope is that there's more than that for Victor Scott, that he can be more than that at the big league level.
Starting point is 00:07:25 And I don't know if he can. He hasn't shown that he can in over 250 games played and over 800 played appearances. He has not proven that he can hit at the major league level and get on base enough to make that speed a real weapon. And then, you know, defensive-wise, yeah, it's great to have that. But you cannot just be nothing offensively and stick around. similar to Thomas and Jacey.
Starting point is 00:07:53 What they need him to do is go somewhere where he can play and try to improve. And that's at Memphis. That's not in the big leagues right now. Show them. This is your chance for Victor and for Thomas to show them that, you know, they should get another shot at the big league club. And when something opens up, whether it's via trade, whether it's via injuries, they'll be at the top of the list.
Starting point is 00:08:19 So that's what's going on with the Victor Scott situation. I know a lot of people are like, finally, long overdue, but at the same time, you had to wait until everybody got healthy. And we all knew with Newt coming back, some things were going to shuffle. And you knew when Nathan Church coming back, more things were going to have to shuffle. And it is not surprising that this is what happened. I think it's the smart thing to do.
Starting point is 00:08:44 You send him down, let him play every day and prove that he's worth it. We're going to talk about the sweep next. sweep of the breads. Good teams make the most out of their opponent's failures, and that was something that Cardinals took advantage of over and over and over again in this series. We'll get to it next on Locked on Cardinals. The biggest stage in world soccer is here, and every match feels like it has the potential for a memorable moment. One goal can completely change the energy of a game, shifts momentum, and alters the outcome in an instant. Starting point is 00:12:43 There wasn't any of these games. Well, the first one was a blowout. But the next two, I mean, it's not like the Cardinals were dominating and it just felt like they were the way better team than the Reds. But good teams. find ways to win despite not always playing at their highest level. And how they do that is by taking advantage of other teams' weaknesses. Expose them, pounce on those opportunities,
Starting point is 00:13:11 and that's exactly what the cardals were able to do over the weekend. On Friday night, they fell behind early, but took advantage of the Reds defense in bullpen, who just were unable to throw strikes at one point. Three errors by Cincinnati, they sent 12 batters to the plate in that sixth inning after taking a four. to one lead and made the most of four walks and a hip batter and blow the game open with six runs. It wasn't a very efficient night by the offense at all, but they scored 10 runs despite
Starting point is 00:13:39 going three of 17 with a runner in scoring position and leaving 12 runners on base thanks to plate discipline and drawing nine walks in the game. Something I brought up at the end of last week was the Cardinals' lack of walks compared to how they started the season. And you see what happens when you don't chase, when you aren't overly aggressive, how that can lead to some crooked numbers despite the lack of production with runners in scoring position. Now, Leahy wasn't great, but Dobbins came on. It was outstanding, shutting out the Reds over the final five innings
Starting point is 00:14:13 to get his first win with the Cardinals. And he did enough that he isn't going anywhere anytime soon. He's taking on the sixth rotation spot. He's scheduled to get to start on Thursday in New York against the Mets. Saturday, they think. took an opposite field hitting approach that yielded five singles and a three to nothing lead. But this time it was the Reds coming back thanks to some walks by Libby and an error on Alec Berlison at first. Libby was coming off a great start against Chicago, but he ends up going
Starting point is 00:14:43 just four and a third innings. He allows five runs. Only three of them are earned. He walks three, four strikeouts. But in his last five starts, the team is three and two, which is good. but the ERA for Libby is at 5.18, although he does have 32 strikeouts in 24 and a third inning. So room to improve for sure. Cardinals trailed 5 to 4 in the eighth inning when Lars Neupar played the hero, which was awesome to see, launching his first home running in just what, his second game since rejoining the team from the I. Al had a big impact on the game on Friday. And then on Saturday, he came off the bench, got intentionally walked.
Starting point is 00:15:17 But in the 8th, he goes yard to give the Cardinals that six to five lead. see the Lars Newpar energy and excitement once again. That was huge. Riley O'Brien, again, gets us all sweaty and hot and bothered, but for all the wrong reasons in that ninth inning. But Jimmy Crooks plays ABS Hero. You know, you're getting something from everybody here. He plays ABS Hero by turning the ball four game-tying walk into strike two against
Starting point is 00:15:44 South Stewart before O'Brien induces that ground ball to end the game. Gordon Grecepho, Ryan Stanning. George Soriano. They combined to work three and two-thirds scoreless innings before O'Brien earned that save 16th of the season. So shout out to the bullpen. Did very good. Jordan Walker, two for four, including his 16th finger of the season,
Starting point is 00:16:03 matching his career high in a season. Dude is having a monster year, a monster year. Team went four for 10 with runners in scoring position. They left seven on, but had another basis loaded nobody out situation and got nothing from it. And that is something that they would do on Sunday, which was very frustrating. And it's really starting to become annoying.
Starting point is 00:16:25 But it's not like they're not trying to get hits there. But at the same time, you're like, bro, can we just get one? But they get the win. They get the win. And that's ultimately what is most important. That takes us to Sunday, where Michael McGreevy got the ball after losing a tough two to one ball game last time out against Texas. This time around, he allows two runs on back-to-back solo home runs in the third,
Starting point is 00:16:47 which is very rare, but it happened, to give the reds a two to nothing. nothing lead. Both of them just snuck into the first rows there. But still, home runs, you know, and in a big ballpark. So not something that is completely normal, especially when you see the guys who hit him like Matt McLean and Tyler Stevenson. But it happened. But the bats were able to wake up in that fifth inning, Alec Berluson and Jordan Walker, they get those back-to-back doubles as soon as the reds had to get into their bullpen because they made Rhett louder throw so many pitches over those first few winnings. So they get in there. Chris Paddock comes in and back-to-back doubles makes it two to one one out later.
Starting point is 00:17:23 It's Brian Torres, launching a two-run home run to right field to give the birds of three to lead. That's Torres' second home run of the season. Both of those have come against the Reds, which is always nice to deal it against the division opponent. McGreevy goes six settings, two runs, five hits, but a rare not so good appearance by George Sorriano, who's been a big surprise this year, has been excellent. He gets eliminated from the decision.
Starting point is 00:17:46 McGruey does because Soriano gets tagged for three hits, including that solo home run by Matt McLean to tied up in the seventh inning. But then the Cardinals once again take advantage of the red shabby bullpen and shabby defense in that eighth inning. The Reds go to their lefty, mole who gave up the dinger to Newt in the game on Saturday. For Mene gets the single. Again, had a really good series. Velasquez comes off the bench, gets a single as well. And that's when Victor Scott comes in, lays down the bun. that should have resulted in and out in third base. He got it a little too close to the pitcher.
Starting point is 00:18:21 It wasn't right down the line, but he put it down and they had to make a play. And they didn't. They threw the ball wide, sales wide, go ahead, run scores. Two batterers later, Matt McLean couldn't handle the short hop on a ground ball by Yvonne Herrera with the bases loaded. That scores another unearned run.
Starting point is 00:18:37 That makes it five to three. And I'm glad they got those runs. Like I'm not unhappy about it. That's not what I'm saying here. but again, it's another basis loaded. Nobody out situation. The Cardinals cannot get a fly ball. Like on Saturday,
Starting point is 00:18:53 they pinch it with Jimmy Crooks. Crooks immediately grounds into the double play. And the Cardinals do very little with that situation. Should have been at least one, if not two outs on the Herrera Grounder, who is pounding a lot of balls into the, into the dirt lately. But, you know, is what it is. Burley grounds out of second base. That was a nice plate second by Arroyo.
Starting point is 00:19:13 It wasn't easy, but, uh, That was a ground ball. And then Walker grounds the short before Newt flies out to end the inning. So that's three of your best hitters, pounding it into the ground with the bases loaded. And that's after Crooks did it the day before. So not ideal. Credit to the Reds pitchers at the time. I forget who was thrown on Saturday, but it was Santion on Sunday,
Starting point is 00:19:34 who was able to get all those ground balls now in their defense, because the Cardals do have the second best average in the league with the base is juiced. but a rough couple days in that situation. So it's got to be pointed out. Ollie goes back to Riley O'Brien, who allows the double to Stevenson, but got a couple flyouts to end it and completing the first series sweep
Starting point is 00:19:54 for the Cardinals at home this season and their first against the Reds at Bush Stadium since 2021. Reds made six errors in the series. Cardinals drew 19 walks. That's what I like to see. We're out the Reds Bowl Bowl. Warm out.
Starting point is 00:20:08 Score a combined 13 runs and 12 innings against them. They found their weaknesses, used it against them. that's what good teams do. It's what they do. We'll go through the standings, the power rankings and preview this week coming up next on Lockdown Cardinals. Hey, it's Mike and John from Lockdown Angels. Cardinals win six of nine during the homestand. Nice. They've won four in a row. They're now 35 and 28 on the season. in which has them in second place in the division, trailing the Brewers by five games.
Starting point is 00:21:52 But the Brewers have been just absolutely on fire, by the way. But in the grand scheme of things, this is where things are really surprising. Seeing the Cardinals is second place, yeah, that's surprising. But the Cardinals now had the fourth best winning percentage in the National League. Who the hell saw that coming? They've got the sixth best winning percentage in Major League Baseball. Nobody. And I mean, nobody saw any of this coming.
Starting point is 00:22:15 Only the Braves, Dodgers, Brewers, Reaves and Yanke. are above them in Major League Baseball. That's crazy. And it kind of shows you the diversity in this league. We've got this labor disagreement that's happening and everybody's talking about the strike next year and how there needs to be, you know, a salary cap or a salary floor. And there's arguments for everything in between. And it is what it is. But you look at how the standings are right now. It's kind of nuts. You know, you've got Braves, Dodgers, Yankees, big cities, big payrolls. But then you've got the Brewers, the Raises, and the Cardinals doing it differently.
Starting point is 00:22:52 Smaller markets, very low payrolls, and basically relying on youth and player development to get it done. So there are different ways to win. Now, would you think that the Brewers, Razor Cardinals would beat the Braves, Dodgers, or Yankees in World Series? Like, if that's how it ended up, no, you would never pick that. But you never know what's going to happen. Anything going to happen once you get on the field in between those white lines. So how did that affect the newest power rankings? Well, the Cardinals did jump up.
Starting point is 00:23:20 Braves are still one, Dodgers at two, Brewer's still at three, the Yankees at four. Guardians go from five to six, go from, wait, go to five from six. So they scooted up a spot. Ray slide back to spot to six. Mariners are at seven. Phillies go from nine to eight.
Starting point is 00:23:39 White Sox go from number 12 to number nine. And then the Cardinals go from 13 to 10. And the only little blurb they said about it was just like, hey, Jordan Walker, one of the worst players in 2025, now one of the best in 2026. Everybody should be able to get behind this guy. And I absolutely understand that. Now, it might upset you a little bit considering where the record is. Like, how are the Cardinals only a 10, but they have the sixth best record in Major League Baseball? And my response to that is, who cares? Who cares? I don't. If you stay under the radar all season and keep winning, I could care less. You can rank them 30th. I don't care. The Cardinals don't have what the national media would consider star power type names, although Jordan Walker is starting to push that
Starting point is 00:24:28 envelope, but they've been able to avoid any massive losing streaks. They've only, you know, where it's like six, seven in a row. They haven't had to fall into that trap yet. And they continue to show resiliency in games with their ability to come back and win. You know, the Braves have got 23 comeback wins this year. The Diamondbacks got 21. And then it's the Dodgers. and the Cardinals at 19. So that's pretty awesome to be mentioned among, you know, the Braves and the Dodgers once again. And I feel like the Diamondbacks have a solid team.
Starting point is 00:24:58 That's, I never thought that they were going to be something that was not good, almost made the playoffs last year. So I think it's great. I think it's way, you can't tell me you're not having fun watching this team. It's like annoying as it can get from time to time with Thurterson's scoring position or Riley O'Brien in the last month where, it just feels like every single time he comes out there, there is drama. Again, Ryan Helsley 2.0 going on here where it's like, we know he's good, but for whatever reason, somebody always gets on base. There's always a walk, there's always a hit, something like that. And there's always got to be drama. But more times than not, they're coming out on top in these situations. And a lot of that, you know, give credit to manager Ali Marble, who has been excellent this year and some really cool news about Ali, whether you like him or not, you still have to respect this. He's going to be one of the NL coaches at the all. star game next month as a member of Dave Roberts coaching staff.
Starting point is 00:25:51 That's awesome that Dave Roberts has recognized him. Look, this guy's doing a really good job and he should be rewarded for this. And, you know, there's no saying that this team won't slide at one point and then fall out of contention. But as of right now, he's got him playing very good and they're way up where most people think they don't belong. So great stuff by Ali Marmal. Voting for the All-Star game available now. And Thornton Walker obviously should be there no matter what. He's one of the best sitters in baseball right now. Will anyone else from this team make it? Argument can be made for Burley.
Starting point is 00:26:33 Because once again, he's quietly having an excellent year at the plate, just like he did last year when he won the Silver Slugger. This year, obviously, he's a first baseman, so competition's tough. but he's hitting 290. That leads all NL first baseman and batting average. He's got 43 RBI second among NL first baseman behind only Matt Olson of the Braves. But then you think about who else plays first base in the National League and Rice Harper's there. Freddie Freeman is there. Greg Olson is there.
Starting point is 00:27:01 Like how is Alec Berluson going to get votes above any of those three? Probably not going to happen. But he deserves to be talked about in the in the conversation as far as All-Stars 4. the National League. The boys have the day off today on Monday. They're in New York to face the Mets from Tuesday through Thursday, and then they go to Minnesota to face the twins over the weekend. Neither one of these teams have winning records. Mets are 29 and 36 on the year, but have won seven of their last 10, sweeping the Marlins, losing two of three to Seattle and winning two of three from the Padres, Minnesota. 30 and 37, I believe. They've lost a couple in a row.
Starting point is 00:27:38 Byron Buxton's their big star, and he's been banged up the last couple of a day, so he hasn't been in the lineup. But yeah, these are two series that I know the Mets, on paper the Mets should be better, right? And they've been playing better, which sucks that the Cardinals have to face them now when they're actually playing much better and they got Juan Soto back. But record-wise, you say, yeah, the Cardinals should be able to beat them in this series. And the same with Minnesota. Dusta May is set to go against Freddie Peralta, which we know has been very good
Starting point is 00:28:11 against the Cardinals in recent years. That'll be Tuesday night's game, Palante versus Christian Scott on Wednesday night. And then on Thursday, Hunter Dobbins will make that start. And as of right now, officially, TBD for the Mets. So that's what's coming up for the team this week. Ugly shirt, good to have it back. I did wash it finally.
