Starting point is 00:00:00 Spring camp is almost here with 27 outsiders vying for a spot. A shakeup could be coming to the Cardinals roster. Find out which surprising names might force their way in right now on Locked on Cardinals. You are Locked on Cardinals. Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. Hey there, Cardinals fans. I'm J.D. Hafford, a former national radio sports anchor born and raised in St. Louis and a lifetime Cardinals fan. And welcome to another episode of Locked on Cardinals.
Starting point is 00:00:35 is part of the lockdown podcast network, now the number one sports podcast network. Thank you to our everydayers for always being here with us. And thank you to you who might be new to the show. Welcome in. Hope you enjoy the content. This is a show that serves Cardinal Nation and gives you all the info about the birds on the bat. Today's show we're going to discuss, I know you're probably getting tired of hearing about Brennan Donovan, but we got to talk about him in a good way.
Starting point is 00:00:58 Where did he land among the top second baseman in baseball? Might be surprised where he is. We are going to focus today on non-raster invites. I know. We're like, wait, what are we doing? Non-raster invites for spring training this year. We're going to talk about this and what their impact could be on the team this season. Now, the first thing you might be asking is what the hell is a non-raster invitee?
Starting point is 00:01:22 There's a lot of different titles and jargon that is used in baseball. Sometimes it's kind of tough to keep up. So I don't feel bad. That's what we're here for. It's why I have a job. Non-raster invitee. someone who is currently not on the 40 man roster already, but is either good enough or important enough in the org to get a look at during spring training
Starting point is 00:01:44 to see if they could possibly earn a roster spot and also provide some depth, some much needed depth during the spring when healthy bodies are sorely needed. You're going to have a lot of guys go down with, you know, different injuries, arm injuries, sore muscles, you know, you're not trying to get people hurt out here. So you want to have as many capable bodies as possible. So hence why, I think it's at 67 guys that are on the roster right now. It's usually a mix of young talent and it's already in the organization that they want to look at, as well as veterans, who are either trying to make a new club or at least trying to get their name back out there for other teams that might be interested in their services moving forward.
Starting point is 00:02:25 Every dayers are going to recognize some of these lesser no names for, for, I don't know when I, say casual fans, but some of these guys, if you've been here listening to Lockdown Cardinals, you've heard these names before. We brought them up when they were either signed this offseason. Many of these guys are going to be our just prospects that we've been keeping tabs on since they joined the Cardinals. So before we get into the list of the non-roster guys, let's take a look back at the 40-man roster again so that you don't get confused. These are the guys who are signed to major league contracts, which includes the active 26-man roster, the injured list guys, and some minor leaguers as well.
Starting point is 00:03:06 These are the guys that can be called up. And if you remember, we're also protected from the Rule 5 draft. So you heard us talk about, you know, at the catcher position, they added Leonardo Bernal, who was just added to the 40-man this off-season. So that was a big deal because they're very excited about his future. We think that he's going to end up starting in Memphis this year. You've got Jimmy Crooks, Joel Pozo, Pedro Pahas, and then even, Don Herrera on the infield, Alec Burleson, Britta Donovan, Jose Fermin, Nolan Gorman, Cesar Prieto, Thomas Cajie, and Mason Winn.
Starting point is 00:03:40 In the outfield, you've got Joshua Baez, who hasn't played above AA yet, but got added to the 40 man. People are very excited about him. He ended up cracking the top 100 M.LB pipeline prospects as well as baseball America's top 100 list. So that was a big deal. Nathan Church, who we got a peek at last year in the pros, Lars Newfarr, Victor Scott the 2nd, Brian Torres, who could become a sneaky utility guy this year if he pops off in the spring after a strong year at Memphis. You only wish he bad at right-handed. He's another left-handed bat.
Starting point is 00:04:12 And then Jordan Walker rounds out the outfielders pitching wise. A lot of new faces have come on board. New lefty, Justin Brule, new righty, Hunter Dobbins, Ryan Fernandez is back. New righty, Richard Fitz, Gordon Grecoffo, Andre Greenio, Tink Hintz, Cooper Jerpy, Lehi, Matthew Libertor, a reigning Cardinal Minor League pitcher. of the year, Bryson Mott, New Ritey Dustin May, Michael McGruevy, Riley O'Brien, Andre Palante is back, Roll 5 draftee from Miami, Matt Pushart, Nick Rockett, injured righty to Covey, Jojo Romero, Chris Roycroft, New Ritey, Ryan Stanick, and Matt Sponson.
Starting point is 00:04:48 Now, here's the non-raster invites, and we're going to begin with the eight players who were acquired this offseason or after the start of last season. You've got right-handed pitchers, Scott Blewett. I know terrible name for a pitcher, but he's made it to the pros. Right-handed pitcher, Skyler Hales, right-hand of pitcher Gerson Moreno, left-hand of pitcher Jared Schuster, and left-handed pitcher Bruce Zimmerman. Position players, you have got first basement Blaise Jordan, who they got for Stephen Mats last year, outfielder Nelson Velasquez, and catcher Andy Yerzy. Now, your catchers, if we go position by position here, Yerzy, who they signed last spring. Carlos
Starting point is 00:05:31 Linares, who was with Springfield mostly last year, and then Grayson Tarlow, who spent time at both Peoria and Springfield. So those are the three catchers that were non-raster invites. Let's go infielders. You've got top prospect.
Starting point is 00:05:47 Well, let's put a picture of him of. JJ Weatherholt. My man. Can't wait to see him. So you got JJ, Blaze Jordan, again, Stephen Matt's. Remote Mendoza, hit 14 dingers, drove in 62. at Springfield. Brody Moore split time at Springfield in Memphis last year, Jeremy Revis, who stole 21 bases at Springfield. Your outfielders include friend of the show, Mike Antico,
Starting point is 00:06:11 who drove in 57 and stole 21 bags at Memphis. Former first round pick, Chase Davis, who still hasn't quite developed into the hitter they thought he'd be. This will be his third full year pro ball. Matt Coperniac, you know, his story where he had that big 2024 season. A lot of People were excited about him last year. They were like, oh, Gopernia could be, you know, a sneaky guy that could do some damage in the outfield for the Cardinals. Didn't work out. Things went the wrong way. He regressed last year down at Memphis.
Starting point is 00:06:40 So they're hoping he'll have a bounce back season. And then you've got Nelson Velasquez, who has some big league experience at 17 home runs with the Cubs and Royals back in 2020. We're going to talk more about him later. 15 pitchers got invited. Scott Blewitt, who was with the twins, Orioles and Braves last year. Luis Gastilum, who had 10. saves at Springfield last season. Skyler Hales, who they got in the film Aiton deal with Texas. Lefty Pete Hanson, who won eight games with Springfield last year.
Starting point is 00:07:06 Eishon Henderson won nine games at Springfield last year. He was very impressive. Austin Love, former third round pick, won six games with a 2.41 ERA in 41 appearances out of the bullpen for Springfield. Quinn Matthews, minor league pitcher of the year in 2024. Gerson Moreno, 30 years old, but 1.23 ERA at Memphis and 14 appearances. Packy Naughton is back. The naughty one, Packy Naughton, remember him? He's back at it. Max Ratchick, Cardinals Binnelly League pitcher of the year in 2023.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Hansel Rincones, split time with Peoria and Springfield, Sim Robbersa. He's still rehabbing after Tommy John's surgery last year, but should return at some point this season. Lefty, Jared Schuster, former first round pick by Atlanta in 2020. Lefty, Zach Thompson, former first rounder by the Cardinals, who had just a ton of bad luck with the injuries. He's trying to make it back again. And Bruce Zimmerman, the lefty that was on the Brewers 40 man last year, that's kind of your group.
Starting point is 00:08:08 That's what we're looking at. Now, one notable name that is missing from this list. You're like, okay, everything sounds good, but wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, who else are we missing here? Hello, Liam Doyle? Where are you? That's a big name. Number two prospect on the Cardinals list.
Starting point is 00:08:24 He's one of the top prospects, left-handed pitching prospects, and all the baseball. Did not get an invite, but this is on purpose because the team wants him as Daniel Guerrero, our buddy over at STL today.com, wrote he, they want to put him in a spring setting that will allow him to focus on building up for his first full minor league season and avoid any distractions that may come with a big league camp setting. So they're just kind of holding them back a little bit for his own good. But obviously there's a chance that Liam Doyle flies up the system again this
Starting point is 00:08:57 year. I would suspect he starts at double A, then graduates to get up to AAA. Maybe at the end of the season, you see him in some capacity at the Major League level. But that's if everything goes great. So that's not always the case. So which of these guys from the non-raster side, if any, should you put like a little checkmark next to as a person of interest this spring? I'm going to give you a couple of those names coming up next on Locktown Cardinals. Let's be real. Managing your finances can feel overwhelming between subscriptions. So when it comes to the Cardinals 26-man active roster, there isn't a ton of wiggle room for spots when everyone is healthy, which doesn't always happen, obviously. You know, as of now, you've still got Britt and Donovan with the team. So it was Newt, so was Jojo.
Starting point is 00:11:54 So we'll have them as a part of this 26-man roster. until something changes. You can't keep pretending that they're not there because they are. Kid Rosenthal actually mentioned on Tuesday that he still thinks something gets done with Donnie before opening day. But we'll see. It feels like the momentum has kind of slowing down on a deal for Britain Donovan. But it doesn't mean it's dead. And obviously, Hyne Bloom's the phone lines are wide open.
Starting point is 00:12:22 He's still listening and waiting to see if somebody will meet his demands. The real opportunities, though, are for, like, bench bats and bullpen arms, you know, JJ Weatherholt should be on this team at some point. If it's not opening day, it's going to be sooner rather than later during the season, barring anything as far as injuries or something. But you know this by now. We've talked about it a lot. If you haven't been paying attention to them, then shame on you.
Starting point is 00:12:47 That's your fault because he's got to be on this team eventually. But a 40-man spot, think about this, though. A 40-man spot is going to have to open up to add him. him and bring him up. So keep that in mind. Somebody's going to have to get cut to get him on the 40 man. So I don't know who that's going to be. Of the position players, it is safe to say that you can cross off the three catchers that we mentioned. Cardinals already got five on the 40 man roster that are ahead of those guys, the catching position, deep, strong, which we like because you want to be strong up the middle and having a solid base there at catcher with all of those guys is fantastic.
Starting point is 00:13:25 It's a great problem to have. Infielders, you got JJ, but the rest of them, they really do have a long way to go. Blaze Jordan, I guess, is the closest since he spent last year at AAA and is also a power hitting right-handed bat, which is something the Cardinals soarly need. It's some pop in that lineup. Ramo Mendoza, yet a nice year. Double A should make the jump to Memphis, but we'll see what he can do at the next level. Can't really count on him to be something that's going to impact the roster right away.
Starting point is 00:13:53 the outfielders, you've got the veteran minor leaguers, as I like to call them, in Antico and Coperniac. The biggest thing going against them is that both of them are left-handed, which is a bummer because if they had those numbers and they were flipped, you would feel a little bit better about what they, their chances, I should say, to getting up to the big leagues, you know, if they were swinging it from the right side or just hit lefties better. You don't have to be right-handed to hit a left-hand or good, but that's kind of their dilemma. know the Cardinals have a lot of those left-handed hitters in the big leagues already. Chase Davis, former first round pick, also left-handed, hasn't shown that he's really even close
Starting point is 00:14:34 to being Major League ready, which is a bit of a bummer. And sadly, you know, I hate to use the B word already, but we're starting to look at that. His trajectory is this, is he a bust? Is this a bust of a pick from the first round? 21 home runs in his last year in Arizona, which was fantastic. It was a hell of a hitter in college. And he was 21 then. It's not like we're talking about a high schooler. Three minor league seasons later,
Starting point is 00:15:01 he has just 22 home runs total as a pro. So the power we saw in college has not transitioned the way we thought it would to pro ball into the wooden bats. And he's now 24 years old. So this is going to be a big year for him and his future. Now, we did see a guy like Joshua Baez, who struggled early on.
Starting point is 00:15:21 Again, he was coming from high school. school though. So development-wise, he's well behind where Chase Davis should be. And he was able to put things together this past year and now is a top 100 prospect. Could things turn around for Chase Davis? Sure. Sure, they could. But this is going to be a big year for him. So that leaves you with Nelson Velasquez, who he's an interesting guy because he did find some success in the major leagues back in 2023, which feels like a million years ago, but it happened when he made his royals debut. Now, he was good because he came up with the Cups.
Starting point is 00:15:56 That's where he started. Ends up going to the Royals, debuts on August 10th with them. And from that day, when he put on a Kansas City uniform, through the season's end, his 14 home runs actually tied for second most in the American league behind Aaron Frickin Judge,
Starting point is 00:16:14 who had 16. So when you're keeping up with Aaron, in anything offensively, that's pretty good. By the way, Aaron Judd, is a new cover boy for MLB the show 26, which is well deserved. I thought that was cool. I've been still playing MLB 25.
Starting point is 00:16:31 My hands are sore because I've just been playing late nights and stuff. So anyway, in fact, I'm talking about Velazquez again. Let me get back on track here. Made his first start with the Royals on August 11th in 2020. This was like his first start. Actually came against the Cardinals.
Starting point is 00:16:46 And he became the fifth player in Royals history to hit a home run in his first plate appearance with the club when he took Adam Wainwright deep. Now this was a shell of the Adam Wainwright that we know. This was 2023 when Adam Wainwright was just trying to get 200 wins and was just beat up and injured and was getting crushed by just about everybody. But he also took Stephen Matsyard in the next game. So he's got poppy. Look at his tape. His swing reminds me a lot of another former Cardinal in Marcelo Zuna.
Starting point is 00:17:14 He was in the Mexican League at one point last year where he's, We hit 357 with 15 home runs and 57 RBIs in 49 games. So obviously the level of competition probably not that good there. The pirates ended up grabbing him and some of the AAA Indianapolis. And he hit pretty well there. 284 or five dingers, 17 rivis and 18 games. They did not call him up at the end of the season. And the Cardinals were able to sign him to a minor league deal.
Starting point is 00:17:40 They're going to try to catch lightning in a bottle here, right? To see if, hey, can this work, man, has the adjustment you've made. He's 27 years old now. He's not some old man, but he's not some young kid. He doesn't know what he's doing anymore. Can these adjustments that he's made help him out and become somebody that the Cardinals will find useful? It's doubtful. I don't want to blow smoke up your butt here and gave you false hope that this is.
Starting point is 00:18:06 Here he is. Here's the guy that's going to make all the difference and bring that pop you've been looking for. Well, there's a possibility. Thanks to that power he possesses. And sadly, the lack of power. that is currently in the cardinal system. So he is definitely somebody to watch the spring to see if can he do something to stand out. So we'll find out.
Starting point is 00:18:28 The starting rotation has got a lot of names that already make up six or seven spots. So the real question is, will anyone stand out to make a push for a bullpen spot as far as the non-raster guys? Quinn Matthews, Ishaun Henderson, Max Ratchik, they're depth guys for the rotation. you know, if something happens, heaven forbid, the guys that are on the big league roster, these are your next guys in line, but they aren't going to the bullpen. So we don't have to really worry about them.
Starting point is 00:18:56 They're starting rotation people. Scott Blewett has got major league experience. But personally, I'd rather see someone like Austin Love or Luis Gastilum get a real crack at making the 40 man over somebody like Scott Blewett. Like Scott Blewett feels like he's just kind of a bod. that obviously has been to the pros, has pitched in the pros,
Starting point is 00:19:18 been with a number of teams. There's something about them that people like. But where the Cardinals are, I'd rather see that time and that spot go to a younger guy. And, you know, Gastilum is somebody who impressed us in the spring last year, was not in Big League camp last year, but we did get to see him because, again,
Starting point is 00:19:42 the first time I saw him, I remember the hair, and I was like, whoa, whoa, I kind of like this dude. Like, what's he doing? You go look at the stats. 92Ks and 62 and two-thirds innings last year at AA, thanks to that wicked change-up. And I mentioned this last week when we had Tyler on from Redbird Farmhands, you know, so many guys, it's all about Velo.
Starting point is 00:20:01 They're throwing triple-digit smoke nowadays, and they're just coming at you, throwing it as hard as they possibly can, and have somebody out in the bullpen that's a wrinkle like gas alone. That could be huge. You know, think of it. them the way that, you know, a guy like Tommy Canley has been used over the years in the big leagues who has been a very, has been a very prosperous and good career throwing mostly changes. Could be a real weapon. Austin Love had his career derailed by injuries, but came back
Starting point is 00:20:32 in a major way last year with Springfield. Jeff Jones from the Business News Democrat points out our Belved, why don't we always say business, Belleville News Democrat, pointed out that his strikeout rate wasn't nearly as impressive as Gastilums, but he two features a standout pitch. He's got a wipeout slider that absolutely just befuddled Ritey's all season long. Same handed hitters put up just a 106 batting average against Love in 2025, which Jones says, he was going to draw attention. And you hear Heim, when you hear the interviews with Heim Bloom,
Starting point is 00:21:06 and he always brings up players superpowers. You know, what is it about that guy that that makes sense? them stand out. What's special about him. Some of these guys will have great velo. others got the sweepers or the curve falls. Gastilums is a change-up. Love has a slider. And those are unique pitches to them, which is something that you want in the bullpen because you want things to look different when these guys are coming out of the pen. You don't want it to look like the same stuff that you've been seeing from the starting rotation people. And then you got Gerson Moreno, who at age 30, right, has found some things to
Starting point is 00:21:43 click and one of them is he found the strike zone. He quit walking people, which was a huge problem for him. 1.23 ERA and 14 appearances for Memphis and in the Dominican Winter League at a 1.86 ERA in 24 appearances. So there's something there, something to build upon. Can he make a dead? Can he do enough to stand out at camp? That's going to be on him. From the left side, it's kind of a crapshoot, really. Packing non-Zacken, Zach Thompson, guys that have been in the big leagues with the Cardinals before. They're trying to return from injuries. They had success in the big leagues with the Cardinals too. So that's not something that's been forgotten. Jared Schuster, first round pick in Atlanta. That's an organization that's normally really,
Starting point is 00:22:29 really good at judging pitching talent, has bounced around since leaving Atlanta. But they took him in the first round for a reason. Can the Cardinals unlock whatever has vanished from his game? the last couple seasons. Bruce Zimmerman, guy that feels more like a AAA depth guy than anything, but 39 appearances, 28 starts in the majors under his belt. So if need be, he's somebody that, again, another depth piece. But I wouldn't imagine that he makes much of an impact to be on the major league roster at all. But, you know, he's somebody that you can let do his thing down at triple lane. If you need somebody in a spot start, boom, you got a Bruce Zimmerman. Personally, As far as the left side of these guys, I don't trust any of these options, really.
Starting point is 00:23:16 And as cool as it was to have Nick Rockette up on the team last year, I still am holding out for my dudes Danny Kallum or Andrew Chafin. I want to see them. If Jojo Romero is going to be on this team, I would like to see one of those to join Romero out there. At least those guys have some worth recently in the big leagues and aren't coming off major injuries. In fact, Colom was just listed on MLB's all underrated team, despite being unsigned.
Starting point is 00:23:42 Still a free agent. They did mention that he was dealing with some shoulder fatigue last year. So maybe that's why he's still unsigned because he's been pretty darn good for quite a while. And I don't know. It's just somebody that I think would fit what the Cardinals are looking for. Either way, there's no way that he or Chafin are really going to cost you all that much. We're talking one-year deals, two to three million dollars. But that's just me.
Starting point is 00:24:07 That's just me. So in a nutshell, JJ coming at some point. Belasquez. Interesting, offensively is a lottery ticket. Gastilum, love Moreno, from the right side for the bullpen. Should be guys that I would monitor if I were you. Keep an eye on those names and we'll see how the, how the things work out for them and shake out when they get spring training. Pitchers and catchers guys hold their first practice at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium Complex on Thursday, February 12th, with the first full squad workout scheduled for Monday, February 16th. We are just a couple of weeks away, a couple of weeks. Britt and Donovan, still on this team, even though we're a couple of weeks away, recently ranked among the top second baseman in baseball.
Starting point is 00:24:50 How high was he? You're going to find out next coming up on Lockdown Cardinals. Thanks for making Lockdown, Carlos, your first list of the day. Thank you for making Lockdown on the number one sports podcast network. So Bernard Donovan continues to be an underrated asset for the Cardinals, and more proof of that came recently when MLB Network released their top 10 second baseman list. They're going through every position and, you know, giving you who they think the best ones are.
Starting point is 00:25:24 They also did a cool thing with Rick Ankeel about like his all Cardinals team and stuff. So that was really cool to go through. There's so much talent has been in the St. Louis Cardinals organization over the years. And it's just like, wow, look at this. Just all star, Hall of Famer, Hall of Famer, All-Aver, All-Star, Hall of Famer, All-Star, Hall of Fame. Just so many to go through. Bernard Donovan, an All-Star last year. Where was he on the list of second baseman in all of Major League Baseball?
Starting point is 00:25:49 not just in the Cardinal system, but among all second baseman in Major League Baseball, number one went to the Diamondbacks Catel Marte. Makes a lot of sense. He's really freaking good. Number two, Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Yankees. Number three, Nico Horner from the Cubs. And then coming in at number four, our guy, Brennan Donovan. That's right.
Starting point is 00:26:11 Vernon, fourth, best second baseman in all of baseball, ahead of the Mets Marcus Simeon, the Astros Jose Altuve, Detroit's Glabar Torres, the Marlon Xavier Edwards, the Pirates Brandon Lau, and Milwaukee's Bryce Terang, which I am shocked that Bryce Terang was number 10 on this list. Because I think that dude is a superstar in the making. Absolute stud. Would love to have him on my team if it was even a remote podcast. possibility. I love that dude. But that's pretty darn impressive for Brin and Donovan when you say.
Starting point is 00:26:52 Now, you can argue that he should be lower. Sure, you can do that despite what other teams say in social media, despite what other hosts may think of Donathan's abilities. Clearly, Donnie is one of the best of the business. He just is. And it also proves once again that Heim Bloom should be asking for a lot for him in a trade. I mean, you got him as the number four. second baseman in the league, why wouldn't you ask for the moon to get that guy with two years of control? You should be. And like I mentioned earlier, Ken Rosenthalp thinks that he will still get moved before opening day. Jim Bowden from the athletic has him on his list of guys who should get moved and probably will get moved before opening day. But who's ready to bite?
Starting point is 00:27:40 Boston is still there. Boston continues to feel like a desperate place that is just like, we got to do this and we got to do that. I mean, they've lost Bregman. They didn't get Boba's yet. They've already made two trades with the Cardinals. They just feel like they're a little bit desperate, don't they? So I would keep an eye on that. The Mariners still seem like a fit,
Starting point is 00:28:00 but I feel like there's just not the urgency. Like they just don't, they're not as impressed with Bernard Donovan as we are. So I don't think they have the urgency to give up what the Cardinals want. And they want to hold on to their assets. So that's fine. you can do that. That's your prerogative. But if you're that close to being a World Series team, man, I'm moving. If I got, I got those prospects and my pool of talent is that deep, I would certainly sacrifice a prospect or two in exchange for a better chance in a World Series this year. The Giants appear to still be interested. That's another name that continues to pop up. You know, you'd hate to have this drag on, camp, but maybe it takes an injury to someone to get these teams to finally give in to Heinbloom's demands. Maybe that's what it's going to take. Let's just hope on our side that
Starting point is 00:28:56 Donovan isn't somebody who gets hurt or has any issues, which would ruin this whole setup that we've got going. And then you've got to wait even longer because you're probably wait until the trade deadline at that point. But, no, no, let's hope he stays healthy. If he's back again, I'm cool with it. If he gets traded, I understand it. And I understand why the standards are so high and why Haim Bloom's asking for so much. So there you go. They're supposed to be doing short stops tonight, by the way.
