Starting point is 00:00:00 The New York Yankees are here, and this weekend is another chance, yet another chance for the Cardinals to either take a step forward or bury themselves deeper in the grave. So the Cardinals got a much needed day off on Thursday and not because they should be all that tired or worn out. More, I think it's for the mental side of things after crapping the bed against the Colorado Rockies for the second time this year. I still not. I can't I believe they lost four games of these guys.
Starting point is 00:01:37 The Burns probably needed a good 24 hours to, you know, get their heads out of their butts and, uh, and refocus and get back on track. I know a lot of fans do not believe in this team right now. And why should you? I get it. I get it. But the facts remain that with 40 games to go,
Starting point is 00:01:55 the Cardinals are sitting at 61 and 61. And they're three and a half back in the wild card and can still make a push for a playoff spot. It's real. they're still there. Is it realistic? No, not really. You know, this team has only shown us that they were, you know,
Starting point is 00:02:14 a winning team, that they were capable of being a winning team in the month of May. When they somehow went 19 and 8, we were all very excited about that. But that feels like it was a million years ago. And to make things even more confusing, it's that the teams that they have good records against are a little bit surprising. You know, they've beaten some very good teams this year. They're four and two against the Phillies. The Phillies are 69 and 52 in time for the second best record in baseball.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Like, like they're really freaking good. The Dodgers, let me double check that. In all of baseball, let me double check this just to be sure. Because when I was putting this together, because obviously, you know, the Brewers, are a disgusting team right now at 76 and 44. Let's just double check this. I'll triple check it for you. Okay.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Second best in the national week. All right. Blue Jays and Tigers with 71 wins apiece. Then it's the Philly. So yeah, so I misspoke there. All right. But back on track here. They're very good, bottom line.
Starting point is 00:03:27 So second best record in the national league. Dodgers, four and two against the Dodgers this year. Dodgers are 68 and 53 on the season, currently residing in the second wild card spot. And one game back of the Padres in the NOS, they have not played all that great here in the second half of the season, but they're still the Dodgers, and they still got all that star power.
Starting point is 00:03:48 The Cardinals are 3 and O against the Cleveland Guardians, who for a while there, it didn't sound like they were going to be a very good team, right? They lost their closer, the Emmanuel Claisse, and that starter, Luis Ortiz, to gambling investigations, They lost 10 in a row at one point. That was also when the Cardinals, you know, took advantage of them, beat them in Cleveland, three straight. But all of the sudden, the Guardians are now 63 and 57 and just a half game back in the AOL Wild Card.
Starting point is 00:04:18 They're two and one against the Houston Astros. The Astros are 68 and 53, have a game and a half lead over the surging Seattle Mariners in the AOS, despite dealing with crippling injuries all season. They just had another guy go down. Hater to the IL now. They're four and three against the Cincinnati Reds, who were three games ahead of them in the division and the wild card and are knocking on the door, trying to get into the playoffs. They're a half game back of the Mets who are watching their season go down the drain with this dismal stretch they've been on over the last couple weeks, seven and 13 in their last
Starting point is 00:04:53 20 for the Mets, one and nine in their last 10. Like what in the hell is happening to the New York Mets? It's crazy. They've gone five and five against the Cups. They're three and four. against those almighty brewers who are on that crazy heater where they're 26 and four in their last 30, they're three and four against the Padres, who, as I mentioned, are ahead of the Dodgers now. So we've seen them compete quite well with some of the best baseball teams in the league. You know, you hear these records against some of these teams, and you're like, all right, how, what? Like, why is it like this? Because on the other side of it, you've seen them again lose four times to the Colorado Rock.
Starting point is 00:05:32 They're two and four against the Atlanta Braves who have been beat up all season. What are the Braves a record at now? Like, they've been horrendous. Braves are down at 53 and 68 and the Cardinals are two and four against them. Like, that's ridiculous. It should never be like that. They're four and five against the pirates. And I know it's a division upon it, but at the same time, it's the pirates.
Starting point is 00:05:57 Should be beating them, especially when you're not losing to Paul Skeens. Those are the ones you expect. heck to lose. But they do fine against him for whatever reason. But those losses to the Rockies, to the Braves, to the pirates, that is where this season has shifted. But they have this strange ability to play well against the good teams. And that's what's kept them afloat so far this season.
Starting point is 00:06:24 And now the Yankees are here for the weekend. And it's another chance to raise their game and surprise people yet again. I will warn you not to get overly excited. I'm going to try not to get overly excited myself if they do win a couple games against the Yankees. Because how do we trust them? How do we do it when this has happened multiple times? And then they just come crashing back to Earth against a worst team. The Yankees come in at 64 and 57.
Starting point is 00:06:53 They've had plenty of injury issues themselves. Garrett Cole has missed the whole season. Luis Heel just returned at the beginning of August. He's been out all year. Has had one good start. The other one was not very good. He's going to have the ball tonight on Friday. Aaron Judge has missed some time.
Starting point is 00:07:09 Just got back from the IEL, Jean-Carlo Stanton, out with an injury. It was out a very long time. I was at his elbows this year. He had 10 and 90s of both of them. I remember in spring trail, I was like, what? What happened to this guy? They've dealt with multiple injuries in their bullpen. They've had unproductive members.
Starting point is 00:07:29 of their bullpen as well, namely St. Louis native, Devin Williams, who has came over from the brewers, another genius move by the brewers who cut bait on somebody and got some prospects in return on a guy who hasn't fulfilled the contract that he earned. Like, he was really, really good. He gets to New York, and he's not good, you know. Yankees are, they're in a bit of a rut, similar to where the Cardinals are. They're four and six in their last 10, eight and 12 in their last 20, You know, it's a good time to be playing them with the turmoil that's going on. You have Andre Palante against Luis Heel tonight. We'll have Sunny on the mound on Saturday against Max Fried.
Starting point is 00:08:11 And then it's Michaelis on Sunday against Will Warren. So, you know, you look at your pitching probabilities there for the Cardinals. You got two wild cards because you never know what the hell you're going to get out of Palante or Michaelis. One day they look great. The other day, they're giving up nine runs in three innings. And then you got your top guy, who's been. an excellent at home all season. So would it shock me for the Cardinals to win two out of three?
Starting point is 00:08:37 No, it wouldn't shock me at all. History this season says the Cardinals will probably answer the bell and play pretty well against them this weekend. But, and there's always a but when it comes to the Cardinals, like most fans, it's hard to put your faith in them, even if they do play well against the Yankees after what we just witnessed against the Rockies. Losing four or six to the Rockies is crazy. That can't be happening.
Starting point is 00:09:05 Losing four to the Braves in the season that they're having. That can't happen. You can't lose five to the Pirates. It can't be happening. Not if you're going to be serious about making the playoffs, which, you know, most fans are like they don't belong there. And I see why. I get it.
Starting point is 00:09:21 I get why you wouldn't want, you don't think they'll make it. But right now, there is still a chance. So I'm not overly optimistic about that chance, but it would not shock me if they play well this weekend and take two of three against the Yankee. That Max Fried game on Saturday is going to be a rough one because first off, we know how bad they are against lefties normally. And Max Fried's pretty freaking good.
Starting point is 00:09:46 So but you got Sunny on the mound of that one. So I don't know. We'll see. They win a lot when sunny starts. So we'll see. But it should be a fun, entertaining weekend, that's for sure. speaking of which we got some cardinal confessionals when I was talking about the Rockies there a moment ago. Chance for the fans to spew some venom, if you will, about the Cardinals who were as upset as I was when they played on Wednesday night. I was beside myself.
Starting point is 00:10:12 So anyhow, we're going to get to your confessionals coming up next here on Lockdown Cardinals. Starting point is 00:11:45 Leave it comments on YouTube as well as on X anytime you want. The feedback is always welcome and encouraged. And this is one of the moments where we take advantage of that feedback that you have been so kindly to give me. Time for some cardinal confessional. A chance to speak freely, if you will, about the Cardinals, whether it's good or bad, and we've got plenty of anger out there after that Rocky series. So many are just like, they suck. They're not good.
Starting point is 00:12:08 They're terrible. You can't do that. Like, I get it. All of it. Like, we had a lot of people who just were like, like, it's coming in and like, blah. And then they pop right back out of the comment section. They just want to let it out. And I get it.
Starting point is 00:12:19 I get it. You know, I vented a lot on Wednesday night after that game because I couldn't believe my eyes that a game like that would go down the crap or the way it did against the Colorado. Rockies. I keep coming back to that. You know, it's not that the bullpen blew the game and because that's going to happen from time to time. So I wasn't overly upset that that is what it.
Starting point is 00:12:42 It's against who it was. It was against the Rockies that bothered me so much that the offense just vanishes against the Rockies of all teams. Like I just, very frustrating. So here's our first comment. The other day before game one, you were getting hyped up on this team. I commented that every time you do that, they lose a series to, someone like a Colorado. The only thing consistent about this team is their inconsistency. And I know,
Starting point is 00:13:08 I'm right there with all of you when it comes to this. Like it's, it's very, very frustrating. It's maddening. I mean, if it is on me to talk bad about them so they'll win more than happy to do it. Like, where do I sign? I'll do it for you. You know, the Pirates and the Rockies games in particular to be six and nine against them, it makes your head want to pop. awful. Those two teams are combined 83 and 160. That's a 341 winning percentage. My math is right. And the Cardinals are 11% of their wins this season. It's, it is so bizarre and it is so frustrating that they just cannot get it together against those bad teams. And I don't know why it is. You know, there are some people that are blaming Ali. Here's a comment right here. If I was the
Starting point is 00:13:56 manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, I would resign and disappear. Porheim, Bloom has to come in and try to fix this. Mo sitting there going, boo, me, watch what I do now. If Bloom doesn't trade over half the roster, the next year will be just as bad. Just as bad. It'll be 2028 before we compete again.
Starting point is 00:14:15 I had to kind of fix that because whoever typed that, not very good typeer. Anyway, we've discussed this before. I know people point in Ali as a problem. And that's fine. Like there's never going to be, even when they were in May, when they were winning all the time, people still didn't like Ali. And people will never be on board with him moving forward. You know, and it's just the way it is.
Starting point is 00:14:43 And if you feel that way, then so be it. I don't know how to talk you out of it. I just, when I get upset about what has happened to the Cardinals and where they are as an organization and you see the attendance and you see like how something that was so good, got so bad. I pointed the decision makers above OLLI is where I go. The men who put this roster together who have made the poor decisions on who they're spending money on. When you have resources and you have a budget and you're not going to be one of those big market teams that goes and just splurges and just, you know, buys their way out of problems. If you're going to do it the way the cardinals are going to do it and you have to be smart and you have to make the right decisions with
Starting point is 00:15:26 the money that you are given from the duets. People are mad at it. them. They're like, are you guys are billionaires? Why aren't you spending more money to fix us? But even when they give money to John Moseilac, he'd screw it up. He was giving, he gives it out to the wrong people. You know, I blame him and other people for allowing this farm system to fall so far behind. That's what I get upset about. I mean, no manager is perfect. Tony LaRusa had his issues. Whitey Herzog had his own issues. You know, he didn't win every year. But, but, But they won more than they lost. And it just feels like ever since Ali came in,
Starting point is 00:16:06 that people just automatically were not on board with it. They didn't want him as the manager. And they're going to continue to feel that way. But I get upset about the people ahead of the manager and the people in charge. You know, I specifically when you think about the organization and the farm system, you know, developing players, if Ali had better players, they'd win more games. I mean, that's the way it is. No offense to Brendan Donovan,
Starting point is 00:16:34 but when Donnie is arguably the best player on your roster, you're not exactly in a great spot. I know we love Donnie and we respect him and he's a solid player. He's not a star, right? He's not a franchise guy that you build a team around. He's one of those really good pieces that you put next to the superstars. And when Goldie started to falter and when Nato has begun, to falter. You needed other people to step up. Those guys were hopefully going to be Jordan Walker
Starting point is 00:17:06 and Mason Wynn and Nolan Gorman and only Mason win has really made that jump. Just the inability to develop guys is the real issue to me. Think about the starting pitching right now. The best starting pitcher you have on your roster right now that you personally developed is currently Andre Palante. Like Libby is in his first year. as a starter, so I'm not going to count him yet, although he seems like, you know, he's going in the right direction. He should be a reliable guy moving forward. You've got Mason when, obviously, who was ascending here in year two, so, you know, I'll give you that, obviously. But that's kind of part of this new movement that just started the last couple
Starting point is 00:17:49 of the years. You know, the stuff before that, like Dylan Carlson was your guy. Again, Jordan Walker has not worked out quite the way you wanted to yet. either has Nolan Gorman. I do believe the future is bright, and I think they're heading in the right direction. I see a lot of good names and players that should help get things back in order for the Cardinals, but it's not going to be a quick fix.
Starting point is 00:18:14 You're going to have to spend money to turn things around that quickly, you know? And that's what I point at. I'm like, really? Like, Andre Palante is the guy. That's the dude. Like, you had to go buy Sunny Green, and you bought Miles, Michael. and fetti before that.
Starting point is 00:18:34 Obviously, McGrievey is young, and he's been very, very solid so far. Libby, and then there's Palante, like, Palanty's a big guy. Like, that just tells you what's going on and what had been going on in this organization and the farm system, that that is the best you got. There's another one. I've had it. I've had it with Nolan Gorman, wins J.J. Weatherholt. coming up so we can finally see some real talent play for the Cardinals. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:19:04 then another frustrating year for Gorman. The injuries, again, the back has been a problem. You know, I've been chatting with people who believe that Gorman's probably going to be a chip that Hyme Bloom will flip for pitching help this off season. I can totally see Heim going down that avenue and traveling down that path. I don't know what it's worth would be, you know. Maybe We flip him for another prospect who may be struggling somewhere else and hasn't lived up to their potential. And you just make a little swap there. A Gorman's hitting 225 with Sinholm runs and 34 RBIs in 227 at Bats. You know, the OPS Plus 102, just a tick above average.
Starting point is 00:19:46 The war, 0.1, the defense we've seen since Aronado went down and he's over there at third base. And, you know, he's throwing the ball all over the infield. So that hasn't been all that good, although in his defense, they made him switch to second. So maybe he's just not used to playing third in six games since that big home run against the Dodgers, which was awesome. He's hit 188 with one RBI, five strikeouts, 20 plate appearances, has got four walks. But consistency, right? We just have never seen it out of no one Gorman yet. So he's due to pop one again.
Starting point is 00:20:22 I'm sure he'll do it this weekend. He's due. got two righties to go up against in Luis Heel and Will Warren, so hopefully he'll get things going in the right direction again because you need him to either become a solid player for you or start showcasing the power so that we can get other teams interested in them. And, you know, maybe we can make a deal in this offseason. As for JJ, I saw that Mo was on TMA with on 101 ESPN
Starting point is 00:20:47 and mentioned JJ saying it's not the protection year, so I think it's not necessarily in the best interest for the organization to bring them up, even though it might be fun and exciting. You're not forced to put them on the roster this offseason. And so that's definitely something that should be a part of the equation. Just no fun, right? JT over Reverend Rance wrote about it too. He kind of explained it.
Starting point is 00:21:13 Mosea Lox said he was referring to the fact that Weatherhole does not yet need to be on the Cardinals 40-man roster to be protected from the Rule 5 draft. that wouldn't come until 2028. So there's no push that they've got to do it. You don't have to bring him up. And I know we want to see him because he's, what, number six and MOUB pipeline now overall. I want to see him. You want to see him. We all do.
Starting point is 00:21:38 But you do have Aronado trying to work his way back and is not put an end on this season yet. Like he's trying to come back. You still want to see Gorman play, you know? I mean, I'm not throwing it. in the towel on Nolan Gorman yet. It'd be nice to see him over these final 40 games. Give that. That could be the runway again to let him sink or swim the rest of this season.
Starting point is 00:22:02 So there's really no pressure to bring JJ up at this moment. But yeah, it doesn't mean we can't want it. It doesn't mean it would suck to see him up in a Cardinal uniform and playing this year. I might get some more people out to the ball game and to watch and see how he does. you know, kind of the way they did it with Mason Wynn, where, you know, they brought him up and, you know, Mason didn't do very well when he came up that first time. And people were tearing him apart, talking about how he's never going to be able to hit at this level. And he's still a work in progress offensively. But obviously, he's gotten better.
Starting point is 00:22:36 And, you know, again, I love me some Mason win. Keep the comments and stuff coming on YouTube or TikTok. Appreciate everything you guys write in. And we'll do more of these each week. I promise we'll get to more of these things because they're fine. fun. I like chit-chatting with you guys about it. So up next, speaking to Mason Wynn, some kind words by Brennan Donovan about the Cardinal's shortstop, plus some news about Paul Colchman coming up on Locked on Cardinals.
Starting point is 00:23:11 Thank you again for making Locked on Cardinals first listen today for your second list and check out Locked on MLB Game Night. It's every game. It's every night. All season long at local analysis on a national scale. You can find MLB game night on the Locked on MLB YouTube channel or wherever you listen to your podcast. John Denton. John Denton, who covers the Cardinals for MLB.com, posted a new article about Mason Wynn and his defense this season. In case you were not aware, Mason Wynn is having a tremendous defensive season over there at shortstop. And when it comes to the Cardinals, I know we treasure our defensive players, don't we?
Starting point is 00:23:50 Like, we love it. And healthy, this should be an amazing infield, right? When you have Aronado doing what he does over the third of the Mason and then Donnie playing second. and you know, you've got Wilson Catreras, who's been much better than most people thought he'd be over at first base. I think he'd be as good as he is. By the way, Caturis out of the lineup tonight. That sucks after getting hit on the foot. So that's no bueno.
Starting point is 00:24:14 But according to fan graphs, Mason Winn, he's currently first an ounce above average. And I'm not talking about just shortstop. Like first overall, above all players with a plus 21. He's only made two errors so far. this season. Both of them have been throwing errors. I can't even remember which ones they were off the top of my head. I would assume it's where he's gearing up to unleash and uncoil a 95 plus mile an hour throw over to first base to beat a guy and probably threw it in the dirt or something. I honestly don't remember the errors. 9.95 fielding percentage leads all major league shortstops as
Starting point is 00:24:49 well. In case you're wondering, the MLB record for fused errors in a season by a shortstop minimum, 140 games was Cal Ripkin Jr. back in 1990 and Omar Vis. Cal in 2000. A couple of pretty good short stops right there. And in this article, Denton was talking to Britton Donovan about Mason Wendon. And, you know, Donnie's got a gold glove. So he knows what he's talking about and said he's one of the best defenders I have
Starting point is 00:25:16 ever seen in my life. You can talk about the arm strength, the accuracy of the throws, the carry on his throws, the mental clock in his head, the instincts, the awareness to read swings and be in the right spots, the aggressiveness. his ability to do everything in a high level is incredibly impressive. And I'm serious. He's the best defender I've ever seen and he's only getting better. And I've said it repeatedly.
Starting point is 00:25:37 I think Mason Wynn is the face of this franchise moving forward. It was supposed to be Jordan Walker. It hasn't worked out yet. Doesn't mean he's not going to be a part of the movement moving forward to getting back to where we want to be as Cardinal fans and as an organization. But Mason wins the guy right now. He's got the look. He's got the swagger and he's doing it.
Starting point is 00:25:59 Now the offense, as I mentioned, the work in progress still, but the glove is crazy good. The arm is crazy good. And he's only 23, hitting 297 since the All-Star break, the OBP, the slugging, the OPS, all of it is up from the first half. Would love to see him kind of get put on the map nationally by showing out against the Yankees this weekend.
Starting point is 00:26:21 It's the players weekend. So there's going to be a lot of attention on certain guys, and obviously the Yankees are being the Yankees, people are going to be watching this. And I would love to see Mason Wend just kind of explode onto the scene for the rest of the country to see. We do have an update on Paul Goldschmidt.
Starting point is 00:26:40 Let me triple check the Paul Goldschmidt stuff because the last thing I saw that was that he was traveling with the team. IEL stint still not out of the question. We don't know if he's going to be held. But he tweaked his knee the other night, going for a foul ball and kind of slipped on the turf and tweaked his knee. So he's dealing with a knee strain. You know, as well as I do, if Paul Goldschman can play, he's going to try to get in that lineup. I still proudly rock.
Starting point is 00:27:13 My victory blue Goldie jersey for road games, dude, was a great cardinal. And it sucks that his time with the team ended the way it did after a rough year last year, goes to New York. Remember he got off to that blazing start? I was hit like 350 in the first like month and a half of the season and something like that. Things have soured quickly. Since June, Paul Goldschmidt is hitting just 207 with four home runs and 12 RBIs and 55 games. I have no doubt. If he plays in the series this week, it'll probably pop a home run because that's what former Cardinals do when they come to town.
Starting point is 00:27:48 But I certainly would love to see him out there at some point so that he can get the standing ovation from the Cardinal fans that will be there, the hundreds that will be in a tent. I don't know. Maybe we'll have a good crowd over the weekend with the Yankees in town. Most people like to come out and watch them. There you go. Quickly, a shout out to Eishon Henderson. Who? Eishon Henderson.
Starting point is 00:28:10 In case you're wondering, left-handed pitcher that is in the Cardinals organization, playing for Springfield, actually. They just put the MLB pipeline, new rankings out. He's number 15 left-hander. I had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning for Springfield. this week, 23 years old, struck out eight, walked one, matched the season high in innings pitched. Henderson is five and one with a 1.8,5 and seven starts since July 1st and a 2.42 mark across 20 outings this season, our season, pitching, pitching, the carls need a lot
Starting point is 00:28:41 of it. And there's a guy, Ishawn Henderson, that, you know, maybe we can quietly get excited about because you've had so many injuries in the organization. I just don't want to jinx anybody, and I hope he stays healthy. Be nice to see him get bumped up. Maybe he will get bumped up to Memphis this year. I don't know, but he's 23. It's not a kid, you know, like 20 or something like that, that we should be using baby gloves on him.
Starting point is 00:29:08 So we'll see. We'll see. But I thought that was cool that he's having such a good season and thought he deserved to mention. So there you go. Enjoy the series. Cubs and Pirates currently playing right now, Brewers and Reds tonight.
Starting point is 00:29:20 So the Cardinals, you know, if the brewers stay hot, they could make up some ground on Sensey in the wild card if they if they win a couple over the inks that's what we're hoping for do we think it's going to happen like I said history says they'll probably play them pretty well so looking forward to it though looking forward to watching thanks for making Lockedong Cardinals your first listen every day if you have it already give us a follow on accident L0 underscore Cardinals and a JD Sports Radio TikTok and Instagram and Lockdown Cardinals like subscribe on YouTube you're the best fans in baseball for a reason we'll see him next act
Starting point is 00:29:48 on Locked on Cardinals
