The St. Louis Cardinals offense explodes.
Wait, wait, wait, wait.
That can't be right.
What do you know?
This is not a drill.
The Cardinals' offense indeed explodes for a season high, 10 runs,
and they come from behind victory over the Angels.

Now, I know what you're saying.
I know what you're saying.
Calm down, Jady.
calm down, relax.
It's only two games, JD.
They're still in last place, JD.
They still suck, JD.
But for one day, for one day,
even the most negative of listeners of this podcast,
can we just enjoy a couple of cardinal wins,
back to back wins?
Can we do that?
Not be a bunch of sour pusses on this Tuesday?
can we do that?
Let's smile a little bit.
Let's bring a little joy to our lives.
All right.
What occurred in L.A. on Monday night was horrible for the first six settings.
Don't get me wrong.
It wasn't a whole lot of fun to watch that game.
Same crap, different day, as far as how the Cardinals' offense was going about its business.
Bad at Bats, swinging at the first pitch.
I still don't understand that whole idea.
Like the last night I watched the angels broadcast of the game.
I've told you this before.
I like to switch it up.
Sometimes I don't want to hear the Cardinals guys and what they're saying.
I want to hear what the other teams are saying about the St.
Louis Cardinals.
And they talked about how when they fall behind in the count,
they're hitting like in the 150s and how terrible they are.
And when they're ahead in the count,
they're hitting like close to 350,
like somewhere in that vicinity.
I forget what the exact stat was.
But.
And I kind of.
constantly see him swinging at the first pitch and going down 0-1. It happens all the time.
So bad at bats, no clutch hitting to speak of. It's like Bill Murray's Groundhog Day movie over
and over and over on an endless loop of just pain and disappointment for Cardinal fans.
I'm right here with you. I get it. Matthew Libertor. He wasn't great last night.
One thing about pitching at the major league level, I know that it sounds stupid and then I'm
stating the obvious here because it seems like such an obvious thing.
but at least on Monday night.
I'm not saying this happens every time Matthew Libertor takes the mouth,
but he was throwing a lot of pitches either right over the heart of the plate
or pretty close to it.
And you have to possess some pretty dominating stuff to live in those areas
and not get burned at the major league level.
You've got to possess something that stands out.
And Libby is just not that guy.
He just isn't.
He doesn't throw 99 or 100.
He's got a very good curve ball, but he's not, he's just not a dominating type of guy.
Has done very well out of the bullpen this year.
Compliments on making the start, given the Cardinals a few innings,
but he needs to live on the edges of the plate.
That's just, that's his spot.
That's his sweet spot, you know?
And if he's not on the black, he's not going to be very successful.
And on Monday, he wasn't very successful.
And the angels hit him pretty hard because of that.
And he wasn't, you know, up in the zone and just all, I'm just saying like every pitch just kind of was center cut.
Like it was just right there in the middle of the played area, which is going to make things tough for him.
And we can make fun of the names like Kevin Pilar, Kyron Paris, Nolan, Shaunawell.
By the way, three guys named Nolan in the same game last night.
That can't happen too often, can it?
Just pointed that out was like a lot of Nolan's in this game.
But those guys, they're still major league headers.
You know, Kevin Pilar has been in the league for a long time.
Good veteran player, although he got DFAed by the White Sox this year.
So I don't know how good he is in favor of Tommy fan, by the way.
But anyway, they rip Libby for four runs on five hits and just three and a third
innings.
He walks two.
He strikes out just one, gives up the Homer, two, Pilar, and leaves the game down four to
to nothing.
Not a great spot for the Cardinals, considering the offensive problems they've endured
this season.
but in comes Kyle Leahy and he settles things down.
I give a lot of credit to Kyle Leahy for not letting this thing get out of hand.
He throws two and two thirds innings of shutout ball.
He strikes out three and he keeps the Cardinals in it.
Any momentum that the Angels had, he just stomped it out.
So hell of a job by Cal Leahy.
The Cardinals don't pick up their first hit until the fourth inning on an opposite field single by
Paul Goldschmidt, who's starting to swing it a little bit better.
He's not all the way back by any means, but you can see that he's starting to get at least a little bit better, right?
Although he had some opportunities later on and it didn't work out so well.
But had a prime chance to get back in the game in the sixth inning.
Let's go to it. Mason, when gets a lead off double.
Siani grounds out moving when to third.
You get back to back walks to carp and new bar sets up the bases loaded for Paul Goldschmidt.
And we're all doing it online.
We're all rooting for him.
We're all like, come on, Paul.
Come on, Goldie.
This is your moment.
This is where you're going to rip one into the gap.
We're going to score a couple of runs.
and everybody's going to cheer for you and we're going to see more smiling.
But probably the last guy you won up in this situation right now because he's not all the way back yet.
Even though he's looked better at the plate, but the angels, they do the smart thing.
They go and get Adam Sember from the bullpen here, okay, even though their guy Soriano had been very good up to that point, started walking people.
The Cardinals seem to start to figure him out a little bit.
And they bring in Adam Sember, who's a got is a quirky sidearm right-hander, has a ridiculously long.
tongue like a lizard. I don't know why he keeps sticking it out, but it was grossing me out.
Anyway, he does his job. He comes and starts throwing these little frisbee pitches at 72 miles per hour
and finally gets Goldie to ground into an ending ending double play. His fifth grounded into a double
play of the season, which which leads the club by the way. Not even close to the major league lead,
though. I said look that up. Aaron Judge's got like 11 of them. What? Anyway, so a situation like
that gets past the Cardinals and game over, right?
That's the end of it.
Like, that you think that that's going to be the only moment they have.
But the Cardinals get a lead off dinger from Nolan Aronado in the seventh inning,
which was really nice to see.
I'm going to throw a little picture of Nato up on the on the YouTube right there.
There he is.
High five and all the guys in the club are in the dugout.
And, you know, it kind of gets the momentum back into the Cardinals favor.
They start to believe a little bit.
And it's nice to see Arnado do that.
Nato's first home run ever at the Angel Stadium.
So that's pretty cool.
And this would spark what would eventually turn into the greatest offensive
vending for the Cardinals all season.
Now, normally I wouldn't go through all of this, but damn it,
the season has been tough.
So I want to relive it and enjoy it a little bit because I stayed up for this game
and this was super awesome.
You know, Nato gets the home run.
Then you get a Gorman single, Herrera singles,
Angels pull Simber in his stupid freaky tongue.
and they bring in the left-hander Matt Moore to face Donovan.
Smart move, like, but Donovan has a good at bat.
He singles.
Then Mason went is up.
Bases loaded.
Nobody out.
Bad spot normally for the Cardinals, right?
Who were coming into this particular bat four for 33 at this point with the
base is juiced on the season.
He singles.
Make it five for 34.
And the score is now four to two.
Starting to believe a little more.
Burleson comes into pinch hit for Siani.
Now, I get it.
because Burley's been crushing it lately.
Like Burleson,
out Burleson might be your cleanup hitter right now.
He may be he maybe he should be.
Like maybe Nato should bat in front of him and then move Goldie down just a little bit,
just for a little while until he starts to continue to get things better.
But he's been hitting the ball well.
And you got to admit that that is true.
But in this situation,
he comes in cold and he pops out the third like a turd.
And now it's bases loaded one out, five for 35 with the bases loaded.
And then the end of the.
a bat of the night in my opinion. Okay, this was really fun to watch. Matt Carpenter,
the grizzly vet, he steps him, gets ahead, two balls, no strikes. You know why? Because
he doesn't swing at the first pitch, just because it's over the plate. No, gets ahead two,
O, fouls the next two off. Then a massive take on a great breaking ball by Moore makes it a full
count. Like most cardinal hitters would have swung and missed over the top on that breaking ball,
and that would have been the end of the app. But carp,
focused laser focused,
takes it,
takes it for a ball.
And then on pitch number six,
he pulls a fastball on the outside part of the play,
but he pulls it into the hole,
which many people pointed out,
if that shift is on there,
that's probably an out.
But not here.
Matt Carpenter finds the hole between first and second,
two runs score.
We got a tied ball game at 4-4.
Cardinals are now six for 36 with the bases loaded.
Newton walks to load them up again,
and that brings in guess who?
Paul Goldschmidt,
or as everybody's calling him,
online right now. Oldie, which I admit makes me laugh a little bit. But he comes in to face
Luis Garcia. All right. The angels go to the bullpen again. Luis Garcia, they call him in,
who clearly still takes money from the duets because he's obviously a secret agent for us because
first pitch, he plunks Goldie to bring home another run. And I even tweeted out, I was like,
is anybody else nervous for Paul Goldsmith in this event like I am because I was like,
oh no, man, I do not want to see him fail again with the bases loaded.
I need something good for this team for Paul Goldschmidt.
And thank God, Luis Garcia felt the same way.
And he plunks Goldie on the first pitch, brings home another run.
Nato is up next.
And what does he do after hitting the home run?
He whiffs like a punk.
He looked terrible at bat.
Didn't look good at all.
But then Gorman comes up and this is where Ali gets in on the action a little bit.
Gorman is up 3-1 in the count.
And then Ali calls time out.
He comes out, starts talking to the home plate umpire.
And we think he's talking about whether or not the angel's alignment is legal or not.
Just speculating there.
I never saw whether or not that was for sure what was going on.
I'm sure there's news out about now.
But at the time, we weren't totally sure what he was talking about.
But it put a stop to the game, you know, all the, all the adrenaline that Luis Garcia had going.
all calms it calms it all down, right? Basically, he iced the pitcher, or as the joke I made was,
he's either icing the pitcher or he's icing our own hitter in a three one count. But after a couple of
minutes, an umpire huddle, absolutely nothing changes. They don't tell us anything. Nothing gets
announced of why the game was stopped. Next pitch by Garcia is a ball. Another run comes in,
makes it six four. Herrera rips another single scoring two, eight to four. Donovan walks,
wind lines out to right to end it, but what a freaking inning.
Cardson, 14 hitters to the plate, and eight of them come around to score.
I saw somebody online say, I need a cigarette after that inning.
That's how much fun that was for Cardinals fans who have been waiting all year to see something
like this happened and finally it did.
I mean, talk about flipping the script.
The Cardinals had seven hits in the inning, including two strike hits from Mason Wynn,
Brennan Donovan, Matt Carpenter, and Yvonne Herrera.
They also drew three walks.
She had the hit by pitch on Goldie.
amazing, right? That was fun. We should do that more often.
The Cardinals had a couple more runs later on. They end up with 10 hits total in the game.
Their third consecutive double-digit hit game and also drew eight walks, which is great.
Three of which came around to score. Ten runs were the most they've scored in a game this season.
And it was plenty to beat the Angels by the final score of 10 to five. Happy vibes, great no-quit attitude.
When the chips were down again, could have been easy to just roll over and say, we'll get them again next time.
No, they didn't.
And they've done this a couple times this year.
So you got to appreciate them.
Kyle Leahy gets his first major league win, needs to work on his interviews after the game because my goodness, he was boring as hell.
He might have been nervous talking to people, but do the Cardinals use a machine to like suck the personalities out of people?
Like, why is it like that?
Like, I need somebody with some juice in that locker room doing interviews, like having some fun and enjoying the fact that they want.
I mean, Leahy was just like, yeah, it was really good.
Like, come on, kid.
Eight run inning was a lot of fun, though.
Good, smart, tough at bats for the most part.
It was beautiful to see Matt Carpenter or Marp, as we call him.
The big hit.
He also walks in this one.
He and Newt at the top of the order went just one for eight,
but combined for three walks, a couple of runs scored.
At the beginning of the year, I thought Donovan and Newt Bar would be a great one,
two at the top of the lineup because tough at bats,
take a lot of pitches, follow a lot of stuff off.
That's what I was hoping for, really work, the opposing pitchers.
And Donovan's had a tough time.
You got to admit it.
He's hitting just barely over 200.
Matt Carpenter, since he's come back, has filled that role nicely.
And Newpartner seems to be getting his eye bag and starting to look more comfortable,
and that's good stuff for the Cardinals.
So love to see them set in the table for the rest of the lineup.
This wind puts them in a tie with the Reds for last place in the NL Central at 17 and
24, but it's two wins in a row. So let's smile about that. Now up next, we're going to discuss
the recent comments from Bill DeWitt the third. And what he said and why what he said has fans
so upset. We'll do that next on lockdown cardinals. Baseball season is underway. Don't miss your

There were some comments made by Builder with the third.
on Sunday. And I haven't really had a chance to comment on them yet because it happened over on the
weekend. And then we had the wrap up with the Brewer series already scheduled. So I want to circle back to
it real quick. Because I, you know, for a brief moment, because it certainly was newsworthy.
And a lot of people have been talking about it. So in case you missed it, it was during an interview
with Martin Kilcoyne from Fox 2 in St. Louis. And it wasn't all bad. It's not like he jumped on
the mic and was just like, carnal fans are stupid. Stop whining.
or we'll take the team away for it wasn't anything like that but but he did make some interesting
comments about the fans and about payrolls so here are some of the quotes from bill de witt
the third who is the son of bill de witt junior so it's not the uh the number one top dog owner in
case you're wondering but uh here's what he had to say um we have an incredible fan base because he
starts off good here he says we have an incredible fan base and my job is to not take that for granted
and to give people a great game day experience and a winning ball club.
Fan frustration is definitely high.
We're in last place in the central.
We all believe, and I think our fan base believes,
that this is a better team than this.
So far so good, right?
Not saying anything that isn't true or controversial,
but here's the part that is getting most of the attention.
Bill DeWitt, the third talking here.
The thing I chuckle about is when I see sometimes comments,
we got to not show up to send a message that isn't acceptable to the owners.
And he giggles a little bit while he says this, which is pretty arrogant, if you ask me.
He continues by saying, quote, I find that's, I find that somewhat illogical reasoning because
we turn this revenue machine into a payroll machine.
I mean, that's what this is in this business.
We try and drive as much revenue as we can.
And then it gets put onto the field for the most part.
If you look at the revenue rankings in MLB, for the most part, with a few rare exceptions,
your ranking and revenue translate into your ranking and payroll.
That's been true for the Cardinals for many, many years.
We have been around 10th out of 30, and that's where our payroll has been.
We try and drive as much additional revenue as we can so we can drive up the rankings
because we know there's a correlation between payroll and winning.
We don't want to have to take for five years to get good draft picks.
end of the quote.
Now, I've never had a problem with how much money that the duets put onto the field.
Like when it comes to the payroll, I've never had a problem with how much money that the Cardinals spent.
I think they do very well, okay?
There are a lot of teams that would love to be able to spend the amount of money that the Cardinals do.
What I have an issue with is how Mo has decided to spend the money because in recent years,
there's been a heck of a lot more misses than there have been
free agent hits, right?
Like, Sunny Gray looks to be like a good one.
Kyle Gibson looks to be like a good one.
Lance Lynn, I'm not going to complain about that either so far.
They seem to be pretty good ones, but you've had a lot of bad contracts that they've
thrown out there.
And, you know, these are decisions made by John Moseilock, who I've continued to say,
if you're going to point the finger at somebody, you're going to be pissed at somebody for all the losing.
I'm not going to start pointing at Ali Marmel first because he did not build this team.
If he mismanages what he's got, yeah, you can rip them all you want.
And that's fine.
There's plenty of times that he's done that.
It's not like he's this incredible manager, although the icing, the pitcher move was kind of nice.
Getting thrown out of the game on Sunday, kind of nice.
Those were good moves.
But there's just been, you know, since last year, you're watching a lot of talent leave the organization and succeed.
and the guys they keep not doing so well.
You know, Jordan Montgomery, Jordan Hicks,
Tyler O'Neill just left this organization this past year
and are seeing good results at other places, right?
We've seen a Rosarena, Adoles Garcia, Lane Thomas,
at Gall and Sandy Alconja.
I don't have to go through all of them.
We've been over this enough.
You know the names by now.
Multiple all-stars going out and the guys they keep,
they just don't produce to the levels that they thought they would
while these other guys are all excelling elsewhere,
becoming all stars and superstars in other places.
And we still don't really know what the disconnect is.
Like there hasn't been an answer like,
we figured it out.
We know why we're screwing this up.
We don't know why these guys who may not do so well in St. Louis
end up thriving elsewhere.
Why are guys who seem to have bright futures
and all the talent in the world,
former first round picks like Matthew Libertor and Jordan Walker?
Why are they struggling to make the impact at the major league level?
I feel like that's more of the problem than payroll itself.
You know, you got to spend money in the right spots on the right people and you got to be able to develop.
And those comments about spending depending on attendance, I was a little confused by that too because I'm pretty sure.
All right, I'm not a mathematician, but I'm pretty sure the cardals have been higher than 10th in attendance, especially at home.
But overall, the last couple of years, for sure, right now there's sixth in home attendance in 2024.
and fifth overall in major league baseball.
That counts what they're doing on the road as well.
Last year, they were fourth in home attendance and sixth overall on two last
place teams.
And payroll on Spottrack has them at 14th in the league.
Again, I'm not great at math, but I'm not seeing how those match.
Maybe it's just me.
Am I looking at this wrong?
So when I hear that, I'm like, well, come on, man.
And then giggling and chuckling about what the fans are saying,
whether you,
just a bit of advice here,
whether you agree or disagree with what they are saying.
Openly laughing at them during an interview isn't going to do you any favors,
Mr. DeWitt III with how they feel about you,
how they feel about this organization,
how they feel about the front office,
especially when you're in last place.
And in a town like St. Louis, you know,
We take things very personally.
And now you're laughing at your fan base when your team is in last place for a second straight year.
Not a great look.
Not a great look.
Bill DeWitt the third is not the baseball side of this operation.
Give him credit.
That's not his thing.
He's not the guy signing people and trading for people.
He don't do that.
He's about the money.
He's about the money man.
He's behind the scenes.
He's making sure that they churn out profit and revenue.
That's his job.
And he's been pretty good at it.
You got to admit that.
Yeah, the baseball stuff, that's on Mo.
All right.
So the parts of the interview where he discussed stadium upgrades and business stuff was quite interesting.
And he sounded great.
So maybe next time leave your opinion about what the fans should do with their hard-earned money to yourself next time.
All right.
Final thoughts on Monday's game and a preview of Tuesday's matchup coming up next on Lockedon Cardinals.

things going on with the team, Dylan Carlson. You know, we were hoping that he would show up and
inject some life into this offense. We were hoping that we would see the guy that we saw
at the end of spring training. Remember, he was raking it,
look pretty confident in the outfield.
Doesn't look good at anything right now.
Like everything Dylan Carlson does just looks awkward right now.
He looks scared.
O for 17,
since getting called back up, has one walk and four strikeouts.
Oh, for 17.
And defensively, where you were hoping,
okay, at least he can do something good there,
he looks terrible.
He's getting bad jumps on the ball.
he's taking strange routes out in the outfield.
Everything just looks awkward with Dylan Carlson yet.
It's like he doesn't trust himself or he doesn't trust his shoulder after the injury.
And that's a horrible place because Dylan Carlson needs confidence.
We've seen it year after year after year.
He's got to have confidence in himself and his abilities if he's going to do anything for
this Cardinals ball club.
And right now confidence way down.
And you can see it.
And I saw him take a couple of really good hacks in the game.
last night batting from the right side, which was good to see to his, let him cutting it loose.
But still, no results.
I hope he breaks out of it soon.
But right now, I am completely fine with Michael Siani starting full time in center field and leaving it that way.
His offense isn't great.
We know that.
That's not what he's going to be awesome at, you know, low 200s type of hitter probably,
but he can do some small things for it.
He's got the speed.
Obviously, we know he can bunt.
He's done that a bazillion times this year.
but that defense out in center field, you know, it's just night and day watching Michael Siani
go after a ball and then watching Dylan Carlson go after a ball.
It's night and day.
Like late in the game when the angels were starting to rally a little bit, they had to go to
Nick Robertson.
There was a ball that fell and Carlson got a terrible jump.
He misread it.
Michael Siani probably catches that ball.
Like no problem.
Back pocket.
Boop.
And again, with this Cardinals pitching staff,
where they're not all about swing and miss.
You need the best defenders you can have out there.
And Dylan Carlson ain't it in center field.
Michael Ciani needs to be out there as much as possible.
He got pulled earlier in the game for the Alec Berlinson at bat,
which made sense.
I'm not arguing that at all because you were hoping to get a big hit right there.
Who would you rather have hitting?
Alec Berlinson or Michael Ciani, right?
But you have to make that sacrifice defensively when you make that move.
But at that point, they were playing catch up.
So I totally understood that move.
But I don't need to see Dylan Carlson in center field anymore, at least not in the very near future.
I get me Siani every time.
I don't want to see Carlson going after balls in center anymore.
What he does in the corner spots, whatever, center field, eh, get out there.
Credit to not only Kalehi, but John King, Andrew Kittridge, Nick Robertson for the job they did in the pen on Monday night.
Ryan Fernandez had a tough go, didn't retire a hit.
hitter while he was in there, a hiccup in what has otherwise been a pretty good year for him.
So we're not going to, you know, we're not going to get too angry at Ryan Fernandez for having a
bad night. It happens. But that was a great job. John King coming in. Fantastic job. Obviously
Leahy. Kittridge comes in three straight days. He's had to make an appearance, comes in to get one
hitter. Didn't waste any time. Got a hoppy out in, uh, what, three, four pitches. It was really
quick. But, um, that was a heck of a job. So good jobs to the bullpen once again.
Speaking of bullpen, got some good news.
Reliever Keenan Middleton, who's been sidelines since the middle of spring training,
due to that flexor tendon sprain continues to progress.
He is scheduled to start a rehab assignment tonight on Tuesday when you're watching this,
but it's tonight with AA Springfield.
So cool, awesome.
Love to see him coming back.
And the boys have their ace Sunny Gray on the mountain today.
On the bump, looking for a rebound performance after getting hammered by the Brewers last week.
Angels, they're not a great.
team. We know that. The Cardinals haven't been a good team either. But looking at the
rosters, if you just look at the rosters, the Cardinals should be beating these guys.
And hopefully, they can continue this upward trend after beating the Brewers on Sunday,
almost beating them on Saturday, and then beating the Angels come from behind when on Monday night.
Hopefully the confidence starting to rise a little bit. You're starting to see less
faces where they're just down in the dumps all the time. You're starting to see some
I don't know, confidence a little bit, a little bit, baby steps.
This isn't, we're not getting out of control, but again, let's enjoy the wins for what they are.
