Hi, and Bloom is saying all the right things as he gives more clarity on his vision for the St. Louis Cardinals, including what the plans are for Nolan Aronado and Sunny Gray.
You are locked on Cardinals. Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Hey there, Cardinals fans. I am J.D. Haffern and I'm a former national radio sports anchor, born and raised in St. Louis and a lifetime Cardinals fan.
and I'm your host for Locktown Cardinals, part of the Locktown Podcast Network, covering your team every day.
This is a show serving Cardinal Nation and giving you all the info about the birds on the bat on today's episode.
We're going to be discussing an interview that Hein Bloom just did.
They really showed the type of guy that he is, the type of leader he's going to be for this organization.
He also answered some of the roster questions that fans have.
Plus, the Wild Guard round is complete.
We've got an NL Central matchup in the division series that should be quite interesting.
the division series is littered with former Cardinal.
So we'll be discussing those as well.
Today's episode brought to by Fandall right now.
New customers can bet just $5.
And if your bed wins, you'll get $300 in bonus fest to use across the app.
So download the app today.
Late Wednesday night, I just happen to be scrolling around on YouTube,
usually looking for something to do with scary movies at this time of year.
Trivia, behind the scenes, you know, reviews, dirty stuff like that.
You know, we're actually going to go see The Shining tonight,
me and the wife are, uh, wife's never seen it.
I know it's old, but it's classic.
So, uh, we thought it would be appropriate now that it is October.
Anyway, so I'm scrolling and the Cardinals alert goes off and up pops this video.
And it says it's 52 minutes long.
And I'm like, whoa, what is this?
And it's an interview in the Cardinals podcast studio where they do the, the insider show.
But it's Chip Carey, Brad Thompson, a new president of baseball operations time bloom.
And I'll be honest, I don't watch all the pods that they do.
Just like I'm sure you don't watch all the episodes that I put out there, for those of you who do, awesome.
Thank you.
But when I saw 52 minutes, I was curious, like, what in the hell are they talking about for that long?
52 minutes is a lifetime these days when it comes to podcasting.
And as I'm watching it, I found myself really drawn into the things that Hime was talking about.
it's not like I followed Heinblum when he was with Tampa Bay or with Boston regularly.
I, you know, I knew of him, but it wasn't like I was there working, following the team day
and day out and got to know who he really was.
And, you know, at the press conference that he had when they introduced him,
you got a couple of minutes there where the media asks a few questions.
And normally fans are mad and complain to people to the writers like Derek Gold and
and Katie Wu about not asking particular questions or asking more questions and people were a little
disappointed in Himes introductory press conference because they felt like they didn't get a lot of answers
on some of the things, specifically the roster.
And in this podcast, he went into more detail about some things that fans were wondering about.
So I thought I'd open up today with some of the intel that I took from this interview,
which is linked down below so you can check it out for yourself.
I encourage you to go do that because I don't have time to go through the whole thing, obviously.
But I'm going to point out some things that, you know, I thought were important from what they talked about.
First thing I noticed was how open Hime was and how comfortable he is behind a microphone.
It wasn't as if he was like searching for ways to speak but not give answers, which fair or not.
I feel like John Moseilock did a lot of.
He kept things close to the chest.
And it drove a lot of fans nuts.
And I'm a lot of them.
Like, you know, you just want, you know, the word that we like to hear is a little more, you know, transparency and honesty.
And we don't feel like we got a lot of that with John Moseilok because it felt like he was keeping things back and didn't want to, you know, pull the curtain back and show too much ever.
He was always, it always seemed like he was keeping secrets from us, right?
One of the things that I think hurt most final years was the lack of explaining to the Cardinals fans what they were trying to do as an organization.
You know, in the movie Philadelphia, Denzel Washington's character has this phrase where he's like, explain it to me like, I'm an eight-year-old.
And, you know, nobody likes to be talked down to like you're a child.
But I feel like sometimes these guys could be a little more.
open to what the plan is, why you're doing certain things. You know, when you, when you sign a guy
and instead of going off and signing other people when there's better talent available, be like,
well, here are the reasons why we went down this for out, you know, explain it. Explain why this is the
way we're doing these things. Maybe more fans would have understood it better. You know,
why the Cardinals have struggled the last three years? What's going on? Haim doesn't appear to have that
problem. I know he's the new guy, but he even uses the word transparent and transparency,
which is something that I think fans will enjoy if he continues to do it. He's like, I can't show you
everything that we're doing, obviously, but I want to be more open about what's going on with this
team and why we're heading into different directions and doing certain things. You know, as fans,
we invest our time, we invest our money and our hearts into this franchise. And when you keep us in the
dark and make us feel like we're not getting the whole truth about some things, it upsets us.
We don't like that.
We want the knowledge.
Give us everything you can without giving away everything so that, you know, obviously,
you can't tell everybody everything that's happening behind the scenes.
But, you know, be a little more open with us.
Make it feel like we're a part of it because that's what we want.
Haim at least here.
And I hope in the future feels like he's going to be a better communicator with the fan base,
which is awesome.
He talked about cohesiveness.
He talked about principles.
He talked about continuing the cardinal way of things as far as being smart on and off the field,
but updating the methods to be ahead of the rest of the league,
setting the standard like this franchise used to do instead of, you know,
following the standard and like being behind, you know,
as it pertains to the roster and why they learned or what they learned from 2020,
were questions answered about certain players.
They didn't name specific players,
but we know who they're talking about.
We're talking about the Nolan Gorman's,
and we're talking about the Jordan Walkers.
And, you know, some of the young guys, like,
where are, where, where is their part on this roster?
Like, what are they, are they going to be around?
What are they going to do?
And I'm going to paraphrase here,
because I'm not going to go through all of this.
Again, it was 52 minutes long.
But, you know, he said he learned a lot and that not every question was
answered, but that there are some players who still have more that they can show them,
and hopefully it comes in a way that they can give them opportunity to do that.
But we might create competition for them as well, depending on what they can go out and get,
which to me sounds like, you know, they're not exactly so.
And I'm going, well, these are the guys there.
We're stuck with.
We're stuck with them.
And that's who we have to do.
You know, it makes it sound like, look, you know, we're going to, we want to give you
a chance to prove that you're better than what we saw this year.
but at the same time, we're not going to just let you, you know, go the whole season and be what you have been.
At least that's what I took from it.
They're like, you're going to have to be better because we're still trying to win ball games.
This is not, you know, this is not a reclamation project where losing is accepted.
That's not what the goal is here.
The goal is to reach the long term goals, but at the same time winning in the short term as well.
And he does touch upon that a little bit later.
Chip went into this even further about, you know,
roster stuff and asked him about guys like Nolan Aranato and Sunny Gray and Wilson Contreras,
the three veterans remaining who have substantial money or years on their deals and also no trade clauses.
He asked about them.
I'm going to share with you what Heim had to say because he was very open about what the plan is with these three
guys. So we'll get into their situations next on Locked on Cardinals.
This episode is brought to you by prize picks every day we make decisions. But on prize
picks being right can actually get you paid, which is what we like. Don't miss the
excitement of this football season. Don't miss out on it. You've got prize picks where it's good
to be right. Playing prize picks is a lot of fun. Simple is part of the reason why I like it so
much. I don't need a complicated app to make life more difficult for me.
I like the price fix is very simple to add more excitement to the games.
You just pick more or less on player projections,
like passing yards or rushing touchdowns or rushing yards, receiving yards.
I love how quick it is.
You can make your lineup in under a minute.
They've also added a thing they call stacks.
So if you want to ride with a player, say someone like rating MVP Josh Allen of the Buffalo
Bills.
I can select his passing yards, rushing yards, and touchdowns.
Put it all in one lineup.
They also added the new injury reboot feature where if somebody goes down in a game early on,
it's not going to count against you.
You're not going to get burned by that.
Download the prize fix app today.
Use code locked on MLB to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup.
That's code locked on MLB for $50 in lineups after your first $5 lineup.
Price fix, it's good to be right.

So most fans are a bit bored with the manager behind the scene stuff that we've had to talk about recently.
They want answers about what players are coming back.
Those are the guys they see on the field.
That's what they want to hear about.
Who's getting traded?
Who are the Cardinals signing?
These are questions that we all have.
And as much as I wish I had all of those answers for you today, there's just no way to tell you.
You know, you're going to have to wait until, you know, the World Series and stuff is completed.
And then you can start getting into who's opting out and who's going to be trade bait and all of that stuff.
You got to see who gets knocked out of the playoffs.
Who's mad at themselves for not going further.
And that's going to alter a lot of things.
So we will do our fair share of discussion this offseason about all of that, about possible free agents and trades.
don't worry. But as far as like concrete journalism goes, there isn't much available on those things
just yet. But in this interview, Heim did get into some specifics about the three players
currently on the team in Nolan Aronado, Sunny Gray and Wilson Contreras, and about what their
futures might be with the Cardinals and how they will handle this situation. Again, these are
veterans with money and years on their deals. They also have no trade clauses. So,
So they can be very, very complicated.
We learned that the hard way last off season when there was a deal done with Houston
and Nolan Arnada was going to go and be an astro.
We don't know what the specifics were.
We don't know what players were coming back.
We don't know how much money was getting eaten by the Cardinals in that deal.
But there was a deal in place.
And Aronado vetoed it, said no.
And he ended up on the Cardinals for the rest of the year.
So all of that could have happened again.
That could happen with all three of these guys.
So here's what Heim had to say on the situation involving.
And he went into, you know, he broke it down for all three of them.
It wasn't like one big melting pot of answers here.
He just said, I've spoken with all three of them.
And I actually think all three have been pretty to their credit forthright with
our fans about where things stand.
He went on to say there's not going to be a point where we're not trying to win.
We are always going to care about that.
We may, as we are now, just have a strategy that's,
more long-term oriented.
So that puts us in a position where it might not line up exactly with where
certain players are in their careers.
I think in Nolan's case, we were pretty much on the same page that given where we are
and where he is, a fresh start is something that might make sense for everybody.
So that's something we're going to work with him to pursue and to look at.
The other guys are in different situations.
Wilson was actually very vocal that regardless of what work we need to do,
whether strategy is long term, short term.
He loves it here.
He wants to be here.
If there's an opportunity that made sense for us,
that might also make sense for him,
he'll listen, he'll look at it,
but he's really excited to want to be here.
Sunny also, I don't think there's going to be any issue
if we come into spring training and Sunny Gray is still wearing the birds on the bat.
But he's another player where, given where we are,
given where he is, it's possible something could line up
that where it makes more sense for us to move him and make sense for him to want to go there.
And if that happens, we'll talk to him and see if it works out.
But for us, it's really just again going to be held up against that yardstick of,
does this help us get closer to those goals we have in the long term?
Now, this went on and led into a discussion about the difficulties in this business
because they, as front office personnel, they care about these people as humans.
You know, I, Cardo fans, it's all I know, right?
I've been a Cardo fan since I was, you know, a baby.
We get attached to our players.
We don't look at them as pawns on a chessboard.
We don't look at them as just objects that can be moved, whatever we want.
We like to love our players.
Like we love being able to know them as almost as like you feel like you're friends with them in a way.
It's just kind of the Midwest thing that we are.
I don't think it's like that in other places around baseball.
I don't think it feels that way.
But the Cardinals have always felt like a family type of situation.
and, you know, we've been lucky that a lot of guys have wanted to be here for the long term.
So when he talks about this where, like, you know, they care about these guys, they like to connect with them,
how it's a people business.
And he wants, and this was a really great quote from him, the second a player comes into this organization,
until the second he leaves, I want this place to be great for that player.
So there's a personal touch that he wants to put on this.
thing, which I don't know if it's been there the last few years.
I, you know, maybe.
I don't know.
It just feels like things lately.
And I know it has a lot to do with losing, but it just felt very cold the way that things
were being run, you know?
It used to be like that.
That's how things used to be run around the St.
Louis Cardinals.
You know how many like superstars would come to St. Louis?
I mean, Mark McGuire, Matt Holiday, Jim Edmund, Scott Rowland.
They would come here via trade and then fall in love with.
the organization and with the fans and the city and they would stick around for lower than market
value. They were happy there. There was winning. There was tradition and they were a big part of it and
they felt like a family. You can see it in their faces when they come back and they're wearing
the red jackets on opening day and during Hall of Fame weekend how much fun and how fun they
think of this place and to see where it is right now is disgusting, obviously. And we got to get back
to that. So hearing that,
that, you know, the Cardinals and still somewhat have that effect on somebody like a Wilson Contreras,
you know, who wants to stick around. And, you know, Nolan Aronado stuck around. He had a chance to opt out,
but decided not to still feel that that way is pretty cool. And I hope that that attracts more players
to St. Louis, despite it not being a major market, despite that they may not be able to give
as much money as a bigger market might be able to, but because of the way that we make players feel,
they'll want to come back and they'll want to be a part of the St. Louis Cardinals.
So I like that he made that a point to bring that up.
He also said that you also do have to put feelings aside for particular players.
And you got to do the right thing.
You got to do your job and do the right thing by the organization.
Okay.
He admits it's very, very hard, but it's harder when you don't do those.
deals, which means you aren't serving the organization and not serving the fans because you're
not doing the right things to deliver them what they want, which is winning baseball,
championship baseball. And the situation, it just kind of reminded me of the Miles Michaelis extension.
You know, I mean, most of us like Miles. I've heard some people have written him that maybe
he's not the nicest guy. I don't know him. But he seems to be a good clubhouse guy. People seem
to like him. Obviously, he's great with the media. He's a fun character.
But when they gave him that extension, was that really in the organization's best interest to extend him for two years and give him a no trade clause?
Or were we doing him a solid because he had been a good cardinal for a while?
In hindsight, it was a terrible idea, right?
In hindsight, now, if he had rattled off back-to-back all-star season, you'd be like, all right, a great job, Mo.
But that didn't happen.
and he's progressively gotten worse and it was a bad deal.
You know, those funds could have been used to bring in much better talent for the same price,
if not cheaper.
Like we've seen other guys that have been available and you're like, yeah,
and we're paying Miles Michael is this?
And we get all worked up about it.
Haim then went into some personal stuff about getting into the game,
how he ended up as a part of the Major League Baseball and how he,
came up with the Tampa Bay raise. He talked about his family and the kids. He spoke about his time,
both in Tampa Bay and in Boston, which was a totally different situation for him. He talked
about preparing the players for what happens not only between the lines where he's like,
we should have them ready for any situation between the lines. There's no excuses of why anything
that happens on the field, we shouldn't have them prepared for it. We should have all of that
covered. And he's like, obviously, we have to.
deal with off the field scrutiny and that's part of this game.
He's like, so that's something that we can't, you know, always make sure that they're prepared
for that way, but we'll do our best.
But anything on the field, he's like, we can control that and help that and make these guys
great.
Went into how they will continue to add to the operations group over time, talking about
scouting and behind the scene stuff.
He went into a lot of detail about, you know, what this is going to look like.
He discussed developing pitching and how confidence and identity is so important for pitchers.
And because things, you know, have advanced so much in the game of baseball that it's his job to make sure that the Cardinals are in the front of the line and optimizing whatever special talent or the superpower is.
He called it, whatever they possess so that they can help them become the best version of himself.
You know, he kind of made it like, you can't just choose one style of a pitcher and roll with that.
So you can't just say, okay, I need somebody six, five, throws 99 and that's it.
If they don't do that, we're not, we can't take them.
He's like, no, there's more to it than that.
So he delves into that just a bit.
And that's an area that, as we know, feels like the Cardinals fell well behind it,
which where they weren't utilizing their, what they had.
available as far as resources to develop their talent at a better level.
And that's how they've kind of fallen behind where their farm system,
there wasn't enough good players coming back up to help them instead of having to go out
and buy free agents.
They're like, well, we've got these guys and we're developing these guys.
Well, they haven't been doing that in the last few years.
It's just been a lot of me.
and I think that's what he's talking about there is that like, you know, we're we're adding that and we need to be in the forefront of all of this.
You know, I don't, I don't, he kept saying things like, you know, I don't think we're ever going to be where I want us to be because that would mean we're settling and we don't want to do that.
You know, we always want to be striving and try to continue to be better and better every single time.
So I like this, you know, it was really fun to hear him talk, talking with prospects in the system.
this year. They, you know, they've raved about the number of instructors and knowledge that they are
receiving in the minor leagues now and that they really enjoyed that. It's something that was
obviously missing until Heim came and started adjusting things a little bit. He did point out that he's
like, hey, we're not, you know, it's not like there was nothing here and it was just horrible.
He's not, but he said there are things that, you know, I came in and saw that we can improve on this
and that and we're going to take that. And then,
the good stuff that we already have. We're going to put it all together, and this is how we're going to build this thing.
So it appears things are headed in the right direction, but obviously this is going to take some time.
So don't expect to turn around just next year. He also gave a bit of a rundown of what things are going to look like.
You know, October. He said, obviously, he's going to be a little quiet because, you know, you still got the playoffs going on and, you know, it sucks that we're not there.
And, you know, that's what we want to be doing. We don't want to be sitting here. We're waiting.
but November should pick up with the GM meetings and stuff.
So, you know, it was a great interview.
So please check it out if you haven't already.
I'm going to talk some playoffs to wrap things up here next.

They even, they go live even when there are no games.
Like tonight, there's no games, but they'll be discussing the playoffs for sure.
I will not be hosting tonight, by the way.
I'll be back on Monday.
But the Division Series games will begin on Saturday.
And we say goodbye to the Guardians,
whose hot streak finally fizzled out against the Tigers.
And former Cardinal, Captain Jack Flaherty, four and two-thirds innings,
one run three hits, four strikeouts for Jack.
He can opt out of his two-year deal with Detroit at the end of the season.
But he is set because he made more than 15 starts.
He's set to make $20 million next season.
So that's a lot of cheta to just blow off.
But if he thinks, if him and his agent think that they have a shot at
a better deal and a more long-term deal.
That's obviously something they'll look into.
I'll tell you one thing if Jack continues to pitch well in the postseason,
that'll help his cause out last year when he was with Detroit and then got shipped to the Dodgers,
things didn't go all that great while he was in L.A.
So the market for him was not as robust as I think he was hoping for.
The Boston Red Sox got manhandled by Yankees rookie Cam.
Holy Schlittler who punched out 12 socks hitters over eight
eddings.
That was a dominant performance.
And then former carnal manager, Mike Schilt, with names like Fernando Tatis Jr.
Amani Machado, Louisa Rice, that insane bullpen that they gave him.
They still don't win.
They fall to the Cubs three to one.
So they are gone as well.
The playoff troubles for Mike Schilt continue as they're on.
able to to move on. There were some heated discussions with the umpires. I don't know if you guys
saw that footage, but umps were leaving the field at Wrigley and they had to go by the Padres
dug out and the Padres, the whole bench is screaming at him. There are some controversial
strike calls against San Diego. I have to give that to them. You know, ABS is going to be able
to help out with that next year. Thank God. So again, it's not the every once in a while miss call,
like Miss Baller Strike that bugs me.
It's the egregious ones.
And then the ones in huge situations where it's like, what?
And we can fix that.
We have the technology to fix that and help the umpires.
It's not to embarrass the umpires.
It's to help them get the calls right so that the game is played the way it's supposed to be played.
So I'm looking forward to ABS next year.
How about former Cardinal Andrew Kittrich?
Kit in the series.
pitches in all three games is in relief in the first one.
He starts game two and then gets the save in game three.
Not bad, Kit.
Still sucks you're wearing cubby blue,
but you were one of us at one point.
And we loved you because he was just so cool.
I loved Kit.
But that sets up an NL Central battle with the Cubs and the Brewers who,
the Brewers were on fumes at the end of the season.
Can they recapture the magic that they've had most of the season
to take care of Chicago.
I think they will.
I still trust the Brewers
and their ability
to get the most out of players.
I love me some Bryce Terang,
by the way.
Like, I hate picking favorite players
from other teams,
but sometimes you've got to do it.
And Bryce Terang is somebody
that I adore for the Milwaukee Breweres.
I think he's fantastic.
So give me Milwaukee in that series.
A juggernaut match up
between the Dodgers and the Phillies.
Phillies don't have Zach Wheeler
which is really unfortunate, but they still have a lot of good arms.
Christopher Sanchez, Jesus Lazzardo, Ranger Suarez, Aeronola,
if he pitches like the Aeronola that we're used to seeing.
But the first three there, all lefties,
which I think is going to be interesting because they'll have to go up against
Totani and Freddie Freeman and Max Muncie.
Dodgers still have a lot of good right-handed hitters too.
And it's the Hernandez's that you really got to watch, right?
Tay Oscar and Kike Hernandez plus a right-handed hitting Tommy Edmund, which we know is very lethal.
The dude can mash from the right side.
So I'm going to trust L.A. in their starting pitching and in this one.
So give me L.A. over Philly.
I know the Philly fans aren't going to like that.
But AL, you've got the A.L. East matchup, Yankees, Blue Jays, Toronto won eight of 13 against New York in the regular season.
Maybe no Bobichette for Toronto still.
that's a massive loss for their offense.
He had one hell of a season.
But that's been a very pesky lineup all season long.
Like they are so, they're like gnats.
And they're just annoyed.
And they just wear down their opponents.
And I don't know, New York to defeat Boston had to come down.
They lost that first game and then had to win two in a row.
I wonder how they're feeling about themselves.
I mean, they won.
But, you know, it took an incredible performance from Cam Schlittler to get it done.
you know, is that going to happen again? Probably not. So I'm going to like Toronto,
especially if they get Boba Shep back in me Toronto, but I still think they can take care of business.
Then you got Tigers at Seattle. I pick Seattle to win the whole thing. So obviously I'm going to
ride with them again. Starting pitching, excellent. Brian Wu's status still kind of up in the air,
which would be a big missing piece there for that Seattle starting rotation. But they've got
plenty of capable arms there as well.
A solid bullpen in their offense
led by Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez,
Ehuyaheos-Fores,
Josh Naylor, Ranii Roserana,
and Jorge Polanco,
who I think might be a secret weapon,
a certain guy that you should keep an eye on
in that series if you're watching. So
there you have it. All starts up on Saturday.
