Starting point is 00:01:00 And if you've been betting on the Cardinals to win, recently probably working out for you because the Cardinals, man, they had a doozy of a game on Saturday at Bush Stadium. Pitchers duel for the first, what, six, seven innings? And then it kind of went sideways later on. And you saw the lead seesaw bit from the Cardinals to the D-backs before swinging back to the Cardinals, giving them the series win, which is why if you're on YouTube, you can see me in the ugly loud shirt again today. Good to bust it back out after the series loss against Detroit. But now that they've already won the first two in this series against Arizona,
Starting point is 00:01:43 series when, which means you get the ugly shirt. But genuinely, just another exciting game that had a little bit of everything on both sides. So I wanted to jump on and talk about it here today on this Memorial weekend. You know, what a roller coaster this game was. It was, you know, nice. easy early on and then up and down and up and down and then way up and then stomach drops when we when we dip down in that eighth inning and you're screaming and you're freaking out and then we go way back up again and then we kind of go upside down a little bit in the ninth inning until the end
Starting point is 00:02:22 where safely you were at the end of this ride known as the cardinals diamondbacks game on Saturday and you're like damn that was fun and just over 37,000 fans. in attendance to witness at a Bush Stadium, which was great, was nice to see Bush filled again. But at the forefront of everything was Cardinals right fielder, Jordan Walker, both in good and bad ways. But let's start with the pitchers, both starters. Well done.
Starting point is 00:02:47 Matthew Libitor for the Cardinals, Merrill Kelly, for the Diamondbacks. Both were excellent. This was not a surprise. It was expected. I told you about this on Friday. I was like, this is going to be a tough game. This is going to be a pitcher's duel. Watch.
Starting point is 00:03:01 And the cardals were able to jump on Kelly in that first inning. They get three straight singles from Mason Wend, Brennan, then and then that man again, Yvonne Herrera, which, by the way, I hate to admit this, but I bought a pair of his pants, like his uniform pants online on eBay. They were, there was this, it was like 40 bucks. And it was like the, you know, the, the, the victory blue ones that they normally wear on the road on Saturdays.
Starting point is 00:03:28 And I was like, dude, I'm going to, I'm going to go for this one. I believe in Yvonne Herrera enough where I bought the man's pants. Not used. I think they were just game issued pants. I didn't have any dirt or anything on it. But anyway, but after that, it was not a lot for this offense, right? Zilch, not a nothing. Kelly was locked in.
Starting point is 00:03:45 He was lights out outside of that solo home run from former Cardo Randall Randall Gritchuk and his stupid jump shot celebration, which is fine. I thought it was funny. Everybody booed him. That happened in the fifth inning. Arizona didn't do much against Matthew Libbert, just six hits, no walks, four, breakouts, he continues to be one of the best pitchers in the game.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Lowered his ERA to 2.73. That's now inside the top 25 at all of baseball, for starters. We get to that seventh inning, and that's when Jordan Walker's presence in this game takes over in a major, major way for good and bad reasons. The first one is a very good reason. In the seventh inning, games nodded at one. Cardinals get a leadoff single by Alec Berluson, who I don't know if you've been paying attention but has been catching fire and is now hitting 291 on the season. And remember,
Starting point is 00:04:32 he wasn't hitting at all in April. And burly biscuits, whatever you want to call him, he's back. He's back. So you get him with the single and then you get a walk by Nolan Aronado. That brings up Walker. Kind of got Kelly on the ropes here to use a boxing term and they just need that. They're big, talented, young right fielder to do some damage. Or at the, at the very least, right, a productive and bad. And he says, why not both, right? Why not both? He rips the slider into left field one 13.5 off the back. It's moving so fast that it scoots under the left field or guerriel. It goes all the way to the wall, both Burley and Nato scored. Yes, Nato scored from first base on this hit. Makes it a three to one.
Starting point is 00:05:27 ball game. Jordan's at second base. He is pumped. He's jacked. He's giving him the flex. Huge moment. Huge moment for Jordan Walker. Big hit from the kid who he's looked better at the play recently. I'm going to give you some stats here in a little bit, but he's looked better at the plate recently. Big hit for this team, obviously, against a heck of a pitcher in Kelly. And with nobody out, the Cardinals, then play a little bit of small ball. And they do the little things. back-to-back productive outs from Victor Scott and Joelle Pozo gets Walker in to make it four to one. That run would be huge in the next inning. At the time, you're like, ooh, nice, a little add-on run becomes huge in this game because the sky comes crashing down.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Cardinals, you know, they're feeling great about things at this time. You're up four to one. You just knocked Merrill Kelly out of the game. There's been one of the better right handers in the National League. But then you get a rare tough outing from Kyle Leahy. and you get a couple of defensive hiccups in the top of the 8th, and the game takes on a completely different tone. And Jordan Walker, unfortunately, he played a big role in that inning
Starting point is 00:06:37 with a major defensive oops in right field. We're going to talk about it in this entire pivotal inning, and then we're going to talk about Walker's redemption arc. And that's coming up next for you on lockdown cardinals. The NBA playoffs are in full swing and every night delivers highlight worthy performances, major momentum shifts, and can't miss moments, whether it's a game winning shot or a breakout player. There's never been a better time to get in on the action.
Starting point is 00:07:11 I know we're all talking about Tyrese Halliburton right now for obvious reasons. Pacers, man. Pacers. Fando makes it easy to stay in the game before tip off and when the game is live. You know, they got the player props. They got performance trends. and same game parley's. Fans have more ways than ever to play smart and win big.
Starting point is 00:07:32 If you've got to read on who's heating up in one of these two series that remains or in a particular game, you can back it up with the same game parlay. So many stars to choose from, obviously. I talked about Halliburton with the Pacers. Obviously, big names over on the Knicks with Brunson and Company in the Eastern Conference Finals in the West, Oklahoma City Thunder. Shea Alexander, I mean, how are you not going with the MVP? Minnesota Timberwolves, obviously, as well.
Starting point is 00:07:57 Anthony Edwards, Monster. So a lot of guys, a lot of fun guys to choose from in these series. And if you're new to Fandall, it's the perfect time to sign up because you can head to Fanduel.com and place your first $5 bet. If it wins,
Starting point is 00:08:11 you're going to get $200 in bonus bet. So make every moment more with Fandul, the official sports betting partner of the NBA. Thank you again for making lots on Cardinals. Starting point is 00:08:30 So the Cardinals have been one of the best, if not the best defensive teams in baseball for 2025. Stats back it up. It's one of the big reasons why this team finds itself in the thick of things in the NL Central at the Memorial Day weekend, which, by the way, thank you to all the brave men and women who have given their lives to protect our way of life and our freedoms. I can't thank you enough. I've got military in my family, a lot of friends who have been in the military as well and all
Starting point is 00:08:56 of you. You guys are angels, man. I appreciate you. But when it comes to outs above average, Cardinals are a plus 25. The next closest team is the Atlanta Braves at 18. That's a big difference. That's how good this Cardinals defense has been. Defensive runs saved are a plus 22.
Starting point is 00:09:17 That's fifth overall. It's been a real treat to watch this team do what they've been doing defensively. And one of the reasons that they've been really good and have such good numbers is that there is, there is no spot on the field that just, you know, brings it down. Over the last couple seasons, there's been areas where you're like, we're not so good here, we're not so good there. Jordan Walker was one of those reasons, right? As he was trying to figure out how to play right field,
Starting point is 00:09:45 trying to learn a new position and get better, the numbers weren't great, obviously. And this year, he's been really, really good. Has been a huge upgrade to what he had been in right field the last few years. Jordan Walker, I don't have many bad things to say about him as a defensive player. He's still learning the position for sure. He's going to make mistakes, just like any human does. Every single guy on the field is going to make a mistake defensively at one point or another.
Starting point is 00:10:13 It's just going to happen probably. But the work that he's been doing with John Jay has clearly paid off. And he's limiting the small mistakes, really. And that's been a huge improvement on what's, going into what he's doing in right field. He doesn't have to make all the dazzling plays all the time. Just don't screw up the small ones and the easy ones. And you can move on from that and live with that.
Starting point is 00:10:42 He's making the place he's supposed to make. And also getting to some that perhaps he shouldn't, dude can cover a lot of ground. Again, 84th percentile in sprint speed. Jordan Walker can move. And then you got Victor Scott out there on the 99th percentile in sprint speed. You know, they cover a lot of. ground together in center field and right field. So that's nice. And then you got a very capable
Starting point is 00:11:04 left fielder in Lars Dupar, obviously, who's not spectacular. But you'll see him makes a pretty cool play is that jumping play into the wall in foul territory recently. Obviously, a huge highlight. That was a massive play for Lars Dupar. But the eighth inning on Saturday, Jordan Walker goes for a do or die play in right field. And I don't have a problem with him doing that. It's just doing it at the time that he did it. He shouldn't have gone that aggressive at that point. And it ends up costing the Cardinals. Top of the eight. Diamondback string back string together. You got a double. You got a single, then a sack fly. And that made it four to two. Then there's another single. And this is all off Leahy. And Ali goes to Matt's to face
Starting point is 00:11:53 the lefty, Josh Naylor. Only 10 pinches for Leahy. Eight of them strikes. He only gets one out. the Diamondbacks were just finding holes. I'm not sitting here worried about Kyle Leahy by any means. This was not a great game for him. And it was because the Diamondbacks just found holes. I mean, neither the hits from Perdomo or Suarez were hit all that well. It's not like they were stinging the ball all over the yard and he was giving up bombs. That's not what happened.
Starting point is 00:12:19 They just found grass. And it's going to happen to a pitcher eventually. But this is when the big blow happened. So they switch pitchers. Nailer rips a line drive to right field and Walker tries to make the sliding grab. And he whiffs. Paul goes to the wall, both runs score. Nailer ends up with a triple.
Starting point is 00:12:41 Your game is tied. Now, if Jordan Walker makes this catch, we're all like, oh, we're singing his praises and how phenomenal he is. You miss it. And then the trolls all start coming out and talk about how bad he is in right field. He sucks. you can't do this or that just nonsense. Situationally, what he did was wrong.
Starting point is 00:13:04 The smart play and the right play is to just make sure that you keep the ball in front of you to keep the tying run from scoring. That's goal number one on this play. Jordan made a similar play recently where he slid, very similar, and ended up getting the ball on the short hop. Like it skipped,
Starting point is 00:13:26 and he was able to snag it with his glove. And, you know, at the time when that play happened, we were all like, whew, it's a good thing he got that. Because if it gets past him, that's trouble. It didn't work this time. He tried it again. It didn't work this time. And now not only is the game tied,
Starting point is 00:13:48 but the go-ahead run is now on third base and you got less than two outs. So it puts the cardinals in quite a predicament there. There are certain times where the risk of a great thing, aggressiveness is a okay. This just was not one of them. And I'm sure John Jay and Ali was like, think about the situation because I don't want him to not be aggressive
Starting point is 00:14:09 going after the balls. It's just certain situations you got to know better. You know, it's just like at the plate where they've come up with that philosophy and there's a good time to hit and there's a good time to slug. Well, there's a good time to be really aggressive in the outfield.
Starting point is 00:14:22 Then there's times every you don't. And you just take it on the hop, make sure that you keep it in front of you, lived to fight another day. Didn't work out for him this time. And it's a learning spot. But then you get the Randall Gritchick pop-up to shallow center field right after this. And nobody can find the ball.
Starting point is 00:14:44 I mean, as soon as it went up, you're thinking Donovan's going to have that. He's at second base. He's going to make this play and loses it right away. Arms are up in the air. He's like, I have no idea where it is. Victor and Jordan are flying in towards it. but they can't get to it. And it drops in for an RBI double.
Starting point is 00:15:04 Stuff that we have not seen from this Cardinals defense, hardly at all this year, happens in one inning. And the league is given up because of it. Six-five ballgame now with the Diamondbacks in front. Crowd is stunned. Diamondbacks have all the momentum. They're like, oh, my gosh, look at us. But thankfully, the guys in that Cardinals dugout
Starting point is 00:15:24 and the guys who were on that field at the time, they didn't have the reaction to all of this the way some fans did, which I was shocked to see online during the game. You know, I'm on X talking about plays and stuff, which you can always follow along and it's fun to interact with fans. But how many people were like, I'm done, this team's over, this game is over, I'm turning off the TV. I was just like, what to one run game?
Starting point is 00:15:54 Are you, what are you nuts? Like, how do you flip that quickly and just, you're like, nah, I'm out. Like, it's crazy to me. You guys were so upset. And it's like, yeah, I was shocked. I wasn't mad at anybody. I was just like, I can't believe I'm watching this. I can't believe this just happened because we're so used to the Cardinals making all the plays.
Starting point is 00:16:16 And when it doesn't happen, you're like, wait, what? We're human. Anyway, the St. Louis Cardinals, the team, luckily they didn't quit like some fans did bottom of the eighth cardinals down by one now and this roller coaster is going to swing back into the cardinals uh side of things and it starts with yvonne herrera who takes a walk he's so good then i own his pants and i'll throw it out there again i can't wait to show him to you guys on the on the podcast anyway so he walks alec burleson doubles on fire recently huge at bad for burleigh and that brings up
Starting point is 00:16:56 Nolan Aronado. First pitch swinging. I don't like that. Never have, never will. But he puts the ball in play. He doesn't pop out, which he's been known to do from time to time. He doesn't strike out. Hits it into the hole between short and third. It's something he like, pulls it down there. Aulano-Sourres makes a nice play to his left, sliding plate to his left to cut the ball off. Gets it, has to throw to first. No, he knows he doesn't have a play. at home play, the game is tied. But there was another part of this play. It was huge.
Starting point is 00:17:34 And that was the base running by Alec Berluson, who goes from second to third base on the third to first base because Suarez didn't look him back long enough. Suarez makes this nice play, kind of glances at home, realizes he can't get the person, goes over to first base, never really looks at Burley. And Burley just fooo scoots right on over to third base. I'd play.
Starting point is 00:17:55 It was close, but Burley got in there. So now you've got a runner on third, two outs, and once again, it's Jordan Walker coming to the play. But those little things hitting it on the ground, good base running, just solid baseball by this team helps erase a rare bad defensive inning. So now you've got a tie ball game and it's little things that got them right back into it. So you got to love that stuff. So here's Walker. Big two run double is last time up, tough play in the field right after that. that how will he respond?
Starting point is 00:18:33 How is he going to react? And how is he mentally after making a mistake in ranked field, despite right before that he had this massive two-run double? That's what this season is about for Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman. Walker's getting more chances to see the field because he's not a liability in the right field. You know, and there's not a lot of guys that can do what he does. And how would Jordan Walker respond in a situation like this is what you want to see? And boy, oh boy, did he respond nicely?
Starting point is 00:19:08 He laces an 01 fastball into center field, base head gives the Cardinals the lead again. And this is why he's got runway, folks. And I know there's a lot of you who have already given up on Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman. And that's fine. But this is May. We were two months into this thing, and I know overall you're going to see his numbers at 203, three home runs and 20 RBIs. You're like, that's pathetic and he's not good and this and that, and that's fine.
Starting point is 00:19:42 You can be that person. But this is why they're giving him runway. You live with the good and the bad and are trying to make these guys better ball players, both physically and mentally, and Jordan just showed you that even after a disastrous play in right field, where he could just hang his head, quit. this game mentally be like, I screwed up and I'm done. To refocus come through against a dude throwing like 101, 101 and Justin Martinez, like just throw smoke, I couldn't be happier for him.
Starting point is 00:20:12 I was like, yeah, I was a clap, but I was a playoff game or something. I just, I want him to succeed so bad. It's so important to this franchise that he becomes a really good player. And I see it in him all the time of how good he can be. And as I mentioned, those numbers are. aren't great, but in his last seven games, he's batting 333 with a home run and seven RBIs and 18 at bats. Maybe we're turning a corner here. I don't want to get overly excited about it because it's a small sample size. But I'm seeing him take better at bats. You're also seeing him know the
Starting point is 00:20:48 zone pretty well, and he's getting upset with umpires who are calling stuff that aren't like way off the plate strikes, but they're calling strikes against him, but he doesn't think they're strikes. So he's really kind of locking in on what his zone is and stuff. And he's, you know, I'm sure he's thinking, it's hard enough for me right now. I don't need you guys helping the pitchers. But I don't know. I like the fierceness. But it was another massive hit for Jordan Walker and this team. And it was awesome to watch. It wasn't over yet because the Hellsley experience, hard attack Hellsley keeps coming out. and stressing everybody out.
Starting point is 00:21:30 Things got interesting in that ninth inning. Lead off single. You get the strikeout, but then there's that 10 pitch walk, which is awesome at that. And now you've got tying run at second. There's one out. Always base runners on when Ryan Heldley is pitching.
Starting point is 00:21:44 Clean innings are a rare thing with him. And then you get arguably defensive play of the game. Happens when your platinum man, Nolan Aronado, and Alec Berluson pull off an outstance. ending play. Lordus Gurriel Jr. has another long at bat against Helsley after that 10-pitch walk. He goes six straight foul balls before ripping one in the hole. And Nato dives to his left, spears it, throws the first, and Burley has to scoop it. Last few years, you don't think about that at all because you got Paul Goldschmidt over there. Alec Berluson is not an everyday first
Starting point is 00:22:20 basement by any means. He's working hard on it. He wants to be. And that would a hell of a scoop. to save a run. They get the second out. Just a hell of a play on both sides. Helsley ends up whiffing Suarez on a wipeout slider to close it. Incredible game. Two tough defensive plays made it way more stressful in the top of the eighth inning than the game needed to be.
Starting point is 00:22:44 But Walker comes through twice at the plate despite the mishap and right field. That was huge. Aronado with the ground ball fielders choice to tie it. Then the play in the ninth to save the lead, huge. Matthew Libertor's start. Fantastic. That was huge. Just a fantastic series win for the Burtz, who are now 29 and 23 on the season. Cubs lost to the Reds, so it pulled them back within two games of first in the NL Central. They'll go for the sweep this afternoon with Sunny Green on the bump against Brandon fought.
Starting point is 00:23:14 But I want to show some love to Miles Michaelis. Before we close out here today, I want to show a little love to Miles Michaelis for his effort on Friday. We'll wrap that up next on Lockdown Cardinals. Thanks again for making Locked on Carlos. Your first listen today for your second listen, check out the all new Lockedon MLB Game Night. Every game every night, all season long, and local analysis on a national scale.
Starting point is 00:23:43 You can find MLB Game Night on Locktown, MLB on YouTube or wherever you listen to podcasts. So on Friday, we talked about how good this pitching staff has been this year, how surprisingly good they have been this year. Because honestly, most people looked at this rotation and coming out of Spring Train, you're like, eh, no true number one, really? you know, nothing really exciting after Sunny Gray, if he is your number one.
Starting point is 00:24:06 And the guys you wanted to see, the young guys, Quinn Matthews, Michael McGreevy, they went down to Memphis. So far, you've seen these guys step up, man. And I mentioned how good Miles Michaelis was after the Boston game, after the Boston Massacre. And he was superb again on Friday, six settings, one run, four hits, the solo home run by Catal Marte. And once again, using his excellent defense that the Cardinals have been playing, keeping the ball away from the heart of the plate, working the corners, changing speeds. He's just pitching so confidently and rarely missing spots.
Starting point is 00:24:42 And it's led to a ton of success for Miles and this team. He's a lot of combined five runs in his last six starts over 33 and two-thirds innings. The updated numbers since that disaster in Boston on April 6th, eight starts. He's four and one. The team is five and three in those starts. 43 to third innings, 10 runs on 31 hits, just three home runs. We know the home run ball has been a problem for Michaelis over the years. He slowed that down.
Starting point is 00:25:12 13 walks, never really worry about him putting a lot of people on. 27 strikeouts, so a little over five innings per outing. ERA at 2.08? Hello? As much as we've clowned on Miles Michaelis here, a lot of cardinals, Lizard king deserves his due. And I'm giving it to him, man. I'm very much impressed with what I'm seeing from Michaelis since that game in Boston,
Starting point is 00:25:36 where, you know, you had talk show host saying you got to DFA him, you got to get rid of them, it's over. I never said that. But I was like, you got to figure something out, man. You can't just let him get his brains beat in every night. There's got to be something. There's got to be something to unlock here. And they figured it out.
Starting point is 00:25:56 Miles and Dusty and the catchers. and they figured something out, and he's just been really, really good. He kept them in that game on Friday. Cardinals finally broke through on Zach Gallen and that sixth inning highlighted by the Aronato, two out three run triple to give them a four to one lead. Like I said, heart attack, Helsley has to come in and make things even more difficult. I just, it's, oh, dude, it is rough watching Ryan Helsley right now because you don't trust anything. Like, you never think that he's going to blow it, but you know,
Starting point is 00:26:28 something's going to happen and it's going to get stressful. Gives up two in the ninth inning on the home run to Moreno, but they hang on to win at four to three. Aranaata with a triple and scoring from first base in Saturday's game. This dude's going to have to pee in a cup soon because this speed is elite. Can I have to up his speed on it will be the show. Pronto. I'm joking.
Starting point is 00:26:55 He's still one of the slowest players in the league. Sprint speed at 13. Yeah, he's not fast. But running the base as well, how do you score from first on the Jordan Walker double on Saturday? Like nobody told me. We've talked about how amazing it to watch Victor Scott do it. No one hard out just did it. That's crazy.
Starting point is 00:27:13 And then, of course, a triple to left center. This team continues to play very, very well as a team, right? They pull out victories together. Certain guys step up at certain times. You know, Nupar shows the power from time to time, but getting on base all the time. Victor Scott, bottom of the order, speed, excellent defense in center field, swinging the bat very, very well, obviously this year is the second leadoff guy in this order. Jordan Walker, working on things, trying to figure it out, but much better lately. Nato, defense, goal glove worthy.
Starting point is 00:27:51 No doubt about that. He's been outstanding. He's not hitting home runs. Get over it. It's not going to happen. It's just not. This is who he is right now. But he's getting, when he comes up to the plate lately,
Starting point is 00:28:05 it seems like he gets the job done more times than that, yeah, you're going to get the pop-ups and stuff. But it happens. But he's not killing this team sitting in that number four spot anymore where guys are just left on. And now he's getting his jobs done. He's moving guys over all the time. Like I said, the triple, the home run against Scoobel the other night.
Starting point is 00:28:25 He's been great. Mason win. Great since going up to the number two spot. Brendan Donovan, super solid. Wilson Contreras dealing with those back spasms, feeling better, apparently. But Alec Burleson's been stepping up, and he's been great. Of course, you got Ivan Herrera, Pozo, Pahez, that triple threat catcher thing that they got going on. It's working.
Starting point is 00:28:46 Pitching's been good. The debacks are a really good team, and the Cardinals will go for the sweep on Sunday. That's pretty darn impressive. Pretty darn impressive.
