heck of a Hall of Fame weekend at Bush Stadium, both on and off the field for the Cardinals,
who welcomed in three new members into their hall, the Mad Hungarian Al-Rabowski.
We had shortstop Ben to renteria and the Lake Great Walt Jockety, who was the GM from, what,
1995 to 2007.
What an era of success that was for the Cardinals, one that we're hoping to get back to, you know,
we want to return this once proud franchise back and do the,
the mega power that it was under Walt Jockadees watched during that time because that,
my friends, was a lot of fun back then.
And with those inductions, you know, it came the return of so many legendary players to St.
Louis and to the ballpark who, you know, were in the hall plus members of the 1985 team
that they were honoring over the weekend.
And, you know, selfishly, I was kind of hoping that the team would get a little bit of a boost
from having all of those people around to put a good product on.
in the field this weekend to align with all those big names coming back.
You know, Yaddy was back in the dugout over the weekend.
And I'm happy to say that the boys delivered, which is why if you're watching on YouTube,
you got the ugly winning shirt on for the third straight series.
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm going to have to wash this sucker after wearing it three times.
Wow.
Friday night, if you remember, we'll go through this real quick.
But Friday night wasn't very much fun.
We know that.
The Giants came in on an absolute heater.
They trounced our Cardinals 8 to 2.
But Saturday, in what seemed like a lost cause of a game with the boys trailer 2-0,
in the bottom of the night, they pull off that miraculous comeback.
It was capped by Jordan Walker's walkoff to run double against another Walker to take game two.
Then on Sunday, you had Sunny Gray taking the bump,
and he was looking for a bounce back performance after getting beat up a bit by the A's back on Monday.
And for five innings, he was about as good as you can be.
Sonny took a perfect game into the fourth inning, had a no-hitter through the first five,
five strikeouts.
You know, my mind watching it started to float back to the game against Cleveland when he threw
the complete game shutout.
And he was just incredible.
That's the kind of path he was on.
Like he looked that good.
It felt like we were going to see something special.
You were seeing some really nice defensive plays back there.
A couple of them by Thomas and Jacey.
sunny retiring the first 11 that he faced so you know your mind starts to wander a little bit like
is this going to be is this going to be something special like look at him go and in the bottom of
the fifth you know the cardinals because we're zero zero at this point cardinals finally rewards him
yeah they got some help from the Giants pitching staff after breezing through the birds of the first
four innings giant starter Kiway tang I think is how Kway 10 is that how is how we pronounce it I
I only heard it a couple of times, but loaded the bases on three consecutive walks to Walker Church and for mean before Newt made him pay with a frozen rope.
By the way, happy birthday, Lars Neufar.
28 years old today, by the way.
Frozen rope, making it won nothing.
I'm kidding, because it was not.
It was a broken bat single that less than 70 miles per hour exit Velo.
So did not get all of that one by any means.
But it counts.
You know, how many of those types?
hits have we had to put up with as Cardinals fans this year that went against the Cardinals,
you know, it's about time we get a few of these. And that hit ends up knocking the giant
starter out. Jose Budo came in next and Yvonne Herrera greeted him with a base knock to right
field hit much harder than Newts, a 108 off the bat to make it two nothing. No one Gorman
then steps in, takes a four pitch walk to make it three to nothing. Base is still loaded. But we
are always reminded that this is the 20-25 Cardinals,
and one thing that they love to do is hit into double plays.
And you knew that eventually somebody was going to do it.
And inevitably, it was Mason Wend.
Mason Wend this time, grounds into the 463 D.P.
But it does bring in another run, makes it four to nothing,
and that becomes important.
So a productive out at least, put the ball in play,
didn't strike out, didn't line up,
got another run in, making it four to nothing.
That run will become very important.
more than later on because they would need it to finish this game off.
Now, the Cardinals, I mentioned the devil plays.
They have grounded into 100 of them hit the century mark in this game.
And that's the fifth highest total in Major League Baseball.
You trail the Blue Jays, we have 118.
They always put the ball in play.
The Astros at 113, A's and Pirates tied at 112, Rockies, Mets at 111, and then the Cardinals, Dodgers, at 100.
So it's kind of funny because you see Blue Jays.
Astros,
playoff teams, right?
A's and Pirates are not.
Rockies are not.
Mets,
playoff team probably, right?
And then the Cardinals and Dodgers,
Dodgers currently,
playoff team.
Cardinals currently not.
So Sunny now has this 4-0 lead,
right?
And he's cruising along,
and it feels like
this is kind of in the bag.
You know,
he's pitching brilliantly.
But then he commits the Cardinal send
of pitchers
and he walks the lead off hit.
in the top of the sixth.
And then he walks the next batter.
And you're like, uh-oh.
And I even tweeted out, I was like,
don't give it back, Sonny.
Well, they'll just give it back to the guys.
That's not good.
I do have, and this is the thing too,
is that where do I put this?
Anyway, there's a,
I could have sworn I downloaded the scorecard.
There it is.
Scott Berry's scorecard.
Okay.
I was like, wait a second.
It should be in here.
the umpire in those two advance to the first two hitters in the top of the sixth didn't do our boy
sunny gray any favors not at all in fact he kind of screwed this up and it's not showing up for some
reason i don't know okay i'm sorry but i had i had the scorecard ready to go i don't know why
it's not appearing on my screen right now it should be anyway what i want to say here is that
I was going to show the scorecard on YouTube.
I apologize.
But the MLB strike zone stuff.
So if you go to a game and you go to like, you know, hey, what happened to that,
whatever, you'll notice that three of the eight pitches that were called balls against
Sunny were actually strikes.
Okay?
They nipped the zone.
All right?
No, they weren't full blown into the zone, but you don't have to do that.
You just hit the zone.
You just got to touch it.
And that's a strike.
ABS would have had a field day with those pitches in this one, but it's not here for the big
leaguers yet.
only in the minor league so far.
So hopefully umpire Scott Barry gives the Giants two free runners.
All right.
And more times and not, these guys are going to come around and score.
And guess what?
They did.
Now, Barry's scorecard wasn't great, which is odd because he's actually one of the more accurate
umpires in the league.
94.5% accurate accuracy stat on umpscorecards.com.
But in this one, 79% strike accuracy.
94% on the balls says he missed just 7 of 190.
team, but three of them were on Sunny in those two at bats.
But either way,
Sully puts these guys on.
He's in a bind right away. It gets the Kay of Ramos,
the Raphael Devers, who owns the Cardinals this year.
He's hitting 455 against him with two home runs and nine RBIs
and just six games. He rips a single on a changeup that Sunny left right over the heart
of the plate. That's an RBI. Then you get the pass ball that moves both runners up to
second and third in a scoring position. Dominic Smith,
singles on a fastball right down Broadway, makes it 42, and that knocks Sunny out of the game.
And after the game, Sunny, you know, he called it his season in a nutshell.
Really, really good.
One really bad.
Lucky for him, Matt Sonson comes in.
He limits the remaining damage to one more run, and they escape still with the lead after that half inning, and it's four to three.
And it all goes back to the two walks.
You know, it all goes back to the two walks to the eight and nine hitters, too.
You know, did he get hosed on some of those?
calls. Yeah, I believe he did. But when you're up for nothing, you want to be aggressive,
specifically against the bottom of the order when they're coming up to the plate.
Calls didn't go his way. And that's how the trouble started. But it's a shame. It really is
because he was pitching so well and was very much dialed in. And according to these charts,
those pitches were strikes. So he was still dialed in. He was dotting.
zone. He's exactly where you need to be to get people out, but he didn't get the calls.
And that's how it started to unravel. And that sucks. That sucks. So again,
can't wait to see you real, real soon, ABS at the major league level. Credit to the bullpen,
though, sponsored Jojo Riley O'Brien, who was back this weekend after dealing with the shoulder
issue. Close things up over the final three and two-thirds innings to pick up the win.
O'Brien gets his third save, pitched it back-to-back game because he got the
win on Saturday. I was initially worried about a little rustiness with Riley O'Brien coming back
from the injury and he looked pretty good in both games. Cards went in four to three. They win their
third straight series after defeating the Cincinnati Reds and the A's in their previous series.
And with that impressive showing, did the Cardinals perhaps spark up some interest in a possible
trade with sunny gray in this offseason? I'll discuss what
I read and found out. Plus, we'll break down the rest of the series and why. What they just did was more impressive than you think, at least to me. We'll get to it next on Locked on Gardens. After the game yesterday in which Sunny Gray won his 13th game of the year,
matching his win total from last year and just won off his career high win total of 14,
which he did twice with the Oakland days back in the day.
Susan Slusher, who writes for the San Francisco Chronicle, wrote some interesting words about Sunny Gray when describing their loss against the Cardinals yesterday.
And she said that Sunny is on the Giants radar and very much a potential target for the club this off season.
Now, the Giants have Logan Webb and Robbie Ray under contract for next year.
as like in the rotation, ready to go.
Justin Verlander is going to be a free agent.
It's very well against the Cardinals on Saturday.
It was awesome.
So it sounds like it would be a good fit to bring in another veteran,
like a Sunny Gray type of person.
That seems to make sense.
But there's a couple of hurdles for something like that to even come close to happening.
The biggest one being that Sunny Gray has no trade clause.
And if he doesn't want to go there,
He doesn't have to go there.
The Cardinals had reached out to him before about possibly moving him to another team.
And so far, Sunny has not shown any interest in going anywhere else.
Could that change this off season?
Sure.
But so far hasn't shown any inkling that he wants to pack up his bags and get out of St. Louis.
Second issue, when Sunny signed with the Cardos, remember one of the big selling points for choosing St. Louis was its proximity to where his family lives,
which is in Nashville.
Now, I know Sonny played in Oakland when he first came up,
so he spent time in the Bay Area before,
but if being closer to home is still in his best interest
than San Francisco is one of the last places that he would want to go to,
he would prefer probably another Midwest team,
probably something closer to the East Coast
when you're talking about Nashville, Tennessee.
Third thing is, the money on the contract that Sunny still has
is not cheap.
Sunny is set to make $35 million next year as part of that backloaded three-year deal
that most signed him to in 2024.
It also has a $30 million club option for 2027 that includes a $5 million buyout if it's not
picked up.
And those $5 million are deferred over five years from 27 to 31.
But that's basically saying that, you know, $40 million for Sunny Gray next year is what
you're signing up for.
if you're a team that wants to trade for him and possibly $65 million for two years,
if someone traded for him and then wanted to do the club option and keep them around.
That's a lot of things that have to take place to just get a deal done.
A lot of things.
A lot of things have to get worked out.
And then you have to figure out, you know, what are the Cardinals looking for in return?
Are they going to eat some of the money on that?
Like, is that something they're even interested in doing
or are they just rather keep Sunny all together
and just paying for his last year and then have it all be done?
Again, unless Sunny has had a change apart,
and once out, this is all just gossip anyway.
Like, none of it really matters.
It's something that I'm sure will be visited in the offseason.
And Heim Bloom will have to make a decision
and see if he can talk sunny into taking a deal somewhere else.
Mo was not very good at doing it when it came to Gray or Contreras or Aronado.
Things did not go the way that perhaps they wanted them to.
The guys didn't want to leave.
They were like, no, we're happy.
We're going to, we want to be here.
We want to be a part of this.
I know we're not supposed to say rebuild, but it is a rebuild.
But any, things can change.
but it seems like a long shot to me.
Just talking it out, saying it out loud,
just feels like a long shot to me
that that would be something that Sunny would be interested in.
But we'll see.
As far as the rest of the weekend, when,
got some news and notes here,
things I just kind of picked up on Michael McGreevy.
Tough outing on Friday, right?
And that's going to happen with Michael McGreevy.
Giants have been swinging it quite well.
McGreeby's a pitched contact guy.
It's not surprising they roughed him up a little bit.
It's one of the reasons.
why as solid as McGreevy has been, and I'm not saying I'm down on the dude, but as solid as he's
been, I'm not sure what his ceiling really is. Like, I don't know how good he can be because
he's another pitcher that's in that mold of pitch to contact, in the Fettys and the Michaelis's,
and the Palantes, you know, is that what you want is another one of those guys? They rely on
contact instead of strikeouts and missing bats. Again, I'm not trying to take anything away from him
because they're winning ball games when McGreevy is pitching.
And it's usually the first couple of innings are the problem with McGreevy.
And then he's really good after that.
So I don't know, iron some stuff out.
Maybe he can be better than what he's showing now, which hasn't been that bad.
But it's a tough night for him on Friday.
Speaking of Palante, a much better performance for him on Saturday,
just two runs over six innings, 10 ground ball outs and just two flyouts to go along with three Ks.
He had one walk.
We know how bad it's been for Andre, who still hasn't won a ballgame since July 28
and has just two wins at his last 14 starts.
So we know it's been ugly.
We know it's been rough.
It's not been fun.
So any positives are welcome.
And Saturday was a good night for Andre Palante.
So I hope he feels good about himself.
And for once doesn't, you know, look like he's just lost coming off the mountain.
He's like, I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I don't know how to fix it.
that was a positive outing.
Didn't get the win.
That's okay, though.
The team got the win.
That's what's most important.
And Andre pitched well.
All right.
So good for him.
Hopefully he can do it again in his next outing and kind of replicate those things.
And then, of course, the Jordan Walker walkoff hit.
Like, how much fun was that, guys?
How much fun was that?
Obviously a big moment for him.
Big moment for him and the team.
You know, we've had all this talk going on recently about what's, is he,
absorbing things properly.
Is he making the adjustments he needs
to? Is he putting in the work that he
needs to? A lot of second guessing
on what Jordan is and isn't doing
right now. Can't be easy on the
young man at age 23. And I know we're in a business
where we want results
and if we're not
getting them, people want you out and
don't feel bad about it at all.
But I think the majority of fans,
the majority of people that are in this
organization, they want this guy to succeed
in a major, major way. They like this.
kid. He's a good kid. We're rooting for him. I'm rooting for him. I think most of you are rooting
for him as well. We want to see him do well and see him come through in big moments and to see him
have that clutch moment against a tough riding and Ryan Walker, dude. That guy is no walk on the
park for a right-ender. That was such a relief, you know, just like, oh, good for him. You know,
you can see the love that the boys have for him in the celebration and how the whole team came up,
and rallied after him.
And I love that the media, the social media team after games,
like when they have the guys coming back to the clubhouse from the dugout,
and they have them saying stuff to the camera and whatnot.
And, you know, everybody's saying positive things about Palante and Jordan Walker.
And it's good to see.
You know, this is a group that's growing together.
And, you know, Palante's not some old man that they're just going to kick to the curb.
This is a guy they want to be around.
They want him to be better.
Jordan Walker. They want him around. They just want him to be better. But a big moment for a player who we're hoping will be a major piece of turning things around in 2026 and beyond. And finally, I wanted to point this out too and why I feel like this was a more impressive series than the guys are getting much credit for.
mentioned how the Giants came in playing so well.
And I mean, they were like 9 and 1 in their last 10 and 112 of 30.
Something's sorry.
But for the Cardinals to get bashed in on Friday night,
to never be in that game.
And then to come back and win two tight ball games
against a good San Francisco Giants team
that's playing even better than maybe what they are right now.
But to take two of three and do it without,
Wilson Contreras, whose suspension started, to do it without Brendan Donovan and Nolan Aronado,
Alec Berluson. All these guys are injured, right? It's got to make you feel pretty good.
You've got to make you smile a little bit. You know, a lot of young guys coming together,
doing the small things right, as Ali mentioned, and you're getting outstanding work from
your two starters in Saturday and Sunday, in Palante and Sunny Gray.
And the bullpen, the bullpen.
Yeah, they got roughed up a little bit,
Ryan Fernandez and company.
Those are the back into the road,
you know, those are the bottom of the rotation,
or the bottom of the bullpen guys.
When they're losing, those are the guys who come back.
But to see the other guys continue to succeed on Saturday and Sunday,
the, you know, Sphonson and Leahy and Jojo and Riley O'Brien,
those four guys have been pretty darn good, you know.
So to see them chugging along, despite losing three of their top arms at the deadline,
there are positives about this Cardinals team, you know, and you should point,
I want to point them out when they happen.
So there you go.
Those are the good things that I saw this weekend.
Can they keep it going?
It won't be easy.
They got another major test beginning tonight in Seattle.
We'll discuss that next coming up on Lockstone Cardinals.

Peppermint, watermelon, ice.
Yeah, buddy.

You get a little energy boost.
They taste great.
You got flavors like cinnamon.
You got bourbon as well, which I haven't tried yet.

But peppermint watermelon ice has been so good.
It's so good.

So the Seattle Mariners are primed for a long playoff run.
They had a very good team before the deadline.
Then they added, Eh, E. E. E. E. Hainio Svarez and Josh Naylor from the Diamondbacks,
add even more pop to that lineup that already features catcher Cal Raleigh,
who is a platinum glove winning catcher and has set the home run record for a catcher in a season this year
and is still going. He's neck and neck for the ALNVP, along with the Yankees-Ary judge.
Cal Raleigh is my pick personally. All the respect of the world, Aaron Judge. But to be a
catcher, to have to do everything that you have to do as a catcher, to know your pitching staff,
to know that team's roster and how they hit, to have all of that going on and still to be
clubbing 50-plus home runs and doing what he's doing offensively, that's my MVP. And to have it on a
team that is currently in a playoff spot.
The M's are back home for the first time this month after a two and four road trip
where they, to start the month of September, where they got swept by the raise.
And then won the final two games over the Braves after losing the first one.
So they had lost four in a row.
But then they won the next two over the Braves, a combined score of 28 to 4.
Yeah, yeah, 28.
Yes, that's the right number.
28 to 4 in the last two games.
They scored 10 on Saturday.
18 on Sunday.
Their young superstar, Julio Rodriguez, who I don't know, he's got out a down year overall
compared to where we thought he'd be at this point in his career, but he's still a stud.
He's on a tear right now hitting 333 with four home runs and 11 RBI.
This is in his last five games.
You got Raleigh-Swarres, Nailer.
They're all massive bats in that lineup.
But they've also got switch hitting second baseman Jorge Polanco.
They've got former Cardo Rani or Rosarena, who you just know is going to be primed to light up the
former team that traded him away to the raise, oh, so many years ago and set his career
up for success as he just took off. As soon as he got Tampa Bay, wow, came a superstar.
So that offense is pretty stacked in Seattle. The pitching features some of the top young,
young arms in the game. They got an outstanding closer in Munoz. The rotation, they've got
great arms. Some of them have had some issues this year, but Monday starter is not one of them.
Brian, who is 12 and 7 with an ERA at 3.02.
Very consistent because deep in game, not a huge strikeout guy,
but has easily been their most consistent starter all year.
Miles Michaelis will get the nod for the Cardinals,
and he's been very good in his last two outings against Pittsburgh and the A's.
11 innings, just two runs, one home run, ERA, 1.64.
Seattle's home stadium of Team Mobile Park, pitchers ballpark,
pitchers ballpark.
So perhaps Miles will be safe pitching there.
But you see all that thump in the lineup, and I fear the worst for tonight's game,
especially after seeing them light up the scoreboard against the Braves in their last two games.
So keep the ball down miles.
Keep it in the ballpark if you can, buddy.
Cardinals are back at 500 at 72 and 72.
They're four and a half back in the wild card while the Mariners.
Second of the AOS at 75 and 68.
They're two and a half back of Houston in the division,
but currently reside in that third and final AAL wildcard spot.
but they're a game and a half up on the Texas Rangers.
So they've got plenty to play for in the series.
Motivation is not going to be a problem.
Can the Cardinals continue their spoiling ways?
We shall find out.
There was some roster news that hasn't officially,
I'll let me double check it just to make sure,
see if it officially took place yet.
But I don't see it yet.
Katie Wu from The Athletic tweeted out last night
that Alec Burleson should be activated and back in the lineup for the Cardinals, which is good news.
Garrett Hampson is getting DFAed and that Andre Greenio is going back to Memphis, while Nick Rake will join the club.
29-year-old lefty, former third-round pick in 2017 by the Nationals, was 8-1.
Had fallen all the way to independent ball, 8-1 at Springfield this year with a 0.77 ERA,
He's a left-hander, 25 appearances, a bullpen guy, two and three, four-point-05 ERA at Memphis
and 11 games, but he did have a strikeouts per nine of 12.8.
So another arm in the pin to take a look at as we make our way down the final stretch here
of the season.
So congratulations to Nick Rakeh, making the big league club and making it to the major leagues.
Good for you.
Speaking of lefties, Liam Doyle, fifth overall pick in this year's draft, made his debut
on Saturday, inning into.
two-thirds for Class A Palm Beach.
Did allow a home run, hung a slider,
walked two guys, but he did strikeout three.
He was very amped up watching the footage.
I was like, whoa.
He looked like he did in college, though.
Like, that's just what he does.
He's got a bounce to him.
He's got a swagger to him when he's on the mound.
42 pitches and Palm Beach is three to two win over Daytona.
So Liam Doyle, often running at the professional level.
So that's it for us today.
