The St. Louis Cardinals unloaded a lot of talent and money to boost their rebuilding efforts in
26. So how did those trades work out for both sides who are involved? We'll discuss those today
on Locked on Cardinals. You are Locked on Cardinals, your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the
Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey there, Carls fans. I'm J.D. Haffern.
And today's show is brought to you by Fandul. It's time to put your knowledge to the
the test with college football pick them from Fandall download the Fandall app today on today's show the
springfield cardinals had a winner take all game for the texas league championship uh memphis needed to win to
continue their season and the cardinals faced the pirates in matthew libertor's final start of the year
but let's start with what was going on with this franchise even before this season began
aka the off season you know this off season was a really tough one for myself and a lot of cardinals
fans because for the first time in a really long time, the primary goal wasn't to necessarily
win as many baseball games as you could. It was it was not when it all costs this offseason.
That don't get me wrong. It's not like they were trying to win or trying to lose. They weren't
tanking or anything like that. Cardals don't want to lose, but they were willing to sacrifice
more wins so that they could see what some of the younger and cheaper players,
in their system could do if they didn't have veterans already playing in their positions
ahead of them and essentially blocking them from getting more playing time.
Now, I was fully on board with this.
In fact, I wanted them to pull the trigger on this idea in 2024.
But certain players didn't want to be traded.
That's what was reported.
Like, some people weren't sold on it.
They didn't want to leave.
They enjoyed where they were.
So they didn't feel like waving their no trade clauses.
And so the Cardinals kind of went through the motions for another season,
hoping that those veterans would, you know, lift them to be playoff contenders and play in a
playoff level.
And that just didn't happen.
It did.
They put up a good fight, but they weren't nearly good enough.
They didn't have the pitching.
They didn't have enough offense.
And since they weren't winning with these expensive veterans, the thought was, if, you know,
if we're going to lose it anyway.
we might as well find some things out about these younger guys while we do that.
Could some of the younger guys develop into legit big league players with more playing
time or would they shrink and wither away?
You're also trying to do these vets as solid as well.
You're not in a win now mode in St. Louis.
Some of these guys are at points in their careers where they only got a couple seasons left, probably.
So you want to spend them here?
doing what we're doing to better the franchise moving forward,
or would you like to go play for a shot at the postseason?
Somebody else who's got a better chance.
So it's not like they were trying to send these guys to Colorado or to the A's.
They were trying to do good for everyone around,
which I think the guys appreciated.
So traded away were the big names like Nolan Aronado,
Sunny Gray, Wilson Contreras, Bernardino.
Those were the big four.
And then at the deadline, you also saw
the move on from Dustin May, Jojo Romero, and Lars Newport.
Now, a lot of money was taken off the payroll.
Now, they did have to kick in money for some of these guys to go
and to complete trades to get better players in return.
And they do that with the upcoming labor war pending.
You know, the Cardinals were creating what might be cap space at one point.
We'll see if it ever comes to fruition.
They're going to duke it out this offseason.
and we'll see if it happens.
But that's something that they'll have if that's what ends up coming to fruition.
And it's also giving full-time roles to some of their homegrown talent.
And at the same time, pulling in some much needed prospects to reboot this FART system,
which had become extremely stale and didn't have a lot going for me.
It was a couple of years ago where the cupboard was empty.
There just wasn't a lot left in there.
They were lacking in a number of different areas,
specifically in the pitching department.
They just did not have enough arms.
The Cardinals needed arms, both for the future and for the president.
So the first guy out the board was Sunny Gray,
who ends up going to Boston on November the 25th.
And he goes in exchange for three pitchers.
Richard Fitz, Brandon Clark, and a player to be named later,
which ended up becoming Patrick Galley,
I think is how he pronounces his name.
Fitz, as we know, got hurt in the spring, was lost for the entire season.
So that was a big bummer because we saw some good things out of him in the spring.
Should be healthy and ready to go when ball resumes next season.
Brandon Clark was also hurt.
But since he's been back, has been very impressive.
And then you got Galley who was a reliever at A ball.
Meanwhile, Sunny Gray has had one hell of a season.
18 and 5 record 2.72 ERA.
Those 18 wins are currently tied for the league lead with the Phillies Christopher Sanchez,
number one in the AL.
He's certainly going to get some well-deserved AL-Sai Young votes,
which he's done previously when he was in Minnesota, most recently.
So, Sunny Gray, that was one hell of a deal for Boston.
You know, they got a guy that, because, I mean, they didn't know Garrett Crochet was going to go down.
So it's been on sunny gray shoulders pretty much the whole time.
And he is delivered in a huge way for them.
Wilson Contreras was the next piece.
Also goes to Boston.
Remember, we're making all the jokes like, hey, I'm.
You can trade with other people.
But that was December 21st.
And in exchange, they get three more pitchers in return.
Hunter Dobbins, Joyker Fouharto, and Blake Ida.
And Dobbins, who was having a very solid season until he hurt his elbow and has now gone for 12 months.
that sucks, but we saw some really good stuff from him while he was healthy.
Fuhardo and Ida are with Springfield or were with Springfield.
Their season has come to an end.
But Contreras has been a monster for them as well.
Hitting 276, 27 bombs, 81 ribbies, OPS plus 154.
I mean, both he and Gray, you can make an argument,
have been the best players on their team this year.
two of the you could certainly say that there are two of the big reasons that the Red Sox are even going to the postseason this year.
They had that horrid start and it looked like things are going to be very bleak for Boston.
And then they turn that thing around.
So the injuries to Fitz and Dobbins are unfortunate, but that's part of the game.
Pitches get hurt all the time.
But at least Fitz, Dobbins, Clark, Fahardo, Ida.
They appear to be a part of this Cardinals rebuild.
Like they're going to be important pieces here moving forward.
and Brandon Clark looks like he could be something very special moving forward.
The real bummer deal of the offseason of my mind was the trade that sent Nolan Aronado
to the Diamondbacks in exchange for just a minor league pitcher in Jack Martinez.
The definition of a salary dump here because the Cardinals also sent $31 million to Arizona,
essentially paying Arizona to take Nolan Aranaato, which is something I never thought the Cardinals would have to do.
And although Nato has lost a step over at third base, not quite as quick as he used to
and the bat didn't appear to have the pop that it used to have.
I always loved Arnaud was a player in a person.
I really didn't want to see him go.
And had always hoped he'd finish his career in St. Louis,
but he deserved a chance to play for a winner.
He does not have a ring.
And the change of scenery ended up being great for him.
Last check, he was hitting 251, 28 home runs, 80 RBIs,
plus three outs above average over at third base.
I mean, he'd hit a combined 28 home runs over the last two seasons.
with the Cardinals.
Perhaps another victim of Bush Stadium.
The dive-back's still in the wildcard race
after beating Colorado on Wednesday, by the way.
They're hanging in there.
They're probably not going to make it,
but they're hanging in there.
And then you got Brinandman.
And Brin Donovan's kind of the saddest one.
He goes to Seattle on February 2nd
and a three-team deal with Tampa Bay.
Not sad because of what the Cardinals got,
but just how things have gone for Donnie
since the trade went down.
They get pitchers,
or Angelo Sanger. They get Tai Pete, Colton Ledbetter, and two compie picks that they used to draft
outfielder Andrew Williamson and pitcher Dawson Montessa. This was the three-team deal with Tampa Bay.
The Mariners have just been a very disappointing team all year, all year. They just have not been
able to put it together. One of the big reasons why things haven't worked out so well is because
Brin Donovan has been on the field. He's been hurt almost all year. 39 games. That's all
to Donovan has played this year.
39.
277 average three home runs,
15 RBIs was productive while he was out there,
but he just kept missing time over and over early on.
Remember he had the hernia surgery in the offseason.
So they think that that's probably why he had so many issues.
He missed time with a leg injury,
that he had an illness,
then he had a hip issue,
and then it was a growing injury that knocked him out,
not once but twice this year.
First time for 17 games,
next time, way longer 66 games.
then in August he gets hit in the head by a ball during live batting practice,
suffers a concussion, which ends his season.
So this one definitely has not worked out for Seattle, at least not this year.
They still got them for another year after this, I think, at least one more.
But the Cardinals have enjoyed what we've seen from the guys they got.
St. Joe was promoted to AAA.
Tai Pete was awesome after his promotion to Springfield.
it became their leadoff hitter and was really, really good,
while Ledbetter had a very respectable season with Memphis as well.
So that's a pretty good trade.
You know, it sucks saying goodbye to these guys, these veterans,
and you wonder if Gray and Nato, what if they had stuck around?
You could trade Wilson, Catreras, and you could trade Donovan.
But what have you kept Gray and Nata?
What if they had stuck around?
How would that have affected things for the Cardinals this year?
Would they be in playoff contention?
Or would they have just continued to suffer because they were,
were playing in St. Louis instead of somewhere else, which kind of rejuvenated them.
Either way, outside of the Donnie deal, I think all of them look good for both sides.
And that's kind of what the goal is when you make deals.
The goal is not to rip the other guy off.
I mean, you hope to have the strongest return you can get.
But at the same time, you're hoping that it's a good business deal for everybody involved.
And hopefully, Don has a better career moving forward with Seattle.
And I think that all of these trades seem pretty good.
Leave me your comments in the comments section on what you think.
What do you think of the trades?
What do you give the grades to the trades now that you've seen almost the full season completed here?
We're going to talk about the Cardinals' offense coming to life in Pittsburgh next.

Thanks for making Locktown, Cardinals, your first listen of the day.
Thank you for making Lacton, the number one sports podcast network.
Now, after getting just one hit on Tuesday night,
the Cardinals were hoping to churn out a little more offense on Wednesday.
Just a little bit.
You know, two hits.
That would be nice.
Some runs, even better.
It was also Matthew Levertoires final start of the 2026 season,
which we all know has been a big disappointment,
considering he was your opening day starter.
This was the guy you thought,
hey,
could lead this whole rotation.
Didn't work out.
Ops were high for Libby,
but it was always that one bad inning
that seemed to continuously haunt him and start,
something he'll strive to avoid during this off season,
that's for sure.
So pirates get on the board first on a home run by Brandon Lowe
to lead off that second inning.
Now, granted,
Lowe has had a very nice season
in Pittsburgh. You know, that's now 34
D-Gingers on the year for him, which is
by far and away the most by any qualified
second baseman. Second most is 26.
Anybody? Anybody?
Roger Clemens' kid,
Cody Clements in Minnesota.
Didn't see that one coming, did you?
But the home run, you know,
fastball up in the zone,
it's another thing that Libby's going to
need to work on. Way too many
home runs given up this year. This one made
28, which, you know,
which places him at the seventh highest total,
given up in the major leagues this season,
seven more than Michael McGreevy,
who's second on the Cardinal staff with 21.
So it just didn't matter whether it was at home or away.
You know,
in fact,
most of the home runs he gave up were at Bush.
17 of them hit at Bush Stadium.
It just like, if he misses over the heart of the plate,
boof, the opponent is going to match the hell out of it.
So cards are down one or nothing early, but credit to Libby because normally this is when we see things spiral out of control.
He gives up the two-out double.
And then it's a two-out sing on you're like, oh, boy, here we go.
All you've got to do is give up another dinger and we're in it.
And instead, because it felt like we were going there, instead he gets out of it.
No more damage.
And the offense rewards him in the third inning.
You get a one-out single by J.J. Weatherholt, who starts the whole thing.
thing, then a walk by Yvonne Herrera.
And then it's that man again.
Alec Berlinson drives in JJ with a single to center, RBI 112,
which continues to lead Major League Baseball, makes it first and third.
Cards get the gift of a wild pitch, which brings in another run.
They take the lead two to one.
And then it's the rookie, Leo Bernal, delivering with a two out,
hit the center field to make it three to one.
What do you guys think Leo Bernal is hitting so far this season with runners in
scoring position?
If you guessed 435, you're the winner.
You're the winner.
Go to the info booth, grab a prize because that's insane.
Now it's not going to always be that way.
But my gosh, is there another guy in this lineup besides Burleson
that you won at the plate in a situation where you need a hit?
Not me.
Give me burn off.
Libby then puts up a zero on the bottom half,
which we know is always key for momentum purposes.
Cards reward them again in the fourth for me and gets that lead off double.
Mason Wynne shoots one to the right field gap for an RBI devil to make it four to one.
Very nice to bat there by Mason Wynne.
He feels like he's got more in the tank offensively.
I don't know how to get it out of them, but it feels like there's more there.
You see if bats like that, you're like, why can't we get more of that?
He's followed by another RBI single by J.J. Weatherholt, his third knock of the night,
makes it five to one, and that's how this one would end.
Three stars of the game, I want to show some love to the bullpen, the combination of Luis Gaston,
Stannick and Soriano go three and a third shit out innings.
They allow no hits.
Only one walk.
So one person reaches base against them.
And that's obviously getting it done for a bullpen that is just completely gassed at this point of the season.
Your second star, we're going to go with one J.J. Weatherhole.
J.J. was really, really good in this one.
And you're starting to see him take better at bats.
He's starting to look a bit healthier after being out with the wrist injury, the tendonitis that was bothering him.
So three for four runs scored, an RBI tends to do well in Pittsburgh.
So this is on par for what we've seen from JJ so far in his first season in the big
league.
So shout out to him.
First start of the game, though, Matthew Libertor.
Give it up for Libby.
Five and two thirds innings, one run, six hit, six strikeouts, picks up his sixth win of the season.
Okay, that's six, six, six.
That's a little devilish.
I didn't even mean to do that.
But it also ended a streak of 11 consecutive starts without a win for Matthew Libertory.
He's going to finish with a record of 6 and 14 on the season, which is terrible.
That is not what we want to see.
But we've seen some progress here at the end of the season.
His last two starts, he's allowed only two runs over a combined 11 and two-thirds
innings.
Last year, I was ready to launch Andre Palante to the moon.
I didn't want anything to do with them.
him, hey, you want to make him into a reliever.
Maybe he can help you there.
Go for it.
But I was done with him as a starter.
And I was completely wrong.
Andre Palante proved a lot of us wrong this season.
So I am willing to go another round with Matthew Libertor.
Because I've seen games where he looks phenomenal and has been dominant.
And then you see the one games where, you know, it's the one inning that gets out of hand.
and you see the slumping and you just see the body language where he's like,
I'm defeated.
I just got to stop that.
Him and his buddy Nolan Gorman both have that problem,
where it just looks, they don't ever look like they're having fun.
It's a game.
Games are meant to be fun.
So have some fun out there, boys.
But yeah, we'll see.
I'm sure they're going to give Libby another crack at the rotation.
And if he beats out whoever is competing with him, then he earns it.
But he's got to earn it.
can't just give him a spot next year.
Also, congrats to Yvonne Herrera.
Slow clap for Yvonne, hit by a pitch for the 30 first time this season,
which now ties the franchise record set by Steve Evans in 1910.
Yvonne watch is on.
Let's get them one more.
Let's not get him hurt.
Let's get them one more.
Let's set the record.

Thank you again for making lots on Cardinals.
Your first list of the day.
Thank you for making Locktown on the number one sports podcast network.
Oh, Springfield Cardinals.
You had it, man.
You had it.
That was frustrating to watch.
So you got your top pitching prospect and Liam Doyle on the mountain.
you got your top hitting prospect in Rainier Rodriguez over at first base,
which he does not belong there.
He did not look comfortable at all.
He had the one player where he went over the railing in the dugout.
I thought he was going to break his neck.
That didn't look great.
That didn't look comfortable.
But you had these guys.
You had this great lineup.
You got all this talent and they didn't get it done.
Doyle pitched great, five innings, one earned run.
It was honored, actually.
earned one run it was unearned uh four hits six strikeouts leaves the game with a three to one lead
look good he gave you what you needed that offense combined with a bullpen that you know but still
you got that offense and you should you should win these games right they've that's how they've done it
all year three to one lead was thanks to a radio rodriguez two run bomb that
It was like his moment, gave him the lead, had an amazing bat flip.
Him and Jesus got to be competing for bat flip God on the team because they know how to celebrate.
But the defense, man, it doesn't matter what level of baseball you play, right?
Pitching in defense, it's going to take you a long way.
And the defense in the sixth inning completely let them down.
You had an error on a throw by Jesus Bayez at shortstop.
Wasn't a tough play.
Poles Rodriguez off the bag.
Would a more accomplished first baseman been able to stay on the bag?
I don't know. Maybe.
But it did happen.
So E6.
And then Wanben-cho misplays a fly ball.
And I know it was windy there.
But like he looked like he'd never tracked a fly ball in his life.
It was terrible.
Turns what should have been an out in right field into a double,
which makes it second and third.
they get a bad call because they make a really nice relay.
Wambon show throws it in.
It's a relay man.
They go to third.
Guy was out.
Umpire calls him safe.
They don't have replay.
I don't have challenges for stuff like that at AA.
He's got to live with the call like he used to.
So that cost him an out.
And but this is what sparked the Amarillo team to Stormback.
They end up tying it.
Base hit scores two runs right after that.
Eventually they take the lead and I think it was the seventh inning on a two run,
bomb off Clemente, who hung one and it got destroyed.
I think it was like 4.30.
And they go on to upset Springfield 6 to 4.
Did not see that coming.
Two errors in the game cost them two runs.
But the Wambin show thing, that wasn't even an error.
They didn't count that as an error, but it should have been.
It was awful.
And he had a nightmare night.
And it sucked, too, because at the beginning of the game,
he makes this amazing catch in right field.
And after that, it was, he had two walls.
of the game, but ends up going 0 for three with three strikeouts.
And the last two times it came up, left the small village on the base pass.
Struck out twice.
So tough night for Juan Ben Cho.
If you know Juan Ben Cho, give the man a hug.
Tell him there are going to be better days.
But tonight was not his night.
The team goes one for 12 with runners in scoring position.
One night after getting shut out four to nothing, really tough time for the bats to go cold.
But you got to give credit to Amarillo.
They got it done.
what might have been, right? Memphis. Maybe it was Memphis's fault. They took the office
mojo because they went off in game two of their series on Wednesday night. 15 to 4 was the
final. Jimmy Crooks sits at home run, drives in five to lead the way on the mound. Mason
Molina, five shutout innings. He allows one hit, strikes out six in the victory. There will be a
decisive winner take-all international league championship series game on Thursday night at AutoZone Park.
Memphis against Rochester.

we now need to switch it over to Memphis because they got a bunch of guys that
maybe aren't big leaguers, but they're not double A players.
So they got some decent pieces, but now we got to support them.
They're the underdogs now, right?
So let's go support Memphis now.
First pitch will be at 645 St. Louis time.
