The Cardinals got Brewered again, and I've now lost three in a row.
Are they just facing great pitchers or is this the beginning of something much worse?
We'll debate that next on Locked on Cardinals.
You are Locked on Cardinals.
Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network,
your team every day.
Hey there, Cardinals fans.
I'm J.D. Hafford on today's show.
We're going to get into Crotch, Chop, Gate, which is making things.
A little more fun, a little more spicy between the Cardinals and the Brewers.
I'm not against that.
We've got another update on Lars Newbar's rehab situation.
How close is he to actually joining the team?
But we begin after another tough one against the Brewers,
where the Cardinals once again fell victim to Brewers baseball.
You know, coming into the series,
we knew that the pitching matchups favored Milwaukee.
You'd take Jacob Mizorowski over just about any pitcher in the league
right now. And then you've got Kyle Harrison. Although he doesn't throw 103 miles per hour,
he's been almost as stingy when it comes to runs against him in the month of May.
Now, Ms. had given up none going into his start on Monday. Harrison had given up three,
but none in his last two starts. Well, we can make it three now because the Cardinals had
very little success against him on Tuesday night as the birds get shut out six nothing. They've
not lost three in a row and have been shut out three times in their last eight games.
And there are different ways to look at this.
Number one, you can say the Cardinals have run into some really good pitching over the last eight games.
And even the best lineups in baseball have struggled and would have struggled against the guys they faced.
Number two, the Cardinals' offense is in a bit of a funk.
and that along with the good pitching that they face has made them look worse than they really are.
Number three, the offense really isn't as good as we think it is.
And they are finally getting exposed for all the holes they have in their lineup.
And then you've got number four, which is all the above.
Now, honestly, I want to go with number four because I think it's a little bit of everything,
but I feel like it's more of a combination of number one and two than it is that this offense is actually not very good at all.
Because I don't really feel that way.
I feel like part of the offense is good, just not all of it.
We've been able to watch this team and see this offense, find some creative ways to score runs outside of the unexpected power that they've been able to produce so far this season.
I don't think any of us thought we'd see as many home runs as the Cardinals of him.
so far and we thought they'd have to find different ways to score runs.
And I feel like lately they haven't been doing that at all.
I feel like it's been more reliant on home runs than it has been bunting or, you know,
doing the little things on offense to get runners over stealing bases.
It just feels that way.
And it's because they haven't really been scoring nearly as much.
You know, they'll have like one good game and then they go, they go quiet for a couple of times.
but every team is going to go through their lulls during 162 games.
No offense is immune to that.
All of them will struggle from time to time.
And I know this is going to sound kind of like an excuse.
And I'm a pretty positive guy about things that are going on with the Cardinals.
In games where the offense has really struggled,
where you see it like these shutout games that we've been seeing,
Royals, pirates,
brewers,
they've had to face some guys
that have been dominating
lineups across the league.
This is not just,
oh, randomly the Cardinals face a guy
and he just goes
amazing against him.
They're just like,
he's untouchable out of nowhere.
Now, Stephen Kolek
is the one that feels kind of that way,
the guy with the royals
that shut him out on that Sunday.
He was not doing
all that well coming into that Cardinals game. Like things, he was pretty hitable. But he fires off six
and a third shutout innings. Remember, it was a lot of ground balls. And that game going in and then his next
game, he throws nine shutout innings against the Mariners. So it's not like after that he just
started getting hit again. No, he fires a nine inning shutout game against the, the Meritors,
complete game shutout. So something's working for him. Something has clicked, including the Cardinals
game where he threw five shutout innings. The Pirates, Carmen Magensky, has an ERA of 2.14 and has
only allowed five earned runs over his last 21 innings. So he's in the middle of a bit of a heater.
After Tuesday's game against Chicago, the Pirates Braxton Ashcraft, is now 3 and 0 with an
area of 1.82 over five starts in the month of May. Again, a guy who is on.
on a heater at the moment. We covered how nasty the miss has been this month in yesterday's
episode. Did that thoroughly, but if you need a refresher, 4-0, ERA of 0.29 and 49 strikeouts
in five starts in May, virtually unhittable. Cardinals got to run against him. Nobody else
had done that this month. And now you go up against Kyle Harrison, who is five in no in his last
seven starts, hasn't been scored upon in his last 18 innings. So it isn't just the
Cardinals, where these pictures come in and they've been getting roughed up and all of a sudden they get to face this very weak Cardinals offense and they're able to go right through them.
It's not just the Cardinals who have had trouble against these guys. These are five of the hottest pitchers in the league right now.
And the Cardinals just so happened to be facing all of them during this stretch of games, where they have now lost six of their last eight.
and five of those losses have come against divisional opponents,
which, you know, that's a kick in the, you know what.
But we also need to be honest with ourselves.
We can't just say, well, holy crap, look at these pictures.
We've got to be honest with ourselves.
And as much fun as this team has been this season,
it's not a great offense.
They got some pieces, right?
Specifically, your top four hitters in the lineup,
JJ, Yvonne, Burley, Walker, they've been very, very good.
I think we can all agree that those guys, those dudes are legit.
But after that, it's quite the drop off.
You know, the normal number five hitter is usually Gorman,
who's hitting 206 this month.
Six ribbies, 23Ks, and 68 at bats.
Only two home runs.
Number six hitter, normally is Mason win.
He's hit in 200 in the month of May.
He's got an OBP at 276.
Number seven hitter, Nathan Church usually.
He's hurt right now.
Only three RBIs.
He had an OVP under 300.
for the month of May before he went down with the shoulder injury.
Your number eight header, normally Pedro Pahas more times than not,
batting 152 this month with one RBI in 14 games.
And then your number nine hitter, Victor Scott, is under 200 on the year,
but is actually hitting a little bit better in the month of May at 222.
But the LBP is still under 300, which you don't want.
You can't run if you aren't on base,
which eliminates his most dangerous web.
in, which is his legs. He's got two stolen bases in the month of May. He's also been caught twice.
So he's not helping us out anywhere there. So yes, the Cardinals have faced some elite arms
over this stretch of games where they have stumbled a bit. But half their lineup hasn't been
very good so far this season either. So when the Cardinals are at their most efficient, like most
lineups, you're getting production from a lot of different people at the same time. And when the
Cardinals had been winning ball games, you're seeing guys like Gorman in church.
And even Pedro Pajas from the time to time and Victor Scott,
and you're seeing these guys chip in.
But like right now, it's not happening.
So top four guys in the order have been really, really good.
Five through nine have been really, really bad as a unit.
And none of it's working right now because even the top guys aren't having as much success.
And again, you got to give credit to the, the,
the pitchers and the guys that this team is facing.
But at the same time, somebody's got to step up.
So it's just not clicking right now.
It's not happening.
And they've run into some very hot pitchers.
You know, again, it happens during the season.
You're going to have the ups and downs,
the roller coaster of 162.
It's going to happen.
So we don't want to get too bent out of shape about all of this.
It's frustrating, obviously.
But again, especially these last two games,
like Ms. and Harrison are two of the best pitchers in the league right now.
So to get shut down by them, you're kind of like, that's what they do.
Got to make up for it on Wednesday, right?
That's the idea.
We need to talk specifically about the game on Tuesday night still, though.
We're not done with that.
We've got to talk about Michael McGreevy.
One bad inning.
One bad inning.
And all of it unraveled for McGreevy in the bullpen.
That was all it took.
We'll get into that next.
Coming up on Locked on Cardinals.
The NHL playoffs are here where every.
shift matters. Every moment is intense and the pressure is at its highest. Now, the blues have not
been playing for quite some time now. They did not make the playoffs. Unfortunately, they put a nice
run together at the end of the season, but fell short. So that's been, that was kind of a bummer.
But we did see the Vegas Golden Knights just sweep the Colorado Avalanche. Who saw that coming?
Avalanche for the president's trophy winners. Best record in the NHL, they got swept. So that was
crazy. And just like performance matters on the ice, it matters off the ice too. And that's where

Michael McGreevy is the opposite of what makes most pitchers in this day and age really good.
You know, the drill, he doesn't throw hard enough, not a lot of swing and miss, not a lot of chase.
and that makes life a little more difficult for him when he doesn't have pinpoint control.
And when he's on, it's a beautiful thing to watch.
You know, I would much rather watch Michael McGreevy work his way through seven
innings than watch, you know, somebody like Ms.
Just throw 103 past people.
I don't find that all that entertaining.
I'm just like, wow, that's really fast.
And then they just do the same thing over and over where McGreevy having to pitch
and move the ball around and change speeds,
I find that more entertaining.
It's a lot more difficult to do that, though.
And to be successful,
he doesn't have the luxury of missing his spots very often.
Or when he does, he risk getting hit harder than guys who can throw it by people,
which is something he doesn't do.
The whiff percentage is in the lower 13% of the league.
You could still be a good pitcher.
This is not saying Michael McGreevy can't have success and be a good pitcher.
He can, but the room for error,
the margin for error.
It's just smaller.
It's tough.
And facing a team like the Brewers is not a great matchup for him because they don't
normally chase anyway.
They don't normally strike out a whole bunch.
And they seemingly are always making contact, putting the ball in play, and they wear
you down and eventually they get you.
Early on in this game, McGreevy was getting strikeouts.
In fact, he had five in the first three innings, which came in handy because he allowed
the leadoff guy to get on via hits in the first two innings, but it was.
able to keep the Brewers offense at bay, was able to get out without any damage.
Fourth inning, he got tagged for that lead off home run by Jake Bowers,
cutter up in the zone, one-nothing Brewers.
All right, you're not going to freak out about that.
So the home runs you can normally live with.
No need to panic.
Strikes out his sixth batterer of the game right after that dinger gets a ground out,
and it looks like he's right back on track.
Fifth inning rolls around, and that's when the Brewers do what they do best.
And that's get on base.
Yelich doubles to start the ending.
Four of five lead-off hitters got on against McGreevy,
which is a dangerous rope to walk.
You know, it's your chances of getting out of it over and over, over,
are not good.
And finally, the brewers are able to break through.
So they get this lead-off double.
Then he walks, churio, makes it first and second,
which, yeah, you can set up the devil play there,
so it's not a big deal.
You get one ground ball, and just like that,
you're going to have two down.
but he walks Bryce Terang.
And now you're really in deep-ish because the bases are loaded.
There's nobody out.
You got William Contreras coming up, arguably the best hitter on the team,
hottest hitter on the team right now.
And I tweeted out right after the log.
As soon as Terang took ball for, I was like,
almost guaranteed that the Brewer is going to score two here,
barring a Christmas miracle.
And as you know, it is not Christmas time.
And the miracle didn't happen.
Contreras rips the first 50 Cs in the left center gap, makes it three nothing.
And that was it.
That was it for McGreevy, who was still responsible for the two guys still on.
And still, there is nobody out.
Now, if you had gotten a ground ball, turn two, get out of that.
And that would have been something.
But you just know it.
With the Brewers, as soon as they get those dudes on base, odds are they're getting them in.
And you could just see it coming.
So two walks becomes the undoing for Michael McGreevy.
Fernandez comes in next after getting added back to the team officially on Tuesday,
which was something we all knew was going to happen.
Mott's was going down.
Fernandez was coming to the bullpen.
He strikes out Bowers, which was great because you're like, okay, maybe he's going to get out of this.
And maybe three nothing is going to be something we can, we can work with at least.
Nope, serves up a hanging slider to Garrett Mitchell, who tattoos this sucker over the center field board.
It was a bomb, 421 feet, three run shot.
all of a sudden it's six nothing.
And that closed the book on McGreevy,
who goes from giving up one run and four innings,
starting the fifth inning.
And it seemed like he was having another one of those
McGreevy outings and things were going to be all right
to giving up five runs and four innings instead,
because he never got it out in the inning.
And then Fernandez didn't help him out,
gives up that three-run bomb, two-run score.
So his final line looks terrible.
Five runs, four innings, seven hits,
three, one.
The six strikeouts you like, but the three walks are something that don't normally happen with him.
You know, the hits are what they are, but those walks specifically, the two and the fifth were really his undoing.
Brewers just don't let stuff like that slide.
They just don't.
You walk a couple guys, somebody's coming around and scoring.
That's what they do.
The home runs aren't a normal thing for them, but guys on base bringing them around to score.
That is Brewer's baseball at its finest.
and they brewered the hell out of the Cardinals in that inning and put up a five spot,
make it six to nothing, which is how it ended.
Now, the rest of the game had very little going for it until the eighth inning.
And that is when Abner Urebe took the hill for the Brewers,
one of the more demonstrative and spirited players in the game decided in a six to nothing ballgame
to tap into his inner Degeneration X,
WWE wrestling fandom
and following a strikeout to end the inning against Alec Berluson
turned to the Cardinals bench to their dugout
and proceeded to crotch chop three times
before walking off the field,
which had everybody going,
what is he doing?
As you would expect,
this did not sit well with the finals. It also did not sit well with Yerebe's own manager, Pat
Murphy. He didn't like it either. But the weird thing is Jurebe's explanation as to why he did this.
It's the most perplexing part of it all. He blamed somebody for doing this. And it wasn't
anybody who was actually on the field. We'll discuss what he had to say about it,
it up next on Locked on Cardinals. Once again, thank you for making Lockdown,
Carlos first listen of the day. Thank you for making Lockdown, the Never One Sports
Podcast Network. So the situation with Abner Uribe begins with the at-bat by Ivan Herrera.
Comes up in the eighth inning. Count goes to 2-0. Again, it's a six to nothing ball game.
And Yerebe throws a sinker that a little high and tight. What had?
hunting, nothing crazy.
It wasn't like, you know, you didn't see it and go, whoa, what's he doing?
It wasn't like that, but it was a little high and tight for Herrera's liking.
He didn't appreciate it.
I mean, this guy throws 98-99.
Like, it's not like he's throwing up knuckle balls there, you know?
So anything up and in is not going to sit well with any batter in the first place.
And Yvonne admitted he said after up and in, after the third pitch or second pitch went up
and then, I think it was a third pitch, actually, third pitch.
So it made it three and no. After it went up in him, Yvonne admitted that he said,
keep it down. And according to Herrera, in a quote from Jeff Jones, he said, I said,
keep it down. And he started laughing, talking about Yerebe. Now Yvon would take a walk,
ended up on second base after Jordan Walker's infield single. And when Yerebe strikes out
Burley and does the crotch chopping. Herrera continued saying about his feelings towards this,
saying, you know, if you have an issue with me, you come tell me. You had the chance to do that
to me. I was at second and you didn't. So, you know, just don't disrespect our team, which is the
main thing here, even though Major League Baseball might find what he did a little sexually explicit,
it, you know, I mean, it is a crotch chop.
That's not really what bothered me that he did one in the first place,
but the way he like turned and did it right at the Cardinals dugout,
it seemed like he had a purpose behind it.
Like why all of a sudden in a six to nothing ball game,
it's not it's that two to one where, oh gosh, you know,
your emotions get the best of you.
I mean, it is six to nothing.
This is not really even a game.
So that's,
where we thought this all stemmed from was just from Yvonne Herrera telling him, hey, keep it down.
And he didn't like that so much. Don't tell me what to do. But that's not really what it was about.
Because after the game, Yorribe spoke to the media in the Brewers Clubhouse and apologized
through an interpreter to his teammates, to his coaches, to the executives, to the fans,
but did not apologize to the Cardinals.
In fact, he said,
I don't think it's professional for their manager
to be making signs toward our dugout
saying he's going to be hitting guys.
What?
What?
So now he has accused
St. Louis Cardinals manager, Ali Marmel,
of signaling that he was going to be hitting guys.
and he mentioned specifically Yelich and Contreras when the media were like, wait, hold on.
So this, what was going on?
And he mentions that Yelie and William.
So Yelich and Contreras, that that's who he was making these gestures towards.
And that's what prompted his reaction after the strikeout to turn to the dugout and do the crotch chop.
Now, first off, whether you like Ali or not, does that sound?
like something Ali Marmal does. Yeah, let's start doing signals to say, pitch these guys in and hit
him. Does that sound like something Ollie would ever do? Have you ever seen the camera pan
over to him where he's doing any signs at all? No, he just sit there. He's managing the game.
He's not doing anything. So now you got that on top of this. And Jeff Jones said the team strongly
denied that that occurred.
So what is Uribe just making things up now?
And his own manager sure didn't act like there was any issues with Olli or the Cardinals.
In fact, he condemned Uribe's action saying it's just unacceptable.
I don't know what got over him.
He's been an emotional or what came over him.
He's been an emotional guy, but that kind of thing, that's just not how we do things.
And I was embarrassed by it.
this is his own manager saying this.
He did say there must be something deeper that I don't know about.
But he followed that up by saying it's not going to be tolerated.
And when they asked Ali about it after the post game,
he's like, no, it looked like his,
he didn't seem worked up about it at all.
He was like, he was like, look, you know,
it looked like his manager handled it.
And they took care of things over there.
So didn't really have a whole lot to say about it.
But don't you think,
that Pat Murphy, the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers,
would know if Ali or any opposing manager
was signaling to hit guys.
Don't you think that would have been something
that got brought up already?
Or he would have some sort of reaction
to something like that and like,
well, there were some things we weren't really agreeing with
that I guess your Rebe decided to do that for it.
No, he was like completely baffled by it.
He's like, I don't know where that came from.
And guess how many batters have been hitting this series so far in the first two games?
Zero.
So what the hell is Abner Uribe talking about?
It adds a layer of spiciness to the game on Wednesday, at least something,
because it hasn't been placed to get excited about on the Cardinals side of the day.
Brewers are having time of their life, all right?
You know, their pitchers are throwing crazy awesome gems while the Cardinals are just flailing
and they just cannot seem to catch a break.
Even when they put the bat on ball in good spots in this game against Harrison,
it would go right to a Brewer's fielder or they would make some awesome play on it.
There was multiple times that happened.
But what a weird situation.
Like, it feels to me like he, I don't know, he's making excuses.
All you got to do is admit, hey, man, I got a little overzealous.
I got a little excited.
My bad.
I'm a young dude.
It's not the first time we've ever seen your eBay make gestures towards other
teams dugouts.
There's plenty of proof of it online.
You can go look it up.
I retweeted a few of those that Lynnworthy from STLt Today.com had tweeted out of him
having similar situations of making gestures towards other dugouts.
That's who he is.
But just be a man and realize that in this era of bat flipping and home run props
and crazy handshakes and post-game celebrations.
where people are humping each other like the Giants do,
that there is still a level of respect towards your opponent that needs to be shown.
And turning and crotch chopping to that daga, that's not it.
That's not it.
Now, the best way to make a guy like him pay for this is to beat him on the field,
him and his teammates beat the brewers on the field in Wednesday's game.
it's too bad, you know, because there's part of me that, you know, the old school part of me that is like, you know, it's too bad.
Pitchers don't hit anymore because it'd be nice to see what Yerebe would feel like if he was up there in the box and 98, 99 came up and in on him.
Probably wouldn't like it so much.
But that's not going to happen.
Dustin May is going to get the start.
It's going to be a bullpen game for the Brewers on Wednesday.
So maybe we'll see Yerebe again in this series.
It's a possibility.
But he's a pitcher.
They don't hit.
you're not going to be able to do anything to him.
And hitting one of their players,
and I know I've seen plenty of people on there,
like, got to drill somebody tomorrow for all this.
I just don't see how retaliating and hitting somebody else for this
is going to help anything.
Like, I don't know how that sends a message.
Seems pretty stupid to me.
You know, his manager is already, you know,
yelled at him about it, clearly doesn't agree with it.
I'm sure his teammates don't like it either.
Like, what are you doing, man?
like being adult.
Like I said,
Ali was calm about the whole thing initially afterwards,
but I don't think he's going to take too kindly to being accused
of whatever the heck Garibay was talking about.
Nobody wants to be pointed at and accused of anything if they didn't do it.
And I don't think Ali's going to like that too much at all.
But we'll see what happens.
We'll see what happens.
Got an update on Lars Newport's chances of coming back to the team this weekend.
One for three on Tuesday night in Springfield RBI double.
seem to be running well, but Jeff Jones tweeted earlier the day that it does not sound like
there's much of a chance that Lars Nupar gets activated for the weekend with the Cubs in town.
Cardinals still need to see him play full games, full games back to back, a variety of tolerance
things, which might stretch to close to 20 days on rehab.
So if you're hoping that that was something that might happen and sparked this team offensively
this weekend, it appears that Jeff Jones has poured a little bit of ice, cold water on that idea.
looks like Brian Torres going to get to stick around for a little bit longer,
which we're cool with.
Two more hits on Tuesday.
He's now bat in 333 since getting called up.
One of the few guys below Jordan Walker that's hitting anything.
So that's cool.
Also a huge game in the minor leagues for one of their top prospects, Joshua Baez,
and Memphis, four for six, two bombs, two singles, five ribbies.
It's now hitting 247 with 13 home runs and 34 RBIs, 11 stolen bases in his first 45
games at AAA. Again, first 45 games at AAA. It's not like he was there last year and he's
just rolling right back into it. No, he climbed another level. And in 45 games, that's the production
you're getting. So got to be stoked about that. Hunter Dobbins also threw well in that game,
four and a third inning. He allowed one run. Had seven Ks, Memphis one 19 to five. So no need to
keep them in there any longer than that. So that's some good news, some good news from the minor
Leaks. Carl's going to try to avoid the sweep on Wednesday first pitch scheduled for 1240,
St. Louis time. Really need to grab a win here because you need some momentum before you get
another day off on Thursday and then you got the Cubs coming to town who now have lost 10 in a row
like they are spiraling and you got to be there to step on their throat. You have to.
They lost again in Pittsburgh. So things are not good in Chicago. And this is when you want to face them.
So you want a little bit of momentum going into that series where you're not questioning yourself
and how your offense is going to show up or how you're pitching is like you want to feel good
about yourself going into a series against the team that isn't doing dittily squat against anybody
right now.
So hopefully they can do that.
Hopefully we get a good outing from Dustin May and get a little more offense in this bullpen game.
Although Cardinals usually struggle against bullpen game.
So I don't know.
I don't know what to agree.
back things. We could see some fireworks with your rebang. Who knows? Who knows? That's why we watch, right?
