The St. Louis Cardinals have a bona fide star in the making with J.J. Weatherholt and he's starting to get the recognition that he deserves. This is Locked on Cardinals.
You are locked on Cardinals. Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Hey there, Cardinals fans. I'm J.D. Haffert and on today's show, we'll get into the news and notes about the team, including the horrific plane crash that was apparently on the way to pick up Cardinals.
Hall of Famer, Yadier Molina.
We're going to talk some trade chatter.
But let's start with a discussion about Cardinals starting second basement, J.J. Weatherholt.
You know, by now you know the backstory with JJ, first round pick out of West Virginia.
Maybe he could have gone number one overall.
There was an argument there that maybe he should have been number one overall,
but had that leg injury, that final year in college.
So that kind of pushed things, pushed him down a little bit, slides to the Cardinals at number seven,
who scoop them up.
thank you very much. And he's been up one of the top prospects in the game ever since.
And now that he's up in the big leagues, which makes me think of the Jeffersons,
now we up in the big leagues. This season, people are starting to slowly but surely come around
and realizing how special this dude really is. And the latest rookie of the year talk is beginning
to center around J.J. Weatherhole. Now, MLB.com did another rookie of the year poll. It's a panel of
32 MLB.com experts. They cast their votes based on not only the results so far,
but also on how things are expected to play out for the rest of the season.
Voters rank their top five picks in each league on a 5,4, 3, 2,1 scale,
five points for first place, four points for second place and so forth.
And in the National League, would you look at that?
Coming in at number one, it is our very own J.J. Weatherholt.
And here is the breakdown on what they have to say about JJ, who's
scored 120 total votes, 13 first place votes.
Since homering on opening day and his MLB debut,
the Cardl's top prospect entering the season made known that he'd be in this discussion
all season.
His 358 on base percentage is the highest among qualified in our rookies,
while his 753 OPS ranks third.
After a slowdown for most of May, whether Holt has hit 333 with an 807 OPS over his
past seven games entering Tuesday.
Meanwhile, his nine home runs are second most among in our Rookies.
other rankings for him among the qualified rookies out there,
eighth of batting average,
first and runs scored.
This is all in the National League, by the way.
First and run scored, fourth and hits, fifth and ribbies,
despite batting leadoff.
Second of walks.
He's tied for fourth and stolen basis.
Still has not been caught yet this year.
He's seven successful.
No caught stealing yet.
First in OBP, sixth in slugging,
third in OPS.
And another side to this is that he's playing on a winning ball club,
a winning ball club that most people expected to stink in 2026.
Nobody had faith in the Cardinals outside of St. Louis and outside the organization.
Everybody thought they were going to be terrible.
And he's been the catalyst at the top of the order that gets this thing going each and every night.
He's second on the team in home runs behind Jordan Walker, second behind Jordan as well in run scored.
He's fourth and hits.
He's fifth in ribbyes.
He's second and walks.
Third and stolen bases.
he's fourth in average, he's fourth in slug, OBP and OPS.
And the three guys who are ahead of him in those four categories are Jordan Walker,
who's having an MVP type of season in the first half.
Alec Berlinson, who's coming out the Silver Slugger winner, pretty good.
And Ivan Herrera, who hit second behind him in the order.
And coming into the season, there was an argument that Ivan Herrera was going to be the best
hitter on the club.
I mean, it's unbelievable what he's been doing so far.
And he and Michael McGreevy were visiting the MLB Network Studios ahead of the series in New York that begins tonight against the Mets.
And they talked about JJ's mechanics, how he ranks among the top rookies in Cardinals history in war.
They put a little list up there where they had Rogers Hornsby from 1916.
Mason went in 2024, Stan Musial in 1944.
San Musial in 1942,
Luke Klein, who was a one-year wonder in
1943, and then Albert Poole's in 2001.
Those are your top five war rankings for Cardinals' rookies of all time.
So that was from fifth to first with Albert at the top at 6.6.4.
And JJ is currently on pace to beat all of that.
He's on pace for a 6.9 war this season.
Nice.
Whether he does it or not, we don't know yet.
There's still a long way to go.
but that is one hell of a list to be a part of.
They talked about leg kicks.
They went into his discussion about why he cut back on the leg kick the way it was in West Virginia.
They talked about his hand positioning.
They keyed in on his plate discipline, which we all know,
has been a crucial part to his success as the lead off hitter for this team,
the ability to not chase, to not swing and miss,
Chase percentage at 22.5 league average at 30.1, with percentage 22.5, league average at 25.2.
They talked about his hard hit percentage, which is at 48.4 league average is at 39.4.
And as impressive as all of that is, we knew this dude could hit.
I don't think any of us were worried that J.J. Weatherhull would be able to perform offensively at the big league level.
The real question was, how was he going to transition from playing shortstop to,
becoming a second basement and do it in the big leagues.
You know, we've seen other guys who have to switch positions when they get to the show
and they struggled to make these new adjustments.
You know, you had Jordan Walker, how bad did he look in the outfield the first couple
of seasons has looked really good there this year.
Nolan Gorman, another one who moved from third to second base, wasn't the easiest thing
in the world, wasn't the best looking idea after seeing him out there.
He looks much more comfortable at third base.
but JJ going from short to second base,
it's almost been a seamless transition.
And along with Mason win,
they have now formed one of the best defensive duos up the middle,
shortstop second base combos that the league has to offer.
You've got Mason winning when coming off a gold glove award winning season,
not quite at that level so far this year.
But still, you know he's awesome.
Let's be honest.
And now you go look at what second base has got with JJ Weatherhole.
According to outs above average weatherhole,
to plus 11, which is tied for the second best defender in baseball.
Not rookies, not rookies, but in baseball, not even at second base, just in baseball in general.
He's tied with PCA, who is the God's gift to outfield, right?
He's tied with PCA at plus 11.
And he's only trailing the plus 16 mark from Royal Shortstab, Bobby Whit Jr.,
who might be the best defensive player in,
baseball. Two gold gloves, a platinum glove already under his belt. Once again,
it's a pretty good company to be hanging around with. And it's a similar story when you go to
his DRF's defensive run save. He's a plus eight right now, which puts him in the top 10 in the
major leagues. Again, not at second base, not in the national league, not as a rookie, just in the
major leagues for the seven of the guys ahead of them are outfielders. We go to infielders. We're
talking about Cole Young in Seattle, defensive guy. Matt Chapman in San Francisco,
who's been one of the best defensive third baseman of all time, five gold gloves,
two platinum gloves, and then Taylor Walls in Tampa Bay. Again, another just defensive guy
where JJ gives you the whole package. The only wish is that the growing issue that he has
suffered recently that he's been dealing with, which was back in the lineup at the end of the week
there. Hopefully that subsided and he can continue to make his push as the NL rookie of the year.
And more importantly, keep his team winning. That's the, that's the real thing here is we just
want to keep winning. So up next, we'll get into some trade chatter after one national reporter
brought up the Cardinals trade deadline strategy, which involved moving two names instead of
acquiring people, which might bum some people out. But we'll get into all that coming up next
on lockdown cardinals. If you've got a sweet tooth like I do, you know how tough it can be to go find
perfect treat, something that is sweet enough to, you know, take care of those cravings.
But at the same time, you don't want the sugar.
And that's why cotton candy, five-hour energy shot is one of my go-to flavors when it comes to
five-hour energy.
I take one of these suckers probably three times a week because I love them.
It gives you that classic cotton candy taste that you remember as a kid, which is still delicious.
But you get that tasty caffeine boost.
There's no sugar.
It's quick.
It's easy.
It's portable.
It's perfect.
It takes care of the sweet craving and gives me that extra energy boost I need to take on whatever it is that's going on in my day, whether it's going to the gym, whether it's going to job number two, job number three, going on the air as a radio personality.
Or I just got to stay up late to watch the Cardinals in case they're like on the West Coast or something.
It's become a go-to when I want something sweet, but I don't want to go overboard.
All right.
So bring on the sweetness with cotton candy, five-hour energy shots available now at five-hour energy.com.
or on Amazon. Once again, cotton candy, five-hour energy shots available now at five-hour energy.com or
on Amazon. Today's episode also brought to you by game time. Now, there's nothing like watching
a Cardinals game live and in person. You get the excitement of just being at the ballpark in
general, Bush Stadium, obviously a beautiful place to watch a game. I had friends from Cincinnati
who were in town this past weekend for the series just raving about our stadium, which maybe we
take for granted a little bit at times. But you've got.
got that. You've got the fans. You've got the tarps off thing, which is such a big deal now.
The only problem is getting tickets can feel like a grind, long queue, surprise fees,
prices jumping at checkout. And that's why there's game time. It's the app that gives fans the
advantage with constant innovation. And you can unlock amazing tickets and experiences.
And you're doing just a few taps. So simple to use. And the game time, game time guarantee means
it's going to get 100% authentic tickets each and every time they get delivered on time,
which is very important. But you also get it at the best.

you got to lose, right?
Say what you want about Bob Nightingale.
His tweets, I know we all get a good laugh out of some of the silly stuff that he tweets out
there because not all of it makes a lot of sense.
But he is a good source for baseball news with USA Today.
So you got to admit that.
And he recently dropped an article about trade deadline possibilities.
Now, the main meat of this story had to do with Terrick Scoobel of the Detroit Tigers,
what his future is.
which team should go after him and make that push,
even though he's going to become a free agent at the end of the year.
Spoiler alert, the Cardinals were not involved in that discussion whatsoever.
But he talked about Met starter Freddie Peralta,
who the Cardinals are going to see tonight.
Boston's enrolled as Chapman,
Catel Marte of the Diamondbacks,
some big names involved there.
And he eventually dropped a couple of nuggets about the Cardinals.
The first one he talked about was actually about manager Ali Marmal,
getting the acceptance or accepting, I should say,
Dave Roberts's invitation to be on the NL coaching staff at the All-Star game.
And he points it out, says St. Louis Carls manager,
Ali Marmal, a candidate for the NL manager of the year award.
And talked about how Ali and Philly's manager,
John Mattingly, will be the non-Dodger coaches with Roberts.
And it got me thinking like, how will fans who have wanted him gone for so many years,
have pointed to him as you're the problem, you're why the Cardinals never win,
man, you stink. Get out of here. Get me Mike Schilt on the phone. Where is that audience now?
Where are those fans? They were so up in arms about Ali being just the wrong fit and it's never
going to work under him. How are they going to feel if Ali takes home the award for NL manager of
the year, just like their buddy Mike Schulte. I wonder. I wonder how it's all going to work out.
Still got a long way to go. But it's cool. You got to admit, Ali's done a pretty darn good job with
this very, very, very young team and inexperienced team and has been able to do some good stuff
with them. So is he perfect? Of course not. No manager is. But you got to give him a pat on the back,
right? Then Nightingale brings up that the White Sox and the Cardinals have been two of the biggest
surprises in baseball in the first half. But he says, please, they're not about to trade prospects at
the deadline to go all in. Talking about both of them. But this is a Cardinals podcast. So we don't
care what the White Sox deal. We carry, we carry about the Cardinals are up to. And the Cardinals,
he says, are in fact expected to trade, reliever Joe Joe Romero and started Dustin May at the trade
deadline, providing they slip further back in the wild card race. Now, that's very important.
Because it doesn't say, hey, they're automatically gone no matter what. You know, if they are still
in contention, obviously, you'll have to rethink some things. But I've certainly seen some pushback
to the idea by some fans who don't want to trade these guys.
You know, they're interested in winning.
They want to win this year.
And I don't blame you whatsoever, you know, but they're willing to keep these guys and try to win this year.
They don't care what next year looks like.
Let's win this year.
Let's go get some pieces and make a push.
And I understand that mentality.
I appreciate it.
But also realize that the markets for both Jojo and Dustin May,
might be fruitful once the deadline time rolls around.
You know, teams who are already committed to 2026 who are like,
this is going to be one of our, you know, contention window years,
they're always going to get desperate near the trade deadline
and we'll be willing to part with some top tier assets more times than not
because supply demand of what you got at the deadline.
You know, the clock is ticking when you get there.
You can't make any more deals.
You know, the off season, you can kind of take your time.
You can mull over trades.
You got less pressure on you to get something done.
But at the deadline, you know that there is like 10 to 14 other teams that are in contention that might be calling that same organization about those people.
You might have to outbid them to get your hands on them to go further in the postseason.
So teams are usually ready to swap some pretty good pieces to improve their standing.
And all you need, all you need is one desperate.
for GM to get a little wild and break and you can cash in pretty big.
And now you've got Heinbblum in charge for the first time.
Like we know how Mo did things over his,
his tenure and how some of the trades that he did make,
you know, specifically like the Jack Flaherty one,
didn't get all that much out of it in the end, right?
You know, Seizar Prieto still with the organization,
but the others who guys are not, as far as I remember,
I think Showalter's gone too now.
So, but, you know, it happens, you know, you got to take a chance and you go for some prospects.
And sometimes it works. Sometimes it does it. But now you got Heinblum who has, it seems, more resources available as far as scouting wise.
They seem to be more in tune with what the leagues got and what the don't got. And perhaps it'll help out this time around.
Now, Jojo, as much as we've enjoyed Jojo Romero, like, and I'm not saying we don't.
I like Jojo.
You like Jojo, okay?
But probably not part of the future of this team.
He's about to turn 30.
He's a free agent at season's end.
Somebody will probably give him more money than the Cardinals are willing to part with to sign him next year.
So Bolpin help, lefty, you know, specifically, you know, in the postseason.
Some people might be willing to pay a pretty penny for him.
Dustin May, as you know.
Oh, extensive injury history.
When he was on the field, solid pitcher in his career.
So far this year, he's been an excellent addition to this rotation.
Since those two rough starts at the beginning of the year where everybody was like,
uh-oh, maybe he sucks.
He's been very non-sucky.
He has held down a 3.19 ERA in his last 10 starts.
He's got 53Ks and 59 in the third innings.
He toyed with the no-hitter against the Brewers.
and most importantly, he's been healthy.
And he and the Cardinals do hold a mutual option after the season.
So, yeah, they can come back to each other if they want to,
but that doesn't happen very often.
And if May keeps up his strong year,
he's going to want to cash in on a multi-year deal
and solidify his future, whether that's two years, three,
maybe even four years.
He's going to go after guaranteed money.
You can't blame him for that.
So that's what you're going up against.
So even if you keep him because you like him and he likes being in St. Louis doesn't mean he's going to stay here after the season.
And odds are somebody else will be willing to overpay for him.
And Cardinals are not in that business right now to overpay for veterans.
So why not dangle them as bait?
Why wouldn't you?
It makes sense.
I would also throw Riley O'Brien in there.
I'd throw Ryan Stanix name in there as well.
Would you trade any of them?
the other players like Ramona Rias. And when he gets healthy, that's a guy. Would you dangle Nolan
Gorman? You know, are you starting to feel like maybe he's not a part of this future? And somebody
else wants to get their hands on a left hand of power hitting bat that's, you know,
in the middle of his, it's what's supposed to be his prime right now. Is that somebody you would
dangle? Maybe, maybe. You know, O'Brien is 31 years old. And although he's like pre-arbitration is
coming up. So it's not like he's costing a lot of money right now, but he's 31 years old.
And you've already started to see the cracks in his game this season. So I can see why you put
him out there. Like, hey, who's interested? Stanick, a free agent after season two. Acquiring
more young talent to develop and add to the depth of this organization, that's a good thing.
So I'm on board with it. You know, just like I came to terms with trading away Nolan Arnato and
Brendan Donovan and Contreras and Gray. At first, as a Cardinals fan, you're like, I don't know.
if I want to do that. I don't want to suck. Turned out to be one of the best things they could have
done. They've shed all that payroll and they're still winning without all those guys. But if the
team is in contention for a playoff spot, then the asking price for those guys will probably go up
in the cardinal size because they're still in contention. So they don't want to get rid of these
guys. So somebody would have to come in with something good enough where the car is like,
you know what, that's too good to pass up. And we're willing to do that. But we've got
out seven weeks to see where the team is, is at. But the goal and the vision is the same as it
was this offseason. This is a rebuild. It's going very well so far. Yay. But the focus is on the
future, not 2026. If they move these guys, hopefully they do it in a way that there are people
in the organization who are ready to step up. Or they can get some additions to fill those
rolls left behind. But one thing is for certain, at least in my eyes, they are not trading away
prospects to add any high-priced veteran talent to this team for 2026. That would go against everything
they've already done. So that doesn't make any sense. So that's my thoughts on the trade stuff.
News and notes are next. Scary plain situation surrounding Yotty or Molina. That was frightening
looking. We'll talk about it coming up next on Lockdown Cardness.
Hey, it's Mike and John from Lockdown Angels. We wanted to talk to you about something that's important.
family. I've been married a few years now and my wife and I have a one year old and we're always thinking about his future.
Who's he going to become? How can we help? In what ways can we make sure his future is secure?
Yeah, I'm in a different season. I'm married. I have three young adult kids. And lately I've been thinking a lot about how to make sure my family's taken care of in the long term.

It was a scary scene the other day when a private plane in route to pick up Yaddi
or Molina, his family and some friends crashed on the runway soon after taking off.
If you want to Google it, you can see the images.
I'm not going to show them on here.
But this happened in the Dominican Republic.
The pilot, co-pilot, they were killed.
They were the only two people on board.
They show the plane impacting the ground mold.
Like kind of skipping across and it just,
it's frightening.
And it bursts into flames and just a horrible scene.
Now Molina was in Texas waiting for this plane and he actually posted his condolences on Instagram about it,
saying my condolences to the pilots, their families.
This plane was on its way to pick me, pick up me, my family and friends in Texas to return to Puerto Rico.
This is also heartbreaking.
According to Derek, according to Derek,
gold.STELt Today.com, his family and we're familiar with both the pilots and had flown with them
many, many times before the accident. So just a tragic and an awful scene overall, scary stuff.
Like it's just, it's hard to believe that, you know, that those things still continue to happen.
It's just, it's frightening. It's very frightening to see a plane crash just in general.
So sad stuff there. In better news, though, more uplifting news.
Peoria achieved second basement, Trey Richardson. The third was named.
midwest league player of the week. His power surge this week led to a slash line of 412,500,
and 1.294 with a league leading five dingers, 22 total bases, 1.794 OPS over five games last
week, including two multi-homer games and a career high tying five RBIs on June the 5th.
On the year, Richardson, eh, he's only hitting 337 with 10 home runs. Get this, 337, 10 home
runs, 26 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 26 games.
played. Are you kidding me? That's insane. But before you get really excited about this,
he is only 5'9 and listed 165 pounds. So power is not really probably his future. I don't
know what's going on here that's caused him to do this. I know he's hitting the ball in the air
a whole lot more, but he's already 24 years old as well. So pump the brakes. Don't get too
excited about it. But man, you do stuff like that. You deserve some love. So a whole lot of
love going out to Trey Richardson, the third. It is the second straight league player of the
award winner for the Peoria Chiefs. Outfielder Juan Ben Cho won it last week when he slashed 412,
524, 882 with four doubles, two triples, two stolen bases, seven ribbies league high,
1.406 OPS across five games, including three extra base hits and five RBIs on the May 28th game.
So keep it up, boys. Keep swinging the lumber. Checking in on the NL Central. Monday was a light
night in major league baseball, but holy crap, did they have a doozy of a game in Las Vegas where
the A's were hosting the Brewers with Milwaukee, because of course, coming out on top by a score of
15 to 14 and 12 eddings. That's like the independent baseball league games I see sometimes,
man, it is rough. But these are the major leaguers, man. Kyle Harrison, who's been like heaven sent
for the Brewers, they stole him basically from the Boston Red Sox. He got shelled for the first time this
year eight runs, three dingers in just two and a third innings. But the Brewers fought their way back as
they normally do. They scored 10 runs over the final five frames to win it. 29 combined runs
scored in Monday's game, smashed the previous MLB wide season high of 25. The two gloves combined
for 11 home runs. The A's hit seven of them. The only other team to hit seven in a game was the
Giants who just did it to the Cubs at Wrigley Field just a few days ago. Brewers had to use seven
pitchers in this game. So I am curious how that affects them moving.
forward the two teams will play again tonight. And if you have another, you know, home run fest,
I wonder what kind of damage this will do to, you know, a team's plans as far as how they run
their bullpen and stuff moving forward. So it's not easy. You hate to see those games. When it's your
team, you hate to see it, because you're like, oh my gosh, like, how are we going to recoup from
all this? But to see the brewers have to go through, they still got the wind, though, man. But to see
them going through it doesn't hurt quite as much. They still trade mill.
Trail Milwaukee. The Cardinals do by five and a half in the division.
They're two and a half up on Pittsburgh who have lost three in a row.
They're hosting the Dodgers, so life not getting any easier for them.
They also lost Brandon Lau, who was their top hitter so far this year.
He's going to be out for a bit.
Cubs are fourth in the division.
They're actually in Colorado.
So you'll probably see some crooked numbers there.
Red's lost in San Diego.
They've dropped five in a row now.
They're now three games under 500 and continue to sink in the division.
Cardinals still hold the top.
wild card spot in the National League. They're a half game over Philadelphia who was surging and two
games over Arizona who's been a pretty solid team for most of the year. Tonight's game,
Freddie Peralta, as I mentioned, against Dustin May at City Field in New York. Looks like it's
going to be a beautiful night in Flushing. So excited to watch some baseball tonight. First
pitch will be at 610 St. Louis time. Thank you again for making a lot on Carlis. First
