The St. Louis Cardinals just showed you how they can be a competitive team in 2026 and their series win over the Cleveland Guardians.
This is Locked on Cardinals.
You are Locked on Cardinals.
Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Hey there, Cardinals fans. I'm J.D. Haffron. And yes, I am a Cardinals fan in an ugly shirt.
Yes. It's bad.
on today's show.
We're going to talk about one of the Cardinals' top prospects
who had a monster day on Wednesday.
But we've got not one, but two games that we want to talk about
involving the Cardinals and the Guardians,
both of them ending with Freebird,
playing loudly over the speakers at Bush Stadium
and the Cardinals celebrating.
So let's start with Wednesday's game,
since it was the newest and most freshest in our minds.
But man, oh man,
so many good things to talk about in this particular game
for the Cardinals, where to begin?
I mean, I think the most impressive thing,
at least for me about this win on Wednesday,
was just all of the little things
that the Cardinals were able to do to earn this victory.
You know, it is,
look, we know the Cardinals are young.
We know they've got plenty of holes on this roster,
and life this season is going to have plenty of ups and downs,
but, you know, that's what you sign up for
when you go all in on rebooting your organization,
the roster. And for this team to win, heck, just to be competitive for this season, they got to
find different ways to take advantage of their opponents. They got to be smarter than the people
they play. Find the pressure points on those other teams and you squeeze. And the Cardinals were
able to do that on Wednesday, utilizing more of the small ball, lighty ball type of tactics that a
lot of fans love to watch.
You know, chicks may dig the long ball going back to that old commercial with,
who is it, Maddox and Glavin that were in it.
But Cardinals fans appreciate all the little things that a team can do to win a baseball
game.
And although there wasn't much of a crowded Bush Stadium, those who were there and
those of us who were able to watch on TV got to see the Cardinals do a lot of those
little things right to beat a solid Cleveland Guardians team that was in the playoffs last year.
Cardinals show off the defense early when Mason Wynn throws out Stephen Kwan at home plate,
trying to score from third in the first inning.
Yeah, he slipped.
And maybe he would have beat that throw if Mason win.
If he hadn't slipped and, you know, Mason win, though, he's got a cannon.
And he put the ball right where it needed to be.
And they got him.
They got them.
They execute the rundown.
They get their man.
Unfortunately, Ramirez, you know, he moves up to second base.
and Manzardo drives them in with a two-out base hit off of Dustin May to make it one to nothing.
But Cardl's behind early again.
Yeah.
What else is new?
Top of the second, though.
Pedro Pazz, who had a huge hand in this victory, by the way.
We're going to talk about it.
Ends the inning by gunning down Daniel Schneeman trying to steal second base.
Another little thing that they haven't had a ton of success doing, but they get their man here.
You know, slowing down the other team's running game hasn't been the Cardinals' best
attribute. So to see them get somebody nice. Then in the bottom half of the second inning,
Nathan Church, singles, and steals second base, the first of four stolen bases by the team in this
game and three in this inning. And now that church is in scoring position, the single, by the way,
bunt laid it down. And now the church is in scoring position, you get the RBI single by
everyone's favorite catcher, Pedro Pahas. And if you don't get that joke, just go look in the
comment section under any of my episodes or when the Cardinals post their starting lineup and Paez
is in the lineup. Fans are going nuts. But Pedro after this game, maybe he's earned some bonus points,
at least for now. But after the RBI single, Paez steals third base, your catcher who has no
wheels whatsoever, steals third base, steals it off the pitcher. J.J. walks. He steals second base.
Herrera walks again, but burly whiffs, sadly, you know, kind of pop our fun balloon there.
But how cool was that inning?
Bun single, steel second, RBI single, takes the second base bag on the throw home, steals third, I mean, aggressive base running, and it helped get them at least one run.
It probably should have been more, but they at least get one.
and I for one would love to see more of this moving forward.
Like just keep it going, man.
Keep the carousel going.
Keep them running.
There's going to be outs.
You're going to make outs when you're aggressive like that.
It's going to happen so you can't get all bent out of shape.
If somebody does get gunned doing some aggressive base running,
but I love it, dictating the play.
I'm all in on that stuff.
Then in the fourth inning,
the defense turns a frown upside down with Nathan Church.
My guy, I know.
This reads a line drive to him in left field,
sailing over his head all the way to the wall.
ball, but then they nail the fundamentals and make up for it.
Church goes and retrieves the ball, hits his cutoff man, which you got to do,
which so happens to be Mason Wend, who has one of the best arms in all of baseball.
And he delivers a strike to home plate where our guy, Pedro Pahas, is waiting and
not blocking the plate, which, you know, is always a thing.
You always got to worry about that, plays at the plate where the runner might be impeded from being able to
touch home play. It's such a dumb rule. It's just nonsense. It needs to be changed.
You know, I get where you're trying to save any of the collisions from happening, but sometimes
it's a little ridiculous. Like, bro, I've had the ball like two feet ahead of when the runner is
coming to home play. Like, he's got to slide into me. That's just the way it's going to be.
But they get their guy. Bottom line, they get their guy. The score remains tight. It's beautiful stuff.
Beautiful stuff. Like I said, nailing the fundamentals, doing all the little things, hitting the
cutoff man, taking the extra base, laying down the buns, getting the guys at home play,
making accurate throws, doing the smart things.
It was beautiful.
It was beautiful early on.
And at this point, we're still at a one-to-one game because of the Cardinals doing the little
things right.
Up next, we're going to discuss the inning where the Cardinals showed off their awareness
and more elite top-tier base running ability.
We're going to get into that.
Coming up next on Lockdown Cardinals.
The NHL playoffs are here where every shift matters.
You know, every moment is very intense.
We know about the Stanley Cup playoffs.
And in St. Louis, the pressure is at its highest.
Sadly, our Blues did not make the playoffs this year.
But I'm still going to watch the NHL playoffs.
Just be like, I watch the NBA playoffs.
You know, I get excited for this time of year.
And, you know, there's plenty of teams that are very exciting to watch in the NHL still,
like Dallas and Colorado, Buffalo doing their thing this year.
Carolina's fun.
Edmonton, obviously, with.
with McJesus doing his stuff.
Tampa Bay is always a good watch.
And just like performance matters on the ice,
it matters off the ice too.

Top of the sixth inning, boys and girls, here we go.
They start, first off, ending the top of the six by getting the double play on Jose Ramirez
was a really nice boost that I want to bring up real quick because I am thoroughly enjoying
the double play combination that we're getting out of Mason win and JJ Weatherholt.
I can get used to watching that for, I don't know, let's say the next four, five, six, seven years.
I love it.
I love how athletic they both are.
It's fun to watch.
If we can get Mason's offense to do something, like what a, what a duo that's going to be for the future.
But on to the offense.
Mason, win, Nathan Church, speaking of win, doing some offense.
They each single to get the inning going in this one.
And then it's the guy again, that guy, Pedro Pius.
I know.
you're all mad at him still, but he lays down the sack bun.
Almost beats it out.
It took a hell of a play from the pitcher who went to go field the, the bun,
and then he slips, falls on his butt, makes an accurate throw to first guy first picks it perfectly.
Like, it was, it was great.
I mean, credit, tip of the cap to the guardians there.
But got the bunt down, did his job, right?
Next up, you get Victor Scott.
He takes a walk.
Now you got the basis juice for JJ and a lefty, lefty confrontation, which JJ wins by hitting a sack fly to right field that, you know, Chip Kerry, if you're watching the game, thought it was 10 rows deep.
He thought this was a grand slam off the bat.
Nah, it only went 343 feet.
Basically to right field is where it went.
But that was deep enough to score the run from third base to take the lead.
But the best part about it was that on this fly ball to right, everyone tagged up and moved up.
station to station, right?
They move up. Even Victor, who was at first base,
tags up, he goes kind of halfway.
He's watching the throw to make sure that, you know,
if it gets hit, if he hits the cutoff man and he can get back to first,
but he sees that it's inaccurate.
He breaks for it, safe into second base.
And this comes into play right away because now Cleveland's like,
well, crap, we need to load the bases again so we can have the four shot at home.
They got to walk Carrera again.
Loads him up for Alec Berlinson, who sneaks a grounder up the middle
and because of the aggressive base running that you just saw,
it scores instead of one run, it scores two runs.
That makes it four to one.
They would go on to need those extra runs later on when Justin Brule came on in the seven
that gave up two runs with two outs to make it a one run ball game.
But, you know, Jojo comes in.
The hero that Jojo is comes in, saves his bacon to get out of it.
Gorman singles to start that seventh inning,
win gets jammed.
But because he put the ball in play, which we always say, right?
you know, strikeouts that really aren't going to do you any good, man.
Got to put the ball in play.
Puts the ball in play, a little spinnerama type of, so much bit.
It was like a cue ball out there.
Great play by the third baseman to get Mason win at first.
But because it was in play, move the runner up to second base.
And then he comes around to score on Church's double, which made it five to three.
Jojo and Riley O'Brien shut it down on the eighth and the ninth.
They've been incredible.
And the Cardinals take the series.
So just awesome.
baseball to watch. Let's go to the three stars of the game. Nathan Church with three hits and an
RBI and two runs score. Got to give him love there. Alec Berluson was two for five in this game with
two RBIs. So they're going to tie for my number one star. You know, Church, he had the goof in left
field, but everyone knows that a line drive hit right at you is the toughest one to judge. And maybe it was
knuckling a little bit. I don't know, because he just kind of came in. And then he was like,
oh, crap. And it sails over his head.
But he made up for it by hitting his cutoff man.
They gun the guy down at home plate and it doesn't do any damage.
The offense for Nathan Church has been a struggle this year.
Outside of that first game, hasn't had a whole lot to smile about offensively,
but he has a big game here.
And you've seen already how his speed, his defense normally when he doesn't make that mistake,
can be assets.
So really good to see him contributing more.
And hopefully that'll relax some of the natives who are upset.
about church get them out of here too they don't like church they don't like pa has they're they're
upset about those people right now but both of them were huge in this game uh burly obviously burly is just
the man uh not much else to say about burly starting to heat up again was five for 14 in this
series he's now hitting 279 and he's got three multi-hit games in his last four so uh we're
starting to see burly turn things around got off to the hot start then went cold for a little while
and while he was cold, it was Jordan Walker who was high.
You know, this is how the game of baseball goes.
Second star of the game, we're going to give it to Dustin May,
who went six innings, allowed one run on six hits,
one walk, four strikeouts.
The last two outings, complete opposite to how the first two win.
He got pummeled by the rays and the Tigers in his first and second starts,
gave up 13 runs on 17 hits and seven and a third.
It was ugly.
But the last two games, now you're pretty pleased with him, aren't you?
You wanted to get rid of him, too.
the last two, he's down to two and runs on 10 hits and 12 innings.
Keep it going, Big Red, keep it going.
Third star of the game, it's going to Pahas, boys and girls.
Whatever you want to say about him, you want to get angry about him that he's in the lineup and stuff.
I'm fine with that because you want to Bon Herrera catching and you want somebody more,
more offensively gifted than Pedro Paias.
I totally understand that.
I do.
But what a game Pedro had in this one.
And some of this stuff doesn't get low.
look that much, you know, throws out a runner to steal second, gets the RBI single, stole third
base, had a sack punt to help set up the big sixth inning, got the, you know, the rundown
in the first inning when they got Kwan. He was the guy that ran him all the way back to third.
People are over him playing as much as he does. They want to see Pozo get a chance or even Jimmy
Crooks to come up instead, but the Cardinals are not in a hurry with those types of moves.
and Pedro rewarded their loyalty and patience with a huge game on Wednesday.
Is it going to happen like this all the time?
No, probably not.
I understand your frustration with, you know, seeing Pedro in the lineup all the time.
But it paid off of this one.
He did a lot of stuff in this game that helped this team win.
Other notables, JJ Weatherholt reaches base three times on two walks and a hit by pitch.
He just continues to be an on-base machine and, you know, the two home runs that I have for,
obviously, we're huge.
Jordan Walker extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a double in the eighth inning.
My buddy has him on our fantasy team in his league and was like,
Walker sucked today.
And I'm like, dude, shut up.
He expects all the home runs to happen all the time.
You knew it was going to calm down eventually,
but you're still seeing some good bat to ball skills from Jordan Walker.
He smoked that double late in the game.
Yvonne Herrera draws three more walks, one intentionally,
and takes over the major league lead with 18 walks.
You're telling me you thought of Von Herrera would lead the league in walks at this point in the season.
I'd call you a liar to your face.
18 walks and 18 games, though, to start the season, which has done wonders for his OBP,
which is at 368 because his batting average is not good.
It is still below 200, but, you know, the eye is there.
He's just got to be able to hit the ball better.
Like, you know, come in through in situations when he's got a chance.
But he's getting on base.
If they're going to pitch around him, he's not.
not going to chase. So good for you. Good for you, Yvonne Herrera. Riley O'Brien worked a 1-2-3-9th with two
strikeouts for his fifth save, which is the second most in the league right now, not just the national,
but the whole league. He's allowed only one run in 10 games covering 10 in the third
innings, gave up only four hits, no walks, which is huge for you heard him talk about that on the
telecast, you know, how important it is for your relief pitchers to throw strikes. It's what the
undoing of guys like Justin Brule and Matt Sonson and Ryan Stanikov.
they've also gotten hit pretty hard too.
But Riley O'Brien, he's not putting other guys on,
not putting himself in bad situations.
And he's just got such an easy 99 mile an hour sinker.
Like it doesn't even look like he's trying out there.
It's effortless looking.
And he's just killing it on the mound right now.
You know, health has always been the thing with Riley.
They always said he's had the stuff.
Just couldn't stay healthy.
Well, so far, super healthy this year, very healthy last year.
and confident, confident.
You're seeing it how effective he can be
as the shutdown guy in the ninth inning
for the Cardinals right now.
It's kind of funny to think that at one point of this season,
they had Stannick in that role
for whatever reason to start the season.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't have an answer for that one.
But up next, we're going to quickly chat about the walkoff
win on Tuesday, plus a huge day for top prospect,
Rainier Rodriguez, with Peoria.
This is locked on Cardinals.

Quickly, I want to show some appreciation for the team for not quitting on Tuesday night.
Mason wins ground ball should have been to the game, right?
I already had my tweet ready to go about, you know, didn't pull this one out.
But it didn't.
It didn't in the game.
And the Cardinals pounced on that error.
And a couple of wild pitches took advantage of their opponents.
Like I said, find the pressure points, squeeze.
And they did that to Cleveland to come back and shock the Guardians on Tuesday night
and end up winning the series with the victory on Wednesday.
One ground ball away from losing a series and to end up taking two of three instead.
That's impressive.
JJ, going yard twice in that game, as I mentioned.
One to right field.
One to left field.
How about that?
Pozo with the clutch RBI double, church the sack fly to win it.
It follows that up with a three hit day.
So J.C.
With the aggressive run home to win it in extra innings, I loved it.
It was amazing stuff.
It was super fun to watch.
And it's something that this team continues to show.
Resiliency, never giving up.
I love it.
I hope it continues because I'm going to keep using the Goonies gifts and memes and stuff over and over.
Never say die.
Speaking of amazing, Radio Rodriguez had a day to
remember for the Peoria Chiefs on Wednesday.
Cardinal's top prospect went off in the team's double header against Wisconsin.
It goes four for eight.
All four hits were extra base hits, three doubles and a triple.
Rodriguez is getting triples.
He's now batting 351 over 37 at bats with two bombs and six ribbies.
The Hulk, as we call him, is smashing early on in the season.
The bummer part about it is that Peoria lost both games of that double header.
but Rodriguez just doing serious damage at Peoria.
We'll see how long he lasts down there before he gets bumped up to Springfield.
But my spidey sense to say, it can't be too much longer, right?
Like, what do we learn down here at Peoria?
Let's see what we got when he goes to the next level.
Cardo's top prospect, pitching prospect, I should say.
Liam Doyle did not have a very good day in his outing on, what was that, Tuesday night.
second start of the year for AA Springfield failed to get out of the first inning at Wichita.
A loud three runs on four hits and a walk recorded only two outs.
His ERA is at 17.18.
Here's the thing.
I want to say he's working on stuff and it's not so much about results,
but at the same time, you got to have results.
Like, this can't be good for him.
He's not injured.
He's still got all the velocity you ever want, but he's getting hit.
So whatever he's working on, like slider-wise, I think is what they were saying.
You know, there's a lot of work to be done here.
So not a great start to the 2026 season for Liam Doyle.
But hopefully it'll work out as we move forward.
We just learned from Dustin May, right?
The first two games, yeah, they didn't go well.
And maybe after that, things are great like it's been for Dustin May.
So better days ahead for Doyle.
At Memphis, Hunter Dobbins continues to be impressive, turned in,
another strong outing. One run three hits over five innings. The RA down to 2.93 during this rehab assignment.
I'm very curious to see how high in Bloom handles the roster when Dobbins is fully healthy.
I don't know what they're going to do. I have no idea. Like you're not going to bring them up and put them in the bullpen.
Like you're going to keep them as a starter. So if you were to do that, you know, it's going to be there.
I can't see them pulling the plug on Leahy. So you would think Palante or they go to a six-man rotation when they,
the next month when they don't have as many days off like they do here in April.
So we'll see.
We'll see.
Six-man rotation probably makes a lot of sense.
NL Central wise, you've got the pirates and the Reds at the top of the division at 11 and
seven pirates shut out that really good Nationals offense.
Cardinals learned that firsthand on Wednesday.
But they did it behind Carmen Maginsky.
It wasn't like one of their studs was fishing.
It wasn't Skeens.
It wasn't Schenler.
Carmen Maginsky.
They actually had a starter to throw the first inning.
And then they had Majinsky come in and he threw.
shutout innings in the game. We've had, as Cardinals, we've seen Maginsky shut the Cardinals down a couple
times. So we know what he can do and what he's capable of, but two nothing over the nationals.
Red Smoke the Giants, eight to three. Sal Stewart continues to his tear two dingers, six ribbies.
The Cardinals are a game back of both those guys at 10 and 8. Then you got the Brewers who were at
nine and eight had really severe storms in the Milwaukee area. There's flooding issues everywhere going
on there right now. And if you watch the game at all, the roof was leaking.
had American Family Field like it was pouring on like one spot in the outfield where it was just hammering the warning track.
It was like Truman Show.
You know, in Truman Show and Jim Carrey and the rain follows him in like one circle to wherever he goes.
That's what it was like.
It was just coming down in one spot down there.
It was like going into the stands and stuff.
So crazy stuff weather wise in Milwaukee.
So hopefully all our friends and family up there are safe.
But they end up coming back at meeting three.
Toronto in this game. They score two in the eighth to win at two to one. Cubs are down nine to nine
after they crushed Philadelphia, 11 to two, Nico Horner, three for five with five ribbies
and that win. Inno Central, it gets overlooked year after year after year. And yet again,
here we are early on. Three teams of double digit wins, no, but below 500 at this point. We are
the only division in baseball that can say that right now. So yay, NL Central. Pirates, Reds,
Brewers, all play again today. Cardals and Cubs are off. Chicago has the struggling Mets coming
in town. Mets have lost eight in a row. And I know Juan Soto's been out. He's hurt. But all that money,
all those resources, all those high price free agents, seven and 12, seven and 12. Money doesn't buy
everything. But the Dodgers haven't learned that lesson yet. Dodgers are crazy good still.
Best record in the league. Cardinals are going to travel to Houston for three beginning on Friday.
They've been decimated by injuries with their pitching staff. And all those.
They've won two in a row.
They're still eight and 11 on the season so far.
So hopefully the Cardinals can take advantage of them while they're not healthy.
You know, Kyle Leahy, the scheduled starter for the birds on Friday,
have not seen who's going to get to start for Houston yet.
But we'll update you tomorrow for our next episode.
