All right, Cardinals fans, it's officially 2025. Happy New Year to all of you. And yes,
Nolan Aronado is still a member of your team. If I had told you that statement on New Year's
day last year, your response more than likely would have been, well, yeah, duh, he's
like our best player. But at the beginning of 2025, it is a statement that I don't know,
it kind of bugs people a little bit right now because we've been going on and on and on about
this situation for so long since October, October that we just, we wanted to end. I'm over it,
you're over it. You know, we're exhausted talking about it. But this is the biggest topic going
on with the Cardinals right now. And the Cardinals in Aronado are running out of places for him to go,
to be honest with you. I went over some of my own thoughts on this yesterday. Actually, what is today?
Wednesday. So Monday is actually when I did that. And how, you know, Nolan turning down that deal
that the Cardinals had agreed upon with the Houston Astros, how that was kind of a big kick in the
beanbag to the Cardinals for, you know, their plans moving forward and doing this reset thing. And
the latest on this whole situation, courtesy of Katie Wu and Will Sam and over at the Athletic,
here's what they had to say about it.
The Cardinals believed they had found a suitable home for Aranao.
The Houston Astros weren't just willing to trade for him.
They were also willing to take on a majority of Aranado's remaining three-year,
$74 million salary.
The Cardinals would be responsible for only roughly $5 million of Arananos contract for the next three years.
And again, this is exactly what the cardals were hoping for.
Okay, it was almost perfect for them.
Really, that's all we have to pay?
Okay, cool.
But Arnado not sold on the idea, at least not at the time,
and invoked his full no trade clause to block the deal.
Astros quickly moved on and signed Christian Walker.
Now they don't need a third basement.
Now both the Cardinals and Arnado were facing a plausible reality
where the 10-time Gold Glove winner remains in St. Louis next season.
Now, did anyone ever think they'd feel this way
about Nolan Aronado that we feel like we're almost stuck with him right now. I never thought
I would feel this way about Nolan Aronado. And I feel a little icky thinking this way, but that's
the reality of where we are. The story continues. There has been minimal traction on Aronado's
front since the Astros deal fell through to prominent AL East teams, the Boston Red Sox and New York
Yankees have been linked to Aronado throughout the winter, though it remains unclear whether either team
currently or where either team currently stands in its interest level.
Speculation has circulated around the Yankees in particular,
especially after Paul Goldschmidt signed his deal with the New York Yankees in mid-December.
However, multiple league sources say that while the Yankees like Aronado,
they aren't interested in taking on the majority of his contract,
something that would almost certainly need to happen from the Cardle's perspective.
New York also does not have to trade for a third basement.
It can move.
And this, again, this is Katie Wu and Wynne.
Will salmon together on the athletic here.
They say that they can move Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base and hope that a healthy DJ LaMayhew can man the hot corner consistently next year, which I find a bit hilarious.
And I don't think Yankees fans can feel all that great about that because first off, DJ LaMahue hasn't played in 150 games in the last three seasons.
Okay, he's never made it.
I think it was like a 125 is the most he's played.
He's older than Nolan at 36 and has declined significantly since the COVID year.
of 2020 and you're telling me the Yankees after falling short in the World Series last year and losing
Juan Soto are cool with the ghost of DJ LeMayhew down on third base this year. Come on now,
come on. Yankees fans, if you're here, you can't feel good about that. Anyway, story continues.
The Cardals will so actively try to trade Aronado, but they will be rather reluctant to eat a larger
portion of his salary as the whole point of trading Aronado is to offload his contract.
If the cartels are unable to find a trade partner or remain unwilling to eat more of
Aronado salary. They are prepared to pivot to trading away some of their starting pitchers.
This is not the route they prefer as St. Louis would like to hold on Eric Fetty until at least
the trade deadline. Still, the Cardinals will continue to monitor interest levels of both
Thetty and Stephen Matt's two pitchers who are on expiring deals. The Cardinals could also move
Matt to his own 12.5 million in 2025, even if they also trade Aeronado. Now, like I said,
on Monday.
This is becoming an issue where I'm not sure who really wants him anymore.
Like asking people who are fans of the team and people who, you know,
locked on guys that are with these other teams,
I don't blame other teams for feeling this way because it's quite the pickle that
the Cardinals who gave the no trade clause to all these guys and either these guys
don't want to leave or nobody wants them. And I just, when I'm, when I'm thinking about,
like if I was on the other side of things, why would I want Nolan Arnada on my team? Okay.
There's some good things about him, but there's not overwhelming great things about him.
You know, you've got the defense, which is getting worse. I mean, he's good. He's still great.
Yeah, I still think he's great. He's still great. He's still one of the top third basement
defensively in the league. But it's not.
like he's going to continue that way. It's probably going to start to slide just like his offenses.
So I just, I don't know what the selling point is. Like, hey, you're getting Nolan Aronado on the
down there. Like, I just don't know. I don't know how you sell it to him. And because of all this where,
where, you know, no one's got these, you know, where he wants to go and doesn't have to go anywhere.
We're running out of places to send him. And you've got some of these other guys who just didn't
want to leave like you know sunny gray and wilson get your hair is like the team the cardinals who want
to do this reset they can't even do it the way they want to like they're like guys we we want to do
this and people like no we don't want we don't want to go anywhere we're cool so um it's it's just
tough it's a tough spot for the cardinals to be in and it's not it's not the players fault
I mean the cardals are the ones who gave them the no trade clauses you know this is that they put
themselves into this position and the, the, the, the players have every right to say,
uh, we're not going anywhere. So it's, it's tough. And it's not like we don't like these players
too, you know what I mean? It's not like these guys are jerks or they're, they're not
performing very well. The one person that I'm saying that isn't performing up to standards was
probably Miles Michaelis. We pick on him a lot here. But, you know, he's also the guy that led you
in quality starts this past year. So there is some good there, but it's not like he is, you know,
he's the one that I'm like, I'm shocked that he has a no trade clause.
We've talked about this before.
But speaking of talking about things, fan feedback.
We've got to take a break.
Fan feedback about this mess.
We're going to talk about it more coming up next on Lockdown Cardinals.
The NFL playoffs are almost here,
but it's not too late to get in on the regular season action with Fandul,
America's number one sports book.
Because right now new customers can finish the season strong with $250 in bonus bets

Fanduel has so many ways for you to pick up a W.
Not only can you have that on which players are going to score a touchdown
and how many points each team will score,
but you can also build one of those parles, all right?
That really improves the return you're getting.
It's more difficult to win it, but it's more fun because you're like,
come on, come on, you get into it a little bit more.
Parles can be really, really fun.
And that's how you can boost your winnings even more.

Feedback always welcome and encourage.
It's time to get into some of this fan feedback.
We've had a lot of episodes that have kind of lined up.
And we've got, you know, so many comments and things that people want to say about the cardals
and what they're doing and what they're not doing.
and we've got to get through some of these.
So let's read a few.
We've been discussing the plans of trading players away,
slashing payroll, starting younger players.
Jim Hawkins here says,
getting rid of Ryan Helsley,
he wants to talk about Ryan Helsley.
So getting rid of Ryan Helsley,
when you have starters that can't go more than five or six sittings,
is not a good idea.
This is where the Cardinals have discussed,
possibly trading Ryan Helsley to two other teams.
So, Jim, thank you for the feedback.
As of right now, we actually don't think the Cardinals are getting rid of Hellsley.
That's another thing.
Like they're trying to do this reset and make moves and they haven't made any of these moves.
Like any of this stuff we thought they might do, none of it has happened so far.
It's been really, really bizarre how quiet things have been.
And it now seems from the reporting that we've gone through that they are more than content to hang on to Ryan
Hellsley now, pay him his raise that he's going to get an arbitration this year and perhaps revisit the idea of moving him
add the trade deadline instead, or if things aren't as bad as some believe they will be.
I think, you know, they were predicted to win like 76 games or something.
I think somewhere in that facility, like mid-70s.
But if things are better than that and go better than what people are saying,
maybe they hang on to him and play out his original contract and talk about an extension.
That's obviously a possibility.
The only reason that you move him is because you'd be getting premium assets in return.
And that's the idea is that he's worth a lot to people right now.
You know, he's this shiny toy that they can have.
And he's the top reliever in the National League.
And, you know, he's throwing 101.
And he's, you know, he's never been better than what he was this past year.
And you're trying to entice other teams to like, hey, what do you think?
And maybe they give up enough where you're like, dude, it's hard to turn that down.
If the trade you were getting offered are actually beneath what you feel Ryan
Hellsley's value is, then the thing the Cardinals are doing is they don't have to trade him.
So perhaps they got some offers that were very underwhelming.
So of course, if you don't move him in the off season and you think about doing it at the trade
deadline, you do risk, you know, him getting injured.
He's had some injury problems in the past.
What if he declines?
What if he becomes really, really hitable next year out of nowhere?
I mean, these are the things that you're risking.
That would make him quite less valuable at the trade.
trade deadline next season. But, you know, if these trade offers have been
overwhelming. Again, if you don't feel like it's enough, then it's not enough. And you
just continue to move on. You know, you kind of go back to what the Yankees gave up to get
Devin Williams out of Milwaukee. And I think most fans felt like when they saw that show,
they're like, that's it. That's all. That's it. That's all they had to give up. And if you feel
that way, and that's the kind of stuff you're getting offered for Hellsley, then why would you
ship him for less than you think he's worth. So, um, don't have to do it. But when it comes to like,
you know, starters only going five or six setting, that's just the name of the game anymore.
The idea, and I know how it is because we always point, uh, but Bob Gibson used to do this.
That was a long time ago, boys and girls. It is not that way major league baseball anymore.
They want five, possibly six settings, get those quality starts and then hand it over to the
bullpen. That is the plan for almost every team out there right now. And, uh,
it ain't going to be changing anytime soon.
So I'd argue that you need middle relief guys more than you need closers because I feel like the hardest
doubts, not so much the last three.
I mean, those are always very difficult, obviously, but you still got, you know, nine
outs in between before you get to that closer.
And that's where we see games shift a lot more than we do at the back end.
So, but yeah, I am shocked that he is still a member of the Carls.
I was surprised people who didn't want him.
but I'm not going to be mad if Ryan Helsley is back on this team next year because he's quite good.
Big Bird Reese says sign Helsley.
He's proven he's a top three closer in the game.
Quit screwing around.
Moe DeWitt need to get their heads out of their butts and sign good quality starting pitching and get a rotation,
which is actually good for once.
Tweak the outfield too.
Newpar needs to go.
The rotation is another spot that the Cardinals wanted to shed payroll and give innings to younger guys.
but as I mentioned earlier, you know, Sunny Gray didn't want to leave.
Miles Michaelis, who again, somehow has a no trade clause.
It doesn't appear to want to go anywhere.
I don't know what you would be getting in return for Miles Michaelis at this point anyway,
but that's two fits of a normal starting rotation that are locked up.
You've also got Eric Fetty.
You've got Stephen Mats, who could become trade pieces if this Aronado thing doesn't get figured out too.
And then you think about the stable of younger arms that are,
still available to you in the organization. Michael McGreevy looked really good last year,
Andre Palante, Gordon Gricepo, is he going to get a longer look as a starter this year?
What are we doing with Zach Thompson? Does anybody any idea what they're going to do with Zach
Thompson? Matthew Libertort, obviously is somebody that could still slide into that rotation,
although I like him in the bullpen. He looked really good in the bullpen this past year. And I like
just his demeanor when he was on the mound as a reliever as opposed to what he's
he looked like as a starter. I envision him it would be, you know, like the dream scenario is that he could
be kind of like your Andrew Miller type of guy, obviously easier said than done. But, you know, I'd like
to see him used in that way, the way Miller was used in his prime when he was in Cleveland.
Same could be said for Zach Thompson. He's one of those tweener guys where you've seen him be good
in the rotation. You've seen him be good in the bullpen, but you've got to pick a lane,
Cardinals figure it out.
Quinn Matthews obviously intrigues the hell out of me and everybody else.
After his monster year in the minors this year, it's already been stated that he's going to
get every opportunity to crack the rotation to make the roster in the spring.
Does Team Kent's, does he make it up on the roster?
He's now on the 40 man.
Does he make it into the big leagues this year?
Does he stay as a starter?
Does it become a bullpen guy?
I don't know.
A lot of people think that with his size and stuff, that maybe he would be better suited as a
bullpen guy.
about Tocola Robberso figure out.
Do they figure into things?
Not in 2026.
We know that's probably part of the plan,
but I'm thinking more like this year in 2025.
These are things we just don't know yet.
But hopefully we'll get more clarity in the spring.
But as far as like going out and buying a rotation,
that is not in the cards.
No pun intended.
That is not going to happen.
They want these guys in their organization already to get a shot
and see what they got.
They're tired of having them just kind of sit back and wait,
and wait and wait.
And then as we've seen,
guys go to other teams and end up shining.
The thing I guess we worry about a little bit,
at least I do,
is what about the regression?
What if McGreevy,
who minor league numbers didn't really dazzle a lot of people?
And then he comes up to the show and he's like,
whoa, where was this?
His whole career.
You know, what if he,
takes a step back. What about Palante? What if he takes a step back? You know, we believe at this moment that
they are viable starters. They look apart last year. But what happens if they take a step back? Where do we go then?
So, I don't know, these are things that you worry about. Obviously, you know, none of these guys are going to be
perfect. They're all not going to come out and be like Paul Skeens and just dominate like it's, it's something that you have to
think about. And that's why you've got so many young arms that are available, which
is a good thing, healthy arms too, mind you, outside of what, Drew Rom, he's the only guy that,
you know, was coming off an injury last year, but most people seem to be pretty darn healthy in the
minors. So they're going to get their shots. They're going to get their shots. But, you know,
you hear all these names and stuff and you're like, I mean, you can see how they could put together
a pretty decent rotation. Is it going to compete with like the Dodgers? Hell no. Hell no, it's not.
And they know that. But at least they've got young, cheaper arms.
arms that are coming up that are under control and they don't have to overpay for guys who are 30 and
will start to slide here soon and don't have to give them seven year deals and stuff. So that's the hope.
And that's why they want to develop these guys and, you know, see what they got already in-house.
I want to talk about John Moseilock. We got some questions about him next. We'll do that coming up on Lockdown Cardinals.
Now, I love going to live events. And it doesn't matter whether it's sports, whether it's music, comedy.
Even theater. My wife made me go to Wicked when it was on stage. And like, even that was cool. Like, I didn't think I was going to be into it. I thought it was great. I like it better than the movie, to be honest with you. But there's just, because there's nothing like going to live events. You know, you're feeling of the excitement and the anticipation of it all. When you're walking in, you know, the energy of the crowds, I just love it. And when I need tickets to go to any event, any event, even out of town stuff, I use the game.
Time app because I know that it is the easiest way to find seats that I won. And believe it or not, Game Time has now made it even easier for you to get tickets to your favorite events with their new feature, Game Time Picks. Now, the feature just filters out all the fluff to show you the incredible deals on great seats that they have available to you so you don't have to waste your time searching through thousands of tickets. And right underneath where it shows you the date and time, a number of tickets that you want,
you just click on GT picks and foam, easy. Filters all that crap out, get you down to give you the best option.

All right. Pastor BKC says J-D.
And so Mel Zaylock is out of the organization completely.
we will not move forward with any significance.
Not trying to be negative,
but that is just a reality of where we are.
In response to that,
A.B. Kennedy says,
lifelong Redbird here.
I'm a lifelong fan of the Redbirds here, maybe.
I don't know.
I hate Mosea with a passion.
He's ruining our illustrious franchise.
Guys, guys, guys, guys.
I know.
I know.
You're going to get on me for this one.
Let's show Johnny.
There you.
Look at Mo.
Johnny Mo.
I know it's easy to blame Mo.
And he certainly deserves the criticism.
We've seen a lot of bad moves the last couple of years that have put this team in a situation where they are.
And it's not a good one, right?
But I almost feel like, you know, the more that I think about this stuff,
because we've had a lot of time to think about this off season because nothing has happened.
But I almost feel like this was inevitable.
That at some point that this team was going to have to, and it didn't matter who was in charge.
Eventually, they're going to have to endure a rebuild, a reset of,
of some sort because these contracts got to a point where ownership was not comfortable spending
that much money on a player.
All right.
They were never going to go to $200 million and $300 million deals.
I mean, their biggest free agent deals, Contreras, they don't even sniff what the top guys
you're making.
You know, it's not even close.
And they're not trying to go to that level.
They don't want to do that.
I think what they want is to, if they're going to pay somebody a big chunk like that,
they want it to be one of their own.
They don't want to go out and do it through free agency.
And lucky for everyone that is fed up with John Moseilac,
he's going to be out after this year.
He's doing his best right now to set things up for Heim to take over and move forward
instead of him being the guy that has to come in and slash payroll
and trade away the fan favorites and stuff like.
He's like doing the dirty work right now.
He's being the bad guy.
He's taking the hits.
He's the guy right now.
You know, he's trying to trade away, Nolan Aronado.
He's letting Paul Goldschmidt walk.
You know, he's saving Heinbblum from being that guy the way he had to be that guy in Boston with that Mookie Betts deal.
And the Sox fans have never let him live it down.
And it was a bad deal.
It didn't work out whatsoever.
Mookie Bets goes to the Dodgers and the Red Sox have not.
nothing to show for it. And that's awful. You don't want to see that happen. We kind of just saw that
happened with Tyler O'Neill. That was a terrible trade. That didn't work out whatsoever. And I know
that many of us have Moe fatigue. And he admits it that much that he's like,
people are kind of sick of me. And it's time to move on. But at least he's, I'm going to give him
credit about he's at least trying to make this transition smooth for Heinblum and the organization.
And, you know, also kick-starting the player development properly. Finally, you know,
they made the choice to spend more on trying to win now by signing bigger free agents and trading
for guys like Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Aronado.
And unfortunately, those moves did not work.
They did not work.
And that's on Mo.
You know, these were his choices, you know, letting other players walk and hanging on to other guys.
These were bad choices by Mo.
And I'm not fully sticking up for the guy.
but I appreciate that what's happening right now with the organization, that, you know, he's sticking around and trying to set it up.
So Bloom didn't have to be the bad guy.
And I respect that.
If you don't, that's fine.
If you think I'm totally off on this, let me know in the comments section.
But that's just kind of where my head's at on this whole thing.
I'm just kind of tired of bitching about John Moseilock.
And I'm ready to move forward, just like the organization is.
And sadly, we're kind of stuck here because of some of the moves.
made in some of the contracts that he gave out. So that's, you know, kind of painted himself in a corner with
this stuff too. All right. One more. This is about Nolan Aronado. Matt Ketchy. Matt Ketchie says,
hold on to Nolan Aronado until the trade deadline. Move instead either Fetty, Matt, or Michaelis,
says it's unlikely on the ladder. I agree with you. There will be a contender that needs a defensive
whiz like Aronado with great baseball IQ and some pop in the bat. He's a good rebound candidate,
all those best years are likely behind him.
We will reap more prospect capital waiting for demand to go up like it does every July.
All right, Matt, appreciate you.
All of that makes sense.
But the reason why they're trying to get this done now in my eyes and not wait until a deadline is, A, they want to move the money now.
They don't want to have to keep paying him.
They want to move on and just get their books in line for other things down the road.
Also, B, they want to let them.
the younger guys get the reps. I mean, you're not going to bench Nolan Aronado. Like, if he's on the
roster, he's going to be down there at third base and he's going to, you know, take 600 to bats and he's
going to be in the lineup every day. Not that that's a horrible thing, but again, they want the reps to go
to people like Nolan Gorman and Thomas Jacey. That's what they're looking for. Plus, I doubt
Nolan at this point in his career, like when you talk about doing a midseason trade deadline deal,
I don't know if he wants to be a part at something like that. To be honest with you,
just my opinion, but he strikes me as the type of guy that would absolutely hate getting traded in the middle of the season.
And if he doesn't want that to happen, guess what?
He has got the power to prevent that from happening because he's got, say it with me now, a no trade clause.
So he can do that and say, no, I'm not getting moved in the middle of the season at the trade deadline.
I don't care who wants me.
I'm sticking it out.
I would rather do this in the offseason.
That way mentally he can prepare to be at a new system.
and stuff like that.
Clean break and a fresh start for Nato,
I believe is the right move.
But the problem is the places that he wants to go,
they don't seem to really want him all that much.
At least not at the price the Cardinals are trying to move him for.
Again, this is a very tough situation that they're in because,
first off, nobody's mad at anybody.
Everybody's getting along just fine.
It's no big deal.
Nobody has to be traded.
The Cardinals can afford.
and Aronado. They don't have to trade them. They want to cut payroll. They'll find other ways to do it.
That story mentioned with Katie Wu and Will Salmon that they would pivot to a plan B where they
would trade away some starting pitching, but they don't really want to do that either.
You know, both sides just feel it's in their best interest that a deal gets done now so that
everyone would be happy and can move on. I just am curious which side is going to bend first.
you know, who bends in the end here?
Where the Cardinals end up just paying more of his salary just to move on and get it going to someone who wants him and somewhere that no one wants to go or will Nolan have to expand the places that he's willing to go to so that a deal can get done before next season too.
I mean, we're in January.
We've got spring training is not that far away in the grand scheme of things.
And I'm sure both sides would love to get it done.
before that happened. So the saga goes on. Saga goes on. So hopefully we'll get some answers here
sooner rather than later. Before we wrap up today, a quick shout out to our guys over at the
Blues, specifically Jordan Dedington for the goalie mask that he rocked at the Winter Classic
yesterday. Poo-Hawls Yachtie and Wainwright were on it. Just beautiful. If you're watching on
YouTube, you can see the helmet right now, courtesy of the St. Louis Blues website. Badass.
Right. Badass. Blues creamed the Blackhawks yesterday, too. So that was cool. Love the uniforms. I honestly, I wasn't a big fan when they announced those uniforms. I was like, I don't know. They look good out on the eyes. They look better on the ice than I thought they would. So shout out to the blues. And shout out to Lockdown Blues. If you guys haven't listened yet, Haley Taylor Simon, taking care of you guys with Lockdown Blues or if you're a Blues and a Cardinals fan, which almost all of us are. If you live in St. Louis,
Louis. You love them both, probably. If you haven't checked out her podcast yet, why not, why not give
her a try? Give her a try after a big victory yesterday. It's for you. Thank you for making Locked
