The St. Louis Cardinals dropped their third game in a row with a 6 to 5 loss to the Kansas City Royals who out Cardinaled the Cardinals to take the series.
This is Locked on Cardinals.
You are Locked on Cardinals.
Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Hey there, Cardinals fans. I'm Jaddy Haford.
And today's episode is brought to you by O'Doo.
Great organizations win because operations matter.
why you should get O-Doo. Try for free today at O-D-O-D-com slash locked-on. That's O-D-O-O-O-O-O-com
slash locked on. How many times could we say the word Cardinals in that opener? A whole bunch, right?
On today's show, Nolan Gorman update. Where the hell's he been? Kept looking for the box
score. Where Nolan Gorman go? Well, we know where he's at now and what's going on with him since
he's been demoted. So I'll update that for you. Number one need for the Cardinals, if they want to
continue their current path of making the playoffs seems to be pitching, right?
That really seems to be the top priorities.
So who are some of the other names that could help this team?
But we're going to start with the loss on Friday, 6-5.
6-5 loss to the Royals.
Really wasn't that close of a game.
Cardinals made it close at the very end.
They also lost big on Thursday night, which we, I mean,
the Royals offense just beat the.
snot out of them. Libby was terrible. What do you want me to say about it? But the,
the Royals have now taken two in the first three games of this series. And it's, you know,
when you look at the record for the Kansas City Royals, you're like, what? Who is this team?
And like watching them play over the last couple nights. I'm like, how is this team 14, 13 games
under 500? Like they don't even have their full roster of people. They got a lot of
of injuries right now. Bobby Wood Jr. went down.
You know, Vinnie Pass Quantino is out.
They got a bunch of dudes that are, that are busted up.
Michael Garcia's not in there.
And they look great.
They look great.
I've been impressed the whole time.
So I don't know if that says something really good about the Royals or, you know,
bad about what the Cardinals are doing right now.
So probably a little bit of both.
But in this one on Friday, Cardinals jumped out to an early lead,
just like they did on Thursday.
This time they're up to nothing.
to a sack fly by Jordan Walker and an Yvonne Herrera RBI single.
And until the fourth inning, Michael McGreevy, he looked excellent.
And I even tweeted or exed, whatever you would call it.
It was like, man, Michael McGreevy looks sharp tonight.
And oh, boy, that opened up the floodgates.
People started tweeting back at me and were like, bro, why'd you have to say that?
Don't, no, no, no, no.
Don't do that.
And lo and behold, it all comes apart in that fourth inning when the Royals' ability to hit pitches.
they were out of the zone, like became a superpower.
Lane Thomas doubles on a sweeper up in the zone.
Bad pitch, right?
But then Caglione somehow hits a curveball that is off the plate and, like,
it's not a strike?
That's not a really good hitable pitch.
You're not supposed to swing at that and actually make contact.
He gets a single out of it.
And then Massey singles on a change up low and one.
way out of the zone. Again, I would be, if you were to show me like what the batting average is
on somebody swinging at a pitch like that, it's probably pretty bad. But it worked. That's a single.
McGreeby then walks the guy and then Isaac Collins, who reverted back to his Milwaukee Brewer's days,
has not been good with the Royals, but plays the Cardinals and looks like he did when he was with
the Brewers, hits a fastball. This one again, out of the zone. It was up
and out of the zone, drives it to left for a two run double, makes it four to two.
All of a sudden, you're like, wait, how did this inning get away from us?
Like, what, what just happened?
And it was a real bummer because McGreevy was kind of cruising.
And it just went, three hits on three pitches that have no business being swung at,
let alone made contact with for base hits.
Then in the fifth inning, Caglio drives a fastball up in the zone for an opposite,
field home run. Give him credit. Put a good swing on it. He's been a hot hitter lately.
Makes it five to two. McGreevy goes five innings, five runs on eight hits, just two K's,
one walk. That one walk did come around to score. Last two games from McGreevy,
but knocked around a little bit, seven runs, 15 hits, three walks, four Ks and 11 innings pitched.
Now winless in his last seven games. Did you realize that? I was going through his stats.
I'm like, whoa, whoa. McGreevy hasn't won a game in his last seven starts. And we all
knew that the lack of swing and miss would
be an issue for McGreevy. We always said it would be. And
that makes life tough. You know, when guys are
not only hitting things that are around the zone, but knocking
balls around the yard off bitches that are well off the plate
and should be hit in the first place. You know, what are you going to do?
Like, the Royals are just playing very well in this series. They're not
making mistakes and they're doing the little things right. Offensively,
the Cardinals kind of fell asleep after they
scored those first two runs. Not a whole lot was going on until the ninth inning.
They didn't get a hit after the Nathan Church triple, which was awesome to see him hustle and get
that. But that was with two outs and you knew they were going to strand them. But that was in the fifth
inning. So they didn't do nothing until you got to the ninth inning. And that's when they made
the game interesting. Walker singles with one out, Newport hits a ground ball. They get the
force out on Jordan. And then the offense kind of came back to life.
Mason win, doubled to drive in new.
Nelson Velasquez had a really good at bat.
That was fun.
Ended up drawing the walk.
And then both of those guys came around on the two-run bloop single by Blaze Jordan to
right field who dunked in there, which brought the go-ahead run to the plate.
And you're like, oh, my gosh, are they going to do this again?
Remember they did something similar to the A's out in Sacramento.
But Jose Fermin ends up hitting a ground ball that, you know, it probably had a good chance
of being a hit, but another slick play at shortstop.
And that ended the ball game.
Royals defense was insane in this game.
Like watching that.
What was it?
Was it the seventh or the eight?
One of the innings where like both sides just made,
I think it was the eighth inning.
I think it was the eighth inning.
That's when everybody made like awesome plays.
Like it was crazy.
Multiple highlight real plays.
Yeah, eighth inning for sure.
Went after two really nice plays to get the first two outs.
by the third basement and by the shortstop.
Then Yvonne Herrera hits a ground ball up the middle.
Massey playing second base,
dives across and then flips it to the shortstop Tolbert,
who's coming across because he was trying to range over and get the ball,
but kind of almost like a double play flip,
but like Massey had dove,
there's no double player.
He flips this of the shortstop who throws and gets Herrera by a couple steps.
Like it was awesome.
It sucked as a Cardinals fan.
It was crazy stuff.
But yeah, the Royals defense shining this one.
They got the timely hits.
They got the W.
They did just about everything a ball club's supposed to do to get a win.
Things went their way.
Cardinals, obviously, you know, we look at what's happened the last two games.
Libby, awful.
McGreevy, one really bad inning where it just wasn't working for him.
It wasn't like, that's the thing, is McGreevy, you're going to look at the runs and you're like,
oh, gosh, man, he really didn't have that great of a night.
But they were hitting things that weren't supposed to.
to be hit. Like it was goofy. It was a weird game. But the Cardinals could use an upgrade in the
rotation for sure. We know they need help. Everybody needs help in the bullpen. All right. So we don't
have to go through the hundreds of names of bullpen people. But what are some rotation names,
some starters that might be available and be kind of like in the Cardinals range of guys that they
could go after. So we'll talk about those two or three or four guys. I got a few here. Coming up next
on Locked on Cardinals. Baseball players,
are known for their routines, whether it's a lucky jersey, a pregame ritual, jumping over the chalk,
you know, stuff like that, or sticking to the same preparation every day.
Wade Boggs used to eat fried chicken before every game back of the day, you know?
Consistency matters, though.
That's the point.
And when it comes to hair thinning, there can be a lot of products out there that are going to make you promises,
but not always a lot of confidence behind them.
And that's why more people are looking for solutions backed by real science and trusted experts.
Neutrophol is the number one dermatitis.

Another like watching the Cardinals live and in person at Bush Stadium
or anywhere.
You go to Kaufman Stadium, watch them in Kansas City.
It's been a fun crowd there too.
But you get the excitement, you get the fans, the interaction, the, just the ambience of the ballpark.
Of course, at Bush Stadium, you get the tarps off section, which is great.
Only problem is getting tickets can sometimes feel like a grind, long cues, surprise fees, prices jumping at checkout.
That's why there's game time.
Game time app is going to come in there and be your hero.
It gives fans the advantage with constant innovation.
It's going to help you unlock amazing tickets and experiences.
and it does it in just a few taps.

So, and I have, I reserve the right to change my mind on anything I say on the show.
So stop getting mad at me about things.
But I try to keep it consistent.
But offensively, are you really worried about this team right now?
Because I'm not.
Like right now, I'm not.
As long as nothing happens to like the top four in your order.
J.J. Herrera, Walker, Burley.
I think he can hang with most of the teams.
But the pitching staff, it's been an issue all season.
We knew it would be.
It was the weakest thing about this Cardinals organization for the last few years.
They haven't been able to develop any pitchers,
and they go out and spend a lot of money on guys who don't end up being worth it.
And the starting rotation of the bullpen, they're suffering because of this.
It's a lack of talent.
Libertory has been a major disappointment.
He was your starting day, you know, your opening day pitcher.
And look at them now.
Like the last three games have been awful.
You know,
and it's really frustrating because some games you see flashes of like,
all right,
here we go.
Like this is the kind of guy we need.
And as I've said,
a million times he'll have the one bad inning and it ruins everything.
But more times than not,
he can barely make it through five innings.
The cardals are actually,
which is weird, by the way,
they're 10 and five in games that Matthew Livertor starts.
he's four and three in the last seven games.
The team is stuff, four and three, I should say.
And the last seven games started by Libby, despite him carrying an ERA of 6.82 with seven home runs against.
Now, I know he got his butt kicked on Thursday night, which has inflated those numbers a bit, but still, they are what they are.
Kyle Leahy has been another issue, five and four on the year, but the team is six and eight in his starts.
Last five, though, they're one and four.
the ERA is at 5.92.
You know, we're at the part of the season where you start thinking about what's going to happen to the trade deadline and where you've got to improve.
Right now, the Cardinals are in a playoff spot.
We want to stay there.
You want to perhaps even give Milwaukee a run for their money?
Guys are going to have to be better.
Michael McGreevy, one rough inning on Friday night, but he's been solid over all this season.
You can't complain too much.
Dustin May has been on a real heater recently.
Andre Palante. He's been outstanding. ERA at 3.2 over his last seven starts. The team is six and one in his last seven starts.
You've got Hunter Dobbins, ready to roll at Memphis, a guy that I believe they have a lot of faith in.
Some fans are clamoring for Quinn Matthews to finally get a chance at the big league level.
Still walks, a lot of dudes down there at Memphis, but I mean, what are you going to use them for?
Like, you got to figure something out, right? And this is where, like,
we're used to some of these bigger names that are in the organization already, guys like
Richard Fitz, Tocoa Robey, Cooper Jerpy working his way back.
Eishon Henderson's been hurt.
That's where that's kind of like taking their toll on the depth that you've got because
you're using a lot of guys already and there's not much else left down there that's
ready to help you at the big league level.
Starter-wise, starter-wise.
I know we still got Luis Gastilum.
Cool to see Max Ratchett getting a shot at the big league.
level like I'm cool with this and and in high bloom seems to be good about giving guys a shot you know he
he gives you a couple months you know to these guys that have been on this roster for uh most of the
season and then he's like look uh you got to put up or shut up at some point um but because
there's not a lot of depth at the starting rotation in this organization most of it is kind of
younger the guys that are decent maybe a bryson mott's will get a shot I don't know but um let's
think about life outside of what we already have in New York, okay?
It might be available at the deadline.
And when I say stuff that's like, you know, within reason for the Cardinals, I mean somebody
who, where you're not giving up a ton of prospects to go get them.
So not the Terrick Scoobles or the Joe Ryan's.
Even some of these other guys we're going to talk about, it's probably going to cost too much.
Because ESPN's Jeff Passon listed the Cardinals as a fit for a few of these guys.
You know, I mentioned Byron Buxton the other day.
and Joe Ryan and why I don't think that makes a lot of sense for what this team is trying to do,
or at least the organization team trying to win a championship,
but what we're trying to do organizationally doesn't really vibe with what it would cost to go get guys like that.
And most of the people, most of the fans have agreed with me and have said,
look, why would I want 32-year-old Byron Buxton who has a history of being hurt?
Like, why would we do that?
And I'm like, yeah, I get it.
It's just, you know, this is what we.
do we create discussion and we we hash it out together so uh jeff pass and listen to the cardals
as a fit for a few guys other than joe ryan uh two of them from the angels reed detmers
and jose soriano who he ranked as their number six and number seven guys in his top 100
uh trade pieces uh detmers is having a fantastic year i like him a lot he's got a lot of swing
and miss something the cardals really really need and it would be awesome to get him he's got
two more years of control after the season.
That's going to sting because that's going to, it's going to hurt.
He's a former first round pick.
Angels are going to ask for a mighty, mighty large bag to get this guy.
And I just don't think it makes a lot of sense for the Cardinals to give up the beginnings
of what they're building here to go get somebody like that.
Same thing with Jose Soriano, two more years of control.
He was on fire early on in the season, has come back down to Earth.
The ERA is like around five since the start of May.
Strikeouts decent, not amazing, but decent.
Would you kick the tires on it and see?
Sure, but the fact that there's two more years of control, it's going to cost you.
Freddie Peralta from the Mets, he has as a fit.
Number 11 on his list, by the way, only signed through the rest of the year.
So the return that you have to give the Mets for somebody like Freddie Peralta might not be as much,
but it's Freddie Peralta.
He's a big name.
And plenty of suitors are going to be chasing just that guy because of his name.
And he's good.
He really is.
And I just think somebody else is going to be willing to give up a whole lot more
than the Cardinals would to get him and then watch him walk away because he's not going to sign here.
He's going to go get big money from somebody else.
Former Cardinals Michael Waka.
I shouldn't say Cardinals with an S,
but former Cardinal Michael Waka is certainly.
certainly an interesting one. He's with the Royals now. We're not scheduled to see him in this series,
but we did see him at Bush Stadium. And I wanted him to come back to St. Louis when he was a
free agent leaving Boston. I was like, why not? He goes to Kansas City, and he's been good.
Solid guy. Doesn't strike out a ton of a ton of guys, which is something the Cardinals could use,
but he's not going to be as expensive because of that.
He's going to be 35 here very soon, and there's only one more year of control,
like guaranteed year of control at 14 million, which isn't a whole lot.
And then you have a club option for the same amount in 2028.
I think he's a solid fit.
I would love to have a Michael Walker in this rotation instead of a Leahy or a Leverator right now.
I would love it.
You would love it.
So we'll see.
That could be something if the Royals don't turn things around.
way they played the last two nights, they're going to win the World Series.
So same can be said about Seth Lugo, who the Cardinals just lost to on Friday night.
Another year of control after this, a little more expensive, $21.5 million.
There is no option for another year.
He's 36.
He's older, but he's also a fit.
He's also somebody that makes some sense.
He's been pretty good since he got to Kansas City.
He was another guy when he was a free agent coming over,
from, I believe it was the Padres.
And I was like, Seth Lugo makes a lot of sense for the Cardinals.
And he went to the Royals instead.
Now, neither Waka nor Lugo are stars or not.
And I just don't think the Cardinals are going to be in the market for a star
because it's going to cost way too much, just way too much.
And I just, I'm not punting on this rebuild yet.
Like, I love our team.
I think it's a lot of fun.
I'm enjoying the fact that they're letting guys figure it out at this level and the Cardinals are winning.
And this is a valuable season for a lot of these guys.
But I'm not trading two or three prospects to get one guy to maybe get in the playoffs and not put us up at the same level as the Braves, the Dodgers, the Brewers, and not go anywhere anyway.
And I get it like you can't win if you don't try.
I understand that, but I just, I don't, I don't think they're ready yet.
I just don't.
And that's what I said in our last episode talking about the deals with Minnesota.
I just don't think they're ready yet.
And they need to keep building.
And again, a lot of people agreed with me.
So I appreciate you guys chiming in about that stuff.
But the idea of maybe a Waka or a Lugo, you had somebody like that to the team.
And it's certainly an upgrade over what you're getting from Libby or Leahy,
specifically Leahy.
Like, I feel like they're not going to move Libby.
out yet. They're not, they're not ready for that. But I could see Leahy going back to the
bullpen. But you could move them there. They go to the pin. They've both had success there in
the past. You know, Robbie Ray of the Giants is another name that seems kind of interesting
to me. Former Sy Young Award winner. He's not striking out people the way you would like him to,
but, you know, good veteran pitcher from the left side there. Trevor Rogers from Baltimore
said to be a free agent after the year, isn't having a great year, but was really good last
season. What would it cost to get him out of Baltimore at this point? You know, can they help him
regain the magic from 2025? We see. We'll see. We'll see. But those are just a couple of names to
think about. Up next, where are you, Nolan Gorman? Oh, we know where he is. Since he got demoted,
he is not with the Memphis Redbirds. In fact, he's down in Florida. We're going to talk about him and
what he's working on coming up next on Lockedown Cardinals. Running a business shouldn't feel like you're
trying to connect a bunch of systems that were never designed to work together. One app for accounting,
another for inventory, another for sales, and somehow none of them actually talk to each other.
And that's where Odu comes in. Odu is an all-in-one business management software that brings
every part of your business together in one powerful platform. Kind of like Voltron.
brings the five lines together to have one massive awesome robot.
From sales and accounting to inventory and marketing, everything works in one place,
helping your team move faster, stay organized to focus on growing the business instead
of just managing software.
The best organizations know that success isn't just about talent.
It's about having everyone working toward the same goal, and that's true in sports
just like it is in business.
You know, the cardinals have to make sure that everybody is on the same page moving forward
to create what we hope is a world championship team at some point.
Great organizations win because operations matter.

And I thought maybe he was dealing with an injury or something,
and that's why he hadn't been activated at Memphis.
But actually, what ended up happening is they sent him down to
to Florida. I'd work on his swing before getting back into games.
Now, Derek Gould at the St. Louis Post Dispatch at SCL Today.com, did an awesome article about this.
And there's way more like in-depth stuff in this article.
So I encourage you to go check it out for yourself.
But I'm going to give you a couple of excerpts here from it from Derek's article here.
He's been assigned to the Cardinals lowest affiliate, the Florida Complex League Cardinals,
so that he can focus at the spring training complex away from games on the swing that has created
it struggles for him in them.
The Cardinals did a brief version of this
with outfielder Jordan Walker in spring training
when he did not appear in games for three days
and spent them instead in the cage.
And I remember us all talking about that,
like, wow, he's having such a hard time.
They're like, all right, we got to go back to the basics here.
And that's kind of what's happening here with Gorman.
Over the past year or more,
there have been other prospects that have also done this
besides Jordan Walker, and that's worked out nicely.
Joshua Baez has done it.
What's he doing at Memphis?
Yeah, destroying the baseball.
Trey Richardson, what had he been doing at Peoria
before he got promoted, destroying the baseball?
Colton Ledbetter, work in progress,
but all of them have stepped away from games to focus on
what Gould described as intensive drills with coaches
to adjust a swing before returning to face pitchers in competition.
So it's really kind of about not putting too much on their plate.
let's get it all figured out here first before we make the next step where you have to go against
somebody who is trying to embarrass you and get you out. So I get it. You got to go back to point A,
and that's what they're doing. And you've got to do anything and everything to figure this thing out
for Gorman because he looked absolutely lost before the demotion happened. You know, we want him
to be a productive member of the team in this organization. I've had so many people go into the
comment section go, look, I feel real bad. I love Gorman, but yeah, things were,
were bad. And Blaze Jordan, give him credit. He's taking this thing and running with it so
far. You know, he's looked mighty strong at third base and at first base, made a couple of nice
plays at third again on Friday night at the plate, hitting 300, one home runs, seven ribbyes,
five runs scored in just 30 plate appearances. Just to get for it, just for example,
Oh, Gorman before he went down was three for his last 50, 27 strikeouts, five walks.
He was doing nothing.
The strikeouts went up.
The other numbers were cratering.
It was awful.
Something had to be done, and they finally pulled the trigger on it.
According to Gould, an emphasis of the work in Florida is going to be on the bat path.
That's what he's working on.
So a really good article again.
I encourage you to check it out.
We wish Nolan the best.
I hope he can find his swing again.
I hope he becomes that power threat.
We always wanted him to be.
And he can help this team.
at some point or another.
But I can't say I got a lot of faith in it.
With the loss, the Cardinals have now dropped three in a row.
They've missed out on a chance to make up some ground in the NL Central.
The Brewers have lost two in a row.
Meanwhile, the Cubs have won back-to-back games.
They're now just a game behind the Cardinals.
Pete Crow Armstrong, man.
The guy I'm playing in fantasy baseball this week has him,
and he's just gone bonkers.
He's crushing me this week because of what PCA is doing.
So Pittsburgh lost again.
There's still three back of the Cardinals.
Red's got shut out in New York against the Yankees.
They're five back of the Cardinals.
You get the day off on Saturday because, as you heard during the telecast,
they've got the World Cup game that's playing at Arrowhead.
And there's no way since they have to share a parking lot that they're ready for something like that.
So rare day off on a Saturday.
We're back at it on Sunday and afternoon game.
Dustin May will get the ball.
Royals are injury riddle.
There are 13 games under 500 on the season.
and you cannot get swept by them,
not with your number one on the mound on Sunday.
So don't let it happen.
