Starting point is 00:00:00 Another solid day for the pitchers, but the bats continue. They continue to be stuck in hibernation so far this spring. You are locked on Cardinals, your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. Hey there, Cardinals fans. I'm J.D. Starting point is 00:00:59 You can use it in Diamond Dynasty. How cool is that? Pre-order now, available March 17th on PlayStation 5X-E-B-E-B-E-R-E-E-B. and Nintendo Switch rated to E for everyone. On today's show, we've got a bunch of pre-arbitration signings that took place and an explanation of what exactly happened with Mason Wynn. We've got not one but two games to talk about in this one, which included a rough appearance by one of the Cardinals' most important bullpen arms.
Starting point is 00:01:26 But we're going to start with what we saw on Wednesday as the Cardinals faced the Washington Nationals. And it was another day where the pitching, pretty good hitting pretty uninspiring we had a lineup that featured a lot of the people that the cardals are going to be counting on in 2026 this is a legit lineup here mason win j jay weatherhole alec burleson jordan walker no one gorman ozremyne fermein pedro pahas nathan church and the hulk himself ronio rodriguez these were your starters against the washington and nationals. And what has become an all too common theme so far here in the spring,
Starting point is 00:02:09 things did not go so well. This group of starters managed to go three for 24 on Wednesday. Three for 24. And this time you can't, before you do it, before you say it, oh, I bet it was so and so. You cannot put the blame on Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman this time around because they had two of the three hits. Mason Wend was over three. Mason, Wend was over three. saw his spring average drop down to 158. What's up with that? J.J. Weatherhalt. He walks, was hit by a pitch, goes 0 for 1, but that's now eight walks.
Starting point is 00:02:44 So far this for JJ, which is one short of the league lead, and he's got an OBP of 500 so far. So even though he was 0 for 1, he's on base two out of three times. So I'm not going to complain about that. Alec Berlison, 0 for 3 with a walk. He's down to 250. Jose for mean, 0 for 3 is. down to 143. Jose Fermin had four hits in his first ten at bats, and it was very exciting. And we were like, all right, Jose Fermin, he's getting a chance to show that, you know, he belongs
Starting point is 00:03:15 in the major leagues and that he should be playing more. He's over 18 cents. So the average has fallen way down to 143. Pahas, over two, batting average down to 11 this spring. Rodriguez over four, two strikeouts, and he grounded into a double play. when they announced the lineup, I was like, oh, man, I was like, wouldn't this would have been a good game to have on TV? Because you got to see Dustin May. And of course, JJ's in the lineup. And then you got Rodriguez.
Starting point is 00:03:45 And now I'm kind of glad that I didn't have to watch Rodriguez go 0 for 4 with two strikeouts and ground into a double play. Although I still would have liked to have seen him play because we haven't got a chance to do it very often. But either way, not a great day for him. A lot of attention is on Walker and Gorman for good reason here in 24. There are no excuses for them anymore. They are playing the positions that they are supposed to be playing.
Starting point is 00:04:09 They're not getting moved to weird spots, places that are, you know, they're not used to. These are their positions, right field and third base. They don't have any veterans standing in their way, limiting them from being able to get 500 bats, maybe even 600, if you play well. The org has back them. Their manager, Ali Marmel has backed them. Their teammates have backed them. And now the fan base is just waiting for the results.
Starting point is 00:04:44 And in this one, it was the two-out combination of Burley, Walker, and Gorman. They finally got the Cardinals on the board in the sixth inning. Burley walked on four straight. Walker ends up driving a one-one slider up the middle, gets through into center field. And then it was Gorman who turned on an O2 fastball. lined it into right field for an RBI single to tie the ball game up and one apiece. And I hate to, you know, I hate having to use like the kitty gloves when I talk about these guys. But after so much negativity that has surrounded Walker and Gorman in the last couple seasons,
Starting point is 00:05:20 you know, you're still kind of like, well, I don't want to be a total jerk every time things don't go great. and when you're looking for positives to come away with from what you've seen so far in the spring heading into this new year, that's what you got in this inning. That was a positive inning that included Walker and Gorman. So, yay, we applaud that. Now, overall, the results are still extremely underwhelming for, I would say more Walker than Gorman. like Jordan Walker is now hitting just 231 in the spring. And I know we're not supposed to get bent out over, you know, bent out of shape about stats in the spring.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Good or bad. You're supposed to just kind of stay even keel. But Jordan Walker's hitting 231. He's six for 26 with eight strikeouts and just two walks, only two RBIs and zero extra base hits. None. This is a man. who is six foot six, 250 pounds.
Starting point is 00:06:30 He's as big as Jean-Carlo Stanton, who is a massive man. The ball should be flying off of his bat even when he doesn't catch it flush on the barrel. And yet the mystery continues on why he can't put the ball in the air and do it with authority more frequently. It's an absolute mystery. Nobody can seem to figure it out. And I remember, and I'm sure you do too, is when they first brought him up that first season and he was getting base hits and the batting
Starting point is 00:07:07 average was fine, but they were like, look, we got to work on you, you know, getting the ball in the air. We need some lift, dude. We need to work on this. And I do remember at that time and I was like, well, isn't he hitting like three something right now? Like just kind of let him do his thing. You know, he's a he's a rookie. He's 20. Like, you know, we're going to mess with a swing already. and whatever has happened since then, since that season, because remember he came back and he wasn't so bad. He's actually had a pretty good rookie season. Since then, it's what, what is this? It's confusing. And we don't know why. We don't know what has happened. Like, where did things go so wrong that a man of his stature is not even hitting line drives
Starting point is 00:07:54 anymore. It's all just going into the ground. So it's a problem. It's a problem. Nolan Gorman is batting just 160 this spring. He's four for 25. But on the positive side of things with Gorman, he does have two home runs and five ribbies. And he's only struck out four times while walking three times. What was the big problem with Gorman? Way too many strikeouts, right? And as I've said before, you would take the lower batting average and the higher amount of strikeouts, as long as when he is putting the ball in play, he's doing some serious damage on those balls that he connects with. Like if he's hitting just singles like Walker, you're not going to be thrilled with the results.
Starting point is 00:08:41 But we've seen the kind of production we were hoping to see from him so far this spring. The two long flies. He's also hit a couple into the wind that should have been gone and they've been hung up. So, and he's cut down the strikeout. So I feel like Gorman is on a better path than Jordan Walker is so far this spring. The only other hit in this game was, at least starters wise, was from Nathan Church, who got the start in center field. And that ball didn't leave the end field.
Starting point is 00:09:10 So it's not like he ripped one through. The Cardle's offense has scored one run in each of its last two games. Left field continues to be a competitive spot. We're still looking for answers there. So Jacey's off at the WBC. You've seen for me and you've seen church. You've seen Nelson Velasquez get a lot of the action. Of course, Joshua Baez as well.
Starting point is 00:09:30 But we know he's going to start in Memphis has already been cut from the Major League camp to go down and he'll start at Memphis this year, which is what we thought should happen. It wasn't like when I tweeted that out, I really wasn't saying like, hey, he should be started. Like that's not what I meant. It kind of got misconstrued. But, you know, he had a heck of a spring. So I'm excited to see him continue his progression. And we'll see what he does at Memphis when the season starts.
Starting point is 00:09:56 But the other three guys, Ramin, Church, Velasquez, we can focus on those three right now. And Velasquez hit another home run in the game on Tuesday against the Mets. He now leads the Cardinals in spring with eight hits so far. He's eight for 23. He's hitting 3.48 with two home runs, three RBIs, five walks, and just two strikeouts. And if you remember, he did start off the spring kind of slow. He was two for 10, but in his last five games, he's now batting 462, going six for 13. Both his home runs have come in the last five games, just one strikeout.
Starting point is 00:10:29 So he's putting the ball in play. If he continues to do this, will it be enough for him to earn a spot despite not being on the 40-man roster, which is like the real problem here? Because like, okay, well, he's not on the 40-man. It means you've got to get somebody off the 40-man that you're willing to get rid of. of, you know, I'm sure you can find somebody in there. But, you know, is that going to be enough for them to trust him to be on the major league roster, to be a bench bat, or even the starting left fielder? Like, I don't know. We still got some time to figure that out, but the clock is ticking
Starting point is 00:11:04 because we are on March 11th and we are only 15 days away, 15 days away from opening day. We're going to talk about Dustin May's second start of the spring, which happened against Washington. That's coming your way next on Lockdown Cardinals. Hey, this is Jeff Carr from Lockdown Reds. And you know, I've reached the point in my life where my wife and I are looking toward the future. We've got the house. We've got the career. We even have an awesome dog.
Starting point is 00:11:33 But now we need to secure that future. That's where ethos comes in for us. And we're going to start with the starter. makes sense, right? Dustin May is going to get my number one start, a star of the game. And this is despite having what, you know, I would consider a, a rougher time in this game than he had in his debut, really a lot of the effort that he had to put forth in this one was in the first inning. The Cardinals top free agent acquisition kind of had a long first inning. And it started with
Starting point is 00:14:46 what is the biggest no-no. Lead-off walks. That's right. Lead off walk to Nunez, who ends up stealing second base, although the broadcast thought he was out, but, you know, there are no challenges during spring training for that kind of stuff. So safe was the call. So we remained on second base. Then Nat's Young Stud, James Wood ended up grounding out to first base to move the runner over. Then you get a double off of Burley's glove brings in the run to make it one to nothing. Tail is old as time. Lead off lock comes around to score. Next guy grounded to win at short, who tried to get the runner going to third. Again, the broadcast thought he was out. But again, no challenges. Safe was the call made it first and third with one out. May would strike out the next hitter, which was Ruiz on a heater up in the zone. Actually, out of this zone. It was way up. But that would take him to 19 pitches in the inning. So Ali came out and pulled him from the game.
Starting point is 00:15:38 Let Ian Bedell come in and finish that inning, which you did by getting a ground out from the next hitter. And I know people were freaking out on line about this when they saw that he was out of the game in the first inning. And it was all part of the plan. It's just, hey, 19 pitches. Let's get him down and get him a rest. real quick and you know, you can do that, that reentry role in spring training. So May comes back out of the second. He got the Nats, one, two, three with another strikeout. This time he did it on a change up to the lefty Mervis to win the second. And the 30 allows one out, one out walk, but
Starting point is 00:16:08 erased that on a double play. Then in the fourth, he allowed a rocket single to the leadoff hitter after he left the sinker over the heart of the plate. Lucky that one didn't go over the wall. But then he got two flyouts and another strikeout this time. He got the whiff on the sweeper. and that ended his day. Final line, three and two thirds innings, one run, two hits, two walks, three strikeouts, 61 pitches, Velo resting comfortably around 96-97, but he was also touching 98 multiple times. And most importantly, not hurt, no injury concerns after the game. So that's huge, right? Second serve, the game goes to Nathan Church, who had one of only five Cardinals hits, also stole its first base of the spring, which is great. And it sure feels like, Nathan Church is going to be the answer while Lars Newpar is out. It just feels like it makes a lot of sense. He's got, you know, the upside defensively. He's got the arm.
Starting point is 00:17:05 He's got speed. Defensively wise, he's far, far and away better than for means to J.C. And Velasquez. Plus, it's not like he has sucked with the bat. I mean, he's been fine. He's hitting 263. He's got the one home run, three RBIs, four walks, four strikeouts, It's a stolen base, does a little bit of everything.
Starting point is 00:17:23 If Newt was in there, and I told you that was Newt's numbers through this point in spring training, you'd be cool with that. You'd be more than happy. Be like, all right, Newt's on his way, not bad. So why would we think differently about Nathan Church, who's getting a nice, long look as the possible starting left fielder for the Cardinals while Lars Newt Bar is out? Third start of the game, I'm going to give this one to Gorman. We talked about this already, but it's two out. RBI single, props to Nolan Gorman for for that at bat.
Starting point is 00:17:55 I'd also like to give some love to JJ Weatherholt, who was on two more times with the walk, got hit by a pitch where we all had to, because we were worried. They had hit all right. It was the same pitcher, Covelli, and he had hit Church, and then he hit Weatherholt. And obviously, both of them are from the left side. So we're like, all right, dude, stop it. Quit hitting our left-handed hitters. But Cy of relief, everybody was fine.
Starting point is 00:18:18 They both stayed in the game. Weatherhole stole his second base of the spring in this one as well. A lot of discussion on the broadcast about where they want to hit JJ when opening day rolls around. There was an argument whether he should be first, whether he should be second. The answer is yes. Get him up there at the top of the order. Personally, I like him in the lead off spot for now because he's the one guy who isn't chasing and seems to be willing to let the game come to him and he'll walk if you,
Starting point is 00:18:49 want to walk in. He's not in a hurry. He doesn't need to swing all the time. You know, Mason win as much as we love him. And it seems like they want to get him to be the lead off guy. He just doesn't walk enough. He doesn't. And JJ's also got that power thread. You know, Mason win, sure, he could put one over the wall here and there. But JJ's got legit pop. And for him to have, you know, the good batters eye to be able to put the ball over the wall and be dangerous in that leadoff spot as well as when he does get on base, if he does walk or however he gets on is a threat to steal a bag. That's a leadoff hitter. So I am kind of on board with him batting leadoff from the get-go. So we'll see what ends up happening. Bullpen was good again
Starting point is 00:19:37 on Wednesday, at least until the merry end when Moreno gave up a couple of runs in the ninth. But Justin Brule, Matt Svonson, Ryan Fernandez, three shutout innings for those guys, each also struck out a hitter. Ryan Fernandez continues to look better and better ever since that first bad outing he had of the spring. And as far as observations from Tuesday, 6 to 1 loss against the Mets goes, you had the Velasquez home run, which is a bomb. Victor Scott won for three. Got thrown out stealing, although, again, there was no replay, but it looked safe to me. I was shocked they called them out. But the team managed just one run on three hits. There was not a lot of offense there once again. Reliever Riley O'Brien had a really rough outing,
Starting point is 00:20:18 walking forward just two thirds of an inning. Only 11 of his 27 pitches were thrown as strikes. Also through a wild pitch. Like that was a mess for Riley O'Brien, but haven't heard anything about him being hurt. So that's good. But that was just his second appearance since coming back from that cap issue that he suffered earlier in camp.
Starting point is 00:20:37 Pachy Norton continues to be a wonderful story. After being out of baseball, basically, for what, two years, has been trying to come back. And he threw another shutout inning in that. that game on Tuesday. He's now made five appearances and hasn't a lot of run, has given up just two hits, hasn't walked a single hitter, and he's got six strikeouts. Packing on. Does he make the roster? Can he be the left-handed reliever that the Cardinals are searching for? We'll find out. Cardinals announced contract agreements with 29 pre-arbitration service time players,
Starting point is 00:21:11 but there's something different about the Mason win portion of this. I'll explain what I'm talking about coming up next on Locked on Cardinals. Thrilled to be talking about our sponsor, MLB, the show, 26. It is the greatest game in baseball, and it is back with its newest installment. Also saw Willie McGee. a Willie McGee card, but he was a giant, which makes me think that, you know, that there's going to be multiple Willie McGee's in this game and there most certainly has to be one for the Cardinals, right? Right?
Starting point is 00:22:07 It's got to be. So that's going to be cool. I have never had a gamer. I got to play with Willie McGee, you know, as far as MLBee the show, at least not that I remember. So that'll be cool if you're a gamer, a baseball fan or just want to enjoy America's favorite pastime in a new, exciting way. You are going to love MLBee the show 26.

Thank you for making locked on the number one sports podcast network. Cardinals announced that they have signed 29 of their pre-arbitration service time players to contracts for the 26 season, and that shortstop Mason win has opted to have his contract renewed. Hold on. I'll explain this. The team now has all players on its 40-player major league roster under contract for the 26th season. Here are your names, Joshua Bias, Leo Bernal, Justin Brule, Nathan Church, Jimmy Crooks, Hunter Dobbins, Jose Fermine, Ryan Fernandez, Richard Fitz, Gordon Greceppo, Tinkins, Yvonne Herrera, Cooper Jerpy, Kyle Leahy, Bryson-Mawryson, Riley O'Brien, Pedro Pajas, Cesar Prieto, Matt Puschard, Nick Raquelope, Tchae, Ticoorob, Chris Roycroft, Thomas O'Reilly, Matt Sonson, Brian Torres, and Jordan Walker.
Starting point is 00:24:51 So what is the Mason win part of all of this? As explained by Derek Gould, the wonderful sports writer at STL Today.com, who covers the Cardinals for them. So if you haven't followed him on Twitter, you should do it because he's got a lot of info. Smart man. Mason Wynn, this is how he explains it. Says Mason Wynn was the only player who had his contract renewed by the Cardinals this season. And what that means is they could not agree on a salary for 2026.
Starting point is 00:25:18 And the team can impose its salary on him as a pre-arb player. He said the Cardinals use a formula to set the salaries for all the players with zero to three years of service time. That formula used to be publicly available fan graphs wore. It's changed somewhat since MLB started the bonus pool. Team runs numbers makes an offer. Most of them agree. Some players reject the offer so that when and if they go to arbitration hearings, the team cannot argue that the player agreed to that salary.
Starting point is 00:25:51 Player can argue otherwise in the past. The Cardinals imposed a penalty on renewals of $10,000 less than their initial offer. Now, what does this mean? Well, it means that they couldn't come to an agreement. And so they just kind of move forward. You have seen other teams around the league lock up their young players to long-term deals before they go to arbitration. They essentially buy out the arbitration years. And on paper, Mason Wendt appears to be a guy that maybe the Cardinals should think about trying to do that with. He and JJ Weatherhold are the two that in my eyes make the most since right now. But I don't even know if they're considering trying something like that at this
Starting point is 00:26:33 moment, considering we've got a new CBA coming in 2027 and Lord only knows what's going to happen with that because we don't know if there's going to be a lockout. We don't know if there's going to be a salary floor, a salary cap. We don't know. We don't know what the heck's going to happen with this thing. But there's going to be some fighting. Get ready for it. But so I don't know if the cardals are even thinking about that stuff yet where they're like, well, let's find out what we got going on here at the CBA. And then let's come to an agreement. Because, you know, if Mason wins offense comes around the way that most people think it will. And the first half of last season was a glimpse of what he can do when healthy.
Starting point is 00:27:10 He loses the knee last year, basically. And he's a shell of a player in the second half. Same thing kind of happened to another study. shortstop. Elie Dela Cruz with the Reds. Had this monster first half. Everything was going great, gets hurt, and can't do hardly anything that he was really good at through the entire second half. Go look at the numbers. And, you know, not having one of your two legs underneath you while you play makes life a little bit difficult. So we know he's got the glove. We always got the arm, the mentality. he's the kind of guy that just looks like he's going to be a superstar. We just need the bat to do what it did in the first half last season
Starting point is 00:27:50 and have him do that through a whole season. And then I think we'll have more people start to believe in Mason Wynn as an all-around player. But he and JJ are the guys that I would be looking at. I don't know. Is there anyone else that you guys think they need to lock up by offering something big despite not having much of a track record in the big leagues? Let me know in the comments down below. Also, this was announced.
Starting point is 00:28:12 that 12 members of the Cardinals Hall of Fame are expected to be in attendance for opening day. You know how big a deal this is. Ozzie Smith's going to be there, my man. Edgar Rinterea, Tony Larusa, Ray Langford, Ted Simmons, Vince Coleman, John Tudor, Jason is Ringhausen, Willie McGee, Mark McGuire, Alrabowski, Scott Rowland. It's quite a list there. And speaking of Willie, MLB the show, again, had him in a Giants jersey. and then as a member of the Giants for his first car, part of their card as part of their veteran series of cards.
Starting point is 00:28:48 So I can only imagine that he's going to get a Cardinals Willie McGee card for the game at some point. Kind of got hosed last year, not getting a Cardinals version of Scott Rowan. I feel like that everybody else got one like Toronto, Reds, Phillies. Cardinals didn't get one for whatever reason. So that was rude. But we got Ozzie. We got Teddy Simmons last year. McGuire and a Cardinals.
Starting point is 00:29:13 Beltrane got a Cardinals card. Larry Walker got a Cardinals card. I guess I can't complain too much. But that would be cool to see William McGee back in the game. That would be a lot of fun. So Cardinals are back at Roger Dean Stadium on Thursday to face the New York. Matt's Michael McGreevy is your scheduled starter. Thanks for making a lockdown cardinals.
