Starting point is 00:00:00 The St. Louis Cardinals claimed the right-handed hitter over the weekend, and what a disappointment it would be if he is the right-handed bad that Heim Bloom has been talking about adding this offseason. This is Locked-on Cardinals. You are Locked-on Cardinals. Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey, there, Cardinals fans.
Starting point is 00:00:28 I'm J.D. Hafer and a former national radio sports anchor, born and raised in St. Louis and a lifetime Cardinals fan, and welcome to another episode. of the Locktown Cardinals, part of the Lockedon Podcast Network. Now the number one sports podcast network. Thank you to our everydayers for always being here. Thank you to you for being here if you were new to the show. Welcome aboard. This is a show serving Cardal Nation, giving you all the info about the birds on the bat.
Starting point is 00:00:49 Today's episode brought to you by Fandall. The winter games are on and there's no better way to follow them than with a bet on Fandual. Fan Doyle, play your game. On today's show, we had a major trade involving the Milwaukee Brewers from the NL Central with our buddies up in Boston. Red Sox continued a wheel and deal. So we'll talk about that one. A couple of former Cardinals are now on the move to new homes.
Starting point is 00:01:12 One of them is actually coming back to the division. But we start today discussing the move over the weekend involving the Cardinals and their search for a right-handed hitter. On Friday, the team announced that they've claimed right-handed hitting third baseman, Brian Ramos off-webrews from the Baltimore Orioles. Now, it's about as unsexy. a move as you can make. But it's on brand for what the Cardinals have been doing this offseason. Younger players, low risk, high reward possibilities. Ramos was immediately added to the 40-man roster, which takes up the spot vacated by Brennan when he was traded last week to the Mariners.
Starting point is 00:01:50 So who the heck is Brian Ramos? And why should you care? Well, Ramos is only 23 years old. So that's good. Big guy, 6-2-25 out of Cuba, Havana. And originally signed with the White Sox as an international free agent in July of 2018. And by 2024, he was rated as the number three overall prospect in Chicago's farm system by MLB pipeline. Baseball America had him at number three and number four in back-to-back seasons. He was behind guys like Colson Montgomery and Noah Schultz, who are two of the guys that, you know, the socks are banking on to be studs for them.
Starting point is 00:02:28 So it's not like he was floating around in the mid-20s somewhere and was just kind of an afterthought. They expected him to be really, really good. Scouting report on him initially by Pipeline said that though he's aggressive and repeatedly has been young for his leagues, Ramos has shown the ability to hit the ball hard, drive it in the air throughout his pro career. His right-handed stroke has bat speed and loft and combines with his strength to create at least plus raw power, and he's able to tap into most of it. He has enough feel for the barrel to become an average two solid hitter as well if he can curb a tendency to chase pitches out of the strike zone, though that remains an issue. Now in 2022 at high A, double A, smack 22 bombs,
Starting point is 00:03:07 drove in 86 and 120 games. Great numbers, right? But those numbers have never been reached again since that point. He was good enough at AAA to get a call up to the team in 2024. In fact, he made his major league debut against the Cardinals at Bush on May 4th. He's appeared in 36 major league games thus far with Chicago over the last two seasons, has stole 80 career home runs and 560 minor league games in their system, including 16 last year at AAA Charlotte. But it is safe to say that he has not blossomed into the guy they thought he was going to be. Baseball America scouting report on him from just last year went like this.
Starting point is 00:03:47 Ramos has continually face questions about his hit tool and still whiffs plenty on breaking balls out of the zone. He struck out at a rate of just over 20% at both minor league stops, along with a 35.7% misrate against breaking balls. His swing is stiff and needs to have more impact. With too much internal rotation, he can't get his hands through the zone, and he gets jammed. His average power will play when he controls the strike zone better and draws more walks.
Starting point is 00:04:14 He's an average defender, a Debt at coming in on balls and making plays down the line with enough arm for the position. He's an average runner now, but may slow down as his body matures. You know, just a couple of seasons ago, he seemed like he was going to be the future third basement on the south side. But things changed and he got designated for assignment and sent to the Orioles for our guy cash considerations on February the 1st. There's cash looking good as always.
Starting point is 00:04:46 He's been busy this year. So basically what happened, he goes to Baltimore. They try to slip him through waivers because they don't want him on the 40 man. the Cardinals pounced on him. That's really what took place. It's not that Baltimore didn't want to keep them. They just were trying to slip them through waivers so that they could get them off the 40 men, but still have them in the organization. Cardinals probably going to do the same. You know, personally, I don't think this was the move that Haim has been chirping about when he's talking about bringing in a right-handed bat for this year's roster, whether it be through
Starting point is 00:05:25 free agency, whether it be through a trade. This, seems like a similar move to what Baltimore was trying to do, that it's going to be a depth move. And if they can keep them and he stays with the organization, it could work out. Great. If it doesn't, no big deal, no big loss. He's out of options.
Starting point is 00:05:43 So that's an issue. So most believe the Cardinals will just try to slide him through the waivers. Hope he doesn't get claimed. It's got less than three years of service time. So, and he's never been previously career in his career. He's never been outrided. so he wouldn't have the right to elect free agency if the cardals did send him back down if you were to clear waivers. But if they can hang on to him, cool, send him to Memphis, let him develop further if they can hold on to him, you know.
Starting point is 00:06:13 But for now, he's going to be on your 40 man. He's at age 23, super young still, super young. I mean, we're talking about the same age as, you know, Mason Wyn and JJ Weatherholt here. this is not some old guy. Maybe the Cardinals saw something and can help him get back on the path that had him as such a highly touted prospect just a couple of seasons ago. But it's certainly a long shot, right? Like this isn't something that I think that the Cardinals are banking on to help them in 2026.
Starting point is 00:06:45 At least I hope not. Because if that's the case, then this is a massive letdown from what the Cardinals could probably get to help them out here in 2020. Remember, they've said repeatedly the goal is not to just tank and be terrible this year. They still want to compete. They still are trying to win baseball games. They're just doing it with a younger core. And that's how they want to move forward.
Starting point is 00:07:08 I understand that. But at the same time, you have a spot here where you're looking for a right-handed bat that could add some thump to this lineup. And Ramos has not proven that he can do that whatsoever at the Major League level. So that makes me want to move forward and talk about something else. another guy. I want to go back to the name that John Denton brought up last week. And that's Philly's outfielder, Nick Castiano's. Could he be the solution for that right hand of bad that the Cardinals need or want? We'll talk about it next on Lockstone Cardinals. The winter games are officially here. And if you're anything like us, you're looking and
Starting point is 00:07:48 locking in for events that you only get to see on the biggest stage every four years. Not, you know, not the normal everyday stuff. I'm a big hockey fan. But there's all kinds of things that you can go to. And that's why following the winter games on Fandall just make sense from metal counts to individual events to finding your angle on the sports that you care most about. Fandall gives you more ways to stay connected to the action. Speed skating. Those races, you know, they're decided by inches. Those get pretty exciting. I have to say, I do enjoy it when they wipe out. I don't want anybody to get to hurt, but the way they slide, it's like Trey Turner sliding into a base or something. Team USA hockey, obviously, is going to be huge for us. The women are
Starting point is 00:08:27 going for their third gold medal, although men are trying to win gold for the first time since that 1980s miracle on ice year. But this year, we got the NHL guys who are on the roster for the first time since 2014. So hopefully they put on a good show. Curling, admit it, you love it. You can't turn it off. I'm right there with you. You've got the alpine skiing we're watching now, bobsled and luge stuff, which is insane, figure skating. I mean, it's all there. Fandle keeps the entire Olympic experience engaging from start to finish. So the winter games are on, and there's no better way to follow them than with Fandall. Fandle, play your game.

Now, it doesn't seem, at least all that to me, all that long ago, that Nick Castellanos was a big name in Major League Baseball and was tormenting the St. Louis Cardinals as a member of the Cincinnati Reds. He did it when he was with the Chicago Cubs as well. But the Reds is where most of us will remember him from. I was at that game when he scored on the wild pitch and then stood over pitcher Jake Woodford and flexed on him, which sparked to a bench's clearing situation. I've got a picture of this.
Starting point is 00:10:04 You remember this, right? You remember this, right? Very early, it was like April. It was like at the very beginning of the season, and it was a year after COVID. It was a big deal. And yes, I also recently, because people were hitting me up, I saw the tick and action surrounding the old Yadda
Starting point is 00:10:21 year, Melina Brandon Phillips, blow up another game that I was at. And in both situations, whether I'm a Cardals fan or not, and whether you like Yadi or not. This was the Reds who started the crap, okay? Phillips saying what he did about the Cardinals to the media and then coming up to the plate, tapping Yadi on the shin guards like he didn't say anything. Like that was either done on purpose or Brandon Phillips completely forgot
Starting point is 00:10:45 and it was just doing his normal routine. Didn't think about it, but come on, you know what you did. Either way, that's what started that whole brouhaha. It was not Yadi just randomly standing up to say something of Bradham Phillips. if that's not what happened. He tapped him on the shirk cards. If he hadn't done that, nothing would have happened, you know? Yanni would have sat quietly behind the plate,
Starting point is 00:11:05 and that's how it would have went. They would have just tried to get him out. That's the truth. Don't let anyone else tell you differently. Castiano's situation was done after he was plunked by Woodford earlier in the inning. The reds were up by a few runs at this point. Comes around to score in a wild pitch, and it was like a heat of the moment type of situation
Starting point is 00:11:24 where obviously if you're looking at it on video right now, I'm showing you the picture of it. very disrespectful looking like Muhammad Ali standing over Sunny Liston. Yaddi didn't like this either, nor would any catcher if a player did that to his pitcher, hence the altercation, which only Castiano's was actually thrown out for. But I remember watching it happen and I understood it all. And at the same time, I was like, it's kind of a badass move by Castianos. You know, I like a guy with a little attitude on my team,
Starting point is 00:11:55 someone who isn't necessarily a bad guy, but we'll play that village. and roll against his opponent when needed. You know, Yadi did that a lot. Wilson-Ketreus had an act for it, too. And Castiano's in his career has had that swag and attitude. And normally, he's got the stats to back it up. But things have changed a little bit.
Starting point is 00:12:12 He's in the final year of a five-year deal that he signed with the Phillies following that 20-21 season when he was a monster at the play career high 35-hole or 34 home runs, drove it 100 ribbies for CINC won his only Silver Slugger Award. He was outstanding. Since then, Despite his team being very good, despite playing in Philly in a great lineup, Casinos hasn't quite lived up to what the Phillies were hoping he'd be.
Starting point is 00:12:39 Didn't have a great year at all that first year with Philly. It was pretty down. 2022 wasn't great. But then he had two, you know, very good years, 29 and 23 home runs, RBI totals of 106 and 86. Solid stuff. But last year, the numbers fell down again to 17 home runs and 72 RBIs. Defensively, he's never been good.
Starting point is 00:12:58 ever, which made many believe that the Phillies were going to try to move on from him this year. They've made some other, you know, changes in their, in their outfield. And it just seemed like Castellanos was going to be going to be gone. Well, as of right now on Monday, he is still a member of the Philadelphia Phillies and is set to make $20 million this year. And when John Denton was on with me on Friday, you know, he brought him up. He was just like, I'll give you a name. I'll give you a name, a right-handed hitter. the Cardinals should look at, Nick Castiano's.
Starting point is 00:13:31 And the first thing that popped in my head was, wait, well, hold on a second. 33 years old, declining numbers, bad defensively and expensive. The hell would the Cardinals want to do with Nick Castellanos? Why would they want him? But John points out that if you can get somebody like Castellanos, get him for pennies on the dollar, in his walkier, which, let's be honest, guys tend to be ultra-motivated, in that final year before free agency. You could use them at D.H.
Starting point is 00:14:02 You use them in left field when, well, newts out. And you just kind of see what happens. Now, the Phillies, they could just DFA them. If they don't find a trade partner, nobody would claim them at that price of $20 million. So that would put Philly in charge of almost all the salary. And the next team would be on the hook for the pro-rated league minimum.
Starting point is 00:14:25 So it would cost virtually not. another question when considering something like this, okay, is would Castiano's really be a good fit for what the Cardinals are trying to do, which is going younger, giving more opportunity to younger guys, you know, is he the guy that they would have won as a veteran presence? We, I think all of us agree that we feel like they need a little bit of veteran presence in there to kind of help them. And I get it, the coaching staff supposed to be there for it too. But, you know, having some players on the roster as well that could lead is a good thing.
Starting point is 00:14:58 Is he the guy, though, that you would want leading that group, like setting an example for that group? I don't know the guy. People loved him in Cincinnati. I've met his parents before and they were super awesome. But is he the right personality fit for this Cardinals team? Also, keep this in mind, too, are the Cardinals willing to give him the at-bats that he would want to keep him happy
Starting point is 00:15:27 so that he can improve his worth for his upcoming free agency or to get acquired at the trade deadline by a contending team if the Cardinals decide to flip him or aren't good enough to make the playoffs. My gut says no. My gut says no. But I thought I'd revisit it just because John and I very briefly got a chance to talk about it due to the time constraints
Starting point is 00:15:52 we had on last week's show. I still like Randall Gritchick for the money. for my money, that's who I want to roll with. I like Randall Gritchick. Then in St. Louis before, I'm not sure if he wants to come back to St. Louis or is looking for a better opportunity someplace that would give him more at bats. Because that's situation. You've got to find somebody who's cool with platooting because that's what it's going to be.
Starting point is 00:16:17 They're going to want Jordan Walker to play every day. You're going to want to have Victor Scott in there 85% of the time. Left field with Newt. Newt can obviously move around all. three positions, but he's hurt right now. So you need somebody who can platoon when he gets back and is okay with that. And that's probably a tough pill to swallow for some of the veterans. But some of them get it. And maybe Randall gets it. I don't know. But he fits what they're looking for, where it's a right-handed bad ability to play all three outfield spots. I think he can play
Starting point is 00:16:49 center field still. I have no idea. But it just kind of makes sense on the cardinal side for sure. I don't know if it makes sense for Randall Gritchick, if maybe he doesn't want to be a part of a rebuild, but I don't know what the money is that he's asking for, nothing like that. But let me know in the comments section as far as the Castiano's move. Like if you don't have to pay him hardly anything, and you're just getting him from the Phillies for very, very little,
Starting point is 00:17:17 whether it's our guy cash considerations, whether it's for a lower minor league guy, would you be cool with a trade that had Nick Castiano's coming to St. Louis? Just for fun, we're talking about it. I don't think it's going to happen. I think it does it. I don't think that's something that the Cardinals are going to do. But say you're in the GM chair, Heinblum, you get to play his role.
Starting point is 00:17:43 Phillies call you. They go, hey, Castiano's to you for almost nothing. What do you say? We're at the risk or stupid and unnecessary. Let me know. Cardinals are on the move. Each were involved in trades that completely backfired on St. Louis, plus a big trade that involved the Brewers and Boston Red Sox. We'll get to all of that coming up next. Starting point is 00:19:29 Thanks again for making lockdown, Cardinals, your first listen of the day. Thank you for making lockdown on the number one sports podcast and network. Now, when I say the names, Marcelo Zuna and Eric Fetty, some Cardinals fans might feel a cold shiver down their spine. I don't blame you because those are two of the guys that the team and fans had high hopes for at one point or another. And neither of them panned out the way that any of us wanted it to. I remember the day the Marcelo Zuna trade went down. I was in my kitchen and it happened.
Starting point is 00:20:04 And I was like, oh, no way. Coming off that monster year in Miami. And at first, when you look at it, I was like, oh, oh, okay. Well, we gave up some prospects there. But hey, you got to give to get, right? 2017, in exchange for FutureSai Young Award winner, Sandy Alcantra and FutureSaiy, candidate and All-Star Zach Gallant, amongst other pieces that were involved.
Starting point is 00:20:29 But those were the two big names. Ozuna comes to St. Louis. We're all excited for it. We're like, all right, now we got that masher in the middle, and that is not what we got. Instead, over two seasons, he had an average of 262, an average 262, an average 26 home runs and 88 RBIs with an OPS plus of 107. Respectable numbers, okay? They're not trash, but it's not even close.
Starting point is 00:20:57 to what the Cardinals thought that they were getting after he hit 312 and 37 bombs and 127 RBIs for the Marlins. Okay. That's who they thought they were getting. And instead they got a guy who was just a tick above league average, which is not what you were trading for. It is a trade that is continuously looked back at as one of the worst deals that John Moseilac ever made, just because of what Alcantan and Gallant ended up being for them. And what did the Cardinals have a problem with over the last few years?
Starting point is 00:21:27 They didn't have enough pitching. And they traded and they had too many off-fielders at one point. Like it just went bad. Okay. And to throw salt on the wound, after OZuna's two seasons, the, the, the, n-type of seasons that he had with the Cardinals, he goes on to the Atlanta Braves and has three huge seasons with them. He was just a monster during the COVID season of 2020,
Starting point is 00:21:52 which whatever, but he still was a monster. And then he also had two seasons where he, he hit 39 and 40 home runs. You added a silver slugger. He added another all-star appearance. Like those were the numbers that the Cardinals thought that they were getting. And it just did not happen while he was in St. Louis. And then you got Eric Fetty, who was acquired at the trade deadline in 2024,
Starting point is 00:22:14 part of that three-team deal that included the White Sox and the Dodgers, where the Cardinals got Fetty and Tommy Fam. And my boy, cash considerations. There he is. they get those guys and the White Sox got, you know, a bunch prospects from the Dodgers. The Dodgers ended up getting reliever Michael Kopeck from Chicago and then Tommy Edmund and prospect Oliver Gonzalez from the Cardinals. And I remember when it happened and we're like, oh, okay, all right.
Starting point is 00:22:43 Never because Edmund was out the whole year. Had the risk problem, which they didn't think it was a big deal on the offseason and that ended up being completely wrong. And he was out all year, had never made an appearance with the Carlin. Cardinals yet was, I think he was going to be a free agent, wasn't he? Coming up after that, but either way, they make this trade and we're like, oh, gosh, that sucks. So, you know, fans used to be one of our guys, but Fetty, did we believe in this? Tommy Edmonds are dude.
Starting point is 00:23:14 We all loved him. Tommy two backs. You know, Tommy fan was, he was good and fun for a couple of games. Remember Grand Slam in that first played appearance, which was super awesome. but would ultimately come crashing back to Earth, hits 206 and 23 games, and that's 7.7. That's right. 0.077 in his final 15 games with the Cardinals before they were like, all right, we're out of here. Released him. He latches on with the Royals goes to the postseason with them.
Starting point is 00:23:42 Eric Fetty would go 5 and 15 with an ERA of 4.6.9 and 30 starts with the Cardinals before getting traded to the Braves for future considerations, not cash, but future considerations last year. Meanwhile, we know the story with Edmund, right? He goes on to start for the Dodgers in the playoffs. When's the 2024 NLCS MVP. He's got two World Series rings now as a key cog for what the Dodgers are doing. They absolutely love them. Both OZuna and Fetty, the point of this is both OZona and Fetty have signed deals with other teams for the upcoming season.
Starting point is 00:24:16 Marcel O'una coming back to the NL Central, headed to the Pittsburgh Pirates on a one-year $12 million deal after hitting $232 with. 21 home runs and 68 RBIs as a D.H in Atlanta. The club has not confirmed the deal or at least hadn't when I started doing this episode, which includes a $16 million mutual option for 2027 and a $1.5 million buyout, according to Mark Feinstand. Fetty's going back to the White Sox on a one-year deal. I did not see details on it. I don't know how much money he's going to make, but, yeah, he's going back to Chicago.
Starting point is 00:24:48 I thought maybe he'd have to go back overseas again. But the White Sox are like, ah, come on. Well, we'll take you on again. We'll see what we got. Maybe we can fix you again. But anyway, solid move for the pirates who have added a lot of names this offseason. And, you know, it's a low risk move for Chicago. But the big news are not those moves.
Starting point is 00:25:05 Maybe those are the big news moves to us in St. Louis. But the big news as far as MLB overall was the trade between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Boston Red Sox. If you hadn't heard yet, trade details, I got them for you, Red Sox received. Rookie of the year finalist, infielder Caleb Durbin. infielder Andrew Monasterio, infielder Anthony Siegler, and competitive balance round B draft pick. Brewers are getting left-hand of pitcher Kyle Harrison,
Starting point is 00:25:34 infielder David Hamilton, and prospect Shane's Rohan. Durbin, here's the thing. When Durbin's a tiny guy, he's 5'7, and I remember talking with Chuck Freeman from Locked-on Brewers after the trade went down between them and the Mets for Freddie Peralta, and I was like, oh, you guys got Jet Williams. That's a big deal. And he's like, he's another little middle infielder.
Starting point is 00:25:57 We got a ton of these guys. Well, that made Durbin expendable after they got Jet Williams, who I'm sure they would like to see in the major leagues this year. So they move him and use that to get Kyle Harrison, be like, hey, dangling a rookie of the year finalist here. What about Kyle Harrison? Remember him, he was a big time pitching prospect with the Giants, It was a big part of the trade with Red Sox and had Rafael Devers going from Boston to San Francisco.
Starting point is 00:26:27 Kyle Harrison was a big name involved in that trade. So Brewer's got another solid pitching prospect. I know that Harrison hasn't quite developed the way they thought he would right away, but you've seen what Milwaukee can do with their pitchers and guys say, hey, you guys don't think he's very good? Well, wait until we get our hands on him. And hello Quinn Priester just this past year. Nobody thought he was going to be doing much, also acquired from Boston. And they turned them into a hell of a pitcher last year.
Starting point is 00:27:01 So maybe they can do the same for Harrison. I wouldn't put it past them. The Brewers have been doing some good things when it comes to smart moves, intelligent moves, and being able to develop people. And I think it's another move that the Brewers will end up turning out to be a good one for them as they try to stay at the top of the NL Central. Maybe Durbin, you know, out kicked his coverage a little bit this year. Maybe he's not quite as good as maybe his number said he was this year,
Starting point is 00:27:29 but the Red Sox won him. And now the Brewers get another solid pitching prospect in return. So it's going to be a lot of competition in the NL Central this year for the Crown. Everyone not named the Cardinals has really got a shot at winning the division this year. Sadly, Cardinals aren't really trying to improve their team. for 26. It's all about the future. We know this. We've accepted it, but it is kind of a bummer to watch the other teams moving around and trying to win things this year. And we're just kind of sitting there in the corner like, oh, that used to be us. I remember these days. We'll get it back.
