Starting point is 00:00:00 The St. Louis Cardinals opened up their series in Milwaukee and immediately fell into the trap that is Milwaukee Brewers baseball and got dominated by their impressive new ace, Jacob Nisorowski. This is Locked on Cardinals. You are Locked on Cardinals. Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on Podcasts network, your team every day. Hey there, Cardinals fans. I'm J.D. Hafford and on today's show, we're going to get you the latest updates on a lot of the injured guys. like the Lars New Bar. We'll talk about the NL Central. We're going to discuss Bryce and Mott's MLB debut.
Starting point is 00:00:40 But let's begin with the Cardinals lost to the Brewers on Monday. And everything I'm about to tell you is easier said than done. It's real easy for me to sit here on this side of a computer and tell you exactly what you can and can't do when playing the Milwaukee Brewers that will lead to either success or failure against them. they don't hit a lot of home runs. They are bottom five in slugging. Their bottom half of the league in OPS.
Starting point is 00:01:09 That's not their game. But what they do well makes those numbers kind of irrelevant. They play a different brand of baseball, and it's a successful brand of baseball in Milwaukee. Their top 10 in runs scored. Their top 10 in RBIs. Their top two in stolen bases. Their top 10 in batting average.
Starting point is 00:01:30 They're top two in OBP. Top five in walks, top five in not striking out. They are a contact team that will take the extra base on you at every turn. They will run on you. They play good defense and they don't make a lot of mistakes. They are like Iceman in the original Top Gun. Let's go back to 1986. When they describe why Iceman is one of the best,
Starting point is 00:02:01 The quote is, it's the way he flies. Ice cold, no mistakes, just wears you down. You get bored and frustrated, do something stupid, and he's got you. That is the Milwaukee Brewers to a tee. This is what they do. You combine that with their pitching staff, which continues to just churn out winners over and over. and that's how you have the makings of a very solid baseball team and a very solid organization that's been one of the best teams in baseball the last few seasons during the regular season, obviously. If I had Chuck from Locked on Brewers here, I would tell him all of this stuff and give him all these flowers and he would say, yeah, but we suck in the playoffs, so it doesn't mean anything.
Starting point is 00:02:48 They're frustrated. But this brand of baseball that they do during the regular season, it works a lot. and they have not been able to find that same success in the postseason, but who cares? We're not there right now. This is still May. We're talking about what's happening with this team on May the 26th now. We're talking about this series. And, you know, you make mistakes and the Brewers are going to capitalize.
Starting point is 00:03:15 It's something the Cardinals have done a lot of this year. That's how they've won a lot of ball games. Other teams make mistakes. The Cardinals have been able to jump on them and take advantage. That's what the Brewers have. Brewers do all the time. And the Cardinals and their starter, Matthew Libertore on Monday, fell right into the Brewer's trap in the very first inning. Three mistakes. Three mistakes made within the first four batters of this game led to a three to nothing deficit.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Mistake number one, what is the golden rule for pitchers? If this was a class and you were here with me, we would say it together. Don't walk the lead-off man. Now against free swinging slugger type teams, you might be able to get away with it more because of their propensity to swing and miss and strike out. You do it against the Brewers and you are asking for trouble. And off the top of my head,
Starting point is 00:04:11 I can think of two situations in this game where the Cardinals pitchers walked the leadoff guy and they gave up runs because of it. And the very first center of this game, Livy walks him. Gets up one, two on Jackson Churio. Fine baseball player, has superstar written all over him. Goes up one, two, and then throws three straight uncompetitive pitches and walks him.
Starting point is 00:04:35 The Brewers don't chase that crap. So he takes his little trot down to first base. Next hitter is one of my favorite players in the league. I love him. Bryce Terang, a lot of respect for him. Libby falls behind him three and one, but comes back to strike him out. Very impressive. You love that.
Starting point is 00:04:57 That brings in William Contreras, Wilson's brother. And that leads us to mistake number two. On a one-one count, Jackson Churio, still on first base at this point, breaks early for second base. Cardinals pick him off. He tried to time Libby's leg kick, tried to read something against him, and they pick him off. But with me, Mason win playing more towards third base. Can't really get to second base in time.
Starting point is 00:05:25 Burley's got to kind of double clutch it, not only because nobody was at second base, but also he's trying to make sure he doesn't hit Truro in the back with the throw, which is a difficult throw. We remember, you know, Wilson-Kutcheris. He's a struggle with this throwing down to second because that runner is right there. So how do you get it around him? You know, I get it.
Starting point is 00:05:46 And because of those two things where Mason can't get there in time, Burley can't find a clean lane to throw it in. Truro beats it out and gets second base. Initially called out, which was a hilariously bad call, but it was reviewed, overturned rather quickly, as it should have been. Another note on this play, according to Jeff Jones, Ali said that after the game,
Starting point is 00:06:08 the second base umpire was positioned to oddly and blocked win on this play, which is why he was late getting to the bag, had to go around him to get there when asked him afterwards to, you know, cool if you position yourself differently, umpire, I said, yeah, yeah, I got you. But again, you had him picked off. You failed to execute it. and it puts a runner in scoring position instead of sitting on the bench with two outs.
Starting point is 00:06:31 And like clockwork, the next pitch, Contreras hits one weekly through the hole between short and third, makes it one to nothing, walk, stolen base, single, Brewer's baseball. That's it. That's how they do it. And that brings us up to mistake number. Number three. Next up is Christian Yellich. Hitting a whopping 207 against lefties this season. He has been injured a lot so the numbers are a little skewed because small sample size, but Libby gets ahead of him, one two, can't put him away, hangs a two-two slider right down the middle. Yelich says, thank you, sends it over the one left field, two run bomb, four batters into the game. You are down three to nothing. Three mistakes within the first four hitters of the game against a team that you cannot make mistakes against because they will take advantage of it and beat you. Now Libby,
Starting point is 00:07:27 granted, would go on to pitch quite well. He did. Set a new career high in strikeouts. Had 10 of them in this game. But the damage was done. And we know that this Cardinals team has been excellent at coming back. In no world that I was, was I like, well, this game's over after the first inning. But when the opponent has a guy standing on the mound, named Jacob Mizorowski. A 3-0-0-0 kind of feels like 9-0, the way he's been throwing. And the Miz had his A-game going.
Starting point is 00:07:59 And boy, oh, boy, was he impressive? Unreal. We're going to talk about him and everything else that went on with this game coming up next on Locked on Cardinals. Workplace chaos, deadline, sack it up, inbox overflowing in the one position you still got to fill. It's sitting open, boys and girls. When the pressure's on and you need the right higher,

All right, Jacob Mizorowski.
Starting point is 00:09:58 Who, holy crap. I mean, what do you do against this guy? What do you do? He's on some kind of a heater right now. Heat being the optimal word because all this dude does is bring smoke, unlike any other starter in the league. Six foot seven. He's 24 years old. A Missouri native went to Crowder College, a college I went to for like two seconds. I had a baseball scholarship there, moved there, was there for about two weeks. It was like, yeah, this isn't exactly where I want to live and got out of there. But not a day goes by that I don't think and wonder, like, what if I had stayed in New Yosho, Missouri at Crowder College?
Starting point is 00:10:40 Where would my life be right now? But Jacob Mizorowski clearly had some success there and got drafted in the second. and round. And I posted this on, on X. And this was not a knock at the Cardinals, but I pointed out that Bryson Mott's, who was set to make his debut on Sunday, but instead I had to make it on Monday, was taking four picks ahead of Jacob Miz Rowski. And boy, oh boy, people got on my blood about that. Like, so what? This stuff happens all the time. I wasn't knocking the Cardinals. I just happened to look. I was like, where did Bryce and Mons get taken? And I happened to look at the draft. And then four names later, there he is, the Ms.
Starting point is 00:11:18 with all them lettuce. So I was just pointing it out. I wasn't saying that the Cardinals screwed the pooch and made some huge mistake. I know what happens. Like drafts are tough. I get it. But anyway, this guy, Mizorowski, hadn't given up a run through four starts in the month of May coming into this game. Unbelievable. Four starts in May had a Blutarski, GPA-worthy ERA of 0.00. Over 24 and a third innings, 37Ks, only five walks, only nine hits against So to sit here and tell you that the Cardinals should beat this guy, it's a bit silly. I mean, you're going to go out there and give him your best shot, but this guy's carving up everybody right now. It's a stark contrast to what his first six starts were, where he was one and two.
Starting point is 00:12:04 The team was only two and four in his first six starts. ERA was at 3.31, which isn't bad by any means, but not like where he is now. But that was over 32 and two-thirds innings. He had allowed 12 runs, 23 hits. He gave up four home runs, 13 walks, five hit batters. He had 51 strikeouts still. But clearly control was an issue for the Mizz in the early parts of this season. And whatever adjustments he's made, they are working in a major way.
Starting point is 00:12:34 And the Cardinals just happen to be the next team on the list. Now, my hope was that the offense, you know, the game plan in my eyes was like, well, you stay patient against him. you try to make him come to you. Don't chase, force longer counts, try to get him out of the game sooner rather than later just by pitch count. And the first hitter of the game actually executed that plan very, very well, brilliantly done by JJ Weatherholt,
Starting point is 00:13:01 who saw a six pitch walk and we're like, all right, here we go. But after that, it was like a warm knife cutting through a stick of butter, man. Cardinal sitters would fall behind and then they would chase the high heat. or Ms would break off a slider or a curve ball. Like what a jerk, right? Like honestly, I don't, honestly, I don't know how anyone hits this dude. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:13:24 How do you hit this guy after seeing what we saw on Monday? He's unbelievable. And like I said, it's very easy for me to sit here and say, hey, don't swing at that. I can't believe you're swinging the pitches up in your eyes and out of the zone. But I'm not the one staring down 103 miles an hour from 60 feet, six inches. You know, like it's real easy. for us to go, I can't believe you guys are chasing it. I mean, come on. That's crazy.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Like Brad Thompson said on the teleguas, he's like, you know, when a guy's throwing that hard, it just looks like an aspirin coming in at you. And as if the fastballs aren't hard enough to hit when he's throwing 103, then he breaks off those 95 mile an hour sliders or a 90-an-hour curve ball, which has got you all jacked up because you got to get out on your front foot to try to catch up with the fastball. I mean, it's filthy, absolutely filthy. What we saw from the Ms. on Monday. Hit 103 or more eight times in the first inning. Cool. Hit triple digits, 57 times in this game, 10 more than the previous record, which was held by Hunter Green from the Reds, for the most 100-plus mile per hour pitches in a game during the pitch tracking era. He also tied his career high with 12
Starting point is 00:14:40 strikeouts to become the first pitcher in Major League Baseball to reach the century mark this season. And he's done it in just 11 starts. And I know Shohei Otani is amazing as he is, and he's having this outstanding season on the mound for L.A. He's got an ERA of 0.73 through 8 starts. But Ms. is by far the most dominant pitcher I have seen, at least on Monday, since Randy Johnson, where his stuff is virtually unhittable. like you take what Mason Miller is doing as a closer with the Padres right now and how incredible he's been this year. And you stretch that out over six innings each game instead.
Starting point is 00:15:22 And that is what the Miz is doing right now. It's insane. He's got a 14.06 strikeouts per nine going right now, which would eclipse Randy Johnson's record for starters from 2001 when he was in Arizona. And he had 13.46 case per nine. like Ms is topping that at the moment. And that's coming off of the first six starts of the season where things weren't going quite the way they wanted it to.
Starting point is 00:15:51 He's been incredible. Didn't allow a hit till the sixth inning when Pedro Pah has hit an absolute missile in the right field. 65.3 miles per hour. Okay, dying quail that found grass. J.J. Weatherholt would also single in that inning to make it first and third with one out. Victor Scott had hit a ground ball and Pahas was out at second,
Starting point is 00:16:13 but Victor goes from first to third on the base hit by JJ. That brings in Ivan Herrera, who topped one ever so softly down the third baseline impossible to turn to. They get the out of first, but the run scores, which was the first run that has been scored upon Jacob Mizorowski in the month of May. Five starts. And that was the first run. And here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:16:38 Like at this point, it cut the lead to three to one. So the Cardinals had the tying run up at the plate, but they wouldn't get any closer. So he gets out of it, giving up just to one run. They wouldn't get any closer than that. Bryce and Mottes would come on to make his major league debut. And it really was unfortunate that it went down this way. Because he's a starter and he had to come in and relief in his major league debut.
Starting point is 00:17:06 So he's not, you know, he's supposed to start on Sunday. mother nature said uh-uh so now he has to come in as a relief pitcher something he doesn't normally do and instead of the reds he's got to face the brewers who are a more formidable offense as far as like putting the ball and play and stuff so um and the brewers do the normal brewer stuff against him as as soon as he gets in there uh lead off single then a wild pitch then a walk then a fly out moves the run to the third followed by a lazy single to left center which victor almost caught just like that it's four to one. Dull, boring Brewer's baseball, but it gets the job done. He then allowed to lead off walk, followed by a single and a double in the seventh inning. That makes it five to one,
Starting point is 00:17:49 but just really a tough spot for for Bryce and bonds. I felt bad for him, you know, to make your debut in that kind of a game, you know, so people who, you know, you see the trolls online and they're like, ah, another, another wasted guy, another prospect, not living up to expectations. is like, shut up. Come on. Come on. I'm not getting bent out of shape over this. Like, I saw some good. I saw some rookie mistakes. I also saw a starter who was relieving. So three innings, two runs, four hits, two walks, two wild pitches, two strikeouts.
Starting point is 00:18:27 I'm sure there's plenty of nerves going on in there as well. He's going to be sent back to Memphis on Tuesday so that Ryan Fernandez can officially rejoin the bullpen. But, you know, the good thing is is that the cartels didn't have to use any of their normal bullpen guys. Like after Libby came out, it was just Libby and Mauts. So they've got a fully stocked bullpen ready to rock and roll for the next two games of this series. So we appreciate that, Bryce and Moths. Thank you very much.
Starting point is 00:18:55 Coming out, the latest on injured guys like Lars Neupar, Nathan Church, Ramonurius. We've got the NL Central standings to talk about. I'll give you a preview of Tuesday night's game as well, where the Cardinals will face yet another really good pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers. So a guy that they absolutely stole from the Boston Red Sox. So we'll get a doll of that coming up next on Lockdown Cardinals. If you've got a sweet tooth like I do, you know how tough it is to find that perfect treat without all the sugar, right? You want it. You want the sweet stuff.
Starting point is 00:19:32 Like, I love donuts. You know, I want that. but bad, not good for you. And that's why cotton candy five hour energy shot is one of my go-to flavors when it comes to any of the five-hour energy shots because it's got that classic cotton candy taste that you and I remember it's got the tasty caffeine boost, which is great, but zero sugar, which is perfect, quick, easy way to satisfy any sweet craving you might have
Starting point is 00:19:58 while keeping being simple and on the go. And you remember getting cotton candy as a kid at Bush Stadium growing up, right? You were young, but you can't eat all them sweets. anymore, right? As an adult, you got to wean off that stuff, and that's why this is a perfect alternative. I love how convenient they are. They're small. They're portable shots. I can grab whenever I need a little pick-me-up before work or the gym or, you know, late night watching the Cardinals if they're out on the West Coast or something or an extra inning game. It's perfect. It's great. It's become my go-to when I want something sweet without going overboard, but also need a boost.
Starting point is 00:20:29 So bring all the sweetness with cotton candy, five-hour energy shots available online right now at five-hournernerner or on Amazon. Thanks for making lots on Cardinals. First listen of the day. And thank you for making it locked on the E, number one sports podcast network. All right, Lars Newport continues to get closer. He's inching his way back to being member of our St. Louis Cardinals. There's the brighter days of Lars smiling while playing ball with Cardinals.
Starting point is 00:21:00 Her Derek Gould at SCL Today.com, he will continue his rehab assignment. And it's actually going to be relocating this week to Class AA Springfield. It's not a setback. It's not a demotion or anything like that. It just makes more sense geographically. He spent the last week with AAA Memphis and four games, three for 12, home run, two ribbies. He always struck out once. But he's approaching the final full week of his rehab schedule.
Starting point is 00:21:24 And the shift Springfield means he'll be at home with them. They're going to be in Springfield this week. And so he's just to drive away from being able to reach St. Louis. And that way he can be evaluated during this upcoming homestand if the Cardinals decided, hey, it's time. You're ready to go. Let's activate him. So we might be seeing Lars Neupar back here, you know, maybe this weekend for the Cubs series.
Starting point is 00:21:47 Also, according to Gould, Ramon Urius, dealing with that tennis elbow, started taking dry swings in the batting cage and doing other workouts with his arm. They say he's nearing the start of a formal throwing program, though the pain that he was dealing with and that elbow is more while swinging in the bat than making throws. But once he begins facing the pitching machine and tests out that elbow has recovered, Cardinals will have a better time. table on his return. Nathan Church got that shoulder sprain. He's going to be re-evaluated on Tuesday before establishing a schedule for his recovery and return. So those are the big injury guys that we're worried about. So it looks like Newt's the closest one to coming back. It would be nice to see him back on the team, right? It'll be unfortunate because it means Brian Torres is probably going to have to go down. I've enjoyed watching Torres at the plate
Starting point is 00:22:32 so far in the first few games we've gotten a chance to watch him. But it's a lot of his new part, man. He's pretty good. So with the loss on Monday, Cardle's fall, two and a half back in Milwaukee, third place Cubs lost again, this time to the pirates, two to one. They now drop nine in a row. Reds beat up on Nolan McLean in the in the Mets, seven to two. They're now four back in the division. Pittsburgh with the win over the Cubs, they're four and a half back. So NL Central Central is still super tight and people are going to be shuffling back and forth as we go. I just hope the Cubs stay ice cold by the time they get to Bush Stadium this coming a weekend. I do not need them to start turning things around and starting to look like the Cubs again
Starting point is 00:23:15 when the Cardinals have to play them. So hopefully just just stay cold. Stay cold. Cardinals are going to have their hands full again on Tuesday night. Brewers are going to send Kyle Harrison to the hill against Michael McGreevy. Now Harrison was a top prospect with San Francisco Giants. Okay. And he got traded to the Boston Red Sox.
Starting point is 00:23:36 It was part of that massive deal for Raphael Devers, who then shipped him to Milwaukee in the deal that included Caleb Durbin and Andrew Monasterio, a move that has completely failed for Boston. Durbin's a Washu alum, in case you weren't aware, has been a massive disappointment this year. He's hitting just 163 OPS plus a 39. Monasterio has actually been the better player, but still only has an OPS plus of 98 combined.
Starting point is 00:24:08 They have two home runs between the two. It's bad. It's been bad. It's been an awful trade because meanwhile, the left-handed pitching Harrison is five and one with an area of 1.77 with the Brewers. Hasn't a lot more than two runs in any start yet this season. And he's coming off back-to-back shutout performances, which included seven innings and 11-Ks against the Cubs his last time out.
Starting point is 00:24:31 So he's coming in hot. And the funny thing is, Ritees, because you would think, hey, let's put a bunch of Ritees in against them. Ritees, you're only hitting 195 against Harrison this year. Lefties at 256. I'd still expect to see Jose Fermin and Thomas Sucy. Wouldn't shock me if both of them are in the lineup with, you know, Gorman VHing or something. I'm sure they'll figure it out. Maybe Gorman gets to see.
Starting point is 00:24:55 I don't know. But it wouldn't shock me to see Fremine and Sijisi or at least one of them in the lineup in left field. on Tuesday. Michael McGreevy will go for the Cardinals. Just came off one of his tougher outings of the year against Pittsburgh. So, you know, he's going to be itching to get back on the mound and, you know, be more of the guy that we've seen for most of the year. Ten hits, I think, against them in that last one, three-earned runs, which isn't a ton,
Starting point is 00:25:21 but just a lot of traffic on the bases. But the Brewers, you know, they're that contact team. So it might be a bad matchup for McGreevy. So we'll see how it all plays out. 640 first pitch, St. Louis time. Thanks for making a lockdown Cardinals. First listen every day if you haven't already.
