Holy smokes.
Holy smokes.
My dog is freaking out over here.
She's like, I can't believe what just happened.
What a display by the offense on Sunday in New York?
Cardinals fans everywhere had to.
feel pretty darn good about what we saw.
I mean, my goodness, 14 runs, 21 hits, three home runs.
Beautiful.
M-h-h-huffe-chests.
Maybe a little too little too late in the grand scheme of things for the season,
but still pretty darn cool to watch it.
I think my favorite part about what happened on Sunday
was watching this offense go nuclear,
not only on a future playoff team like the Yankees,
in their own house, in New York,
but that a lot of the damage was done by guys considered to be the future of this franchise.
And they were front and center and all of it, specifically Jordan Walker, who I don't want to say this was a coming out party because he was really good last year too.
Remember the second half.
We tend to forget that just because he hasn't been up this year, hardly at all, that he wasn't around last year.
He didn't hit 276 with 16 home runs and 51 RBIs last year.
It seems like it never happened because we haven't seen him do anything for the Cardinals this year.
But it did.
And now that the Cardinals have committed to him to not only have him on the roster,
the rest of the year, but also to play him every day,
that it might have injected a little bit of confidence in this guy
in what is supposed to be the crown jewel prospect in your organization.
As great as Mason win has been this year.
He was not supposed to be the.
the guy. It was supposed to be Jordan Walker this whole time. This is a guy that last year was at the top of a lot of people's prospect list, specifically on the hitting side, maybe not number one overall in all of baseball. Paul Skeens, obviously, was that guy. But as far as offensive players went, Jordan Walker was up there at the top of the list for a lot of people. And not just for the Cardinals, but like I said, all of Major League Baseball, sure fire, can't miss prospect. And they did the stupid Cardinals yo-yo thing.
with him. They had him up on opening day, even though I thought that was a mistake.
Without any time in AAA, he hits 274, which is not bad, but they don't like that he's hitting the
ball on the ground so much. They want him to hit for more power. They want him to work on his launch
angle. He had two home runs in 20 games, so they're like, get out of your kid, go fix your launch
angle. I was hitting 353 on balls in play, which is a crazy unsustainable batting average.
but he was getting on base.
He was doing it, but they wanted him to go work on some things.
So they sent him down, brought him back up in June,
where he hits 277 the rest of the way,
pops 14 home runs,
slugging goes from 397 in the first stint to 455.
So there was an improvement,
but I still wonder if that had anything to do with him getting sent down.
Or maybe just maybe, you know, he's a rookie that is still trying to
figure things out, you know, at the major league level. You just brought him up straight from
AA. He's just a kid. He was in high school a couple years ago. And, you know, I don't know if the
improvements came from him being sitting down is what I'm trying to say. Like, if it's from some technique
or something that he learned while he was at Memphis, or he just got used to what he was seeing. And as
the competition he was going up against improved, he had to make adjustments and improve himself.
You know, using that one month as a barometer on whether or not he was going to be any good the rest of the season.
I don't know if that was the smart thing.
I remember we were all kind of in shock when they were like Jordan Walker's been sent down.
You're like, what, what happened?
Like, is he not allowed to learn?
You know, a lot of these teams around baseball, they're putting in rookies and they're letting them learn and make mistakes at the major league level to become a better hitter over Raw.
Cardinals didn't do that.
They were like, nah, why don't you go work on it in Memphis?
And then they'd bring him back up.
And he was much better, sure.
But, you know, this is a guy that has hit everywhere he's been.
It is entire life.
So maybe just getting used to major league hitting or major league pitching is something that you let him do.
So he can learn to hit the ball harder and farther against that level of pitching,
that level of competition.
You know, the odds that he was going to be just a singles hitter.
out of nowhere, probably pretty slim, probably pretty slim. So to see him get the call back up
this week and obviously was awesome, not as a frigging platoon player, but as your starting right
fielder, no matter what and have him do what he did on Sunday. It was awesome. Five for five,
two run home run, knocks in three, scores four times, has a stolen base as well. Yeah,
he looked a little on that fly ball in the second inning. But that's the tradeoff. That's the tradeoff.
That's the trade-off with the offensive capabilities.
He's not going to look like Jim Edmonds tracking down balls in the outfield,
at least not right now and probably never.
Jim Edmonds and some of the guys the Cardinals have had in the outfield like a Harrison
Vader, like a Michael Ciani and a Victor Scott right now.
They're just at another level defensively.
And again, this is a guy who just started learning the outfield two years ago.
We've seen him make plenty of diving catches where he uses that monstrous six-foot-six frame
to snag one of those sinking liners.
And we know that people already respect the cannon of an arm that he's got out there in
right field.
You saw it in the series when they weren't willing to even attempt to take extra bases on
anything that was hit out to Jordan.
But that's part of the growing pains of a young player.
It's going to happen.
And you've got to be okay with that so that he can learn and he can grow.
You just can't pull the rug out from underneath them and crush his confidence by
venting him or shipping him back down to the miners.
Like I don't, the Nolan Gorman situation where he wasn't even putting the ball in play.
That's different.
All right.
He was a cluster F going on there.
Like it was bad.
Everything about him just looked broken.
And it was time for him to go down to Memphis and work on things there each and every day.
Well, the Cardinals didn't have a spot for him anymore.
They were like, look, we're going to start Donovan at second a lot more.
We've got, you know, they've got more options now.
So it was better, in my opinion, for Gorman to go down.
The situation with Walker, they just chose not to play him every day for whatever reason that they thought it was better for him to face lefties instead of righties.
Whatever.
I was just thrilled for him.
I thought it was cool.
And I was so happy for him to have a day like that, happy for the family.
And I hope that this is just the beginning of what should be a long and fruitful career in the big leagues and hopefully for the St. Louis Cardinals.
So we're going to talk more about the game itself.
because there was a lot to unpack.
Plus a recap of the series as a whole
where the Cardinals, you know, they're still there.
They still got their head above water
in the wildcar picture with a month to go.
This is Locked on Cardinals.

So the Cardinals hadn't won in New York against the Yankees since like,
it was like when the dinosaurs were around.
It was in the 60s, which was crazy to hear that.
Friday night was kind of a tough loss after grabbing the lead early on.
And despite holding Aaron Judge Hitless with three strikeouts,
they get lit up by catcher Austin Wells,
who is not some schmuck out there, by the way.
Don't let the mustache fool you.
The dude's got talent, former first round pickback in 20,
2020. He's a good player. And he was the difference maker in Friday's game. He goes yard twice,
once off starter Eric Fetty and then again off reliever Riley O'Brien. The Yankees win that one by a
score of six to three. Now Fetty, he was all right. He was all right. He worked five and a third,
gave up four hits, struck out eight, but he's only won once so far in a Cardinals uniform.
He has one win of the six starts for the Cardinals that he's made. One in four, four points. Four
six four ERA since the trade. Now, on his defense, the cardals have not hit very well when Eric Fetty
is on the mound. They have only scored more than three runs in his starts once, once.
And that was the game against Tampa Bay that, hey, lo and behold that he won. Run support in the
six starts for Eric Fetty, three, five, one, two, three, and three. Now, we hope that he can
do better than that. I mean, we realize that there's been a couple games in there that haven't
gone great, but it's not like he's been pure poop either. But we hope for better. But he also,
you got to get some offense behind him if you want to win games. Saturday, Kyle Gibson had a monster
bounced back game after struggling against the Padres. You know, you get lit up by San Diego.
What was it? Seven runs that he gave up was just, it was awful. And he comes out at Yankee
stadium and fires seven innings. He allows one run on five hits. He strikes out six, leaves the game
six to one commanding lead for the Cardinals. But we know how the Cardinals hate winning by a lot,
at least normally. Sunday was a different story. But at least normally, at least normally,
they prefer one-run games. That's just who they are. It's bizarre. The Yankees make this ferocious
comeback. Matthew Libertor had a rare tough outing, a couple of real hits and then a couple of
a dingheds, which got him in trouble. Stanton missed that game tying grand slam off of
Kittridge by like a foot. And I think all of our hearts skipped the beat. When as soon as it left
the bat, I was like, oh my gosh, no way, are we going to blow a five run lead? And they almost did.
They almost did. But in the end, they hold on for the six to five when Helsley grabs his
42nd save of the year. Another one run game. The Cardinals are 25 and 18 in one run games this season.
they've been able to win more than they've lost, but boy, is it stressful to keep doing that.
Those 25 one-run wins tied with the raise for the most in Major League Baseball.
Gibson had gone eight starts without a win before Saturday.
It had not been pretty, so it was nice to see him get off the Schneid.
Now offensively in that game, Brennan Donovan, who had a huge series,
hits the big three-run home run, the Cardinal score four runs in that third inning.
And according to Rob Raines at STL Sportspage.com, it was only the 23rd home run by
the Cardinals this season with a runner in scoring position up to that point.
We know things changed on Sunday.
But Raines also pointed out that after Saturday, the Cardinals had hit 139 home runs this
year.
Only 16% came with a runner on either second or third.
So in scoring position.
And there are 23 home runs with a man in scoring position were the fewest in the major
leagues.
And we all know it.
You watch the games.
The eyeball test shows you how much they've struggled in that stuff.
But then when the stats come out and you see them in front of you, you're just like, oh, my God.
Like, how is it this bad?
It's crazy.
It's crazy.
It doesn't make any sense when you look at the talent that is on your team.
But then on Sunday, the boys did a little bit of everything, right?
The boys come out swinging against lefty, Nestor Cortez.
We know they've struggled against lefties all season.
That guy, Cortez, been pretty darn good.
Pretty darn good.
He had himself a really good August and was really good over the last three starts had given up
just one run total over those three starts.
But they jump out to that seven to two lead.
You get the RBI single by Walker in the second.
They score in the fourth inning.
They get all these runs with two outs.
Remember they get to just go bonkers.
They get the well-placed two-out, two-run double down the line by Mason Wend,
just kind of floated it out there.
And it just happened to not be anywhere where an outfielder can get to it.
So it falls in.
That scores too.
You get the big two-run blast by Luke and
Baker that stretched it to five to two, just an absolutely great at bat for Luke and Baker.
God, has he shown outstanding patience at the plate since getting called back up?
Eight pitch at bat there where the whole time he looked in control, like watching his swings,
watching the way he was eyeing the ball, he was just seeing it well, and you could just sense
it.
You could just sense it that he was going to tee off on one.
I could just feel it.
Like just everything about that at bat,
just like he was locked in and had an idea of what Nestor was trying to do
and smash it over the wall in left field.
It's just been a night and day type of comparison to what we saw when he came up last year
where he was overwhelmed a lot.
And I know you can look at Lucan Baker's 167 batting average right now and be like,
I get that.
But look beyond that.
Look at the OBP, which is at 385.
He's drawn seven walks.
to go along with the two home runs and seven RBIs,
and he's done that in 26-plate appearances.
And he's already matched the two dingers he hit last year.
He only had 10 RBIs last year,
and that was at 99 plate appearances.
He did have 13 walks last year,
but I'm just saying he looks like a night and day type of where he was last year.
Like he looked like he was, what's the thing you guys all say,
that he's a 4A type of hitter?
he doesn't look like it right now.
And yeah, the average isn't great.
But look beyond that and look at the damage he's doing.
Look at the walks.
He's on base a lot.
Luke and Baker's done very, very well since he's been up here.
He just looks so much more comfortable.
Top of the fifth inning, you get the two-run Jack by Walker,
just a mammoth shot, 420 feet to left center.
And we're feeling pretty good right now, right?
We're seven to two, but we do have Miles Michaelis on the mound.
And we know that you play the game of Michael's roulette when he started.
and you never know when it's going to happen.
You were hoping the second inning when things got a little wonky.
That was his bad inning.
But no, no, no, no.
The Lizard King says, I can trump that.
And although they did throw out a stat that if they score, what is it,
they score over five runs when Michaelis starts, he's 32 and O,
which is completely wild.
That's amazing.
What an amazing stat that was.
But Miles just, he's just so hitable.
He's so hitable.
And the Yankees creep back into this one, make it seven to five.
And a lot of the stuff that was going on there to,
it wasn't necessarily that Miles was pitching bad.
But there was a lot of things the Cardinals were doing to beat themselves.
And Michaelis was involved in this, the error in the second inning.
When Jazz Chisholm, he bends over to touch the Rosenberg or something,
and jazz takes off from second, throws it away at third.
Run comes around to score.
Just little league baseball stuff right there.
That was embarrassing.
First error in six years, though.
for Michaelis, which was another cool stat they dropped.
He then double clutches on a taper back to him.
Like he thought about getting Rizzo, who was going to third.
Rizzo stops, mind you.
You had him dead to right.
And he still was like, I don't know what to do.
throws it the first.
It goes a little bit wide.
And Goldie can't corral it.
And they give the air to Goldie on that one,
although Michaelis was like, that was me.
That extended things, that inning in the Yankees.
At that point, they just start hitting everything Miles puts up there.
You get a single, you get a double.
you had the error, you had a single and a single.
And just like that, Miles Michaelis is out of this game, has vanished.
And he lasts just four innings despite being given a five-run lead.
And you just can't have that.
Like, you can't have that.
That's unacceptable.
He's essentially the right-handed version of Patrick Corbyn right now.
And we all know how bad Patrick Corbyn has been.
Go look up the stats.
It's just him and Corbyn at the top of all the worst things you can be good at.
or bat at, I should say, like the hits and the batting average against and the runs against.
Like, it's them too up there all the time. And that's not good. And I really hope there's a plan in
place for next year because he and his $17.6 million salary, it's a liability in the rotation
and it stands out quite a bit on the payroll. One of the worst extensions that John Moselek has been
a part of. And I said before when they signed him, I was like, that's probably not a bad idea. I did not
that Michaelis was going to go down the crapper the way he has.
It just has not worked out for him.
I don't know.
It's because the shift and stuff changing,
and it's just there's bigger holes out there for him to get hit against.
There's just more green.
I don't know what it is.
I'm sure that has something to do with it, but it's not good.
John King comes in.
He does a great job to clean things up and hold it to seven to five,
but the Yankees end up tying it up at seven.
So the Cardos do end up blowing that five-run lead.
Again, it's stuff that they do to themselves.
You get the lead off walk of the inning, which is always a problem.
It ended up being a problem for the Yankees later in the game,
but they lead off walk to Stanton.
King gets the grounder to by Jazz Chisholm over to Donovan,
but Donovan double clutches.
They can't turn to Jazz didn't steal second base.
Herrera hits John King on the throwdown to second base.
Like what is that?
Like what is that?
What are we doing with throwing the ball to second base?
How is it so bad?
Like it's unbelievable.
Yeah, King has to like defend himself from getting pelted by Herrera.
Who ends up hitting the Yankees pitcher later with a batted ball up the middle
and they crack the joke like he hates pitchers today.
Rizzo ends up singling.
Raleigh O'Brien comes in.
He gets the grounder, but it takes kind of a high chopping bounce.
And Mason Winn can't corral it.
He'll tell you he should have had that.
That should have been a double play.
that doesn't work out, goes as a single, then they get another single sack fly.
Victor Scott makes a great catch in center field.
He's looked outstanding, although do you get a little nervous when he does his little
deer skip move when he goes to catch the ball?
Like, I don't know what that is as long as he don't drop the ball, but like every time he does
and I'm like, oh, like I get nervous about it.
It's just the old guy in me, I guess.
But a lot of that inning was just sloppy, ugly baseball.
And with that, with the second inning,
and it let the Yankees back in it.
They didn't really deserve to be in there.
They should have been more like a seven to three game,
but they helped them out.
So stuff like that,
the good teams don't do.
The Cardinals let them right back in it.
They blow it.
They need it to be a,
once again,
it's like,
okay,
got to have a close game,
huh?
But luckily,
the Cardinals bats,
they stayed extremely hot.
They blow things open in that Sabbath
Lars Neupar,
huge clutch hit.
Newpar looking good right now.
Please stay healthy,
please stay healthy.
Can we get the nude that we've
all hoped we'd see. And he's starting to become that right now. Please stay healthy.
This is the point where something goofy happens to him and he injures like a toe or something
dumb happens. And he goes down for a couple more weeks now that he's starting to hit. He's getting
hot. He's getting comfortable. But the huge two out, bases load of double makes it 10-7.
Victor Scott then rips a double almost in the same spot. 11-7. Mason Wynn goes to lay down the
bunt, gets the single, forces an errand throw. Another run comes in.
newt with Homer in the ninth inning to put them up by a touchdown and that's how it ended.
Just a monster day at the plate for the youngsters.
Walker, Newt bar, Newt drives in five.
Goldie, three more hits.
He goes seven for 11 in the series.
And I noticed it too.
And I saw somebody wrote to me on Twitter about this as well.
He's like, did you notice that Goldie kind of has like a more open stance now?
I did notice that he looks more in tune.
And I don't, small adjustments, man.
And he's just hitting it where they're pitching.
him. And I mean, up to 244 now, Goldie's starting to pick it up. Donnie had three more hits,
21 hits on the day, the most they've had in a game since 2020. Cardinals go eight of 18 with
runners in scoring position. And for the three game series, 15 of 30 in those situations,
who are these guys? This is the stuff that we hoped we'd see all year. And like a game like
that, obviously crazy stats, right? And it's not always going to look like that. And it's not always going to
look like that. But you thought it'd be closer to this kind of an offense than what we've seen
for most of the year. And here we are in September. And for at least this weekend, the offense was
clicking. The offense was clicking. And it was really awesome to see. Cardinals pitchers,
give him a hand, man. They held Aaron Judge, arguably the greatest hitter on the planet right now.
Him and Shohei, probably one and two, held him to just one head. He got a single in 12 at bat,
struck them out seven times, including three times on Sunday, that's how you beat the Yankees.
You do what you can against Juan Soto, but don't let Aaron Judge beat you, and you can beat them.
You can definitely beat them, and the Cardinals prove that.
Injury and roster updates.
Let's get to that next, plus a quick preview of what's going on in Milwaukee for the next three days on Locked on Cardinals.

A lot of movement going on with the Cardle's roster right now.
They've activated Stephen Match.
You saw him in the bullpen yesterday.
Michael Siani also has been activated from the injured list as the rosters expand to 28 here in September.
Although Siani was not available in New York, he's actually traveling from his rehab assignment in Springfield.
We'll be in Milwaukee today with the team.
Ali also said, interestingly, that Siani is going back in the starting lineup right away.
So that means Victor Scott is either going to the bench or he's going back down to Memphis.
Now, if you're going to bench him, just send him down.
Again, stop screwing around with these prospects and let them play.
Scott has done all you can ask for in his time back on the team.
Defense, good.
You've seen the improvements in his.
swing. You've seen the power that he's been able to generate with the new leg kick. Don't let him
rot on the bench. I plead. Don't let him rot on the bench. Don't make him a defensive replacement
or a pinch runner. Either play him or send him back to Memphis to keep playing. Okay? Thank you.
Matt's got up for a bit in the game on Sunday before they ended up switching up and going to
John King instead. So he's ready to go. They haven't said whether he's going to be just a bullpen guy or
starter guy. You know how the Cardinals are. They don't know what the hell they're doing.
They don't know how to make up their mind on what they want to do with people. So we'll see how it shapes
out with Stephen Matt's, but he's back. Lance Lynn made a rehab start for Memphis and Iowa,
gave up five runs all in the second inning. 80 pitches, three and two-thirds innings. He struck out
eight. I don't know where he's going to go in the rotation. I don't know what you're going to
do with him unless you're going to take Michaelis out. He's the only like really weak link.
that has been in this rotation.
Like you're not going to move gray.
You're not going to move Fetty.
You know, you got Michaelis.
Palante, you better not touch Andre Palante.
You're not going to move out Gibson.
I don't know what you're going to do with Lance Lynn.
But in Milwaukee for three starting today, Palante versus Peralta,
Tuesday, sunny gray and Savali.
And then Wednesday, Fetti against Colin Ray.
The Brewers are up to 80 wins now.
Thirdmost in baseball.
They took three or four from the Reds in their series.
they've got this division all wrapped up and ready to go.
You know how tough they are.
They are very, very annoying.
They're a very good team.
Defensively, offensively, great pitching.
They're tough.
But you just took two to three of them.
So they're not unbeatable.
They're not unbeatable, obviously.
And you had some success against them at Bush Stadium.
And the way the offense looked in New York,
Milwaukee's a good place to hit.
Hopefully they keep it up.
Wild card-wise, the Mats have won four in a row.
They're not one back of Atlanta for the third wild card spot.
The Cubs, the Cubs out of nowhere are streaking.
Meet them in the quad.
They're going streaking.
They've won six in a row.
They're now three back of Atlanta.
They're ahead of the Cardinals, and the Cardinals are five back.
The Cubs offense is just exploding right now.
So Cardinals' offense, they're doing some good things after this weekend in New York.
Still got a chance.
Still got a chance.
It's not a lot.
There's not a great percentage that they're.
going to make the playoffs, but we got a month to work with here in September.
And things have been going better, right?
You've been feeling much better about this team and about this offense.
And it has a lot to do with them trusting their youth and letting them play.
So that's hope the bat stay hot in Milwaukee.
That's all I could say.
That's all I could say.
