This is a show serving Cardinal Nation and giving the best fans in baseball all of the info about the birds on the bat. And boy, we got some stuff to talk about today. The Cardinals took on the Mets and the Nationals in split squad action. And they were able to walk away with victories in both games. which is great news. Lots of things to discuss in both of these games, mostly positive, but the headline from today's game is not a good one. Jordan Walker, the Cardinal starting right fielder, a guy that, you know, they're relying heavily on to be one of the big bats to have a bounce back year for this offense so that they can become what they feel like they can be in 2025, had to leave today's game with left knee pain and will undergo further. evaluation to determine the cause and the severity. Now, he did make an bat in his game today.
Starting point is 00:01:40 He struck out, went out to the field, played, caught a fly ball, and didn't appear to have any issues tracking down the ball. But if you look back on the video, you can notice that he kind of grimaces a little bit and then was removed at the end of the inning. Derek Gould from STL Today.com reports that Ali said that there is some soreness there and that the cardals expect to know more by Wednesday morning and that Walker was scheduled to have some imaging done on his left knee to rule anything out. The initial diagnosis was just pain in his left knee, according to a team spokesperson. Ali declined to describe any concern until talking more with Walker and hearing back from the team's medical staff. Marmal said that the move during the game was made due to an abundance of precaution, which makes a lot of sense.
Starting point is 00:02:29 Now, the strikeout dropped Walker's batting average down in 143 for the spring. He's two for 14. He's got a double. He's got two RBIs. He's also struck out eight times. Hardly the start anyone was hoping for. And hopefully this isn't something, you know, when I'm talking about this knee injury, that will keep him on the shelf for long.
Starting point is 00:02:49 But at this point of spring, like you mentioned, you know, an abundance of precaution. You aren't forcing any of these guys to take any chances with any sort of discomfort at this point. But we have to prepare ourselves for the worst things. And sure, this could be a long-term injury of some sort. To me, it doesn't appear to be just looking at the way he reacted and stuff on the video. It didn't appear that it looked like that it was something major that's going on there. But, you know, any sort of like, you know, tendonitis or any sort of things that are going on in there could put him down for a little while, right? So if something hinders the beginning of his season,
Starting point is 00:03:29 And we're talking about the guy that was going to be the starting right fielder for the Cardinals, no matter how bad his spring was. This is his job. He's going to be the starting right fielder. But if he's injured, well, what happens then? Lucky for the Cardinals, they do have some depth in the outfield, which we've talked about a lot. My everydayers know this. They can help out with a situation like this.
Starting point is 00:03:51 Now, right now it appears that the starting outfield went healthy is going to be Brennan Donovan and left field, Lars Dupar and Sitterfield, and Jordan. Walker and right. On your bench or D-Hing, however they want to use these guys. You would have Michael Siani, who started in center field for most of last season. Alec Berlinson, who led the team in RBI's and was second and home runs behind Paul Goldschmidt, Victor Scott the second. He's a guy, continued his tour in spring today with a button single and a devil and a stolen base. You've got Matt Coperniac who popped his first home run of the spring, plus utility man Michael Helman, who can play both infield and outfield,
Starting point is 00:04:30 but hasn't made much of a case to make the opening day roster this spring. He's 0 for seven so far. So let's just look at the top three guys. Let's do a quick snapshot of what the top three guys who would benefit with Jordan Walker having to step aside for, you know, hopefully what is a short amount of time. Because of the inability to move Nolan Arnado this offseat, and it's been Alec Berlinson, who's basically getting pinched the most, right,
Starting point is 00:05:02 of guys that probably deserves it, bats, considering what we saw from him last year, had a strong second pro season last year, as I mentioned, led the team in RBI's was second and home runs to Paul Goldschmidt. He did struggle against left-handers last year, big time, and then he cooled off a big time in the second half of the season overall. But his bat to ball skills, very, very good, one of the best guys on the the team with just putting the ball into play, what you like. The defense, though, it's limited at best.
Starting point is 00:05:33 You know, he's got a very good arm, but, you know, the mobility is not his thing. You know, you don't really prefer him to be the guy that's roaming around in the outfield. Definitely not going to be a center fielder, obviously, but he's a corner guy. But DH in first base seemed to be the best spots for him, not only this season, but in the future. You know, it doesn't seem like outfields the best place to keep him. And if you can, you don't want them out there. This spring, he's been chilly at the plate, like a lot of hitters on the Cardinals, going two for 13.
Starting point is 00:06:07 He's got one Airbnb a couple of walks, just one strikeout. Michael Ciani, I was a huge fan of this guy, still am, amazing on defense last year, but he offers very little upside offensively. Just being honest, like, he's just, the hitting is not Michael Ciani. 40, right? So far this spring, he's proving that. He's hitting a whopping 67. He's gone one for 15 with two walks and five strikeouts. Then we've got Victor Scott the second, who clearly was not ready for the major leagues at the beginning of last season, was forced onto the opening day roster and to play. They knew we wasn't ready. They were like, well, let's just see. Maybe we catch lightning
Starting point is 00:06:48 in a bottle. They didn't. He was overwhelmed by the pitching at the major league level. But The guy is making a massive statement so far this spring. As I mentioned earlier, two for three in today's game, pushing his average this spring to a team leading 5.83. He's seven for 12. He's got a dinger. He's got three RBIs. He's walked three times.
Starting point is 00:07:10 He's only struck out twice. He's got six runs scored and four stolen bases. And we know the guy is solid defensively, perhaps not at Siani's level yet, but probably closer to his level than people. people really give him credit for and think because you haven't seen a whole lot of them yet at the major league level, but he did win a gold glove in the minor leagues. And he's got skills. Obviously, the speed is a big deal for him. It covers a lot of ground in center field. The Cardinals struggled on
Starting point is 00:07:40 offense last year. We all know this. And if guys like Walker and Gorman don't get better, they're going to struggle again this year. These are things that we already know. It's why watching these two not have success early on in the spring is kind of disheartening. Because you were hoping they would come out and look a little bit better than this, because this is a lot like what we saw last year. And you were hoping they would come out and do better. Victor Scott is the one guy that can give you an added spark of offense with his speed. And yet still can give you excellent defense in center field.
Starting point is 00:08:18 That is Victor Scott the second. The other two guys have their limitation. Siani, good defensively, not much offense. Burleson, good offensively, specifically against right-handers, it's going to hurt you on the defensive side of things and doesn't hit well against lefties. So Victor Scott clearly appears to be the one guy who would benefit the most as far as playing time goes if Jordan Walker is unavailable. Is he ready for the major leagues this time around?
Starting point is 00:08:48 It's a pretty good year to find. that out. You know, this isn't a win now scenario with the Cardinals where it's like, oh, you know, World Series aspirations from the get go. If things fall the right way, maybe that happens later on. Obviously, that's being a little too optimistic. But if Walker misses time, you can keep Donnie and left. You can put Victor in center field. You can move Newpar over to right field where he probably belongs in the first place. And Burleson can fill in at those corner spots. He can D.H against righties when needed. That does give you three lefties in the lineup in the outfield.
Starting point is 00:09:24 So if you face a South Paul, that's probably going to be an issue because the Cardinals are, they're already short on right-handed hitters in the outfield already. Losing Walker would add to that problem. It's what made guys like Tommy Edmund and Dylan Carlson, valuable, was, you know, how they were able to hit left-handers. You've still got Aronado and when and Contreras and Herrera plus Luke. and Baker. So it's not like, you know, the cupboard is completely bare of right-handed hitters on the roster, but it's still an issue because you don't have those guys in the outfield where you've got
Starting point is 00:09:59 three spots that you got to fill. It's kind of a bummer that Thomas Adjacy can't play one of those corners. If you couldn't, you know, make him a Donovan type of guy and have him play some outfield this year to help out with that. If you only have the right-handed hitting outfielder, where they're genuinely just an outfielder for the most part is Michael Helman, who's on the 40-man roster. That's it. Listen to the outfielders. It's Jordan Walker and it's Michael Helman on your 40-man roster.
Starting point is 00:10:27 You got two righties. You got six lefties. And now you got one who's got a bad wheel. So not great. Not great. Could this open the door for Coperniac to make the roster? Again, he's a left-handed hitter. So, you know, is that something that you need is another left-handed,
Starting point is 00:10:45 bat to be a part of this step chart. So again, this is all just speculation. This is me just spewing out thoughts that I'm thinking about like, okay, where would they go from here? At this moment, we don't know the severity of the injury to Jordan Walker. Again, we're hoping that it's not something major. It's something maybe get him off his feet for a couple of days and a little bit of treatment and maybe whatever the soreness stuff is that he's dealing with might go away. But maybe not. So leave me your thoughts and comments on how you would manipulate the hands. outfield if Jordan's out at all. Do that in the comment section down below or on X at L.O. underscore Cardinals. We're going to discuss today's games next. A lot of good things to talk about,
Starting point is 00:11:27 which includes an excellent job done by the Cardinals pitching staff versus the Mets and the nationals. We'll get into it next on Lockdown Cardinals. Thank you again for making Lockstone Cardinals your first listen every day. You can leave your comments on YouTube as well as on X anytime you want. Your feedback is always welcome and encouraged. day two wins. You love to see that, right? That's being positive here. And allowing just five runs across 18 innings, very impressive. And knowing that only four of those runs actually were earned and came off a guy who probably won't be on the roster anyway, got to make you feel even better about what happened today against the Mets and the national.
Starting point is 00:12:16 So let's begin with the starters, two young pitchers who continue to impress in Michael McGreevy and Andre Palante. Let's start with the McGreevy side of things, who was with the road team taking on the Washington Nationals today. McGreevy goes three innings. He allows one single to Ahmed Rosario in the third inning, but got four ground outs, two flyouts, a pop out and a strikeout. He's now gone five innings this spring, has not allowed a run, has given up one hit and has struck out three. So in two appearances, he's retired 15 of 16 batter so far that he's faced and has done everything that you can ask of him. And as I've said since spring began, if I'm in charge, Michael McGreevy is in my rotation.
Starting point is 00:13:03 Let's see if he's what we think he can be, former first round pick. You saw something in him when you drafted him. It's starting to blossom at this point in his career. It was a struggle up until last year. And now things have clicked. and he's become really, really good in the time that we've seen him. Again, it's a short sample size, you know, very small from the four appearances last year during the regular season.
Starting point is 00:13:30 You've got two appearances so far here in the spring. I understand that. But if it's a competition between and you're deciding between him and Stephen Matts right now, Michael McGreevy needs to be in the rotation and Matt's needs to be in your bullpen until further notice. I don't want to jump around between games. So let's just kind of, you know, stick with the nationals one here. I don't want things to get too confusing if you're listening. Following McGreevy's three innings, another young pitcher that the Cardinals are hoping will also continue to blossom further.
Starting point is 00:14:02 And that is Matthew Libertor. Libby shows up McGreevy a little bit in this one. He fires off three no hit eddings while striking out three. He did have one blemish when he walked Ruiz on four straight pitches to start the fifth inning. But outside of that, he was brilliant once again. I don't know if you've been paying attention to what Matthew Libertor has done this spring, but he's now gone a team leading seven innings this spring has allowed zero runs, zero hits at the one walk today, has four punchouts,
Starting point is 00:14:31 and has now retired 21 of 22 batters that he has faced this spring. And I've seen some people suggest that, hey, why not? Why not Matthew Libertor in the starting rotation? And to that, I say the issue really is is that right now you've got six guys ahead of him already. So it would take an unfortunate injury to somebody for him to scooch up there or or a trade of some sort. I mean, that's something because, you know, you continue to see that maybe like, you know, Eric Fetty might be somebody who gets moved. What if somebody comes calling for Miles Michaelis? And he decides, that's fine. I'll take a trade. That no trade clause really
Starting point is 00:15:12 stinks with Michaelis right now, doesn't it? Or Stephen Matts? You know, what if somebody wants to get their hands on Stephen Matt's. You know, this is, this is something that could happen, you know, as injuries continue to kind of trickle down around the league with starting pitching. So, some have also suggested that, that Michaelis and Matt's going to the bull pit should be something that they look into. I just don't think that's something that's likely to happen. I don't think they, first off, they still love Miles Michaelis. They love them as a person. They love them as a clubhouse guy. They're not, I don't see them saying, you know what, we're going to push into the in the bullpen, man. I'm sorry. Stephen Matt's on the other side with the injury history
Starting point is 00:15:51 and the fact that he's been in the bullpen before and has been successful there. Makes a lot more sense. I loved Libby in the pen last year. I didn't hide that fact. I will love him there again this year and hope that he continues to thrive in the bullpen. I'm not closing the book on him as being a starter at some point in his career. But at this very moment in the beginning, of March of this season, bullpen. I keep him in the bullpen. And, you know, he's kind of like, he's kind of like Maverick in the first top gun
Starting point is 00:16:26 where he's on ready alert in case somethings go down, whether it's injuries, whether it's trades, if something goes down, then you're sliding him up the totem pole there. And perhaps then he gets some stars or he gets a spot start here. Right now, though, starting rotation is pretty healthy, which is good. to keep it that way. When you got a healthy starting five or six, then you're doing all right in Major League Baseball. The final three guys for the Cardinals against the Nats, you had veteran Nick Anderson, minor league camp pitcher Luis Gastilum, and then Nick Ragit. Now, Anderson had himself a rough day today. Getting just one out, he allows four runs on three hits, two walks, and a strikeouts.
Starting point is 00:17:13 You know, the team took a flyer on him, had a couple of good seasons. a couple of years ago with the Tampa Bay raise as injuries that have set him back. And he's just, he doesn't look like the same guy by any means. So he's a guy that obviously keep an eye on him as being somebody who gets cut at some point. You know, but so far hasn't done anything this spring to warrant keeping him around over any of the younger guys. Gasillam was actually very impressive. I love this for this kid coming in, put out the five. in that game that Anderson enlightened.
Starting point is 00:17:49 He gave up a single, but then he got back-to-back strikeouts. The last one against former number two overall pick, Dylan Cruz, one of the future stars of this league to escape the inning. And then you got two kind of nests from Max Ragitk who walked for you guys, which you hate to see, did that in two winnings, but was able to wiggle out of it, didn't give up a run. So he ends up picking up the W against the Nationals, 6'4. Offensively, Lars Neupar had a big two-run single.
Starting point is 00:18:15 Thomas C.C. ripped his first home run of the spring. That was a solo shot. Nolan Gorman was one for four, but he did not strike out. So that is progress. I know you're going to make fun of them and you're going to make fun of me for saying, ooh, that's the good news about Nolan Gorman. Baby steps, man, to know that he didn't strike out today. That is a step in the right direction for Nolan Gorman. Lucan Baker, Pedro Pahas, had hits. They also benefited from five walks today to the Cardinals. the winning runs actually came in on an absolute nuke of a home run by minor league camp outfielder, Yordelin Pena.
Starting point is 00:18:53 Now, I'll be honest, not very familiar with him. Looked them up. 20-year-old outfielder was playing in the Florida Complex League last year for the Cardinals. Didn't show much power. I think he only had two home runs if memory serves. Did not see the stat cast on this particular home run. But trust me, if you missed it, it was. was an absolute nuke. It was a laser over the wall in left field,
Starting point is 00:19:18 but no doubt are very impressive stuff. We're going to move on to the game at Rogerdeen Stadium where the Cardinals topped the Mets, Andre Palante. It was his time to shine against New York. We'll get into that next on Locked on Cardinals. Then it was the Mets at Roger Dean Stadium with the Cardinals, the home team. Andre Palante, pleasant surprise last year in the second half.
Starting point is 00:21:24 So much the Cardinals said, bye-bye, Lance Lynn, bye-bye, Kyle Gibson, in hopes that what we saw from Palante last year, it wasn't a fluke and that he would continue to even get better from the guy that went eight and seven and an ERA at 3.5, six, not sucks, six in the second half of last year, 20 starts for Palante last year. And on Tuesday, he looked good.
Starting point is 00:21:51 He mowed through the Mets, tossing three shutout innings, allowing just one hit. He struck out two and did it on just 31 pitches. So very efficient. All five outs that weren't strikeouts were via the ground ball, which is when Palante is on, you know it, I know it. Ground ball machine, which included getting Pete Alonzo on a double play in the third inning to erase the one single that he did allow against him. Much better outing.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Much better outing. is the Palante we're used to, compared to the one that we saw in his first start this spring when he allowed four runs on five hits and had two walks and just an inning of work against the Marlins. So very nice to see him rebound. Very encouraging. Following Palante, you had a slew of guys that we're going to see in the bullpen for the Cardinals this year. Ryan Halsley, Closer, allowed a hit, but through one scoreless inning with a strikeout. He shaved his mustache. I do believe. I saw him in the interview. He was talking with the ESPN guys. and it appeared to me that he had trimmed the mustache off.
Starting point is 00:22:52 If I'm wrong, let me know, but it didn't look like it was there anymore. Ryan Fernandez still has his, continues outstanding spring with another shutout frame that included one walk and a punchee. Fernandez has yet to give up a run or hit in four innings while striking out seven so far for the Cardinals. Kyle Leahy, who is battling for a bullpen spot. He tossed two shutout frames, allowed one hit. He struck out three.
Starting point is 00:23:16 He's got five Ks and four innings this spring. allowing no runs in just one hit. Obviously, he's a guy that is, you know, on the bubble. You know, it's like him and the Chris Roycrofts and the Riley O'Brien's all fighting for those final spots in the bullpen this year and to find out who's going to take on that role that Andrew Kittredge had last year. So good to see Kyle Leahy coming through. Wrapping it up for the Cardinals pitching staff today.
Starting point is 00:23:43 Cardinals number three prospect, Tink Hents. Tink, if you remember, had a really rough first outing. this spring when he got shelled by the Yankees got taken out. Then they brought him back in with that reentry rule and he was much better when he came in the second time against the Yankees. This particular outing wasn't without its warts. He did go two innings and allowed two hits, one and run thanks to a fielding error, so not his fault. He walked one. Did not have a strikeout, but, you know, it's a step in the right direction. It's not what we saw in that first half inning against the Yankees. So young right-hander, a lot of talent. He's,
Starting point is 00:24:18 learning. He's trying to get comfortable. We're not going to, we're not going to bash him for not getting strikeouts, but it's an observation. Offensively, things were pretty quiet for a while for this offense. Jose Fermin drove in, Brendan Donovan early on with a single in the second inning, but it wasn't until the sixth when the Cardinals really kind of woke up. Things got fun in that inning. Mason when got his first hit of the spring out of boy, Mason. And he gave a nod to the gods and threw his hands up. It was like, thank you in a joking way because it's been a struggle for him this spring. You know, got a hit to break that slump was over spring so far. And he even did an interview with the guys from ESPN in between innings talking about it how he was like, I asked for the ball as a souvenir, you know, because it's so special to finally break this streak.
Starting point is 00:25:07 You know, he was having some fun with it. I said it had been a while since he had a slump like that. But it's gone. So hopefully good things for Mason. In that interview, we talked about, you know, putting on weight to, you know, to help with the grind of the season. So he's able to play even more because, you know, the guys lose weight as the season goes on. So we added about 10 pounds this year to be in better shape for the grind of the season.
Starting point is 00:25:33 He talked about working with Ozzie Smith. He talked about the ugly flip sunglasses from Nolan Ardenado. So it's a good interview. So if you can find it, I encourage you go check that out. So after his single Victor Scott second, he hits his double second and third. Contreras hits one back to the mound. The other's choice to get Mason when kind of in between first and third, which was that's a bad running mistake,
Starting point is 00:25:57 but you'd rather that happen in the spring than the regular season. Then after that play, though, Nolan Arnato rakes a two run rocket double off the wall and left field to make it three to nothing. Nato up to 235 this spring. He's got five RBI's, 17 of bats, but two doubles. at a home run, and that was what was really missing last year. You didn't see the power. You weren't seeing the extra base hits from Nolan Aronado last year. So good to see him and his bat speed doing quite well so far. After the Jose Fermin double, Matt Coperniac made a five to nothing with a two
Starting point is 00:26:27 run shot in the seventh inning. That was his first of the spring. That was a laser as well over the right field wall. Had to cut it through the wind too because it was very windy at Roger Dean today. So you love to see that. He's now hitting 313. He's tied with Wilson. for the second most hits on the team. And then you had catching prospect Leonardo Bernal, who is ranked seventh of the organization by the new rankings from MLB Pipeline. He had an RBI single. Cards win that one, six to one.
Starting point is 00:26:55 So it was a lot of good stuff today. It was a lot of good, a lot more than bad for both games. A lot of encouraging things on the pitching side of things. When you see the guys that you expect to be on this roster on opening day and getting the bulk of innings throughout the season, and to see all of them do pretty well. You love it. McGreevy, Palante Libertore dominant today.
Starting point is 00:27:19 So that was awesome. Offensively, Victor Scott, scorching right now, continues to dominate the headlines of like, how is this guy not the starting center fielder?
