The Cardinals played the Mariners tough, but come up short on Sunday and get swept by Seattle.
This is Locked on Cardinals.
You are locked on Cardinals.
Your daily St. Louis Cardinals podcast, part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Hey there, Cardinals fans. I'm J.D. Haffern. And on today's show, we've got our, who's hot,
who's not segment. We'll let you know who's doing well, who's not doing so well.
We're going to read some comments from fans today in our Cardinal Confessions.
We're going to break down the action in the NL Central to see where everybody's standing as we start a new week.
But we began with the game itself on Sunday.
And it was another tough one to swallow as the Cardinals blow two different leads, albeit they were only one run leads.
But they end up falling to the Seattle Mariners 3 to 2.
They get swept in the series by Seattle.
It was another tight ball game that had the Cardinals leading.
Not once but twice, but the bullpen can't make it stick,
which is something we are becoming all too familiar with in 2026.
You grabbed the lead early on on another JJ Weatherholt home run.
It's now got five on the season, by the way.
Seattle answers back with the solo shot from Cal Raleigh,
who hit 60 of them last year.
So really no shame when the big dumper takes you deep.
It's pretty darn good.
And, you know, he did it with nobody on base.
So you're attacking the strike zone against him there.
you get your second run of the game on another Nathan Churchill run.
What a series that guy had.
His fifth of the season.
And the real question was, how would Ali use the bullpen?
After that wild game on Saturday, they saw him use seven relievers.
And unfortunately, in the losing effort, was trying to get the win, brought all his best
guys hitting to close it out, couldn't get it done.
So on Sunday, nine outs to go, you got a one run lead, two to one ball game.
who's got some bullets left in their arm to help out.
First out of the pen ends up being Matt Sonson.
And if this was Sponson from 2025,
you'd be ecstatic to see him.
But the Matt's Fonson we've gotten this year has not been that guy.
Right.
And granted, last three appearances before Sunday,
had not been scored upon.
So he had been looking better.
So the move, in my opinion, was really a bad one by any means.
You got to go with who you got left out there.
And Sonson gets the first two hitters, no big deal, does it with ease, four pitches.
And then it's Connor friggin' Joe again, the guy that burned them on Saturday,
hits two while bloop doubled the left field, and then that gets followed up by another weak
contact single to write by Cole Young, and you got a tight ball game.
I think he broke both these guys' bats.
with these pitches because they didn't go hardly anywhere.
And I'm as sick as anybody about hearing about the weak contact.
Well, you know, you got weak content.
I'm so tired of using that as an excuse.
But at the same time, how unlucky for Sponson.
Bus both bats, Joe's double, 65.7 miles per hour off the bat.
Young single, 67 miles per hour.
and they find grass.
But when you lack swing and miss,
which is a real problem with the Cardinals pitching staff,
we've seen it for years with them.
We're seeing it again in 2026.
It's something they're trying to fix by signing and trading guys
who have more swing and miss.
This is what happens.
Ryan Stannick, he comes in and strikes out the side,
gets three of them in the eighth inning,
got helped out by his catcher,
Yvonne Herrera, who was able to get the ABS challenge.
So we got the strikeout instead of a walk.
So good for him.
Was hitting 101 on Sunday.
Not like he doesn't have the arm.
We know that.
It's just location and getting people to chase the slider.
But it'd be nice to get him turned around because this bullpen needs it.
We need some guys with some swing and miss.
We just don't have enough.
Ninth inning Ollie goes to Joe Joe,
who gets Radia Rosa Rita to fly out.
And then Seattle Pinch hits with the lefty killer.
Rob Reff Snyder.
Pinch hits for the lefty Luke Rayleigh.
And we saw on this at bat to pretty bad calls by the home plate umpire John Bacon.
First one, and he got away with it and it went for the cardinal.
Second one tried to call him out on strikes, but was way wide.
And ref Snyder was like, ah, a challenge.
And got that one correct.
It was the right call.
Bacon, by the way, the home plate umpire had eight calls overturned in this game,
four of them by Ivan Herrera.
And after the call got overturned,
count goes three and two,
Jojo hangs a sweeper.
Ref Snyder smokes it.
Solo blast a left to make a three to two and just completely sucked whatever energy
was left at Bush Stadium.
Just gone.
Now three straight games that Jojo has been scored upon after not giving up anything in his
first 10 appearances. It's also the second home run that he's given up this year. He only gave up to
all of last year. And there's really no excuse. It's not like he wasn't fresh coming into the series,
hadn't pitched since the Houston series. So can't blame it on that. Just didn't execute.
Planning simple. Those are the words you're going to hear a lot this year. Just didn't execute.
And I say this all the time. Sometimes the batter wins. And Ruff Snyder took a good swing on a pitch that
I'm sure Jojo wishes he had back
that he wouldn't have gotten it over
so much of the plate.
And when your top guys cannot get the tough outs
that you need them to get at the end of games,
I don't care who the manager is.
You're screwed.
You're screwed.
Who's the best manager in baseball?
If the last three dudes in their bullpen
don't get the last nine outs, you're screwed.
Okay?
That's all they have to choose from.
Joe, Joe and Riley didn't get done this weekend. It happens.
Have to regroup. Get back at it in Pittsburgh. In the end, the Mariners bullpen outperformed
the Cardinals bullpen all weekend. And, you know, it's not like the Cardinals didn't have chances.
It's not like they didn't have chances against the starter Hancock. He had traffic on the bases all day.
But the Cardinals just could never break through with that RBI hit that they needed.
first inning, two on and two out, Gorman whiffs.
Second inning, two on and one out.
Victor Scott hits a rocket up the middle, but it's right into the shift.
Shortstop's just waiting there at second base, double play ball.
Third inning, JJ Homers, and then you get hits from Walker and Gorman.
Two on, two out, Mason win goes down swinging.
He whiffs.
Fourth inning, Arias, hit by a pitch with one out, but he gets stranded at second.
fifth inning two outwalk to jordan walker gorman grounds out sixth inning you get the nathan church home run
and then it was on to the bullpen just too many missed opportunities and i tweeted after the mason
wind strikeout that it felt like this was going to be their demise like you just had a feeling
that this is why they were going to lose this game just did not take advantage of all the traffic
that was on base in the early innings and i was right
You can blame the bullpen.
You can do that, but you've got to point fingers at other people, too.
And you've got to point fingers at the offense failing to pounce on all those runners early on against a starting pitcher in Emerson Hancock,
who was on the ropes multiple times, and they just could not knock him out.
I give credit to the Cardinals for making all three games in the series entertaining.
Friday and Saturday, you got tight games, both three to two, well-played games, both sides.
on Friday and Sunday. And then, of course, Saturday was just bonkers.
So should you be upset about getting swept at home by the Seattle Mariners? Sure. Nobody wants to lose.
I don't want to lose. Ali doesn't want to lose. The players don't want to lose. The ultimate goal is to win.
But they've now lost four games in a row. Do we get a participation trophy because they were
close? No, their losses. But I also recognize that the Seattle Mariners are considered
an elite team. They're very, very good. Again, that record coming into the series was BS,
because we know they're a better team than that. And their bats started getting hot. Their pitchers
were pretty good. We know the bullpen, you know, is outstanding. Like, that's a great team.
That's a World Series caliber team. And the Cardinals hung with them. They did. Give credit to
the baby birds, you know, and it's a step in the right direction for the franchise.
the Cardinals this year are not supposed to beat those teams.
They're not going to roll over and just, you know,
let them walk over them.
But they're not supposed to be beating those teams.
And they were there.
They had a chance to win at least two or three of these.
Like I was Friday,
I never felt like it was up for grabs.
It seemed like the Mariners were always kind of in control,
even though the game got tied up at one point.
But Saturday and Sunday, they could have won those.
But this team, despite it, you know,
lack of veterans and lack of payroll, they've got me believing that they can win more than they
lose. And this weekend was actually the first couple of games that I actually like got physically
upset about something bad happening. Like the Romero home run, like I was like, you got to be kidding.
I was worked up. And I thought Saturday and Sunday were winnable games. I was astonished that
neither Jojo or Riley O'Brien could get the job done on Saturday.
It's is what it is, man.
17 games of 17 days starting off 0.3, not great.
But it wasn't all bad this week.
And there were some positives and some guys who really played well this week.
And we'll do who's hot and who's not and highlight some of these people coming up next on Lockedong Cardinals.
If you've got a sweet tooth like I do, you know how tough it is to find that perfect treat without all the sugar.
You know, it's warm out.
We're thinking about sweets and ice creams and stuff like that.
And that's why when you need a fix with something sugary tasting, but you don't want the sugar, go to confetti craves five-hour energy drink.
Try it.
It brings that nostalgic flavor back in a whole new way.
Classic taste that you remember.
Tasty caffeine is going to give you a little oomph for your day, a little boost, but no sugar, zero sugar.
Quick, easy way to satisfy that sweet craving while keeping things simple and on the go,
which is one of my favorite things about all the five-hour energies is that they're so convenient.
They're small.
They're portable.
Grab whenever you need one and need a little pick-me-up, you just whoop down the hatch and it's over.
You know, it's not like you have to sip on a big huge beverage for a while and, you know, risk having to go to the bathroom.
You know, I work some long hours at the radio station and PA work.
and podcasting, and I don't want to get filled up on a big energy drink like that.
Five-hour energy, it's quick, it's simple, it tastes great.
It's my go-to.
So if you haven't tried it yet, do it.
The fun fettie flavor is back on five-hour energy.com or on Amazon, crack open

So despite the sweep,
there were some good things that happened in this weekend.
Like it's nothing you should hang your head about.
Like I don't feel bad about it.
I think it sucks because I want to win.
But I was impressed with a lot of things that happened this weekend.
We pointed out some of the bad already.
But despite the sweep, Nathan Church, man, you're seeing this guy come to life.
Had a huge game on Saturday, two dingers, four RBIs, robs the home run.
I'm putting that picture up again because it's awesome.
Follows that up with another solo shot on Sunday.
He's now batting 269 on the season,
which is second only to Jordan Walker on the team right now.
The slugging 507 second to Walker, OPS 818,
third behind Walker and Herrera, two huge bats.
And then there's Nathan Church,
just catching fire and doing everything he could to bring home a winner.
And as I reiterated on Sunday, you know,
this is a rookie we're talking about it,
Nathan Church. Not that long ago, I had a lot of people yelling to send this guy down. He's not good
enough. He's overmatched. And he was for a couple of weeks there. He looked terrible at the plate.
But now look up, but he's one of your best hitters on the team. Certainly one of your best
defenders in the outfield. And the key with Church is just staying consistent. And with Lars
Newpar out for a while, obviously he's going to get a lot of chances as he should. He's
absolutely earned them. Michael McGreevy. Michael McGreevy was awesome on Sunday. Outstanding.
The Cardinals were in a pinch. They didn't have a lot of bullpen arms available. They're like,
dude, we're going to need some help, Michael. I need you to have some quick endings and eat
some innings. And he was able to do it. He was able to do that. After that slugfest on Saturday,
he comes through with six innings of one run ball, didn't walk a single batter. He struck out. He struck
six. He does his job. There's nothing fancy about Michael McGreeby whatsoever. Yet you look up and there
he is usually in the fifth and the sixth inning and the other team hasn't usually done all
that much against him. It's unfortunate he didn't get to accumulate a victory and get a win
in Sunday's game. But ERA is down to 2.97. That's 21st among qualified pitchers in the
National League. His whip is at 0.90. That's sixth best in the National League behind some guys
you might be familiar with. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shota Imanaga, Nolan McLean, Paul Skeen's
Tyler Glassdown. Those are the only people in the National League with a better whip than Michael
McGreevy right now. So not too shabby, not too shabby at all. J.J. Weatherhole, show with love to the
rookie. Had himself a nice series. Had hits in all three games.
five for 14, two solo home runs.
Weatherholt is the first leadoff hitter to hit five home runs for the Cardinals of the first 27 games of the season since Ray Langford hit seven in 1994.
Ray Langford was pretty good.
So is JJ Weatherhole.
Lars Newpar hit his fifth homer out of the leadoff spot last year in the 30th game of the season.
According to Rob Raines at STL Sportspage.com is 162 game pace talking about JJ here.
Like if you go look at what his stats are right now,
and then you see what a pace that he's on for 162 games,
he would be at 30 home runs,
78 RBIs and 24 stolen bases at the end of the season.
So pushing 30-30 in his first year in the big leagues.
He's been a lot of fun to watch.
And I feel like we still haven't seen him get hot yet.
And he's starting to swing the bat with some confidence,
and he's attacking pitchers.
now instead of sitting back.
I, you know, I still want to see him take walks and do the OBP thing.
But when you're a dangerous hitter, man, you got to swing the lumber.
And I think that might have been something that was said to him going into the series was like,
you know, you can attack and you don't have to sit back and wait all the time.
Like, you're really good.
Like, go ahead.
Put bat on ball and see what happens.
And he let her fly this weekend and it was really, really good.
Mason, when?
did not get a hit on Sunday.
So his hit streak comes to an end.
But he did have four hits in the first two games of the series.
He had three RBIs.
Yvonne Herrera, three for nine with a homer,
got hit by a pitch three more times.
He's up to, is it eight?
Is that pretty sad now?
I don't know.
He leads the league in getting hit by a pitch,
and I know the Cardinals as a team lead the league
in getting hit by pitches.
They're just trying to bust these guys in, I guess.
I mean, none of these dudes, like they were talking about
in the telecasts are like,
well, none of these guys are like hanging over the plate or anything.
Yeah, they keep getting punked and they're trying to pitch them inside.
And sometimes it's breaking balls that get away, whatever.
Again, load up on the armor boys.
Like, put some stuff on your elbows, like, protect your hands.
If they're going to be doing this all the time, like, I don't want to see any of you guys get hurt with broken bones
because these pitchers are trying to come in on you.
Nolan, 4'12, had hits at all three games in the series as well.
on the other side of the coin though
Alec Berlinson 0 for 12 he was a
huge hole in the lineup
in this series like came up
multiple times
with chances to do damage or
keep innings going and
he's really fighting it right now
over 12 in the series for Alec Berluson
obviously that's not something we're used to
so I would guess that he's going to heat up here
real soon again but over 12
those really hurt
Jordan Walker just two for 10 he did add two
walks on Sunday. So hopefully he's getting that batter's eye back and he's going to stop chasing
the low and away stuff because that's all they're doing. They're just going to keep whipping it out
there. And very rarely is it ever a strike. Like don't even swing it. You're not going to hit it.
So even if it is a strike. So I just stay off of it. And that's kind of what he did on Sunday. He just
he's like, no, I'm not. I'm not even going to look out there. You know, you're going to have to come
inside if you want to get me and got two walks on Sunday. So I'm cool with that.
Ramon Urius, one for seven, Victor Scott, one for seven. Those guys are struggling.
Ramon got hit by a pitch too. We talked about Palantes, really solid game on Friday,
eight strikeouts in that one, something to build off for for Andre. So again, not all of
it's bad, but a really good Seattle Mariners team who has a more talented roster outlasted
you in all three games.
They were close games.
They were fun games for the most part, a little discouraging because they didn't come out
on top.
But, you know, I'm not, I'm not angry about this.
Like, I love the, the fight that they showed in this one.
And, you know, they're going to be better off because of it.
At least we think so, right?
We're going to check in on some of the comments from fans next on lockdown Cardinals,
because I'm sure everyone else is as calm and relaxed as I am.

Thanks for making Lockton, Carlos, first listen of the day.
Thank you for making Lockdown on the number one sports podcast network.
It's time for Cardinal compressions where you are the listener get to sound off on what's going on with the Cardinals.
Romero is a modern day Tony Fossis, which is a great name.
right there. I wouldn't say he's like that. I mean, he throws a lot harder than Tony did.
But yeah, the last three outings for Tony. Now you got me saying it for Jojo. Not great.
Not great. Maybe he needs to go visit the driving range again. Remember that's how he got his hips back into where he was popping him better.
And maybe he needs to do that. Maybe that'll help him out.
I was at the game.
Now I'm burnt a. F and tired.
I have a sunscreen.
Sunscreen is key, my friend.
I've been to a lot of ballparks,
and Bush Stadium is always one of the hottest and sweatiest places
to watch a baseball game.
And I'm usually coming midsummer too.
Like, I very rarely catch the early season, unfortunately.
And then the humidity is just unbearable at times,
multiple times that the wife and my mom and I,
We've gone and like we can't even sit out there.
Like it's disgusting.
So I get it.
I get it.
Prediction after losing three straight to the Mariners,
Cardinals will lose four straight in Pittsburgh.
I guess the pitching depth isn't as deep as we were led to believe.
Honestly, I'm just more surprised at how rough it's been for the bullpen.
I genuinely did not expect them to be as bad as it's been.
I thought it would be better than this.
I don't think anyone predicted that Matt's Fonson would struggle this way.
Until recently, JoJo and Riley O'Brien were awesome.
They were phenomenal.
Gordon Grisopho has been excellent this year.
But Justin Brule, Ryan Stannick, Chris Roycroft while he was here.
But really the trio of Svons, Brul, Stannick, have been the real problem for me.
And it really comes down to them walking people.
Now, I know Svanson and Stannick have been hit a little bit harder.
But Svanson 12 walks and a hit batsman of 14 and two thirds innings.
So that's 13 free base runners.
Brule, 10 walks, three hit batsman in 14 and a third innings.
13 free base runners.
Stanick, 10 walks and 11 and 2 thirds innings.
Like, you just can't do that as a reliever.
You can't be your own worst enemy.
I said it in one of our episodes this weekend.
You just can't do it.
You can't beat yourself.
And that's what these guys are doing.
They just, they, too many walks, too many free base runners, and it's going to beat you almost every time.
Like, Brule's batting average against is 188.
That's really good.
But when you're putting, what was it, 13 free people on, like, it's killing him.
It's killing him.
And it feels like it always happens after he's got two outs.
I don't know why it feels that way, but it does.
All right.
Season is over.
It was fun pretending that we had a good team for a month there.
You know, it's whatever.
You can close the book on the season if you want to, enjoy your summer.
There's another one, angry.
It's amazing to me that no one has the balls to call this manager out.
He's clearly playing favorites with guys who just aren't as good as he thinks they are,
and they've blown so many games this year.
No one will hold this manager accountable for using six pictures, six pitchers in a game,
and then throwing two relief pitchers in back-to-back games when you had guys in the pen who were rested and who have been starters previously.
Who's going to ask the tough questions and how many outings is Fonson going to be allowed to blow before they DFA them or send them down to the minors?
Well, first of all, every manager has favorites.
They all do.
They all do.
It's not equal.
there's people that he trusts and there's people that he doesn't trust as much.
They got guys for certain situations over other guys.
Romero is who I assume you're talking about pitching a back-to-back games.
He hadn't pitched since the Houston series.
And he only threw 12 pitches on Saturday.
So using him in back-to-back games when the score was close,
seems pretty normal to me.
The game was still on the balance.
Like you're trying to extend it so you can win it.
Riley O'Brien threw a ton on Saturday, which was kind of wild, the pitch count for Riley O'Brien.
So you knew he wasn't coming in on Sunday.
Gordon Grecefo pitched Friday and Saturday.
Ryan Fernandez, is that who you're talking about who didn't pitch this weekend?
Is that who you wanted in instead of Jojo Romero?
I feel like if I put a poll question out there and said, would you rather have Jojo Romero in that game or Ryan Fernandez?
The overwhelming vote is going to be for Jojo.
And Sonson, as far as him, like, getting sent down in DFA,
we've already asked him about him.
Svonson has been asked about, and Ali has said that, no, we're not going to send him down.
We want him competing at the big leagues, not in the minor leagues.
Like, sending him down to get minor leaguers out isn't going to make him better.
And they're keeping them up here.
Again, he had three scoreless outings before Sunday,
and it was two broken bat flares that ended up being his undoing.
he's not going anywhere.
They're going to work through it at the major league level.
And that's something I've actually said this before where I'm like,
why do they always have to send them down to fix these guys?
Aren't you guys like the best?
You're the major league coaches and stuff?
Aren't you guys really good at this?
Like, why can't you fix it?
Why do you got to send them somewhere else?
And in a season like this where, you know,
they're not going to freak out over every loss.
They don't have to send them anywhere.
They can be like, no, we're good.
We'll figure it out.
Let's get you worked into us and figure out what's wrong.
So, look, I know it was a disappointing series.
I do.
Like, I was disappointed, too, because we were so close in all three games.
And you're also coming off two losses to the Marlins,
and especially that last one where it was kind of like the B squad got to play.
And they lost.
And we're like, we're like, well, we're going to give this one away.
And now you've lost four in a row.
And your week was one in five.
But these are the ups and downs of the season,
the turbulence that is going to continue
and be around in a rebuilding season.
So buckle in, get used to it.
These guys aren't going anywhere.
They're not going to spend money to fix the bullpen.
There isn't anyone down at Memphis on that 40-man roster
that will magically cure things.
You know, we're going to see some shuttling.
You know, Matt Pushard is about ready to come back.
Hunter Dobbins was announced that he's coming up.
He's going to start on Thursday in Pittsburgh.
but some of that depth, Richard Fitz, he's gone, he's out.
Pachy Notton, gone, out.
It's Coe-Aroby, Cooper Jerpy, Hurt, Tink Hens has got an ERA over eight in the minors.
I'm just looking at the 40 man here.
That leaves you Chris Roycroft and Bryson Motz.
And Mott's is a starter.
So you're not going to bring them up, stick him in the pen.
That's not going to help his progression and development.
These are the guys.
This is who they chose, and this is what they're going to work with for the rest of the
and some of them just have to be better.
And that's the goal, is to make them better.
NL. Central standings, Reds fall to Detroit, 9 to 3.
Cubs get shut out in L.A. 6-0,
Brewers shut out the Pirates, 5-0.
So your standings have the Reds in first at 18 and 10.
Cubs are in second at 17 and 11.
Pirates in third at 16 and 12,
and then the Brewers and Cardinals tied at the bottom at 14 and 13.
I still believe the NL Central is the only division
that doesn't have anyone under 500.
So kudos to the to the division.
Pirates and Cardinals are going to lock heads now.
So finally get to play a division opponent
when they go to Pittsburgh four games starting on Monday.
Dustin May versus the lefty Mason Montgomery is your probable starters.
Kyle Leahy on Tuesday, Pirates haven't announced to their Tuesday.
Starters going to be yet.
Wednesday, you've got Andre Palante and Bubba Chandler.
And then it's Thursday.
You get to see Hunter Dobbins, Vegas Cardinals Day.
you. Hey, Hunter, come on up. Awesome. Glad you're here. You get to pitch against Paul Skeens.
Thanks, guys. Appreciate it. Pirates are five and five in their last 10, but they're a much improved team.
Their lineup with Brandon Lau, Ryan O'Hern, O'Neill Cruz has had a great start to the season.
Eight Dangers, 24 Reddies. Rookie's sensation, kind of Griffin, starting to heat up. Look out for him.
Brian Reynolds is still there. We know the damage he's done against the Cardinals for
Bernard now. Nick Gonzalez,
hitting 5, or hitting 435 at his last six games.
Just sounds like somebody who's going to be a pain in the butt for the Cardinals in this series.
So they're not as good as Seattle, but they are playing with some confidence and swagger.
So beware.
